Although the ability to develop latent fingerprints on paper using heat alone has been noted previously, it has been considered impractical for casework and inferior to other techniques. Here a new refinement of the technique is demonstrated for the high quality development of latent fingerprints on porous surfaces such as paper. Fingerprints deposited on various papers were developed by exposing them to hot air with a temperature in the vicinity of 300°C, for periods of c. 10–20 sec. Several different heating methods were tested. The novel observation was made that after shorter heating times, fluorescent prints could be observed. These became visible after longer heating times, as noted by earlier workers, but with greatly improved contrast compared with their results. Prints from various donors (and aged prints) were developed with excellent ridge contrast. Direct heating methods (such as with a hot plate or press) produced inferior results. The refined technique, which is simple, safe and inexpensive compared with conventional methods, has great potential for use in forensic laboratories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crago et al. published two papers in Water Resources Research in 2016 and 2018, respectively, which discussed recent generalized complementary evaporation relationships; they recommended that the lower boundary condition of the Generalized Nonlinear Advection-Aridity (GNAA) model proposed by Brutsaert (2015, https://doi.org/10.1002/2015WR017720) should be modified to y = 0 at x = xmin, where xmin-[0,1]. First, it is shown herein that the rescaled complementary relationship (CR) y = X, proposed by Crago et al., does not advance the analysis forward, but that instead the rescaling is tantamount to a reversion to an earlier linear and more traditional asymmetric complementary model, in which the parameter b is a function of xmin. In fact, at xmin = 0, y = X the rescaled formulation becomes physically unrealistic. The second part of this comment deals with the extended quartic form of GNAA model. The nature of the adjustable parameter c in this extended formulation is further explored, and it is shown that while its lower limit is -1, calibration with actual data can result in values in excess of 2. Such calibration allows then the estimation of xmin as a function of c, that is, xmin = f (c). This way, in addition to satisfying the original four boundary conditions, the extended GNAA model also satisfies the boundary condition of y = 0 at x = xmin. This paper suggests that the nymphs of a specialist predator, Kirkaldyia (= Lethocerus) deyrolli (Belostomatidae: Heteroptera), are indirectly affected by their tadpoles’ prey. K. deyrolli nymphs and the predator Laccotrephes japonensis (Nepidae: Heteroptera) adults coexist in rice paddy fields. It was predicted that the difference in tadpole density may influence the K. deyrolli nymph survival rate. We first compared survival rates of the first instar nymphs of K. deyrolli in June (high tadpole density period) and July (low tadpole density period). Secondly, we investigated the survival rate of K. deyrolli nymphs at different tadpole densities and under the presence or absence of L. japonensis adults to examine whether higher tadpole density moderates predation pressure from L. japonensis adults to K. deyrolli nymphs, e.g., density-mediated indirect effects. As a result of the comparison, the survival rate of K. deyrolli nymphs in June was higher than that in July. For the field experiment, the slopes between the survival rate of K. deyrolli nymphs and tadpole density were positive under both predator presence and absence. However, the slope under the presence of a predator was steeper than that under absence of the predator (“predator-by-tadpole density interaction” was significant). These results suggest that a higher tadpole density in June provides an abundant food resource for K. deyrolli nymphs and also moderates predation pressure from L. japonensis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two main approaches can be used for determining the age of an ink: indirect dating and direct dating. Indirect dating is based on the chemical analysis of an ink followed by comparison with known samples in a reference collection. The collection should contain information about the inks including the market introduction dates. This approach may allow for an anachronism to be detected. The second concept is based on measuring ink components that change with age. The analysis of solvents in ballpoint inks may be a useful parameter for determining the age of ink on paper. In a previous study, the authors demonstrated that thermal desorption of ink directly from paper, followed by chemical analysis using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), is a promising procedure for characterizing ink-binder resins and solvents. Preliminary tests showed that monitoring the evaporation of ink solvent from ink on paper is not a suitable method for ink dating. Thermal analysis of ink on paper in two steps revealed that fresh ink releases a relative amount of solvent at a certain low temperature in a defined period of time, which decreases as the ink ages. As a consequence, this relative amount of solvent released at a certain low temperature, and its decrease with time, can be used to estimate ink age. This age-dependent parameter was studied in 85 different inks ranging in age from 1 week to 1.5 years. It was found that some inks showed a significant decrease of this parameter up to an age of several months, and that the aging process can be monitored within this period. For other inks, however, the age-dependent parameter decreases relatively fast, e.g., within a few days, to a constant level, which can be too fast for casework. Background and Aims: A developing international literature on population-based occupational intervention provides limited evidence of the ways in which the associated occupational therapy roles are developed among entry-level practitioners. This paper aims to explore the development of an occupational therapy role in a fieldwork placement from the perspective of a student and the off-site supervisor and to explore the use of Organisational Role Analysis in this process. Methods: Systems psychodynamics and an occupational perspective of health provided the theoretical framework for this participant observation case study. Data from the reflective diaries of a fourth-year student and her supervisor were analysed with respect to role development in an organisation where occupational therapy was welcome, but not completely understood. Results: This study provides insight into the challenges for students and supervisors in the development of an