Abstract Flood risks are increasing in Europe, and the EU Floods Directive is one of the main efforts to implement and harmonize effective flood risk governance and management among member states. At the same time, the ongoing shift from mere flood protection to multi‐functional flood risk governance calls for increased collaboration among a diversity of actors, typically with varying interests and responsibilities. In this study, we analyze the actor networks unfolding from flood risk management plans to visualize the diversity of roles and connections between actors participating in flood risk management measures. We introduce a new framework for analyzing flood risk management plans and related actor networks using Social Network Analysis and test it in the context of Finland. The framework helps to visualize the diversity of networks for different flood risk management strategies. The analysis also reveals the central roles that different types of actors—including those outside the public sector—occupy in the network. The findings suggest that Social Network Analysis can be used in the context of EU flood risk governance and that flood risk management plans offer an excellent opportunity for comparative governance studies in the EU.

Abstract Several modeling tools commonly used for supporting flood risk assessment and management are highly effective in representing physical phenomena, but provide a rather limited understanding of the multiple implications that flood risk and flood risk reduction measures have on highly complex systems such as urban areas. In fact, most of the available modeling tools do not fully account for this complexity—and related uncertainty—which heavily affects the interconnections between urban systems evolution and flood risk, ultimately resulting in an ineffective flood risk management. The present research proposes an innovative methodological framework to support decision‐makers involved in an urban regeneration process at a planning/strategic level, accounting for the multi‐dimensional implications of flood risk and of different flood risk management strategies. The adopted approach is based on the use of System Thinking principles and participatory System Dynamics modeling techniques, and pursues an integration between scientific and stakeholder knowledge. Reference is made to one of the case studies of the CUSSH and CAMELLIA projects, namely Thamesmead (London), a formerly inhospitable marshland currently undergoing a process of urban regeneration, and perceived as being increasingly vulnerable to flooding. It represents an interesting opportunity for building a replicable modeling approach to integrate urban development dynamics with flood risk, ultimately supporting policy and decision‐makers in identifying mitigation/prevention measures and understanding how they could help achieve multi‐dimensional benefits (e.g., environmental, social and economic).

Abstract This study investigates the relationship between Building Information Modeling (BIM) and knowledge management in large‐scale construction projects, emphasizing risk management, and increasing productivity. This study aims to identify the most important and impactful aspects of modern management techniques in the large‐scale construction sector to improve construction quality; focusing on cost reduction, energy conservation, and pollution reduction during construction. Employing a validated questionnaire from experts and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), the research prioritizes key factors, elucidating the pivotal role of BIM in understanding project geometry, efficient documentation, design flexibility, and reduced project delays. Ascertained through data analysis employing the pairwise comparisons method of the AHP analysis method, the compatibility of all comparisons and matrices arising from the decision‐making process of experts was below 0.1. The results establish BIM's technical capabilities, economic considerations, and pollution reduction as paramount, contributing significantly to improve large‐scale construction project risk management. The prioritization of the main criteria reveals their significance in the following order: BIM technical capabilities (0.281), BIM economic capabilities (0.231), pollution reduction (0.228), knowledge management capabilities (0.096), BIM time capabilities (0.090), and human resources management capabilities (0.074). BIM can improve risk management for large‐scale construction projects by: using the BIM model to understand the geometry and features of large‐scale construction projects; digitizing and organizing contract documents, project data, plans, work instructions, roles and responsibilities, cost, time, and energy analysis, and other project‐related documents for efficient project management; decreased duplication and project delays; reducing the need for on‐site personnel during implementation and CO2 emissions reduction. According to the results of the BIM model utilization to better understand the geometry and characteristics of large‐scale construction projects, the item was identified as the most significant and influential among the main components.

Abstract Flood risk management faces challenging decisions to balance between reducing disastrous flood consequences and different societal goals such as development. The inherent complexity and limited data often lead to significant uncertainties in decision‐making, potentially resulting in suboptimal resource allocation. Consequently, there may be value in aiming to reduce uncertainty, minimizing the possibility of selecting deemed efficient decisions because of deficiencies in the current knowledge. To address this, a novel methodology is proposed, integrating Bayesian uncertainty with value of information concepts, commonly employed in healthcare economics. This methodology assesses the implications of current uncertainty and identifies worthwhile sources for resolution prior making decisions. Validation in a synthetic case study and application in a real case (Zapayan wetland in the Magdalena River, Colombia) demonstrate the method's efficacy. Results show that the proposed method can help apprising if the available information is enough to make a decision, or if more information should be obtained. For example, for the synthetic case, resolving the sources of uncertainty with extra information does not significantly improve the expected utility, so a decision could be made based on existing information. For the real case, reducing the uncertainty related to the exposed assets should be targeted first, by an information gathering activity, before deciding.

