Recent research has uncovered many complex cognitive traits and affective processes in many reptile species, such as the ability to make choices that are rewarding or pleasurable. The investigation herein was initiated after many years of anecdotal reports, and preliminary observations, that the two male Aldabran giant tortoises (Aldabrachelys gigantea), Wilbur and Little John, at Melbourne Zoo (Melbourne, Australia) would approach the fence-line of their enclosure, sometimes multiple times daily, to "solicit" interactions from zoo visitors and/or zoo staff. Following other research with Galapagos giant tortoises (Geochelone nigra), this experiment was a novel preference test with two male Aldabran giant tortoises to assess their individual preferences for three stimuli: (1) human interaction (shell and neck rubs provided using hands); (2) food (highly palatable carrot pieces); and (3) an "enrichment" ball (a red "boomer ball"). The results found that Wilbur highly preferred human interaction and food over the ball; whereas Little John preferred food, and showed some initial interest in the ball, but did not approach the human on any of his 13 human interaction trials. These results reflect previous published findings, that human interaction is a preferred "enrichment," but is dependent upon a multitude of other contextual factors, and is not preferred at all times by all individuals. Individual variation may be very important to understand to have greater positive effect on the welfare-related needs of each giant tortoise housed in captivity. Further research is clearly required to enhance the welfare and well-being of many types of zoo-housed reptiles.

OBJECTIVE: Medication adherence is a major challenge in the treatment of older patients; however, they are under‐represented in research. We undertook a systematic review focused on older patients to assess the reasons underlying non‐adherence in this population. METHODS: We searched multiple electronic databases for studies reporting reasons for non‐adherence to medication regimens in patients aged 75 years and over. Our results were not limited to specific diseases, health‐care settings, or geographical locations. The quality of eligible studies was assessed using the Newcastle‐Ottawa Scale. A narrative synthesis of findings was performed. RESULTS: A total of 25 publications were included, all of which were in community settings. Frequent medication review and knowledge regarding the purpose of the medication were positively associated with adherence. Factors associated with poor adherence were multimorbidity, cognitive impairment, complex regimens with multiple prescribing physicians, and problems with drug storage or formulation. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that interventions to improve adherence could focus on medication review aimed at simplifying regimens and educating patients about their treatment. Groups with poor adherence that may benefit most from such a model include patients with multiple comorbidities and cognitive impairment.

Objectives To investigate longitudinal associations between polypharmacy and cognitive and physical capability and to determine whether these associations differ with cumulative exposure to polypharmacy. Design Prospective birth cohort study. Setting England, Scotland, and Wales. Participants An eligible sample of men and women from the Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development with medication data at age 69 (N=2,122, 79%). Measurements Cognitive capability was assessed using a word learning test, visual search speed task, and the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination, Third Edition (ACE‐III). Physical capability was measured using chair rise speed, standing balance time, walking speed, and grip strength. Results Polypharmacy (5–8 prescribed medications) was present in 18.2% of participants at age 69 and excessive polypharmacy (≥9 prescribed medications) in 4.7%. Both were associated with poorer cognitive and physical capability in models adjusted for sex, education, and disease burden. Stronger associations were found for excessive polypharmacy (e.g., difference in mean ACE‐III scores comparing polypharmacy=−2.0, 95% CI=−2.8 to −1.1 and excessive polypharmacy=−2.9, 95% CI=−4.4 to −1.4 with no polypharmacy). Participants with polypharmacy at age 60 to 64 and at age 69 showed stronger Negative associations with cognitive and physical capability were stronger still in participants with polypharmacy at both age 60 to 64 and at age 69 (e.g. difference in mean chair rise speed, comparing polypharmacy with no polypharmacy at both ages=−3.9, 95% CI=−5.2 to −2.6 and at age 60–64 only=−2.5, 95% CI=−4.1 to −0.9). Conclusion Polypharmacy at age 60 to 64 and age 69 was associated with poorer physical and cognitive capability, even after adjusting for disease burden. Stronger negative associations were seen in participants with longstanding polypharmacy, suggesting a cumulative, dose‐dependent relationship (where dose is the number of prescribed medications). Future research aiming to improve cognitive and physical capability should consider interventions to reduce the duration and level of polypharmacy at younger ages, in addition to optimizing disease control with appropriate medications.

