Abstract: International audience; Cellular materials, in particular metal or polymer foams and beam lattices, are characterized by a complex architecture where the material is concentrated in slender struts. This study is concerned with the construction of numerically efficient samplespecific digital twin for the analysis and characterization of the mechanical behavior of such meta-materials. A method to build an explicit, light, and analysis-suitable isogeometric beam model directly from digital images is proposed. More precisely, as a main contribution, the Virtual Image Correlation method is extended to the case of multiple interconnected beams with varying cross-sections. Special care is also given to the initialization for better efficiency and robustness. Synthetic and real examples of increasing complexity, i.e. curved beams, lattices, and foams, are presented to account for the performance of the developed workflow from digital images to an isogeometric twin for mechanical modelling and simulation.

Abstract: Cuticle are multifunctional hydrophobic biocomposites that protect aerial organs of plants. Along plant development, plant cuticle must accommodate different mechanical constraints combining extensibility and stiffness, the corresponding structure-function relationships are unknown. Recent data showed a fine architectural tuning of the cuticle architecture and the corresponding chemical clusters along fruit development which raise the question of their impact on the mechanical properties of the cuticle.We investigated the in-depth nanomechanical properties of tomato fruit cuticle from early development to ripening, in relation to chemical and structural heterogeneities by developing a correlative multimodal imaging approach.Unprecedented sharps heterogeneities were evidenced with the highlighting of an in-depth mechanical gradient and a ‘soft’ central furrow that were maintained throughout the plant development despite the overall increase in elastic modulus. In addition, we demonstrated that these local mechanical areas are correlated to chemical and structural gradients.This study shed light on a fine tuning of mechanical properties of cuticle through the modulation of their architecture, providing new insight for our understanding of structure-function relationships of plant cuticle and for the design of biosinpired material.

Abstract: International audience; The management of migratory taxa relies on the knowledge of their movements. Among them, ontogenetic habitat shift, from nurseries to adult habitats, is a behavioural trait shared across marine taxa allowing resource partitioning between life stages and reducing predation risk. As this movement is consistent over time, characterizing its timing is critical to implement efficient management plans, notably in coastal areas to mitigate the impact of fisheries on juvenile stocks.In the Mexican Pacific, habitat use of the smooth hammerhead shark (Sphyrna zygaena) is poorly described, while the species is heavily harvested. Given the large uncertainties associated with the timing of out-migration from coastal nursery grounds to offshore waters prior to reproductive maturity, a more precise assessment of smooth hammerhead shark movements is needed.Photochemical degradation of mercury imparts mass-independent isotope fractionation (?Hg-199) which can be used to discriminate between neonate coastal shallow habitats and the offshore deep foraging patterns of late juveniles. Here, we present the application of muscle ?Hg-199 as molecular clocks to predict the timing of ontogenetic habitat shifts by smooth hammerhead sharks, based on their isotopic compositions at the initial and arrival habitats and on muscle isotopic turnover rate.We observed decreases in ?Hg-199 values with shark body length, reflecting increasing reliance on offshore mesopelagic prey with age. Coastal residency estimates indicated that smooth hammerhead sharks utilize coastal resources for 2 years prior to offshore migration, suggesting a prolonged residency in these ecosystems.Policy implications. This study demonstrates how mercury stable isotopes and isotopic clocks can be implemented as a complementary tool for stock management by predicting the timing of animal migration-a key aspect in the conservation of marine taxa. In the Mexican Pacific, fishing pressure on shark species occurs in coastal habitats depleting juvenile stocks. Consequently, management decision support tools are imperative for effectively maintaining early life stage population levels over time. The finding that smooth hammerhead sharks extensively rely on highly fished habitats for 2 years after parturition supports the relevance of establishing a size limit in coastal fisheries and demonstrates how the current temporal shark fishing closure could lack efficiency for the species.

Abstract: International audience; Recent studies have highlighted associations between diseases and host microbiota. It is yet extremely challenging-especially under natural conditions-to clarify whether the host microbiota promotes future infections, or whether changes in host microbiota result from infections. Nonetheless, deciphering between these two processes is essential for highlighting the role of microbes in disease progression. We longitudinally surveyed, in the wild, the microbiota of individual fish hosts (Leuciscus burdigalensis) both before and after infection by a crustacean ectoparasite (Tracheliastes polycolpus). We found a striking association between parasite infection and the host microbiota composition restricted to the fins the parasite anchored. We clearly demonstrated that infections by the parasite induced a shift in (and did not result from) the host fin microbiota. Fin microbiota further got similar to that of the adult stage, and the free-living infective stage of the parasite during infection with a predominance of the Burkholderiaceae bacteria family. This suggests that Burkholderiaceae bacteria is involved in a co-infection process and possibly facilitate T. polycolpus infection. We reveal novel mechanistic insights for understanding the role of the microbiota in host-parasite interactions, which has implications for predicting the progression of diseases in natural host populations.

Abstract: International audience; While many efforts have been devoted to understand variations in food web structure among terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, the environmental factors influencing food web structure at large spatial scales remain hardly explored. Here, we compiled biodiversity inventories to infer food web structure of 67 French lakes using an allometric niche-based model and tested how environmental variables (temperature, productivity, and habitat) influence them. By applying a multivariate analysis on 20 metrics of food web topology, we found that food web structural variations are represented by two distinct complementary and independent structural descriptors. The first is related to the overall trophic diversity, whereas the second is related to the vertical structure. Interestingly, the trophic diversity descriptor was mostly explained by habitat size (26.7% of total deviance explained) and habitat complexity (20.1%) followed by productivity (dissolved organic carbon: 16.4%; nitrate: 9.1%) and thermal variations (10.7%). Regarding the vertical structure descriptor, it was mostly explained by water thermal seasonality (39.0% of total deviance explained) and habitat depth (31.9%) followed by habitat complexity (8.5%) and size (5.5%) as well as annual mean temperature (5.6%). Overall, we found that temperature, productivity, and habitat characteristics collectively shape lake food web structure. We also found that intermediate levels of productivity, high levels of temperature (mean and seasonality), as well as large habitats are associated with the largest and most complex food webs. Our findings, therefore, highlight the importance of focusing on these three components especially in the context of global change, as significant structural changes in aquatic food webs could be expected under increased temperature, pollution, and habitat alterations.

