Impact of the equivalent sound absorption area on the sound insulation The sound insulation, expressed with the characteristic measure R'w, is used in Germany to describe the sound insulation. The metrological determination is carried out according to DIN EN ISO 16283 Part 1, whereby the separating surface is standardised with the equivalent sound absorption area. The equivalent sound absorption area is determined by measuring the reverberation time in the receiving room. DIN EN ISO 16283‐1 requires the use of Sabine's reverberation formula to calculate the equivalent sound absorption area. For rooms with larger equivalent sound absorption areas, the use of Eyring's reverberation formula has generally proven its worth. The influence of the determination of the equivalent sound absorption area by means of the reverberation formula according to Eyring is shown by theoretical consideration as well as by measurement results. Previous macroecological studies have suggested that larger and darker insects are favored in cold environments and that the importance of body size and color for the absorption of solar radiation is not limited to diurnal insects. However, whether these effects hold true for local communities and are consistent across taxonomic groups and sampling years remains unexplored. This study examined the variations in body size and color lightness of the two major families of nocturnal moths, Geometridae and Noctuidae, along an elevational gradient of 700 m in Southern Germany. An assemblage‐based analysis was performed using community‐weighted means and a fourth‐corner analysis to test for variations in color and body size among communities as a function of elevation. This was followed by a species‐level analysis to test whether species occurrence and abundance along an elevation gradient were related to these traits, after controlling for host plant availability. In both 2007 and 2016, noctuid moth assemblages became larger and darker with increasing elevation, whereas geometrids showed an opposite trend in terms of color lightness and no clear trend in body size. In single species models, the abundance of geometrids, but not of noctuids, was driven by habitat availability. In turn, the abundance of dark‐colored noctuids, but not geometrids increased with elevation. While body size and color lightness affect insect physiology and the ability to cope with harsh conditions, divergent trait–environment relationships between both families underline that findings of coarse‐scale studies are not necessarily transferable to finer scales. Local abundance and occurrence of noctuids are shaped by morphological traits, whereas that of geometrids are rather shaped by local habitat availability, which can modify their trait–environment‐relationship. Nilotinib (Tasigna), a highly selective and potent BCRABL tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), is administered orally and has pH-dependent aqueous solubility, with lower dissolution at higher pH. This study evaluated the effect of esomeprazole on the pharmacokinetics of nilotinib in healthy participants. Twenty-two participants (6 women, 16 men, mean age of 44.9 ± 12.9 years) were enrolled to receive nilotinib as a single oral 400-mg dose on days 1 and 13 and esomeprazole as 40 mg once daily on days 8 to 13. Serial blood samples were collected up to 72 hours after nilotinib dosing, and nilotinib serum concentrations were determined by a validated liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry assay. Gastric pH was also monitored in all participants. When coadministered with esomeprazole, nilotinib Cmax was decreased by 27% and AUC0-∞ decreased by 34%. Nilotinib tmax was prolonged from 4.0 to 6.0 hours, but t1/2 was not altered. Mean gastric pH was 1.0 ± 0.5 at baseline and increased to 2.79 ± 2.50, 3.98 ± 2.27, 5.30 ± 1.70, 5.38 ± 1.26, and 5.31 ± 1.42 at predose and 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours after the fifth esomeprazole dose, respectively. These results suggested a modest reduction in the rate and extent of nilotinib absorption by esomeprazole. P65 is a new EXAFS beamline to be built at the PETRA III storage ring at DESY in Hamburg. It will mainly be used for standard EXAFS applications with a relatively large beam and moderate flux density. While the beamline optics will be similar to many other standard EXAFS beamlines, the insertion device at such a large high-energy storage ring with low emittance like PETRA III will need special attention. In 1883, Theodor Wilhelm Engelmann, a German scientist, wrote his essay "color and assimilation" (Ger.: "Farbe und Assimilation") describing the state of the art in photosynthesis research, his recent findings, and further assumptions based upon his presented results. Nearly 140 years later, many of his assumptions were proven correct. By his still well‐known bacteria experiments using aerotactic, heterotrophic bacteria, he identified the chloroplasts as the location in which photosynthesis and oxygen production takes place. Furthermore, by evaluating the effects of different light spectra, he constructed the first action spectra that demonstrated the implication of the "green gap" of chlorophylls. He further posited that accessory photosynthetic pigments existed to extend the absorption range of chlorophyll. Although infrequently cited, his work was foundational for current ecological research of the vertical appearance of algae species within the underwater gradient in light spectrum due to specific harvesting of different light spectra, hence complementary chromatic adaptation of communities. In 2013, a new draft of a complete standard for DIN 4109 "Soundproofing in buildings" was issued in 4 parts - "Requirements", "Method of calculation", "Parts catalogue" and "Testing acoustics in buildings". It includes several increases in the requirements for protection against airborne noise and impact sound by comparison to DIN 4109:1989. The increases are based on the grades from monitored buildings of standard construction periodically noted in recent years. Significant changes are also included in Part 2 "Input data for verifying the requirements by calculation". A detailed computation of all transmission paths is carried out here, taking into account the special vibration reducing indices. For a brick wall, the specific indices for the weighted sound reduction index R'w,R are shown that arise for various formations of the joints. Multiple-compartment disposition of insulin has been demonstrated following intravenous administration; however, because of slow absorption and flip-flop kinetics, meal-time insulin pharmacokinetics have been described by a 1-compartment model. Technosphere insulin (TI) is an inhaled human insulin with rapid absorption and a distinct second compartment in its pharmacokinetics. The aim of this analysis was to develop a pharmacokinetic model for insulin administered via the intravenous, subcutaneous, and inhalation routes. A 2-compartment pharmacokinetic model with 1 (inhaled) or 2 sequential (subcutaneous) first-order absorption processes and first-order elimination was developed using data from 2 studies with a total of 651 concentrations from 16 healthy volunteers. Insulin was administered intravenously (5 U), subcutaneously (10 U), and via inhalation (25, 50, and 100 U). The data were modeled simultaneously with NONMEM VI, using ADVAN6 subroutine with FO. Typical values were clearance, 43.4 L/h; volume of distribution in the central compartment, 5.0 L; intercompartmental clearance, 23.9 L/h; volume of distribution in the peripheral compartment 30.7 L; TI first-order absorption rate constant, 2.35 h−1; and first-order absorption rate constants associated with subcutaneously administered insulin, 0.63 and 1.04 h−1, respectively. Absorption rate after subcutaneous dosing was found to decrease with increasing body mass index. Insulin pharmacokinetics were found to be consistent