In some cases, wildlife management objectives directed at multiple species can conflict with one another, creating species trade-offs. For managers to effectively identify trade-offs and avoid their undesirable outcomes, they must understand the agents involved and their corresponding interactions. A literature review of interspecific trade-offs within freshwater and marine ecosystems was conducted to illustrate the scope of potential interspecific trade-offs that may occur. We identified common pitfalls that lead to failed recognition of interspecific trade-offs, including, single-species management and limited consideration of the spatial and temporal scale of ecosystems and their management regimes. We devised a classification framework of common interspecific trade-offs within aquatic systems. The classification can help managers determine whether the conflict is species based through direct relationships (i.e., predator-prey, competition, other antagonistic relationships) or indirect relationships involving intermediate species (i.e., conflict-generating species) or whether the conflict is driven by opposing management objectives for species that would otherwise not interact (i.e., nontarget management effects). Once the nature and scope of trade-offs are understood, existing decision-making tools, such as structured decision-making and real-options analysis, can be incorporated to improve the management of aquatic ecosystems. Se realizó una revisión literaria de las compensaciones interespecíficas dentro de los ecosistemas marinos y de agua dulce para ilustrar el alcance de las compensaciones interespecíficas que pueden ocurrir. Identificamos dificultades comunes que llevan al reconocimiento fallido de las compensaciones interespecíficas, incluyendo el manejo de una sola especie y sus regímenes de manejo. Diseñamos un marco de clasificación de compensaciones interespecíficas comunes dentro de los ecosistemas acuáticos. La clasificación puede ayudar a los manejadores a determinar si el conflicto está basado en las especies por sus relaciones directas (es decir, depredador-presa, competencia, otras relaciones antagonistas) o por relaciones indirectas que involucran a otras especies (es decir, efectos del manejo de especies que no son el objetivo). RATIONALE: Dried blood spots (DBSs) are gaining popularity for biomarker analyses in ecological research due to their advantages for use in field-based research and in remote settings, however, many DBS biomarkers remain unvalidated. We validated the application of compound-specific stable nitrogen isotope analyses of amino acids (CSIA-AAs) to field-prepared DBSs for determining trophic positions of wild-caught Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus). METHODS: Whole blood and muscle from Arctic char were collected and DBSs were created in the field. We measured the stable nitrogen isotope ratios (expressed as δ(15)N values) of the amino acids glutamic acid (Glu) and phenylalanine (Phe) isolated from Arctic char samples using CSIA-AAs. We then compared amino acid δ(15)N values from DBSs and the other sample types (whole blood and muscle) from the same specimens. We calculated and compared trophic position estimates generated from whole blood, DBSs, and muscle. RESULTS: The δ(15)N values of Glu and Phe, as well as trophic position estimates from DBSs were highly correlated with δ(15)N values and estimates from both whole blood and muscle. DBS amino acid δ(15)N values and trophic position estimates agreed well with those from whole blood. Although, mean differences between amino acid δ(15)N values from DBSs and muscle were noted, the offsets were small and resulted in a 0.2 mean difference between trophic position estimates for DBSs and muscle. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrate that the application of CSIA-AAs to field-prepared DBSs of Arctic char generates similar trophic position estimates compared to whole blood and muscle. We suggest that DBSs could be developed as a minimally invasive sampling technique to study feeding ecology of wild fish and perhaps other organisms of interest.

The relationship between physicochemical factors and plankton abundance in the newly created Bui reservoir was studied during 2011 and 2012. The objective was to assess the influence of physicochemical factors on plankton abundance and provide data for monitoring the hydrobiology of the newly created Bui reservoir. Two sampling stations were selected on the Black Volta upstream (Bui) and downstream (Bamboi) of the dam, with samples taken pre- and postimpoundment during the study period. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to trace temporal plankton community changes and to examine the relationships between species composition and physicochemical variables. The relative abundance of some phytoplankton species such as Anabaena sp., Planktothrix sp. and Scenedesmus sp. was directly correlated to nitrates. CCA indicated that physicochemical variables explained 41–64% of zooplankton and 8–12% of phytoplankton variation. Hence, there were correlations between environmental variables and the structure of plankton assemblages. This feature should therefore be used for bio-monitoring of environmental variables of the river by the Bui Power Authority to ensure protection of the aquatic biota downstream of the Bui dam. Resume Nous avons etudie en 2011 et 2012 la relation entre certains facteurs physico-chimiques et l'abondance du plancton dans le nouveau reservoir de Bui. Notre objectif etait d'evaluer l'influence de facteurs physico-chimiques sur l'abondance du plancton et de recolter des donnees pour le suivi de l'hydrobiologie dans ce nouveau reservoir. Nous avons selectionne deux stations d'echantillonnage sur le cours de la Volta noire, en amont (Bui) et en aval (Bamboi) du barrage, et preleve des echantillons avant et apres sa mise en eau. Une Analyse canonique des correspondances (ACC) fut utilisee pour suivre les changements de la communaute de plancton dans le temps et pour examiner la relation entre certaines especes de phytoplancton et des variables physico-chimiques. L'abondance relative de certaines especes de phytoplancton, tels Anabaena sp., Planktothrix sp. et Scenedesmus sp., fut directement liee aux nitrates. L'ACC indiquait que des variables physico-chimiques expliquaient de 41 a 64% des variations du zooplancton et de 8 a 12% de celles du phytoplancton. Il y avait donc des correlations entre des variables environnementales et la structure des assemblages de plancton. Cette caracteristique devrait donc etre prise en compte pour le bio-monitoring des variables environnementales de la riviere par les autorites hydro-electriques de Bui pour garantir la protection des biotes aquatiques en aval du barrage de Bui.

