ABSTRACT Background Methods Findings Conclusions This paper was written by researchers with and without intellectual disability working in two Australian universities. Each university has an inclusive programme. The co‐researchers were former students of these programmes. The reason for this study was to find out what people in these two programmes did while they were at university, what they liked and disliked about their experience and what they have been doing since they finished university.Researchers recorded conversations about university experiences with 10 current and former students of the two programmes and five participants' family members. From this, the students' ‘journey’ to, through and after university was co‐written by a pair of researchers with and without lived experience. These stories were reviewed by a team of people with lived experience. In this paper, five journeys are presented as well as a summary of what was reported across all 10 stories.The study found that participants had a positive experience at university and developed self‐confidence. They enjoyed learning and having choices in their learning. Some students reported feeling included, meeting new people, having good relationships with mentors and having positive involvement with university clubs. Others reported difficulties making friends, feeling unaccepted or not fully included in all parts of university life. Some programme graduates went on to paid employment or other learning. Not all students felt supported with the move to other opportunities after university.This study highlights the importance of including people with intellectual disability as researchers and advisors in studies about people with intellectual disability. The study also shows more needs to be done within these programmes to help students develop genuine relationships at university beyond the programmes. ABSTRACT Background Methods Findings Conclusions Individuals with intellectual disabilities often require various supports in their everyday lives. Many access both acute and intellectual disability services depending on their needs. Previous research has highlighted suboptimal experiences of care provided in acute services. Joint working between both services has been recognised as a measure of improving healthcare for this group. Although there is some evidence regarding this issue from the perspective of acute service providers, further research is required to understand the perspective of intellectual disability service providers.Ten nurses working in various roles in intellectual disability services across Ireland took part in semistructured interviews. The data were analysed using thematic analysis.Issues with inter‐service communication and insufficient policies, protocols and pathways were found to negatively impact joint working. Acute services seemed to have a limited understanding of the role and capacity of intellectual disability services. Acute services do not always identify the individual needs of the people in their care. Despite this, there were examples of joint working taking place that benefited those with intellectual disabilities.Joint working needs to include improving communication between both services, co‐developing policies, protocols and pathways and appointing acute care liaison nurses. Background Methods Findings Conclusions The study focuses on the need to optimise assessment scales for support needs in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Current scales are often lengthy and redundant, leading to exhaustion and response burden. The goal is to use machine learning techniques, specifically item‐reduction methods and selection algorithms, to develop shorter and more efficient scales.A data set of 93 participants was analysed using the Supports Needs Scale. Five feature‐selection algorithms were evaluated to create a shortened questionnaire. For each algorithm, a Random Forest model was trained, and performance was assessed using metrics like accuracy, precision, recall and F1‐score to measure how well each model predicted support needs.The "Select from Model" algorithm successfully identified key items that could predict the level of Support Needs using the Random Forest model. Only 51 variables, out of the original 147, were needed to maintain predictive accuracy. The reduced questionnaire maintained good reliability and internal consistency compared to the original instrument, with a strong F1 score indicating excellent predictive performance.The study demonstrates that machine learning techniques are effective in reducing the length of support needs questionnaires while preserving their psychometric properties. These methods can help institutions provide more efficient access to information about support needs without compromising validity or reliability, potentially leading to better resource allocation and improved care for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Background: Active Support is a staff practice that aims to increase engagement of people with intellectual disabilities. This study seeks to: (1) identify the outcomes of staff using Active Support and how these are measured; (2) identify how the views of people with intellectual disabilities have been included in Active Support research. Method: A scoping review was conducted of peer‐reviewed articles about Active Support published between 2009 and 2023. Results: Sixteen articles were identified. Outcomes included engagement, the quality of staff support, choice and challenging behaviour. Structured observations were the most frequently used measurement method. Only two studies explored people with intellectual disabilities' perspectives about Active Support. Conclusions: Consistent use of similar measures is a strength of Active Support research. Including perspectives of people with intellectual disabilities may provide insight into dimensions of support not been measured and assist in further developing these measures and Active Support practice. Background: People with intellectual disabilities commonly experience multiple barriers to 'going out'. Aims: This paper explores what barriers prevented people from going out, and if the extent and nature of going out changed over time for people with intellectual disabilities as the COVID‐19 pandemic progressed. Methods: Data are drawn from a wider study that explored, at four time points, the experiences of people with intellectual disabilities through the COVID‐19 pandemic in the United Kingdom. Findings: The number of people leaving the house for almost all reasons increased over time through the pandemic, except for some outdoor participation and exercise. However, there was a significant decrease in outdoor exercise at the final time point of the study. Reliance on other people and a lack of availability of support were identified as barriers. Background: There is established evidence of complicated grief among people with an intellectual disability. This paper describes the process of adapting complicated grief therapy (CGT) for this population. Method: Action research documented the adaptation of CGT. Qualitative methods included analysing meeting notes, reflective interviews with two members of the team involved in adapting the materials, and interviews with six professionals working in disability settings who reviewed the adapted materials. Results: Key processes included adapting the standardised tools that form part of CGT and developing adapted approaches to abstract concepts related to death, dying and bereavement. Key therapeutic components such as imaginal revisiting and the role of significant others required adaptation for implementation with people with intellectual disabilities. Conclusion: The importance of adapting evidence‐based therapies for people with intellectual disabilities is emphasised. Background: People with