Abstract: Variation in species richness across the tree of life, accompanied by the incredible variety of ecological and morphological characteristics found in nature, has inspired many studies to link traits with species diversification. Angiosperms are a highly diverse group that has fundamentally shaped life on earth since the Cretaceous, and illustrate how species diversification affects ecosystem functioning. Numerous traits and processes have been linked to differences in species richness within this group, but we know little about how these interact and their relative importance. Here, we synthesized data from 152 studies that used state-dependent speciation and extinction (SSE) models on angiosperm clades. Intrinsic traits related to reproduction and morphology were often linked to diversification but a set of universal drivers did not emerge as traits did not have consistent effects across clades. Importantly, dataset properties were correlated to SSE model results - trees that were larger, older, or less well-sampled tended to yield trait-dependent outcomes. We compared these properties to recommendations for SSE model use and provide a set of best practices to follow when designing studies and reporting results. Finally, we argue that SSE model inferences should be considered in a larger context incorporating species’ ecology, demography and genetics.

Abstract: International audience; Early literacy and numeracy skills are developed during early childhood. Among the many factors that influence the development of such skills, the literature shows that the executive functions, especially the response inhibition (RI)—that is the capability to block out or to tune out what can be considered irrelevant information or action to the learning task—is one of the most essential functions. There are specific tests used to appraise these children's inhibition skills, but these tests are generally time-consuming, and demand specialized human resources.We present a computational approach to model children's RI behaviour through the analysis of educational traces left in an educational app. This modelling allows the automatic and instant identification of the RI level of children without the need of a human-conducted test.Our modelling is based on two definitions of RI found in the literature, from which we derived a mathematical formalism of three variables we used to query the traces dataset and isolate the RI behaviour of each student from the learning traces generated in the app. The sample population is composed of children from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. The model is then assessed by comparing it to a traditional human-conducted RI test suitable for kindergarten children, the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulder (HTKS) task.The results show that our RI model can explain an important part of the HTKS variance (up to 0.45 according to the adjusted R2) when taking the HTKS results as a dependent variable for a multiple regression model. In practice, our model can be integrated in a learning app and become a powerful tool for instant preliminary identification of dysfunctional RI behaviour, especially in the early stages of children's education. Once students are identified by our model as having a dysfunctional RI behaviour, teachers can rapidly act to help them. Besides, the proposed model requires only very simple data to work, which means it can be easily integrated into different learning apps.

Abstract: International audience; Climate change is most strongly felt in the polar regions of the world, with significant impacts on the species that live there. The arrival of parasites and pathogens from more temperate areas may become a significant problem for these populations, but current observations of parasite presence often lack a historical reference of prior absence. Observations in the high Arctic of the seabird tick Ixodes uriae suggested that this species expanded poleward in the last two decades in relation to climate change. As this tick can have a direct impact on the breeding success of its seabird hosts and vectors several pathogens, including Lyme disease spirochaetes, understanding its invasion dynamics is essential for predicting its impact on polar seabird populations. Here, we use population genetic data and host serology to test the hypothesis that I. uriae recently expanded into Svalbard. Both black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) and thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) were sampled for ticks and blood in Kongsfjorden, Spitsbergen. Ticks were genotyped using microsatellite markers and population genetic analyses were performed using data from 14 reference populations from across the tick's northern distribution. In contrast to predictions, the Spitsbergen population showed high genetic diversity and significant differentiation from reference populations, suggesting long-term isolation. Host serology also demonstrated a high exposure rate to Lyme disease spirochaetes (Bbsl). Targeted PCR and sequencing confirmed the presence of Borrelia garinii in a Spitsbergen tick, demonstrating the presence of Lyme disease bacteria in the high Arctic for the first time. Taken together, results contradict the notion that I. uriae has recently expanded into the high Arctic. Rather, this tick has likely been present for some time, maintaining relatively high population sizes and an endemic transmission cycle of Bbsl. Close future observations of population infestation/infection rates will now be necessary to relate epidemiological changes to ongoing climate modifications.

Abstract: International audience; We present ComBiNet, a visualization, query, and comparison system for exploring bipartite multivariate dynamic social networks. Historians and sociologists study social networks constructed from textual sources mentioning events related to people, such as marriage acts, birth certificates, and contracts. We model this type of data using bipartite multivariate dynamic networks to maintain a representation faithful to the original sources while not too complex. Relying on this data model, ComBiNet allows exploring networks using both visual and textual queries using the Cypher language, the two being synchronized to specify queries using the most suitable modality; simple queries are easy to express visually and can be refined textually when they become complex. These queries are used for applying topological and attribute-based selection on the network. Query results are visualized in the context of the whole network and over a geographical map for geolocalized entities. We also present the design of our interaction techniques for querying social networks to visually compare the selections in terms of topology, measures, and attribute distributions. We validate the query and comparison systems by showing how they have been used to answer historical questions and by explaining how they have been improved through a usability study conducted with historians.