Summary The ecology of the oyster pathogens Vibrio splendidus and Vibrio aestuarianus in the brackish aquatic environment was extensively investigated in this study. By conducting laboratory experiments under natural setting conditions, it was shown that V. splendidus LGP32 strain generally exhibits longer persistence in both seawater and sediment than V. aestuarianus 01/32 strain. Both strains maintained viability and culturability for longer times in the sediment, suggesting that this compartment may represent a suitable niche for their persistence in the environment. In addition, both strains attached to chitin particles and copepods, the efficiency of attachment being higher in V. splendidus than in V. aestuarianus. Similarly, LGP32 strain showed a greater capability to form biofilm on poly-vinyl chloride (PVC) surfaces than 01/32 strain. LGP32 and 01/32 strains were also capable of entering a viable but non-culturable state after extended incubation at 5°C, a condition commonly found during cold season in the aquatic brackish environment. These results are consistent with field data collected during a 2-year sampling campaign in the northern Adriatic Sea and provide background information on the mechanisms promoting V. splendidus and V. aestuarianus persistence in coastal water, thus contributing to a better understanding of the epidemiology of the associated diseases.

Many organisms seasonally modify their standard metabolic rates (SMR). However, the diversity of cues triggering the acclimatization response remains little understood. We examined the influence of experimentally induced aquatic-to-terrestrial habitat shift on the thermal sensitivity of SMR in newts. Standard metabolic rates increased with temperature (13-23°C), although consistently lower in terrestrial than aquatic individuals. Motor activity during respirometry trials decreased with temperature at similar rates in both groups. We conclude that in newts, a habitat shift might represent an important modulator of the seasonal acclimatization response in SMR. Lowered SMR suggests the potential to reduce newt maintenance costs and depletion of caloric reserves during the activity-limited period on land.

Summary 1. In order to characterise phytoplankton patchiness at fine scales, a profiling multiwavelength fluorometer was cast at numerous locations throughout Winam Gulf in Lake Victoria to measure fluorescent excitation spectra, which are indicators of both phytoplankton diversity and coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM). 2. Processing the spectral data with principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that linear combinations of four fundamental ‘base’ spectra could explain almost all of the variation in spectral measurements. Three of the base spectra were associated with spatially distinct patches of phytoplankton containing different species assemblages, while the fourth base spectrum was due to CDOM fluorescence. 3. The locations of the phytoplankton patches were traced to the south-east of Winam Gulf, the western end of the Rusinga Channel and the open waters of Lake Victoria adjacent to Winam Gulf, respectively. The high CDOM fluorescence was traced mainly to relatively deep water in the Rusinga Channel. 4. The phytoplankton and CDOM patchiness were interpreted in the context of physical and chemical gradients that were measured at the site at the same scale as the spectral data. Strong relationships were found between the gradients in spectral data and other environmental variables, which suggested several underlying explanations for the phytoplankton and CDOM patchiness.

We examined responses of macroinvertebrate assemblages to environmental and temporal variations along spring source-spring brook transects in two fen habitats, sharply differing in groundwater chemistry, and compared the patterns among individual taxonomical groups. We hypothesised a different importance of environmental heterogeneity and seasonal changes primarily linked to strong tufa precipitation, which causes stronger environmental filtering in the calcareous fen. In concordance, we observed that assemblages of the more homogenous calcareous fen primarily changed over time, due to seasonal shifts in source availability and favourable conditions.

The effect of phosphorous enrichment on decomposition rate, exoenzymatic activities (β-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase and alkaline phosphatase), and macroinvertebrate abundance in Typha latifolia leaves were assessed in a 2nd order Pampean stream (Central Argentina). Phosphorous was added to a downstream reach while another reach located upstream was kept intact and, once significant differences in phosphorus concentration in water were attained, leaf bags were attached to each reach bottom. T. latifolia leaves lost 77% of their initial weight along 154 days and decomposition rates were not significantly different between reaches. Besides, neither exoenzymatic activities nor macroinvertebrate abundances differed between reaches. However, an increment in leaf phosphorus content, attributed to immobilization by decomposer microorganisms, was detected in the enriched reach.

We studied the diet of 50 individuals of Hyalella sp. collected in the karstic headwaters of a high-altitude Andean river (3817 m a.s.l. Peru) in four different habitats: macrophytes, bryophytes, leaf litter, and layers of travertine. The gut content analysis showed a dominance of fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) in most habitats – layers of travertine (69.5%), Myriophylum (58.5%) and bryophytes (56.8%) – except for individuals collected in leaf litter where coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) represented 68% of gut content, which indicates a high trophic flexibility of Hyalella sp. Likewise, in an experiment with feeding chambers in situ during three days, twenty individuals of Hyalella sp. presented a higher consumption of leaf litter of native species (Polylepis sp.) The ai m of this study was to examine the combined effect of water transparency and narrow macrophyte belts on zooplankton assemblages in two oxbow lakes (Krapina River, Croatia). Samples were collected in open water and among helophytes in the littoral zone from April until September 2008. Rotifers were the most abundant group of zooplankton in both lakes, and dominated in the Krapina oxbow lake 1 (KO1). Lake KO1 had significantly lower transparency, lower percentage macrophyte cover and higher chlorophyll a concentration than Krapina oxbow lake 2 (KO2). In lake KO1, variation in the horizontal distribution of cladocerans and rotifers in terms of their abundance seemed to be determined by competition between Bosmina longirostris and Keratella cochlearis, initiated by oscillation in transparency and detritus availability. In lake KO2, with higher transparency and higher percentage macrophyte cover, the abundance of small- and large-bodied cladocerans increased in the littoral zone simultaneously with higher transparency, suggesting fish predation. Results of this study indicated that small differences in transparencies between the two lakes caused significant differences in horizontal distribution of the zooplankton assemblage. Even narrow helophyte belts offered a refuge to zooplankton, although lower transparencies reduced the effectiveness of macrophytes as a refuge from predators.

