Abstract The release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in cell cultures as well as their molecular cargo can be influenced by cell culture conditions such as the presence of foetal bovine serum (FBS). Although several studies have evaluated the effect of removing FBS‐derived EVs by ultracentrifugation (UC), less is known about the influence of FBS heat inactivation (HI) on the cell‐derived EVs. To assess this, three protocols based on different combinations of EV depletion by UC and HI were evaluated, including FBS ultracentrifuged but not heat inactivated (no‐HI FBS), FBS heat inactivated before EV depletion (HI‐before EV‐depl FBS), and FBS heat inactivated after EV depletion (HI‐after EV‐depl FBS). We isolated large (L‐EVs) and small EVs (S‐EVs) from FBS treated in the three different ways, and we found that the S‐EV pellet from HI‐after EV‐depl FBS was larger than the S‐EV pellet from no‐HI FBS and HI‐before EV‐depl FBS. Transmission electron microscopy, protein quantification, and particle number evaluation showed that HI‐after EV‐depl significantly increased the protein amount of S‐EVs but had no significant effect on L‐EVs. Consequently, the protein quantity of S‐EVs isolated from three cell lines cultured in media supplemented with HI‐after EV‐depl FBS was significantly increased. Quantitative mass spectrometry analysis of FBS‐derived S‐EVs showed that the EV protein content was different when FBS was HI after EV depletion compared to EVs isolated from no‐HI FBS and HI‐before EV‐depl FBS. Moreover, we show that several quantified proteins could be ascribed to human origin, thus demonstrating that FBS bovine proteins can mistakenly be attributed to human cell‐derived EVs. We conclude that HI of FBS performed after EV depletion results in changes in the proteome, with molecules that co‐isolate with EVs and can contaminate EVs when used in subsequent cell cultures. Our recommendation is, therefore, to always perform HI of FBS prior to EV depletion.

Slow motion replay and spatial zooming are special effects used in digital video rendering. At present, most techniques to perform digital spatial zoom and slow motion are based on interpolation for both enlarging the size of the original pictures and generating additional intermediate frames. Mainly, interpolation is done either by linear or cubic spline functions or by motion estimation/compensation which both can be applied pixel by pixel, or by partitioning frames into blocks. Purpose of this paper is to present an alternative technique combining fractals theory and wavelet decomposition to achieve spatial zoom and slow motion replay of HD digital color video sequences. Fast scene change detection, active scene detection, wavelet subband analysis, and color fractal coding based on Earth Mover's Distance (EMD) measure are used to reduce computational load and to improve visual quality. Experiments show that the proposed scheme achieves better results in terms of overall visual quality compared to the state-of-the-art techniques.

Abstract Aims We report the results of a real‐world study based on heart failure (HF) patients' continuous remote monitoring strategy using the CardioMEMS system to assess the impact of this device on healthcare outcomes, costs, and patients' management and quality of life. Methods and results We enrolled seven patients (69.00 ± 4.88 years; 71.43% men) with HF, implanted with CardioMEMS, and daily remote monitored to optimize both tailored adjustments of home therapy and/or hospital infusions of levosimendan. We recorded clinical, pharmacological, biochemical, and echocardiographic parameters and data on hospitalizations, emergency room access, visits, and costs. Following the implantation of CardioMEMS, we observed a 50% reduction in the total number of hospitalizations and a 68.7% reduction in the number of days in the hospital. Accordingly, improved patient quality of life was recorded with EQ‐5D (pre 58.57 ± 10.29 vs. 1 year post 84.29 ± 19.02, P = 0.008). Echocardiographic data show a statistically significant improvement in both systolic pulmonary artery pressure (47.86 ± 8.67 vs. 35.14 ± 9.34, P = 0.022) and E/e′ (19.33 ± 5.04 vs. 12.58 ± 3.53, P = 0.023). The Quantikine® HS High‐Sensitivity Kit determined elevated interleukin‐6 values at enrolment in all patients, with a statistically significant reduction after 6 months (P = 0.0211). From an economic point of view, the net savings, including the cost of CardioMEMS, were on average €1580 per patient during the entire period of observation, while the analysis performed 12 months after the implant vs. 12 months before showed a net saving of €860 per patient. The ad hoc analysis performed on the levosimendan infusions resulted in 315 days of hospital avoidance and a saving of €205 158 for the seven patients enrolled during the observation period. Conclusions This innovative strategy prevents unplanned access to the hospital and contributes to the efficient use of healthcare facilities, human resources, and costs.