Abstract Extreme flooding events are becoming more frequent and costly, and impacts have been concentrated in cities where exposure and vulnerability are both heightened. To manage risks, governments, the private sector, and households now rely on flood hazard data from national‐scale models that lack accuracy in urban areas due to unresolved drainage processes and infrastructure. Here we assess the uncertainties of First Street Foundation (FSF) flood hazard data, available across the U.S., using a new model (PRIMo‐Drain) that resolves drainage infrastructure and fine resolution drainage dynamics. Using the case of Los Angeles, California, we find that FSF and PRIMo‐Drain estimates of population and property value exposed to 1%‐ and 5%‐annual‐chance hazards diverge at finer scales of governance, for example, by 4‐ to 18‐fold at the municipal scale. FSF and PRIMo‐Drain data often predict opposite patterns of exposure inequality across social groups (e.g., Black, White, Disadvantaged). Further, at the county scale, we compute a Model Agreement Index of only 24%—a ∼1 in 4 chance of models agreeing upon which properties are at risk. Collectively, these differences point to limited capacity of FSF data to confidently assess which municipalities, social groups, and individual properties are at risk of flooding within urban areas. These results caution that national‐scale model data at present may misinform urban flood risk strategies and lead to maladaptation, underscoring the importance of refined and validated urban models.

Aim: This study aimed to explore the utility of latent profile analysis of illness perception, in comparison to treating illness perception as several dimensions, to predict breast cancer-related lymphedema risk management behaviours among Chinese breast cancer patients., Methods: This is a 3-month longitudinal study. From August 2019 to January 2021, patients who recently underwent breast cancer surgery including axillary lymphadenectomy were recruited. Illness perception and risk management behaviours were measured by breast cancer-related lymphedema specific questionnaires before discharge following surgery (n = 268) and at 3 months postsurgery (n = 213), respectively., Results: Treating illness perception as several dimensions, 'illness coherence' and 'timeline (cyclical)' dimensions were found to be significantly associated with breast cancer-related lymphedema risk management behaviours. Using the latent profile analysis, two illness perception profiles were identified and significant differences were revealed in breast cancer-related lymphedema risk management behaviours between them. Overall, illness perception profiles explained smaller amounts of variability in breast cancer-related lymphedema risk management behaviours than illness perception dimensions., Conclusion: Future studies could combine these two different perspectives of illness perception regarding breast cancer-related lymphedema into the design of interventions to improve breast cancer-related lymphedema risk management behaviours., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.)

