Aim: To explore nursing students' experiences of applying problem‐based learning to train the core competence teamwork and collaboration. Design: The study used a qualitative descriptive design. Method: The data were collected using individual interviews with a purposive sample of 11 students and analysed using inductive qualitative content analysis. Results: The students' experiences of applying problem‐based learning to train the core competence teamwork and collaboration were described in two generic categories: prerequisites to train teamwork and collaboration and abilities practised in the base group. The generic category "prerequisites to train teamwork and collaboration" includes three subcategories: previous experience and education, composition of the base group, and common goals and values in the base group. The generic category "abilities practised in the base group" includes four subcategories: taking personal responsibility, practising role distribution and leadership, developing communication skills and creating togetherness in the base group. The aim was to examine middle school‐aged pupils' participation in an action‐oriented school health promotion project and investigate its effects on their health experience, learning and influence. A survey was sent eight times to middle school‐aged pupils (n = 105). A descriptive analysis with group comparisons was followed by a regression analysis. Health differences were found between gender and age. Aspects of pupil influence and learning about health showed positive progression during the project. Satisfaction with school performance was most associated with health experience. Thus, health experience, gender, and age are factors to consider when planning similar health promotion projects in schools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

People with mental ill health attend general emergency care more often than others for physical and psychiatric care needs. Staff in general emergency care report they lack knowledge and strategies to meet with and care for people with mental ill health. This study aimed to describe how people with mental ill health experience encounters with staff in general emergency care. We conducted individual semi‐structured interviews with 11 people with mental ill health about their experiences in general emergency care and subjected the interview data to qualitative content analysis. Our results show the importance to people with mental ill health of being acknowledged as capable persons, and how this relates to their experiences of being recognized, ignored, or dismissed by staff in general emergency care. Even small, ordinary aspects of staff/patient interactions can have major impacts on a person's recovery and well‐being. Background: For about 40 years, Katie Eriksson developed the caritative caring theory at Åbo Akademi University in Finland. However, a description regarding the most substantial concepts and the relationships between these is lacking and thus needs to be explored. Aims: The aim of the study was twofold: to explore and describe central concepts in the development of caritative caring theory from a postdoctoral perspective and to uncover and explore the relationships between the concepts. Methodology: The design of the study was qualitative with a mixed method approach. The material was collected from a postdoctoral group (n = 38) mainly through electronic questionnaires. The texts were interpreted through manifest and latent content analysis. Findings: The analyses generated five main categories including subcategories. The main categories were 'Caring' 'Ethos', 'Suffering' 'Health' and 'The human being'. The relation between the main concepts compiled as 'A tentative synthesis of the main concepts and the relationships between them'. Conclusion: This study contributes to an understanding of the most fundamental and valuable concepts in the development of caritative theory during its first 40 years according to postdoctoral researchers' perspectives. This study also displays that the concepts ethos and caring have the strongest relationship followed by that between caring and health, indicating the inner core of ethos and love within caring which bears the potential of enhancing the patient's well-being and health. Parents' experiences of family health conversations after having a child in need of neonatal intensive care Background: When a newborn child requires neonatal intensive care, it is often the beginning of a journey of stress and worry for the parents. Such situations could cause difficulties in problem-solving and communication within the family and result in decreased family functioning. Studies have shown that nurse-led interventions in the form of Family Health Conversations promote family's well-being and functioning and strengthen their relationships. However, this model has not previous been used and evaluated with families who have a child in need of neonatal intensive care. Aim: To describe parents' experiences of participating in Family Health Conversations after having a child in need of neonatal intensive care. Method: Family interviews were conducted with 12 families from three neonatal intensive care units in southern Sweden, six months after a Family Health Conversations intervention. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Findings: The parents experienced the Family Health Conversations as an opportunity to co-create a comprehensive picture of what had happened after their child was born. Parents shared their experiences of the Family Health Conversations in terms of feeling validated and strengthened as individuals, as a couple, and as a family. They found the conversations to be supportive to their well-being and to processing experiences and becoming equipped for the future. The parents reported that it was valuable to talk with conversational leaders who had knowledge in neonatal care and who thereby understood what the parents were talking about. This provided a different type of support compared with other conversational contacts. Conclusion: These results highlight the importance of having an early onset of family conversations in order to help the parents to cope with their challenges and improve their well-being. Aim: To describe intensive care nurses' reflections on being part of interdisciplinary emergency teams involved in in‐hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Design: A qualitative descriptive design. Methods: Eighteen intensive care nurses from two regions and three hospitals in Sweden were interviewed. The data were analysed with General Inductive Analysis. Results: The work for intensive care nurses in the emergency team was reflected in three phases: prevention, intervention and mitigation—referred as before, during and after the CPR situation. Conclusions: The findings describe the complexity of being an intensive care nurse in an interdisciplinary emergency team, which entails managing advanced care with limited and unknown resources in a non‐familiar environment. The present findings have important clinical implications concerning the value of having debriefing sessions to reflect on and to talk about obstacles to and prerequisites for performing successful resuscitation. Background: During the pandemic, increased numbers of patients requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission required an increase in ICU capacity, including ICU staffing with competence to care for critically ill patients. Consequently, nurses from acute care areas were called in to staff the ICU along with experienced intensive care nurses. Aims and objectives: To describe Swedish registered nurses' experiences of caring for patients with COVID‐19 in ICUs during the pandemic. Design Mixed method survey design. Methods: An online questionnaire was distributed through social media to registered nurses who had been working in the ICU during the COVID‐19 outbreak. Data were collected for 1 week (May 2020) and analysed using content analysis and descriptive statistics. Results: Of the 282 nurses who participated, the majority were ICU nurses (n = 151; 54%). Half of the nurses specialized in ICU reported that they were responsible for the ICU care of three or more patients during the pandemic (n = 75; 50%). Among non‐intensive care nurses, only 19% received introduction to the COVID‐19 ICU (n = 26). The analysis of data regarding nurses' experiences resulted in three categories: tumbling into chaos, diminished nursing care, and transition into pandemic ICU care. Participants described how patient safety and care quality were compromised, and that nursing care was severely deprioritized during the pandemic. The situation of not being able to provide nursing care resulted in ethical stress. Furthermore, an increased workload and worsened work environment affected nurses' health and well‐being. Conclusions: The findings from the present study indicate that nurses perceived that patient safety and quality of care were compromised during the pandemic. This resulted in ethical stress among nurses, which may have affected their physical and psychosocial well‐being. Management of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) appears to be more challenging than for other dental conditions. This study aimed to explore the decision‐making process in TMD management, and thereby to conceptualize the decision‐making process