The leech Dina punctata Johanson, 1927 inhabits various types of running waters. This species appeared in Slovakia probably after the first Rhine-Main-Danube canal was built. Because little is known about its ecology, the aim of our study was to analyze the life cycle, individual growth rate, reproduction parameters and food composition of D. punctata in the Vydrica Stream. Samples of leeches were taken mainly each month from April 2003 to November 2004. The leech D. punctata had maximal 2-year life cycle there. Mature leeches, which were recognized by the presence of clitella, were present from April to the end of August. The most individuals mature at the age of 1 year. The breeding season of D. punctata peaks in June. The number of eggs per one cocoon is from 3 to 12. The mean successfulness of development of egg to embryo is 58%. Larvae from the family Chironomidae (28%), Gammarus fossarum (20%) and oligochaetes from the subfamily Naidinae (17%) are the dominant components of the feeding niche. The aim of the study was to estimate the influence of environmental conditions resulting from coal mining on the diversity of bottom oligochaete communities in subsidence ponds. In the ponds studied 17 oligochaete species representing the families Lumbriculidae (1 species), Enchytraeidae (1 species) and Naididae (15 species), in the new sense (Erseus et al., 2008) were collected. The presence of Aulodrilus japonicus Yamaguchi, 1953 and Potamothrix bavaricus (Oschmann, 1913), rare species in anthropogenic water bodies, is noteworthy. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that the important factors influencing oligochaete distribution in the subsidence ponds studied were the type of substratum, the organic matter content of the sediment as well as the mineralization of the water. Two rivers in Norway were treated with rotenone in an effort to eradicate the salmon parasite, Gyrodactylus salaris. Rotenone induced an immediate catastrophic invertebrate drift, mainly of dead individuals. The response to rotenone with respect to degree and timing varied widely. Baetis rhodani, Isoperla sp. and Rhyacophila nubila displayed a strong increase in drift densities early in the treatment. Baetis niger, Ameletus inopinatus, Heptagenia sp. and Agapetusochripes showed a delayed response. Ephemerella aurivillii, E. mucronata, Taeniopteryx nebulosa and Elmis aenea drifted at low densities throughout the treatment. Early larval instar tended to be more sensitive to rotenone than later instar, and the toxic effect of rotenone tended to increase with increasing water temperature. The aim of this study was to quantify and qualify seasonal changes of all important components of a microbial biofilm community. We explored the development of the biofilm community structure on submerged glass slides for 15 months including all organisms from bacteria to macro-invertebrates. Besides bacteria, heterotrophic flagellates were the most abundant biofilm component followed by ciliates, meiofauna organisms and algae. Most important were sessile choanoflagellates, peritrichous ciliates and some crustaceans. Ciliates and macrofauna were the most important components with regard to the total biovolume. The biofilm architecture was strongly influenced by extracellular structures produced by protozoans and macro-invertebrates. Alterations within the biofilm community were mainly due to changes in abundances rather than in the composition except for heterotrophic flagellates and macroinvertebrates. Biofilm organisms were dominated by planktivorous organisms exerting a strong grazing impact on the plankton organisms in this large river.

The Gemenc floodplain of the Danube possesses numerous side arms and backwaters. The aim of my study was to explore connections between hydrological events and diversity patterns of the planktonic rotifer assemblages of these water bodies. During the study period (2002–2008) 75 taxa of rotifers were found. Generally, the water bodies of the floodplain had more diverse rotifer assemblages than the main arm. At low and medium water levels diversity was highest in the parapotamal water bodies. This result may be explained by the intermediate disturbance hypothesis. At high water levels the highest biodiversities shifted to the plesiopotamal. Biodiversity, dominance, and evenness correlated with water flow and temperature. Patterns of biodiversity seem to be determined by the water level of the main arm; therefore the water regime appears to provide pronounced temporal variability in the hydro-ecology of the floodplain. We here describe the new proalid rotifer species Bryceella perpusilla n. sp. on the basis of light and electron microscopy. The species, certainly representing one of the smallest rotifer and even metazoan species at all, was obtained in January 2008 from terrestrial mosses of North-west Germany. Bryceella perpusilla n. sp. is distinguished from other species of the genus by the very small size, the slender body outline, the short apical styli, the triangular rostrum, the outward curving, blunt and rod-shaped toes, the four-nucleated vitellogermarium, the slender manubria and the caudally directed alulae. With our observations, that can be used for future cladistic analyses of the Proalidae, we are able to define the generic diagnosis of Bryceella more precisely and to give an adapted species key. The Laurentian Great Lakes Basin provides an ecological system to evaluate the potential effect of climate change on dynamics of fish populations and the management of their fisheries. This review describes the physical and biological mechanisms by which fish populations will be affected by changes in timing and duration of ice cover, precipitation events and temperature regimes associated with projected climate change in the Great Lakes Basin with a principal focus on the fish communities in shallower regions of the basin. Lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis, walleye Sander vitreus and smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu were examined to assess the potential effects of climate change on guilds of Great Lakes cold, cool and warm-water fishes, respectively. Overall, the projections for these fishes are for the increased thermally suitable habitat within the lakes, though in different regions than they currently inhabit. Colder-water fishes will seek refuge further north and deeper in the water column and warmer-water fishes will fill the vacated habitat space in the warmer regions of the lakes. While these projections can be modified by a number of other habitat elements (e.g. anoxia, ice cover, dispersal ability and trophic productivity), it is clear that climate-change drivers will challenge the nature, flexibility and public perception of current fisheries management programmes. Fisheries agencies should develop decision support tools to provide a systematic method for incorporating ecological responses to climate change and moderating public interests to ensure a sustainable future for Great Lakes fishes and fisheries.