Abstract Objectives In this narrative review, we aim to present two cases of transperineal drainage of prostate abscesses with a good clinical outcome. Furthermore, we reviewed the literature on this treatment approach and aim to propose a minimally invasive protocol for managing this rare condition. Patients and Methods Our patients are 33‐ and 61‐year‐old males who both underwent uncomplicated transperineal drainage of prostate abscess with the use of a Precision Point device with rapid clinical improvement and complete resolution of the abscess within the follow‐up period. We used PubMed to conduct a literature search and included and evaluated 16 relevant case reports and case series in which the authors utilized transperineal drainage techniques for prostatic abscesses. Results Our first patient was young and very unwell with sepsis and a pulmonary embolism. He had a complex abscess extending through the prostate to the left pelvic side wall. Trans‐gluteal drainage of the pelvic side‐wall collection was required in addition to transperineal drainage of the prostate abscess. After drainage and a prolonged course of antibiotics, he achieved resolution of the abscess by 7 weeks with ejaculatory function intact. Our second patient who was very keen on the preservation of ejaculatory function had multiple small abscesses and underwent transperineal drainage. He had significant interval improvement of his abscess burden at the 4‐week follow‐up and complete resolution at the 6‐month follow‐up. The total number of cases in the literature on our review is 22, with considerable variability in how the authors managed the prostate abscesses that underwent transperineal drainage, including variability in their follow‐up time frame, choice of imaging modality, duration of antibiotic treatment, drain placement, and use of irrigation solutions (including antibiotics) into the abscess cavity. Furthermore, the sizes of the prostate abscesses were not consistently reported. Given the small sample size and variability in management from different authors, it was not possible to draw any statistical analysis. Conclusion Transperineal prostate abscess drainage combined with prolonged antibiotic therapy provides a less invasive alternative to treating prostate abscesses for those who which to preserve ejaculatory function and avoid the other adverse events of transurethral de‐roofing. In itself, it can achieve complete resolution of abscess. It provides the benefit of drainage under real‐time imaging; for percutaneous drain placement; prevents urethral injury; retrograde ejaculation; and can be done under local anaesthetic which is preferable for the unstable patient. The utility of the procedure may be limited by the complexity of the abscess or whether it has extended beyond the prostate. The patient should always be informed that further drainage via percutaneous methods or transurethral methods may be necessary if their clinical condition does not improve. We recommend this procedure be offered as an alternative to transurethral methods in younger patients and those who would like to preserve ejaculatory function. Furthermore, we highly encourage a prolonged course of antibiotic therapy and interval follow‐up with clinical review of symptoms and imaging to confirm resolution.

Abstract The distribution of transmission lines is complex, influenced by terrain and topography, making their maintenance and management challenging. With the advancement of global mechanization, various types of construction machinery and large‐scale mechanical equipment are continually increasing. Accidental contact of construction machinery near transmission lines poses a serious threat to the stability of the power system. Traditional drones and inspection robots face difficulties in achieving real‐time monitoring of construction machinery and equipment around transmission lines, quickly identifying potential risks. Conventional image processing techniques and convolutional neural networks struggle with effective handling of small targets and densely packed detection tasks involving multiple targets. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an intelligent detection algorithm Swin Transformer attention efficient algorithm‐you only look once (YOLO) (STAE‐YOLO). It is based on the Swin Transformer global self‐attention mechanism, cross‐channel fusion attention mechanism, enhanced small object detection framework, and a focused and efficient regression loss function. The experimental results show that the STAE‐YOLO algorithm model improved by 6.3% in mean average precision, 3.7% in precision, and 3.1% in recall compared to the baseline model. Meanwhile, deploying the window multi‐head self‐attention global self‐attention mechanism in the model can strengthen the global multi‐scale semantic information in detection.

Abstract Recently, post‐marketing safety measures have been considered critical in Japan due to the globalization of drug development and the introduction of new drug approval systems. Pharmacists are expected to play an active role in ensuring the safety of drugs post‐approval. Utilizing risk management plans (RMPs) to ensure safety throughout the development and post‐marketing phases is becoming even more critical. In this study, we examine the relationship between the safety specifications (SSs) in RMPs at the time of drug approval and the adverse reactions (ARs) added to the clinically significant adverse reactions (CSARs) section of the package inserts (PIs) post‐approval to determine whether SSs constitute useful drug information for pharmacists. The analysis included new active ingredient‐containing drugs approved in Japan from FY2013 to 2019. A 2 × 2 contingency table was created and analyzed using odds ratios (ORs) and Fisher's exact test. Abstract Background Genetic testing can identify cancer risk early, enabling prevention and early detection. We describe use of risk management interventions following genetic testing in the Cancer Health Assessment Reaching Many (CHARM) study. CHARM assessed risk and provided genetic testing to low income, low literacy, and other underserved populations that historically face barriers to accessing cancer genetic services. Methods CHARM was implemented in Kaiser Permanente Northwest (KPNW) and Denver Health (DH) between 2018 and 2020. We identified post‐testing screening (mammography, breast MRI, colonoscopy) and surgical (mastectomy, oophorectomy) procedures using electronic health records. We examined utilization in participants who did and did not receive actionable risk management recommendations from study genetic counselors following national guidelines. Results CHARM participants were followed for an average of 15.4 months (range: 0.4–27.8 months) after results disclosure. Less than 2% (11/680) received actionable risk management recommendations (i.e., could be completed in the initial years following testing) based on their test result. Among those who received actionable recommendations, risk management utilization was moderate (54.5%, 6/11 completed any procedure) and varied by procedure (mammogram: 0/3; MRI: 2/4; colonoscopy: 4/5; mastectomy: 1/5; oophorectomy: 0/3). Cancer screening and surgery procedures were rare in participants without actionable recommendations. Conclusion Though the number of participants who received actionable risk management recommendations was small, our results suggest that implementing CHARM's risk assessment and testing model increased access to evidence‐based genetic services and provided opportunities for patients to engage in recommended preventive care, without encouraging risk management overuse.