Abstract In numerous carbonate reservoirs in the Middle East, peloidal packstone‐grainstones are rock types with excellent pore storage potential in micritised microporous grains. However, the origin of the micro‐porosity and associated micro‐spar remains unclear, and one hypothesis is that both micro‐spar and porosity originate from early marine micritisation and were later altered during subsequent diagenesis (i.e. cementation recrystallisation). The south‐eastern coast of the Arabian Gulf is recognised as a modern, albeit miniature, depositional setting analogue to Mesozoic carbonate sequences that form the supergiant reservoirs of the Middle East. Using optical microscopy, backscattered scanning electron microscopy and carbon and oxygen stable isotope analysis the present study aims to document the nature of internal microstructures of micritic envelopes and peloids from the surface sediments of various sub‐environments of the Abu Dhabi Lagoon. Results highlight a high degree of diversity and heterogeneities of most micritic envelopes and peloids observed across the sub‐environments. First, carbonate grains from ooid and bioclastic shoals show the simpler micritic envelopes. Here, micritic envelopes and peloids show sparse microborings filled with banded radial aragonite cement, a pattern of production of cryptocrystalline texture (e.g. micritisation) that is similar to the sequence of micritisation observed in the modern sediment of the Great Bahama Bank. Conversely, in the subtidal and intertidal zones with mangroves or seagrass, the micritic envelopes and peloids are much more complex and show multiple generations of microborings that are either empty or filled with carbonate materials of varying types (i.e. various cements, fragments, etc.).

Abstract By providing adaptive advantages to plants, desert microorganisms are emerging as promising solutions to mitigate the negative and abrupt effects of climate change in agriculture. Among these, pseudomonads, commonly found in soil and in association with plants' root system, have been shown to enhance plant tolerance to salinity and drought, primarily affecting root system architecture in various hosts. However, a comprehensive understanding of how these bacteria affect plant responses at the cellular, physiological and molecular levels is still lacking. In this study, we investigated the effects of two Pseudomonas spp. strains, E102 and E141, which were previously isolated from date palm roots and have demonstrated efficacy in promoting drought tolerance in their hosts. These strains colonize plant roots, influencing root architecture by inhibiting primary root growth while promoting root hair elongation and lateral root formation. Strains E102 and E141 increased auxin levels in Arabidopsis, whereas this effect was diminished in IAA‐defective mutant strains, which exhibited reduced IAA production. In all cases, the effectiveness of the bacteria relies on the functioning of the plant auxin response and transport machinery. Notably, such physiological and morphological changes provide an adaptive advantage to the plant, specifically under stress conditions such as salinity. Collectively, this study demonstrates that by leveraging the host's auxin signalling machinery, strains E102 and E141 significantly improve plant resilience to abiotic stresses, positioning them as potential biopromoters/bioprotectors for crop production and ecosystem restoration in alignment with Nature‐based Solution approaches.

