L’objectiu d’aquest treball és implementar un controlador en una placa basada en Arduino per controlar una maqueta del sistema ball and beam i desenvolupar una documentació que pugui ajudar estudiants tant del Grau com del Màster d’Enginyeria Industrial de l’ETSEIB (o qual- sevol persona amb coneixements bàsics de control automàtic) a entendre el funcionament del controlador i com implementar-lo en un entorn real. Aquesta memòria documenta els diferents processos que s’han seguit per implementar el controlador. Aquests processos inclouen el muntatge del model físic, incloent els esquemàtics del circuit elèctric o les característiques més rellevants dels components, la inicialització i config- uració de la placa i la sintonització dels seus perifèrics. This memory documents the different processes which have been followed in order to imple- ment the controller. These processes include the model’s physical layout assembly, including the electric circuit’s schematics or the components’ most relevant data, the initialization and configuration of the board and the tuning of its peripherals. En este trabajo se diseña y simula un controlador predictivo basado en modelo multiobjetivo para un sistema complejo de un electrolizador alcalino. Se explica y se comenta el análisis de los datos y la información que se ha podido extraer sobre el electrolizador alcalino de alta presión con límite inferior de explosividad del H2 del 4 %. Los gases de H2 y O2, deben suministrarse a altas presiones para evitar el uso de compresores. Dado que la pureza del gas disminuye con las altas presiones, se espera aumentar la presión de funcionamiento posible evitando la contaminación con una estrategia de control adecuada. En la búsqueda de aumentar la presión de funcionamiento de los electrolizadores alcalinos, se necesitan estrategias de control para disminuir la contaminación cruzada de los gases y, en consecuencia, aumentar la pureza del hidrógeno suministrado. Cabe resaltar que este trabajo ha tomado como base el modelo desarrollado anteriormente por el grupo de investigación correspondiente, con lo que se inicia el diseño de los controladores predictivos teniendo como base el conocimiento del comportamiento del sistema en lazo cerrado con otros controladores diseñados e incluso implementados experimentalmente. El diseño parte del modelo lineal a controlar ya desarrollado e incorpora el cálculo de los cambios óptimos en las variables manipuladas para lograr el resultado deseado y comprobar su precisión frente a otros controladores planteados en ese trabajo precedente. En este sentido, la modelización y el control son cuestiones clave para mejorar el funcionamiento y el diseño. El controlador se probará en un modelo lineal de alta fidelidad del electrolizador y debe ser capaz de mantener la impureza por debajo del 1 % en todos los casos, manteniendo, prácticamente en todos los escenarios, la diferencia de nivel de solución líquida entre ambos SC por debajo de 4 mm y un error de presión máximo de 0,5 %. Este proyecto de investigación pretende abordar la automatización de procesos desde una perspectiva distinta al de la ingeniería electrónica. Esto último se pretende implementar, a través del manejo de una metodología detallada y simple, para establecer un modelo adecuado para la automatización de una estación basada en la de un reactor de un sistema que emula un proceso industrial de embotellamiento de bebidas (en esta estación el objetivo principal es llevar el líquido a una temperatura deseada). El proceso inicia estudiando el sistema a partir de su funcionamiento para así determinar un modelo matemático que lo represente. Este último se valida a partir de unos criterios establecidos y, posteriormente, se implementa en un modelo de Simulink, herramienta que será utilizada a lo largo del proyecto para emular funcionamientos reales del sistema. Posteriormente se procede con la implementación del diseño de un controlador tipo PID en paralelo que permita llevar al sistema a temperaturas deseadas teniendo en cuenta los tiempos necesarios para llevar al sistema a una temperatura estable y el error que se genera entre la temperatura deseada y la resultante del ejercicio tienda a cero. Asimismo, se analizan puntos críticos en las respuestas del sistema después de ser sometido a diferentes escenarios. Esto último se lleva a cabo con ayuda de la herramienta Autotune disponible en el bloque de PID conectado al sistema en Simulink. Después del análisis de las diferentes opciones de control resultantes, se establecen cinco propuestas para el sistema en estudio. La elección de la propuesta final dependerá de las restricciones consideradas para el sistema real, así como de los objetivos de control establecidos en una situación específica. Se invita a que las consideraciones establecidas en la tabla final de las propuestas de control, para cada controlador, sean evaluadas a partir de un interés en específico