Abstract Increasing climate change risks in Africa, emerging from global warming and their interaction with non‐climate risks such as market, have increased the need for comprehensive Climate Risk Management (CRM) that considers both climatic and non‐climatic risks and enables actions that address the underlying drivers of vulnerability to these risks. However, comprehensive CRM requires holistic Climate Information Services (CIS), that is, CIS that balances between components focused on provision of short‐ and long‐term climate information for both local and non‐local decision makers. In this article, we ask: to what extent is CIS in Africa holistic? We review recent and ongoing CIS interventions in Africa to determine whether a balance of components between short‐ and long‐term CIS for local and non‐local decision makers is achieved for holistic CIS. We find a focus on provision of short‐term, that is, Sub‐Seasonal‐to‐Seasonal (S2S) CIS for local and non‐local decision makers, with limited focus on medium‐ to long‐term (MLT) CIS, particularly MLT CIS for local decision makers which represents the biggest gap to achieving holistic CIS in Africa. We present a supported case that ensuring holistic CIS in Africa will require a portfolio‐based approach to CIS development, particularly focusing on MLT CIS for local decision makers. We further highlight the need for integration of this MLT CIS for local decision makers into existing CIS. Achieving this will require: (a) experimentation and innovation with different CIS formats, products and timeframes to enable learning and flexibility to achieve desired goals; (b) capacity development of producers and consumers of climate information to ensure that they have the skills and expertise to understand and generate, and articulate needs and consume MLT CIS respectively; and (c) coordinated allocation of financial resources to ensure that all components of the holistic CIS are advanced.

Abstract Projections of nonstationary climate risks can vary considerably from one source to another, posing considerable communication and decision‐analytical challenges. One such challenge is how to present trade‐offs under deep uncertainty in a salient and interpretable manner. Some common approaches include analyzing a small subset of projections or treating all considered projections as equally likely. These approaches can underestimate risks, hide deep uncertainties, and are mostly silent on which assumptions drive decision‐relevant outcomes. Here we introduce and demonstrate a transparent Bayesian framework for synthesizing deep uncertainties to inform climate risk management. The first step of this workflow is to generate an ensemble of simulations representing possible futures and analyze them through standard exploratory modeling techniques. Next, a small set of probability distributions representing subjective beliefs about the likelihood of possible futures is used to weight the scenarios. Finally, these weights are used to compute and characterize trade‐offs, conduct robustness checks, and reveal implicit assumptions. We demonstrate the framework through a didactic case study analyzing how high to elevate a house to manage coastal flood risks.

Abstract Perennial bioenergy crops are a key tool in decarbonizing global energy systems, but to ensure the efficient use of land resources, it is essential that yields and crop longevity are maximized. Remedial shallow surface tillage is being explored in commercial Miscanthus plantations as an approach to reinvigorate older crops and to rectify poor establishment, improving yields. There are posited links, however, between tillage and losses in soil carbon (C) via increased ecosystem C fluxes to the atmosphere. As Miscanthus is utilized as an energy crop, changes in field C fluxes need to be assessed as part of the C balance of the crop. Here, for the first time, we quantify the C impacts of remedial tillage at a mature commercial Miscanthus plantation in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. Net ecosystem C production based on eddy covariance flux observations and exported yield totalled 12.16 Mg C ha−1 over the 4.6 year period after tillage, showing the site functioned as a net sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). There was no indication of negative tillage induced impacts on soil C stocks, with no difference 3 years post tillage in the surface (0–30 cm) or deep (0–70 cm) soil C stocks between the tilled Miscanthus field and an adjacent paired untilled Miscanthus field. Comparison to historic samples showed surface soil C stocks increased by 11.16 ± 3.91 Mg C ha−1 between pre (October 2011) and post tillage sampling (November 2016). Within the period of the study, however, the tillage did not result in the increased yields necessary to “pay back” the tillage induced yield loss. Rather the crop was effectively re‐established, with progressive yield increases over the study period, mirroring expectations of newly planted sites. The overall impacts of remedial tillage will depend therefore, on the longer‐term impacts on crop longevity and yields.