with 2-compartment disposition, regardless of route of administration, with insulin curve differences attributable to absorption differences. A method to estimate reactive transport parameters as well as geometric conduit parameters from a multitracer test in a karst aquifer is provided. For this purpose, a calibration strategy was developed applying the two-region nonequilibrium model CXTFIT. The ambiguity of the model calibration was reduced by first calibrating the model with respect to conservative tracer breakthrough and later transferring conservative transport parameters to the reactive model calibration. The reactive transport parameters were only allowed to be within a defined sensible range to get reasonable calibration values. This calibration strategy was applied to breakthrough curves obtained from a large-scale multitracer test, which was performed in a karst aquifer of the Swabian Alb, Germany. The multitracer test was conducted by the simultaneous injection of uranine, sulforhodamine G, and tinopal CBS-X. The model succeeds to represent the tracer breakthrough curves (TBCs) of uranine and sulforhodamine G and verifies that tracer-rock interactions preferably occur in the immobile fluid region, although the fraction of this region amounts to only 3.5% of the total water. However, the model failed to account for the long tailing observed in the TBC of tinopal CBS-X. Sensitivity analyses reveal that model results for the conservative tracer transport are most sensitive to average velocity and volume fraction of the mobile fluid region, while dispersion and mass transfer coefficients are least influential. Consequently, reactive tracer calibration allows the determination of sorption sites in the mobile and immobile fluid region at small retardation coefficients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An SO42− adsorption submodel has been implemented in the dynamic soil chemistry model SAFE. The submodel calculates pH-dependent SO42− and H+ adsorption to the soil, as well as the net surface charge development due to uneven adsorption of SO42− and H+, using the empirical equations derived from an electrostatic model (Extended Constant Capacitance Model, ECCM) of SO42− adsorption. The resulting new SAFE model was applied on a roof experiment plot in the Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) H. Karst.] stand at Solling, Germany, where atmospheric S and N deposition was artificially reduced by the roof construction. The model performance was compared with the previous versions that used a pH-independent Freudlich model of SO42− adsorption or assumed no SO42− adsorption. With the ECCM-based SO42− adsorption submodel, SAFE simulated soil solution SO42− concentration and base saturation better, in comparison with measured data, than with the previous SO42− adsorption formulations. The number of constitutional courts and supreme courts with constitutional review rights has strongly increased with the third wave of democratisation across the world as an important element of the new constitutionalism. These courts play an important role in day-to-day politics as they can nullify acts of parliament and thus prevent or reverse a change in the status quo. In macro-concepts of comparative politics, their role is unclear. Either they are integrated as counter-majoritarian institutional features of a political system or they are entirely ignored: some authors do not discuss their potential impact at all, while others dismiss them because they believe their preferences as veto players are entirely absorbed by other actors in the political system. However, we know little about the conditions and variables that determine them as being counter-majoritarian or veto players. This article employs the concept of Tsebelis' veto player theory to analyse the question. It focuses on the spatial configuration of veto players in the legislative process and then adds the court as an additional player to find out if it is absorbed in the pareto-efficient set of the existing players or not. A court which is absorbed by other veto players should not in theory veto new legislation. It is argued in this article that courts are conditional veto players. Their veto is dependent on three variables: the ideological composition of the court; the pattern of government control; and the legislative procedures. To empirically support the analysis, data from the United States, France and Germany from 1974 to 2009 is used. This case selection increases variance with regard to system types and court types. The main finding is that courts are not always absorbed as veto players: during the period of analysis, absorption varies between 11 and 71 per cent in the three systems. Furthermore, the pattern of absorption is specific in each country due to government control, court majority and legislative procedure. Therefore, it can be concluded that they are conditional veto players. The findings have at least two implications. First, constitutional courts and supreme courts with judicial review rights should be systematically included in veto player analysis of political systems and not left aside. Any concept ignoring such courts may lead to invalid results, and any concept that counts such courts merely as an institutional feature may lead to distorted results that over- or under-estimate their impact. Second, the findings also have implications for the study of judicial politics. The main bulk of literature in this area is concerned with auto-limitation, the so-called 'self-restraint' of the government to avoid defeat at the court. This auto-limitation, however, should only occur if a court is not absorbed. Korean reunification could be achieved by a confederation agreement between the South Korean government and the North Korean regime that preserves the existing North Korean elite or by a unilateral absorption of the North in which the North's population and territory would be directly incorporated into the South Korean political system. Which of these is a more plausible path to Korean unity? Two regimes confederate when one regime offers a bargain and the other accepts it; the confederation agreement itself then shapes future bargaining between the regimes. Absorption, in contrast, ends one of the regimes and so precludes future negotiations. The confederation path to reunification is more likely when the regimes can confederate in a way that preserves the balance of bargaining leverage between them, which will be when the weaker regime can claim unique competence at governing its territory and when both regimes can maintain their security via a combination of internal resources and external ties. When these factors are not present, absorption is the more likely path to reunification. We illustrate the theory by the reunification of Yemen via a confederation and the reunification of Germany via absorption and apply its logic to the unresolved case of Korea. Surface solar irradiance varies on scales as small as seconds or metres. This variability is driven mostly by wavelength‐dependent scattering by clouds, and to a lesser extent by aerosols and water vapour. The highly variable nature of solar irradiance is not resolved by most atmospheric models, yet it affects, most notably, the land–atmosphere coupling and the quality of solar energy forecasting. Characterising variability, understanding the mechanisms, and developing models capable of resolving it accurately requires spatially and spectrally resolved observational datasets of solar irradiance at high resolution, which are rare. In 2021, we deployed a network of low‐cost radiometers in the Field Experiment on submesoscale spatio‐temporal variability in Lindenberg (FESSTVaL, Germany) and Land surface Interactions with the Atmosphere over the Iberian Semi‐arid Environment (LIAISE, Spain) field campaigns to gather data on cloud‐driven surface patterns of irradiance, including spectral effects, with