Abstract Belantamab mafodotin is the first‐in‐class antibody‐drug conjugates targeting B‐cell maturation antigen to have demonstrated effectiveness in triple‐class refractory multiple myeloma (TCR‐MM) patients. We performed a retrospective study including 78 TCR patients, with at least four prior lines of therapy (LOTs), who received belantamab mafodotin within named patient program and expanded access program in Italy between 2020 and 2022. Median age was 65 years (range 42–86 years), ECOG performance status was ≥1 in 45% of patients. Overall, a clinical benefit was obtained in 36 out of 74 evaluable patients (49%), with 43%, 28%, and 13.5% achieving at least partial response, very good partial response, and complete response, respectively. After a median follow‐up of 12 months (range 6–21 months), median duration of response, progression‐free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were 14, 5.5, and 12 months, respectively. Age >70 years, good performance status and response were associated with longer PFS and OS. Keratopathy occurred in 58% of patients (G3 2.5%), corneal symptoms in 32% (G3 1.2%) and a reduction in visual acuity in 14%. Grade 3 thrombocytopenia occurred in 9% of patients. Only 3% of patients discontinued belantamab mafodotin because of side effects. This real‐life study demonstrated significant and durable responses of belantamab in TCR‐MM patients with four prior LOTs, otherwise ineligible for novel immunotherapies.

Abstract The paper analyzes how to improve the teaching of Operational Research, focusing on distance learning courses where professors and students are separated through space and time. This case study was done in a public Industrial Engineering undergraduate course, and the work structure is divided into three main parts: an exploratory‐descriptive documentary analysis, application of free software, and evaluation of learning. The authors showed the feasibility of using the SageMath tool in the teaching‐learning process. The study revealed the importance of developing alternative solutions to educational realities marked by economic and financial constraints, where structure teaching with free software is a ruling factor once Engineering education is not a similar global event everywhere. Distance learning is a phenomenon that has been growing over the last 20 years in Brazil, but this was one of the first experiences with the use of SageMath. So, it can serve as a reference for countries with socioeconomic conditions similar to Brazil. Also, this case study can help other professors to enhance their teaching in a distance learning context even in scarcity scenarios of educational resources. The software implementation would be justified in part of the groups studied.

Most in vitro studies regarding new anticancer treatments are performed on 2D cultures, despite this approach imposes several limitations in recapitulating the real tumor behavior and in predicting the effects of therapy on both cancer and healthy tissues. Herein, advanced in vitro models based on scaffolds that support the 3D growth of glioma cells, further allowing the cocultures with healthy brain cells, are presented. These scaffolds, doped with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and obtained through 2‐photon polymerization, can be remotely manipulated thanks to an external magnet, thus obtaining biomimetic 3D organization recapitulating the brain cancer microenvironment. From a geometric point of view, the structure is functional to both cell culture on individual unit scaffolds and to tailored cocultures fostered by magnetic‐driven unit assembly, also allowing for cell migration thanks to passages/fenestrations on adjacent structures. Leveraging magnetic dragging, for which a mathematical model is introduced, multiple cocultures are achieved, highlighting the high versatility and the user‐friendly character of the proposed platform that can help overcome the current challenges in 3D cocultures handling, and open the way to the construction of increasingly biomimetic artificial systems.

Abstract Background Glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is an X‐linked recessive disorder that predisposes individuals to hemolysis due to an inborn error of metabolism. We performed a systematic literature review to evaluate G6PD deficiency as a possible etiology of nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) and severe fetal anemia. Methods PubMed, OVID Medline, Scopus, and clinicaltrials.gov were queried from inception until 31 April 2023 for all published cases of NIHF and severe fetal anemia caused by G6PD deficiency. Keywords included “fetal edema,” “hydrops fetalis,” “glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency,” and “fetal anemia.” Cases with workup presuming G6PD deficiency as an etiology for NIHF and severe fetal anemia were included. PRISMA guidelines were followed. Results Five cases of G6PD‐related NIHF and one case of severe fetal anemia were identified. Four fetuses (4/6, 66.7%) were male and two fetuses (2/6, 33.3%) were female. Mean gestational age at diagnosis of NIHF/anemia and delivery was 32.2 ± 4.9 and 35.7 ± 2.4 weeks, respectively. Four cases (66.7%) required a cordocentesis for fetal transfusion, and two cases (33.3%) received blood transfusions immediately following delivery. Among the four multigravida cases, two (50%) noted previous pregnancies complicated by neonatal anemia. When reported, the maternal cases included two G6PD deficiency carrier patients and two G6PD‐deficient patients. Exposures to substances known to cause G6PD deficiency‐related hemolysis occurred in 3/6 (50%) cases. Conclusion Six cases of NIHF/severe fetal anemia were associated with G6PD deficiency. While G6PD deficiency is an X‐linked recessive condition, female fetuses can be affected. Fetal G6PD deficiency testing can be considered if parental history indicates, particularly if the standard workup for NIHF is negative.

