Abstract

The article focuses on fixed Internet protocol networks (IP) and analyzes why their original mechanisms for dealing with congestion needed a radical overhaul to support the real-time, multimedia applications of today. If mobile devices are to become a gateway or portal to be able to access such applications, a consistent method of getting packet A to location B in a regular and timely fashion is entirely necessary. The IP network, as originally conceived, was designed to be a dumb network with intelligent peripherals. Applications were conversations that took place between a server and its clients, and routers simply forwarded packets between one sub-network and another, using their shared knowledge of all destination networks to complete its main task of finding a route from A to B.
