Summary: A well‐optimized and well‐performed communication network protocol is necessary to build successful underwater acoustic sensor networks (UWASNs). But for wired and wireless communication, medium access control (MAC) has a great effect on network performance and optimization. But unlike land‐based MAC protocols, underwater MAC protocols come with various challenges and issues like high propagation delay, limited bandwidth for communication signals, large attenuation in network signals, and the high noise level in signals. It is very challenging to build a well‐optimized underwater MAC protocol. Also, in UWASN, sensor nodes are generally divided into sub‐network parts to reduce the propagation delay of data signals. But this creates the problem of non‐uniform traffic load in sensor nodes. So, considering these issues, dynamic hold time MAC (DHT‐MAC) protocol is proposed here. In this protocol, depending on the distance from the central node, sensor nodes are divided into two sub‐network zones (parent node and child node). Depending on the traffic load and propagation delay, the child nodes can change their respective parent nodes dynamically. Advantage of the proposed method is that, if any of the parent nodes stops working, the child node will connect to the nearest parent node. When collecting the data signals, it has been observed that child nodes have a light traffic load compared to parent nodes. So dynamic cooperative transmission MAC (DCT‐MAC) protocol which is a contention‐based MAC protocol has been used in child nodes and as parent nodes have high traffic load, reservation‐based MAC protocol has been used. Recently, opportunistic networks (OppNets) are considered as one of the most attractive developments of mobile ad hoc networks that have emerged, thanks to the development of intelligent devices. Owing to the harsh and dynamic topology of these networks, attaining high delivery ratio is a challenging issue. Hence, it is imperative to select which node's attribute must be adjusted to achieve a higher performance in such unpredictable networks. A mutual information‐based weighting scheme (MIWS) that exploits the entropy concept to assess the impact of the nodes' attributes on the network performance was proposed. The weighting procedure aims to figure out the correlative relations between different attributes and delivery ratio performance of the network. The high weight of certain attributes implies a correspondingly high impact in achieving efficient data forwarding. The proposed scheme is proofed conceptually and simulated using the Opportunistic Network Environment simulator. In contrast to previous studies conducted in the context of weight resolution, the proposed approach allows us to address this issue in real‐time stateless non‐social OppNets. Regardless of the deployed routing protocol, experiments show that adjusting nodes' attributes based on the proposed MIWS can improve the performance up to encouraging delivery ratios. This paper considers a full duplex (FD) cooperative non‐orthogonal multiple access system that employs power splitting relaying (PSR)‐based simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) technique, that is, FD‐PSR‐NOMA system. A single cell network is considered consisting of a base station (BS) and two pre‐paired users, where the near user is configured to act as FD relay to assist the BS for information delivery to the far user. It is assumed that the far user implements maximal ratio combining to combine the direct link signal arriving from the BS and the relayed signal from the near user, to exploit the diversity advantage. Analytical expressions are derived for the outage probabilities of the downlink users, system outage probability, and the throughput of the considered network under imperfect successive interference cancellation (i‐SIC). Analytical expressions are also derived for the outage probabilities and throughput of half duplex (HD) cooperative NOMA system under PSR‐based SWIPT, that is, HD‐PSR‐NOMA system. Further, the asymptotic outage probabilities and diversity orders are derived as well. The optimal power allocation factors at the BS that minimize the system outage probabilities of FD/HD‐PSR‐NOMA networks are determined. Summary: Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have high value in the field of wireless communications. As the earliest WSN clustering protocol, Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) can effectively reduce the energy consumption of data transmission in sensor networks. However, LEACH has some problems such as cluster head nodes are unevenly distributed. In this paper, a unified heuristic bat algorithm (UHBA) is proposed to optimize elections in cluster heads. This algorithm guarantees that the election of cluster heads can freely transform both global search and local search. Meanwhile, comparing with several other variants of the bat algorithm in CEC2013 test suite, it can be seen from results that UHBA has better performance. The rapid urbanisation has transformed cities to the preferential human settlement and allowed cities to quietly witness all range of human activities. As the key enabler in the information and communications technology industry, cellular networks play a decisive role in delivering communication messages and entertainment content. In particular, cellular network operators respond to human initiated service requests by gradually deploying necessary infrastructure and calibrating transmission protocols. Hence, cellular network records encompass the interesting interaction between human-initiated messages and network-triggered responses. In this study, the authors collect the 'big data' in urban cellular networks and try to dig out the human and urban planning properties. Specifically, they focus on the statistical modelling of three representative scenarios like spatial deployment density of base stations, packet length or traffic volume of mobile services, as well as inter-arrival time and dwell