the aim of addressing this gap in observations and understanding. We find in case studies of cumulus, altocumulus, and cirrus clouds that these clouds generate large spatiotemporal variability in irradiance, but through different mechanisms and at different spatial scales, ranging from 50 m to 30 km. Spectral irradiance in the visible range varies at similar scales, with significant blue enrichment in cloud shadows, most strongly for cumulus, and red enrichment in irradiance peaks, particularly in the case of semitransparent clouds or near cumulus cloud edges. Under clear‐sky conditions, solar irradiance varies significantly in water‐vapour absorption bands at the minute scale, due to variability in atmospheric moisture in the boundary layer. With this study, we show that observing detailed spatiotemporal irradiance patterns is possible using a relatively small, low‐cost sensor network, and that such network observations can provide insight and validation for the development of models capable of resolving irradiance variability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of food on the oral bioavailability of preladenant, a novel adenosine A2A receptor antagonist. This open-label, randomized, single-dose, 2-way crossover study evaluated the effects of a high-fat, high-calorie meal on the pharmacokinetics of preladenant and its metabolite (SCH434748) following oral administration of a single 25-mg preladenant capsule to 24 healthy subjects. When administered with food, the time of maximum concentration (Tmax) of preladenant was prolonged compared with administration in the fasting state. Whereas Tmax was increased from 0.9 hours to 2.6 hours and maximum concentration (Cmax) was decreased (from 212 ng/mL to 128 ng/mL), the extent of absorption (area under the plasma concentration–time curve from time 0 to time of final quantifiable sample, or AUC[tf]) was unaffected by the meal. Similarly, SCH434748 Tmax was prolonged in the fed state, and Cmax decreased from 43.7 ng/mL to 28.6 ng/mL. The assessment of AUC[tf] and area under the plasma concentration–time curve from time 0 to infinity [AUC[I]] together suggests that the AUC for the metabolite remained unchanged. No serious, significant, or unexpected adverse events occurred. In summary, food delays absorption and reduces peak exposure (Cmax) but does not alter the extent of preladenant exposure (AUC). These small changes are unlikely to be of clinical importance. A single 25-mg dose of preladenant is safe and well tolerated in healthy subjects under both fed and fasting conditions. The inherent complexity of underground mining requires highly selective ore extraction and adaptive mine planning. Repeated geological face mapping and reinterpretation throughout mine life is therefore routine in underground mines. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has successfully been applied to enhance geological mapping in surface mining environments, but remains a largely unexplored opportunity in underground operations due to challenges associated with illumination, wet surfaces and data corrections. In this study, we propose a workflow that paves the way for the operational use of HSI in active underground mines. In a laboratory set‐up, we evaluated different hyperspectral sensors and lighting set‐ups as well as the effect of surface moisture. We then acquired hyperspectral data in an underground mine of the Zinnwald/Cínovec Sn‐W‐Li greisen‐type deposit in Germany. These data were corrected for illumination effects, back‐projected into three dimensions and then used to map mineral abundance and estimate Li content across the mine face. We validated the results with handheld laser‐induced breakdown spectroscopy. Despite remaining challenges, we hope this study will help establish hyperspectral sensors in the extractive industry as a means to increase the volume and efficiency of raw material supply, advance digitalisation, and reduce the environmental footprint and other risks associated with underground mining. During antibiotic treatments, active residuals reaching the colon profoundly affect the bacterial flora resulting in the emergence of resistance. To prevent these effects, we developed an enteric-coated formulated activated-charcoal based product, DAV132, meant to deliver its adsorbent to the ileum and neutralize antibiotic residues in the proximal colon. In a randomized, control, crossover study, the plasma pharmacokinetics of the probe drugs amoxicillin (500 mg) absorbed in the proximal intestine, and sulfapyridine (25 mg) metabolized from sulfasalazine in the cecum and rapidly absorbed, were compared after a single administration in 18 healthy subjects who had received DAV132, uncoated formulated activated charcoal (FAC) or water 16 and 8 hours before, concomitantly with the probe drugs, and 8 hours thereafter. The AUC0-96 h of amoxicillin was reduced by more than 70% when it was taken with FAC, but bioequivalent when it was taken with water or DAV132. By contrast, the AUC0-96 h of sulfapyridine was reduced by more than 90% when administered with either FAC or DAV132 in comparison with water. The results show that DAV132 can selectively adsorb drug compounds in the proximal colon, without interfering with drug absorption in the proximal small intestine, thereby constituting a proof of concept that DAV132 actually functions in humans. We explore the possibility to precipitate and to extract DNA, or RNA using an active water/ethanol Janus droplet. The active Janus droplet is initially formed by a single droplet made of a water/ethanol mixture in an oil/surfactant solution. This active droplet self-propels and absorbs surfactant molecules, by advection, while moving in the oily phase. The surfactant absorption leads to a phase separation of the water/ethanol mixture and the formation of an active Janus droplet. This active Janus droplet is made of a water-rich leading droplet and an ethanol-rich trailing droplet. We employ this phase separation method to precipitate and to extract DNA, RNA, or DNA/RNA mixtures independently, in an automatic manner. This automatic precipitation and extraction of DNA, or RNA, is achieved by tuning their water solubility with the addition of salt and then it is demonstrated by fluorescence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The application of leaching models to predict field-scale heavy metal transport has been successful at several sites. Past studies involved site-specific sorption experiments to quantify the leaching process and to investigate its spatial variability. Uncertainty due to lack of knowledge was frequently ignored. Here we present a leaching model that is based on an extended Freundlich equation to describe sorption. The equation is derived on a nationwide scale and is applicable to arbitrary sites in Germany. Instead of relying on site-specific sorption experiments, it only requires information on the spatial variability of pH, organic carbon (Corg), and clay content. In addition to accounting for spatial variability, the model also considers the major sources of uncertainty influencing a leaching prediction. These sources involve uncertainty in the spatial distribution of pH, Corg, and clay content, as well as uncertainty of the extended Freundlich equation. The modeling strategy is based on a parallel soil column approach, in which a deterministic transport model is combined with a two-dimensional Monte Carlo method. The model's ability to predict downward movement is tested on two sites in Germany a wastewater irrigation area and an area in the vicinity of a metal smelter where cadmium leaching has been modeled previously using extended Freundlich equations derived from local sorption data. Nilotinib, a potent orally bioavailable BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is currently available as a hard gelatin capsule that must be swallowed whole. For patients who may have difficulty swallowing the