intellectual disabilities remain disadvantaged in many aspects of everyday life. Capability approach is an underused approach in social care research and has at its core the importance of having capabilities or opportunities to do what we value. We use this approach to explore how people with intellectual disabilities can be supported to lead flourishing lives. Methods: Interviews and focus groups were conducted with 50 people with intellectual disabilities and 28 family carers. Data were analysed using an adapted template approach and conceptual analysis. Results: Our analysis led to the identification of one overarching theme; 'Doing what you love and growing' and sub‐themes; 'Choice, opportunity and empowerment', 'Being out in the world' and 'Lowered expectations and static lives'. Conclusion: People with intellectual disabilities can lead capability‐deprived lives. Introduction: Easy Read health documents prepared for people with intellectual disabilities are often generated from Standard Texts. Language in Easy Read versions is typically assumed to be simpler. However, simplification of language may have unintended consequences. This study aimed to explore the differences in language used between Easy Read health material and the Standard Text versions of the same material produced for the general population. Methods: Five Easy Read/Standard Text pairs were sampled and analysed using Systemic Functional Linguistics. This addressed: how people with intellectual disabilities and others were represented by language, the author stance in relation to the reader and the overall organisation of the text. Results: The Easy Read versions often used language that was less empowering and inclusive. Background: Talking therapy for people with intellectual disabilities is often specifically adapted. One adaptation is the involvement of significant others in therapy, however, there is no systematic description of the use of this adaptation in routine clinical practice. Method: An online survey of UK psychologists regarding the inclusion of significant others in individual therapy with people with intellectual disabilities. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Ninety‐five psychologists who work with people with intellectual disabilities provided responses to questions regarding the decision to include significant others in therapy, factors that make including significant others more or less likely and how the role of significant others is explained to them. Conclusions: Psychologists consider a range of factors in deciding the involvement of significant others. We discuss implications for training of therapists working with people with intellectual disabilities, issues of consent and how the roles of significant others are understood. Background: Research suggests that people with intellectual disabilities have a higher risk for cardiovascular disease than the general population. The aim of this study was to identify barriers for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular disease for people with intellectual disabilities. Method: We conducted individual interviews with relatives and general practitioners and focus group interviews with staff working at an assisted home facility, a cardiac ward, an obesity clinic and two rehabilitation centres (n = 33) in Norway. Inductive approach and thematic analysis were used to analyse the data. Results: We identified barriers on an individual and a structural level. The underlying reason for these barriers is that health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, are regularly overlooked as the condition of intellectual disability overshadows other possible diagnoses. Conclusion: This focus on intellectual disability rather than other explanations leads to shortcomings in the prevention, diagnoses, and treatment of cardiovascular disease in this group. Introduction: There is growing recognition that healthcare inequalities faced by people with intellectual disabilities extend to their experiences at the end of life, resulting in calls for more inclusive research to help address these inequities. Our study aimed to address this through the co‐design of a toolkit for supporting end‐of‐life care planning with people with intellectual disabilities. To inform the co‐design process, we undertook an evidence review to identify existing tools, resources and approaches that were already being used in practice. Methods: Our evidence review comprised three components: (i) a rapid scoping review of the academic literature, (ii) a desk‐based search of the grey literature and (iii) an online survey to capture unpublished resources that were distributed to services, professionals, third‐sector organisations and family members. A longlist of existing materials was appraised using an adapted version of the AGREE II instrument, resulting in a shortlist that was shared with the co‐design team. Results: The evidence review played a critical role in the co‐design of a new toolkit of end‐of‐life care resources for people with intellectual disabilities. However, AGREE II proved to be limited for our purposes. Conclusions: The survey was particularly useful in helping us identify resources, tools and approaches in current use. We identified evidence review processes that served to support co‐design team activities and elements that were more problematic. We argue that evidence review practices might be enhanced to better aid co‐design activities in health and care research, particularly for studies involving people with intellectual disabilities. People with intellectual disabilities were deeply involved at every stage of project design, delivery and dissemination. The project employed people with intellectual disabilities as members of the core research team. The evidence review process itself was led by academic members of the research team with contributions from colleagues with intellectual disabilities via the Advisory Group and core research team. Background: People with intellectual disabilities are more likely to be prescribed psychotropic medication than the general population and are frequently prescribed multiple medications. Understanding people with intellectual disabilities and carer perspectives is essential to improving the quality of psychotropic medication prescribing and usage. Method: A rapid review explored people with intellectual disabilities' understanding of psychotropic medications, as well as family members and paid carers, and how this understanding can be improved. Results: Twenty‐one journal articles were included. Lack of understanding of medication was universal, with participants often unaware of adverse effects, alternatives, and rights around medication. There was also a lack of involvement in decision making for all participants. Some interventions aimed at people with intellectual disabilities or paid carers helped to improve knowledge. Conclusion: Evaluating how best to improve psychotropic medication understanding for people with intellectual disabilities, family members and paid carers should be a focus for future research. Background: People with intellectual disabilities are rarely involved in research on quality of life. The study sought to answer the question: what do people with intellectual disabilities believe improves or hinders their quality of life? Method: Using an inclusive, accessible research design, 18 participants met in small groups to answer the study's question using their choice of arts‐based media. Participants completed the analysis collaboratively, identifying key themes among their responses. Results: The participants concluded that supports, well‐being, hobbies, and activities contribute to quality of life. Lack of accessibility, assumptions, negative behaviours, stress, and negative people (staff, roommates, people in general) were identified as detractors of quality of life. Conclusions: To continue to make progress in improving the quality of life of individuals with intellectual disabilities, the voice of those with intellectual disabilities is key. The value of experts by experience within the field of intellectual disabilities is receiving greater recognition. This study explored the experiences of peer trainers regarding the impact of being a (1) trainee in a train the trainer course (n = 9), and (2) peer trainer in a Dutch training course (n = 6) aimed towards the self‐growth of people with intellectual disabilities. In addition to examining the experiences of peer trainers themselves, we investigated the perspective of coaches (n = 4) regarding the experiences of peer trainers. Peer trainers and coaches were questioned using individual and group interviews. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Three themes were identified: (1) Growing and flourishing, (2) Performing a meaningful role for your peer and (3) Experiencing reciprocity and a sense of belonging. Working as a peer trainer was valuable and produced several benefits, ranging from increased self‐confidence to feelings of belonging and reciprocity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

People with intellectual disabilities (ID) experience complex medical care needs and high levels of multimorbidity. In mainstream healthcare, these needs might remain undetected leading to unmanaged health problems and avoidable deaths. In the Netherlands, general practitioners (GPs) can refer to specialized ID physicians when ID‐specific expertise is required. Little is known about the characteristics of specialized medical care for people with ID. This study explores the characteristics of specialized medical care for people with ID, including the interplay between medical‐, psychological‐, and context‐related problems. A retrospective cohort study using medical records of patients with ID who had visited the outpatient ID practice in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Medical records (n = 128) were analyzed using descriptive statistics, focusing on (1) reasons for initial consultation, (2) health‐related problems identified during initial consultation, and (3) disciplines involved following initial consultation. Analyses were performed separately for patients who were referred by a medical professional and patients who visited the practice for proactive health checks related to the etiological diagnosis. Patients often initially visit the outpatient ID practice for one type of complaint, most often psychological. Diverse, multiple, and interconnected problems were identified during specialized medical ID consultation. A range of specialist professionals (n = 25) were involved by the ID physician. The health‐related problems of people with ID seen at the outpatient ID practice are diverse and interconnected, and originate from an interplay between medical‐, psychological‐, and context‐related problems. This complexity is not mirrored in the reasons for referring to the outpatient ID practice. It is essential to go beyond medical views and assess health complaints in an integrated way, including the way ID can influence all levels (physical, mental, contextual) of the experienced health issue within the context of everyday life. Background: Implementation issues often hinder reaching the potential of care technology to improve daily lives of people with intellectual disabilities. We investigated barriers to and facilitators of implementing different technology modalities (app/social robot/sensor/domotics) in long‐term care. Method: Care professionals (N = 83) from 12 Dutch disability care organisations completed a customised measurement instrument for determinants of innovations (MIDI) questionnaire. Results: Out of 27 determinants, 20 were identified as facilitators and 16 as barriers. We highlight common barriers: few colleagues who work with the technology; no (awareness of) formal ratification of technology use; no arrangements regarding turnover of staff using the technology; unsettling organisational changes; technological defects and limited IT preconditions. Conclusions: The results, which could be combined and compared across study sites, provide insight into which implementation determinants were already well addressed, and where there is ground to gain when implementing care technology in disability care organisations. This paper presents current information on policy developments, service design, best practices, and approaches to empower the users of health and medical care services for people with intellectual disabilities in Poland. Polish regulations allow systemic support to be provided for all people with disabilities. However, Polish patients with intellectual disabilitiy (PwID) and their caregivers face many barriers. Although a key obstacle is the lack of a standard definition that approaches disability in an interdisciplinary way, PwID are also more likely to experience difficulties in personal communication in medical settings and less likely to encounter specialists prepared to work with this group. There is also a need to pay greater attention to the expectations of PwID. To facilitate a holistic approach to diagnosis and therapy, there needs to be coordination between different specialists, including medical staff, paramedics, psychologists, and teachers. Providing personal communication training for medical personnel, as well as developing dedicated procedures for PwID in primary health care, clinics and hospitals, will improve equal access to health and health literacy for all in Poland. ABSTRACT Background/Aims Methods Findings Conclusions/Implications This study explored supporting the social inclusion of adults with intellectual disabilities living in rural areas, by engaging natural supporters (other than family members and paid staff).This qualitative study involved educating and preparing six local connectors—each a member of mainstream volunteering and/or leisure clubs to support six people with intellectual disabilities to join. Qualitative interviews were used to explore the experiences of local connectors.Six clusters of meaning were identifiable from content analysis including the support provided by local connectors, communication/interaction and supports for continued attendance. Rural local connectors had strong local knowledge and connections that facilitated those with disabilities to make local acquaintances.As part of a structured programme, natural supporters can be engaged to support people with intellectual disabilities to become known and make connections in their rural neighbourhoods. Implications for practice include sourcing social roles as close as possible to home for rural dwellers and the importance of flexible transport. The characteristics of local connectors and the club ethos/culture that facilitates social inclusion are identified. Policy recommendations include that local authorities offering funding to local clubs develop guidelines and education for members, with a view to embedding diverse membership as a guiding principle. The present study aims to test a model in which basic psychological needs (BPN) satisfaction in physical‐sport activity contexts is associated with self‐determined motivation, which, in turn, would predict the social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. A total of 286 people with intellectual disabilities (53.5% men) who reported engaging in physical‐sport activities responded to a validated questionnaire about the satisfaction of their BPN, motivation (using the Self‐determination index [SDI]), and social inclusion. A Pearson's bivariate correlation and structural equation modeling were conducted. The resulting model was reanalyzed in a multigroup analysis to test its invariance across self and proxy reports. Positive associations were found between