Els problemes de control automàtic poden ser extremadament difícils de resoldre per a qualsevol algoritme no adaptatiu. El control automàtic implica l'avaluació en temps real de les respostes d'un sistema que es retroalimenta sota condicions incertes. Aquestes circumstàncies d'incertesa són freqüents en diferents àrees d'enginyeria, que van des de simples controls de vàlvules fins a la conducció autònoma d'última generació. Tot i que s'ha demostrat que els algoritmes de control clàssics funcionen, actualment la tendència de crear sistemes altament complexos i més grans fa que els mètodes clàssics anteriors no sempre es puguin aplicar amb efectivitat. Això sol ser degut per la falta de dades per dissenyar el model matemàtic, o per tenir múltiples elements controlables dins del sistema. Veient com altres branques, com la Teoria de Jocs, modelen problemes amb aquestes característiques, proposem enfocaments procedents de l'Aprenentatge Per Reforç per resoldre aquest tipus de situacions en una metodologia basada en dades i sense models matemàtics. Concretament, presentem un estudi sobre diversos algoritmes d'aprenentatge de reforç multiagent i els apliquem als sistemes de drenatge urbà per provar-ne l'eficàcia. Els sistemes de drenatge urbà (UDS) són xarxes d'interconnexió de canonades i instal·lacions d'emmagatzematge que transporten les aigües residuals a les estacions de tractament d'aigües residuals, abans d'alliberar l'aigua a les masses d'aigua properes, eliminant-les de productes químics perillosos., Automatic Control problems can be extremely challenging for any non-adapting algorithm to solve. Control involves the real-time evaluation of system responses under uncertain circumstances, and can be encountered in different areas of engineering, ranging from simple valve controls to State-of-the-Art autonomous driving. While classical control algorithms have been proven to work, in a trend of creating more complex and larger systems these previous methods cannot be always applied. This is usually due to incomplete data to design the mathematical model, or having multiple controllable elements in a system. Seeing how these types of problem can be modeled with Game Theory, we propose approaches coming from Reinforcement Learning to solve these sorts of situations in a model-free data-driven methodology. Concretely, we present a study on various Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning algorithms and apply them on Urban Drainage Systems to test their efficacy. Urban Drainage Systems (UDS) are networks of interconnecting pipes and storage facilities that transport wastewater to Waste Water Treatment Plants, before releasing the water into nearby water bodies, removing them of dangerous chemicals.

Objectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::7 - Energia Assequible i No Contaminant::7.3 - Per a 2030, duplicar la taxa mundial de millora de l’eficiència energètica

Electrolyzers are systems which mission is to produce hydrogen by means of a chemical process called electrolysis. This process is capable of separating the hydrogen and oxygen molecules of the water by applying an electric current I. In that way, the hydrogen is produced in a sustainable way, since it is produced without emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In order to produce this hydrogen, there are several specifications that have to be accomplished by this high pressure alkaline electrolyzer, such as the difference between the liquid levels in both separation chambers (SCs), or the difference between the pressure of the H2 SC and the pressure of the storage tanks. The aim of this project is to develop a control strategy that achieves the desired specifications in order to increase the supplied gases purity. Since there are multiple objectives which need to be optimized in this problem, a model predictive controller (MPC) based on a multi-objective optimization problem is implemented during the development of this project. To address this problem, it is necessary to work over a control-oriented model of the electrolyzer, as well as over simulation-oriented models. These models are obtained based on several works found in the literature, with high-fidelity models previously implemented and evaluated. During the development of this project, different versions of MPCs are designed and simulated, depending on the tuning and prediction capabilities when disturbances in cur- rent and pressure are considered. The results of these MPCs are compared, as well as the differences yielded by the modification of some parameters of these MPCs. Several key performance indices (KPIs) are considered in order to compare the different versions of MPCs implemented, to facilitate the selection of the one with the best results and also in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed control approach.

