The XY model of oil‐paper insulation connects the dielectric properties of oil, paper and oil‐paper system. Its equivalent circuit is the basis of the application of dielectric response technology in the state diagnosis of transformer oil‐paper insulation. To better apply the XY model to the study of the dielectric properties of oil‐paper insulation, the dielectric properties of the coaxial oil‐paper insulation system built in the laboratory, XY model and its equivalent circuits are compared. Then an improved circuit of XY model which can reflect the properties of the oil‐paper insulation more truly is proposed. The results show that there is no difference between the XY model and the coaxial model, and both can well characterize the oil‐paper insulation system. The two equivalent circuits of XY model, "Series to Parallel" circuit and "Parallel to Series" circuit, ignore the current tangential component and the electric field distortion in oil‐paper insulation, respectively, resulting in deviations from the XY model. By introducing a new branch C*XY, the improved circuit can reflect the tangential current and electric field distortion in oil‐paper insulation, which can be completely equivalent to XY model. In addition, there is a characteristic frequency point in the oil‐paper insulation system, where the dielectric loss factor tan δ of oil, paper and oil‐paper system are the same. There is no difference between the XY model and its two equivalent circuits at this point. The transformer is a core device of the power system, and it is generally considered that the aging of insulating paper is important to the transformer. The aging process of insulating paper is the degradation process of cellulose. If it can be detected regularly, the aging of oil–paper insulating systems can be monitored conveniently. 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural is an important chemical substance produced by cellulose decomposition. It has broad prospects because of its many advantages. The oil–paper insulation system was thermally aged at 80, 90, 100, and 110 °C to measure the concentration of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural on insulating paper and in transformer oil. In this paper, the concentration of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural is detected by high‐performance liquid chromatography. The linear correlation coefficient of this method can reach 0.99, and the minimum detected concentration can be reduced to 10 µg/l. Experiments show that the concentration of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural increases with the aging time, and when degree of polymerization (DP) decreased, the concentration of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural increased. The correlation coefficient is greater than 0.92, which shows that there is an experimental relationship between the concentration of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural and DP. The parameters of regression curves are different at different temperatures, but in actual operation, the temperature is low and remains stable. The frequency‐domain dielectric spectroscopy (FDS) of humid insulating paper has been measured at different temperatures. The data show three independent dielectric processes: electrode polarization, hopping conductivity and interfacial polarization. The dielectric properties of humid insulating paper are composed of hopping conductivity and interfacial polarization, and its equivalent dielectric model can be represented by a Havriliak‐Negami (HN) relaxation branch parallel hopping conductivity. At high temperatures and low frequencies, the measured dielectric spectroscopy bends downward, which is caused by the electrode polarization. In this case, the equivalent dielectric model is composed of the body impedance of insulating paper and the electrode polarization in series. According to the equivalent dielectric model, the components of electrode polarization, hopping conductivity, and interface polarization can be separated, thereby eliminating the parasitic effect of electrode polarization on the dielectric properties of insulating paper. Both of hopping conductivity and interface polarization of insulating paper move toward high‐frequency direction with temperature increasing. For humid insulating paper with a moisture content of 5.9%, the activation energies of hopping conductivity and interface polarization are 1.18 and 0.99 eV, respectively. This difference in activation energies results in the inability of the spectrums of insulating paper to overlap with each other at different temperatures. Based on the insulating paper without oil immersion, the results obtained in this article are not affected by oil or oil‐immersion operations. Assessment of the aging of oil‐paper insulation is analyzed in this article, based on an improved fractional Poynting‐Thomson model, which includes dc and hopping conductivity (P‐T model2). Based on samples of oil paper produced in laboratories with different thermal aging times, it has been found that the proposed improved model provides a better fit and a higher index of coincidence concerning the measured values than the traditional P‐T model and the model that only incorporates the effect of dc conductivity (P‐T model1). Nevertheless, comparing the proposed improved P‐T model with the traditional Cole–Cole (C‐C), Davidson–Cole (D‐C), and Havriliak–Negami (H‐N) models, the improved P‐T model2 also demonstrated a superior fit for the measured value and a higher coincidence index than another model. In addition, there was an excellent exponential relationship between the quantities εa, εb and τ of the improved model and the furfural content of the samples. In the production of facial oil blotting papers, a certain number of papers must be counted before packaging. Currently, the papers are counted by hand, and this is hard work. Also, there are risks of adhesion of dust and wrinkles. In order to solve these problems, we propose a vision‐based approach. After the papers, which are arranged by shifting, are captured, the proposed image processing steps detect the boundaries of the papers. By counting the detected boundaries, the number of papers can be counted. Since the parameters for the proposed image processing are optimized by genetic algorithm, prior setting by a user is not necessary. For the experiments, an image dataset was constructed with six types of facial oil blotting papers. Since deep low‐frequency tremors are considered to be associated with large earthquakes that occur adjacently on the same subducting plate interface, it is important to investigate tremors that occurred before the establishment of modern seismograph networks such as the High Sensitivity Seismograph Network (Hi‐net). We propose a deep‐learning solution to detect evidence of tremors in scanned images of paper seismogram records from over 50 years ago. In this study, we fine‐tuned a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on the Residual Network, which was pre‐trained using images of synthetic waveforms