in dentistry. Individual semi‐structured interviews were conducted during 2018 and 2019 with a purposive sample of 22 general dental practitioners from the Public Dental Healthcare Services and private practices in the Region of Västerbotten, Northern Sweden. The interviews were analysed using the Grounded Theory approach of Charmaz. Data analysis resulted in the core category 'Combining own competence and others' expectations in the desire to do the right thing'. The dentists showed interest in and a desire to apply professional knowledge, but also reflected on challenges and complexity in the decision‐making process for TMD. The challenges were primarily related to organisational factors and lack of self‐confidence. This identifies a need for re‐organisation of daily clinical management in dentistry, and a need for more postgraduate training to improve self‐confidence. Aim: The aim of this study is to develop and psychometrically test the Feeling Safe During Surgery Scale. Design: The study design was non‐experimental and cross‐sectional. Method: The evaluation followed classical test theory, and the instrument was evaluated regarding reliability, construct validity and content validity. For the reliability analysis, a postal questionnaire consisting of the 16 items of the scale was dispatched in March 2020 to a consecutive sample (N = 242) of patients who had undergone hip or knee replacement arthroplasties with regional anaesthesia. Five experts in nursing care evaluated the content validity of the scale. Result: Internal consistency was 0.841. Three items were excluded due to deficits in reliability, resulting in a 13‐item scale. A principal component analysis revealed a two‐dimensional solution, labelled internal and external aspects of feeling safe. Two items were rephrased to improve clarity and content validity. Background: The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in an increased number of interhospital transfers of patients with artificial airways. The transfer of these patients is associated with risks and has been experienced as highly challenging, which needs to be further explored. Aims and objectives: To describe critical care nurses' experiences of caring for critically ill patients with artificial airways during interhospital transfers. Design: A cross‐sectional study using a qualitative approach was conducted during spring 2020. Participants were critical care nurses (n = 7) from different hospitals (n = 2). Methods: The data were collected through semi‐structured interviews based on an interview guide. A qualitative content analysis using an inductive approach was performed. Results: The analysis resulted in one main theme, "Preserving the safety in an unknown environment," and three sub‐themes, "Being adequately prepared is essential to feel secure," "Feeling abandoned and overwhelmingly responsible," and "Being challenged in an unfamiliar and risky environment." Conclusions: Critical care nurses experienced interhospital transfers of critically ill patients with artificial airways as complex and risky. It is essential to have an overall plan in order to prevent any unpredictable and acute events. Adequate communication and good teamwork are key to the safe transfer of a critically ill patient in that potential complications and dangers to the patient can be prevented. Relevance to clinical practice: Standardized checklists need to be created to guide the transfers of critically ill patients with different conditions. Aim: To explore older people's experiences of registered nurses' leadership close to them in community home care. Introduction: In Sweden and throughout the world, the number of people 65 years and older is increasing. While older people are living for more years, living longer can bring more diseases and disabilities, which might lead to the need for home care. Registered nurses are responsible for older people's care needs in their leadership in community home care; this is a part of their professional role as registered nurses, and it implies that they must be multi‐artists. Design: An explorative and inductive design was used in two communities in western Sweden. Methods: Individual interviews were conducted with older people (n = 12) with at least one year of experience with community home care. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The results are presented in the theme 'my registered nurse', including five categories – relationship, professional competence, nursing interventions, coordination and collaboration and organisation – and 15 sub‐categories. Conclusions: These findings are based on older people's own experiences. This is specific, as the phenomenon of the RNs leadership is rarely explored from the perspective of older people. Implications for practice: There is a need for organisations to create more opportunities for older people to have their own registered nurses leading close to them. This is because registered nurses have specific competences for meeting older people's individual needs and involving them as competent partners in satisfying their care needs. Background: Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is an acute and reversible type of heart failure that shares common features with acute coronary syndrome. It is usually caused by psychological or physical stress, but for a third, triggers cannot be identified. Patients also suffer from residual symptoms and decreased mental health in the recovery phase and may struggle to comprehend and manage everyday living. Aim: To describe patients' experiences when afflicted by takotsubo syndrome, after discharge from hospital. Method: An inductive explorative design using a qualitative approach with semi‐structured individual interviews. The text was analysed using qualitative content analysis according to Graneheim and Lundman. Result: Ten women and one man afflicted by TTS were interviewed two to twelve months after discharge. Six sub‐categories were identified, and a main category emerged: The process from symptom onset and understanding to increased awareness and changes in life. The patients suffered from emotional reactions and they sought answers and understanding about the underlying causes. The disease led to changes in patients' daily lives as they were affected physically and psychologically. Spouses and/or bystanders had a positive supporting role, but the patients desired more support from the healthcare professionals such as an earlier appointment for follow‐up with a nurse. Conclusion: Being afflicted by TTS can lead to changes in life conditions but these changes vary among patients. Becoming ill was associated to acute physical stress and prolonged psychological stress and they suffered from emotional reactions. The follow‐up care needs to improve as the patients need more guidance from healthcare professionals and earlier appointment for follow‐up with a nurse. Background: Currently, no available tool easily and effectively measures both the frequency, intensity and distress of symptoms among patients receiving radiotherapy. A core symptom set (fatigue, insomnia, pain, appetite loss, cognitive problems, anxiety, nausea, depression, constipation, diarrhoea and skin reaction) has been identified and assessed across oncology research to better understand the pattern of symptoms and treatment side effects. Aim: The aim was to develop a tool measuring the multiple‐symptom experience in patients undergoing radiotherapy and evaluate its psychometric properties (validity, reliability and responsiveness). Design: This study has a prospective, longitudinal and quantitative design. Methods: We developed a patient‐reported outcome questionnaire, the Radiotherapy‐Related Symptoms Assessment Scale to assess the frequency, intensity and distress associated with symptoms. Patients (n = 175) with brain tumours undergoing proton beam therapy completed the Radiotherapy‐Related Symptoms Assessment Scale and the health‐related quality of life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ‐C30) during treatment. We assessed the validity, reliability and responsiveness of the Radiotherapy‐Related Symptoms Assessment Scale and evaluated the validity against QLQ‐C30. Results: There were significant questionnaire–questionnaire correlations regarding selected items, primarily fatigue, insomnia and pain, indicating satisfactory criterion‐related validity. The Radiotherapy‐Related Symptoms Assessment Scale had fair to good retest reliability. Conclusion: The Radiotherapy‐Related Symptoms Assessment Scale is a valid instrument for assessing symptom intensity and distress in patients with brain tumour undergoing PBT, with psychometric properties within the expected range. The Radiotherapy‐Related Symptoms Assessment Scale provides nurses with substantial information on symptom experience but requires little effort from the patient. The article discusses black liquor gasification which is a process for recovering the energy and chemicals in black liquor produced from the Kraft pulping process. The process, which can be combined with catalytic conversion of synthesis gas (syngas) into motor fuels, holds potential for the production of motor fuel from black liquor. The article focuses on the results obtained by spatially resolved measurements of the composition of gas in the DP-1 gasifier, which is a pressurized black liquor gasifier that contains a water cooled quench probe, in Sweden. Results from several detailed experiments using high-speed photography of black liquor sprays are also discussed in-depth.