En aquest treball examinem una problemàtica creada per la gran introducció d’energies renovables a les xarxes elèctriques. Una limitació de les energies renovables és la seva incertesa i intermitència. Abordarem el problema de control d'una xarxa elèctrica desd'un punt de vista probabilístic. Aquestes limitacions probabilístiques solen resoldre’s assumint una distribució a priori de les dades i treballant amb eines més estàndards a partir de l’optimització de restriccions probabilístiques, com ara els mètodes de valor condicional al risc (CVaR). Aquest treball ampliarà treballs existents anteriorment en modelització de xarxes energètiques. Considerem un flux de potència òptim subjecte a restriccions de potència de corrent continu i fonts d’energia intermitents, el problema es formula com un problema de control d’horitzó finit. Per fer front a la incertesa sense modelar, reformulem el problema com una optimització robusta en la distribució. Per tractabilitat, apliquem una transformació existent que condueix a un programa lineal enter mixt més senzill. També comparem aquesta reformulació amb l’aproximació CVaR. A continuació, avaluem en una simulació la viabilitat d’aquest mètode de control a l'estàndard de bus IEEE-14 i comprovem la seva robustesa amb casos crítics. Concloem que la reformulació dóna un bon rendiment quan hi ha prou dades. Una bona elecció de paràmetres i conèixer les compensacions que s’estan fent són claus per millorar el resultat desitjat., En este trabajo se analiza la problemática creada por la gran introducción de energías renovables en las redes eléctricas. Una limitación de las energías renovables es su incertidumbre e intermitencia, estas características obligan a replantear la manera en la opera el contorl de la red. Abordaremos el problema de control de redes eléctricas desde un punto de vista probabilísto. Esto se traduce en que problemas de optimización con restricciones probabilísticas suelen resolverse asumiendo una distribución a priori de los datos y trabajando con herramientas más estándar de optimización de restricciones de azar, como los métodos de valor en riesgo condicional (CVaR). Este trabajo amplia los trabajos realizados anteriormente en la modelización de redes de energía. Consideramos un flujo de potencia óptimo sujeto a restricciones de red en corriente continua y fuentes de energía intermitentes, el problema se formula como un problema de control de horizonte finito. Para hacer frente a la incertidumbre no modelada, reformulamos el problema como una optimización distributivamente robusta. Para facilitar la trazabilidad, aplicamos una transformación existente que conduce a un programa lineal entero mixto más sencillo. También comparamos esta reformulación con la aproximación CVaR. A continuación, evaluamos en una simulación la viabilidad de este método como de control en el caso práctico de la red IEEE-14 y comprobamos su robustez con escenarios de casos críticos. Concluimos que la reformulación ofrece un buen rendimiento cuando hay suficientes datos. Una buena elección de los parámetros y el conocimiento de las compensaciones que se hacen son claves para mejorar el resultado deseado., In this work we look at a main problem created by the large introduction of renewable energy in power grids. A limitation of renewable energy is its uncertainty and intermittency. This probabilistic constraints are usually solved by assuming an a priori distribution of the data and working with more standard tools from chance constraint optimization such as Conditional Value-at-risk (CVaR) methods. This work will be expanding on previously existing work in energy grid modelling. We consider an optimal power flow problem subject to DC power flow constraints and uncertain energy sources, the problem is formulated as a finite horizon control problem. To deal with unmodelled uncertainty we reformulate the problem as distributionally robust optimization. For tractability we apply an existing transformation that leads to a simpler mixed integer linear program. We will also compare this reformulation with the CVaR approximation and explore their relationships. Then we evaluate in a simulation the practicality of this method by simulating it in the IEEE-14 bus standard test case and we test their robustness with critical case scenarios. We conclude that the reformulation gives good performance when there is enough data. In most models good parameter tuning is key for improving the desired outcome. We see that in all scenarios improving robustness usually decrease performance cost so there is a trade off to be made.