from our previous study, using a data set comprised of images generated from real seismic data recorded digitally by Hi‐net to facilitate a supervised analysis. The fine‐tuned CNN was able to predict the presence or absence of tremors in the Hi‐net images with an accuracy of 98.64%. Gradient‐weighted Class Activation Mapping heatmaps created to visualize model predictions indicated that the CNN's ability to detect tremors is not degraded by the presence of teleseisms. Once validated using the Hi‐net images, the CNN was applied to paper seismograms recorded from 1966 to 1977 at the Kumano observatory in southwest Japan, operated by Earthquake Research Institute, The University of Tokyo. The CNN showed potential for detecting tremors in scanned images of paper seismogram records from the past, facilitating downstream tasks such as the creation of new tremor catalogs. However, further training using an augmented data set to control for variables such as inconsistent plotting pen thickness is required to develop a universally applicable model. Plain Language Summary: In 2002, deep low‐frequency tremors, which periodically occur with much smaller amplitudes and longer durations than common earthquakes, were discovered owing to the establishment of dense seismic arrays in Japan. These tremors are considered to be associated with megathrust earthquakes because they occur in deeper regions of plate boundaries compared with common earthquakes. Investigating tremors that occurred before the establishment of dense seismic arrays is important since megathrust earthquakes recur on intervals of 100–200 years, and digital records from modern seismic arrays cover only a fraction of that time. In this study, we developed a convolutional neural network based on the Residual Network (ResNet) that extracts tremors from images of waveforms recorded more than 50 years ago, when seismometers drew waveforms directly on drum‐rolled paper using a pen. The proposed ResNet, which was trained on seismogram images generated from synthetic waveforms and real data recorded digitally by modern seismic arrays, was applied to scanned images of paper seismograms recorded from 1966 to 1977 at an observatory in southwest Japan. A list of tremors was successfully obtained; however, further training using data that accounts for variables such as inconsistent plotting pen thickness is required to develop a universally applicable model. The partial discharge in the converter transformer will cause the carbonization of the insulating paper. The high concentration of free carbon particles generated from the insulating paper during the operation of the converter transformer will cause partial discharge, which will aggravate the insulation performance deterioration. For the bi‐directional interaction of carbon particles and partial discharge, the mechanism of insulating paper carbonization caused by partial discharge and the effect of carbon particles on the dielectric strength of oil paper are studied. In this paper, we construct a simulation system of amorphous cellulose to study the carbonization mechanism of insulating paper from the microscopic level. Furthermore, we build a DC voltage experimental platform to carry out partial discharge damage tests of oil‐paper insulation models and to measure the changes in the breakdown voltage with different carbon particle concentrations and diameters. The results show that partial discharge speeds up the cleavage rate of cellulose, generates low molecular hydrocarbon gas and water molecules, and the carbon atoms rearrange into PAH‐like molecules with aliphatic side chains. The surface of the insulating paper will carbonize, then form free carbon particles after peeling off. Afterward, the carbon particles in insulating oil accumulate in the high electric field area and attach to the insulating paper, which will cause electric field distortion and reduce the dielectric strength of oil‐paper insulation. Aromatic sensitizers and related compounds (SRCs) originating from thermal recording material as impurities in waste paper have been detected in aquatic environments near cities where the paper industry is flourishing. In the present study, the levels of exposure to such SRCs and the stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) in different fish species ( Konosirus punctatus, Takifugu niphobles, and Tribolodon hakonensis) were analyzed. These fish species were collected from the vicinity of waste paper recycling plants in Japan. Eleven SRCs were identified in fish muscle at total concentration levels (ΣSRCs) of 64 to 818 ng/g wet weight (mean 181 ng/L wet wt). The dominant SRCs in the fish samples were 1,1-di(4-methylphenyl)ethane, 1,2-bis(3-methylphenoxy)ethane, and 1,4-dibenzyloxybenzene. Stable isotope ratios showed that, although three species feed on the same trophic level, K. punctatus and T. niphobles live in waters farther offshore than those in which T. hakonensis live. The contributions of various factors to the accumulation were also assessed. The lipid content ( r2 = 0.512, p < 0.001) was found to be the significant factor that influenced accumulation of SRCs in fish. The results also revealed significant positive correlation between the accumulation patterns and SRC components in water ( r2 = 0.512-0.658, all p values <0.05), but they showed negative correlations between the SRCs in fish and log KOW values. This suggests that the aqueous route is the predominant route for the accumulation of SRCs in fish. This is the first study on the accumulation of aromatic sensitizers in aquatic biota. Environ. Aim: To explore the health beliefs of clinical and academic nurses from Japan, Australia and China regarding wearing paper masks to protect themselves and others, and to identify differences in participants' health beliefs regarding masks. Background: The correct use of face masks and consensus among health professionals across the globe is essential for containing pandemics, and nurses need to act according to policy to protect themselves, educate the public and preserve resources for frontline health workers. Paper masks are worn by health professionals and the general public to avoid the transmission of respiratory infections, such as COVID‐19, but there appear to be differences in health beliefs of nurses within and between countries regarding these. Methods: This qualitative descriptive study used content analysis with a framework approach. Findings: There were major differences in nurse participants' beliefs between and within countries, including how nurses use paper masks and their understanding of their efficacy. In addition, there were cultural differences in the way that nurses use masks in their daily lives and nursing practice contexts. Conclusion: Nurses from different working environments, countries and areas of practice hold a variety of health beliefs about mask wearing at the personal and professional level. Implications for nursing policy and health policy: The COVID‐19 pandemic has sparked much discussion about the critical importance of masks for the safety