the satisfaction of the BPN and the SDI. However, the SDI and social inclusion were positively associated only in proxy reports (βself = 0.07 vs. βproxy = 0.30). The tested model established positive relationships between the BPN and SDI in autonomy (βself = 0.21 vs. βproxy = 0.18), competence (βself = 0.47 vs. βproxy = 0.53), and relatedness (βself = 0.21 vs. βproxy = 0.23). Further research is needed to understand the factors leading to discrepancies between participants and proxies when relating the SDI to social inclusion in the context of physical‐sport activity. However, the results obtained suggest that it would be optimal to develop contexts of practice for people with intellectual disabilities in which the satisfaction of their BPN is favored and that this has a positive impact on their motivation and social inclusion. Highlights: In the context of physical‐sport activity practice, the satisfaction of basic psychological needs in people with intellectual disabilities seems to be associated with developing more self‐determined motivation, with a strong association found between competence satisfaction and self‐determined motivation.Self‐determination index appears to have a positive relationship with the social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in physical‐sport activity contexts.Discrepancies have been found between the perceptions of people with intellectual disabilities and proxies regarding the terms of this relationship, necessitating research to understand better the factors that may be generating such discrepancies. Background: This study examines the extent of exposure to verbal violence experienced by people with intellectual disabilities and whether it differs based on their housing situation: living in the community, with family, or in a residential facility. Method: One hundred and eighty‐nine people with intellectual disabilities were interviewed about their experience with verbal violence. Results: Eighty‐six percent reported experiencing verbal violence in their lifetime and approximately 77% experienced it the past week. Participants were most likely to be yelled at, and friends were the most common perpetrators. While there were few differences by setting, people living with their families were more likely to be laughed at and marginally more likely to experience rude comments. Conclusions: Verbal violence is prevalent in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities in Israel. Background: In people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorder, oral midazolam (OM) is very effective as premedication for facilitating medical treatment. In this retrospective study, we investigated the optimal dosage of OM for premedication. Methods: Patients with intellectual disability and/or autism spectrum disorder who were given OM as a premedication were selected from anaesthesia records. The primary outcome variable was the dose of OM (mg/kg) required to produce an adequate sedation. Results: The mean OM dose required was 0.32 ± 0.10 mg/kg. The required OM dose decreased significantly as age and weight increased, and age and weight were also shown to be significantly associated with the dose of OM in the multivariate linear regression analysis. Conclusion: The dosage of OM to achieve adequate sedation should decrease as the patient ages. Furthermore, adequate sedation can be achieved with even lower doses of OM in obese people. In this article, we describe the healthcare system for people with intellectual disabilities (ID) in the Netherlands. The general background about healthcare for people with ID is the same worldwide: their health needs are often unrecognized and unmet. We delineate, from a historical perspective, the steps the Netherlands has taken to change the situation for them. The Netherlands crossed a milestone in 2016 when it ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Despite challenges in establishing numbers, an estimated ID prevalence of 1.45% was determined. The Dutch healthcare system has different levels, is funded through six distinct laws, and is complicated. The Netherlands has a spectrum of disability care services that increasingly collaborate in shaping the care of people with ID. People with ID and their representatives are increasingly involved in the process of shaping this care. The general practitioner plays a central role in the Dutch healthcare system, serving as the gatekeeper to medical specialists. Furthermore, the Netherlands recognizes the role of a physician for people with ID as a medical specialization. The core competencies of the ID physician include knowledge of the etiology and consequences of ID and associated health problems. The ID physician also knows how to deal with diagnostic and therapeutic barriers. Key challenges facing ID healthcare in the Netherlands include difficulties supporting people with ID due to the increasing complexity of society, concerns about continuity of care at the transition age (18−/18+), inadequate reach of population screening programs for people with ID, and limited availability of (routine) data for research on the ID population. The Dutch government encourages research in the ID field to overcome these challenges by financially supporting academic collaboratives. Zambia is a low‐income country on the African continent which is facing a high rate of health inequalities. Although the government has made efforts to reform the organization of healthcare to reduce inequalities, the practical implementation of disability policies remains challenging. Specifically, people with intellectual disabilities (ID) face barriers to accessing healthcare services in Zambia, due to geographic or socioeconomic factors, stigma, and limited specialized health professionals. This perspective paper provides an overview of the current policy and organization on the healthcare provision for people with ID. It presents the key challenges people with ID face in Zambia to access quality healthcare services. Additionally, we provide examples of good practices with a community approach. We discuss policy implementation of disability rights, including access to healthcare, the impact of raising knowledge and awareness about people with ID, and how gathering contextual information through research can help to reduce inequalities. Community and culturally sensitive approaches to improve access to healthcare for people with ID in Zambia are crucial. We call for close collaboration between the fields of research and practice to combine expertise and strengthen the impact and possibilities of scaling good practices within Zambia. ABSTRACT Background Methods Results Conclusions Longitudinal studies of family carers of people with intellectual disabilities during the COVID‐19 pandemic have been very rare. This study investigated trajectories of family‐carer wellbeing and the impact of the caring role on carers' health over four time points measured during the COVID‐19 pandemic and after all public health restrictions had been lifted (between December 2020 and late 2022) across the United Kingdom.Family carers of adults with intellectual disabilities participated through a co‐designed, online survey at four time points across the pandemic (2020–2022). Growth models were used to determine the change in family‐carer wellbeing (n = 312) and the impact of the caring role on carers' health across the pandemic and what factors were associated with these outcomes. We explored associations between profound and multiple intellectual disabilities (PMID), the cared‐for person's individual wellbeing, the cared‐for person's age, whether the cared‐for person lived with their family and family‐carer wellbeing and impact of caring trajectories.Overall, family‐carer wellbeing improved, and the impact of the caring role on carers' health reduced across the time period. If the cared‐for