Abstract: International audience; Wetlands are the largest natural source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. The eddy covariance method provides robust measurements of net ecosystem exchange of CH4, but interpreting its spatiotemporal variations is challenging due to the co-occurrence of CH4 production, oxidation, and transport dynamics. Here, we estimate these three processes using a data-model fusion approach across 25 wetlands in temperate, boreal, and Arctic regions. Our data-constrained model—iPEACE—reasonably reproduced CH4 emissions at 19 of the 25 sites with normalized root mean square error of 0.59, correlation coefficient of 0.82, and normalized standard deviation of 0.87. Among the three processes, CH4 production appeared to be the most important process, followed by oxidation in explaining inter-site variations in CH4 emissions. Based on a sensitivity analysis, CH4 emissions were generally more sensitive to decreased water table than to increased gross primary productivity or soil temperature. For periods with leaf area index (LAI) of ≥20% of its annual peak, plant-mediated transport appeared to be the major pathway for CH4 transport. Abstract: International audience; This work focuses on the impact of sulfonated Poly(Ether Ether Ketone) (sPEEK) membrane pretreatments on fuel cell performance, starting from two different batches of Fumapem E730 from Fumatech, acquired in 2019 and in 2020. sPEEK membranes are possible lower cost alternatives to PerFluoroSulfonic Acid (PFSA) membranes for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) applications. Before use, they must be pretreated to ensure a complete protonic substitution and removal of residual reagents/solvent: the simplest protocol consists in soaking the membrane in an acid solution followed by a rinsing step in water. In addition to this acidification step, hydrothermal (HT) treatments in water at high temperature for a few hours to a few days were also considered herein, as well as a hydro-alcoholic (HA) step, because of their expected effects on membrane nanostructure. Overall, four different protocols were used. The membrane water uptake, water self-diffusion, proton conductivity, and fuel cell performance-under H2/O2-were measured. It was found that in the best case-membranes from the 2020 batch subjected to HA followed by 72 hours HT pretreatments-the fuel cell performances exceeded those obtained with a PFSA membrane (Nafion XL). This is explained by a higher protonic conductivity, probably resulting from a better sPEEK nano-structuration.

Abstract: International audience; Neuronal rhythmogenesis in the spinal cord is correlated with variations in extracellular K + levels ([K + ] e). Astrocytes play important role in [K + ] e homeostasis and compute neuronal information. Yet it is unclear how neuronal oscillations are regulated by astrocytic K + homeostasis. Here we identify the astrocytic inward-rectifying K + channel Kir4.1 (a.k.a. Kcnj10) as a key molecular player for neuronal rhythmicity in the spinal central pattern generator (CPG). By combining two-photon calcium imaging with electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry and genetic tools, we report that astrocytes display Ca 2+ transients before and during oscillations of neighboring neurons. Inhibition of astrocytic Ca 2+-transients with BAPTA decreases the barium-sensitive Kir4.1 current responsible of K + clearance. Finally, we show in mice that Kir4.1 knockdown in astrocytes progressively prevents neuronal oscillations and alters the locomotor pattern resulting in lower motor performances in challenging tasks. These data identify astroglial Kir4.1 channels as key regulators of neuronal rhythmogenesis in the CPG driving locomotion.

Abstract: International audience; Although the metal-based catalyzed cyanomethylation of aldehydes is well-developed, a similar approach to ketones with acetonitrile derivatives remains a challenge. Thanks to Tolman type complexes, NiIIcomplexes with a pyridine(dicarboxamide) pincer ligand, analternative metal-catalyzed (1-5 mol% catalyst) cyanomethylation of an array of isatins and activated ketones is reported at room temperature. High isolated yields (up to 99%) were obtained not only with the poorly acidic acetonitrile but also with more challenging substituted alkyl cyanide nucleophiles. The in situ generated putative ion paired catalysts [NiCR2CN]-Cat+ likely benefit from the cation part (Cs+ or n-Bu4N+) to facilitate their formation and catalytic activity

Abstract: International audience; Aims: To evaluate the effectiveness of a French mass-media campaign in raising knowledge of both long-term alcohol-related harms (LTH) and low-risk drinking guidelines (LRDG), as well as in lowering alcohol consumption.Design: An 8-month longitudinal survey from February to October 2019, with three waves of on-line data collection (T0 before the campaign, T1 just after it ended and T2 6 months after it ended).Setting: France.Participants: A total of 2538 adult drinkers (aged 18-75 years).Measurements: The main outcomes' variables were LTH knowledge (cancer, hypertension, brain haemorrhage), LRDG knowledge (two guidelines: 'maximum of two drinks a day' and 'minimum of 2 days without alcohol per week'), intention to reduce alcohol consumption and self-declared consumption with respect to the French LRDG. At T1, exposure to the campaign was measured using self-reported campaign recall.Findings: In T1, we observed significant positive interactions between exposure group based on campaign recall and survey waves on knowledge of (i) the 'maximum two drinks a day' guideline [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.32, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.08-1.62, P = 0.008], (ii) brain haemorrhage (aOR = 1.80, 95% CI = 1.44-2.25, P < 0.001) and (iii) hypertension (aOR = 1.41, 95% CI = 1.09-1.81, P = 0.008) risks. Campaign exposure was also associated with a significant decrease in at-risk drinking in women (aOR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.50-0.88, P = 0.004). No significant interaction was observed at T1 for the knowledge of the 'minimum of 2 days without alcohol a week' guideline, or of cancer risk. At T2, no significant interaction was observed for the main outcomes' variables.Conclusions: There appears to be an association between exposure to a 2019 French mass-media campaign to raise knowledge of long-term alcohol-related harms and low-risk drinking guidelines and reduce alcohol consumption and (i) improved knowledge of the 'maximum two drinks per day guideline', (ii) knowledge of the risks of hypertension and brain haemorrhage and (iii) a reduction in the proportion of people exceeding low-risk drinking guidelines (in the general population only). These associations were only observed over the short term and, in some cases, only for certain segments of the population.