Ecologic relationships are usually non-linear and highly complex. For this reason, artificial neural networks (ANN) were selected to model zooplankton density groups in the Coqueiro lake in the northern Pantanal of Brazil. The input layer used 11 limnological variables with 13 neurons in the hidden layer; the output layer consisted of three zooplankton groups. Samples were collected monthly between April 2002 and May 2003, at three different points of the lake, two of which were used for training the ANNs and the other for validation. The ANN model performed well at predicting the density of zooplankton groups (coefficients of determination r2were 0.88, 0.50 and 0.82 for rotifers, cladocerans and copepods, respectively). The comparison between models, and the ANN techniques used, demonstrated that zooplankton densities, observed one month previously, did not influence current densities, which were determined by limnological conditions in the lake. It was also shown that the processes that relate zooplankton to their environment remained stable during the study, while a model sensitivity analysis showed that the density dynamics of zooplankton groups in the Coqueiro lake were strongly influenced by availability of food (phytoplankton and detritus) and by variations in water-level. It can be concluded from the study that ANNs are a powerful tool both for predicting zooplankton densities and for understanding their relationships with the environment. Feeding behaviour and consumption rates of the caddisfly Micropterna sequax (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae) larvae were investigated under laboratory conditions. The consumption rates of M. sequax were measured at four temperatures (5.5, 9.5, 13 and 19 °C) and its feeding preferences among four leaf species (European beech, oak, chestnut and oriental plane) were studied. Furthermore, fresh and senescent conditioned or not beech leaves were offered to Micropterna larvae to assess the impact of the leaf age and conditioning on the larvae feeding rates. Temperature exerted a pronounced effect on the consumption rates of the larvae, the optimum temperature for feeding being 13 °C. In all the experiments, larvae showed a sound preference for chestnut leaves over the other leaves tested, with consumption rates of up to 0.55 mg leaf mg–1 animal d–1. Senescent beech leaves were clearly preferred against fresh ones, while no significant differences were recorded between the consumption rates of conditioned and non-conditioned plant material. To contribute to the biogeographical knowledge of rotifers, we critically re-evaluate the species of Lecanidae recorded from Thailand. We report on a number of rare (L. armata Thomasson, L. bulla diabolica Hauer, L. chinesensis Zhuge and Koste) and one new species of Lecane. Lecane latissima Yamamoto is recognized as the senior synonym of Lecane thailandensis Segers and Sanoamuang, L. kostei De Ridder is reestablised as valid name for the cold-water bipolar taxon formerly referred to as L. latissima. Some dubious and dated records of taxa are reconsidered. In total, we confirm 92 species of Lecane from the country, which is almost half of the world's diversity of the taxon, and a limited degree of endemics to various scales, from countrywide to Paleotropical. These results are in accord with the moderate endemicity model of distribution and diversity patterns in microscopic organisms. A potential new avenue of research may be to unravel cryptic diversity in species complexes such as the L. ludwigii, L. lunaris, L. bulla, L. leontina and L. quadridentata species groups as models of tropical and subtropical micrometazoans. Analyses of the effects of extreme climate periods have been used as a tool to predict ecosystem functioning and processes in a warmer world. The winter half-year 2006/2007 (w06/07) has been extremely warm and was estimated to be a half-a-millennium event in central Europe. Here we analyse the consequences of w06/07 for the temperatures, mixing dynamics, phenologies and population developments of algae and daphnids (thereafter w06/07 limnology) in a deep central European lake and investigate to what extent analysis of w06/07 limnology can really be used as a predictive tool regarding future warming. Different approaches were used to put the observations during w06/07 into context: (1) a comparison of w06/07 limnology with long-term data, (2) a comparison of w06/07 limnology with that of the preceding year, and (3) modelling of temperature and mixing dynamics using numerical experiments. These analyses revealed that w06/07 limnology in Lake Constance was indeed very special as the lake did not mix below 60 m depth throughout winter. Because of this, anomalies of variables associated strongly with mixing behaviour, e.g., Schmidt stability and a measure for phosphorus upward mixing during winter exceeded several standard deviations the long-term mean of these variables. However, our modelling results suggest that this extreme hydrodynamical behaviour was only partially due to w06/07 meteorology per se, but depended also strongly on the large difference in air temperature to the previous cold winter which resulted in complete mixing and considerable cooling of the water column. Furthermore, modelling results demonstrated that with respect to absolute water temperatures, the model ‘w06/07’ most likely underestimates the increase in water temperature in a warmer world as one warm winter is not sufficient to rise water temperatures in a deep lake up to those expected under a future climate.