of health professionals, and there has been considerable discussion and disagreement about health policies regarding mask use by the general public. Improper use of masks may have a role in creating mask shortages or transmitting infections. An evidence‐based global policy on mask use for respiratory illnesses for health professionals, including nurses, and the general public needs to be adopted and supported by a wide‐reaching education campaign. In Polistes paper wasps, haploid early males can mate with early emerging females and leave viable offspring. In contrast, diploid early males are eventually sterile because they contribute triploid offspring via diploid sperm. Clarifying the ploidy of early males is important for determining whether early male production is a reproductive strategy for the species. We examined the mating behavior and the ploidy of early males in the Japanese paper wasp, Polistes rothneyi iwatai van der Vecht. Thirteen early males from four colonies were all diploid. Two of the nine early males (22.2%) attempted to mate with females, but only one individual (11.1%) was successful (the female's spermatheca contained spermatozoa). These results suggest that although most early males of P. rothneyi iwatai do not produce offspring, their mating may be linked to the occasional production of triploid females. Aims/Introduction: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing rapidly in Japan, and diabetic neuropathy is a major factor decreasing diabetic patients' quality of life, as well as a risk factor for sudden death. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy and raise awareness about it among patients and their physicians. Materials and Methods: Diabetic outpatients ( N = 5077) at 249 medical institutions within Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, were surveyed by questionnaire and underwent foot examinations. The questionnaire included 10 questions about sensory abnormalities of both feet, muscle cramps and autonomic symptoms. Foot examinations included testing for vibratory perception of the medial malleolus, Achilles tendon reflexes and touch sensation of the bottom of the great toe using tissue paper. Results: Of the 5077 patients surveyed, 70.4% reported symptoms. Overall, 75.4% of the patients underwent vibratory perception testing, of whom 44.9% had abnormal thresholds (≤10 s). On the tissue paper touch test, performed in 94.6% of patients, 11.9% had no touch sensation. Of the 2803 type 2 diabetic patients with known background factors who underwent foot examinations, 49.4% had diabetic neuropathy. There was a high prevalence of diabetic neuropathy (36.1%) in patients with <5-year history. Of the patients with no touch sensation on the tissue paper test, 81.3% had diabetic neuropathy. Conclusions: The present study identified the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy in Kanagawa Prefecture. The tissue paper test is a simple and excellent method of evaluating decreased superficial sensation that can help evaluate the severity of diabetic neuropathy. Insulation aging of oiled paper is a common malfunction of transformers. It is of great value to recognize the insulation aging status of oiled paper and predict the service life of transformers using appropriate methods. In this study, an aging state recognition method based on partial discharge was proposed. Partial discharge signals were collected, the feature values were obtained through analysis of the principle component factor, and the state was identified by using a support vector machine. A Weibull distribution‐based method was proposed for the prediction of service life, and the residual life of transformers was determined using failure rate function. Through analysis, it was found that the fault analysis method had an accuracy rate of 80.55% in the recognition of the aging state, which was higher than that of Hidden Markov Model (HMM). In the case analysis, the accuracy rate of the method in recognizing the aging state of 100 transformers reached 82.06%. The accuracy of the failure rate function was also verified in the prediction of service life. Articulation and occlusion test materials are tools used in daily prosthodontic and restorative procedures that aid the clinicians in the evaluation of adjacent and opposing natural and/or artificial tooth contacts. A precision micrometer (Series 293, Mitutoyo, Japan) with a resolution of 0.001 mm was used to measure the thickness of five articulating papers and six articulation foils. Four of the articulating foils tested presented thicknesses inferior or equal to 21 μm, confirming their adequacy for the evaluation of natural dentitions. Clinicians and researchers should be aware that some labeled and actual papers/foils thicknesses are not in accordance., Clinical Significance: The thickness of articulating papers and foils reported by some manufacturers is not accurate. The advent of electronic medical records brought image filing systems to many hospitals, as well as electronic endoscopic medical records. However, data integration among multiple different vendors has not yet been accomplished. We start the Japan Endoscopic Database ( JED) Project endorsed by Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society ( JGES) from January 2015. The purposes of this project are as follows: (i) developing the world's largest endoscopic database generated from daily use of the reporting system; (ii) capturing the actual performance of endoscopic practice in Japan; and (iii) standardizing the terminology and fundamental items for registry of clinical studies. Moreover, the JED project has the potential to automatically collect data about adverse events, competency and evaluation of residents, and actual numbers of procedures on a nationwide scale, certification for the specialty board system, and so on. This report was written by the Japanese Society of Dysphagia Rehabilitation, the Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Nutrition, the Japanese Association on Sarcopenia and Frailty, and the Society of Swallowing and Dysphagia of Japan to consolidate the currently available evidence on the topics of sarcopenia and dysphagia. Histologically, the swallowing muscles are of different embryological origin from somatic muscles, and receive constant input stimulation from the respiratory center. Although the swallowing muscles are striated, their characteristics are different from those of skeletal muscles. The swallowing muscles are inevitably affected by malnutrition and disuse; accumulating evidence is available regarding the influence of malnutrition on the swallowing muscles. Sarcopenic dysphagia is defined as dysphagia caused by sarcopenia of the whole body and swallowing‐related muscles. When sarcopenia does not exist in the entire body, the term "sarcopenic dysphagia" should not be used. Additionally, sarcopenia due to neuromuscular diseases should be excluded; however, aging and secondary sarcopenia after inactivity, malnutrition and disease (wasting disorder and cachexia) are included in sarcopenic dysphagia. The treatment of dysphagia due to sarcopenia requires both dysphagia rehabilitation, such as resistance training of the swallowing muscles and nutritional intervention. However, the fundamental issue of how dysphagia caused by sarcopenia of the swallowing muscles should be diagnosed remains unresolved. Furthermore, whether dysphagia can be caused by primary sarcopenia should be clarified. The article discusses the proposed way to develop synthetic aggregates (SA) through recycling coal fly ash (CFA) and paper waste (PW) as a granular nitrogen fertilizer for low productive red soil in Okinawa, Japan. This study involves the production of 3 types of ammonium sulfate (AS) with 3 different nitrogen (N) percentages along with the comparison of SA with acidic red soil. It concludes that using SA can improve crop production of acidic red soil due to its properties like low bulk density.