Autonomous systems are no longer confined to factories, but they are progressively spreading to urban, social, and assistive domains. However, in order to become handy co-workers and helpful assistants, robots must be endowed with quite different abilities than their industrial ancestors, and a lot of additional research is still required. A key challenge in intelligent robotics is creating autonomous agents that are capable of directly interacting with the world around them to achieve their goals. Learning plays a central role in intelligent autonomous systems, as the real world contains too much uncertainty and a robot must be capable of dealing with environments that neither it nor its designers have foreseen. Learning from demonstration is a promising paradigm that allows robots to learn complex tasks that cannot be easily scripted, but can be demonstrated by a human teacher. In this thesis, we develop complete learning from demonstration framework. We first present a whole-body teleoperation approach for human motion transfer, which allows a teacher equipped with a motion capture system to intuitively provide demonstrations to a robot. Then, to learn a generalized rep- resentation of the task which can be adapted to unforeseen scenarios, we unify in a single, entirely Gaussian-Process-based formulation, the main components of a state-of-the-art method. We evaluate our approach through a series of real-world experiments with the manipulator robot TIAGo, achieving satisfactory results. Finally, we must be aware that we are in a technological inflection point in which robots are developing the capacity to greatly increase their cognitive and physical capabilities. This will raise complex issues regarding the economy, ethics, law, and the environment, which we provide an overview of in this thesis. In this project, a Torque Vectoring algorithm for a Formula Student vehicle with four inwheel electrical machines is designed and tested. This algorithm includes the development of a Quasi-LPV bicycle model, the design of a Proportional-Integral yaw rate controller and the statement and solution of a Torque Distribution multi-objective optimization problem. Data analysis and the information that can be extracted from this process is explained and discussed, as it is a fundamental procedure for each of the control modules that are going to be developed. Also a vehicle dynamics introduction is presented in order to enable a better understanding of every step that has been done throughout the project. Finally, all the results obtained from the resultant Torque Vectoring control system are presented and discussed with its consequent conclusions.

En este proyecto se crea una herramienta capaz de discernir entre tres consonantes fricativas del árabe, dos de ellas consideradas sonidos comunes y una de ellas considerada particular del árabe. Esta herramienta consiste en un modelo creado con código Python en la aplicación web Jupyter Notebook a partir del algoritmo de inteligencia artificial conocido como Análisis de Discriminante Lineal. Cuando este modelo recibe la información relativa a una de estas consonantes, el sistema devuelve el fonema correspondiente según lo que ha aprendido a partir de muestras anteriores. La información relativa a cada consonante viene dada por un vector de valores de parámetros acústicos seleccionados a partir de investigaciones de vanguardia anteriores y la propia verificación sobre la relevancia de estos parámetros a la hora de diferenciar entre las consonantes realizada en este proyecto mediante el método estadístico de ANOVA en Minitab. Para extraer los parámetros de las grabaciones de sonido de cada consonante se utiliza el programa de análisis fonético del habla conocido como Praat. Adicionalmente, se realiza un estudio con 15 individuos con tres idiomas nativos distintos (catalán, castellano e italiano), que no hablan el árabe, para comprobar la capacidad de pronunciar correctamente sonidos ajenos y la correlación de esta con el idioma nativo. El modelo resultó ser eficaz y veraz, no obstante, no se pudo establecer una correlación entre el idioma nativo y la correcta pronunciación de los sonidos desconocidos.