Purpose. Using social dominance theory, the primary aim of this study was to examine the attitudes and beliefs that reinforce status hierarchies and facilitate aggressive behavior within and between gangs. The aim was also to determine whether these socio-cognitive processes distinguished gang-involved youth from non-gang offenders in a custodial setting.\ud \ud Methods. Gang-involved youth and non-gang offenders were recruited from a Young Offender Institution (YOI) located in the United Kingdom. Questionnaires assessing psychological (i.e., moral disengagement strategies, anti-authority attitudes, hypermasculinity, and social dominance orientation) and behavioral (i.e., group crime) characteristics were administered individually. We hypothesized that gang-involved youth would be affiliated with groups who engaged in more criminal activity than non-gang offenders, and that they would report higher levels of endorsements than non-gang youth across all of the psychological measures.\ud \ud Results. We found that gang-involved youth were affiliated with groups who engage in more crimes than non-gang offenders. We also found that social dominance orientation was an important factor related to gang involvement along with measures assessing group-based hierarchies such as hypermasculinity, anti-authority attitudes, and the moral disengagement strategies displacement of responsibility, dehumanization, and euphemistic labelling.\ud \ud Conclusions. These findings fit within a social dominance theoretical framework as they highlight key psychological factors that feed into perceived status-driven hierarchies that distinguish gang members from other types of offenders. These factors could be key to developments in treatment provision within custodial settings.

The exact formulation of the correspondence principle and in particular understanding the quantum-to-classical transition remains an open problem in quantum mechanics. In this paper we present our investigation into the quantumto-classical transition of the most trivial of quantum systems — a particle in a box. Whilst it is perhaps surprising, even this example can produce new physical insight into these fundamental problems. With modern fabrication techniques of nano-mechanical systems we will be able to experimentally investigate these results and directly observe the quantum-to-classical transition. This will enable us to build technologies that probe the fundamental questions of quantum mechanics, such as the maximum size of a quantum object.

Theory and conventional wisdom suggest that errors undermine the credibility of tornado warning systems and thus decrease the probability that individuals will comply (i.e., engage in protective action) when future warnings are issued. Unfortunately, empirical research on the influence of warning system accuracy on public responses to tornado warnings is incomplete and inconclusive. This study adds to existing research by analyzing two sets of relationships. First, we assess the relationship between perceptions of accuracy, credibility, and warning response. Using data collected via a large regional survey, we find that trust in the National Weather Service (NWS; the agency responsible for issuing tornado warnings) increases the likelihood that an individual will opt for protective action when responding to a hypothetical warning. More importantly, we find that subjective perceptions of warning system accuracy are, as theory suggests, systematically related to trust in the NWS and (by extension) stated responses to future warnings. The second half of the study matches survey data against NWS warning and event archives to investigate a critical follow-up question--Why do some people perceive that their warning system is accurate, whereas others perceive that their system is error prone? We find that subjective perceptions are--in part-a function of objective experience, knowledge, and demographic characteristics. When considered in tandem, these findings support the proposition that errors influence perceptions about the accuracy of warning systems, which in turn impact the credibility that people assign to information provided by systems and, ultimately, public decisions about how to respond when warnings are issued.

The Study Within A Trial (SWAT) programme exists to ‘embed research within research, so as to resolve uncertainties about the different ways of designing, conducting, analysing and interpreting evaluations of health and social care’ (1). Published in this journal in 2013, a template for the first SWAT protocol outlined an investigation into the effects of site visits by the Principal Investigator on recruitment in multi-centre randomized controlled trials (1). We have now designed a SWAT protocol to extend this question and ask ‘does it matter who conducts the site visit?’ Our aim is to provide a protocol which trials can implement to address this research question.