Objective: This study was undertaken to identify susceptibility loci for cluster headache and obtain insights into relevant disease pathways.Methods: We carried out a genome-wide association study, where 852 UK and 591 Swedish cluster headache cases were compared with 5,614 and 1,134 controls, respectively. Following quality control and imputation, single variant association testing was conducted using a logistic mixed model for each cohort. The 2 cohorts were subsequently combined in a merged analysis. Downstream analyses, such as gene-set enrichment, functional variant annotation, prediction and pathway analyses, were performed.Results: Initial independent analysis identified 2 replicable cluster headache susceptibility loci on chromosome 2. A merged analysis identified an additional locus on chromosome 1 and confirmed a locus significant in the UK analysis on chromosome 6, which overlaps with a previously known migraine locus. The lead single nucleotide polymorphisms were rs113658130 (p = 1.92 × 10-17 , odds ratio [OR] = 1.51, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.37-1.66) and rs4519530 (p = 6.98 × 10-17 , OR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.34-1.61) on chromosome 2, rs12121134 on chromosome 1 (p = 1.66 × 10-8 , OR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.22-1.52), and rs11153082 (p = 1.85 × 10-8 , OR = 1.30, 95% CI = 1.19-1.42) on chromosome 6. Downstream analyses implicated immunological processes in the pathogenesis of cluster headache.Interpretation: We identified and replicated several genome-wide significant associations supporting a genetic predisposition in cluster headache in a genome-wide association study involving 1,443 cases. Replication in larger independent cohorts combined with comprehensive phenotyping, in relation to, for example, treatment response and cluster headache subtypes, could provide unprecedented insights into genotype-phenotype correlations and the pathophysiological pathways underlying cluster headache. Background: Research claims that 'learning by doing' creates new thinking, often leading to new practice. Objectives: The aim was to explore and describe the staff learning process from the first to the second year when adopting person‐centred care into clinical practice in a nursing home for persons with dementia. Method: The data consisted of poster texts from staff and written notes by researchers obtained from the group discussions. The study involved 24 care units (200 staff). Content analysis was chosen as method to explore the learning process. Result: The staff described the actions that they took during year 1 and year 2, in which five categories emerged, activities, environment, information, priorities and staff routines. With researchers' analysis the categories together created the learning process and formed a sub‐theme. They further formed an overarching theme from simplicity to complexity and consensus. Staff changes year 1 pertained more to planning and doing, while year 2 changes constituted a larger complexity of person‐centred care with reflection, collaborative learning and a mind‐set change. Conclusion: Staff chose the development area, and the learning process was illuminated by the researchers. This underscores the value to visualise and verbalise the steps of change as well as include these steps in the design of an implementation process. The concept of person‐centred care could be viewed on different levels. The findings may contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of staff learning process when implementation of person‐centred care. Implications for practice: Making staff's learning process visible can be a guide for improvement and change from a generic care towards person‐centred care. Objectives: The Swedish Dignity Care Intervention (DCI‐SWE) is an intervention for people with palliative care needs to enhance their dignity. The original DCI was developed in Scotland, where it was tested by nurses in municipal care. In this study, the DCI has been tested for the first time in a Swedish home health care context. The aim was to describe experiences of the DCI‐SWE from the perspectives of community nurses (CNs). Methods: This was a feasibility study with a qualitative design. Three focus group interviews and one individual interview were performed with CNs (n = 11). Reflective diaries and field notes were written by the CNs and researchers, respectively. Data were analysed using inductive content analysis. Results: Two main categories and six subcategories were identified. The first main category, 'Practising the palliative approach while responding to palliative care needs', consisted of the subcategories: gives structure while providing palliative care; gives older people opportunities to be confirmed; and responding to existential and sensitive needs. The second main category, 'Aspects influencing the use of the DCI‐SWE' had two subcategories about facilitators and barriers to the use of the DCI‐SWE, and another about how to establish the DCI‐SWE in the context of home health care. Conclusion: The DCI‐SWE offers CNs an overview of older people's concerns while providing palliative care, and gives the older people opportunities to be listened to. Essential prerequisites for using the DCI‐SWE in municipal home health care are that CNs are comfortable holding conversations and are given time and space for these by the organisation. Other aspects facilitating the use of the DCI‐SWE are managers' engagement and support, continuing training for CNs and CNs' opportunities for reflection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI) is frequently used in the assessment of chronic pain. Three subgroups have been derived from MPI: adaptive coper (AC), dysfunctional (DYS), and interpersonally distressed (ID). The primary aim of this study was to examine whether outcome of Interdisciplinary Multimodal Pain Rehabilitation Programs (IMMRPs) differed across the MPI subgroups. Methods: Patients with chronic pain (N = 34,513), included in the Swedish Quality Registry for Pain Rehabilitation, were classified into MPI subgroups and a subset that participated in IMMRPs (N = 13,419) was used to examine overall treatment outcomes using a previously established Multivariate Improvement Score (MIS) and 2 retrospective patient‐evaluated benefits from treatment. Results: The subgroups differed on sociodemographic characteristics, pain duration, and spatial spreading of pain. DYS and ID had the best overall outcomes to MIS. AC had the best outcomes according to the 2 retrospective items. Transition into other subgroups following IMMRP was common and most prominent in DYS and least prominent in AC. Conclusion: The validity of the MPI subgroups was partially confirmed. DYS and ID had the most severe clinical presentations at baseline and showed most improvement following IMMRP, but overall severity in DYS and ID at post‐treatment was still higher than in the AC group. Future studies should examine how processes captured by MPI interact with neurobiological, medical, sociodemographic, and adaptation/coping factors and how these interactions impact severity of chronic pain and treatment outcome. Non‐urgent and urgent telephone nursing services are increasing globally, and phenomenographic research has shown that how work is understood may influence work performance. This descriptive study makes a qualitative inductive investigation of understandings of emergency medical dispatch center work among registered nurses. Twenty‐four registered nurses at three mid Swedish emergency medical dispatch centers were interviewed. Analysis based on phenomenographic principles identified five categories in the interviews: (i) Assess, prioritize, direct, or refer; (ii) Facilitate ambulance nursing work; (iii) Perform nursing care; (iv) Always be available for the public; and (v) Have the person behind the patient in mind. The first constitutes the basis of the work. The second emphasizes cooperation with and support for the ambulance staff. The third entails remotely providing nursing care, whilst the fourth stresses serving the entire population. The fifth and most comprehensive way of understanding work involves having a holistic view of the person in need, including person‐centered care. Provision of high‐quality emergency medical dispatch center work involves all categories. Aim: Understanding barriers and facilitators for limiting occupational sitting and what impact it has on health on those with type 2 diabetes is essential for future trials and intervention development in primary healthcare settings. This study aimed to explore the feasibility and acceptability of an intervention using mobile health (mHealth) technology, together with counselling by a diabetes specialist nurse, to reduce occupational sitting in adults with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Individual semi‐structured interviews were conducted in 15 participants with type 2 diabetes who completed a 3‐month intervention including mHealth; activity tracker (Garmin Vivofit3) and SMS reminders, one initial face‐to‐face patient‐centred counselling session and three telephone follow‐up calls by a diabetes specialist nurse within the primary healthcare system in Sweden. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Two themes were identified: (1) 'From baby steps to milestones' reflecting three categories; 'Small changes make it easier to reduce sitting', 'Encouraged by trustworthy coaching', 'Physical and mental rewards matter' and (2) 'Tailoring strategies that fit me and my workplace' reflecting four categories; 'It's up to me', 'Taking advantage of the support', 'Using creativity to find practical solutions for interrupting sitting' and 'Living up to expectations'. Conclusion: The intervention was perceived as feasible and acceptable in different office workplaces, and led to increased awareness of sedentary behaviour in adults with type 2 diabetes. Stepwise goal setting together with personalization of the mHealth intervention should be emphasized in individual type 2 diabetes programmes aiming to reduce workplace sitting. Background: Mental health problems are one of the most pressing public health concerns of our time. Sweden has seen a sharp increase in mental disorders among children and youth during the last decade. The evidence base for treatment of psychiatric conditions has developed strongly. Clinical practice guidelines aim to compile such evidence and support healthcare professionals in evidence‐based clinical decision‐making. In Sweden, the national guidelines for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders in children and adolescents were launched in 2010. The aim of this study was two folded, (i) to explore to what extent these guidelines were known and adhered to by health professionals in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and (ii) to investigate factors influencing implementation of the guidelines informed by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. Methods: A qualitative approach was used, and data were collected through interviews with 18 health professionals in Child Mental Health Services in Sweden and a combination of conventional and directed content analyses was used. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research guided and structured data collection and analysis. Results: The guidelines were largely unknown by health professionals in Child Mental Health Services in all the clinics investigated. Adherence to guideline recommendations was reported as very low. Barriers to implementation were found in relation to the characteristics of the intervention, outer setting, inner setting and characteristics of the individuals involved. Conclusions: The government initiative to develop and disseminate the guidelines seems to have made very little impact on health professionals' clinical practice. The guidelines were poorly aligned with the health professionals' knowledge and beliefs about effective mental health services for children and youth with depression and anxiety disorders. There is an increased interest in exploring the use of sensory rooms in psychiatric inpatient care. Sensory rooms can provide stimulation via sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste in a demand-free environment that is controlled by the patient. The rooms may reduce patients' distress and agitation, as well as rates of seclusion and restraint. Successful implementation of sensory rooms is influenced by the attitudes and approach of staff. This paper presents a study of the experiences of 126 staff members who worked with sensory rooms in a Swedish inpatient psychiatry setting. A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was used. Data were collected by a web based self-report 12-item questionnaire that included both open- and closed-ended questions. Our findings strengthen the results of previous research in this area in many ways. Content analyses revealed three main categories: hopes and concerns, focusing on patients' self-care, and the room as a sanctuary. Although staff initially described both negative and positive expectations of sensory rooms, after working with the rooms, there was a strong emphasis on more positive experiences, such as letting go of control and observing an increase in patients' self-confidence, emotional self-care and well-being. Our findings support the important principals of person-centred nursing and recovery-oriented mental health and the ability of staff to implement these principles by working with sensory rooms. Introduction: In Sweden, the law treats female genital cutting (FGC) differently from male genital cutting (MGC). However, the comparability of the medical, ethical, and legal aspects of genital cutting of girls and boys are increasingly discussed by scholars, although little is known about how practicing communities view these aspects. This study aimed to explore attitudes towards comparison of genital cutting of girls and boys among Swedish Somalis, and to investigate factors associated with considering the two practices to be comparable.Material and Methods: In a cross-sectional questionnaire with 648 Swedish Somali men and women from four Swedish cities, descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used for the analysis.Results: Among the Swedish Somalis, 10% considered FGC and MGC to be comparable practices. A majority (98%) of the participants thought FGC could cause long-term health complications, but only 1% considered the physical health disadvantage of MGC would outweigh the physical health benefits. FGC was perceived to be a violation of children's rights by 60%, whereas this proportion for MGC was 3%. Individuals who had a dominant bridging social capital and those who expressed that performing FGC follows religion were more likely to think that FGC and MGC were comparable practices.Conclusions: The increased global attention and emphasis on the comparability of genital cutting of boys and girls was not reflected in this study among Swedish Somalis. Rather, attitudes reflected the common description of the two practices in global public health campaigns, portraying FGC as a harmful practice violating children's rights, while describing MGC as a public health measure. A lack of meaningful activities for people with mental ill health admitted to psychiatric inpatient care has been related to feelings of boredom and 'doing nothing' and is not in line with recovery‐oriented care. Staff in psychiatric inpatient care report having limited time, ambiguous responsibilities, and insufficient support that counteracts their ideals of good nursing care and puts them at risk for high levels of stress and stress of conscience. Research highlights a need for interactions between patients and staff, but few nursing interventions with such a focus are described in the literature. This qualitative study aimed to illuminate staff experiences of introducing and participating in the nursing intervention Time Together, via qualitative content analysis of 17 individual semi‐structured interviews with nursing staff in psychiatric inpatient care. The results show that these staff members experienced Time Together as an arena for mental health nursing. They prepared for the introduction of the intervention by laying a framework for success. Although the actual implementation led to them feeling burdened, they found that Time Together fostered relationships between patients and staff. For successful implementation, mental health nurses need to advocate the intervention. As Time Together constitutes an arena for mental health nursing, play and conversations based on reciprocity and equality can contribute to patients' recovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Interventions during pregnancy and early childhood have been shown to impact dental health. Thus, Antenatal Care and Dental Care collaborated in an intervention called Health Counselling in Dental Care (HCDC). HCDC was offered free of charge to first‐time expectant parents and was aimed at reducing the frequency of dental caries in children and their parents. However, the intervention reached less than 50% of the parents. The aim of this study was to explore facilitators of, barriers to, and suggestions for increased participation in HCDC. Methods: Data were collected through semi‐structured, face‐to‐face interviews with expectant parents. Participants were purposively sampled based on having been invited to HCDC and to achieve a variation in socio‐demographics. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using conventional qualitative content analysis. Results: In total, 16 interviews were conducted (10 women, 6 men). Six categories representing three facilitators and three barriers for participation emerged. The facilitators were the midwife's crucial role for disseminating information about HCDC and motivating participation, that the parents perceived HCDC as valuable for themselves and their offspring, and a desire for new or more knowledge. The barriers included a shortage of information regarding the counselling, a perceived lack of value for the parents and offspring, and the timing of the counselling during pregnancy. Conclusions: The midwives were crucial in providing information and motivation for HCDC participation. To increase attendance, sufficient information regarding the benefits of counselling is required, and the timing needs to be flexible and family‐centred. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drawing on stress and justice literature, we argue that perceptions of job insecurity induce feelings of low procedural justice, which has immediate and prolonged negative effects on health (depressive symptoms, sleep difficulties). Moreover, we explore whether the strength of the job insecurity–justice relationship differs between individuals as a function of their average level of job insecurity over time. Finally, we explore whether the procedural justice–health relationship differs between individuals as a function of variability in justice perceptions over time. We analyzed Swedish panel data from permanent workers over four consecutive waves (with a two‐year time lag between waves) using multilevel analysis, separating within‐ and between‐person variance. Results showed that job insecurity associated negatively with procedural justice at the same time point for all waves. Prolonged effects were less stable. We found immediate (but not prolonged) indirect effects of job insecurity on health outcomes via procedural justice. Average levels in job insecurity over time moderated the within‐person job insecurity–justice relationship. However, variability in procedural justice over time did not moderate the within‐person justice–health relationship. In conclusion, disentangling within‐ and between‐person variability of job insecurity and justice perceptions contributes to the understanding of health effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) use is reported to have increased in several countries over time. In this multi-country population-based questionnaire study, we aimed to describe the patterns of ECP use and identify factors associated with its use.Material and Methods: In 2011-2012, women aged 18-45 years were randomly selected from national registers in Denmark, Norway and Sweden and invited to respond to questions related to lifestyle and contraceptive use. We used generalized logistic models to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) comparing women who had used ECP with women who had never used ECP.Results: Of the 45 445 women, 33.9% (Denmark = 32.3%, Norway = 35.1%, Sweden = 34.6%) had used ECP at least once in their lifetime. Among ECP users, 15.8% had used ECP within the last year and 50.0% had used ECP more than once in their life. After adjusting for country, age at response and response type, ECP use was associated with higher education (OR 2.09, 95% CI 1.54-2.84) and being single, divorced or widowed (OR 3.17, 95% CI 2.87-3.49). Binge drinking and smoking increased the odds of ECP use. Furthermore, early age at first intercourse (OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.08-1.55), having a new partner in the last 6 months (≥3 partners: OR 6.44, 95% CI 5.46-7.60) and lack of condom use with a recent new partner (OR 1.42, 95% CI 1.22-1.66) were found to be associated with ECP use.Conclusions: Our study shows that ECP use is common among Scandinavian women. Higher education and being single were associated with increased odds of ECP use. Risk behaviors such as smoking and early age at first sex were also associated with increased odds of ECP use. Since ECP use is not protective against sexually transmitted infections, our findings highlight the need to encourage awareness and regular use of condoms to prevent sexually transmitted diseases in women. Background: Timely identification of patients with palliative care needs is a prerequisite for being able to carry out effective and equal palliative care. The Supportive and Palliative Care Indicators Tool (SPICT) identifies patients likely to benefit from a palliative approach. Aim: The main objective was to describe the translation, cross‐cultural adaptation and content validation process of the SPICT‐SE. In this process, the prefinal SPICT‐SE was tested in focus group interviews to explore how the tool was perceived and interpreted by healthcare professionals in a Swedish healthcare context. Methods: In this qualitative descriptive study, the translation, cross‐cultural adaptation and content validation process of the SPICT‐SE was based on a recommended method for cross‐cultural adaptation of self‐report measures. The process included two independent forward translations, a synthesis, and one independent back‐translation. An expert committee consolidated all the versions and developed the prefinal version of the SPICT‐SE. The prefinal version of the SPICT‐SE was tested in four focus group interviews with physicians and nurses engaged in inpatient or outpatient care in south‐west Sweden. A thematic analysis of the transcribed interviews was performed. The SPICT‐SE was then revised to the final version. Results: In the thematic analysis, four themes were constructed that together described how the SPICT‐SE was perceived and interpreted by healthcare professionals: The mindset is familiar and relevant; the tool needs to be adjusted in order to be clearer; the purpose and consequences of the tool are ambiguous; and the tool supports a palliative approach. Rationale: Patients in secure forensic psychiatric care have reduced autonomy because of the constraints imposed on them by compulsion laws. Thus, it is vital that nurses enable patient participation whenever possible. Patient participation, and it′s clinical use in forensic psychiatric care, is an understudied field. Aim: To describe nurses' experiences of their work with patient participation in forensic psychiatric care. Methods: Managers at different secure forensic psychiatric institutions in the south of Sweden approved the study, and oral consent was retrieved from informants. Interviews guided by a semi‐structured interview guide were conducted with nine nurses from five different forensic psychiatric institutions and analysed with content analysis. Findings: Nurses describe diverse understandings and abilities in an inflexible setting. This indicates that what participation is, and how to achieve it, is not the same for nurses as for patients. Moreover, patients have different abilities to participate, and the secure setting in itself is perceived as hindering participatory work. Still, participation is described as a crucial part of work that requires a caring relationship. Furthermore, nurses pronounce potentially excluding attitudes and strategies that may obstruct patient participation for all, and at the same time, they have a belief that improvement is possible. Conclusion: Compulsory forensic psychiatric care is a complex care context that requires constant efforts from nurses to balance patients' rights and needs with mandatory care. The very nature of this caring context appears to be a major obstacle when promoting patient participation. Nevertheless, nurses express that they do aim for patient participation, 'they try'. From a patient's perspective, trying is not sufficient and a need for improvement is evident. The results can be of clinical interest in similar secure forensic psychiatric nursing settings, and a point of departure in future development of care striving for increased patient participation for all. Background: Patient participation is associated with satisfaction and improved health‐related outcomes. In gastrointestinal endoscopy, patient participation is an underexplored area. Objective: To gain understanding on patients' experiences, attitudes and preferences concerning patient participation in the endoscopy pathway. Methods: Semi‐structured interviews with endoscopy patients (n = 17, female n = 8, male n = 9, ages 19‐80 years) were performed. Interview transcripts were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Participants were recruited by purposive sampling from an endoscopy unit in a Swedish university hospital. Inclusion:≥ 18 years, fluency in Swedish and recent experience of endoscopy at the unit. Results: Five generic categories emerged, two within the area of the patient's role, which was described as active or passive/included or excluded. Another three generic categories related to factors, critical to active participation, including organizational aspects, impressions of staff and individual circumstances were identified. In this context, patient participation described in the interviews was on a low to basic level, although sometimes reaching a higher level when staff 'invited' patients in decision making. Discussion: This study contributes to the understanding of patient participation in endoscopy. Patients are in an inferior position and need support from the staff for an active role in their care. Although there were variations on the perceived importance of different factors, a heavy responsibility lies on the endoscopy staff to acknowledge the patients' individual needs and to facilitate patient participation. Background: When a relative with a critical illness is admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU), it can be a life‐changing event for the partner. There is a lack of studies that focus on the partners' experiences of the time after intensive care. Aims and objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of partners of intensive care survivors and their need for support after intensive care. Design: A qualitative descriptive design was used. Methods: Six semi‐structured interviews was conducted in Sweden and analysed using inductive content analysis with inspiration from Graneheim and Lundman. Results: Three categories emerged from the data: Being in chaos when a partner needs intensive care, Being the one who everyone depends on, and Life goes on after intensive care. The