occupationally oriented role where the client is an organisation. Organisational Role Analysis was perceived to be helpful in focusing attention on the organisational context of role development. Conclusions: The application of the Organisational Role Analysis as an approach to student supervision in other settings, with more than one student and to facilitate professionally development warrants further investigation. In this paper I have provided analytical and empirical evidence of the association between abnormal returns and the reliability of the beta estimate used in the calculation of abnormal returns. This relationship may confound information content studies to the extent the event of interest does not impact abnormal returns at a level which overrides this problem. In such cases, the researcher may wish to control for this confounding problem by standardizing the abnormal returns—a procedure first used by Patell [1976]. As an aside, the empirical results also confirm the suggestion by Brown and Warner [1980] that shortening the test period around the event date increases the ability to pick up any abnormal returns. Since the empirical results presented here were based on monthly returns, the severity of the beta reliability problem arising with weekly or daily observations was not assessed. Poly(1‐methylpyrol‐2‐ylsquaraine) particles can be prepared in a one‐pot reaction by refluxing equimolar amounts of squaric acid (3,4‐dihydroxycyclobut‐3‐ene‐1,2‐dione) and 1‐methylpyrrole in butan‐1‐ol and precipitate from the reaction as porous micrometer‐sized spheres that have potential use as molecular adsorbents in chromatography and sensors, as well as ion batteries. Previous papers that have examined the electrical, photophysical, and adsorption properties of these particles have reported their size and shape, with appropriate proof in the form of electron microscope images but have paid little attention as to the actual limits of the particle size and spherical formation. Thus, a range of experiments have been undertaken to examine the robustness, in terms of reaction variation, of the construction of these spheres. Reaction characteristics such as solvent, sequence in which reactants are added, reaction time, reactant concentration, and mode of reaction agitation have all been examined to determine the optimal conditions for the production of these spheres. Fortuitously, butan‐1‐ol remains the most suitable solvent, but reactant concentration is important to produce uniformly sized spherical particles with minimal interparticle growth. This paper deals with technological solutions of innovative engine encapsulation systems for automotive. The aim of this device is to insulate acoustically and thermally the engine from the environment, in order to keep its temperature higher for more hours after it has been switched off. If the engine is subsequently started within this interval, the higher temperature involving the lubricating oil will allow reducing its viscosity, resulting in a lower level of energy dissipation due to friction losses, a lower fuel consumption and, consequently, a lower CO2 emission level. This paper investigates the dynamic response of the transport unit of beer bottle‐turnover boxes under the random vibration excitation by using the experiments and finite element (FE) analysis and provides an analytical method of random vibration for a contact nonlinear transport unit with a jumping body through a case study. The acceleration power spectral density (PSD) of the bottle in a single‐layer transport unit and in a bottom layer of a two‐layer transport unit is unimodal; however, that on a top layer of the two‐layer transport unit is basically bimodal. The acceleration response of the bottle in the bottom layer is mainly controlled by a peak frequency and the corresponding excitation PSD near the peak frequency and that on the top layer by two peak frequencies and the corresponding excitation PSDs. The critical stress is located at the bottom and shoulder for the bottle and in the reinforcement area of the bottom plate or at the side‐stiffening plate for the turnover box. Aging building structure has become a world problem. This problem is particularly serious in developing and underdeveloped countries. The multihazard resilience and sustainability (e.g., seismic performance) decrease at the aging building. A construction method for strengthening aging-reinforced concrete buildings by wrapping structural members with carbon fiber sheets has been proposed and implemented in recent years. Authors aim to develop a seismic retrofitting method of aging concrete structural wall with a rectangular cross section using carbon fiber sheets. In this paper, authors examined the stress-strain relationship of concrete elements with rectangular cross sections reinforced by wrapping with carbon fiber sheets. Monotonic uniaxial compression tests were performed on 21 specimens using the ratio of the long side to the short side and the ratio of the element height to the short side of the concrete cross section, the weight of the carbon fiber sheet, and the chamfer radius of section corners as variables. The tests revealed that (1) the compressive strength decreases and ultimate strain increases as the ratio of the long to short side (longitudinal ratio) of the cross section increases even in a range the ratio exceeds 2 and (2) the ratio of the element height to the short side does not significantly affect the stress-strain relationship. Furthermore, authors proposed evaluation formulas for the constitutive law of concrete elements with rectangular cross sections including the longitudinal ratio which exceeds 2 reinforced by carbon fiber sheets and confirmed that the formulas can reproduce the test results with good accuracy. The paper deals with the high‐cycle fatigue behaviour of steel butt‐welded joints in the as‐welded condition, under constant amplitude loading. It tackles the problem of strength assessment by changing the geometrical shape and features of the weldment. This investigation considers the recommendations available in design standards, particularly referring to the Eurocodes, and it re‐analyses experimental data where a clear profile of the actual weld shape is available. For the available weld profiles, numerical investigations are shown by applying the Implicit Gradient approach for the evaluation of the nonlocal effective stress in the fatigue strength assessment. The results are very promising since the nonlocal approach significantly agrees with design standard recommendations in conventional cases, but it is also able to provide specific indications on the influence of the geometrical features, as well as the tip radius and