intact capsule, an alternative mode of administration is desirable. The authors compared the bioavailability of nilotinib from the following administrations in 48 healthy subjects: (1) 400 mg nilotinib given as two 200-mg nilotinib intact capsules; (2) contents of two 200-mg nilotinib capsules, each capsule dispersed in 1 teaspoon of nonfat plain yogurt; and (3) contents of two 200-mg nilotinib capsules, each capsule dispersed in 1 teaspoon of applesauce. Nilotinib absorption was modestly increased following the administration of nilotinib dispersed in yogurt. The geometric mean ratios (90% confidence intervals) for nilotinib Cmax, AUC0-tlast, and AUC0-inf were 1.31 (1.22-1.41), 1.11 (1.05-1.16), and 1.08 (1.02-1.15), respectively. Administration of nilotinib dispersed in applesauce showed equivalent bioavailability compared with administration of nilotinib as intact capsules. The geometric mean ratios (90% confidence intervals) for nilotinib Cmax, AUC0-tlast, and AUC0-inf were 0.95 (0.88-1.02), 0.99 (0.94-1.04), and 0.97 (0.90-1.03), respectively. Each treatment was well tolerated in the study subjects. In this article, the X‐ray fluorescence technique is proposed for the quantitative determination of major elements in ferromanganese nodules and crusts, which is a necessary stage of the oceanic ferromanganese deposits investigation and development. The research was performed using a wavelength‐dispersive spectrometer S4 Pioneer (Bruker AXS, Germany). Certified reference materials of ferromanganese nodules, cobalt‐bearing ferromanganese crusts and pelagic sediments were dried and prepared by two different techniques: the pressing of powder samples on a boric acid substrate and the homogenization by fusion with lithium tetraborate in an electric furnace at 1050°C. For each sample preparation technique, different forms of calibration curves (linear or quadratic) and methods of matrix effect correction (fundamental parameters or empirical intensities coefficients) were examined. The uncertainty of the proposed technique was assessed by analyzing the certified reference material FeMn‐1 and by comparison with the atomic absorption spectrometry, flame photometry and spectrophotometry results. Analysis of both fused beads and pressed pellets provides a quantitative determination of the major elements in the oceanic ferromanganese nodules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The influence of pH on cadmium (Cd) sorption and desorption isotherms was studied in sandy and clayey soils of northern Germany. Seventeen topsoils from four long-term lime amendment experiment plots ranging in pH from 4.1 to 6.9 were collected. Batch adsorption isotherms demonstrated the strong influence of pH on Cd sorption behavior. Cadmium sorption increased with pH, even within a very narrow range of pH values (DeltapH = 0.3). The experimental desorption isotherms, which were determined by widening the soil/solution ratio, differed markedlyfrom the adsorption isotherms. Differences decreased when reaction time for desorption was prolonged. The data for Cd adsorption and desorption were pooled to derive the coefficients of a generalized Freundlich-type expression S = S(CM) including soil pH in 0.01 MCaCl2 and organic C content (oc) (% by mass) (S ~ k* (H+)a, ocb CM). Sorption isotherms were used for simulations to predict vertical displacement of Cd in the field. The simulations using measured field mean concentration profiles S(z) as initial values, showed Cd adsorption isotherms tobe appropriate for describing longer-term desorption equilibria. Scientific tasks aimed at decoding and characterizing complex systems and processes at high pressures set new challenges for modern X-ray diffraction instrumentation in terms of X-ray flux, focal spot size and sample positioning. Presented here are new developments at the Extreme Conditions beamline (P02.2, PETRA III, DESY, Germany) that enable considerable improvements in data collection at very high pressures and small scattering volumes. In particular, the focusing of the X-ray beam to the sub-micrometer level is described, and control of the aberrations of the focusing compound refractive lenses is made possible with the implementation of a correcting phase plate. This device provides a significant enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio by conditioning the beam shape profile at the focal spot. A new sample alignment system with a small sphere of confusion enables single-crystal data collection from grains of micrometer to sub-micrometer dimensions subjected to pressures as high as 200 GPa. The combination of the technical development of the optical path and the sample alignment system contributes to research and gives benefits on various levels, including rapid and accurate diffraction mapping of samples with sub-micrometer resolution at multimegabar pressures. Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the organ doses assessed through a digital phantom‐based and a patient specific‐based dosimetric tool in adult routine thorax computed tomography (CT) examinations with reference to physical dose measurements performed in anthropomorphic phantoms. Methods: Two Monte Carlo based dose calculation tools were used to assess organ doses in routine adult thorax CT examinations. These were a digital phantom‐based dosimetry tool (NCICT, National Cancer Institute, USA) and a patient‐specific individualized dosimetry tool (ImpactMC, CT Imaging GmbH, Germany). Digital phantoms and patients were classified in four groups according to their water equivalent diameter (Dw). Normalized to volume computed tomography dose index (CTDIvol), organ dose was assessed for lungs, esophagus, heart, breast, active bone marrow, and skin. Organ doses were compared to measurements performed using thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs) in two physical anthropomorphic phantoms that simulate the average adult individual as a male (Alderson Research Labs, USA) and as a female (ATOM Phantoms, USA). Results: The average percent difference of NCICT to TLD and ImpactMC to TLD dose measurements across all organs in both sexes was 13% and 6%, respectively. The average ± 1 standard deviation in dose values across all organs with NCICT, ImpactMC, and TLDs was ± 0.06 (mGy/mGy), ± 0.19 (mGy/mGy), and ± 0.13 (mGy/mGy), respectively. Organ doses decreased with increasing Dw in both NCICT and ImpactMC. Conclusion: Organ doses estimated with ImpactMC were in closer agreement to TLDs compared to NCICT. This may be attributed to the inherent property of ImpactMC methodology to generate phantoms that resemble the realistic anatomy of the examined patient as opposed to NCICT methodology that incorporates an anatomical discrepancy between phantoms and patients. Cosmic radiation on Earth responds to heliospheric, geomagnetic, atmospheric, and lithospheric changes. In order to use its signal for soil hydrological monitoring, the signal of thermal and epithermal neutron detectors needs to be corrected for external influencing factors. However, theories about the neutron response to soil water, air pressure, air humidity, and incoming cosmic radiation are still under debate. To challenge these theories, we isolated the neutron response from almost any terrestrial changes by operating a bare and a moderated neutron detector in a buoy on a lake in Germany from July 15 to 02 December 2014. We found that the count rate over water has been better predicted by a theory from Köhli et al. (2021, https://doi.org/10.3389/frwa.2020.544847) compared to the traditional approach from Desilets et al. (2010, https://doi.org/10.1029/2009wr008726). We further found strong linear correlation parameters to air pressure (β = 0.0077 mb−1) and air humidity (α = 0.0054 m3/g) for epithermal neutrons, while thermal neutrons responded with α = 0.0023 m3/g. Both approaches, from Rosolem et al. (2013, https://doi.org/10.1175/jhm‐d‐12‐0120.1) and from Köhli