Abstract: International audience; The increasing frequency and intensity of summer heatwaves are pushing freshwater zooplankton towards their upper thermal tolerance limits. At the same time, higher temperatures and prolonged water column stratification can favour the dominance of cyanobacteria in phytoplankton. Even when not toxic or grazing resistant, these prokaryotes lack phytosterols as essential precursors for cholesterol, the main sterol in animal tissues. Cholesterol plays a crucial role in the physiological adaptation of ectotherms to high temperature. Therefore, the shift to cyanobacteria-dominated systems may increase the vulnerability of zooplankton to heatwaves by intensifying cholesterol limitation.Here, we used death time curves that take into consideration the intensity and duration of a thermal challenge and a dynamic model to study the effects of cholesterol limitation on the heat tolerance of the keystone species Daphnia magna and to simulate the cumulative mortality that could occur in a fluctuating environment over several days of heatwave.We show that increasing cholesterol limitation does not affect the slope between time-to-immobilisation and temperature, but does decrease the maximal temperature that Daphnia can withstand by up to 0.74°C. This seemingly small difference is sufficient to halve the time individuals can survive heat stress.Our simulations predicted that, when facing heatwaves over several days, the differences in survival caused by cholesterol limitation build up rapidly. Considering the anticipated intensity and duration of future (2070–2099) heatwaves, cholesterol limitation could increase mortality by up to 45% and 72% under low and medium greenhouse gas emission scenarios, respectively.These results suggest that the increasing risk of cholesterol limitation due to more frequent cyanobacterial blooms could compromise the resistance of zooplankton populations to future heatwaves. More generally, this study shows the importance of considering the nutritional context in any attempt to predict ectotherm mortality with increasing temperatures in the field.

Abstract: When vacancies are filled, the ads that were posted are often not withdrawn, creating "phantom" vacancies. The existence of phantoms implies that older job listings are less likely to represent true vacancies than are younger ones. We assume that job seekers direct their search based on the listing age and so equalize the expected benefit of a job application across listing age. Forming a match with a vacancy of age α creates a phantom of age α with probability β and this leads to a negative informational externality that affects all vacancies of age α and older. Thus, the magnitude of this externality decreases with the age of the listing when the match is formed. Relative to the constrained efficient search behavior, the directed search of job seekers leads them to over-apply to younger listings. We illustrate the model using US labor market data. The contribution of phantoms to overall frictions is large, but, conditional on the existence of phantoms, the social planner cannot improve much on the directed search allocation.

Abstract: We show two stability results for a closed Riemannian manifold whose Ricci curvature is small in the Kato sense and whose first Betti number is equal to the dimension. The first one is a geometric stability result stating that such a manifold is Gromov-Hausdorff close to a flat torus. The second one states that, under a stronger assumption, such a manifold is diffeomorphic to a torus: this extends a result by Colding and Cheeger-Colding obtained in the context of a lower bound on the Ricci curvature., 24 pages. Abstract: International audience; In the French north-western Alps, several lakes of glacial origin, such as Aiguebelette and La Thuile, present some mass-transport deposits within their sedimentary sequences. These event layers can result from lake sediment destabilization eventually triggered by earthquakes. On Lake Aiguebelette, based on sedimentological, geochemical and magnetic analyses, and high-resolution seismic and bathymetric surveys a ca 1 m thick event layer was identified in the deepest lake basin and a synchronous ca 2 cm thick deposit in the shallow basin. Age-depth models based on radiocarbon ages reveal that both mass-transport deposits in Lake Aiguebelette occurred around the Younger Dryas - Early Holocene climatic transition (i.e. 11 700 cal bp) time range. In Lake La Thuile, located 30 km away, unique mass-transport deposits (translational slide type) were recorded at the same time range in sedimentary records. Additionally, high-resolution seismic profiles previously acquired in Lake Annecy and Lake Bourget support the hypothesis of significant mass-transport deposits occurring at the Younger Dryas - Early Holocene time range. These outcomes on four north-western peri-Alpine and Alpine lakes highlight the regional occurrence of mass-transport deposits in the Younger Dryas - Early Holocene time range. Seismic and rockfall events are discussed as potential sources of these significant and similarly aged mass-transport deposits. Based on this study and a literature review, the authors suggest that mechanisms induced by rapid climate change and glacial retreat, such as crustal rebound and erosional unloading, could favour the triggering of earthquakes and rockfall events. In the case of mass-transport deposits archived in north-western Alpine lakes during this time period, this study favours the hypothesis of increased seismicity as the primary source driving process involved.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we propose graph-based models for several vehicle routing problems with intermediate stops: the capacitated multi-trip vehicle routing problem with time windows, the multi-depot vehicle routing problem with inter-depot routes, the arc routing problem with intermediate facilities under capacity and length restrictions and the green vehicle routing problem. In these models, the set of feasible routes is represented by a set of resource constrained paths in one or several graphs. Intermediate stops are supported by the possibility to define negative resource consumption for some arcs. The models that we propose are then solved by VRPSolver, which implements a generic branch-cut-and-price exact algorithm. Thus, a simple parameterization enables us to use several state-of-the-art algorithmic components: automatic stabilization by dual price smoothing, limited-memory rank-1 cuts, reduced cost-based arc elimination, enumeration of elementary routes, and hierarchical strong branching. For each problem, we numerically compare the proposed methodology with the best exact approach found in the literature. State-of-the-art computational results were obtained for all problems except one.