Vehicle dynamic controls are a very important aspect in the automotive industry, especially in electric or hybrid vehicles, as they allow the car to obtain a better driving performance and power-train management systems. In racing cars, the control systems related to power distribution such as the Torque Vectoring are especially important and they open an amount of possibilities related to the tire forces distribution in order to increase the vehicle dynamics behavior and obtain the maximum efficiency possible. They include the control and use of tire forces, which is a difficult task specially because of their nonlinearities, as they are the only points of interaction with the road and they limit the dynamic behavior of the car. In this work, the lateral vehicle dynamics are analyzed and modeled so a tire cornering force estimator can be designed and integrated to the current Torque Vectoring control system of a Formula Student vehicle to improve its performance. Four different observers (a Luenberger, Extended Kalman Filter, Unscented Kalman Filter and a Moving Horizon Estimator) that will be analyzed and compared are designed with matlab and CasADi and simulated with the IPG CarMaker software in order to validate them. It is a full simulation work and it will require of a future implementation in the actual car. The lateral dynamics of the car are modeled using a seven-variable state-space representation, which is discretized and validated during the project. The different parameters of the observers are tuned so they estimate the tire forces properly and the estimators are finally compared according to some Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) so one of the four estimation options is chosen as the best observer to integrate in the car. The final conclusion of the work is that the Moving Horizon Estimator proposed is the best option to estimate the tire cornering forces properly as it meets all the necessary requirements to be integrated in the car and it can be use

Nowadays, we are entering into the data era. Day to day more devices work with sensors, data, and intelligent systems. All this technology wants to make our lives more comfortable providing us with innovative tools. This project, entitled Design and simulation of a laboratory with cobots, is focused on starting the path to a collaborative clinic laboratory. It has been noticed that in this environment, high-qualified personal spends a lot of their time into very repetitive and valueless tasks, such as change samples rack, or more precise skills as pipetting. Its implementation could involve a huge increase in sample testing speed. Today more than ever, due to the COVID-19 crisis, have been demonstrated that this productivity could be a bottleneck process on healthcare. This means that the number of treated patients is directly correlated with testing speed. This study is based on three interconnected branches. The design of a new lab mapping method, the implementation of a pipetting task on a cobot, and the development of software that schedules lab tasks, and communicates with the robots/staff. By the development of these three tools, it is expected an approach to understand such a chaotic environment, locate the optimal tasks, and implement them. Reaching those goals will imply an approach on the implementation of cobots in clinical laboratories a more realistic trend.

For many people with upper limb disabilities, simple activities of daily living such as drinking, opening a door, or pushing an elevator button require the assistance of a caregiver; which reduces the independence of the individual. Assistive robotic systems controlled via human-robot interface could enable these people to perform this kind of tasks autonomously again and thereby increase their independence and quality of life. Moreover, this interface could encourage rehabilitation of motor functions because the individual would require to perform its remaining body movements and muscle activity to provide control signals. This project aims at developing a novel hybrid control interface that combines remaining movements and muscle activity of the upper body to control position and impedance of a robotic manipulator. This thesis presents a Cartesian position control system for KINOVA Gen3 robotic arm, which performs a proportional-derivative control low based to the Jacobian transpose method, that does not require inverse kinematics. A second control is proposed to change the robot’s rigidity in real-time based on measurements of muscle activity (sEMG). This control allows the user to modulate the robot’s impedance while performing a task. Moreover, it presents a body-machine interface that maps the motions of the upper body (head and shoulders) to the space of robot control signals. Its uses the principal component analysis algorithm for dimensionality reduction. The results demonstrate that combining the three methods presented above, the user can control robot positions with head and shoulders movements, while also adapting the robot’s impedance depending on its muscle activation. In the future work the performance of this system is going to be tested in patients with severe movement impairments.