The goal in blog search is to rank blogs according to their recurrent relevance to the topic of the query. State-of-the-art approaches view it as an expert search or resource selection problem. We investigate the effect of content-based similarity between posts on the performance of the retrieval system. We test two different approaches for smoothing (regularizing) relevance scores of posts based on their dependencies. In the first approach, we smooth term distributions describing posts by performing a random walk over a document-term graph in which similar posts are highly connected. In the second, we directly smooth scores for posts using a regularization framework that aims to minimize the discrepancy between scores for similar documents. We then extend these approaches to consider the time interval between the posts in smoothing the scores. The idea is that if two posts are temporally close, then they are good sources for smoothing each other's relevance scores. We compare these methods with the state-of-the-art approaches in blog search that employ Language Modeling-based resource selection algorithms and fusion-based methods for aggregating post relevance scores. We show performance gains over the baseline techniques which do not take advantage of the relation between posts for smoothing relevance estimates. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Objectives: Psychoeducational approaches are promising interventions for the long-term management of bipolar disorder. In consultation with professionals, patients, and their families we have developed a novel web-based psychoeducational intervention for bipolar disorder called Beating Bipolar. We undertook a preliminary exploratory randomized trial to examine efficacy, feasibility and acceptability. Methods: This was an exploratory randomized controlled trial of Beating Bipolar (current controlled trials registration number: ISRCTN81375447). The control arm was treatment-as-usual and the a priori primary outcome measure was quality of life [measured by the brief World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL–BREF) scale]. Secondary outcomes included psychosocial functioning, insight, depressive and manic symptoms and relapse, and use of healthcare resources. Fifty participants were randomized to either the Beating Bipolar intervention plus treatment-as-usual or just treatment-as-usual. The intervention was delivered over a four-month period and outcomes were assessed six months later. Results: There was no significant difference between the intervention and control groups on the primary outcome measure (total WHOQOL–BREF score) but there was a modest improvement within the psychological subsection of the WHOQOL–BREF for the intervention group relative to the control group. There were no significant differences between the groups on any of the secondary outcome measures. Conclusions: Beating Bipolar is potentially a safe and engaging intervention which can be delivered remotely to large numbers of patients with bipolar disorder at relatively low cost. It may have a modest effect on psychological quality of life. Further work is required to establish the impact of this intervention on insight, knowledge, treatment adherence, self-efficacy and self-management skills.

This paper describes an approach to providing software fault tolerance for future deep-space robotic National Aeronautics and Space Administration missions, which will require a high degree of autonomy supported by an enhanced on-board computational capability. We focus on introspection-based adaptive fault tolerance guided by the specific requirements of applications. Introspection supports monitoring of the program execution with the goal of identifying, locating, and analyzing errors. Fault tolerance assertions for the introspection system can be provided by the user, domain-specific knowledge, or via the results of static or dynamic program analysis. The general commercial rights associated with the Olympic Movement are protected in the UK by the Olympic Symbols etc (Protection) Act 1995. In addition, the UK Government, in response to a requirement of the Host City Contract with the International Olympic Committee, created the London Olympic Association Right under section 33 and Schedule 4 of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games Act 2006. These provisions enable the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games to exploit, to the fullest extent, the commercial rights associated with the London Olympic Games. This article questions whether the IOC's requirement for legislative protection and state enforcement of the commercial rights are compatible with the Fundamental Principles of Olympism as defined in the Olympic Charter, and its stated aim of being a celebration of sporting endeavour, culture and education.

Background Since the first cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in persons with haemophilia were reported in 1982, much has been written about the consequences of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) contamination of the blood supply. Relatively little attention has been paid to similar hepatitis C virus (HCV) concerns since the first cases of HCV-infected persons with haemophilia were identified in 1989. Methods We review the history, public health, policy, and financial consequences of blood supply policy decisions made for persons with haemophilia who received HCV-contaminated blood products in eight countries that were severely impacted by viral contamination of the blood supply during the 1980s, contrasting these findings with those reported previously for HIV contamination of the blood supply during the same time-period. A Medline search and a hand search of retrieved bibliographies of English-language articles on HCV concerns in haemophilia patients published from 1989 to 2006 were performed. Results Our review identified that two- to eightfold more persons with haemophilia in the eight countries contracted HCV vs. HIV from contaminated blood products during the 1980s. Opportunistic infections and immunosuppression-related complications among persons with haemophilia developed shortly after these patients received HIV-infected blood products whereas hepatic complications among HCV-infected persons with haemophilia are just now being diagnosed two decades after these individuals received HCV-contaminated blood products. Policy makers in four countries conducted official public inquiries into blood safety decisions related to HIV- and/or HCV-contamination of the blood supply. More than 20 countries allocated compensation funds for HIV-infected persons with haemophilia (mean award ranging from $37 000 to 400 000) whereas only the UK, Canada, and Ireland allocated compensation funds for HCV-infected persons with haemophilia (mean award ranging from $37 000 to 50 000). Conclusion While the clinical impact among persons with haemophilia of HCV contamination of the blood supply in the 1980s was larger than the impact of HIV contamination of the blood supply during this time-period, the policy response was smaller. Consideration should be given to adopting support programmes for HCV-infected persons with haemophilia in countries that do not have these programs.