Abstract Conflicting interests in flood risk management (FRM) frequently arise, resulting in disputes which are often resolved through mutual agreement. Nevertheless, a small number of cases require legal intervention when negotiation or mediation fails. This can publicly reveal the conflict often hidden in these mutual agreements. The two areas that intersect to create this conflict are spatial planning and flood risk reduction strategies that may impact property rights. This research explores the nature of such conflict in FRM and its possible resolution. Through an analysis of 25 all‐UK legal Court transcripts, we investigate the underlying flood‐related disputation, dispute types, and how they were resolved. Our findings reveal that certain disputes remain unresolved prior to Court proceedings due to misunderstandings about spatial planning in at‐risk areas. In addition, the depiction and the accuracy of flood risk assessments can be a contentious issue. Some FRM disputes remain irresolvable due to the differences in collective and individual aspirations about the use of land by various interests: developers, local authorities, residents, landowners, and farmers. Understanding these FRM disputes and their judicial resolution is valuable in unambiguously revealing who are the ultimate ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ in these fiercely contested struggles.

Abstract The construction of flooding and flood risk management are complex and there is potential for dissonance between individual and institutional understanding and experience of both. In this article, we start by investigating how flooding is managed and the change in paradigm from flood defence to more adaptive approaches, which embed resilience into flood risk management. Using analysis of semi‐structured interviews with members of the flood authorities in England, we explore how flood management authorities construct ‘flooding’ and establish that it is often defined by in‐the‐moment impacts. Whilst these in‐the‐moment impacts are understood to be devastating, there is less appreciation of long‐term human impacts of living at risk of flooding. We uncover how the construction of ‘flood risk management’ by the flood authorities is complicated by factors, such as the construction of resilience, availability of funding, technical expertise and responsibility fragmentation that the Floods and Water Management Act (2010) has created. We conclude that the differing constructions of flooding and flood risk management between flood management authorities in England hinder how flooding is managed. Therefore, we propose that a more nuanced understanding of flooding and flood risk management is essential for effective partnership working between flood risk management authorities and communities.

Abstract The collection and use of data on climate change and its impacts are crucial for effective climate adaptation and climate risk management. The revolution in internet access, technology and costs has led to a shift from using traditional paper‐based data collection to the use of Mobile Data Collection using Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) such as smartphones and tablets. In this paper, we report our experiences using both approaches for a household and business survey during a climate adaptation study in two Nigerian cities—Makurdi and Calabar. The focus of this paper is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of using traditional paper‐based data collection and PDAs as data collection tools for climate change study in African societies. In Calabar, data were collected using paper questionnaires, while in Makurdi the questionnaires were developed on Open Data Kit (ODK) and administered using PDAs. Results show that data collection using PDA was faster, cheaper, more accurate and resulted in fewer omissions than paper‐based data collection. There was a time saving of four (4) minutes per questionnaire and a 24% cost saving when using PDA. PDA provides additional benefits where platforms can collect images, videos and coordinates. This significantly improved the credibility of the data collection process and provided further data that allowed for the mapping of environmental phenomena by linking survey research with geo‐referenced data in a geographic information systems platform to provide spatial representations of social and environmental system convergence. PDA offers a tool for collecting data that will make necessary socio‐environmental data available in a faster, reliable and cheaper manner; future research can build on this study by discovering other possible but less highlighted benefits of PDA. Although, with great benefits, there are lessons to be learnt and issues to consider when deploying PDA in large‐scale household surveys.