Abstract Salt marshes occur globally across climatic and coastal settings, providing key linkages between terrestrial and marine ecosystems. However, salt marsh science lacks a unifying conceptual framework; consequently, historically well‐studied locations have been used as normative benchmarks. To allow for more effective comparisons across the diversity of salt marshes, we developed an integrative salt marsh conceptual framework. We review ecosystem‐relevant drivers from global to local spatial scales, integrate these multi‐scale settings into a framework, and provide guidance on applying the framework using specific variables on 11 global examples. Overall, this framework allows for appropriate comparison of study sites by accounting for global, coastal, inter‐, and intra‐system spatial settings unique to each salt marsh. We anticipate that incorporating this framework into salt marsh science will provide a mechanism to critically evaluate research questions and a foundation for effective quantitative studies that deepen our understanding of salt marsh function across spatial scales.

Abstract Habitat suitability models infer the geographical distribution of species using occurrence data and environmental variables. While data on species presence are increasingly accessible, the difficulty of confirming real absences in the field often forces researchers to generate them in silico. To this aim, pseudo‐absences are commonly sampled randomly across the study area (i.e. the geographical space). However, this introduces sample location bias (i.e. the sampling is unbalanced towards the most frequent habitats occurring within the geographical space) and favours class overlap (i.e. overlap between environmental conditions associated with species presences and pseudo‐absences) in the training dataset. To mitigate this, we propose an alternative methodology (i.e. the uniform approach) that systematically samples pseudo‐absences within a portion of the environmental space delimited by a kernel‐based filter, which seeks to minimise the number of false absences included in the training dataset. We simulated 50 virtual species and modelled their distribution using training datasets assembled with the presence points of the virtual species and pseudo‐absences collected using the uniform approach and other approaches that randomly sample pseudo‐absences within the geographical space. We compared the predictive performance of habitat suitability models and evaluated the extent of sample location bias and class overlap associated with the different sampling strategies. Results indicated that the uniform approach: (i) effectively reduces sample location bias and class overlap; (ii) provides comparable predictive performance to sampling strategies carried out in the geographical space; and (iii) ensures gathering pseudo‐absences adequately representing the environmental conditions available across the study area. We developed a set of R functions in an accompanying R package called USE to disseminate the uniform approach.

Abstract Estimating demographic parameters for wide‐ranging and elusive species living at low density is challenging, especially at the scale of an entire country. To produce wolf distribution and abundance estimates for the whole south‐central portion of the Italian wolf population, we developed an integrated spatial model, based on the data collected during a 7‐month sampling campaign in 2020–2021. Data collection comprised an extensive survey of wolf presence signs, and an intensive survey in 13 sampling areas, aimed at collecting non‐invasive genetic samples (NGS). The model comprised (i) a single‐season, multiple data‐source, multi‐event occupancy model and (ii) a spatially explicit capture‐recapture model. The information about species' absence was used to inform local density estimates. We also performed a simulation‐based assessment, to estimate the best conditions for optimizing sub‐sampling and population modelling in the future. The integrated spatial model estimated that 74.2% of the study area in south‐central Italy (95% CIs = 70.5% to 77.9%) was occupied by wolves, for a total extent of the wolf distribution of 108,534 km2 (95% CIs = 103,200 to 114,000). The estimate of total population size for the Apennine wolf population was of 2557 individuals (SD = 171.5; 95% CIs = 2127 to 2844). Simulations suggested that the integrated spatial model was associated with an average tendency to slightly underestimate population size. Also, the main contribution of the integrated approach was to increase precision in the abundance estimates, whereas it did not affect accuracy significantly. In the future, the area subject to NGS should be increased to at least 30%, while at least a similar proportion should be sampled for presence‐absence data, to further improve the accuracy of population size estimates and avoid the risk of underestimation. This approach could be applied to other wide‐ranging species and in other geographical areas, but specific a priori evaluations of model requirements and expected performance should be made.