Aim: The disc assay system for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a novel technique using a small amount of whole blood on filter paper. The accuracy of this assay system and its feasibility for use in prostate cancer mass screening were evaluated. Methods: In the first arm of the study, to evaluate the accuracy of the disc assay system, PSA values were determined by both a disc assay system and a standard serum assay system using the same blood samples obtained from 420 outpatients. In the second arm of the study, the feasibility and reliability of the disc assay system were examined in prostate cancer mass screening. A total of 2475 men were screened by the disc assay (disc group) and 3348 men were screened by the standard serum assay (serum group) in the first step of mass screening. In the second step of the screening in the disc group, 101 men underwent PSA tests by a standard serum assay, then the first PSA values determined by the disc assay were compared with the second PSA values determined by the standard serum assay. In the second step of the screening in the serum group, 94 men underwent additional PSA tests by a serum assay, and then the first PSA values were compared with the second PSA values. Two men in each group were excluded from analysis because the true PSA values of the first step were not available (more than 50 ng/mL). Results: The PSA values determined by the disc assay closely correlated with those obtained by the standard assay ( r = 0.987) in 295 outpatients with PSA levels between 1.0 and 20 ng/mL. In the PSA mass screening, the PSA values determined in the first step closely correlated with those in the second step both in the disc group ( r = 0.916) and in the serum group ( r = 0.845). A significant dissociation of the two PSA values was observed in seven of 99 men in the disc group and in three of 92 men in the serum group. However, there was no statistical significance in the incidence of dissociation in the two PSA values between the disc group and the serum group. Conclusions: The disc assay system seems to be a sensitive and accurate assay system. In this letter, a disposable micropower source was developed by integrating a microbial fuel cell (MFC) in filter paper. The paper‐based MFC could harvest electrical energy generated by Escherichia coli during the metabolic process. The air‐dried biofilm anode was activated by water for on‐demand electricity generation. This study aimed to optimize the anodic and cathodic materials for maximization of the MFC performance. The concentration of activated carbon powder in the anode and potassium ferricyanide in the cathode were optimized. This paper examines the practices of natural science researchers and the recognition authors receive in multi-authored papers at Japanese universities. The ' Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publication' by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, which sets global standards for authorship ethics in many natural science fields, notes problems in two areas in particular: with 'gift authors' (people who are indicated as authors, but who do not actually contribute to the work) and with 'ghost authors' (people, often students or researchers in lower positions, who are not properly represented in the paper even though they make essential contributions to it). We also note the recent complaints by junior researchers about these violations, which are claimed to be harassment or bullying using power differences. Our survey of researchers in natural sciences at 15 top Japanese universities shows that, despite the different specialized fields, few researchers actually meet the gold standard of authorship criteria of proper authorship and about half think that their violation might be condoned. The data are analyzed taking into consideration a particular local context. Through the exploratory research above, we speculate that most natural science researchers in Japan may be either confused about or struggle with the situation where the strict global criteria conflict with specific local cultures that often condone gift and ghost authorships. Background: Atypical antipsychotic medications have often been used in the treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued new safety information concerning atypical antipsychotic drugs, indicating that their use may increase the risk of cardiovascular adverse events among elderly adults with BPSD. Based on this information, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare issued a similar warning against the use of atypical antipsychotic drugs licensed in Japan. We then sought to determine whether or not the use of typical antipsychotics should be recommended to replace atypical antipsychotics. In this paper, we discuss the influence of these warnings on the withholding of use of risperidone exemplified in seven case histories. Methods: Seven inpatients who exhibited BPSD received risperidone monotherapy in our hospital. In response to the FDA notice, the atypical antipsychotics used to treat these patients were replaced with typical antipsychotic agents. Results: During the period of risperidone administration, all patients exhibited clinical improvement compared with their baseline results and showed no adverse events. Two of our seven patients developed psychotic exacerbation and exhibited extrapyramidal symptoms coinciding with the replacement of risperidone with conventional antipsychotics. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first clinical report on the influence of the FDA alert on the use of atypical antipsychotics for psychotic symptoms in older patients with dementia in Japan. In two of our seven BPSD cases, there was no benefit from taking conventional antipsychotics. Our results lead to the conclusion that the use of typical antipsychotics should not be recommended to replace atypical antipsychotics. Although close attention should be paid to the FDA alert, clinicians must take into consideration the balance of benefits and risks when evaluating the appropriate use of antipsychotics in older patients with dementia. This study investigated mechanical faults in oil‐immersed power transformers with disc‐type windings. Short‐circuit tests were conducted on eight aged removed transformers. Before the short‐circuit tests, accelerated aging tests were conducted on all the transformers to discuss the life limit of transformers. Six out of eight transformers experienced the internal ground faults. Although the radial electromagnetic force and the tolerance of the insulation paper against it have been mainly focused in discussing the life of the power transformers, the ground faults were triggered by the crush of the pressboard by the axial electromagnetic force. The axial compressive stress applied to the pressboards varies from the transformer to the transformer, depending on the design of the windings. The transformer, whose axial compressive stress was relatively lower, passed the short‐circuit test. However, even for the similar deterioration degree of the pressboard, the transformer, whose axial compressive stress was relatively higher, experienced the ground fault. These results indicate that the axial compressive stress during an external short circuit and deterioration of the pressboard are critical factors that determine the life of transformers with disc‐type windings. © 2021 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. As energy shortages and environmental pollution continue to worsen, household photovoltaics has gradually become an important part of household energy management. However, with the penetration rate of household photovoltaics increasing, the access of the high‐proportion household photovoltaics (HPHP) will seriously endanger the operation of the distribution network. Therefore, it is urgent to stabilize the voltage fluctuations after the HPHP connected to the grid. This paper proposes a high‐proportion household photovoltaic optimal configuration method based on integrated–distributed energy storage system. After analyzing the adverse effects of HPHP connected to the grid, this paper uses modified K‐means clustering algorithm to classify energy storage in an integrated and distributed manner. Then based on the modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO), the integrated and distributed energy storage system is configured to realize the voltage stability of HPHP. The analysis of the example shows that the method proposed in this paper can effectively improve the power quality. At the same time, it can achieve the goal of economic optimization, which can effectively solve the adverse impact of HPHP grid connection. © 2021 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Earthquake swarms are most commonly composed of small‐magnitude earthquakes. However, a recent study by Yoshida, Uchida, et al. (2023, https://doi.org/10.1029/2023GL106023) analyzed a swarm beneath the Noto Peninsula in Japan that, after more than two years of moderate‐magnitude seismicity, triggered the moment magnitude (Mw) 6.2 Suzu mainshock in May 2023. Based on high‐precision earthquake locations and a slip inversion of the mainshock, these authors found that the Mw 6.2 Suzu earthquake occurred on the updip extension of a fault that was active during the swarm, likely driven by increased fluid pressure. After publication of that paper, a much larger and more destructive Mw 7.5 event occurred nearby on 1 January 2024. These events underscore the potential for swarms to be precursors to large, damaging earthquakes. Forecasting the eventual evolution of swarms is currently very challenging but could be aided in the future by new observations and models. A reduced incidence of graft versus host disease (GvHD) has been documented among Japanese allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) patients, as the Japanese are genetically more homogeneous than western populations. To clarify whether this ethnic difference affects the results of allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT), we conducted a nationwide survey to compare clinical outcomes of allogeneic PBSCT (n = 214) and BMT (n = 295) from a human leucocyte antigen- identical-related donor in Japanese patients. The cumulative incidence of grades II-IV acute GvHD was 374% for PBSCT and 320% for BMT. The cumulative incidence of extensive chronic GvHD at 1 year was significantly higher after PBSCT than BMT (42% vs. 27%; P < 001). The organ involvement patterns of GvHD were different between the two groups. By multivariate analyses, the incidence of chronic GvHD was significantly increased in PBSCT, whereas the stem cell source did not affect the incidence of acute GvHD, transplant-related mortality, relapse or survival. We concluded that Japanese PBSCT patients have an increased risk of chronic GvHD compared with BMT patients, but the incidence of acute GvHD was still lower than in western populations. Several multimedia applications have recently been implemented on mobile devices, including digital image compression, video compression, and audio processing. Furthermore, Artificial Intelligence (AI) processing has grown in popularity, necessitating the execution of large amounts of data in mobile devices. Therefore, the processing core in a mobile device requires high performance, programmability, and versatility. Multimedia apps for mobile devices typically comprise repeated arithmetic and table‐lookup coding operations. A Content Addressable Memory‐based massive‐parallel SIMD matriX core (CAMX) is presented to increase the processing speed of both operations on a processing core. The CAMX serves as a CPU core accelerator for mobile devices. The CAMX supports high‐parallel processing and is equipped with two CAM modules for high‐speed repeated arithmetic and table‐lookup coding operations. The CAMX has great performance, programmability, and versatility on mobile devices because it can handle logical, arithmetic, search, and shift operations in parallel. This paper shows that the CAMX can process parallel repeated arithmetic and table‐lookup coding operations; single‐precision floating‐point arithmetic can calculate 1024 entries in 5613 clock cycles in parallel without embedding a dedicated floating‐point arithmetic unit. This clock cycle using two's complement‐reduced floating‐point addition implementation decreases 59% than the implementation of straight‐forward floating‐point addition. The implementation of straight‐forward floating‐point additions is improved as two's complement instruction reduced algorithms. Thus, this paper proposes an instruction reduction architecture by modulating the CAMX to directly access the data in the left and right CAM modules from the preserve register. The CAMX has achieved high performance, programmability, and versatility by not embedding a dedicated processing unit. Moreover, assuming the CAMX processes at an operating frequency of 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 GHz, it can process floating‐point additions above approximately 4500 parallelized data, with better performance than an ARM core using NEON and Vector Floating‐Point (VFP). In addition, related works executed by software instruction, dedicated floating‐point