Background Toll‐like receptor (TLR)‐7‐associated rhinovirus (RV) activation is involved in the pathogenesis of asthma. Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are the main interferon‐α‐producing cells against viruses. Objective To determine whether asthmatic patients and control subjects differ in terms of interferon‐α expression in pDCs under TLR‐7 or RV stimulation. Methods pDCs were identified in BDCA‐2+ and HLA‐DR+ peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Interferon‐α expression of pDCs was analyzed after TLR‐7 stimulation with or without interleukin 4 (IL‐4)/IL‐13 pretreatment. Interferon‐α expression was also analyzed after RV stimulation over periods of 24, 48, or 96 h with or without IL‐4 pretreatment. RV detection and molecular typing were assayed from throat swabs. Results Following TLR‐7 stimulation, the expression of intracellular interferon‐α was higher in the pDCs of normal subjects than those of asthmatic patients; however, pretreatment with IL‐4 was shown to reduce this effect. After 48‐ and 96‐h RV stimulation, we observed a notable increase in the production of interferon‐α of pDCs in normal subjects but not in asthmatic patients. Baseline interferon‐α expression in pDCs and the incidence of asthma exacerbation to emergency was higher among the 13% of patients identified as rhinovirus+ than among their RV counterparts. Conclusion Our study discovered the response to TLR‐7 stimulation in pDCs was compromised and the sustainability of interferon‐α expression to RV stimulation was reduced in pDCs of asthmatic patients, which provide further evidence of defective innate response and subspeciality to RV infection in asthma. The high exacerbation history founded in RV+ patients agrees with these findings. In this paper, we discuss the necessity of quantifying and correcting seasonal 3D effects on 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data measured along the embankments of rivers or artificial canals. A permanent ERT monitoring system has been continuously operating along the levee of an irrigation canal in Mantua province, Italy, since September 2015. To evaluate the importance of 3D effects and their dependence on seasonal variations, we first performed numerical simulations and also laboratory tests on downscaled levees of the study site. The results showed that 2D apparent resistivity pseudosections measured along the levee are significantly affected by 3D effects of the embankment geometry. Moreover, it was observed that 3D effects not only depend on the levee geometry, but they are also affected by seasonal fluctuations in the water level in the canal. This proved the importance of calculating 3D effects for the study site during dry and irrigation periods. Therefore, different synthetic models based on the levee geometry and water level in the canal in each period were constructed in RES2DMOD and RES3DMODx64 to quantify 3D effects for the study site. The ratios of apparent resistivity values calculated in RES3DMODx64 to the values calculated in RES2DMOD showed that 3D effects approach a maximum of 30% when the canal is empty during winter, and they arrive at a maximum of 10% when the canal is filled with water in summer. Using the graphs of the modelled 3D effects as a function of electrode spacing, apparent resistivity pseudosections measured by the permanent ERT system are corrected for 3D effects to obtain reliable resistivity sections after inversion. The final resistivity maps can be then converted into water content images using the empirical and site‐dependent relationship developed from core samples in the study area. Water content maps can be used to evaluate the stability of the levee and to detect possible seepage zones.

The aims of this study were to determine which cognitive control functions are most sensitive to cross‐sectional age differences and to identify neural features in different neuroimaging modalities that associated cognitive control function across the adult lifespan. We employed a joint independent component analysis (jICA) approach to obtain common networks among three different brain‐imaging modalities (i.e., structural MRI, resting‐state functional MRI, and diffusion tensor imaging) in relation to the cognitive control function. We differentiated three distinct cognitive constructs: one common (across inhibition, shifting, and updating) and two specific (shifting, updating) factors. These common/specific constructs were transformed from three original performance indexes: (a) stop‐signal reaction time, (b) switch‐cost, and (c) performance sensitivity collected from 156 individuals aged 20 to 78 years old. The current results show that the cross‐sectional age difference is associated with a wide spread of brain degeneration that is not limited to the frontal region. Crucially, these findings suggest there are some common and distinct joined multimodal components that correlate with the psychological constructs of common and discrete cognitive control functions, respectively. To support current findings, other fusion ICA models were also analyzed including, parallel ICA (para‐ICA) and multiset canonical correlation analysis with jICA (mCCA + jICA). Dynamic interactions among these brain features across different brain modalities could serve as possible developmental mechanisms associated with these age effects.