Abstract A wide range of nature‐based solutions for flood hazard management work by storing and slowing flow within catchments, and therefore, there is a need to identify the optimal locations for implementing these solutions. This paper presents a relative scoring‐based mapping of the likely locations that contribute to the flood peak. Targeting flow reduction and attenuating mitigation actions in these locations can be an effective way to reduce flood damages at impact points downstream. The presented tool, SCIMAP‐Flood, uses information on land cover, hydrological connectivity, flood generating rainfall patterns and hydrological travel time distributions to impacted communities to find the potential source areas of flood waters. The importance of each location in the catchment is weighted based on its contribution to the flood hazard at each of the downstream impact points. In the example application, SCIMAP‐Flood is applied at a 5‐m grid resolution for the River Eden catchment, Cumbria, England, to provide sub‐field scale information at the landscape extent. Therefore, the tool can identify sub‐catchments where more detailed work can test different mitigation measures.

Abstract The normative dimensions of flood harm in flood risk management (FRM) have become salient in a milieu of extreme flood events. In this article, two types of flood harm will be discussed. They are namely, risk harm and outcome harm. Whilst risk harm suggests that risk imposition by structural FRM measures is a type of harm that can increase vulnerability and diminish well‐being, outcome harm is manifested in deliberate flooding used to protect certain privileged communities at the expense of harming other less privileged ones. Risk‐imposing parties are required to seek consent for imposing new risks. In contrast, outcome harm as deliberate flooding is far more pernicious and should only be exercised in extreme situations with ample provisions for restitution and recovery. The aim of this article is to foreground and examine these under‐explored notions of flood harm in the FRM discourse and in tandem, to expand the normative dimensions of FRM in a milieu where difficult ethical choices abound.

Abstract The study of flood management has experienced a paradigmatic shift over the past two decades. Particularly notable are the embracement of flood risk management (FRM) and comparative analysis of flood risk governance (FRG), meaning the complex institutional arrangements that shape the behavior of state and societal actors concerning FRM. Thousands of publications have addressed these themes, and this field of study is ripe for a systematic analysis that consolidates and structures this rapidly evolving literature. This study employed a bibliometric methodology to analyze the metadata (including authorship, keywords, abstracts, and citations) of 3059 such publications. The results reveal that both FRM and FRG scholarship have expanded over the past two decades; the United Kingdom and the Netherlands are the most prominent countries of origin, a small number of prolific authors stands out as major contributors, and a relatively small number of journals dominate as publication venues. The text mining results reveal that the bodies of FRM and FRG scholarship are highly correlated but yet differ in core subject matter, as demonstrated by the unique keywords found in the analysis. The findings are useful for researchers seeking relevant clusters for study and therefore offers reference value for future research and practice.

Abstract Flood risk managers face increasing challenges in anticipating future developments and coordinating flood risk management on a regional level. The regional floodplain evaluation matrix (RegioFEM), a method to support a future‐oriented flood risk management at a regional scale, was applied in a section of the Raab River in Austria. The developed method uses several parameters assessing the consequences of changes in the study area, which lead to changes in flood risk. Settlement development, planned flood protection measures and the likely increase of flood runoff due to climatic changes are considered. Parameters include hydrological (e.g., peak reduction), hydraulic (inundation area), spatial (affected buildings) and monetary (damage potential) ones. The results of the application of the RegioFEM were presented at a regional expert workshop, conducted to gain feedback about the possibilities and limitations of implementing the method into practice. Considering future changes and evaluating their impacts on flood risk can provide stakeholders and decision makers valuable information for sustainable flood risk management.

Abstract Responsibility for flood risk management (FRM) is increasingly being devolved to a wider set of stakeholders, and effective participation by multiple FRM agencies and communities at risk calls for engagement approaches that supplement and make the best possible use of hydrologic and hydraulic flood modelling. Stakeholder engagement must strike a considered balance between participation ideals and the pragmatic realities of existing mechanisms for FRM decision‐making. This article evaluates the potential for using participatory modelling to facilitate engagement and co‐production of knowledge by FRM modellers, practitioners and other stakeholders. Participatory modelling offers an approach that is flexible and versatile, yet sufficiently structured that it can support meaningful representation of scientific, empirical and local knowledges in producing outcomes that can readily be integrated into existing procedures for shared decision‐making. This article frames the qualities of participatory modelling useful to FRM, as being accessible, transparent, adaptable, evaluative and holistic. These qualities are used as criteria with which to assess the practical utility of three popular participatory techniques: Bayesian networks, system dynamics and fuzzy cognitive mapping. Case studies are used to illustrate how each technique might benefit FRM options appraisal and decision‐making. While each technique has potential, none is ideal, and local contexts will guide selection of which technique is best suited to deliver effective stakeholder participation.

