2. Multi‐Length Scale Structure of 2D/3D Dion–Jacobson Hybrid Perovskites Based on an Aromatic Diammonium Spacer

Abstract

Dion-Jacobson (DJ) iodoplumbates based on 1,4-phenylenedimethanammonium (PDMA) have recently emerged as promising light absorbers for perovskite solar cells. While PDMA is one of the simplest aromatic spacers potentially capable of forming a DJ structure based on (PDMA)An-1 Pbn I3n+1 composition, the crystallographic proof has not been reported so far. Single crystal structure of a DJ phase based on PDMA is presented and high-field solid-state NMR spectroscopy is used to characterize the structure of PDMA-based iodoplumbates prepared as thin films and bulk microcrystalline powders. It is shown that their atomic-level structure does not depend on the method of synthesis and that it is ordered and similar for all iodoplumbate homologues. Moreover, the presence of lower (n) homologues in thin films is identified through UV-Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction measurements, complemented by cathodoluminescence mapping. A closer look using cathodoluminescence shows that the micron-scale microstructure corresponds to a mixture of different layered homologues that are well distributed throughout the film and the presence of layer edge states which dominate the emission. This work therefore determines the formation of DJ phases based on PDMA as the spacer cation and reveals their properties on a multi-length scale, which is relevant for their application in optoelectronics.

Abstract

Narrow 1H NMR linewidths can be obtained for fully protonated protein samples in the solid state by using ultrafast magic-angle spinning (60 kHz). Medium-size microcrystalline and noncrystalline proteins can be analyzed without any need for deuteration of the protein sample. Abstract

A matter of minutes: Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is applied to enhance the signal of solid-state NMR spectra of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials. The signal enhancement enables the acquisition of high-quality 1D 13C solid-state NMR spectra, 2D 1H- 13C dipolar HETCOR and 1D 15N solid-state NMR spectra with natural isotopic abundance in experiment times on the order of minutes. Abstract

Unambiguous identification of individual metabolites present in complex mixtures such as biofluids constitutes a crucial prerequisite for quantitative metabolomics, toward better understanding of biochemical processes in living systems. Increasing the dimensionality of a given NMR correlation experiment is the natural solution for resolving spectral overlap. However, in the context of metabolites, natural abundance acquisition of (1)H and (13)C NMR data virtually excludes the use of higher dimensional NMR experiments (3D, 4D, etc.) that would require unrealistically long acquisition times. Here, we introduce projection NMR techniques for studies of complex mixtures, and we show how discrete sets of projection spectra from higher dimensional NMR experiments are obtained in a reasonable time frame, in order to capture essential information necessary to resolve assignment ambiguities caused by signal overlap in conventional 2D NMR spectra. We determine optimal projection angles where given metabolite resonances will have the least overlap, to obtain distinct metabolite assignment in complex mixtures. The method is demonstrated for a model mixture composition made of ornithine, putrescine and arginine for which acquisition of a single 2D projection of a 3D (1)H-(13)C TOCSY-HSQC spectrum allows to disentangle the metabolite signals and to access to complete profiling of this model mixture in the targeted 2D projection plane. Abstract

The monosiloxy surface complexes [([triple bond]SiO)Mo([triple bond]NAr)(=CHCMe(2)R')(OR)] (R' = Me or Ph; OR = OtBu, OCMe(CF(3))(2) or OAr) are obtained by grafting onto SiO(2-(700)) either symmetric Mo-alkylidene derivatives [Mo([triple bond]NAr)(=CHCMe(2)R')(OR)(2)] or asymmetric derivatives, that is, with two different pendant ligands, one amido and one alkoxy/aryloxy, [Mo([triple bond]NAr)(=CHCMe(2)R')(OR)(NC(6)H(8))]. The formation of these complexes was confirmed by mass-balance analysis, and infrared (IR) and NMR spectroscopies. These systems are highly efficient catalyst precursors for the metathesis of acyclic alkenes; the best results were seen when OR=OCMe(CF(3))(2). Nevertheless, they display poor performances in ring-closing metathesis, possibly due to the rigidity of the metal center (as evidenced by NMR spectroscopy), which therefore slows the rate of the metathesis.

Abstract

International audience; Hyperpolarization by dynamic nuclear polarization relies on the microwave irradiation of paramagnetic radicals dispersed in molecular glasses to enhance the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals of target molecules. However, magnetic or chemical interactions between the radicals and the target molecules can lead to attenuation of the NMR signal through paramagnetic quenching and/or radical decomposition. Here we describe polarizing materials incorporating nitroxide radicals within the walls of the solids to minimize interactions between the radicals and the solute. These materials can hyperpolarize pure pyruvic acid, a particularly important substrate of clinical interest, while nitroxide radicals cannot be used, even when incorporated in the pores of silica, because of reactions between pyruvic acid and the radicals. The properties of these materials can be engineered by tuning the composition of the wall by introducing organic functionalities.

Abstract

The experimental determination of slice profiles excited by applying radiofrequency pulses in the presence of a gradient generally results in magnitude profiles. The conditions necessary to obtain a phase-sensitive picture of the profile of a slice are discussed. A distinction is made between the "excitation profile" (distribution of the transverse magnetization immediately after the RF pulse) and the "slice profile" (distribution after refocusing by gradient reversal and/or imperfect gradient switching). Methods are presented that allow one to obtain either the excitation profile or the slice profile. It is shown that phase encoding along the direction of the slice selection gradient provides a convenient protocol for obtaining the distribution of both the real and imaginary parts of the slice profile. The phase sensitive excitation profile can be obtained by frequency encoding. These methods were used to evaluate the performance of various shaped pulses. [on SciFinder (R)]

Abstract

Recent advances in solid state NMR spectroscopy have made possible the understanding of surface species and active sites of heterogeneous catalysts at a molecular level. This tutorial review describes solid state NMR spectroscopy, what are the possible techniques to obtain high resolution and 2D spectra (structural information), and what are their applications in the context of well-defined heterogeneous catalysts prepared by surface organometallic chemistry.

Abstract

A new method called selective inversion soft COSY (SIS-COSY) is described. By using this method the coupling between active and passive spins can be detected. The pulse sequence consists of 3 semiselective 270 Deg pulses, which gives a spectrum consisting of 2 pos. and 2 neg. signals. The method is applied to the cis and trans isomers of 2-phenylcyclopropanecarbonic acid Me ester. [on SciFinder (R)]

Abstract

It is demonstrated, on the grounds of simulations, how 270 degrees Gaussian pulses can be used for slice selection in nuclear magnetic resonance imaging experiments. It is shown that the usual gradient reversal procedure can be omitted if the selective 90 degrees pulse normally used is replaced by a self-refocusing 270 degrees pulse with a Gaussian time-domain amplitude profile, and some of the properties which are specific to this type of pulse are explored.