arithmetic unit, or both and the CAMX are compared while assuming the same operation frequency. From this result, the CAMX which has 128‐bit and 1024‐entry CAM modules achieves higher performance than the related works executed by only software instructions and by combining software instructions and a dedicated floating‐point arithmetic unit. © 2023 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. In recent years, the object‐tracking algorithm based on Siamese network has gradually become the mainstream algorithm in the field of object tracking due to its characteristics of balancing speed and accuracy. The majority of Siamese‐based trackers only use the first frame extraction template for subsequent tracking in order to prevent the introduction of noise. However, merely with a single initial template employed, it is difficult to achieve the best performance of the tracker in the face of complex tracking environments such as occlusion, motion blur, and non‐rigid deformation. Therefore, the present paper proposes a new multi‐template fusion module based on graph attention network (G‐M module), which consists of two parts: a graph‐attention‐network‐based feature‐embedding module (G module) and a multi‐template fusion module (M module). It can greatly reduce the background noise introduced by template updating while improving the tracker's ability to adapt to changes in object appearance. In addition, in order to maximize the value of G‐M module, the present paper also puts forward a two‐stage template update threshold judgment mechanism. The Pearson correlation coefficient (PCCs) is introduced and combined with APCE and the maximum response value (F‐max) to filter out reliable templates for updating. In this paper, the proposed method is applied to the SiamFC and SiamFC++ trackers. Extensive experiments on mainstream data sets, such as OTB2015, VOT2016, and GOT‐10 k, show that the proposed method can effectively update the tracking template and improve the tracker performance. © 2022 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. The anode electrode plays a vital role in the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) because it has the function of collecting electrons generated by microorganisms living in the anode chamber. In this letter, activated carbon papers fabricated based on ZnCl2‐activated carbon (ZAC) or steam‐activated carbon (SAC) were used as the anodic materials. Escherichia coli was used as an electrogenic bacterium in a two‐chamber MFC. This study compared the performance of ZAC and SAC in the anode. X concentrations (X = 10, 20, and 40 wt%) of ZAC or SAC in the anodes were investigated. Measurements of IgE levels in the blood of neonates were investigated using filter paper for blood collection in mass screening of congenital metabolic disorders. Time-resolved fluoroimmunometric assay system for the measurement of filter paper blood IgE levels was also studied. In an analysis of the present results, IgE values of at least 0.015U/ml, the measurement limit, were considered as high. High IgE levels in filter paper blood were seen in 28 (7.2%) of the 389 cases. When the relation with serum IgE levels at 18 months of age was investigated in 134 of 389 subjects, high serum IgE levels were also found in about 86.7% of the subjects with high IgE levels in filter paper blood. In addition, when the relation between family history of atopic disease and presence of atopic disease in the first 18 months of age was investigated in 203 of the 389 subjects, about 90% of the subjects with a family history of atopic disease and high IgE levels in filter paper blood developed atopic disease. Since filter paper blood is routinely collected in Japan, IgE levels in this blood should be widely checked for the prediction of onset of atopic disease in infants.

The evaluation of the failure probability is essential in the reliability‐centered and risk‐based maintenance of power transformers. The breakage of the pressboard in disc‐type transformers is one of the critical factors determining the lifetimes of power transformers. In this paper, a hierarchical method for evaluating the probability of pressboard failure, which is the breakage of the pressboard, in power transformers that considers the axial displacement of the winding is introduced. In the method, the diagnosis of the axial displacement is classified into three distinct classes. In class 1, no diagnosis is implemented, and the probability of failure is evaluated with the maximum possible axial displacement. In class 2, the diagnosis determines whether the winding is axially displaced. When the winding is diagnosed to be displaced, the probability of failure is evaluated with the maximum possible axial displacement. In class 3, the axial displacement is diagnosed quantitatively, and the probability of failure is then evaluated using the diagnosis result. Examples of the evaluated probabilities of pressboard failure are introduced, and the extension of the evaluated lifetimes of power transformers via the diagnosis of winding axial displacement is demonstrated. © 2021 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. This paper proposes a three‐layer coordinated optimization strategy based on fuzzy control of renewable energy sources (RESs), vehicle‐to‐grid (V2G) and energy storage. Firstly, the overall structure of this strategy is introduced, which is composed of V2G management system, renewable energy dispatching system and energy storage (ES) real‐time balancing system. Secondly, the control strategy is proposed for different systems, among them, the V2G management system considers shortage of power grid, forecasted maximum output of RESs, and state of charge (SOC) of electric vehicles (EVs) to calculate the charging plan for each EV in next time interval by fuzzy control algorithm; The renewable energy management system gets the expected shortage state of the power grid in the next period according to the charging plan and the current state of the power grid, then combined with the battery state of the energy storage system, the renewable energy guiding power generation in the next period can be calculated by the fuzzy control algorithm; The energy storage real‐time balancing system can charge or discharge according to the real‐time frequency and shortage of power grid to ensure balance between supply and demand of power grid. The article reflects on the issue on plant science in Korea. It reveals that the theory on country's scientific focus was not transparent to the people involved in the research. It presents an analysis with the participation of top ten countries including Northern America, Europe, Japan, and Australia. It succumbs that the countries in Asia are smaller than those mentioned above with respect to research publication other than Japan. It explains that Korea and China have increased the number of papers being published annually which out put is equaled with Brazil.