Abstract In the relentless battle for human health, the proliferation of antibiotic‐resistant bacteria has emerged as an impending catastrophe of unprecedented magnitude, potentially driving humanity towards the brink of an unparalleled healthcare crisis. The unyielding advance of antibiotic resistance looms as the foremost threat of the 21st century in clinical, agricultural and environmental arenas. Antibiotic resistance is projected to be the genesis of the next global pandemic, with grim estimations of tens of millions of lives lost annually by 2050. Amidst this impending calamity, our capacity to unearth novel antibiotics has languished, with the past four decades marred by a disheartening ‘antibiotic discovery void’. With nearly 80% of our current antibiotics originating from natural or semi‐synthetic sources, our responsibility is to cast our investigative nets into uncharted ecological niches teeming with microbial strife, the so‐called ‘microbial oases of interactions’. Within these oases of interactions, where microorganisms intensively compete for space and nutrients, a dynamic and ever‐evolving microbial ‘arms race’ is constantly in place. Such a continuous cycle of adaptation and counter‐adaptation is a fundamental aspect of microbial ecology and evolution, as well as the secrets to unique, undiscovered antibiotics, our last bastion against the relentless tide of resistance. In this context, it is imperative to invest in research to explore the competitive realms, like the plant rhizosphere, biological soil crusts, deep sea hydrothermal vents, marine snow and the most modern plastisphere, in which competitive interactions are at the base of the microorganisms' struggle for survival and dominance in their ecosystems: identify novel antibiotic by targeting microbial oases of interactions could represent a ‘missing piece of the puzzle’ in our fight against antibiotic resistance.

Abstract Our planet teeters on the brink of massive ecosystem collapses, and arid regions experience manifold environmental and climatic challenges that increase the magnitude of selective pressures on already stressed ecosystems. Ultimately, this leads to their aridification and desertification, that is, to simplified and barren ecosystems (with proportionally less microbial load and diversity) with altered functions and food webs and modification of microbial community network. Thus, preserving and restoring soil health in such a fragile biome could help buffer climate change's effects. We argue that microorganisms and the protection of their functional properties and networks are key to fight desertification. Specifically, we claim that it is rational, possible and certainly practical to rely on native dryland edaphic microorganisms and microbial communities as well as dryland plants and their associated microbiota to conserve and restore soil health and mitigate soil depletion in newly aridified lands. Furthermore, this will meet the objective of protecting/stabilizing (and even enhancing) soil biodiversity globally. Without urgent conservation and restoration actions that take into account microbial diversity, we will ultimately, and simply, not have anything to protect anymore.

Abstract Globally, soils and sediments are affected by the bioturbation activities of benthic species. The consequences of these activities are particularly impactful in intertidal sediment, which is generally anoxic and nutrient‐poor. Mangrove intertidal sediments are of particular interest because, as the most productive forests and one of the most important stores of blue carbon, they provide global‐scale ecosystem services. The mangrove sediment microbiome is fundamental for ecosystem functioning, influencing the efficiency of nutrient cycling and the abundance and distribution of key biological elements. Redox reactions in bioturbated sediment can be extremely complex, with one reaction creating a cascade effect on the succession of respiration pathways. This facilitates the overlap of different respiratory metabolisms important in the element cycles of the mangrove sediment, including carbon, nitrogen, sulphur and iron cycles, among others. Considering that all ecological functions and services provided by mangrove environments involve microorganisms, this work reviews the microbial roles in nutrient cycling in relation to bioturbation by animals and plants, the main mangrove ecosystem engineers. We highlight the diversity of bioturbating organisms and explore the diversity, dynamics and functions of the sediment microbiome, considering both the impacts of bioturbation. Finally, we review the growing evidence that bioturbation, through altering the sediment microbiome and environment, determining a ‘halo effect’, can ameliorate conditions for plant growth, highlighting the potential of the mangrove microbiome as a nature‐based solution to sustain mangrove development and support the role of this ecosystem to deliver essential ecological services.