The complexity of the relations between the organisms and the environment are reflected through the energy content. So we tested the hypothesis on body energy content variation in invertebrates and its relation with some environmental factors (season, habitat type, trophic status and trophic guild). We expected higher energy values for phytophilous fauna, rainy season, in reservoirs with higher trophic levels and for herbivorous invertebrates. The results showed the influence of seasonality and trophic status of the reservoir on the energy content of invertebrates, which was higher in the rainy season and in the mesotrophic reservoirs, due to the input of allochthonous material during this season, confirming our initial prediction. A higher caloric content was recorded for carnivorous and detritivorous invertebrates. The differences between the trophic guilds were primarily related to the opportunistic feeding behavior, which may be considered as one of the main factors controlling the energy flow of benthic and phytophilous invertebrates. Beginning in the mid-1980s Lake Victoria experienced severe eutrophication and it was suggested that deteriorating water quality might lead to a collapse of its fisheries. A series of lake-wide surveys carried out 1999–2001 and 2005–2009 revealed that the temperature of the lake had risen by > 1 °C since 1927, with more rapid warming of the deeper waters reducing the thermal gradient in the water column and thus weakening stratification and the extent and severity of deoxygenation. The chlorophyll a concentrations in open water decreased since the 1980s, while Secchi disc visibility increased, indicating a reduced severity of algal blooms. Chlorophyll a was higher and Secchi disc visibility lower in inshore waters but there has been no deterioration in these areas since the 1980s. The conductivity remained unchanged, although it was about 50% greater in the semi-enclosed Nyanza Gulf than in the open lake. The water quality of the lake has therefore improved considerably despite the fact than concentrations of plant nutrients have not decreased and the reasons why this may be the case are discussed. The aim of this study was to examine the community structure and vertical micro-distribution of testate amoebae and ciliates in a raised bog in eastern Poland, as well as to assess the influence of potential food resources (Chl-a, bacteria, heterotrophic flagellates) and predators (rotifers and copepods) on protozoa communities. Samples were taken from surface, bottom and interstitial waters. At each type of micro-habitat and each sampling date water was sampled using a plexiglass corer or mini-piezometers. Additionally, in order to evaluate grazing pressure, field enclosures were used in which metazoan abundance and composition was manipulated by size-fractionation. Over experiments, metazoan populations shifted from dominance of rotifers to copepods. In the first experiment, with rotifers dominating, metazoa had only a modest predatory impact on the protozoa. In contrast, the second experiment, with copepods prevailing, demonstrated a clear top-down control of the protozoa communities by metazoan. The density and biomass of protozoa significantly differed between the studied stations, with the lowest numbers in the interstitial water and the highest in the surface water. Surface sampling were dominated by mixotrophic taxa, whereas the deepest sampling level was characterized by increase in the proportion of bacterivore species. These differences between micro-habitats may be due to differences in environmental conditions (food resources and grazing pressure). Ordination analysis revealed that bacteria can strongly regulate the abundance and taxonomic composition of protozoa in the bottom and interstitial waters. Rotifers were studied at two sites (Zhongda and Huangpu) in the tidal Guangzhou segment of the Pearl River in China, from April 2004 to March 2007. Fifty-six species were recorded. Rotifers were most abundant during late fall. Overall, densities ranged from 4 to 5975 ind. L–1, with mean densities of 1627 ± 233 ind. L–1 at Zhongda and 1051 ± 147 ind. L–1 at Huangpu. There was a positive correlation between rotifer density and chlorophyll a concentration at both sites. At Huangpu, rotifer abundance was significantly negatively correlated with salinity. Analysis of partial correlations suggested that the fluvial hydrodynamics and the physico-chemical characteristics of the river affected chlorophyll and the development of rotifer populations was determined by chlorophyll in the lower reaches of Pearl River. Trout farming is constantly increasing and poses a serious threat to water quality of clean highland streams. In the present work, we investigated the influence of the farm with the highest trout production in Serbia on water quality and macrozoobenthos communities of the receiving stream, the Tresnjica River. Our study revealed that changes of water chemistry parameters downstream from the trout farm were moderate and mainly confined to the part of the watercourse closest to the wastewater outlet. Moreover, use of food with 0.8% phosphorus content was sufficient to completely eliminate soluble phosphates from water samples of the Tresnjica River. However, the changes in water chemistry were sufficient to cause significant changes in the macrozoobenthos community. These changes remained statistically significant even 500 m downstream and were lost about 3.5 km from the trout farm wastewater effluent. The trout biomass on the farm is a parameter that adequately defines the magnitude of its impact, above all the intensity of its influence on the zoobenthos community structure. Hydroacoustic counting and a three-year mark-recapture study with passive integrated transponders (PIT tags) were used to estimate the size of a spawning population of nase Chondrostoma nasus, a threatened potamodromous cyprinid that undertakes annual spawning migrations into a tributary of the Danube River. In 2005, the estimates of the size of the spawning population from the hydroacoustic counts (N = 2234, 95% CL 1929-2538) and from the Jolly-Seber model (N = 1198, 95% CL 461-5842) corresponded well. Estimates from the jackknife-estimator based on the hydroacoustic counts yielded slightly higher values (N = 2783, 95% CL 2529-3037), but were still in the same order of magnitude as those from the hydroacoustic and mark-recapture approach. At low run-size, hydroacoustic counting was more time consuming and technically demanding than mark-recapture studies. At the same time, it was non-invasive, provided real-time data on a fine temporal scale, and estimates showed less variability than the Jolly-Seber model. Mark-recapture of fish in spawning streams involved substantial disturbance at a sensitive stage of the life cycle. Hence, hydroacoustics is highly suited for population estimates of threatened potamodromous fishes, where interference needs to be minimized.