China has become a recent rising power in global development cooperation in the past few years. This paper examines how the Global North, as represented by Japan, responds to the rising of the Global South, as represented by China, in infrastructure support. This paper positions itself in the context of Global‐North/South and triangular cooperation to compare Japan's Partnership for Quality Infrastructure with China's Belt and Road Initiative from the dimensions of policy rhetoric, finance mechanism, environmental sustainability and rule of law. The transformer is the most essential component in electrical power transmission. Once a transformer is installed, it is generally used for decades. When failure occurs in a transformer, serious problems can arise, and numerous electrical components that depend on the transformer may be affected. Thus, deterioration diagnosis of transformers is important. The furfural content in the insulating oil of a transformer is widely used as an indicator of transformer deterioration, as furfural is generated by decomposition of the insulating paper. Although the degree of transformer deterioration can be estimated by measuring the furfural content, this measurement is time‐consuming. This paper proposes a novel method for estimating the amount of furfural contained in insulating oil within a short time. The method is realized by combining spectroscopic analysis in the visible region with a pattern recognition technique. Multi‐port hybrid DC circuit breakers (MP‐HCBs) are rapidly developing due to their obvious advantages in economy compared to traditional two‐port hybrid circuit breakers (HCBs). However, most of the existing MP‐HCB topologies do not have the current‐limiting capability, and a large number of insulated‐gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) are still needed in their main breakers. In response to the problems, a multi‐port current‐limiting hybrid DC circuit breaker (MP‐CLHCB) based on thyristors is proposed in this paper. MP‐CLHCB uses low‐cost thyristors instead of IGBTs, and suppresses the rise of fault current through current‐limiting branch. In an attempt to prevent the MP‐CLHCB from reclosing in a permanent fault and causing damage to the DC grid again, an adaptive reclosing scheme is also proposed. In this paper, the topology, operation stages, theoretical derivation, and parameter design of the MP‐CLHCB are provided. Our research activities would be better served if they were communicated in a manner that is openly accessible to the public and all researchers. The research we share is often limited to representative data included in research papers—science would be much more efficient if all reproducible research data were shared alongside detailed methods and protocols, in the paradigm called Open Science. On the other hand, one primary function of research journals is to select manuscripts of good quality, verify the authenticity of the data and its impact, and deliver to the appropriate audience for critical evaluation and verification. In the current paradigm, where publication in a subset of journals is intimately linked to research evaluation, a hypercompetitive "market" has emerged where authors compete to access a limited number of top‐tier journals, leading to high rejection rates. Competition among publishers and scientific journals for market dominance resulted in an increase in both the number of journals and the cost of publishing and accessing scientific papers. Here we summarize the current problems and potential solutions from the development of AI technology discussed in the seminar at the 46th Annual Meeting of the Molecular Biology Society of Japan. This paper addresses optimization problems subject to an objective function's evaluation‐number constraint arbitrarily given in advance. These problems are practical for black‐box objective functions which cost much money and/or time per evaluation because money and/or time constraints are typically applicable in real‐world projects. This paper suggests a new solution strategy that can be used to adapt metaheuristics to evaluation‐number constraints arbitrarily given in advance. The proposed strategy updates the setting parameters of a target metaheuristic algorithm for every generation by solving a fixed small‐size optimization problem related to the evaluation‐number constraint. It has the advantage of being insensitive to the effects of dimensionality increases in principle. To improve the pulse width modulation (PWM) harmonic suppression effect of the three‐phase VSI‐fed PMSM system, this paper proposed a novel random switching period (RSP)‐Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) technique for the three‐phase power converter. First, the proposed technique replaces the 10‐bit linear feedback shift register pseudorandom number generator (LFSR‐PRNG) with a Tiny Mersenne Twister (MT)‐PRNG to quickly generate high‐quality pseudorandom number sequences. Then, to reduce the sampling error caused by the current ripple, this paper analyzes the sampling timing under different modulation techniques. Based on the interrupted update mechanism of the Infineon AURIX‐TC264, the variable frequency sampling of the RSP‐SVPWM technique is implemented to ensure the best sampling of the motor phase current. Finally, the simulation and experimental results show that the proposed technique can effectively disperse PWM harmonic energy. Meanwhile, the RSP‐SVPWM technique based on variable sampling frequency effectively improves the phase current quality of the PMSM system. Due to the compact and complex internal structure of 110 kV three‐phase enclosed GIS disconnector, the voltage distribution between the contact breaks of each phase has an influence on the insulation performance of the GIS disconnector, and its internal insulation design is a difficult point to be solved. To solve this problem, this paper firstly establishes a three‐dimensional model of three‐phase enclosed GIS disconnecting switch and conducts a research on the distribution of electric field under a specific working condition, it is found that the outer corner of the static contact, the inner corner of the static arc contact, the inner corner of the outer end of the moving contact and the inner corner of the moving contact are the internal electric field concentration of the three‐phase enclosed GIS disconnector. Then, in order to further reduce the electric field strength and improve the insulation margin and performance, this paper proposes a method based on the combination of Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and Multi‐objective Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (MOGOA) to optimize the structural design of three‐phase enclosed GIS disconnector, and a ELM model is established, which takes the internal fillet radius of stationary arcing contact, the internal fillet radius of moving contact, the internal fillet radius of external end of dynamic and static contact, the radius of the outer corner of the two static side contacts and the opening distance of the grounding contact as the inputs, and takes the maximum electric field strength of the two static side contacts and the moving side