et al. (2021, https://doi.org/10.3389/frwa.2020.544847), were similarly able to remove correlations of epithermal neutrons to air humidity. Correction for incoming radiation proved to be necessary for both thermal and epithermal neutrons, for which we tested different neutron monitor stations and correction methods. Here, the approach from Zreda et al. (2012, https://doi.org/10.5194/hess‐16‐4079‐2012) worked best with the Jungfraujoch monitor in Switzerland, while the approach from McJannet and Desilets (2023, https://doi.org/10.1029/2022wr033889) was able to adequately rescale data from more remote neutron monitors. However, no approach was able to sufficiently remove the signal from a major Forbush decrease event on 13 September, to which thermal and epithermal neutrons showed a comparatively strong response. The buoy detector experiment provided a unique data set for empirical testing of traditional and new theories on Cosmic‐Ray Neutron Sensing. It could serve as a local alternative to reference data from remote neutron monitors. Understanding the behavior of mercury (Hg) in organic‐rich sediments as they undergo thermal maturation is important, for example, because enrichment of Hg in sedimentary deposits has become a widely used proxy for volcanism from Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs). In this study, we evaluate the effects of such processes on sedimentary Hg concentrations by investigating a common stratigraphic interval in three drill cores with different levels of thermal maturity (immature, mature and post‐mature) in Toarcian sediments (Posidonienschiefer Formation) from the Lower Saxony Basin, Germany. We present Hg concentrations, bulk organic geochemistry, and total sulfur data. Mercury concentrations in the mature and post‐mature sediments are increased >2‐fold relative to the immature material, which is greater than any potential differences in original Hg concentrations in the studied successions prior to burial. Organic‐carbon and host‐rock mass loss during thermal maturation may have concentrated Hg in the mature sediments to some extent, provided Hg is considered effectively immobile. The increased Hg, TOC‐normalized Hg, and TS‐normalized Hg are most likely linked to the "closed system" behavior of Hg in sedimentary basins and the relatively low temperatures (70–260°C) during maturation that resulted in limited Hg mobility. More speculatively, a certain degree of redistribution of Hg within the mature sediments is suggested by its enrichment in distinct stratigraphic levels. Regardless of the exact mechanisms at play, the elevated Hg concentrations in mature sediments amplify both Hg/TOC and Hg/TS, implying that thermal effects must be considered when using normalized Hg as a proxy for far‐field volcanic activity. There are reports of a hitherto unknown bovine disease in Germany. The symptoms are, in general, indigestion (constipation alternating with diarrhoea), non-infectious chronic laminitis, engorged veins, oedemas, retracted abdomen, emaciation and apathy. Most cases occur during the peripartal period and often result in unexpected death. In addition, there are findings of delayed growth and wasting in heifers, as well as decreasing milk yield. Clinical and standard laboratory examinations leave the origin undisclosed. Bioassays for Clostridium botulinum, its spores and toxins in animals of affected farms revealed the presence of free botulinum toxin in the contents of the lower sections of the intestine. In two control farms without signs of the disease, the tests remained negative. This seems to support our hypothesis that long-lasting absorption of low quantities of botulinum toxin may interfere with the neurological control of intestinal physiology. The complex spatial and temporal structure of cumulus clouds complicates their representation in weather and climate models. Classic meteorological instrumentation struggles to fully capture these features. Networks of multiple high‐resolution hemispheric cameras are increasingly used to fill this data gap, and provide information on this missing multi‐dimensional spatial information. In this study, a path‐tracing algorithm is used to generate virtual camera images of resolved clouds in large‐eddy simulations (LES). These images are then used as a camera network simulator, allowing reconstructions of three‐dimensional cloud edges from the model output. Because the actual LES cloud field is fully known, the combined path‐tracing and reconstruction method can be statistically analyzed. The method is applied to LES realizations of summertime shallow cumulus at the Jülich Observatory for Cloud Evolution (JOYCE), Germany, which also routinely operates a camera network. We find that the path‐tracing method allows accurate reconstruction of up to 70% of the visible cloud edges. Additional sensitivity tests show that the method is robust for changes in its hyperparameters. The sensitivity to cloud optical thickness is also investigated, finding a cloud boundary placement error of approximately 182 m. This error can be considered typical for cloud boundary reconstruction using real stereo camera imagery. The results provide proof of principle for future use of the method for evaluating LES clouds against camera network imagery, and for further optimizing the configuration of such camera networks. We find that the method satisfactorily reproduces the high‐resolution geometry of clouds, providing proof of principle for this approach and opening a new way of comparing high‐resolution meteorological models with camera measurements. Drawing from team‐level job demands‐resources theory, we hypothesize that team workload demands moderate the positive link between team boundary work (i.e., boundary spanning and boundary buffering) and team effectiveness (i.e., team innovation and team performance), such that boundary work is more beneficial for team effectiveness when teams face higher team workload demands. Furthermore, we predict that this interaction occurs through increased team vigor, where team vigor is defined as an affective emergent state characterized by positive valences and high activation levels experienced by team members. We largely find support for our model across two field studies: a cross‐sectional survey using three independent data sources (89 automotive research and development teams, including 724 team members, 89 team leaders and 18 managers) and a time‐lagged survey using two independent data sources (139 teams working in a Chinese utility company, including 640 team members and 139 team leaders). Two open-label, randomized, multiple-dose clinical studies evaluated the potential for pharmacokinetic interaction between the antiepileptic drugs lacosamide and valproic acid. The influence of lacosamide on valproic acid pharmacokinetics (trial A) and valproic acid on lacosamide pharmacokinetics (trial B) was investigated in 32 healthy male volunteers, 16 in each trial. Volunteers in trial A received valproic acid (300 mg bid) with randomization to either early or late addition of lacosamide (200 mg bid). Those in trial B received lacosamide (200 mg bid) with randomization to either early or late addition of valproic acid (300 mg bid). Area under the concentration-time curve during a 12-hour dosing interval at steady state (AUCτ,ss) and maximum steady-state plasma drug concentration (Cmax,ss) were measured for each drug alone and together and tested for equivalence. The point estimates (90% confidence intervals) for AUCτ,ss and Cmax,ss were 104% (99%-109%) and 101% (97%-107%), respectively, for valproic acid and 100% (98%-103%) and 101% (96%-107%), respectively, for lacosamide, which were within the generally accepted equivalence range of 80% to 125%. No changes in the rate or extent of absorption, terminal half-life, or time to maximum concentration were observed. Background The efficacy of sunscreens depends decisively on the homogeneity of its distribution on the skin surface, which is sensitively reflected by two spectroscopic data - the factor of inhomogeneity and the sum transmission - measured after tape stripping. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of a skin pre-treatment with body lotion on the layout of the formulations. Methods Six healthy volunteers were pre-treated using the body lotion, Nivea Body (Beiersdorf AG, Hamburg, Germany). The sunscreen was an oil/water (o/w) emulsion, Roc SPF 8 (RoC SA, Paris, France). The tape stripped tesa films were measured with a modified UV/ VIS spectrometer Lambda 5 (PerkinElmer, Frankfurt/Main, Germany), the data of which were used to calculate both measurands. Results The obtained results made clear that the original spectroscopic data must be corrected taking into account the changed amounts of horny layer particles removed with the individual tape strips after pre-treatment. As a consequence of the correction, the factors of inhomogeneity as well as the sum transmissions confirm a more homogeneous distribution of the applied sunscreen. Conclusion The findings confirm that the applied method is well suited to obtain information on the distribution of topically applied substances, and furthermore that the influence of the pre-treatment of the skin with the body lotion enhances the homogeneity of distribution and thus the sunscreen efficacy. Overweight and obese people appear to be at greater risk of suboptimal vitamin and mineral status compared with people of a healthy weight. Nutrients most affected include vitamin D, vitamin B, carotenoids, folate, vitamin C and iron. The reasons are unknown but may be caused by poor diets, increased requirements or obesity-related changes to nutrient absorption, excretion or metabolism, or a combination of these. Sequestration of fat-soluble vitamins by adipose tissues is also a major factor. Although dietary assessment in obese populations is hampered by under-reporting, there is evidence that dietary patterns characterised by energy-dense, processed foods are more common in groups with a higher body mass index. Dieting practices, bariatric surgery and the use of anti-obesity drugs may compound the risk of nutrient inadequacy, although sustained weight loss helps to improve vitamin D status. A poor nutrient status could accentuate the risk of chronic diseases already experienced by overweight people on account of their excessive fat mass. There is evidence that the use of dietary supplements can improve nutrient status and have a favourable impact on disease risk markers such as lipid profiles and insulin resistance. Whether currently dieting or not, overweight people may benefit from safeguarding vitamin and mineral adequacy by taking a multi-nutrient supplement alongside an increased intake of nutrient-rich foods. We compared personality across cultures to explore the extent of cultural differences. This study used samples matched on gender and age from Germany and Minnesota to compare traditional scale scores and IRT-based parameters for Tellegen's (1982) Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire scales. Because the samples consisted of twins, we were able to replicate the findings from the subsamples consisting of one member of each pair with the subsamples consisting of their co-twins. When the full scales were considered, Germans were higher in Aggression and Absorption and Minnesotans were higher in Well-being, Control, and Traditionalism, but, except for those in Traditionalism, different item-difficulty parameters explained most of these differences. This study provides novel evidence on trends in job stability in the United Kingdom and Germany, two capitalist economies with distinct sets of institutions and labour market reform trajectories. While we find evidence of an increase in short‐term jobs for men in both countries, we also find important differences in the overall patterns of change in the distribution of job tenure duration. The United Kingdom follows a masked instability pattern with opposite job stability trends for men and women. On the other hand, we find evidence of a polarization of the job tenure distribution among men and women in Germany. These findings are partly consistent with expectations from the dualization literature, emphasizing a growing segmentation of the labour market between insiders and outsiders. More generally, this study highlights the existence of multiple paths towards increased job instability that appear to be rooted in institutional differences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding transport and fate processes in the subsurface is of fundamental importance to identify the leaching potentials of herbicides or other compounds to groundwater resources. HYDRUS‐1D was used to simulate water flow and solute transport in arable land lysimeters. Simulations were compared to observed drainage rates and stable water isotopes (δ18O) in the drainage. Four different model setups were investigated and statistically evaluated for their model performance to identify dominant processes for water flow characterization in the vadose zone under similar cultivation management and climatic conditions. The studied lysimeters contain soil cores dominated by sandy gravel (Ly1) and clayey sandy silt (Ly2), both cropped with maize located in Wielenbach, Germany. First, a single‐porosity setup was chosen. For Ly1, modeling results were satisfactory, but for Ly2, the damping observed in the isotope signature of the drainage could not be fully covered. By considering immobile water with a dual‐porosity setup for Ly2, model performance improved. This could be due to a higher fraction of fine pores in Ly2 available for water storage, leading to mixing processes of isotopically enriched summer precipitation and lighter winter water. Accounting for isotopic evaporation fractionation processes in both model setups did not lead to improved model performance. Consequentially, the difference in soil hydraulic properties between the two lysimeters seems to impact water flow processes. Knowledge of such differences is crucial to prevent contamination and mitigate potential risks to soil and groundwater. The purpose of this paper is to examine the longitudinal dynamics within entrepreneurial ecosystems. We empirically test how entrepreneurial activities affect intrapreneurial activities within entrepreneurial ecosystems, and vice versa, analyzing twenty‐two entrepreneurial ecosystems in Germany from 1993 to 2016. Our analyses reveal that transitions occur among entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs through the different phases of an ecosystem's lifecycle. Our findings provide empirical evidence over time on the evolutionary dynamics of entrepreneurial ecosystems, demonstrating that an increase in entrepreneurial activities leads to a decrease in intrapreneurial activities, and vice versa. Our study offers guidance for policymakers on how to consider fluctuating entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial activities over time and builds the basis for future empirical studies to further advance our understanding of the dynamics of entrepreneurial ecosystems. In a reconnaissance study, we investigated the potential of γ‐ray induced production of 38ArK from 39K for geochronological applications. For this purpose, various age monitors commonly in use for the established 40Ar/39Ar‐method were co‐irradiated for 60 h at 17.6 MeV maximum energy in the ELBE facility, Dresden‐Rossendorf, Germany. Because the available energy was low, total production of 38ArK was depressed, leading to low J38‐values of (2.1–4.1) × 10‐6 and hence resulted in only minor 38Ar excess when compared with atmospheric 38Ar/36Ar ratios. In spite of these restrictions, ages of younger monitors could be reproduced within error, whereas older age reference materials showed discrepancies due to the low production rate. We observed Ca‐derived