The study of face alignment has been an area of intense research in computer vision, with its achievements widely used in computer graphics applications. The performance of various face alignment methods is often image-dependent or somewhat random because of their own strategy. This study aims to develop a method that can select an input image with good face alignment results from many results produced by a single method or multiple ones. The task is challenging because different face alignment results need to be evaluated without any ground truth. This study addresses this problem by designing a feasible feature extraction scheme to measure the quality of face alignment results. The feature is then used in various machine learning algorithms to rank different face alignment results. Our experiments show that our method is promising for ranking face alignment results and is able to pick good face alignment results, which can enhance the overall performance of a face alignment method with a random strategy. We demonstrate the usefulness of our ranking-enhanced face alignment algorithm in two practical applications: face cartoon stylization and digital face makeup.

Demulsifiers provide an important means of breaking water-in-crude oil, which are formed during crude oil exploitation. In present work, twenty polyether copolymers based on polyethyleneimine (PEI) were synthesized. The interfacial properties of the PEI polyethers at the water-crude oil interface were described by interfacial tension (IFT) and interfacial dilational modulus. The effects of position isomerism, size of intermediate and ratio of ethylene oxide (EO)/propylene oxide (PO) on the demulsification efficiency of these polyethers were studied. The results show that different positions of the EO and PO in copolymers lead to huge difference in both interfacial properties and demulsification performance. Polymers with hydrophilic core and hydrophobic tails (Ex-mn series) are not efficient on demulsification of water-in-oil emulsion whereas polymers with hydrophobic core and hydrophilic tails (Px-mn series) are. Meanwhile, Px-mn series show higher IFT and lower interfacial dilational modulus than Ex-mn series. In the same series, the IFT and interfacial dilational modulus decrease with decreasing EO/PO ratio. In the series with best demulsification performance (P199-mn series), 60 min water removal rates of the polymers increase with decreasing EO/PO ratio at 65°C. In other words, the longer the hydrophobic blocks of polymers, the stronger the demulsification capacity. In China and throughout the world, evaluation of the nutrient values of forages has always lagged behind research regarding the nutrient requirements of animals. In this study, the effective degradability and availability of forages were evaluated on undegraded and degraded grassland using a technique where nylon bags were incubated in sheep rumen. We found that the concentrations of organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC) and carbohydrates (CHO) of forage were higher (P < 0.05) and the crude protein (CP) concentration was lower (P < 0.05) in the degraded grassland than in the undegraded grassland. The effective degradability (ED) of NFC (ED(NFC) ) was higher (P < 0.05) and ED(CHO) and ED(NDF) were lower in the undegraded grassland than in the degraded grassland. The ED(OM) and ED(CP) were not affected by the type of grassland, which may explain why ED is an inadequate parameter for the evaluation of forage availability. According to an analysis of the ratio of effectively degraded N to OM and NFC, plants of the undegraded grassland can provide more digestive nutrients to meet the requirements of grazing animals compared to plants of the degraded grassland. Results suggested that it is inadequate to consider only chemical composition and effective degradability when evaluating forage availability with grassland degradation. The ratio of effectively degraded N to OM and NFC was an appropriate indicator.

Understanding the effects of dietary composition on methane (CH4) production of sheep can help us to understand grassland degradation resulting in an increase of CH4 emission from ruminant livestock and its resulting significance affecting CH4 source/sink in the grazing ecosystem. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of forage composition in the diet of sheep in July and August on CH4 production by sheep in the Inner Mongolia steppe. The four diet treatments were: (1) Leymus chinensis and Cleistogenes squarrosa (LC), (2) Leymus chinensis, Cleistogenes squarrosa and concentrate supplementation (LCC), (3) Artemisia frigida and Cleistogenes squarrosa (AC), and (4) Artemisia frigida, Cleistogenes squarrosa and concentrate supplementation (ACC). CH4 production was significantly lower in July than in August (31.4 and 36.2 g per sheep-unit per day, respectively). The daily average CH4 production per unit of digestive dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) increased by 10.9, 11.2 and 42.1% for the AC diet compared with the LC diet, respectively. Although concentrate supplementation in both the AC and LC diets increased total CH4 production per sheep per day, it improved sheep productivity and decreased CH4 production by 14.8, 12.5 and 14.8% per unit of DM, OM and NDF digested by the sheep, respectively. Our results suggested that in degraded grassland CH4 emission from sheep was increased and concentrate supplementation increased diet use efficiency. Sheep-grazing ecosystem seems to be a source of CH4 when the stocking rate is over 0.5 sheep-units ha−1 during the growing season in the Inner Mongolia steppe.

Selected clinicopathological features were compared between resting striped bass Morone saxatilis and palmetto bass (striped bass female × white bass M. chrysops male) and fish subjected to an acute (2-h-long) confinement stress. The taxa differed significantly in resting plasma lysozyme activities and leukocyte responses to mitogen stimulation. Confined fish of both taxa showed similar elevations in plasma osmolality, potassium, anion gap, creatinine, and glucose, suggesting a shock response. However, striped bass displayed slightly more severe perturbations, including elevated albumin and total protein, that indicated hemoconcentration. At least some of the intertaxon differences may have been associated with the greater ability of palmetto bass to adapt to culture conditions.