time of human mobility. Through extensive data mining, they validate the heavy-tailed feature universally existing in these scenarios. Afterwards, they discuss the implications of this heavy-tailed feature and talk about its fundamental contribution to intelligent resource adjustment, proactive content caching, and enhanced connection management in cellular networks. In vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, achieving reliable physical layer performance is a challenging task due to the highly dynamic nature of V2V propagation channels. Frame timing estimation, as one of the most critical signal processing procedures that rely on channel statistics, has to be appropriately enhanced to tackle this challenge. This study presents a novel frame timing estimation scheme based on both the available periodical preambles in IEEE 802.11p standard. By designing the fourth-order statistics-based correlation and differential normalisation functions, the proposed timing metric not only is capable of possessing an extensible correlation length, but also achieves the robustness to multipath effect and large carrier frequency offset. From the standpoints of hypothesis testing and classification, the proposed approach can effectively increase the distinction between correct and wrong timing indexes in terms of the class-separability criteria, and consequently has a significantly improved timing estimation performance compared with the existing methods. Simulation results consist with theoretical analysis under the typical V2V channel model, and demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly reduce both the probabilities of false alarm and missed detection, and make the selection of a suitable threshold for frame detection much easier. Summary: Opportunistic networks (OppNets) are networks that can be used in situations of sparse network connectivity. Strategies for implementing secure transmission of messages in OppNets offer complex and distinctive problems that are wholly different from traditional networks using TCP/IP protocols for data transmission. In this paper, a security protocol named FuzzyPT is proposed which combats black hole attacks in OppNets. The defense mechanism is based on the information extracted from messages in the buffer, potential threat (PT) messages, and fuzzy logic. Fuzziness aids the system in being adaptive by modeling the character of nodes as either benign or malicious. It provides the network with the ability to judge the character of nodes based on relationships between different parameters instead of basing this decision on fixed conditions. FuzzyPT is observed to reduce erroneous decision‐making and decrease the number of false positives and false negatives in the system. An evolutionary game theoretic model is applied, which analyzes the decision‐making ability of relays in choosing varied strategies while forwarding messages. The evolutionary stable state is computed for the protocol, which verifies the proposition that a majority of the relays will cooperate by forwarding messages. The efficiency of the protocol is judged on various grounds such as delivery probability, network overhead ratio, packets dropped, and transmission latency. It is observed that the proposed game theoretic protocol outperforms an existing acknowledge and evolutionary game theory–based security protocol in terms of all the aforementioned performance characteristics. There has been an escalation in deployment and research of wireless mesh networks by both the business community and academia in the last few years. Their attractive characteristics include low deployment cost, a low-cost option to extend network coverage and ease of maintenance due to their self-healing properties. Multiple routes exist between the sender and receiver nodes because of the mesh layout that ensures network connectivity even when node or link failures occur. Recent advances among others include routing metrics, optimum routing, security, scheduling, cross-layer designs and physical layer techniques. However, there are still challenges in wireless mesh networks as discussed in this paper that need to be addressed. Cross-layer design allows information from adjacent and non-adjacent layers to be used at a particular layer for performance improvement. This paper presents a survey of cross-layer protocol design approaches applied to the IEEE 802.11 standards for wireless multi-hop mesh networks that have been proposed over the last few years for improved performance. We summarize the current research efforts in cross-layer protocol design using the IEEE 802.11 standard in identifying unsolved issues that are a promising avenue to further research. Cooperative diversity is an innovative approach to improve the reliability of communication. Although this technique is considered in the next-generation mobile communication standards, it has its own challenges in practice. For example, in simultaneous transmission-based cooperative protocols, perfect synchronisation of nodes is very hard to realise. The traditional time division multiple access method can simplify the synchronisation problems but leads to long transmission delays. In this paper, a low-delay cooperative strategy is proposed for a network with multiple sources and a single destination, which requires only a simple type of synchronisation. In this technique, we use a combination of superposition coding and network coding; hence the name superposition network coded cooperation. For this strategy, good bounds are obtained for the probability of correct detection for general M-PSK and M-QAM modulation and are compared with simulation results. The results demonstrate improvement in error performance compared with other transmission schemes requiring the same transmission time as superposition network coded cooperation. The increasing energy demands of networks and networked devices represent a threat to the development of the Future Internet. In this respect, recent research projects were