findings indicate that life goes on after intensive care even if recovery takes time, and during that time, the partners need comforting support from people around them. Conclusion: Partners need extensive and continuous support from health care staff and others during and after intensive care. Intensive care leads, on the one hand, to a sense of chaos for the partner, but on the other hand, if the family relations are strengthened and the partner receives the right kind of comforting support, it can relieve the chaos and facilitate a smoother recovery path to help them view the future more positively. Relevance to clinical practice: This study can contribute knowledge that guides nurses in the ICU and at the ICU follow‐up service and could also help nurses in other areas of care in communication with relatives. Background: Young children's experiences of everyday life with cancer are vital in guiding care. The universal and interdisciplinary language of the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for Children and Youth (ICF‐CY) has wide reaching effects for the care of young children in need. The aim of this study was to select and validate the content of a clinical assessment tool (CAT) for health and everyday functioning in young children with cancer. Methods: A comprehensive set of ICF‐CY codes (n = 70) mapping everyday function and health was previously identified from the transcripts of 12 interviews with young children with cancer and their parents at a paediatric oncology centre in the west of Sweden. Three transcripts were from data collected shortly after diagnosis, three transcripts from 6 months after diagnosis, three transcripts from 12 months after diagnosis, and three transcripts from 18 months after diagnosis. The present study involved the development of items based on the ICF‐CY codes. Results: The CAT consists of 52 items grouped in four dimensions: "the child herself/himself," "the child's everyday life," "the child's need for support," and "the child's contacts with health care." Conclusion: The questions correlate well with known research results and highlight areas that are important for health and everyday life for young children with cancer. This tool, based on children's experiences, can be used by both parents and health care personnel such as nurses to highlight aspects of health and function in everyday life for the young child with cancer that otherwise might be missed. Aims: The prevalence and hospitalizations of patients with heart failure (HF) aged <55 years have increased in Sweden during the last decades. We aimed to compare characteristics of younger and older patients with HF, and examine survival in patients <55 years compared with matched controls.Methods and Results: All patients ≥18 years in the Swedish Heart Failure Register from 2003 to 2014 were included. Data were merged with National Patient and Cause of Death Registers. Among 60 962 patients, 3752 (6.2%) were <55 years, and were compared with 7425 controls from the Population Register. Compared with patients ≥55 years, patients <55 years more frequently had registered diagnoses of obesity, dilated cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease, and an ejection fraction <40% (9.8% vs. 4.7%, 27.2% vs. 5.5%, 3.7% vs. 0.8%, 67.9% vs. 45.1%, respectively; all P < 0.001). One-year all-cause mortality was 21.2%, 4.2%, and 0.3% in patients ≥55 years, patients <55 years, and controls <55 years, respectively (all P < 0.001). Patients <55 years had a five times higher mortality risk compared with controls [hazard ratio (HR) 5.48, 95% confidence interval (CI) 4.45-6.74]; the highest HR was in patients 18-34 years (HR 38.3, 95% CI 8.70-169; both P < 0.001). At the age of 20, the estimated life-years lost was up to 36 years for 50% of patients, with declining estimates with increasing age.Conclusion: Patients with HF <55 years had different comorbidities than patients ≥55 years. Background: This study focuses on patient complaints from a human rights perspective. Despite the UN Convention on Human Rights being widely recognized, it has not previously been examined in relation to patients' complaints on health care. A human rights perspective and the right to the highest attainable standard of health are a major sustainability challenge in health care today. Previous research points to patients' complaints as a growing concern for health‐care organizations, and the handling of this concern can lead to improvement in health‐care services. Objective: The aim was to analyse patients' complaints on health‐care services and to examine expressed needs for health care from a human rights perspective. Methods: In this descriptive study, a random sample of 170 patient complaints about Swedish health‐care services were qualitatively analysed from a human rights perspective. Results: The complaints are described in three themes: the right to available and accessible health‐care services, the right to good quality health‐care services and the right to dignity and equality in health care. Questions of availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality are highlighted by patients and/or relatives making complaints on health‐care services. Discussion and Conclusion: This study emphasizes the human right to health in relation to patient complaints. Findings indicate that this right has been breached in relation to availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality in health‐care services. The Sami are an indigenous population with multiple languages and dialects living in northern areas of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula. The South Sami population lives in central regions of Sweden and Norway, and consist of about 2000 people. In this study, 56 older South Sami people from Sweden participated. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted over the telephone and analysed through qualitative content analysis. The main findings show that older South Sami people's expectations of having care providers with a South Sami background speaking South Sami in home nursing care contain contradictions in and between participants. Participants had different preferences regarding having care providers with a South Sami background speaking South Sami in the future. When providing care to older South Sami people, individual adjustments are of importance, and our study showed that participants had different expectations despite having similar backgrounds. Sleeping difficulties are increasingly prevalent among adolescents worldwide and have negative consequences for adolescent health and education. The aim of this study was to describe the reasons for sleeping difficulties as perceived by adolescents. Sleeping difficulties include insufficient sleep, trouble falling asleep, waking up at night or sleep that does not leave an individual rested. Data were collected in 2015 using an open‐ended question. The sample consisted of n = 475 adolescents from a city in Sweden, aged 15–16 years, with self‐assessed sleeping difficulties. The results described the reasons for the adolescents' sleeping difficulties, at a general, thematic level, as an imbalance between requirements and preconditions, distributed to stress, technology use, poor sleep habits, existential thoughts, needs and suffering. To find a balance in their daily lives, adolescents may need support from parents, school nurses and school health services to deal with their sleeping difficulties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To examine whether a method for raising women's awareness of fetal movements, Mindfetalness, can affect pregnancy outcomes.Design: Cluster-randomised controlled trial.Setting: Sixty-seven maternity clinics in Stockholm, Sweden.Population: Women with singleton pregnancy with birth from 32 weeks' gestation.Methods: Women registered at a clinic randomised to Mindfetalness were assigned to receive a leaflet about Mindfetalness (n = 19 639) in comparison with routine care (n = 20 226). Data were collected from a population-based register.Main Outcome Measures: Apgar score <7 at 5 minutes after birth, visit to healthcare due to decrease in fetal movements. Other outcomes: Apgar score <4 at 5 minutes after birth, small-for-gestational-age and mode of delivery.Results: No difference (1.1 versus 1.1%, relative risk [RR] 1.0; 95% CI 0.8-1.2) was found between the Mindfetalness group and the Routine care group for a 5-minute Apgar score <7. Women in the Mindfetalness group contacted healthcare more often due to decreased fetal movements (6.6 versus 3.8%, RR 1.72; 95% CI 1.57-1.87). Mindfetalness was associated with a reduction of babies born small-for-gestational-age (RR 0.95, 95% CI 0.90-1.00), babies born after gestational week 41+6 (RR 0.91, 95% CI 0.83-0.98) and caesarean sections (19.0 versus 20.0%, RR 0.95; 95% CI 0.91-0.99).Conclusions: Mindfetalness did not reduce the number of babies born with an Apgar score <7. Aim: To describe parents of extremely preterm children experiences regarding feeding of their children during the first 3 years of the child's life.Methods: This is a qualitative study involving interviews conducted with 12 parents of nine children who had been cared for at one neonatal intensive care unit in Sweden. The interviews were conducted between May and September 2018; the data were analysed using qualitative content analysis.Results: All parents experienced