person had PMID was associated with greater degrees of depression and stress for caregivers and thus increased the impact of the caring role on carers' health, but it was not associated with carer wellbeing. Similarly, the reduction in individual wellbeing of the cared‐for person and the caregiver's perception of this person's wellbeing was also significantly associated with increased impact of the caring role on carers' health and carer wellbeing. There was no evidence that age of cared‐for person was predictive of either outcome, and there were mixed findings on whether living at home was an associated factor for either outcome.Overall, family‐carer wellbeing improved, and the impact of the caring role on carers' health reduced across the time period, but the cared‐for persons' poorer wellbeing and complex needs (indexed by the presence of PMID) were associated with negative impacts on family carers during the pandemic period. Background: People with intellectual disabilities may experience frailty earlier than the general population. This scoping review aimed to investigate how frailty is defined, assessed, and managed in adults with an intellectual disability; factors associated with frailty; and the potential impact of COVID‐19 on frailty identification and management. Method: Databases were searched from January 2016 to July 2023 for studies that investigated frailty in individuals with intellectual disabilities. Results: Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria. Frailty prevalence varied between 9% and 84%. Greater severity of intellectual disability, presence of Down syndrome, older age, polypharmacy, and group home living were associated with frailty. Multiagency working, trusted relationships and provision of evidence‐based information may all be beneficial in frailty management. Conclusion: Frailty is common for people with intellectual disabilities and is best identified with measures specifically designed for this population. Background: Older people with intellectual disabilities and their families report a lack of support for planning for parental death and transitions in care. This article aims to demonstrate the process of co‐designing resources to support older people with intellectual disabilities and their families to plan for the future. Methods: Following interviews and focus groups with older people with intellectual disabilities and their families, we used an adapted experience‐based co‐design process to develop planning ahead resources. This included a 'trigger film' summarising findings from the earlier interview study, 12 co‐design workshops and a user feedback phase. Results: The co‐design group developed a set of 102 'Planning Ahead Cards' to help families to talk about the future and prepare for meetings with social care professionals. The group made decisions about the content, format and design of resources, and how co‐design workshops would run. The user feedback phase led to changes to the cards, and families and stakeholder groups suggested that they would be useful for planning ahead. Conclusion: The Planning Ahead Cards may facilitate planning for parental death and transitions in care for older people with intellectual disabilities and their families. The co‐design approach was key to ensuring that the resources were useful and accessible for families. People with intellectual disabilities face health disparities, including in high‐income countries such as the United Kingdom, despite publicly funded healthcare. This paper describes the healthcare system in England (a nation of the United Kingdom) for the general population, and more specifically for people with intellectual disabilities. Key legislation that impacts the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, such as the UK Equality Act 2010 (https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/contents), the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2005/9/contents), and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and its implementation in the United Kingdom, is discussed. The role of deinstitutionalization and the shift to living in the community for people with intellectual disabilities is also discussed. Programmes that have been implemented to address the health disparities experienced by people with intellectual disabilities are reviewed. Background: People with intellectual disabilities are less physically active and suffer from ill‐health more than the general population. Support staff play an important role in the person's life. This study aimed to explore the support staff's experiences regarding the feasibility of adapted web‐based exercise for people with intellectual disabilities. Method: Participants with intellectual disabilities living in community‐based settings were recruited for a web‐based exercise study. Eight semi‐structured interviews were carried out with their support staff before and after the intervention period. Results: The main theme, 'Support staff are crucial for feasibility' encompasses the importance of communication, structure, and motivation in improving physical activity for people with intellectual disabilities. Conclusion: The experiences of support staff, indicate that a web‐based exercise program is feasible for the target group, and one way to overcome challenges for PA, where the role of the staff is crucial. Background: Endings in therapy are discussed widely in mainstream literature, however, there is only a small amount of research that considers endings in therapy for people with intellectual disabilities. Methods: Eight therapists were interviewed about their experience of ending therapy with people with intellectual disabilities. Interviews were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Results: Four superordinate themes associated with endings that go well were identified: 'recognising', 'readying', 'reframing' and reflecting', with a fifth theme reflecting endings that were less successful. Participants worked hard to offer transformative experiences of endings and an overarching 'super‐superordinate' theme of 'facilitating transformative endings' encompassed the findings. Conclusions: Endings are a multi‐faceted component of psychological therapy with people with intellectual disabilities and are significant for both client and therapist. ABSTRACT Introduction Methods Findings Conclusions Language can reflect bias: an ‘intellectual’ disability means for many people that you cannot be an academic knowledge producer; a ‘learning’ disability means that your education will be hampered. Like language definitions, academic practices can reflect societal biases. The social (in)justice regarding knowledge and knowledge production is called epistemic injustice, and it has resulted in exclusion of nonconventional knowers, such as persons with intellectual or learning disabilities, from academia and higher education (other than as objects of research).This paper will discuss academic practices through the lens of epistemic (in)justice and look at the potential of inclusive research and educational practices therein. We will briefly describe dominant ways of knowing (e.g., abstract, verbal), and counter these practices in exploring practical, tacit, embodied and affective ways of knowing.For people with intellectual disabilities to be able to gain recognition as ‘real’ knowers within academia, we need to include diverse types of knowing and enable academic practices to be inclusive of people with intellectual disabilities. Inclusive practices can support a paradigm shift away from dominant ways of knowledge production in research and education, by centralising and correctly interpreting alternate knowledge. Experiences of scholars with intellectual disabilities appear to confirm the value of different ways of knowing.Drawing from these experiences, we will discuss the importance of