Abstract: Objective: There is a growing interest in using pre-heated composites instead of dual-cured cements when luting indirect restorations. This study evaluated the film thickness obtained from two pre-heated composites and two resin cements, by two different operators. The influence of the materials and the level of expertise of the operator were analyzed.Materials and methods: Forty specimens of human dentin and composite discs were prepared and divided into four groups depending on the luting process. Each group was randomly equally divided to be handled by two operators with different levels of experience. Two of the initial four groups were luted using dual-cured cements and the two remaining groups using light-cured pre-heated composites. Specimen discs were cut after luting, and film thickness was measured using a Digital microscope. Data were analyzed using a 2-way ANOVA with the Holm-Sidak pairwise multiple comparison procedure (p < 0.05). Results: Mean film thickness ranged from 156.16 ± 4.7 to 33.82 ± 0.7 μm. Significant differences (p < 0.001) were noticed between expert and novice results with pre-heated composites. Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, using pre-heated composites as a luting cement requires a better level of expertise to achieve a clinically acceptable film thickness. Clinical significance: Using pre-heated composites as luting agent for indirect restorations requires an experimented skill level to achieve a clinically recommended film thickness. Abstract: International audience; The relative contributions of agricultural intensity and semi-natural habitats to the multifunctionality and sustainability of ecosystems at different spatial scales remain largely under-investigated. In this study, we assessed the multifunctionality of 40 winter cereal fields and 40 hedgerows based on ecological, agronomic and socio-economic performance using data from field surveys and interviews with farmers. We specifically focused on the effects of local farming systems (organic vs. conventional) and management (cereals intercropped with legumes vs. monocrops), the effects of landscape heterogeneity related to hedgerow density, and the spatial extent of semi-natural habitat and organic farming. Multifunctionality indices associated with increased values of proxies for biodiversity conservation and pest control functions were higher for hedgerows than crop fields. Agroecosystem multifunctionality was similar between organic and conventional farming as a consequence of antagonistic responses of individual function proxies. While organic farming promoted the ecological performance of crops, conventional farming resulted in higher agronomic performance (i.e. yield). Interestingly, lower yields of organic crops were not systematically associated with reductions in socio-economic performance in terms of farmer income and labour. At the landscape scale, hedgerow density and the extent of semi-natural habitats and organic farming had little influence on agroecosystem multifunctionality or individual function proxies. Synthesis and applications. Our results confirm the high value of hedgerows and organic farming at the local scale for the ecological performance of ecosystems. Our study suggests that, among existing agri-environment schemes in Europe, hedgerow planting and organic farming are appropriate tools to optimise the ecological performance of ecosystems at the local scale even if antagonistic effects with agronomic performance should not be neglected.

Abstract: International audience; Boolean networks are a mathematical model which has been widely used since decades in the context of biological regulation networks qualitative modelling. They consist in collections of entities, each having two possible local states (1 -- active, and 0 -- inactive), which interact with each other over discrete time. The simplicity of their setting together with their high abstraction level are especially convenient to focus on foundations of information transmission in genetic regulation, and on mathematical explanation and prediction of phenomenological observations. This chapter aims to present the Boolean modelling framework, by developing its theoretical bases and emphasizing its usefulness for capturing biological regulation phenomena. But it goes beyond that by covering their ability to capture the information transmission and its consequences depending on the ways the entities update their local state over time.

Abstract: Order and disorder govern protein functions, but there is a great diversity in disorder, from regions that are – and stay – fully disordered to conditional order. This diversity is still difficult to decipher even though it is encoded in the amino acid sequences. Here, we developed an analytic Python package, named pyHCA, to estimate the foldability of a protein segment from the only information of its amino acid sequence and based on a measure of its density in regular secondary structures associated with hydrophobic clusters, as defined by the Hydrophobic Cluster Analysis (HCA) approach. The tool was designed by optimizing the separation between foldable segments from databases of disorder (DisProt) and order (SCOPe (soluble domains) and OPM (transmembrane domains)). It allows to specify the ratio between order, embodied by regular secondary structures (either participating in the hydrophobic core of well-folded 3D structures or conditionally formed in intrinsically disordered regions) and disorder. We illustrated the relevance of pyHCA with several examples and applied it to the sequences of the proteomes of 21 species ranging from prokaryotes and archaea to unicellular and multicellular eukaryotes, for which structure models are provided in the AlphaFold2 databases. Cases of low-confidence scores related to disorder were distinguished from those of sequences that we identified as foldable but are still excluded from accurate modeling by AlphaFold2 due to a lack of sequence homologs or to compositional biases. Overall, our approach is complementary to AlphaFold2, providing guides to map structural innovations through evolutionary processes, at proteome and gene scales.

Abstract: International audience; Nectar is a key resource for numerous insects. Despite its importance, nectar productivity has mainly been assessed using one sampling method, in which the volume of nectar produced by a flower is measured after 24 h of isolation from insects (‘measured 24 h volume’ hereafter). This method assumes that nectar removal by flower-visiting insects does not affect nectar productivity. Hence, a linearity in the nectar production dynamic is assumed. The effect of nectar removal could lead to an actual volume of nectar produced per flower over 24 h being higher or lower than the measured 24 h volume. Whether the nectar productivity is influenced by insect activity still therefore needs to be assessed. In a field experiment, we estimated the nectar production dynamics of lavender (Lavandula hybrida) and fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) flowers and tested whether they met the linearity assumption. Then, we developed a simulation model to identify how different scenarios of insect foraging activity: nectar removal rate (average and maximum), and flower-selection strategies (random selection or rewarding flower selection) alter the estimated 24 h volume of nectar for both crops (‘estimated 24 h volume’ hereafter). Finally, we tested whether the estimated 24 h volume differed from the measured 24 h volume for both crops. Lavender and fennel showed equal measured 24 h volume of nectar but the produced nectar volume over 6 h suggested that a flower of lavender was more productive than a flower of fennel. Both nectar production dynamics did not meet the assumption of linearity. The simulation models showed that the estimated 24 h volume increased with maximum nectar removal rate for lavender, and the opposite was found for fennel. Rewarding selection always increased the estimated 24 h volume for fennel while for lavender a positive effect was detected at average rate of nectar removal. We found that the estimated 24 h volume was always greater than the measured 24 h volume. Our model demonstrated that the effect of insect foraging activity on flower's nectar productivity should be considered while estimating the resources produced by plants. As an alternative, measures of produced nectar volume in short time spans may be compared with the measured 24 h volume to check the reliability of this widespread method.