some difficulties with their child's eating development and described feeding their child as sometimes both difficult and frustrating. Variation in when these difficulties arose made it hard for the parents to obtain the individual support they wanted and needed. Parents experienced a need for more support - from both staff members and parents with similar experiences - during and after their child's stay at the NICU.Conclusion: All parents participating in the study experienced difficulties during some phase of their child's feeding development. Objective: Novel, highly effective disease-modifying therapies have revolutionized multiple sclerosis (MS) care. However, evidence from large comparative studies on important safety outcomes, such as cancer, is still lacking.Methods: In this nationwide register-based cohort study, we linked data from the Swedish MS register to the Swedish Cancer Register and other national health care and census registers. We included 4,187 first-ever initiations of rituximab, 1,620 of fingolimod, and 1,670 of natalizumab in 6,136 MS patients matched for age, sex, and location to 37,801 non-MS general population subjects. Primary outcome was time to first invasive cancer.Results: We identified 78 invasive cancers among treated patients: rituximab 33 (incidence rate [IR] per 10,000 person-years = 34.4, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 23.7-48.3), fingolimod 28 (IR = 44.0, 95% CI = 29.2-63.5), and natalizumab 17 (IR = 26.0, 95% CI = 15.1-41.6). The general population IR was 31.0 (95% CI = 27.8-34.4). Adjusting for baseline characteristics, we found no difference in risk of invasive cancer between rituximab, natalizumab, and the general population but a possibly higher risk with fingolimod compared to the general population (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.53, 95% CI = 0.98-2.38) and rituximab (HR = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.00-2.84).Interpretation: In this first large comparative study of 3 highly effective MS disease-modifying therapies, no increased risk of invasive cancer was seen with rituximab and natalizumab, compared to the general population. However, there was a borderline-significant increased risk with fingolimod, compared to both the general population and rituximab. Patients find forensic psychiatric care inadequate in that they are not treated as individuals and not involved in their own care. The purpose of this study was to describe patients' experiences and perceptions of forensic psychiatric inpatient care. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 11 inpatients. A qualitative content analysis resulted in a recurring theme, 'I know what I need to recover', and three main categories: 'A need for meaning in a meagre existence', 'A need to be a person in an impersonal context', and 'A need for empowerment in a restricted life'. Participants experienced and perceived forensic care as predominantly monotonous, predetermined, and not adapted to them as individuals, forcing them to fight and adapt to get through it and not lose themselves. Perceived needs were largely ignored or opposed by staff due to the content and structure of care. Findings suggest a need for reflective practices and patient involvement in order to develop and maintain a person‐centred and recovery‐oriented nursing practice. The study adds to previous research showing the importance of patients in forensic psychiatric inpatient care being listened to and involved in their care. Aims: Patients with advanced heart failure (AdHF) who are ineligible for heart transplantation (HTx) can become candidates for treatment with a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) in some countries, but not others. This reflects the lack of a systematic analysis of the usefulness of LVAD systems in this context, and of their benefits, limitations and cost-effectiveness. The SWEdish evaluation of left Ventricular Assist Device (SweVAD) study is a Phase IV, prospective, 1:1 randomized, non-blinded, multicentre trial that will examine the impact of assignment to mechanical circulatory support with guideline-directed LVAD destination therapy (GD-LVAD-DT) using the HeartMate 3 (HM3) continuous flow pump vs. guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) on survival in a population of AdHF patients ineligible for HTx.Methods: A total of 80 patients will be recruited to SweVAD at the seven university hospitals in Sweden. The study population will comprise patients with AdHF (New York Heart Association class IIIB-IV, INTERMACS profile 2-6) who display signs of poor prognosis despite GDMT and who are not considered eligible for HTx. Participants will be followed for 2 years or until death occurs. Other endpoints will be determined by blinded adjudication. Patients who remain on study-assigned interventions beyond 2 years will be asked to continue follow-up for outcomes and adverse events for up to 5 years.Conclusion: The SweVAD study will compare survival, medium-term benefits, costs and potential hazards between GD-LVAD-DT and GDMT and will provide a valuable reference point to guide destination therapy strategies for patients with AdHF ineligible for HTx. Objective: To study the risk of vaginal cancer among hysterectomised women with and without cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN).Design: Population-based national cohort study.Setting and Population: All Swedish women, 5 million in total, aged 20 and up, 1987-2011 using national registries.Methods: The study cohort was subdivided into four exposure groups: hysterectomised with no previous history of CIN3 and without prevalent CIN at hysterectomy; hysterectomised with a history of CIN3/adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS); hysterectomised with prevalent CIN at hysterectomy; non-hysterectomised.Main Outcome Measure: Vaginal cancer.Results: We identified 898 incident cases of vaginal cancer. Women with prevalent CIN at hysterectomy and those with a history of CIN3/AIS had incidence rates (IR) of vaginal cancer of 51.3 (95% CI 34.4-76.5) and 17.1 (95% CI 12.5-23.4) per 100 000, respectively. Age-adjusted IR-ratios (IRRs) compared with hysterectomised women with benign cervical history were 21.0 (95% CI 13.4-32.9) and 5.81 (95% CI 4.00-8.43), respectively. IR for non-hysterectomised women was 0.87 (95% CI 0.81-0.93) and IRR was 0.37 (95% CI 0.30-0.46). In hysterectomised women with prevalent CIN, the IR remained high after 15 years of follow up: 65.7 (95% CI 21.2-203.6).Conclusions: Our findings suggest that hysterectomised women with prevalent CIN at surgery should be offered surveillance. Hysterectomised women without the studied risk factors have a more than doubled risk of contracting vaginal cancer compared with non-hysterectomised women in the general population. This study is part of a larger research project designed to examine the view of home nursing care from the perspective of older South Sami people in Sweden. In the present study, we present findings from the point of view of their expectations of home nursing care. The Sami are an indigenous population living in northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Kola Peninsula, and consist of different Sami people, of which the South Sami population is one. This population consists of approximately 2000 persons living in the central regions of Sweden and Norway. Fifty‐six older South Sami people participated in the study. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted over the telephone and were analysed using latent content analysis. The main findings show how older South Sami people's expectation for home nursing care contains the same care providers over time, individual adjustments and competent care providers and do not differ from the general Swedish population. Interpersonal interaction is a hallmark of nursing care and other healthcare disciplines. Ideally, interpersonal care is achieved when individual care providers have few care receivers, which promote continuity in care, individual adjustments based on the care receivers individual needs and care providers with professional and relational competence. Background: Diaries as an intervention to aid psychological recovery among intensive care patients have been used for about 20 years, and findings tend to be positive. The provision of a diary directed at the patient may clarify the story of the intensive care unit (ICU) even for the family members and the family members of non‐survivors. Members of nursing staff are the primary authors, but how they themselves experience the use of ICU diaries has been minimally explored. Aims and objectives: This study aimed to explore how nursing staff experienced the use of ICU patient diaries. Design: Qualitative design using focus group interviews. Methods: A qualitative methodology was used. Six focus group interviews were conducted with 27 nursing staff recruited from one university and two county hospitals. The data were analysed via thematic content analysis. Findings One overarching theme, 'An effort to do good in words and actions', and four interconnected themes were derived from the analysis. By creating the diary, nursing staff had to deal with a variety of ethical and practical dilemmas, but feedback from patients, family members and ICU follow‐up services reinforced the feeling of doing good. This overarching feeling of beneficence encouraged diary authoring and increased motivation and commitment to strive towards excellent patient care. To sustain the use of ICU diaries, collegiate and organizational support was deemed essential. Conclusions: Nursing staff strived to do good in words and actions for patients and their families when writing the diaries. Positive feedback from patients, family members and ICU follow‐up services reinforced feelings of doing good, which served to enhance work satisfaction and a commitment to good‐quality nursing care. Experiential‐based education was recommended to help sustain ICU diary writing. Background: Oral health is important for well‐being and overall health. Older peoples′ oral health is well described in the residential care context, but remains understudied in short‐term care. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe oral health, daily oral care and related factors among older people in short‐term care and to compare self‐perceived oral health with professional assessment. Materials and methods: This cross‐sectional study included 391 older people in 36 short‐term units in 19 Swedish municipalities. Oral health was assessed professionally by clinical oral assessment and the Revised Oral Assessment Guide (ROAG). The older peoples' perceptions of their own oral health were measured with a global question on self‐perceived oral health. Self‐care ability was assessed with Katz Index of Activities of Daily Living (Katz‐ADL). Results: Mean age was 82.9 years, 19% of participants were totally edentulous, and 43% had ≥20 teeth. Almost 60% had coating or food debris on their teeth, but only 19% received help with daily oral care. Those who were dependent on help with self‐care had around a sixfold higher risk of having oral problems. There was a low level of agreement between the clinical assessment based on ROAG and self‐perceived oral health. Conclusion: Professionals' assessments of oral health differed considerably from the older peoples′ own assessments. A higher risk of oral problems and more occurrence of coating or food debris or broken teeth were seen among those dependent on help with self‐care (ADL). This study indicates that in order to improve older peoples′ oral health and oral care we need to provide person‐centred oral care and to develop a close collaboration between nursing and dental staff. Workplace bullying is a taboo event which occurs worldwide, although the prevalence varies significantly between and within countries. Nurses have been regarded an occupational risk group for bullying at the work place. Bullying in health and social care contexts is sometimes reported as frequent and, other times, as not occurring, which sparked our interest in mapping the occurrence of bullying in the health and social care system in Sweden. Thus, the purpose of the study was to examine the prevalence of bullying, and to discuss cultural traditions and environmental factors that affect bullying in workplaces. The sample (n = 2810) consisted of employees at inpatient wards at four hospitals, and employees at municipal eldercare wards in Sweden. A questionnaire including NAQ‐22 R was distributed and subsequently analysed with descriptive statistics using SPSS. The youngest group of respondents scored higher than the older groups. Using contrasting estimates of bullying, the prevalence varied between 4.1 and 18.5%, with the lowest prevalence in regards to self‐reported exposure. According to the cut‐off scores, NAQ‐22 R, 8.6% of the respondents were occasionally exposed to bullying while 2.3% were considered to be victims of severe bullying. Work‐related negative acts were more common than personal negative acts. The variations in prevalence of bullying as a result of contrasting estimation strategies are discussed from perspective of the 'law of Jante', the 'tall poppy syndrome' and shame. Aim: The study aims to investigate secular changes in adult height among Nordic reference populations during the last four decades and in parents of Swedish study participants, and to study during which growth phase(s) infancy, childhood or puberty changes in height and tempo occurred.Methods: Length and height data were obtained from publications on populations used as current and previous national height references in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Measurements from birth until adult height and original parental heights of participants in Swedish reference populations born 1956, 1974, and 1990 were used.Results: Adult height has increased progressively in Nordic populations born in 1950s-1990s; for females by 6 mm/decade Norway, 4 mm; Sweden, 6 mm; Finland and Denmark, 7 mm; for males by 9 mm/decade, in Sweden, 5 mm; Finland, 7 mm; Denmark 8 mm; Norway, 15 mm. This was due to more growth during childhood despite earlier timing of mid-puberty. Heights of Swedish parents born 1920s-1960s increased 11 mm/decade for mothers, 14 mm/decade for fathers.Conclusion: The Nordic countries comprise some of the tallest populations in the world yet continue to show a positive secular change in adult height alongside a faster tempo of growth by earlier timing of puberty, highlighting the need to regularly update national height references. Background: Understanding how nursing students in European countries perceive their future professional role is an important step in creating awareness of the diversity and similarities between countries. Investigating nursing students' perceptions of their future profession could help in the design of education and the retention of nurses. Aim: To compare nursing students' perceptions of the professional nurse's role between Belarus, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden. Method: A cross‐sectional design was implemented. The study used two scales of the Professional Nursing Image Survey, which has questions about 10 skills and abilities and 14 functions and duties of a nurse. Results: A total of 392 final‐year nursing students in four countries participated in the study. Statistically significant differences were found between countries in terms of all 10 skills and abilities and in the distribution of responses concerning functions and duties of a nurse. Conclusions: Nursing students in Belarus, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden perceive differently the role of a nurse in terms of some functions and responsibilities. This may influence the adaptation of nurses who enjoy freedom of movement among the countries. Implications for nursing policy: The knowledge gained in this study could be beneficial in improving nursing education, as it could illuminate the discrepancy between educational goals and students' perceptions of their future professional role. Background: Being involved in the care of a loved one is a desire of many next of kin. However, according to several studies of the perceptions of nursing home staff, the involvement of next of kin is not an obvious part of care. To be able to involve next of kin in care at nursing homes, the perceptions of what participation means are an important piece of knowledge. The aim of this study was therefore to describe variations in next of kin's perceptions of the meaning of participation in the care of older persons living in nursing homes. Methods: Eighteen next of kin of older persons living in ten nursing homes in Sweden were recruited for interviews. The study design was based on a phenomenographic approach, focusing on the qualitatively different ways in which a person perceives, experiences or conceptualises a phenomenon or certain aspect of reality. Results: Five categories emerged from analysis of the interviews, representing the next of kin's perceptions of the meaning of participation in the care of older persons in nursing homes: be present; communicate; monitor; do practical tasks; and to represent. The next of kin expressed meanings that belonged to more than one category, and the categories were interdependent. Conclusions: Our results indicate that there are several meanings of next of kin's perceptions of participation at nursing homes. Nursing home staff's knowledge of these perceptions is important to enable next of kin to participate according to their own preferences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Children who have parents with any kind of illness may become young carers who take a responsibility not expected of children for household tasks, or personal or emotional care for parents and siblings. So far, little is known about children in Sweden who are at risk of becoming young carers. The aim of this article is therefore to explore the extent and impact of children's caring activities as reported in a pilot study by a sample of children in Sweden. A number of international questionnaires measuring the amount of caring activities, impact of caring, quality of life, and psychological well‐being were translated and combined into a survey. The pilot survey was completed by 30 children 10–18 years of age. Also, when completing the survey, the children were interviewed concerning their experiences of caregiving. The participants report on a group level emotional symptoms such as fear and nervousness above the clinical cut‐off value. They also rate a lower level of caring compared with findings from the United Kingdom, but they report a higher degree of negative impact of caring than young carers in the United Kingdom.