contributions on 36Ar in analysed CaF2 reference materials, and calculated a limit for Ca‐interference on 38ArCa of (38Ar/36Ar)Ca = 0.07 ± 0.03 (1s). In addition, we investigated a potential recoil redistribution of 38Ar by stepwise heating experiments, but could not quantify this further because of concurring processes. More work at higher photon energies is necessary to resolve other open issues, in particular the potential of utilising 40Ar/37Ar ratios for age determination and the possibility of 42Ar production from 44Ca, which would allow correction for Ca‐interference reactions on other Ar isotopes. Based on joint borrowing and a significant transfer component, NextGenerationEU stands in contrast to Germany's longstanding rejection of a 'debt' and 'transfer union'. This article probes into the determinants of this shift in Germany's European policy approach. Focusing on the conflicts in Germany over the 'deepening' of the Monetary Union through fiscal capacity building between 2015 and 2020, it investigates which actors, interests and strategies instigated this shift. The analysis is based on trade and exchange rate data, a qualitative document analysis of position papers as well as expert interviews with interest group representatives, parliamentarians and civil servants. Theoretically, the study draws on concepts from regulation theory, materialist state theory and neo‐Gramscianism. It argues that even though not a fundamental paradigm shift, Germany's push for NextGenerationEU indicates a strategic re‐orientation of parts of the German power bloc towards European fiscal integration, amplified by recent geopolitical dynamics and crisis tendencies. On‐going changes in cities caused by rapid urbanisation and climate change have increased both the flood probability and the severity of flooding. Consequently, there is a need for all cities to adapt to climate and socio‐economic changes by developing new strategies for flood risk management. The following risk paradigm shifts from traditional to more integrated approaches, since one of the main emerging tasks for city managers is the development of resilient cities. The concept of resilience is becoming more and more important, despite the many challenges that interfere with its implementation. The goal of this research is to create knowledge on how to operationalise flood resilience at the neighbourhood level through neighbourhood design. A research approach was used and a qualitative analysis tool, the DS3 model, was developed in order to study a particular neighbourhood of HafenCity, in Hamburg. Results show that design measures involving transportation infrastructure, land use (open public spaces) and buildings have been the main contributions to the flood resilience of the neighbourhood. Wet meadows in Germany are of high conservational value with a strong decline over the last centuries. Occasionally, new meadows developed, providing us with the opportunity to compare vegetation and habitat properties of wet meadows with currently similar, but different historical management. We categorized the areas as ancient, old or young, according to the point of establishment and grassland continuity in the last two centuries. Several trends derived from other grassland types proved also to be true for wet meadows like a high diversity of vascular plants and Red List species in long‐term managed grasslands. Old grasslands, established one to two centuries ago, exhibited the highest diversity of vascular plants and bryophytes, indicating additional plants arrived by seeding. We investigated species composition using ordination and indicator species. Ancient grasslands were characterized by plants adapted to wet meadows (Molinietalia) such as Rhinanthus serotinus. Young meadows were marked by plants revealing succession like Carex brizoides or a high productivity. A trend, contrary to other grassland types, was that most habitat properties exhibited no temporal pattern except habitat area and few soil attributes. Altogether, a stepwise intensification from ancient to young meadows was detected that reflects the fast development from traditional to modern agriculture. Including the grassland's history in conservation approaches and adapting the management accordingly will improve restoration attempts. Ancient and old grasslands provided more appropriate species for future wet meadows, whereas young grasslands often need a more intensive land use and would benefit from seeding to develop to species‐rich meadows. Participating in further training is strategically important for employees to ensure their employability. Particularly for employees in low‐skilled jobs, works councils — firm‐level organizations that represent employees — constitute an important employee advocacy instrument in European countries, such as France and Germany. With comprehensive co‐determination rights, works councils can influence firms' hiring policies, job design and career paths (e.g. promotions). Using German firm‐level data, we empirically investigate the influence of works councils on firms' training provision for employees in firms below and above the industry level of technology. The results show that works councils have a positive effect on the percentage of employees in general, and of employees in low‐skilled jobs in particular, participating in training, but only for firms below the industry level of technology. These results show the importance of works councils in supporting training in such firms and enhancing the employment prospects of employees in low‐skilled jobs. In contrast, firms above the industry level of technology invest in training with or without a works council, indicating that the training interests of employers and employees are aligned. Summary: Rapid adaptation of weeds to herbicide applications in agriculture through resistance development is a widespread phenomenon. In particular, the grass Alopecurus myosuroides is an extremely problematic weed in cereal crops with the potential to manifest resistance in only a few generations. Target‐site resistances (TSRs), with their strong phenotypic response, play an important role in this rapid adaptive response. Recently, using PacBio's long‐read amplicon sequencing technology in hundreds of individuals, we were able to decipher the genomic context in which TSR mutations occur. However, sequencing individual amplicons are costly and time‐consuming, thus impractical to implement for other resistance loci or applications. Alternatively, pool‐based approaches overcome these limitations and provide reliable allele frequencies, although at the expense of not preserving haplotype information. In this proof‐of‐concept study, we sequenced with PacBio High Fidelity (HiFi) reads long‐range amplicons (13.2 kb), encompassing the entire ACCase gene in pools of over 100 individuals, and resolved them into haplotypes using the clustering algorithm PacBio amplicon analysis (pbaa), a new application for pools in plants and other organisms. From these amplicon pools, we were able to recover most haplotypes from previously sequenced individuals of the same population. In addition, we analysed new pools from a Germany‐wide collection of A. myosuroides populations and found that TSR mutations originating from soft sweeps of independent origin were common. Forward‐in‐time simulations indicate that TSR haplotypes will persist for decades even at relatively low frequencies and without selection, highlighting the importance of accurate measurement of TSR haplotype prevalence for weed management. Psychological reattachment means mentally tuning into one's work before starting work in the morning. In this daily diary study, we investigated whether psychological reattachment may be beneficial not only for work engagement but also for proactivity during the day. We moreover considered two competing theoretical propositions regarding the role of psychological reattachment in the effect