Abstract: Cyclone Pam swept through the archipelago of Vanuatu on 13-14 March 2015, with wind speeds exceeding those recorded anywhere in the South Pacific since the 1980s. Southern and central parts of the country were particularly affected. Material damage on Tongoa, one of the most afflicted islands, was extensive, but no deaths were reported. During the storm, villagers found shelter in their kitchen, in what is considered locally as a 'lifeboat'. The aftermath was managed and mitigated by international aid organisations. On Tongoa, this included a 'Shelter Cluster' programme, under which villagers were given house rebuilding kits. Elaborating upon extensive ethnographic investigations on site between 2011 and 2018, this paper explores and reveals the ways in which this aid generated confusion among the local population. Abstract: International audience; An easy, effective and eco-friendly one-pot process for the preparation of 4H-pyran compounds has been established by using a catalytic amount of reduced graphene oxide functionalized with diethylenetriamine (rGO-DETA) in water under mild conditions. The functionalized catalyst was very effective for this one-pot reaction and provided the desired products 1a-t with good to high yields (87-97%) in short reaction times. Moreover, rGO-DETA composite could be reused for four cycles without obvious decrease of its performance. In the next step, two pyran derivatives 1f and 1h were used to synthesize the corresponding pyran-like tacrine derivatives 3f and 3h via the reaction of cyclohexanone, aluminum trichloride in reflux of 1,2-dichloroethane as solvent. Antibacterial activity of several of the prepared compounds was assessed against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by well and disk diffusion techniques. The 4H-pyran 1g and 1s (2000 μg/mL) were effective against M. luteus as Gram-positive bacterium by recording a zone of inhibition of 15 and 16 mm, respectively. 4H-pyran 1m showed a moderate antibacterial behavior against both M. luteus and S. marcescens. Pyran-like tacrine analogue 3f (50 mg/mL) displayed antibacterial behavior towards S. aureus as Gram-positive and S. marcescens as Gram-negative bacteria with zones of inhibition of 13 and 12 mm, respectively. 4H-pyran 1j featured a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value 39.06 μg/mL for M. Luteus, which is the closest value to ampicillin.

Abstract: The question of the evolution of language is investigated by several research communities (including biologists and linguists) that strive to highlight similar linguistic capacities across species. So far though, no consensus exists on linguistic capacities of nonhuman species. The major contentions are on the misuse of linguistic terminology, irrelevance of analysis methods and inappropriate behavioural data collection. The field of ‘animal linguistics’ has emerged to overcome these difficulties and attempt to reach unique methods and terminology. This primer is a tutorial review of ‘animal linguistics’. It exposes the linguistic theoretical concepts of semantics, pragmatics and syntax, and proposes the minimal criteria that are to be fulfilled to claim that a given species displays a given linguistic capacity. Second, it reviews relevant methods successfully applied to the study of animal data, and proposes a list of useful references to detect and overcome major pitfalls commonly observed in the collection of animal behaviour data. This primer represents a milestone towards mutual understanding and fruitful collaborations between linguists and biologists.

Abstract: Contemporary climate change affects population dynamics, but its influence varies with landscape structure. It is still unclear whether landscape fragmentation buffers or amplifies the effects of climate on population size and the age and body size of individuals composing these populations. This study aims to investigate the impacts of warm climates on lizard life-history traits and population dynamics in habitats that vary in their connectivity. We monitored common lizard Zootoca vivipara populations for 3 years in an experimental system in which both climatic conditions and connectivity among habitats were simultaneously manipulated. We considered two climatic treatments (i.e. present-day climate and warm climate [+1.4°C than present-day climate]) and two connectivity treatments (i.e. a connected treatment in which individuals could move from one climate to the other and an isolated treatment in which movement between climates was not possible). We monitored survival, reproduction, growth, dispersal, age and body size of each individual in the system as well as population density through time. We found that the influence of warm climates on life-history traits and population dynamics depended on connectivity among thermal habitats. Populations in warm climates were (i) composed of younger individuals only when isolated; (ii) larger in population size only in connected habitats and (iii) composed of larger age-specific individuals independently of the landscape configuration. The connectivity among habitats altered population responses to climate warming likely through asymmetries in the flow and phenotype of dispersers between thermal habitats. Our results demonstrate that landscape fragmentation can drastically change the dynamics and persistence of populations facing climate change.Le changement climatique actuel impacte la dynamique des populations, mais son influence varie avec la structure du paysage. A ce jour, il est difficile de prédire si la fragmentation du paysage réduit ou augmente les effets du réchauffement climatique sur la taille des populations, ainsi que sur l'âge et la taille corporelle des individus qui composent ces populations. Cette étude s'intéresse aux impacts d'un climat plus chaud sur les traits d'histoire de vie et la dynamique de populations vivant dans des habitats qui diffèrent quant à leur niveau de connectivité. Pendant trois ans, nous avons suivi des populations de lézards vivipares Zootoca vivipara au sein d'un dispositif expérimental qui permet de manipuler simultanément les conditions climatiques et le niveau de connectivité entre habitats. Nous avons considéré deux traitements climatiques [i.e., climat actuel et climat chaud (+1.4°C plus chaud que le climat actuel)] et deux traitements de connectivité (i.e., un traitement connecté au sein duquel les individus pouvaient se déplacer d'un climat à un autre, et un traitement isolé au sein duquel les déplacements entre climats n'étaient pas permis). Tout au long de l'expérience, nous avons mesuré la survie, la reproduction, la croissance, la dispersion, l'âge et la taille corporelle de chaque individu ainsi que la densité des populations. Nous avons observé que l'influence du climat chaud sur les traits d'histoire de vie et la dynamique de population dépendait du niveau de connectivité entre habitats. Les populations en climat chaud étaient composées (i) d'individus plus jeunes seulement en habitat isolé, (ii) de plus d'individus uniquement en habitat connecté et (iii) d'individus plus grands à âge égal et ce indépendamment de la configuration du paysage. Nos résultats montrent que le niveau de connectivité entre habitats altère les réponses des populations au réchauffement climatique via une asymétrie dans le flux et le phénotype des dispersants entre climats. Nos résultats démontrent que la fragmentation du paysage peut influencer de façon drastique la dynamique et la persistance des populations face au changement climatique.