Overseas trainees have travelled to gain experience in the UK for many years. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists maintains close ties with its overseas members in order to continue the historical links that provide doctors with training and service provision. In recent years, changes have affected the training opportunities available. This article provides practical advice and a guide to training within the UK. In addition, there is practical advice to overseas trainees who are considering this as an option.

The history of medical education and training has constantly recognised the need for formal and structured training programmes. In spite of this it is only in the 1990s that moves have been made to properly address this problem. In the end it has been the reduction of trainees' hours that has made us stand up and look at how to provide ‘specialist’ training. This review looks at past and present practices for training and is supported by the views of recent trainees. The future is radically different to the past but it remains to be seen whether it is better.

Three model 2,4,6-tris(amino)-1,3,5-triazines, structurally related to a dyestuff molecule previously studied by NMR, were synthesized in order to enable the effects of rotamer exchange on the NMR spectra to be investigated in more detail. Two of the compounds are novel. Internal rotation of the triazine ring substituents was studied by variable-temperature solution-state 1H, 13C and 15N NMR spectroscopy. All the expected rotamers were detected for each molecule. Rotamer exchange rates varied from slow to fast over the temperature range −40 to 90 °C, as observed for the dyestuff molecule itself. Solid-state 13C and 15N NMR provided information about the structures of the solid molecules. A full crystal structure determination from high-resolution powder x-ray diffraction was achieved for one of the molecules using simulated annealing techniques. Ab initio MO and 15N NMR chemical shift calculations, based on energy-minimized structures derived from the x-ray structure determination, enabled the effect of intermolecular hydrogen bonding on the 15N NMR chemical shifts to be studied. The results compared favourably with the experimental solid-state 15N NMR shifts. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Ions experience small deflections in the vicinity of grids in accelerators and ion mirrors in time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometers. Recent experiments with an orthogonal acceleration (oa) TOF instrument have verified that the effect can significantly degrade resolution when ions approach grids at an angle deviating from 90 degrees. The phenomenon becomes significant only when ions have components of velocity at right angles to the wires of the grids. A model is presented in this study to predict this phenomenon for parallel wire grids. The fractional energy spread of ions (calculated in the static TOF-spectrometer frame of reference) scales directly with the approach angle of ions to the grid (as measured from normal approach). The energy spread also scales with the range of angles that is a consequence of the focusing effect in each gap between the wires of the grid. The equations imply that closely spaced parallel wire grids are best for deployment in oa-TOF systems where non-zero approach angles are unavoidable. Such grids are relatively impractical to manufacture and support but rectangular repeat cell grids with relatively few wires at right angles to the source axis are shown experimentally to introduce minimal energy spread. When these grids are rotated by 90 degrees, the resolution measured in a Q-TOF spectrometer is degraded in approximate agreement with the parallel wire model. A practical implication of this work is that grid transmissions in oa-TOF systems may be significantly increased without loss of resolution. Improvements of approximately 200% (V-mode) and approximately 400% (W-mode) in ion transmission were obtained in this study without compromising resolution. This was achieved with approximately 73% transmission grids and greater potential improvements in transmission are being realised since this study with approximately 89% transmission grids having similar geometry.

A unique semisynthetic pathway has been used as a route to acquire radiolabeled material of a complex natural product, R106. The retro-aldol reaction of R106-1 gave a key intermediate R106-sarcosine that was used in a subsequent aldol reaction to incorporate acetone-[2- 14 C].

A growing consensus among many observers of Western European politics has developed in recent years that, in certain countries, national level, consensus-based political bargaining arrangements involving representatives of organized capital, trade unions, and the state are giving way to more sectorally-based, conflictual forms of relations. These developments suggest an overall decline in the efficacy of national-level corporatist institutional structures in the liberal democracies of Western Europe. This article contends that neither of the two general theoretical approaches to the study of corporatism - the liberal model of the “neocorporatist state” (which fails to acknowledge the potential for serious system-threatening instability within corporatism) nor the Marxist model of corporatist “political structures” (which incorrectly predicts labor-generated corporatist instability due to inevitable rank-and-file discontent with the policy outputs of corporatist forms) - can account for this current wave of macro-corporatist instability and decline. In response to this theoretical impasse, this article develops a capitalist-centered explanation for the declining significance of corporatist forms. Business interests, it is maintained, may no longer be viewing corporatist arrangements as beneficial due to certain domestic structural economic changes and to transformations in the global capitalist system.