of sleep quality on work engagement and proactivity. The first proposition assumes a cognitive, self‐regulatory perspective in which psychological reattachment serves as a moderator, buffering the detrimental effect of poor sleep quality on work engagement and proactivity. The second proposition assumes an energetic process in which psychological reattachment may benefit from a good night's sleep and thus serve as a mediator for the beneficial effect of sleep quality on work engagement and proactivity. We conducted a daily diary study over ten consecutive workdays. Altogether, we collected data from 171 employees on 1186 days. The results indicated that on days with good sleep quality and higher psychological reattachment, work engagement and proactivity were higher. Day‐specific psychological reattachment buffered the negative effects of a poor night's sleep on work engagement, supporting the first of our competing hypotheses. Healthcare workers have been on the frontline of the battle against COVID‐19 disease. However, this has taken a toll on them, resulting in elevated stress and poor mental health. We argue that healthcare workers' stress mindset and resilience could mitigate negative outcomes of COVID‐19‐related stress by helping them view this stressful situation in a more positive light and appraise it as a challenge rather than a threat. Accordingly, we hypothesized that both a stress‐is‐enhancing mindset about COVID‐19‐related stress and resilience would improve healthcare workers' appraisal of their personal resources and increase their challenge appraisals, positively contributing to their mental health. We collected data from 160 healthcare workers and performed structural equation modeling for hypothesis testing. The results indicate that both a stress‐is‐enhancing mindset about COVID‐19‐related stress and psychological resilience are indirectly related to better mental well‐being and lower health‐related anxiety through challenge appraisals. This study contributes to research in mental health by suggesting that protecting and promoting healthcare workers' mental health is possible by empowering them through increasing personal resources such as a positive mindset about stressful situations and resilience. The corrosivity of atmospheres in Europe has changed significantly in recent decades. For the Federal Republic of Germany, no current values for the corrosion rate based on 1‐year atmospheric exposure of standard specimens can be found in the scientific literature after 2000. This paper presents results from a field exposure study in the Berlin metropolitan area and Helgoland in 2016. Based on standard specimens, values for the corrosion rate and the corresponding atmospheric corrosivity category are determined for open exposure and indirect weathering in a ventilated enclosure as sheltering after 1 year of exposure. The results prove that determined corrosivity categories are material‐specific. Sheltered exposure is a typical atmospheric situation for many building components. It allows statements on the effect of the concentration of airborne substances on the corrosivity beyond the normative requirements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In‐stream nitrate (NO3−) uptake in rivers involves complex autotrophic and heterotrophic pathways, which often vary spatiotemporally due to biotic and abiotic drivers. High‐frequency monitoring of NO3− mass balance between upstream and downstream measurement sites can quantitatively disentangle multi‐path NO3− uptake dynamics at the reach scale. However, this approach remains limited to a few river types and has not been fully explored for higher‐order streams with varying hydro‐morphological and biogeochemical conditions. We conducted two‐station 15‐min monitoring in five high‐order stream reaches in central Germany, calculating the NO3−‐N mass balance and whole‐stream metabolism based on time series of NO3−‐N and dissolved oxygen, respectively. With thorough considerations of lateral inputs, the calculated net NO3−‐N uptake rates (UNET ${U}_{\mathrm{N}\mathrm{E}\mathrm{T}}$) differed substantially among campaigns (ranging from −151.1 to 357.6 mg N m2 d−1, with cases of negative values representing net NO3−‐N release), and exhibited higher UNET ${U}_{\mathrm{N}\mathrm{E}\mathrm{T}}$ during the post‐wet season than during the dry season. Subtracting autotrophic assimilation (UA ${U}_{A}$, stoichiometrically coupled to stream metabolism) from UNET ${U}_{\mathrm{N}\mathrm{E}\mathrm{T}}$, UD ${U}_{D}$ represented the net balance of heterotrophic NO3−‐N uptake (UD ${U}_{D}$ > 0, the dominance of denitrification and heterotrophic assimilation) and NO3−‐N release (UD ${U}_{D}$ < 0, the dominance of nitrification/mineralization). This rarely reported uptake pathway contributed substantially to UNET ${U}_{\mathrm{N}\mathrm{E}\mathrm{T}}$ patterns, especially during post‐wet seasons; moreover, it appeared to exhibit various diel patterns, and for UD ${U}_{D}$ > 0, diel minima occurred during the daytime. These findings advance our understanding of complex reach‐scale N‐retention processes and can help develop future modeling concepts at the river‐network scale. In the central Atlas of Tunisia, numerous outcrops of the upper Eocene provide smectitic clays. A representative sample (A) which was collected from the El Gnater region round El Ala underwent mineralogical and physicochemical analyses (granulometry, DRX, BET, FT‐IR, etc.). This clay showing percentage of the order of 80% in smectite were activated with hydrochloric acid to improve its physicochemical properties, and consequently to increase their decolorization power for soybean oils. The best results were obtained using clay, activated with 3 N hydrochloric acid for 3 h at 75°C (AA2). Indeed, the specific surface area increased from 44 to 119 m2/g. The characterization of physicochemical properties was carried out on the samples (A: raw, AA: activated at different acid concentrations 1.5, 3 and 4.5 N at 75°C during 3 h). Under optimal conditions, the decolorization power of AA2 clay (60.15%) was found to be better than that obtained by a bleaching earth imported from Germany (57.27%). Objectives: After pre‐exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) was introduced, rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) increased among PrEP users. However, data on STI trends in people living with HIV since then are limited. Since September 2019, PrEP has been covered by statutory German health insurance (SHI) in vulnerable groups. This study aimed to determine whether this coverage of PrEP costs affected STI rates in people living with HIV (specifically, men who have sex with men). Methods: All patients of the HIVCENTER Frankfurt diagnosed with at least one STI within the observation period were retrospectively enrolled in the study. STIs included infection with Treponema pallidum, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and/or Trichomonas vaginalis. The observation period covered 1 year before and 1 year after the coverage of PrEP costs by German SHI. Data were collected from outpatient clinic records. Results: In total, 143 patients were enrolled in the study. The observation period was September 2018 to August 2019 for group 1 (n = 73) and September 2019 to August 2020 for group 2 (n = 70). The most frequent STIs were syphilis and infections due to chlamydia, gonococci, and trichomonads, in descending order. Infections with T. pallidum occurred more often in group 2 than in group 1 (60.0% vs. 50.7%; p = 0.253) as did chlamydia (37.1% vs. 28.8%; p = 0.286). Conclusions: A tendency for an increased ratio of STIs in people living with HIV was observed after the introduction of PrEP coverage by German SHI. STIs should be discussed intensively with people living with HIV, since the communities of PrEP users and people living with HIV overlap, and changes in risk behaviour might influence both groups.