Abstract: International audience; A severe heatwave occurred in April 2010 over West Africa. It was characterisedby a particularly high daily minimum temperature reaching more than 35◦ Clocally and a high water vapour content. In this study we analyse the abilityof a mesoscale limited-area model to represent such an event and investigatethe advantage of using an explicit representation of deep convection for sucha case associated with very limited precipitation amounts. Two high-resolutionsimulations (5 km × 5 km horizontal grid) have been performed from 10 to 19April 2010; they are identical except that one uses a deep convection parameter-isation (simulation PARAM) and the other does not (simulation EXPL). Thesesimulations are evaluated with different observational datasets including grid-ded products as well as local meteorological measurements and radiosoundings.Overall, both simulations display a negative temperature bias in the low levelsbut this bias is much more pronounced in PARAM, mainly due to evaporativecooling of spurious precipitation. Indeed, in PARAM, precipitation is too fre-quently triggered (around mid-day, i.e., several hours too early) and too strong;the intertropical discontinuity (ITD) propagates too far north during this 10-daysequence. Conversely, in EXPL, the observed northward shift of the ITD is cor-rectly simulated and precipitation displays a better timing, variability, intensityand latitudinal extent. It thus appears that the representation of deep convec-tion affects the atmospheric circulation associated with the heatwave event. Themechanisms involved in this humid heatwave are further investigated with ther-modynamic and dynamic budgets which also underline the main differencesbetween the two simulations. A proper representation of deep convection onsub-diurnal time-scale turns out to be necessary for the simulation of this heat-wave episode, which points to the interest of convection-permitting simulationsfor the study of heatwaves even though they are generally characterised by verylittle precipitation.; Nous avons simulé avec un modèle de méso-échelle, dix jours d’Avril 2010 de vague de chaleur au Sahel, en Afrique de l’Ouest. Cet épisode de températures extrêmes aux conséquences sociétales importantes s’inscrit dans une tendance au réchauffement depuis plusieurs décennies plus forte au printemps et plus forte que la tendance mondiale moyenne.Les simulations ont été évaluées à l’aide d’observations terrestres, spatiales et de radio-sondages.La simulation avec convection profonde paramétrée génère des précipitations non observées ou trop au nord, trop fortes et se déclenchant trop tôt dans l’après-midi, impactant les basses couches avec un refroidissement et une humidification générés par évaporation. La simulation sans convection profonde paramétrée est en bien meilleur accord avec les observations. L’augmentation de vapeur d’eau par le nord, et par le sud-ouest liée à une poussée de mousson, est en partie à l’origine de l’augmentation des températures, surtout des minima par effet de serre. Cette tendance au réchauffement est reproduite même si des biais systématiques subsistent. Ils font intervenir notamment les aérosols désertiques, plus nombreux que la normale au cours du printemps étudié et une sous-évaluation des épisodes nuageux.En conclusion, une résolution spatiale suffisante permettant de s’abstenir de la paramétrisation de la convection profonde s’avère importante pour simuler correctement un épisode de vague de chaleur.

Abstract: International audience; Continental freshwater systems are particularly vulnerable to environmental variation. Climate changeinduced desertification and the anthropogenic exploitation of hydric resources result in the progressive evaporation and salinization of inland water bodies in many areas of the globe. However, how this process impacts microbial communities and their activities in biogeochemical cycles is poorly known. Here, we take a space-fortime substitution approach and characterize the prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial communities of two planktonic cell-size fractions (0.2-5 μm and 5-30 μm) from lakes of diverse trophic levels sampled along a salinity-alkalinity gradient located in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB). We applied a 16S/18S rRNA gene metabarcoding strategy to determine the microbial community composition of 54 samples from 12 different lakes, from the low-salinity lake Zirahuén to the hypersaline residual ponds of Rinc on de Parangueo. Except for systems at both extremes of the salinity gradient, most lakes along the evaporation trend bear actively forming microbialites, which harbor microbial communities clearly distinct from those of plankton. Several lakes were sampled in winter and late spring and the crater lakes Alchichica and Atexcac were sampled across the water column. Physicochemical parameters related to salinity-alkalinity were the most influential drivers of microbial community structure whereas trophic status, depth, or season were less important. Our results suggest that climate change and anthropogenic-induced hydric deficit could significantly affect microbial communities, potentially altering ecosystem functioning.

Abstract: International audience; Background and purpose - A clinical risk score for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy could help improve prevention. Methods - A case-control study was conducted including (i) definite or probable SUDEP cases collected by the French National Sentinel Mortality Epilepsy Network and (ii) control patients from the French national research database of epilepsy monitoring units. Patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy were eligible. Multiple logistic regressions were performed. After sensitivity analysis and internal validation, a simplified risk score was developed from the selected variables. Results - Sixty-two SUDEP cases and 620 controls were included. The availability of population genomic data through new sequencing technologies gives unprecedented opportunities for estimating important evolutionary forces such as genetic drift, selection and mutation biases across organisms. Yet, analytical methods that can handle polymorphisms jointly with sequence divergence across species are rare and not easily accessible to empiricists. 2. We implemented polymorphism-aware phylogenetic models (PoMos), an alternative approach for species tree estimation, in the Bayesian phylogenetic software RevBayes. PoMos naturally account for incomplete lineage sorting, which is known to cause difficulties for phylogenetic inference in species radiations, and scale well with genome-wide data. Simultaneously, PoMos can estimate mutation and selection biases. 3. We have applied our methods to resolve the complex phylogenetic relationships of a young radiation of Chorthippus grasshoppers, based on coding sequences. In addition to establishing a well-supported species tree, we found a mutation bias favouring AT alleles and selection bias promoting the fixation of GC alleles, the latter consistent with GC-biased gene conversion. The selection bias is two orders of magnitude lower than genetic drift, validating the critical role of nearly neutral evolutionary processes in species radiation. 4. PoMos offer a wide range of models to reconstruct phylogenies and can be easily combined with existing models in RevBayes—for example, relaxed clock and divergence time estimation—offering new insights into the evolutionary processes underlying molecular evolution and, ultimately, species diversification. Abstract: International audience; The foundations of modern quantitative geomorphology have thus been built around this paradigm of steady-state landscapes responding to progressive changes in climatic or tectonic condition. In ice-free landscapes, the evolution of continental landforms over large time scales is generally described by a competition between tectonic uplift and erosion of rivers and hillslopes. The initiation of co-seismic landslides is generally attributed to the passage of seismic waves, and in particular to the peak ground acceleration associated with volume waves. The volume of landslides is then generally obtained using empirical scaling laws with their area. Co-seismic landslides have a geomorphological impact that goes beyond the co-seismic phase. The principle of a landscape at a steady state, with a balance between the rates of erosion and uplift, needs to be reconsidered due to the amplitude and variability of tectonic and geomorphological processes during the seismic cycle