Abstract The possibility to engineer (GeTe)m(Sb2Te3)n phase‐change materials to co‐host ferroelectricity is extremely attractive. The combination of these functionalities holds great technological impact, potentially enabling the design of novel multifunctional devices. Here an experimental and theoretical study of epitaxial (GeTe)m(Sb2Te3)n with GeTe‐rich composition is presented. These layered films feature a tunable distribution of (GeTe)m(Sb2Te3)1 blocks of different sizes. Breakthrough evidence of ferroelectric displacement in thick (GeTe)m(Sb2Te3)1 lamellae is provided. The density functional theory calculations suggest the formation of a tilted (GeTe)m slab sandwiched in GeTe‐rich blocks. That is, the net ferroelectric polarization is confined almost in‐plane, representing an unprecedented case between 2D and bulk ferroelectric materials. The ferroelectric behavior is confirmed by piezoresponse force microscopy and electroresistive measurements. The resilience of the quasi van der Waals character of the films, regardless of their composition, is also demonstrated. Hence, the material developed hereby gathers in a unique 2D platform the phase‐change and ferroelectric switching properties, paving the way for the conception of innovative device architectures.

The use of babassu agro-industrial residues in animal feed, in addition to being an economic option of great importance in reducing the environmental impact in regions of the Brazilian Cerrado, provides the production of good quality foods of animal origin due to its nutritional characteristics. However, information related to the nutritional components of babassu by-industrial residues has not yet been sufficiently explored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional potential of some by-products from the babassu production chain through chemical composition and in situ degradability analyses. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized experimental design, with 4 by-products from babassu processing (cake, greasy, fine flour, and 95 µm flour) and 5 replications. The by-products differ in terms of chemical composition, except for the hemicellulose content. For the degradability of fraction “a” of dry matter, it presented a higher percentage for 95 µm flour. Fine flour and 95 µm flour presented the highest fractions “b” and “c,” potential, and effective degradability of dry matter. For the degradation of crude protein, the highest percentages of potential and effective degradability were observed for greasy and 95 µm flour. The highest standardized potentially degradable fraction and the highest passage rate were obtained by 95 µm flour, which also showed greater degradation for dry matter, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber. Among the by-products studied, the babassu cake has superior chemical composition; however, the 95 µm flour presented nutritional value and satisfactory rumen degradation to be used as an additive or in partial replacement of traditional concentrates.

Abstract Morphological transformation of surface structures is widely manifested in nature and highly preferred for many applications such as wetting interaction; however, in situ tuning of artificial morphologies independent of smart responsive materials remains elusive. Here, with the aid of microfluidics, we develop a pneumatic programmable superrepellent surface by tailoring conventional wetting materials (e.g., polydimethylsiloxane) with embedded flexible chambers connecting a microfluidic system, thus realizing a morphological transformation for enhanced liquid repellency based on a nature‐inspired rigid‐flexible hybrid principle (i.e., triggering symmetry breaking and oscillator coupling mechanisms). The enhancement degree can be in situ tuned within around 300 ms owing to pneumatically controllable chamber morphologies. We also demonstrate that the surface can be freely programmed to achieve elaborated morphological pathways and gradients for preferred droplet manipulation such as directional rolling and bouncing. Our study highlights the potential of an in situ morphological transformation to realize tunable wettability and provides a programmable level of droplet control by intellectualizing conventional wetting materials.