The aim of this study is to improve the anticorrosive property of 7Cu3Zn brass. The methyl-methacrylate (MMA) monomer solution, modified with fluorine radical and silicone, was used as the polymer matrix to mix with the different percentages of modified montmorillonite (MMT) loading and to exfoliate the lamellar structure of MMT on a nanometer scale during the solution polymerization process, and then form a thin nanocomposites coating on brass as a protective layer. The structural characterization was examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The anticorrosive property of nanocomposites was evaluated using potentiodynamics polarization and electrochemical impedance spectra. The results show that the d-spacing of MMT was increased, and both exfoliation and intercalation microstructure were observed. Moreover, with the MMT loading increase, the appearance of the intercalation microstructure was more remarkable as a result of silicate layers aggregation. The 1.0 wt %-coated brass coupons presented the optimistic property of anticorrosion, whose oxygen permeability, corrosion current (icorr), polarization resistance (Rp), and corrosion rate (Rcorr) were 3.5 g/(m2°h), 6.86 nA/cm2, 5.81 × 105 Ω°cm2, and 0.103 × 10−3 mm/year, respectively. 2D electrical resistivity tomography has been applied within a mountain permafrost environment to assist in ice location. In the context of climate change, a warming process could partially thaw this permafrost and thereby increase the risk of slope instabilities. The extent and location of permafrost are therefore of considerable interest to civil engineers. The most challenging aspect of resistivity surveys on mountain permafrost concerns the surface layer, which mainly consists of large blocks with air voids.To overcome the very poor electrical contact, long steel stakes and sponges soaked in salt water are used as electrodes. Nevertheless, only a weak current can be injected. Another challenging aspect is the high resistivity contrast between frozen and unfrozen material, which makes inversion and interpretation difficult and problematic. In order to assess whether features at depth, indicated by the data, are real or are artefacts of the inversion process, a special inversion algorithm was applied to process depth of investigation (DOI) index maps. This method carries out two inversions of the same data set using different values of the reference resistivity. The two inversions give the same resistivity values in areas where the data contain information about the resistivity of the subsurface. On the other hand, the final result depends on the reference resistivity in areas where the data do not constrain the model. As can be deduced from field data from the Swiss Alps and the Jura Mountains, this methodology prevents over-interpretations or misinterpretations of inversion results in mountain permafrost studies. From the DOI calculations, it is evident that little reliable information on the bedrock under the massive ice can be obtained immediately and that the resistivity within the high resistivity zones cannot be determined accurately. The DOI map also helps to explain the occurrence of erratic and non-geological structures at depth and indicates to what depth an inverted resistivity profile can provide results.

The use of optimised resistivity tomography surveys to acquire field data imposes extra constraints on the design strategy beyond maximising the quality of the resulting tomographic image. In this paper, methods are presented to 1) minimise electrode polarisation effects; 2) make efficient use of parallel measurement channels; and 3) incorporate data noise estimates in the optimisation process. 1) A simulated annealing algorithm is used to rearrange the optimised measurement sequences to minimise polarisation errors. The method is developed using random survey designs, and is demonstrated to be effective for use with single and multi-channel optimised surveys. 2) An optimisation algorithm is developed to design surveys by successive addition of multi-channel groups of measurements rather than individual electrode configurations. The multi-channel surveys are shown to produce results nearly as close to optimal as equivalent single channel surveys, while reducing data collection times by an order of magnitude. 3) Random errors in the data are accounted for by weighting the electrode configurations in the optimisation process according to a simple error model incorporating background and voltage-dependent noise. The use of data weighting produces optimised surveys that are more robust in the presence of noise, while maintaining as much of the image resolution of the noise-free designs as possible. All the new methods described in this paper are demonstrated using both synthetic and real data, the latter having been measured on an active landslide using a permanently installed geoelectrical monitoring system.