devoted to extending next generation networks, architectures and protocols in the green direction. This paper presents a complex demonstration network specifically designed to assess the viability and the real impact of green networking mechanisms on industrial prototypes. The demonstrator reproduces a complete wire-line network chain from the core devices to the subscriber terminals, integrating quite a few green mechanisms able to interoperate efficiently and achieve significant reductions in energy consumption. The experimental results and the ensuing impact analysis show how the aggregation of multiple devices with green capabilities can guarantee a satisfactory performance level, while also allowing huge energy savings. In this study, the authors focus on utilising receiver-based MAC protocol (RB-MAC) and adaptive RB-MAC in routing protocol for low power and lossy wireless sensor networks routing protocol in low-power and lossy wireless channel. This results in a cross-layer approach in which routing decisions can be made based on MAC-layer functionalities. The authors study the effects of multiple receiver nodes, size of preamble and variable duty-cycle in number of retransmissions. Retransmissions increase energy consumptions and delay. Analytical and numerical results confirm that the RB-MAC and adaptive RB-MAC outperform the existing state-of-the art sender-based MAC protocols in terms of end-to-end energy-efficiency, reliability and delay. SUMMARY The medium access control protocol determines system throughput in wireless mobile ad hoc networks following the ieee 802.11 standard. Under this standard, asynchronous data transmissions have a defined distributed coordination function that allows stations to contend for channel usage in a distributed manner via the carrier sensing multiple access with collision avoidance protocol. In distributed coordination function, a slotted binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm resolves collisions of packets transmitted simultaneously by different stations. The BEB algorithm prevents packet collisions during simultaneous access by randomizing moments at stations attempting to access the wireless channels. However, this randomization does not eliminate packet collisions entirely, leading to reduced system throughput and increased packet delay and drop. In addition, the BEB algorithm results in unfair channel access among stations. In this paper, we propose an enhanced binary exponential backoff algorithm to improve channel access fairness by adjusting the manner of increasing or decreasing the contention window based on the number of the successfully sent frames. We propose several configurations and use the NS2 simulator to analyze network performance. The enhanced binary exponential backoff algorithm improves channel access fairness, significantly increases network throughput capacity, and reduces packet delay and drop. SUMMARY When one considers the broad range of wirelessly connected mobile devices used today, it is clear that integrating such network-enabled devices into secure roaming over wireless networks is of essential importance. Over the years, many authentication protocols have been suggested to address this issue. Among these protocols, the recently proposed privacy-preserving universal authentication protocol, Priauth, exceeds the security and efficiency of other authentication techniques. This paper studies the existing roaming authentication protocols and shows that they are not strong enough to provide secure roaming services in three aspects. Further, using Priauth as an example, we propose efficient remedies that fix the weaknesses. The experimental results show that the proposed approaches are feasible in practice. SUMMARY Password-authenticated group key exchange protocols enable communication parties to establish a common secret key (a session key) by only using short secret passwords. Such protocols have been receiving significant attention. This paper shows some security weaknesses in some recently proposed password-authenticated group key exchange protocols. Furthermore, a secure and efficient password-authenticated group key exchange protocol in mobile ad hoc networks is proposed. It only requires constant round to generate a group session key under the dynamic scenario. In other words, the overhead of key generation is independent of the size of a total group. Further, the security properties of our protocol are formally validated by a model checking tool called AVISPA. Security and performance analyses show that, compared with other related group key exchange schemes, the proposed protocol is also efficient for real-world applications in enhancing the security over wireless communications. The ground plane of a handset device plays an important role in the radiation process. As a consequence, through a ground plane modification, it is possible to obtain a multiband performance while keeping small antenna dimensions. Numerical simulation using Method of Moments has been used to understand the effect of the slots and a prototype has been built to validate the solution. The proposal consists in a multiband planar monopole handset antenna featuring a small area of 13 mm × 11 mm with a slotted ground plane operating in multiple communication standards (GSM850, GSM900, DCS, PCS, UMTS, LTE2300, WiMAX, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi). This paper proposes a low-cost, low-power, and highcapacity optical-electrical-optical-type reach extender that can provide 3R frame regeneration and remote management to increase the reach and split ratio with no change to a legacy time division multiple access passive optical network. To provide remote management, the extender gathers information regarding optical transceivers and link status per port and then transmits to a service provider using a simple network management protocol agent. The extender can also apply to an Ethernet passive optical network (E-PON) or a gigabit-capable PON (G-PON) by