relational autonomy, collectively owned and adaptive knowledge, and the learning context. Background: Self‐determination is associated with lifelong positive outcomes. Students with intellectual disabilities typically have lower self‐determination than their peers. Universal basic education access offers schools the opportunity to rectify this disparity. This is the first systematic review investigating the school‐based practices that target self‐determination development for students with intellectual disabilities. Method: The review follows the PRISMA guidelines, spanning five databases (ProQuest databases, EMBASE, Scopus, Sage Journals, Taylor and Francis Online) from 2006 to 2021. Results: Across the 18 studies, the most used practice is the SDLMI. Research focuses on United States‐based transition‐aged students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. Social validity tends to be assessed in summative and informal ways. Students are not generally involved in decision‐making about practices and individualisation of support. Conclusions: Self‐determination development for this population can begin before puberty. Background: Little is known about how health issues identified at the annual health check (AHC) are followed up and addressed, how participants self‐manage their health in between AHCs, and what support they receive. This research aimed to explore this. Methods: People with intellectual disabilities (n = 12), and/or their supporters residing in Wales, were interviewed following their AHC and again at 6 and 11 months. A recurrent cross‐sectional thematic analysis was undertaken. Results: Five main themes emerged from interview one: going for a health check, issues identified, and actions taken, supporting the self‐management of health, the personal context, and addressing health inequities. Four main themes emerged from follow‐up interviews: follow‐up, supporting the self‐management of health, the need for reasonably adjusted health services, and going for another health check. Background: Research into befriending for people with intellectual disabilities is limited. This study aimed to explore the impact, mechanisms of change, and limitations of a befriending scheme for adults with intellectual disabilities and/or autism. Methods: Participants were recruited using convenience sampling. Thirteen individuals with intellectual disabilities and/or autism were interviewed and data thematically analysed. Results: Four themes were generated: 'Something fun for me'; 'A good connection'; 'Increasing independence'; and 'A life less quiet'. Befriending had direct benefits through the activities undertaken and the befriending relationships themselves being fun and reducing isolation. Befriending facilitated belonging, improved access to mainstream activities, and fostered independence by providing safety and support. The importance of shared interests and external support for the relationship was highlighted. Conclusions: Positive outcomes of befriending were found, supporting existing literature and revealing new information from the voices of participants with intellectual disabilities themselves. Background: To improve the quality of palliative care, six evidence‐based tools were implemented in 10 care services specialised in care for people with intellectual disabilities. Contextual differences were taken into account by using a participatory action research approach. Method: The RE‐AIM framework (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance) structured the evaluation. Data sources were online questionnaires completed by 299 professionals at baseline (response 45.2%) and 250 professionals after 2.5 years (35.1%), 11 semi‐structured group interviews with 43 professionals, field notes and implementation plans. Results: A total of 767 professionals and 43 teams were reached. The effectiveness of the intervention was demonstrated in an improved knowledge of palliative care policy and increased competences among professionals. 79% of the professionals adopted tools in the toolbox. The participatory action research method was perceived as valuable in driving change. Background: We investigated the prevalence of swallowing difficulties and associated factors in people with intellectual disability. Methods: We included people aged 50+ receiving care for people with intellectual disabilities. The Dysphagia Disorder Survey (DDS) was used to assess swallowing difficulties. We determined the agreement between the DDS and swallowing difficulties in medical records. We used logistic regression analyses to explore associated factors. Results: One thousand and fifty people were included. The prevalence of swallowing difficulties was 43.8%. Swallowing difficulties were not reported in the medical records of 83.3% of these cases. Frailty (odds ratio (OR) = 4.22, 95% CI = 2.05–8.71), mobility impairment (OR = 2.50, 95% CI = 1.01–6.19), and mealtime dependency (OR = 3.05, 95% CI = 1.10–8.47) were independently associated with swallowing difficulties. Conclusion: Swallowing difficulties are prevalent in older people with intellectual disability but may be under‐recognised. Background: Studies have found that presence of challenging behaviours and mental health problems limits employment for people with intellectual disabilities. This study investigates the associations between age, gender, living condition, level of intellectual disability, diagnoses, behaviour, mental health, and employment in adults with intellectual disabilities in Norway. Method: A cross‐sectional community‐based survey including 214 adult participants (56% men) with intellectual disabilities. Results: In our sample, 25% had no organised day activity, 27% attended non‐work day care, 19% attended sheltered employment, or day care with production, without pay and 29% worked in paid sheltered employment. One participant attended mainstream employment. Moderate and severe/profound level of intellectual disability, possible organic condition and irritability significantly reduced the odds of employment (paid and unpaid). Conclusion: Findings suggest unequal access to the sheltered employment that was meant to be inclusive. Background: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is a NICE recommended treatment for post‐traumatic stress disorder within the general population. Ongoing research is now investigating the use of EMDR for individuals with intellectual disability. Alongside quantitative research efforts, it is beneficial to explore the qualitative experience of clinicians adopting EMDR in their practice. The current study interviewed newly trained EMDR therapists working in intellectual disability services. Method: Participants (six Clinical Psychologists from an NHS learning disability service) had recently undertaken EMDR training as part of a wider randomised control trial (Trauma‐AID). Interviews were qualitatively analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Three themes emerged; learning EMDR, conducting EMDR and external factors, with respect to clinicians' experiences. Conclusions: Further research is needed to provide guidance and reassurance for clinicians currently using or hoping to use this therapy with people with intellectual disabilities. Background: The study reports the impact of the Covid‐19 pandemic and lockdowns on jobs for people with intellectual disabilities and autism. The study focuses on the impact of the first and the fire‐break lockdowns and the actions taken to support young people. Method: Data was collected from the cohort of young people currently working in Wales, and that received job coach support from the Engage to Change Project, on furlough arrangements, job retainment and job losses. Innovative initiatives to support young people are described. Results: Review of the working situation during the pandemic was conducted for 184 