Abstract: Ecological limits on the population sizes and number of species a region is capable of supporting are thought to simultaneously produce spatial patterns in genetic diversity and species richness. However, we do not know the extent to which resource-based environmental limits jointly determine these patterns of biodiversity in ectotherms because of their low energy requirements compared to endotherms. Here, we adapt a framework for the ways ecological limits may shape genetic diversity and species richness previously tested in mammals for amphibians to determine whether similar processes produce continental patterns of biodiversity across both taxa. Repurposing open, raw microsatellite data from 19 species sampled at 554 sites in North America we found that spatial patterns of genetic diversity run opposite to patterns of species richness and genetic differentiation. However, while measures of resource availability and niche heterogeneity predict 89% of the variation in species richness, these landscape metrics are poor predictors of genetic diversity. Although heterogeneity appears to be an important driver of genetic and species biodiversity patterns in both amphibians and mammals, our results suggest that variation in genetic diversity both within and across species makes it difficult to infer general processes producing spatial patterns of amphibian genetic diversity.

Abstract: International audience; For hundreds of years, the color diversity of Mollusca shells has been a topic of interest for humanity. However, the genetic control underlying color expression is still poorly understood in mollusks. The pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera is increasingly becoming a biological model to study this process due to its ability to produce a large range of colors. Previous breeding experiments demonstrated that color phenotypes were partly under genetic control, and while a few genes were found in comparative transcriptomics and epigenetic experiments, genetic variants associated to the phenotypes have not yet been investigated. Here, we used a pooled-sequencing approach on 172 individuals to investigate color-associated variants on three color phenotypes of economic interest for pearl farming, in three wild and one hatchery populations. While our results uncovered SNPs targeting pigment-related genes already identified in previous studies, such as PBGD, tyrosinases, GST, or FECH, we also identified new colorrelated genes occurring in the same pathways, like CYP4F8, CYP3A4 and CYP2R1. Moreover, we identified new genes involved in novel pathways unknown to be involved in shell coloration for P. margaritifera, like the carotenoid pathway, BCO1. These findings are essential to possibly implement future breeding programs focused on individual selection for specific color production in pearl oysters and improve the footprint of perliculture on Polynesian lagoon by producing less, but with a better quality.

Abstract: International audience; Land carbon sink is a vital component for the achievement of China's ambitious carbon neutrality goal, but its magnitude is poorly known. Atmospheric observations and inverse models are valuable tools to constrain the China's land carbon sink. Space-based CO2 measurements from satellites form an emerging data stream for application of such atmospheric inversions. Here, we reviewed the satellite missions that is dedicated to the monitoring of CO2, and the recent progresses on the inversion of China's land carbon sink using satellite CO2 measurements. We summarized the limitations and challenges in current space platforms, retrieval algorithms, and the inverse modeling. It is shown that there are large uncertainties of contemporary satellite-based estimates of China's land carbon sink. We discussed future opportunities of continuous improvements in three aspects to better constrain China's land carbon sink with space-based CO2 measurements.

Abstract: International audience; Much of the Ca2+ activity in astrocytes is spatially restricted to microdomains and occurs in fine processes that form a complex anatomical meshwork, the so-called spongiform domain. A growing body of literature indicates that those astrocytic Ca2+ signals can influence the activity of neuronal synapses and thus tune the flow of information through neuronal circuits. Because of technical difficulties in accessing the small spatial scale involved, the role of astrocyte morphology on Ca2+ microdomain activity remains poorly understood. Here, we use computational tools and idealized 3D geometries of fine processes based on recent super-resolution microscopy data to investigate the mechanistic link between astrocytic nanoscale morphology and local Ca2+ activity. Simulations demonstrate that the nano-morphology of astrocytic processes powerfully shapes the spatio-temporal properties of Ca2+ signals and promotes local Ca2+ activity. The model predicts that this effect is attenuated upon astrocytic swelling, hallmark of brain diseases, which we confirm experimentally in hypo-osmotic conditions. Upon repeated neurotransmitter release events, the model predicts that swelling hinders astrocytic signal propagation. Overall, this study highlights the influence of the complex morphology of astrocytes at the nanoscale and its remodeling in pathological conditions on neuron-astrocyte communication at so-called tripartite synapses, where astrocytic processes come into close contact with pre- and postsynaptic structures.

Abstract: The European native oyster (Ostrea edulis) is a threatened keystone species which historically created extensive, physically complex, biogenic habitats throughout European seas. Overfishing and direct habitat destruction, subsequently compounded by pollution, invasive species, disease, predation and climate change have resulted in the functional extinction of native oyster habitat across much of its former range. Although oyster reef habitat remains imperilled, active restoration efforts are rapidly gaining momentum. Identifying appropriate sites for habitat restoration is an essential first step in long-term project success. In this study, a three-round Delphi process was conducted to determine the most important factors to consider in site selection for European native oyster habitat restoration projects. Consensus was reached on a total of 65 factors as being important to consider in site selection for European native oyster habitat restoration projects. In addition to the abiotic factors typically included in habitat suitability models, socio-economic and logistical factors were found to be important. Determining the temporal and spatial variability of threats to native oyster habitat restoration and understanding the biotic factors present at a proposed restoration site also influence the potential for project scale-up and longevity. This list guides site selection by identifying: a shortlist of measurable factors which should be considered; the relevant data to collect; topics for discussion in participatory mapping processes; information of interest from the existing body of local ecological knowledge; and factors underpinning supportive and facilitating regulatory frameworks., This work was the product of the Site Selection Working Group within the Native Oyster Restoration Alliance (NORA).