opening angles, specifying their influence when no explicitly detailed indications are available in the design standards. Background: Healthcare is not without risk. Despite two decades of policy focus and improvement efforts, the global incidence of harm remains stubbornly persistent, with estimates suggesting that 10% of hospital patients are affected by adverse events. Methods: We explore how current investigative responses can compound the harm for all those affected—patients, families, health professionals and organizations—by neglecting to appreciate and respond to the human impacts. We suggest that the risk of compounded harm may be reduced when investigations respond to the need for healing alongside system learning, with the former having been consistently neglected. Discussion: We argue that incident responses must be conceived within a relational as well as a regulatory framework, and that this—a restorative approach—has the potential to radically shift the focus, conduct and outcomes of investigative processes. Conclusion: The identification of the preconditions and mechanisms that enable the success of restorative approaches in global health systems and legal contexts is required if their demonstrated potential is to be realized on a larger scale. The policy must be co‐created by all those who will be affected by reforms and be guided by restorative principles. Today, brucellosis is the most common global bacterial zoonosis, bringing with it a range of significant health and economic consequences, yet it is rarely identified from the archaeological record. Detection and understanding of past zoonoses could be improved by triangulating evidence and proxies generated through different approaches. The complex socioecological systems that support zoonoses involve humans, animals, and pathogens interacting within specific environmental and cultural contexts, and as such, there is a diversity of potential datasets that can be targeted. To capture this, in this paper, we consider how to approach the study of zoonotic brucellosis in the past from a One Health perspective, one which explicitly acknowledges the health link between people, animals, and environments (both physical and cultural). One Health research is explicitly interdisciplinary and conceptually moves away from an anthropocentric approach, allowing the component parts to be considered in holistic and integrated ways to deliver more comprehensive understanding. To this end, in this paper, we review the methods, selected evidence, and potential for past brucellosis identification and understanding, focussing on osteological markers in humans and animals, historical, biomolecular, and epidemiological approaches. This paper is concerned with relationships between the use of information technology at different stages of the knowledge management technology stage model and the performance of police investigation units. The model consists of four stages: officer-to-technology systems, officer-to-officer systems, officer-to-information systems, and officer-to-application systems. The model was applied for information technology business value research, which examines the organizational performance impacts of information technology. In this paper we applied the value configuration of the value shop to describe and measure organizational performance. Based on an empirical study of Norwegian police investigation units, this research found that officer-to-technology systems and officer-to-information systems are the most important systems to improve police investigations in the value shop. The Scottish government plans a more preventive and partnership‐oriented approach to child protection. However, it has not recently published statistics on the number of child protection investigations. This paper analyses data from a request for information from government. It shows a rate of 153 investigations per 10 000 children aged 0–17 in 2017/18. There were wide variations in rates of investigations across Scottish local authorities. Almost three‐quarters of investigations in 2017/18 did not lead to the child being placed on the child protection register. A small association between investigation rates and local authority deprivation suggests that factors other than deprivation at the local authority level are at play in decisions to investigate child protection. There has been an increase of investigations by one‐third in the last two years with no change in the numbers starting a child protection plan. These trends raise the possibility that concerns about the preventive approach net‐widening and leading to more rather than less children drawn into the formal child protection system may have some basis. The limited nature of published statistical data in Scotland means that policies and activities, which are carried out with large amounts of public funding, receive limited public scrutiny. There is significant variation in practice when managing couples with recurrent miscarriage (RM), with guidelines differing on the definition of RM, recommended investigations, and treatment options. In the absence of evidence‐based guidance, and following on from a paper by the authors—FIGO Good Practice Recommendations on the use of progesterone in the management of recurrent first‐trimester miscarriage—this narrative review aims to propose a global holistic approach. In this paper, a new design of microstrip power limiter which is based on microstrip technology and zero bias Schottky diode is introduced. In this context, the FR‐4 substrate that was characterized by dielectric permittivity (4.4), dielectric thickness (1.6 mm), and the HSMS 286k Schottky diode is used to design the proposed power limiter. The planar resonators are designed, optimized, and simulated with the shunting of the HSMS 286k diodes by using Schematic solver integrated in ADS from Agilent Technologies. The simulation results are significant in terms of high impedance matching, strong insertion of the low power, and good limitation ratio of the high power. The proposed power limiter is fabricated and tested in the measurement part. It is observed that the results are in agreement with the numerical analysis in terms of matching, isolation, and power limitation. The achieved microwave power limiter offers simple construction, small size (44 × 40 mm2), wide bandwidth, and good limitation ratio less than 10 dBm when the input power reaches 30 dBm. This paper reconstructs Foucault's concept of illegalism and explores its significance for his genealogies of modern punishment and racial formation. The concept of illegalism, as distinct from illegality, plays a double role. It allows Foucault to describe a ruling class tactic for managing inequalities