remote control. In a G-PON, in particular, it can provide burst mode signal retiming and burst-to-continuous mode conversion at the upstream path through a G-PON transmission convergence frame adaptor. Our proposed reach extender is based on the quad-port architecture for cost-effective design and can accommodate both the physical reach of 60 km and the 512 split ratios in a G-PON and the physical reach of 80 km and the 256 split ratios in an E-PON. SUMMARY A new video transport protocol for multicast agents in wireless mesh networks (WMNs) is proposed in this paper. The proposed protocol enables a significant reduction in the transmission overhead, while providing reliable communication for its use in multicast applications. This proposed reliable protocol provides a practical approach for an overlay peer-to-peer multicast facility supported within the application layer. This obviates the need to give upgraded routers capable of handling multicast broadcasting or modify the existing protocol stack. The protocol tolerates partial losses in multimedia transmissions, while supporting control of the delay sensitivity of such transmissions in WMNs. The key issue in this protocol is the ability to detect packet loss, anticipate retransmission requests, and use the anticipated retransmission requests to transmit the lost packets prior to requests from other receiving agents. The proposed protocol allows for the receiver to determine if retransmission of lost packets is required, ensuring the greatest flexibility needed for a reliable multicast protocol. SUMMARY Packet traces are important objects in networking, commonly used in a wide set of applications, including monitoring, troubleshooting, measurements, and validation, to cite a few. Many tools exist to produce and process such traces, but they are often too specific; using them as a basis for creating extended tools is then impractical. Some other tools are generic enough, but exhibit performance issues. This paper reports on our experience designing WiPal, a packet trace manipulation framework with a focus on IEEE 802.11. WiPal is designed for performance and re-usability, while introducing several novel features compared to previous solutions. Besides presenting how WiPal's original design can benefit packet processing programs, we discuss a number of issues a program designer might encounter when writing packet trace processing software. An evaluation of WiPal shows that, albeit generic, it does not impact performance regarding execution speed. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology enables the identification and tracking of objects by means of the wireless signals emitted by a tag attached to the objects of interest. Without adequate protection, however, malicious attackers can easily eavesdrop, scan or forge the information within the tag, thereby threatening the integrity of the system. Previous research has shown that the basic security requirements of RFID systems, i.e. identity authentication, information privacy and location privacy, can be satisfied using conventional cryptographic components. However, such components are expensive, and therefore conflict with the general requirement for low-cost tag designs. Accordingly, this paper presents a low-cost challenge-response security protocol designated as the hidden mutual authentication protocol (HMAP) to accomplish both a mutual authentication capability between the tag and the reader and information privacy. The results show that HMAP provides an efficient means of concealing the authentication messages exchanged between the tag and the reader and is robust toward replay attacks. In addition, it is shown that HMAP is easily extended to provide complete location privacy by utilizing a hash function to generate different tag identifiers in each authentication session. Cities worldwide have planned and implemented large-scale wireless mesh network (WMN) deployments. These mesh deployments are expected to provide broadband mobile access to the Internet at a low cost to the user. This paper considers the fairness problem affecting nodes in multihop WMNs. Many existing approaches to coping with the fairness problem are unsuitable because they necessitate modifications to the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol or node queueing operations. Such modifications require a change in hardware/firmware at every node in the WMN. Thus, these approaches are less favorable from the points of view of interoperability and cost. Without modifying the lower layer protocols, this study identifies TCP parameters that impact throughput fairness and proposes an adjustment to these parameters to reduce frame collisions and to improve throughput fairness. Using simple mathematical formulations and ns2 simulations, this study shows that the frame transmissions from each node can be effectively controlled by properly controlling the delayed ACK timer and by using a suitable advertised window. The proposed method, in addition to fairness, requires fewer buffer resources than other methods. Moreover, it is not sensitive to the carrier sense range. It is also simple and easy to deploy. The nodes in a wireless ad hoc network act as routers in a self-configuring network without infrastructure. An application running on the nodes in the ad hoc network may require that intermediate nodes act as routers, receiving and forwarding data packets to other nodes to overcome the limitations of noise, router congestion and limited transmission power. In existing routing protocols, the 'self-configuring' aspects of network construction have generally been limited to the construction of routes that minimize the number of intermediate nodes on a route while ignoring the effects that the resulting traffic has on the overall communication capacity of the network. This paper presents a context-aware routing metric that factors the effects of environmental noise and router congestion into a single time-based metric, and further presents a new