Plankton communities in eight lakes of different trophic status near Yangtze, China were characterized by using denatured gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Various water quality parameters were also measured at each collection site. Following extraction of DNA from plankton communities, 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA genes were amplified with specific primers for prokaryotes and eukaryotes, respectively; DNA profiles were developed by DGGE. The plankton community of each lake had its own distinct DNA profile. The total number of bands identified at 34 sampling stations ranged from 37 to 111. Both prokaryotes and eukaryotes displayed complex fingerprints composed of a large number of bands: 16 to 59 bands were obtained with the prokaryotic primer set; 21 to 52 bands for the eukaryotic primer set. The DGGE-patterns were analyzed in relation to water quality parameters by canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Temperature, pH, alkalinity, and the concentration of COD, TP and TN were strongly correlated with the DGGE patterns. The parameters that demonstrated a strong correlation to the DGGE fingerprints of the plankton community differed among lakes, suggesting that differences in the DGGE fingerprints were due mainly to lake trophic status. Results of the present study suggest that PCR-DGGE fingerprinting is an effective and precise method of identifying changes to plankton community composition, and therefore could be a useful ecological tool for monitoring the response of aquatic ecosystems to environmental perturbations.

From July 2003 to June 2005, investigations of rotifer temporal and spatial distributions were carried out in a bay of the Three Gorges Reservoir, Xiangxi Bay, which is the downstream segment of the Xiangxi River and the nearest bay to the Three Gorges Reservoir dam in Hubei Province, China. Thirteen sampling sites were selected. The results revealed a high species diversity, with 76 species, and 14 dominant species; i.e., Polyarthra vulgaris, Keratella cochlearis, Keratella valga, Synchaeta tremula, Synchaeta stylata, Trichocerca lophoessa, Trichocerca pusilla, Brachionus angularis, Brachionus calyciflorus, Brachionus forficula forficula, Ascomorpha ovalis, Conochilus unicornis, Ploesoma truncatum and Anuraeopsis fissa. After the first year of the reservoir impoundment, the rotifer community was dominated by ten species; one year later it was dominated by eight species. The community in 2003/2004 was dissimilar to that in 2004/2005, which resulted from the succession of the dominant species. The rotifer community exhibited a patchy distribution, with significant heterogeneity observed along the longitudinal axis. All rotifer communities could be divided into three groups, corresponding to the riverine, the transition and the lacustrine zone, respectively.

Plecoptera constitute a numerically and ecologically significant component in mountain streams all over the world, but little is known of their life cycles in Asia. The life cycle of Nemoura sichuanensis and its relationship to water temperature was investigated during a 4-year study in a headwater stream (known as the Jiuchong torrent) of the Xiangxi River in Central China. Size structure histograms suggest that the life cycle was univoltine, and the relationships between the growth of Nemoura sichuanensis, physiological time, and effective accumulated water temperature were described using logistic regressions. The growth pattern was generally similar within year classes but growth rates did vary between year-classes. Our field data suggest a critical thermal threshold for emergence in Nemoura sichuanensis, that was close to 9 degrees C. The total number of physiological days required for completing larval development was 250 days. The effective accumulated water temperature was 2500 degree-days in the field. Development during the life cycle increased somewhat linearly with the physiological time and the effective accumulated water temperature, but some non-linear relationships were best developed by logistic equations.

The degraded state of the fragile ecosystem of Chilika Lake, located on the east coast of India, was undergoing restoration through an effective hydrological intervention during the year 2000. Studies on the lake’s hydrobiology and fisheries for the period of 7 years before and 7 years after the hydrological intervention indicated a rapid recovery of the lake fishery immediately after opening of the new lake mouth, with a sixfold increase in the average annual fish landings. During 2000–2001 to 2006–2007, the average fisheries output (11 051.3 t), catch per unit effort (6.2 kg boat−1 day−1), the economic valuation of the average annual catch (637 million rupees) and productivity (11.97 t km−2) exhibited dramatic increases of 498%, 464%, 1177% and 498.5%, respectively, compared with the 7-year pre-intervention data. Multivariate statistical analysis inferred that most of the lake’s environmental variables are strongly associated with salinity factor, which seems to have governed the lake ecology. The salinity dynamics of the lake are governed by both freshwater inflows and seawater ingress through the new artificial lake mouth. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of Eucalyptus plantations on population and biochemistry parameters of 3 stream invertebrates. The shredder Echinogammarus spp. had significantly lower densities, proportion of adults and lower accumulation rates of mass, lipid, carbon and nitrogen in eucalypt sites than in native deciduous sites. For the shredder Sericostoma pyrenaicum (PICTET) similar densities were found in both site types, but mass accumulation rate was again lower in eucalypt sites than in the native ones. Contrastingly, density of the collector/grazer Habroleptoides confusa (S ARTORI and JACOB) was higher in eucalypt sites than in native sites and maximum body length and protein accumulation rate was better explained by soluble reactive phosphorus content in the water than with eucalypt cover.