and also to characterize an important vein of resistant subjugated knowledges. The political project of the prison is linked to a new crime policy that does not so much aim to repress illegalisms as to manage them differentially. This practice of differential management, which arises in the 18th century, produces a primary split along class lines between two types of illegalism—an insight that has a certain resonance with Edwin's Sutherland's concept of "white collar crime." Foucault's investigation of a third category of "infralegal illegalism" sheds light not only on the genealogy of the category of delinquency but also on his genealogy of racial categorization. Finally, Foucault argues that a genuinely radical critique of modern society must address the "need" organized political power has for the illegalisms from which it purportedly seeks to protect society. Against this practice of differentially managing illegalisms, Foucault seeks to reactivate a subjugated problematic that might open up questions about the transformative possibilities of illegalism today. In chemical engineering, turbulent shear flows are often encountered. The grid induced separation (GIS) and the slow RANS‐LES transition issues should be alleviated when the delayed detached‐eddy simulation (DDES) is used to simulate turbulent shear flows. This paper studies the performance of the production‐limited DDES (PL‐DDES) model in improving the GIS and the slow RANS‐LES transition issues. Since the simplified IDDES (S‐IDDES) model is proposed to improve the GIS issue, the S‐IDDES model is chosen as the model for comparison. The simulation results show that the PL‐DDES model with constant Cd1 = 14 alleviates the GIS issue better than the S‐IDDES model and the PL‐DDES model with Cd1 = 8. The results of the free shear layer show that the PL‐DDES model can switch RANS to LES more rapidly and unlock the Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability more effectively than the S‐DDES model. For the backward‐facing step flow, the S‐IDDES model performs poorly when unlocking the Kelvin‐Helmholtz instability in the separation zone. On the other hand, the PL‐DDES model has a rapid RANS‐LES transition after the step and produces a significant transport of momentum in the shear layer, leading to reasonable separation distance and flow structures. The reaction mechanism of B4C synthesis as yet remains unclear due to the lack of sufficient thermodynamic investigation, which limits the large‐scale controllable production of B4C ceramic material. In this paper, thermodynamic investigation of B4C synthesized by carbothermal reduction was calculated at atmospheric pressure over a wide temperature range (1500‐2500 K) coupled with the effects of pressure on B4C synthesis. Besides, predominance diagrams for B–C–O system at different temperatures and pressures were further established. Upon thermodynamic results, reaction mechanism was proposed and then verified by the synthesis experiment of B4C at desired temperatures. The thermodynamic investigation indicates that B4C may be synthesized by the reactions of C with liquid B2O3 (LS mechanism) or gaseous B2O2 (VS mechanism). At low temperature (~1823 K), B4C is polyhedral shape via LS mechanism, while two‐dimensional flake‐like B4C is synthesized by VS mechanism at high temperature (2123 K~). The obtained two types of B4C verify the accuracy of thermodynamic results. Does lake evaporation increase or decrease under the scenario of climate warming? This paper aims to answer this question by investigating the controlling mechanism of interannual variations in lake evaporation at a subtropical lake. The research methodology is based on continuous eddy covariance measurement over >7 years and a diagnostic analysis using the surface energy balance principle. The results indicate that lake evaporation was enhanced mainly by increasing energy inputs including solar radiation and incoming longwave radiation and was weakened by surface feedback through outgoing longwave radiation. The incoming longwave radiation was positively correlated with cloud cover. Bowen ratio and surface albedo had slight effect on the change of lake evaporation. The annual lake evaporation can be predicted by the Priestly‐Taylor model using a larger coefficient of 1.39 than the original value of 1.26, suggesting that advection or entrainment in the atmospheric boundary layer may play a role in lake evaporation. In this paper, a new so-called iterative Laplace transform method is implemented to investigate the solution of certain important population models of noninteger order. The iterative procedure is combined effectively with Laplace transformation to develop the suggested methodology. The Caputo operator is applied to express the noninteger derivative of fractional order. The series form solution is obtained having components of convergent behavior toward the exact solution. For justification and verification of the present method, some illustrative examples are discussed. The closed contact is observed between the obtained and exact solutions. This paper investigates the hybrid-driven mechanism problem for Markov jump system, where both channel quantization (BCQ) and network-induced delay based on uncertain network are considered. Firstly, comparing with the traditional event-triggered scheme, a hybrid-driven mechanism is employed in networked control systems (NCSs) for the finite capacity of communication bandwidth resources and system performance in equilibrium. Then, the quantization technology is applied in the communication channel from sensor-to-controller and controller-to-actuator. The application of BCQ is for further investigation that mitigate data packet transmission rate. Thirdly, Markov jump system is modeled for the hybrid-driven mechanism and network-induced delay. By constructing the Lyapunov–Krasovskii function, a sufficient condition is derived as the stability criterion, and the controller is designed in which the nonlinear term is rewritten for simplifying the calculation. In this paper, the angular contact ball bearings under low‐speed and heavy‐load conditions is studied with a coupled numerical method of mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) and quasi‐dynamic analysis. Compared with the quasi‐dynamic analysis without consideration of the mixed lubrication characteristics, the present coupled method reveals a smaller minimum film thickness and a larger frictional coefficient in ball‐race contact interface, leading to increases in the normal contact load, slide‐to‐roll ratio, and relative sliding velocity. Effects of operation condition (eg, rotational speed) and structural parameter (eg, inner raceway curvature coefficient and