Abstract The increasing sophistication of wind turbine design and control generates a need for high‐quality wind data. The relatively limited set of available measured wind data may be extended with computer generated data, for example, to make reliable statistical studies of energy production and mechanical loads. Here, a data‐driven model for the generation of surrogate wind speeds is compared with two state‐of‐the‐art time series models that can capture the probability distribution and the autocorrelation of the target wind data. The proposed model, based on the phase‐randomised Fourier transform, can generate wind speed time series that possess the power spectral density of the target data and converge to their generally non‐Gaussian probability distribution with an arbitrary, user‐defined precision. The model performance is benchmarked in terms of probability distribution, power spectral density, autocorrelation, and nonstationarities such as the diurnal and seasonal variations of the target data. Comparisons show that the proposed model can outperform the selected models in reproducing the statistical descriptors of the input datasets and is able to capture the nonstationary diurnal and seasonal variations of the wind speed.

Abstract Breast cancer cell colonization of the lungs is associated with a dismal prognosis as the distributed nature of the disease and poor permeability of the metastatic foci challenge the therapeutic efficacy of small molecules, antibodies, and nanomedicines. Taking advantage of the unique physiology of the pulmonary circulation, here, micro‐combinatorial hydrogel particles (µCGP) are realized via soft lithographic techniques to enhance the specific delivery of a cocktail of cytotoxic nanoparticles to metastatic foci. By cross‐linking short poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chains with erodible linkers within a shape‐defining template, a deformable and biodegradable polymeric skeleton is realized and loaded with a variety of therapeutic and imaging agents, including docetaxel‐nanoparticles. In a model of advanced breast cancer lung metastasis, µCGP amplified the colocalization of docetaxel‐nanoparticles with pulmonary metastatic foci, prolonged the retention of chemotoxic molecules at the diseased site, suppressed lesion growth, and boosted survival beyond 20 weeks post nodule engraftment. The flexible design and modular architecture of µCGP would allow the efficient deployment of complex combination therapies in other vascular districts too, possibly addressing metastatic diseases of different origins.

Abstract Concerted efforts are underway to establish an infrastructure for a global quantum Internet to realise a spectrum of quantum technologies. This will enable more precise sensors, secure communications, and faster data processing. Quantum communications are a front‐runner with quantum networks already implemented in several metropolitan areas. A number of recent proposals have modelled the use of space segments to overcome range limitations of purely terrestrial networks. Rapid progress in the design of quantum devices have enabled their deployment in space for in‐orbit demonstrations. We review developments in this emerging area of space‐based quantum technologies and provide a roadmap of key milestones towards a complete, global quantum networked landscape. Small satellites hold increasing promise to provide a cost effective coverage required to realise the quantum Internet. The state of art in small satellite missions is reviewed and the most current in‐field demonstrations of quantum cryptography are collated. The important challenges in space quantum technologies that must be overcome and recent efforts to mitigate their effects are summarised. A perspective on future developments that would improve the performance of space quantum communications is included. The authors conclude with a discussion on fundamental physics experiments that could take advantage of a global, space‐based quantum network.

Abstract Introduction Mammography is one of the most technically demanding radiographic processes, and mammography quality assurance initiatives are priorities in the implementation of public health screening services. In the optimisation of image quality (IQ), radiographers play a major role. Between 1998 and 2009, the steering committee for mammography of a large population‐based screening service in northern Italy undertook several audit checks of the imaging facilities. In 2009, the target age range of the screening service was extended. The mammogram volume was projected to increase steeply but with no substantial increase in the radiographer workforce. Methods In view of the potential impact on mammographic IQ, the passive audit approach was abandoned in favour of an active radiographer‐oriented IQ review programme. Its technical basis consists of regularly repeated rounds of review of random samples of digital mammograms performed by each first‐level radiographer and by more experienced local reference radiographers, with IQ classification, followed by a training effort and a monitoring work. Results The mammogram volume grew from 140,822 in 2008 to 319,394 in 2014 (+127%) and then stabilised. In 2012, the proportion of mammograms with a poor IQ rose from 0.6% to 19.3%, paralleled by a substantial decrease of mammograms interpreted to have a moderate and perfect IQ. Conversely, a generalised improvement occurred in both rounds of 2016 and in the first round of 2018. Conclusion In the new challenging scenario, the programme proved to be effective. A successful IQ review initiative is one that encourages radiographers to participate with a positive and confident attitude.