cross-layer routing protocol, called Warp-5 (Wireless Adaptive Routing Protocol, Version 5), that uses the new metric to make better routing decisions in heterogeneous network systems. Simulation results for Warp-5 are presented and compared to the existing, well-known AODV ( Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector) routing protocol and the reinforcement-learning based routing protocol, Q-routing. This paper proposes the streaming radio frequency identification (RFID) protocol to support robust data streaming in a passive communication, which is extended from the ISO18000-6 Type C RFID standard. By observing and modeling the unique bit error behavior through detailed analysis in this paper, we found that performance is significantly limited by inaccurate and unstable link frequencies as well as low SNR which are inevitable for passive devices. Based on the analysis, we propose a simple and efficient protocol to adaptively insert extra error control sequences in a packet for tolerating tough link condition while maximizing the throughput and preserving the minimal implementation cost. To evaluate effectiveness of our proposal in real-time streaming applications, we experimented on real-time H.264 video streaming and prototyped the system on FPGA. To our best knowledge, our paper is the first work to take analytical approach for maximizing the throughput and demonstrate the possibility of the realtime multimedia streaming transmission in the passive RFID system. In information security and network management, attacks based on vulnerabilities have grown in importance. Malicious attackers break into hosts using a variety of techniques. The most common method is to exploit known vulnerabilities. Although patches have long been available for vulnerabilities, system administrators have generally been reluctant to patch their hosts immediately because they perceive the patches to be annoying and complex. To solve these problems, we propose a security vulnerability evaluation and patch framework called PKG-VUL, which evaluates the software installed on hosts to decide whether the hosts are vulnerable and then applies patches to vulnerable hosts. All these operations are accomplished by the widely used simple network management protocol (SNMP). Therefore, system administrators can easily manage their vulnerable hosts through PKG-VUL included in the SNMP-based network management systems as a module. String matching is a fundamental element of an important category of modern packet processing applications which involve scanning the content flowing through a network for thousands of strings at the line rate. To keep pace with high network speeds, specialized hardware-based solutions are needed which should be efficient enough to maintain scalability in terms of speed and the number of strings. In this paper, a novel architecture based upon a recently proposed data structure called the Bloomier filter is proposed which can successfully support scalability. The Bloomier filter is a compact data structure for encoding arbitrary functions, and it supports approximate evaluation queries. By eliminating the Bloomier filter's false positives in a space efficient way, a simple yet powerful exact string matching architecture is proposed that can handle several thousand strings at high rates and is amenable to on-chip realization. The proposed scheme is implemented in reconfigurable hardware and we compare it with existing solutions. The results show that the proposed approach achieves better performance compared to other existing architectures measured in terms of throughput per logic cells per character as a metric. Secure multicast is one of the majority services in the near future. The frameworks for IP multicast cannot be directly applied in wireless networks. To address the natural issues of wireless multicast and enhance the efficiency, an adaptive secure multicast framework based on a new primitive called multi-recipient generalized signcryption and a multi-recipient generalized signcryption scheme based on the gap Diffie–Hellman problem (MGSC-GDH) are proposed. The key technologies to construct a high-performance adaptive scheme including identification function, randomness reusing are investigated. The framework provides separate or joint encryption and signature functions according to users' identities and requirements transparently, and has the ability to aggregate multiple unicast besides the common multicast service. Therefore, overheads are reduced sharply for multiple functions which are provided with a single primitive. By the precise reduction, the gap-bridge between the security of a base scheme and the corresponding multi-recipient generalized signcryption scheme is built, which is a direct measure to quantify the security. Analysis shows that MGSC-GDH is a semantic secure multi-recipient generalized signcryption scheme and more efficient than other similar schemes in computational and communicational aspects. The seamless internetworking among heterogeneous networks is in great demand to provide ‘always-on’ connectivity services with quality of service (QoS) provision, anywhere at anytime. The integration of wireless-fidelity (Wi-Fi) and wireless metropolitan area networks (WiMAX) networks can combine their best features to provide ubiquitous access, while mediating the weakness of both networks. While it is challenging to obtain optimized handover decision-based dynamic QoS information, users can improve their perceived QoS by using the terminal-controlled handover decision in a single device equipped with multiple radio interfaces. The IEEE 802.21 aims at providing a framework that defines media-independent handover (MIH) mechanism that supports seamless handover across heterogeneous networks. In this paper, an multiple attributes decision making-based terminal-controlled vertical handover decision scheme using MIH services is proposed in the integrated Wi-Fi and WiMAX networks to provide ‘always-on’ connectivity QoS services.