initial contact angle) on the contact and lubrication performances are discussed. The results show that a larger inner raceway curvature coefficient results in a smaller average film thickness and film thickness ratio, a larger frictional coefficient, and maximum contact pressure, while the increase in the initial contact angle has an opposite effect on these parameters. This article considers the experiences of a Samoan female geographer undertaking community‐based field research in her home country, and identifies some lessons for researchers working in similar circumstances. The paper suggests that ethical behaviour in research is 'place‐specific', and there is therefore a need to employ culturally sensitive and 'location‐specific' methodologies when undertaking community‐based research fieldwork. For the lead researcher, growing up in Samoa played a significant role in gaining an understanding of a set of robust and effective procedures to evaluate citizens' resilience to climatic and other environmental challenges. Fluency in everyday and more formal local languages, and awareness of local differences, each with multi‐layered connections to local communities, understanding cultural nuances and practising respect for va tapuia [sacred space or relationships] protocols, together facilitated the process of knowledge acquisition and helped to confirm the validity of the conclusions derived from the study. This paper investigates the effect of participation in global value chains (GVCs) on firms' efficiency and explores heterogeneity in this impact across different firms, according to GVC governance, positioning in the chain and time length of participation. Our analysis takes advantage of survey data providing information on involvement in GVCs for a large set of Italian industrial SMEs between 2008 and 2012. We employ Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to retrieve a measure of firms' technical efficiency (i.e., DEA efficiency scores) and estimate the impact of involvement in GVCs on firms' efficiency through propensity‐score matching techniques and truncated regression. Our results show that participation in GVCs induces significant efficiency premia, especially for suppliers, with stronger effects in the case of relational modes of participation. The accuracy of equivalent dipole arrays for source modeling of electromagnetic fields is affected by several factors. In the step for extracting equivalent dipole arrays for a given source, there are three factors that can affect accuracy: scanning height, source spacing, and scanning gap. In the evaluation step of reconstructed fields, there are two other factors that can also affect accuracy: evaluation height and additional structures. In this paper, simple guidelines are suggested considering the three factors in extracting equivalent dipole arrays. Also, the effects of the evaluation height on accuracy of reconstructed fields are demonstrated in the presence of shielding or dielectric structures. The design of new uranyl‐ligands (uranyl‐Ls) is of great significance for the separation and utilization of uranium. In this paper, the triazole group was introduced into uranyl‐salophen (uranyl‐S) to form new asymmetric uranyl‐unilateral benzotriazole salophen (uranyl‐UBS); we further replaced two oxygen atoms of uranyl‐UBS with two sulfur atoms to generate uranyl‐unilateral benzotriazole thio‐salophen (uranyl‐UBTS) as a new receptor. Then, we comprehensively explored coordination models of uranyl‐UBS and uranyl‐UBTS with R/S‐triadimefons (R/S‐TDFs) enantiomers as the guests using density functional theory calculations at the B3LYP//RECP/6‐311G** level; we then investigated enantioselectivity recognition of the new receptors to the guests R/S‐TDFs. The results indicated that the uranium atoms of the receptors uranyl‐S, uranyl‐UBS and uranyl‐UBTS could coordinate with the carbonyl oxygens in guests R/S‐TDFs to form complexes of guest‐receptors R/S‐TDFs‐uranyl‐Ls that exhibited two stable V‐shaped structures with quite different properties. It was found that the coordination ability to the guests R/S‐TDFs is uranyl‐UBTS > uranyl‐UBS > uranyl‐S, while the enantioselectivity for the guests is uranyl‐UBTS > uranyl‐S > uranyl‐UBS and, when the receptor is the same, R‐TDF has stronger coordination ability than S‐TDF. These results provide information and theoretical supports for the experiments of asymmetric uranyl‐UBS with R/S‐TDFs, and produce a reference for further exploring the coordination characteristics of asymmetric uranyl‐salophen with the triazole derivatives. This paper numerically investigates the compressive mechanical properties of the perforated hollow spheres structures with different geometrical and physical properties. In these structures, the metallic hollow spheres are perforated regularly with several holes, which open the inner sphere volume and surface and are bonded in simple cubic, body‐centered cubic and face‐centred cubic patterns. The 5×5 cells finite element models under uniaxial compression are established by ABAQUS 6.14 software for simulation. The influence of the spheres' spatial pattern, as well as base materials for the spheres and bonding necks on the structural mechanical properties are evaluated. By changing the wall thickness, hole diameter and bonding radius in the body‐centered cubic packing finite element model, the elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio and initial yield stress are calculated and discussed as functions of these geometrical parameters and their average densities. This paper explores the productivity of international hotels by considering the number of guest rooms and the area of the catering department as quasifixed inputs, because neither can be easily changed over a short period. We introduce a range‐adjusted measure model to incorporate both quasifixed inputs and negative outputs and propose a nonradial Malmquist productivity index to estimate dynamic productivity. The results show that chain‐operated hotels were unable to generate operational synergy to enhance their competitiveness, but their productivity outperformed that of independently operated hotels in cross‐period aspect. Summary: In this paper, polyacrylonitrile‐based graphite felt (GF), carbon felt (CF) and the effect of thermal activation on them with or without the catalyst (BiCl3) are comprehensively investigated for iron‐chromium redox flow battery (ICRFB) application. The physical‐chemical parameters of GF and CF after the thermal activation is affected significantly by their graphitization degree, oxygen functional groups, and surface area. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results manifest that GF and CF before and after the thermal activation have different electrocatalytic activities owing to oxygen functional groups number increase and the graphitization degree decrease. In terms of the capacity decay rate, as oxygen functional groups provide shorter electrocatalytic pathways than bismuth ions, the performance of GF and CF after the thermal activation is more ideal. As a result, GF before and after the thermal activation exhibits higher efficiency (EE: 86%) and better stability at a charge‐discharge current density of 60 mA·cm−2 than those of CF during charge‐discharge cycling, as the dominant limitation in an ICRFB is ohmic and activation polarization. Therefore, GF after thermal activation together with the addition of BiCl3 in the electrolyte is a more promising electrode material for ICRFBs application than CF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The lack of syncollisional sediments in the eastern Yarlung Zangbo suture zone (YZSZ) has impeded our understanding of the India‐Asia collision, particularly as to whether the collision was synchronous or diachronous. In this paper, we present evidence for the vestige sedimentary archives of the initial India‐Asia collision retained in the previously proposed "Cretaceous Langxian Mélange" in the eastern YZSZ, southern Tibet. Field investigations of marbles and intercalated meta‐siliciclastic rocks, together with analyses of petrography, cathodoluminescence image, geochronology, trace elements, and Nd isotopes show that (1) marbles occur as thin‐bedded to massive individual layers consistently dipping to the south at 50–80°, (2) marble and intercalated meta‐siliciclastic rocks exhibit the same deformational (foliations S0 and S1) and metamorphic (green‐schist facies) history with nearly same detrital‐zircon age spectra and εNd(0) values, (3) protoliths of the meta‐sedimentary rocks were sourced from both India and Asia and deposited during the early Eocene, and (4) protoliths of the marbles were probably precipitated in a marine environment. These lines of evidence suggest that the previously proposed mélange is indeed not the Cretaceous mélange, but the vestige of syncollisional sedimentary strata that was originally deposited in situ in a syncollisional foreland basin. The estimated collisional age of prior to ~56 Ma in the eastern YZSZ is almost consistent with the 60–56 Ma age estimated from the western‐central YZSZ and Himalaya, indicating a (quasi‐) synchronous initial India‐Asia collision at ~60–56 Ma. The problem of unmeasured parameters estimation for distributed control systems is studied in this paper. The Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy model which can appropriate any nonlinear systems is employed, and based on the model, an observer-based fuzzy H∞ filter which has robustness against time-delay, external noise, and system uncertainties is designed. The sufficient condition for the existence of the desired filter is derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) solutions. Moreover, the underdetermined estimation problem in which the number of sensors available is typically less than the number of state variables to be estimated is specifically addressed. A systematic method is proposed to produce a model tuning parameter vector of appropriate dimension for the estimation of the filter, and the optimal transformation matrix is selected via iterative solution to minimize the estimated error. This research paper as an article investigates electrochemical performance of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-co-HFP) flexible nanocomposite polymer electrolytes which have been prepared successfully with incorporation of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofiller. First, nanofillers are incorporated in a polymer matrix to form the flexible nanocomposite PVdF-co-HFP polymer membranes (PI-CMPM), and it is obtained by phase inversion technique. Contact angles of PI-CMPM have achieved a maximum of 136°. After this procedure, it has been activated by using a 1.0 M LiClO4 containing of DMC/EC (1 : 1 v / v ratio) electrolyte solution to get flexible nanocomposite polymer electrolytes (PI-CMPE). The optimized PI-CMPM has increased the electrolyte uptake by 150%. It reaches the maximum ionic conductivity value of 2.47 × 10 − 3 S cm−1 at room temperature. Optimized PI-CMPE achieved a maximum transference number of 0.61, which may be further evidence for the ability to fabricate high-performance lithium ion polymer batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cold recycling technology is a widely applied asphalt pavement rehabilitation technology. The properties of emulsified asphalt residues after water evaporates play an important role in the performance of the asphalt pavement. This paper investigates the rheological and fatigue properties of emulsified asphalt residues under different evaporation methods. Two different matrix asphalt binders and emulsifiers were selected to prepare the emulsified asphalt. Moreover, the direct heating method (DHM) and the EN13074 and ASTM D7497-09 evaporation methods were used to obtain emulsified asphalt residues. Furthermore, the linear viscoelasticity, the permanent deformation resistance, and the fatigue resistance were evaluated by the temperature sweep and frequency sweep tests, the multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) test, and the linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test, respectively. The test results show that under the three evaporation conditions, the growth amplitude order of the rutting factor, recovery percent, complex modulus, and fatigue life of emulsified asphalt residues is ASTM D7497-09 > EN13074 > DHM, and as is the attenuation amplitude order of the nonrecoverable creep compliance and phase angle. The results reveal that the evaporation process leads to oxidation and hardening of the residues. The hardening degree of the ASTM D7497-09 evaporation method is higher than that of the EN13074 evaporation method, and the hardening degree of the EN13074 evaporation method is higher than that of the direct heating method. The rheological and fatigue performances of the emulsified asphalt residues depend on the matrix asphalt. Moreover, the residue that was prepared from 70# asphalt has good high-temperature and fatigue properties, but it has higher temperature sensitivity and stress sensitivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first is to numerically investigate and reveal the effect of polymer viscoelasticity on the retraction of a deformed drop using the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method and polymer kinetic theory. More importantly, the second is to propose a novel method to evaluate the interfacial tension