Abstract Wetting is often perceived as an intrinsic surface property of materials, but determining its evolution is complicated by its complex dependence on roughness across the scales. The Wenzel (W) state, where liquids have intimate contact with the rough surfaces, and the Cassie–Baxter (CB) state, where liquids sit onto air pockets formed between asperities, are only two states among the plethora of wetting behaviors. Furthermore, transitions from the CB to the Wenzel state dictate completely different surface performance, such as anti‐contamination, anti‐icing, drag reduction etc.; however, little is known about how transition occurs during time between the several wetting modes. In this paper, wetting dynamics can be accurately quantified and tracked using solid–liquid triboelectrification. Theoretical underpinning reveals how surface micro‐/nano‐geometries regulate stability/infiltration, also demonstrating the generality of the authors’ theoretical approach in understanding wetting transitions. It can clarify the functioning behavior of materials in real environment.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) patients with cardiac injury have an increased risk of mortality. It remains to be determined the mechanism of cardiac injury and the identification of specific conditions that affect the heart during COVID‐19. We present the case of a 76‐year‐old woman with COVID‐19 pneumonia that developed a takotsubo syndrome (TTS). Although the patient presented normal left ventricular ejection fraction and normal levels of troponin on admission, after 16 days in intensive care unit due to respiratory distress, she suddenly developed cardiogenic shock. Shock occurred few hours after a spontaneous breathing trial through her tracheostomy. Bed‐side echocardiographic revealed apical ballooning promptly supporting the diagnosis of TTS. She was successfully treated with deep sedation and low dosage of epinephrine. The relevance of this case is that TTS can occur in the late phase of COVID‐19. Awareness of late TTS and bed‐side echocardiographic evaluation can lead to prompt identification and treatment.

Abstract Ocean circulation, geological history, geographic distance, and seascape heterogeneity play an important role in phylogeography of coral‐dependent fishes. Here, we investigate potential genetic population structure within the yellowbar angelfish (Pomacanthus maculosus) across the Northwestern Indian Ocean (NIO). We then discuss our results with respect to the above abiotic features in order to understand the contemporary distribution of genetic diversity of the species. To do so, restriction site‐associated DNA sequencing (RAD‐seq) was utilized to carry out population genetic analyses on P. maculosus sampled throughout the species’ distributional range. First, genetic data were correlated to geographic and environmental distances, and tested for isolation‐by‐distance and isolation‐by‐environment, respectively, by applying the Mantel test. Secondly, we used distance‐based and model‐based methods for clustering genetic data. Our results suggest the presence of two putative barriers to dispersal; one off the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula and the other off northern Somalia, which together create three genetic subdivisions of P. maculosus within the NIO. Around the Arabian Peninsula, one genetic cluster was associated with the Red Sea and the adjacent Gulf of Aden in the west, and another cluster was associated with the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman in the east. Individuals sampled in Kenya represented a third genetic cluster. The geographic locations of genetic discontinuities observed between genetic subdivisions coincide with the presence of substantial upwelling systems, as well as habitat discontinuity. Our findings shed light on the origin and maintenance of genetic patterns in a common coral reef fish inhabiting the NIO, and reinforce the hypothesis that the evolution of marine fish species in this region has likely been shaped by multiple vicariance events.