jobs, evaluating the proportion of young people being furloughed or working remotely and compared with the general population in Wales. Conclusions: Supported employment agencies adapted their practice during the COVID‐19 pandemic, offering new and innovative ways to support young people and facilitate their return to work. Background: People with intellectual disabilities are often left out of research on important topics. This exploratory study investigated their views on barriers and facilitators to accessing care at end of life, both at home and in a hospice setting. Method: This qualitative study used reflexive thematic analysis. Two focus groups were held via Zoom with a total of four participants. Results: Three themes were produced: Unsettling Transitions, Maintaining Familiarity, and Respecting People's Wishes. Keeping things as unchanged as possible at end of life was highlighted as an ideal. Respecting people's wishes and education were highlighted as facilitators to good end of life care. Conclusions: The themes identified in this study highlight the fears and wishes of this population with regards to receiving quality end of life care. Background: Increasing numbers of older adults with intellectual disabilities are living with ageing parents. These families need support to plan for the future to avoid crisis interventions following parental death. Method: Interviews and focus groups were conducted with people with intellectual disabilities (aged 40+) (N = 9), parents (N = 11) and siblings (N = 16) to understand their perspectives about living with parents and future planning. Data were analysed using framework analysis. Results: Four themes were identified: 'What matters to me', 'When should we plan', 'What are the options' and 'Who will help'. Participants knew they needed to make plans but did not feel supported to do so. While they viewed moving as an opportunity for independence, they feared there were no viable alternatives. Conclusion: Person‐centred resources and support are needed for families to plan for transitions in care, including proactive approaches from social services and help to prepare for conversations with social care professionals. This article demonstrates the important role family narratives can play in providing ethical, person‐centred support for people with severe intellectual disabilities living in supported accommodation. Focusing on the story of Daniel, a 65‐year‐old man residing in a group home in Australia, I illustrate, through the lens of his mother Arleen, how family narratives foreground those with intellectual disabilities as holders and makers of memories, offering valuable social and narrative contexts for their ethical treatment. I conceptualize family narratives as evolving frameworks that give meaning to the lives of people, both individually and as a group, grounding shared and individual ways of being and understanding through the passage of time. In a time where the disability sector increasingly emphasizes personal autonomy and choice for service users, I argue for an embodied understanding of ethics, of paying the other their due, by attending to the stories that constitute people as relational beings. This is particularly relevant in the context of consumer‐oriented support, which can drive individualizing, one‐size‐fits‐all approaches to a person's ethical treatment. Such narratives have the potential to influence professional practice and promote a more connected approach to person‐centred support that recognizes the embodied and relational dimensions of our lives. Background: A positive conception of sexuality among people with intellectual disabilities is crucial and relies on several social and interpersonal contexts. The goal of this study is to analyse the interaction and impact of three different contextual groups: individuals with intellectual disabilities, their parents, and professionals working with them. Methods: Survey data were collected from 330 people with intellectual disabilities attending occupational centres in eastern Spain, 330 parents, and 100 professionals. Results: Correlation and variance analyses of dyad‐level data show significant differences among the three groups in all variables. Professionals perceived people with intellectual disabilities to have higher knowledge of socio‐sexual norms than people with intellectual disabilities actually appear to be, but they are also more concerned about aspects related to this area of people with intellectual disabilities. Compared to people with intellectual disabilities and professionals, parents perceived people with intellectual disabilities to have lower sexual knowledge. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates inconsistent perceived knowledge of people with intellectual disabilities' socio‐sexual norms and sexual knowledge among the three groups, leading to disparate levels of concern regarding people with intellectual disabilities sexuality. Thus, the need to collect information from different perspectives for more accurate reporting and the critical need for sex education programs that involve the target population, but also parents and professionals who frequently interact with people with intellectual disabilities are highlighted. ABSTRACT Background Method Findings Conclusions Third‐level education is a relatively new opportunity for people with intellectual disabilities. The development of third‐level educational opportunities for this population rests on understanding their experiences and suggestions for programme development and improvement. The aim of this study is to establish how inclusive third‐level education is experienced by people with intellectual disabilities.A scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's framework of peer‐reviewed empirical research published between 2002 and 2023 that reported on the experience of third‐level education for people with intellectual disabilities.People with intellectual disabilities are engaging in third‐level education courses within University Campuses. They consider such programmes as opportunities to meet aspirations and to enable independent living especially through employment. Their experiences are influenced by supportive staff, initiatives and challenges and they have opinions on how to improve third‐level programmes.People with intellectual disabilities value and embrace the opportunities to engage in third‐level education. Their experience is mixed with positive personal outcomes and challenges. Future research is needed to examine effective approaches to overcoming challenges and finding ways to develop programmes that meet the needs of adults with intellectual disabilities. Objectives Methods Results Conclusions We report the effect of quality of therapy delivery on outcomes in a randomized, controlled trial of behavioural activation (BA) and guided self‐help (GSH) for depression in adults with intellectual disabilities.A study specific measure of quality was used in a linear mixed effect model to determine the effects therapy and therapy quality on therapy outcome.There was a significant interaction between quality and treatment type, with lower quality therapy associated with better outcome for GSH but poorer outcome for BA, with little difference in outcomes at higher levels of therapy quality.Factors suggesting high quality in individualized BA may indicate problematic engagement for GSH. Background: In disability studies belonging is emerging as a promising area of study. Inclusive research, based as it is on lived experience perspectives, is likely to provide salient insights into belonging in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. Method: A systematic review utilising four databases and five leading journals in the field of intellectual disabilities was used. Content analysis and a deductive synthesis of the extracted data was