Abstract Flood risk management (FRM) aims to integrate necessary technical measures with environmental and societal approaches. Focusing on the process and governance of how to plan, implement, and maintain solutions therefore becomes essential. Among the different stakeholders, landowners are a key group to be considered. This contribution elaborates on the interconnections between land policy, FRM and private land ownership. It is based on the European COST Action network LAND4FLOOD, which brings together academics and stakeholders from various disciplines and more than 35 countries. We argue for a less project oriented and more process oriented approach, a focus on land management and more emphasis on small‐scale measures. This represents a break with some of the recent working paradigms of FRM.

Objective: Nowadays, due to globalisation, the likelihood that infectious diseases spread rapidly is extraordinarily high. SARS and COVID-19 are two diseases of the Coronavirus family, which developed in China and then spread internationally, causing global public health emergencies. This study investigates the role that risk management and communication systems played in mitigating these emergencies, to establish how they should be improved in the future., Methods: A narrative review was carried out to investigate different knowledge domains, such as risk management and communication, risk assessment and indicators, epidemiological and clinical data, diagnostic methods, vaccines, public health and social measures., Results: On one side, risk management systems assess the main data, knowledge, and indicators on epidemiology, diagnostics, and vaccines (science-based); on the other side, they apply public health and social measures (socially-based). Decision-makers, in fact, implement their actions by constantly balancing these two sides (policy-based)., Conclusions: A correct crisis management approach should support the governance of pandemics, by harmonising the actual risks assessed by experts with those perceived by the general population. It should incorporate not only the biological, but even the environmental, social and economic aspects of virus emergencies, towards establishing a suitable framework to deal with possible future pandemics., (© 2022 The Authors. Abstract Aims/Introduction Hypertriglyceridemia is common in patients with diabetes. Although the fatty acid (FA) composition of triglycerides (TGs) is suggested to be related to the pathology of diabetes and its complications, changes in the fatty acid composition caused by diabetes treatment remain unclear. This study aimed to identify short‐term changes in the fatty acid composition of plasma triglycerides after diabetes treatment. Materials and Methods This study was a sub‐analysis of a prospective observational study of patients with type 2 diabetes aged between 20 and 75 years who were hospitalized to improve glycemic control (n = 31). A lipidomic analysis of plasma samples on the 2nd and 16th hospital days was conducted by supercritical fluid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Results In total, 104 types of triglycerides with different compositions were identified. Most of them tended to decrease after treatment. In particular, triglycerides with a lower carbon number and fewer double bonds showed a relatively larger reduction. The inclusion of FA 14:0 (myristic acid), as a constituent of triglyceride, was significantly associated with a more than 50%, and statistically significant, reduction (odds ratio 39.0; P

Background: Lack of harmonization in pharmacovigilance (PV) practice in resource-limited states in Africa has led to differentiation and marginalization, thus creating an environment where weak or absent PV systems may benefit from regional guidelines., Purpose: To compare the PV guidelines of Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states to international guidelines and identify areas for improvement for aligning PV practice within the SADC region., Methods: We utilized a 73-item checklist to assess the PV guidelines of the SADC member states. Checklist parameters were rated using binary scoring., Results: Only seven (Botswana, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) of the 16 SADC member states had guidelines to assess. Of these, only four had supporting legislation. All seven national medicines regulatory authorities (NMRA)'s guidelines required reporting of local serious adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Four NMRAs implemented device vigilance; none specified submission timelines for ADRs associated with substandard or falsified medicines. Only three NMRAs required electronic transmission of individual case safety reports in the E2B format. Five NMRAs mandated safety monitoring during interventional clinical trials. Five NMRAs required aggregate reporting through periodic safety update reports. Only two NMRAs required submission of the development safety update report. Regarding risk management, four NMRAs required notification of actions taken by foreign NMRAs and four NMRAs expected to review Dear Healthcare Professional Letters before distribution by the marketing authorization holder., Conclusions: Areas for improvement of guidelines to establish common process standards and allow for synchronized submissions of comparable data to SADC NMRAs are provided., (© 2024 North-West University.