We tested the effect of conditioning time of Pinus sylvestris litter on food consumption and growth of laboratory-reared Sericostoma vittatum larvae. In all cases, larval mass was positively correlated with consumption rates but negatively with growth rates and gross production efficiencies. Conditioning time (4, 8 or 30 weeks) had an effect on feeding rates: they were lowest for the least conditioned pine litter, but no effect of conditioning time on growth rates was observed. Contrary to previous reports on conifer litter use by aquatic detritivores, our results indicate that S.vittatum larvae were able to transform the highly refractory pine litter into secondary production even when it was conditioned for only 4 weeks.

We developed a stoichiometrically explicit computer model to examine how heterotrophic uptake of nutrients and microbial mineralization occurring during the decay of leaves in streams may be important in modifying nutrient concentrations. The simulations showed that microbial uptake can substantially decrease stream nutrient concentrations during the initial phases of decomposition, while mineralization may produce increases in concentrations during later stages of decomposition. The simulations also showed that initial nutrient content of the leaves can affect the stream nutrient concentration dynamics and determine whether nitrogen or phosphorus is the limiting nutrient. Finally, the simulations suggest a net retention (uptake > mineralization) of nutrients in headwater streams, which is balanced by export of particulate organic nutrients to downstream reaches. Published studies support the conclusion that uptake can substantially change stream nutrient concentrations. On the other hand, there is little published evidence that mineralization also affects nutrient concentrations. Also, there is little information on direct microbial utilization of nutrients contained in the decaying leaves themselves. Our results suggest several directions for research that will improve our understanding of the complex relationship between leaf decay and nutrient dynamics in streams.

We conducted a transplant experiment between two streams in NW Portugal impacted by agricultural runoff, mainly differing in phosphate concentration, to determine whether fungi on decomposing leaves would adapt to the new environment or would be replaced by fungi of the recipient stream. The most nutrient enriched stream had lower fungal diversity but faster leaf decomposition. Leaf transplantation did not alter fungal activity or species dominance. Multidimensional scaling ordination of fungal communities, from DNA fingerprint or conidial production, revealed that transplanted communities resembled more those of the original stream than the recipient stream. Results suggest that early fungal colonizers will determine the development and activity of fungal communities on decomposing leaves in streams impacted by agricultural practices., Portuguese Foundation for the Science and Technology (SFRH/BD/13482/2003)

A promising new method of marking larval freshwater fishes with enriched stable isotopes by means of injecting the maternal parent with the marking agent was investigated. The (138)Ba:(137)Ba ratios in the otoliths of larval golden perch Macquaria ambigua were compared to determine the effect of injecting female broodstock with different dosages of enriched (137)Ba at various times before spawning. There was 100% mark success in the progeny of fish injected with 20 microg g(-1) of enriched (137)Ba 24 h before inducing spawning with hormones and 40 microg g(-1) administered at the same time as inducement of spawning. Injection of 40 microg g(-1) enriched (137)Ba 21 days before spawning resulted in only 81% mark success and suggests rapid elimination of barium in M. ambigua. Injection with enriched (137)Ba did not significantly affect the fertilization rate, number of fertilized eggs or hatching rate compared with long-term hatchery records. These results suggest that transgenerational marking is an effective and affordable means of mass-marking larval fishes. Thousands of larval fishes can be permanently marked with a unique artificial isotopic mark via a single injection into the maternal parent, thus avoiding the handling of individual fishes or having to deal with chemical baths. Because no single mark or tagging method is suitable for all situations, transgenerational marking with enriched stable isotopes provides another method for researchers and managers to discriminate both hatchery-reared and wild fishes.

This study evaluates litter dynamics and its relation to macroinvertebrate communities (assemblages and feeding habits) at Piburja stream (3300 m, Ecuador). Annual litterfall (216 g AFDM/m 2 ) was not related to rainfall, but differed significantly between months. Transport of Coarse Particulate Organic Matter (CPOM) did not differ between seasons, but retention was higher during the dry season. Thus, CPOM standing stock was higher in the dry (125.28 g AFDM/m 2 ) compared to the wet season (12.27 g AFDM/m 2 ). Macroinvertebrate richness and diversity were positively related to Coarse Benthic Organic Matter (CBOM) especially during the wet season. Gut content analysis revealed that, regardless of season, CPOM and Fine Particulate Organic Matter (FPOM) were the most important food items in the diet of most invertebrate taxa, including those that are not considered shredders or gathering collectors in the literature.