undertaken. Results: A high level of confluence was found between the findings of the included studies and key themes of belonging identified in the wider literature. Beyond this, studies utilising inclusive research approaches have contributed novel findings about belonging in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. Conclusions: Inclusive research approaches to belonging may provide innovative and responsive frameworks to support people to develop a sense of being connected and "at home" in themselves and in their communities. The aim of this article is to present explicit and implicit attitudes of occupational therapy (OT) staff towards people with intellectual disabilities. The study was conducted on a group of 77 OT employees. To explore the explicit attitude, the Conditional Respect for Persons with Disabilities Questionnaire (Kurtek, Roczniki Psychologiczne, 2018, 4, 327–344) was used, while to estimate the implicit attitude, the Intellectual Disability Attitudes Implicit Association Test was applied (Kurtek, Roczniki Psychologiczne, 2021, 1, 43–64). At the explicit level, OT staff tended to tolerate negative and overrate positive behaviours of people with intellectual disabilities, which indicates a tendency to favour the individuals. However, the opposite devalorizing tendency was observed at the implicit dimension, which indicates aversive ableism. Although the study confirmed the independence of the two dimensions of the personnel's attitude, relationships were observed between the disclosure of negativity towards antagonistic behaviours of the people with intellectual disabilities and a decrease in the level of their implicit devaluation. This brief report proposes strategies to support qualitative research with people with intellectual disabilities on topics related to death and dying. We prepared a scoping review on methodological approaches used for qualitative research on death and dying involving participants with intellectual disabilities and a study on perceived barriers and facilitators to accessing end of life settings, conducted with co‐researchers on an online video communication platform. Through conducting these two studies, we found three strategies that we believe will increase the uptake of this research for policymakers, funding bodies and other researchers. The strategies concern research agendas, structured methodological guidance, and allocation of funds. When planning out qualitative research projects about death and dying topics, people with intellectual disabilities must be on the research agendas on topics related to death and dying. To realize this obligation, stakeholders would benefit from structured methodological guidance. The design, planning, and conduct of such studies would benefit greatly from such guidance and would ideally result in the uptake of this type of research. Additionally, proper funding taking into account needed but time‐consuming accommodations for participants is necessary. Background: People with intellectual/intellectual and physical disabilities frequently use day‐service centres, an array of services that involve the provision of care and social activities during the daytime and offer homebound people with disabilities opportunities to live in their communities. While nurses working at day‐service centres for people with disabilities are expected to promote service‐users' health, little research has focused on this area. Nurses' relationships with service‐users of day‐service centres have not been sufficiently investigated regarding how their interactions determine service‐users' specific activities and daily lives within such facilities. This study sought to address this research gap. Methods: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study with six nurses working at day‐service centres located in Tohoku region, Japan. Six participants were interviewed 16 times. The psychological‐phenomenological method developed by Amedeo Giorgi was used as the model for data analysis. Findings: The analysis generated five themes. First, nurses show interest in service‐users by 'continuing to show interest' and by 'trying to understand the service‐users from the perspective of what they can do'. Additionally, the nurses ensure that service‐users enjoy their time in the facility by 'supporting enjoyment through nursing and medical care', 'stabilising feelings' and 'creating an environment conducive to everyone's comfort'. Conclusions: Nurses working at day‐service centres for people with intellectual/intellectual and physical disabilities provide support for social participation while maintaining the service‐users' mental and physical health. Thus, these nurses support enjoyment among service‐users from the nursing and medical care aspect; they also devise ways for service‐users to interact and adjust to the environment to improve service‐users' comfort at day‐service centres. Furthermore, participation in daytime activities at day‐service centres indicated that nurses are interested in service‐users' activities, and they perceive service‐users as positive individuals. Accessible summary: This study shows how nurses working at day‐service centres for people with disabilities in Japan understand their approach and engage with service‐users.Nurses working at day‐service centres understood the service‐users and focused on what they were good at and what they were able to do. Based on this understanding, the nurses use specialised knowledge to ensure that service‐users can enjoy their time at the day‐service centres, while providing approaches for mental and physical stability and support for daytime activities.Nurses attempt to make service‐users feel comfortable at day‐service centres to encourage them to continue visiting the centres.This study is relevant to people with disabilities, as it contributes to future nursing care direction for this population from the perspective of nurses' professional experiences. Background: There is limited understanding of the context surrounding physical activity (PA) of young people with intellectual disabilities (ID), which has an impact on the development of PA promotion programmes. Peer social connectedness seems to be a vital correlate to focus on, but has not been included in current studies examining the correlates and determinants of PA levels of young people with ID. This study aims to synthesise the evidence on (1) the social constructs researchers have used to conceptualise peer social connectedness in a PA context among young people with ID, (2) the measurement tools that have been used and (3) the relationship between PA and peer social connectedness in young people with ID. Methods: The review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses guidelines. Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, Web of Science, ERIC, CINAHL and PsycINFO were searched from 1 January 1996 up to, and including, July 2023 to identify English‐language studies, which examined associations between PA and peer social connectedness in adolescents and young adults (13–24 years) with ID. Study quality was assessed using the Standard Quality Assessment Criteria for Evaluating Primary Research Papers from a Variety of Fields. Results: Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Ten peer social connectedness constructs and 18 measurement instruments were identified. Studies were predominantly focused on Special Olympics participants and unified activity formats. Participation in PA can increase social connectedness, but there is a lack of studies examining whether PA can also be increased by focusing on peer social connectedness in young people with ID. Conclusions: Results show that peer social connectedness is recognised as relevant to researchers developing and testing PA programmes for young people with ID. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