between polymer melts based on the numerical study. Compared with the conventional deformed drop retraction method (DDRM), the present method is designed to greatly reduce the impact of polymer viscoelasticity on measuring interfacial tension. Summary: Many researchers have focused on liquid‐cooled devices with simple structure and high efficiency, which promoted the gradual development of the mini‐channel liquid‐cooled plate battery thermal management system (BTMS), due to the advancement of liquid cooling technology. This paper has proposed an electrochemical‐thermal coupling model to numerically predict the thermal behavior of the battery pack in different parameters of mini‐channel cold plates and optimize the parameter combinations. The effects of cooling plate width, mini‐channel interval, and inlet mass flow rate on the heat dissipation performance of the system were analyzed at a constant C‐rate to provide a reliable experimental basis for the optimization model. Results indicate that increasing the cold plate width and the inlet mass flow rate reduce the temperature and temperature gradients. In addition, the minimum temperature difference is obtained at the mini‐channel interval of 6 mm. The optimum cooling plate width (90 mm), mini‐channel interval (4 mm), and inlet mass flow rate (80 g/s) are determined using the orthogonal test, analysis of variance, and comprehensive analysis of multi‐index results. The addition of an auxiliary cooling system based on the optimized combination further reduces the maximum temperature and temperature difference of the battery pack by 4.9% and 9.2%, respectively. The developed strategy and methods can further improve the performance of the BTMS and provide a reference for the development of a compact battery pack at high discharge rates for engineering applications. This paper presents an investigation into the effect of rock physical parameters on water phase trapping (WPT) damage in tight gas reservoirs. The investigation involved water imbibition and drainage experiments that were performed to simulate the WPT formation process. Gas permeability was measured before and after WPT, and an empirical formula was used to determine water film thickness in order to examine the influence of WPT on effective gas flow channel. Results showed that the average water saturation of 15 tight core samples increased from 19.41% to 44.76% during water imbibition and declined to 38.72% after drainage. Increments in water saturation caused a degree of damage to gas permeability in the 36.03%‐78.10% range with an average value of 59.31%. Comparative analysis showed that the dominant factors affecting WPT were average pore throat radius followed by rock permeability and porosity. Meanwhile, calculations showed that water film thickness in the 21.22‐38.18 nm range correlated to a reduced effective gas flow channel of 20.20‐45.15 nm caused by WPT, which suggests that tight rocks with smaller pore throats may be particularly sensitive to WPT damage. The relative size of the water film filling the pore throat, trapping gas, and reducing the effective gas flow channel together with the size of the pore throat itself were found to be the most common damage mechanisms of WPT and have proven to be fundamentally beneficial in understanding the controlling factors of these damage mechanisms. Mass fatalities can present the forensic anthropologist and forensic pathologist with a different set of challenges to those presented by a single fatality. To date radiography has played an important role in the disaster victim identification (DVI) process. The aim of this paper is to highlight the benefits of applying computed tomography (CT) technology to the DVI process. The paper begins by reviewing the extent to which sophisticated imaging techniques, specifically CT, have been increasingly used to assist in the analysis of deceased individuals. A small scale case study is then presented which describes aspects of the DVI process following a recent Australian aviation disaster involving two individuals. Having grided the scene of the disaster, a total of 41 bags of heavily disrupted human remains were collected. A postmortem examination was subsequently undertaken. Analysis of the CT images of all body parts ( n = 162) made it possible not only to identify and side differentially preserved skeletal elements which were anatomically unrecognizable in the heavily disrupted body masses, but also to observe and record useful identifying features such as surgical implants. In this case the role of the forensic anthropologist and CT technology were paramount in facilitating a quick identification, and subsequently, an effective and timely reconciliation, of body parts. Solvent evaporation caused by aging from ballpoint inks was measured by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS). The sample preparation was carried out with two different thermal desorption systems. The results are compared. Thirteen inks were classified with regard to their solvents, polymers, and additives. The variation of the aforementioned compounds caused by aging was monitored for naturally and artificially aged samples. In this paper, an upper bound of the Gini index, based on grouped data, is proposed assuming that there is no information on all the group mean incomes as well as the overall mean income but the limits of the income brackets are known. An important advantage of this proposal is that conventional formulas for the upper bound of the Gini index could be applied directly by substituting the (unknown) mean income for each income bracket with the corresponding value that maximizes the grouping correction for that income bracket. The paper presents some aspects of analysing the reliability of machines when the recognized states of a machine form the base for conclusions about the further effectiveness of its functioning. In the first part the problem of states and classes of states is introduced, as well as the classic approach to the problem of machine reliability. The next part of the paper shows briefly the methodology of identifying the states of functioning machines by means of diagnostic methods. Special attention is paid to the domain of time in diagnostic investigations. The idea of representing the changes of states by time series of diagnostic symptoms has been presented and illustrated by some examples. Roadway stability in extremely soft coal mass is a typical challenge in deep underground mines, as the most widely adopted support structure such as rock bolting, compound support system normally fails. This paper proposed a novel prereinforcement method for coal roadway, that is, jet grouting (JG) technique, to improve the quality of