Impacts of internal nutrient loading and the role of biota in phosphorus (P) dynamics were studied in a shallow, hypertrophic, biomanipulated lake. Reduced fish stock resulted in clearing water and the development of a dense submerged vegetation by 2005. However, an abrupt shift occurred in 2007, seven years after the fish manipulation. Simultaneously, water quality deteriorated which became obvious in elevated chlorophyll-a concentration in lake water, associated with increased biomass of fish and decay of a previously extended macrophyte cover. There were no significant differences in lake water P concentrations between the two periods (2005–2006 and 2007); however, peaks of different P forms were markedly higher in 2007 than in 2005–2006. At the same time, P content of sediment pore water declined considerably in 2007. Our mesocosm experiment, carried out in the manipulated lake, emphasize the positive role of the dominant fish species (roach) in P regeneration. We suggest that fish manipulation should be carried out every 5 year to maintain clear water conditions permanent, until the total removal of redundant nutrients accumulated in the lake ecosystem. The spatial distribution of zooplankton in relation to two types of land-use (forested and pastoral-arable) of a lake's surroundings and to various habitats (helophytes, elodeids, nymphaeids and open water) was examined along 16 parallel transects on a macrophyte-dominated lake (area – 13.3 ha; mean depth – 1.4 m). The type of habitat was the main determinant of zooplankton community structure. Dissected-leaved elodeids harboured the richest and most abundant community with typically littoral (e.g., Colurella uncinata) and pelagic species (e.g., Keratella cochlearis). Two species (Polyarthra major and P. vulgaris) selectively chose the open water and one (Lecane quadridentata) the Typha stand. No spatial differentiation in zooplankton abundance was recorded between the two types of the catchment area. Aspects of the biology of Gammarus aequicauda were studied at extremely low salinities (0.3–5.7 psu) in Monolimni Lagoon, N. Aegean Sea. Samples were collected monthly from February 1998 to February 1999. Breeding occurred continuously but peaked in late spring, late summer and autumn and three cohorts were produced. The spring and summer cohorts showed fast growth (0.15 mm d–1), accelerated maturity and life span of about three and seven months respectively, while the overwintering cohort showed a life span of about nine months. The largest individual had a body length of 23.6 mm. Mean brood size was 54.5 early embryos, while the intramarsupial loss was 46%. Population density sharply increased in late spring, summer and autumn. Secondary production calculated by Hynes' method gave a mean annual density of 1077.4 ind. m–2, a mean annual crop (B) of 2.93 g DW m–2, an annual production (P) of 35.03 g DW m–2 and a P: B ratio of 11.96. Gammarus aequicauda showed a life-history pattern similar to those previously reported for this species at higher salinity environments with comparatively large final body length and high growth rate during summer, brood size and P: B ratio, but with high embryo loss as well. Zooplankton seasonal and inter-annual dynamics were investigated in two neighbouring sand-pit lakes with similar morphological features but different exploitation regime. We hypothesized that the dredging activities affected the zooplankton communities and the hydrochemical conditions of the studied lakes. Significant differences in zooplankton abundance were found. The analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) revealed that plankton communities were different between lakes and that the microcrustaceans largely contributed to the average dissimilarity. In particular, the lower densities of cladocerans and the presence of large-size species in the lake still under dredging during this study appeared to be related to the resuspension of sand in the water column. We report how the zooplankton communities evolved toward an higher taxonomical and functional diversity after conclusion of the dredging activities.

We examined the effects of longitudinal discontinuity in small rivers, produced by the construction of small dams, on the macroinvertebrate communities in a biological reserve in southeastern Brazil. Two regulated streams were sampled in the rainy and dry seasons at three sites along the river. One site was upstream of the dam/abstraction and two were below the dam. Our results indicate that there was a difference in the communities between the dry and rainy periods even though water physicochemical parameters of the water were not significantly different. The biotic richness at sites 500 m below the dam were similar to those above the impoundment (control), indicating that the fauna recovered when the discharge values found before water abstraction were reestablished. We concluded that the dam did induce changes in the composition of benthic comunities, especially in the dry period. However, overall, the fauna seemed to be able to persist during periods when the flow was absent.

Decomposition of Juglans regia leaves was studied in fine and coarse mesh bags in a permanent mountain stream in Oman. A rapid initial mass loss, attributed to leaching, was followed by a more gradual decline. Daily exponential decay rates (k) calculated over 32 days were 0.011 (fine mesh litter bags) and 0.014 (coarse mesh litter bags). The difference between bag types was not significant, suggesting limited impact of leaf-shredding invertebrates. Ergosterol levels on leaves from fine mesh bags peaked at 0.3 mg g–1 AFDM after 16 days of stream exposure. During the experimental period, which followed the annual leaf fall, the concentration of aquatic hyphomycete conidia in the stream varied between 82 and 1362 l–1. Based on the morphology of conidia found in the water column or released from leaves, we identified 14 species of aquatic hyphomycetes. Tetracladium apiense was the most common taxon (62.2% of conidia in water column during the field experiment). Three other Tetracladium species contributed another 8%. Plating out leaf particles yielded common epiphytic taxa such as Alternaria sp., Aureobasidium pullulans and Phoma sp. The measured metrics of leaf decay in this desert stream fall within the range of values observed in temperate and tropical streams, with clear evidence for an early leaching phase, and no evidence of a strong impact of leaf shredders. The nymphal biology (life cycle, secondary production and feeding) of a population of Protonemura intricata was studied in a calcareous stream with almost constant temperature (7–8 °C) through the year at Prosiek valley (Chocske Vrchy Mts., West Carpathians, Slovakia). The results were compared with those previously known for this species in other areas. According to our data, the species has a complicated life cycle consisting of two cohorts with different duration (probably a cohort splitting). This life cycle seems to be uncommon among the Plecoptera, which usually has simple univoltine or semivoltine life cycles, and could be probably attributed to the constant temperature regime similar to that of tropical environments. One factor, the photoperiod length, was positively correlated with monthly growth rates. The nymphal growth varied throughout the year, but the highest growth was in late spring and summer, and the lowest was in winter. The annual secondary production was very high (909.4 mg · m–2) despite not being the most frequent taxon in the stream. The highest monthly production values were observed in the autumnal-winter period (November–December) due to massive hatching of nymphs. The lowest production values were observed in late summer and early autumn. Analyses of gut contents showed that this species behaves mainly as gatherer-collector, but also as shredder and, occasionally, as scraper. Changes in the gut content composition were detected in relation to the size. Comparing our results with those of the literature, it can be inferred that different populations of P. intricata can show notable differences in their life history when inhabiting places with different thermal conditions.