contacts as outputs; Finally, the structural parameters are optimized by MOGOA algorithm. Compared to the pre‐optimization period, the electric field strengths of the bus bar static‐side contact, dynamic contact and static side contact of the B‐phase after optimization decreased from 20.2, 9.28 and 17.5 to 11.4, 6.65 and 11.5 kV/mm, respectively. In Japan, structural control is widely recognized as a fundamental technology for exceeding the performance limitations of conventional earthquake/wind‐resistant buildings. Over the last three decades, research and development (R & D) has been implemented in construction, mechanical industries, and universities. Additionally, many types of control strategies have been proposed through theoretical, experimental, and numerical investigations. In comparison with other countries, Japan has successfully and rapidly developed remarkable engineering applications for actual buildings using advanced structural control technologies, because Japanese construction companies promote R & D in cooperation with mechanical industries, structural design offices, and universities. This review paper introduces the recent structural control advances in Japan. The state‐of‐the‐art report is based on papers published by the Architectural Institute of Japan, the Proceedings of the 16th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering, articles published in a structural engineering magazine, the special theme sessions at the 7th World Conference on Structural Control and Monitoring, and other relevant information. The key research directions are the simplification of control laws and mechanical devices, high performance with either little or no energy supply, device magnification, use of structural frames and substructures, new materials, adaptability, and cautious uses serving various purposes. The purpose of this paper is to deeply study the actual contact state of sealed relay contact surface, restore the contact spots of contact pair, and make up for the deficiency of establishing contact model of contact pair only by theoretical simulation. In this paper, the electrical contact high‐speed camera system is selected to record the kinematic parameters during the pull‐in process of the contact, and the deflection angle and deformation amount when the contact is complete are calculated. The surface height of the contact surface is collected through the non‐contact morphology scanner, and the actual contact morphology is corrected and restored. Finally, the actual contact spots are analyzed by reconstructing the contact difference‐plane. The method studied in this paper can provide a reference for the further study of contact analysis. In the actual operation, converter transformer valve side bushings are subjected to high voltages and large current loads with large number of harmonics simultaneously. In our previous papers, using the 3‐D electromagnetic‐fluid‐thermal coupling analysis method, the 3‐D temperature distribution of a converter transformer valve side bushing was researched, and the heating and dissipation characteristics of the bushing were analyzed. However, the electric field distribution of the bushing is affected by the temperature gradient inside the bushing. Related researches about the electro‐thermal coupling field of the bushing are rare and most researches are concentrated on the single factor of voltage or temperature. In this paper, by using the electro‐thermal coupling field simulation method proposed in our previous paper, the effect of the core outline size on the electric field distribution of the bushing under a certain temperature gradient was investigated. In addition, by using the transient electric field simulation method, the electric field distribution of the bushing in one cycle subjected to an actual voltage waveform and the current in temperature rise test simultaneously was analyzed considering the effect of the Joule heating power of the core. The proposed method will be able to provide a computation basis for the structure design and optimization of converter transformer valve side bushings. © 2020 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. This paper presents tools that help researchers implement the processes of data-led studies of upper-atmospheric phenomena. These tools were developed as a part of the activities of the Inter-university Upper atmosphere Global Observation NETwork (IUGONET) of Japan, which is a project to develop infrastructure for upper-atmospheric research data. This paper focuses on the data service named IUGONET Type-A, which was launched in October 2016 and has since evolved. In addition to being a conventional metadata catalogue, it has many other useful functions: an easy cross-searching system, a quick-look data-plotting procedure, an interactive data visualization system named UDAS web, and strong linkage with analysis software. Users can pick up relevant data from a huge number of data sets using either lists categorized by instruments/projects, observed regions and special campaigns or a world map of observatories. Users can quickly find the time, location and nature of phenomena that occurred by comparing the quick-look plots of various data displayed by the browser. UDAS web allows researchers to interactively create stacked plots of various data types that can facilitate the understanding of the relationships among phenomena observed in different regions. Furthermore, it presents a command list for software dedicated to data analysis that can smoothly lead users to perform detailed analyses. IUGONET Type-A provides a one-stop data service that can assist users in searching, examining and comprehending data for advanced analysis. It is also capable of handling old data, including analogue data and written paper documents. The effects of direct payments on rice income variability in Japan are analysed based on a balanced panel dataset of Japanese rice farms for 2012–2016. Firstly, the contribution of income components to rice income variability and the effects of a direct payment reduction are discussed by applying variance decomposition. Secondly, robust regression techniques are used to measure the correlation between direct payments and rice income variability. The originality of this paper is that it disaggregates the effects of payments using a regression analysis of the effects of direct payments on income variability for Japan. This contrasts with the existing literature on this topic, which has largely focused on European Union countries. This paper discusses to what degree the reduction in direct payments increases income variability. The results reveal that direct payments decrease Japanese rice income variability. Indeed, after controlling for various farm characteristics, we find a negative relationship between the amount of direct payments linked to rice production and rice income variability. Finally, the results suggest that reducing direct payments when the rice price is falling would increase rice income variability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