surrounding soft coal mass and form a stable support structure namely jet grouted coalcrete. The field and laboratory tests were conducted for evaluating the applicability of JG and the mechanical parameters of coalcrete. A numerical model was verified by comparing the calculated results with field measurements. According to the confirmed model, three typical JG support schemes were performed to assess the roadway stability after JG. The results showed that the proposed JG schemes can reduce the deformation and failure zone of the roadway and optimize the stress states around the roadway. The mechanism related to these advantages was investigated. The relative humidity is an important parameter reflecting the performance of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, which is often accompanied by changes in heat and temperature. In order to study the different humidification effects on the performance of PEM fuel cells, a temperature and heat transfer (T&HT) model is presented. The innovation of this paper is to study the performance of fuel cell (FC) from the perspective of temperature heat transfer by asymmetric humidification. Firstly, symmetrical humidification experiments are performed at three operating temperatures. After that, a three‐dimensional (3D) structure is built using fluent and T&HT model is imported through custom functions. Secondly, the asymmetric humidification experiment is put into practice with 60 °C operating temperature. Furthermore, the Taguchi method is used to optimize the performance of fuel cells in the crossover experiment. Finally, the experimental and numerical results are compared by the contours and polarization curves. The results show that T&HT model is in agreement with the experiment, and asymmetric humidification is more reasonable and flexible than symmetrical humidification. When the cathode relative humidity is 50% and the anode relative humidity is 75%, the maximum optimization rate of system efficiency is 17%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has been noticed during recent years from reservoirs that are at the end of their life plateau or in which production has been declined. Two of these EOR methods are as follows: carbonated water and smart water injection. In carbonated water injection method, CO2‐contained water is injected in reservoirs in order to decrease free CO2 injection mobility, increase water viscosity, and store/remove produced greenhouse CO2 gas safely, and in smart water injection method, the ions in brine are modified in order to make controlled reactions with distributed ions on the surface of rock to cause more hydrocarbon recovery. In this paper, the combination of these two methods is investigated as hybrid smart carbonated water injection to find out the recovery factor change and effective mechanisms. Experimental core flooding setup is used for investigation of hybrid EOR injection applicability and mechanisms. Probable mechanisms are measured using different cores and five water samples are used for preparing carbonated water (at pressure of 2500 psi) including sea water (34 261 ppm), river water (1329 ppm), one of Iranian reservoir formation water (FW) (163 711 ppm), 10 times diluted FW (0.1 FW), and 100 times diluted FW (0.01 FW). The effect of both brine content and volume of CO2 is determined during hybrid EOR assessment. The main mechanisms activated including pH variation, oil swelling, oil viscosity reduction, ion concentration variation in brine and porous media, and wettability alteration have been investigated. Hybrid method resulted in highest recovery (70%) mainly due to ion exchange, wettability alteration, oil swelling, and permeability enhancement. In addition, type of salt concentration will affect recovery as 0.01 FW results in 8% and 16% additional oil recovery compared to sea and river waters, respectively. In this paper, the results of the numerical parametric study are presented, in which the M‐V interaction behaviour of box‐girder bridge deck specimens was investigated. For this study, an advanced numerical model was used, previously calibrated against the experimental results. Based on the numerical results and the existent rules for the trapezoidal box‐girders, new design models were proposed for the prediction of the bending and shear resistance of cross‐sections with the curved bottom flange. Additionally, the force‐based M‐V interaction equation proposed by Jáger et al. Performing a digital forensic investigation (DFI) requires a standardized and formalized process. There is currently neither an international standard nor does a global, harmonized DFI process (DFIP) exist. The authors studied existing state-of-the-art DFIP models and concluded that there are significant disparities pertaining to the number of processes, the scope, the hierarchical levels, and concepts applied. This paper proposes a comprehensive model that harmonizes existing models. An effort was made to incorporate all types of processes proposed by the existing models, including those aimed at achieving digital forensic readiness. The authors introduce a novel class of processes called concurrent processes. This is a novel contribution that should, together with the rest of the model, enable more efficient and effective DFI, while ensuring admissibility of digital evidence. "Speed Words" uses an analogy between the psychomotive force of the dialectic field and the electromotive force of the magnetic field to formulate a conjecture which might be the subject of investigation. Using the term, "meaning time," which is explained, the paper introduces the time dimension as a function of word value. Accepted laws of an electric system are used to suggest parallel laws for the dialectic system. As a result, understanding speed of words is expressed by an equation WS = MT × WF, where WS is the relative speed of a word in terms of its understandability, MT is the meaning time in years of word use, and WF is the word frequency per million words used by a stated audience. Experimental use of this equation and method suggests that there may be as much meaning in a few dozen stable words, of greater meaning age than numbers, as there is in a few dozen digits in the decimal system - used as the basis of science and mathematics. This could lead to revealing an even more basic or universal language. If these points can be stressed, speed words are then only part of a larger concept. There could be a field of thought above, and yet related, to known physical fields. If such a field is postulated and searched for its analogical equivalents, language could, in a mean sense, become the thought field constant, the relationship of ideas, field units; time, the field denominator.