L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi és l’anàlisi i el control d’un sistema de Lur’e, és a dir, un sistema amb un camí directe lineal i invariant en el temps i amb una realimentació no lineal estàtica, amb restriccions de sector i de pendent en les seves no-linealitats. Aquesta descripció engloba una àmplia classe de sistemes que apareixen comunament en una àmplia gamma de disciplines d’enginyeria. L’enfocament d’aquest treball es basa en la teoria d’estabilitat de Lyapunov i utilitza desigualtats de matrius lineals per proposar criteris per a l’estabilitat absoluta del sistema i els guanys l2 i RMS, i desigualtats de matrius bilineals per proposar criteris per al seu control per realimentació d’estat i estimació d’estat. Aquest tipus de condicions, en particular les desigualtats de matrius lineals, són convenients de tractar computacionalment, ja que els problemes d’optimització a que donen lloc són convexos. S’obtenen resultats numèrics per a diversos exemples, els quals mostren una millora significativa respecte a les condicions anteriors de la literatura., El objetivo de esta tesis es el análisis y el control de un sistema de Lur’e, es decir, un sistema con un camino directo lineal e invariante en el tiempo y con una realimentación no lineal estática, con restricciones de sector y de pendiente en sus no-linealidades. Esta de- scripción engloba una amplia clase de sistemas que aparecen comúnmente en una amplia gama de disciplinas de ingeniería. El enfoque de este trabajo se basa en la teoría de estabilidad de Lyapunov y utiliza desigualdades de matrices lineales para proponer criterios para la estabil- idad absoluta del sistema y las ganancias l2 y RMS, y desigualdades de matrices bilineales para proponer criterios para su control por realimentación de estado y estimación de estado. Se obtienen resultados numéricos para varios ejemplos, los cuales muestran una mejora significativa respecto a las condiciones anteriores de la literatura., The aim of this thesis is to analyze and control a Lur’e system, i.e., a system with a linear time-invariant forward path and a nonlinear static feedback with sector and slope constraints on its nonlinearities. This description encompasses a broad class of systems that commonly arise in a wide range of engineering disciplines. The approach of this work is based on Lyapunov stability theory and uses linear matrix inequalities to propose criteria for the system’s absolute stability and l2- and RMS-gains, and bilinear matrix inequalities to propose criteria for state feedback control and state estimation. These types of conditions, in particular linear matrix inequalities, are conveniently treated computationally, as the optimization problems that they give rise to are convex. This project presents and discusses the coupled tank system physical model. For this, the automation of the plant has to be manufactured and designed. In the the plant modeling, the physical model of a published article (Johansson, 2000) (1) is discussed. When trying to replicate Johansson's experiment and the successive experiments in this lab, the need to improve the physical model appeared. In a first attempt, we tried to link the pressure to the model, to improve the filling part of the upper tanks. This part was solved with empirical models, but even so the GAP was not corrected. In a second attempt, an attempt was made to improve the discharge model and it was understood that there were incorrect starting assumptions. Therefore, we chose to create a completely new download model. The plant has been automated by its own manufacture, since the manufacturer (Feedback Instruments (2)) does not give any option for the purchase or expansion of an automated plant. In the design of the plant with CAD-3D: the initial plant is drawn, a prototype of automatic flow control valve is built and a box of electrical connections is designed with the help of CAD software. In the manufacture of the hardware: 3D plastic parts of coupling and clamping are printed for the automatic valves, the plastic parts are assembled with the servomotors, the electric circuit is manufactured and the connection box is built. In the software design, the basic software functions (open, close, measure, etc ...) of the existing sensors, as well as the new ones, are carried out. No se pide para el Master, Este proyecto presenta y discute el modelado físico de un sistema de tanques acoplados. Para ello, ha de ser diseñada y fabricada la automatización de la planta. En el modelado de la planta, se discute el modelo físico de un artículo publicado (Johansson, 2000) [1]. Al tratar de replicar el experimento de Johansson y los sucesivos experimentos en este laboratorio, apareció la necesidad de mejorar el modelo físico. En un primer intento, se trató de vincular la presión al modelo, para mejorar la parte de llenado de los tanques superiores. Esta parte, se solvento con modelos empíricos, pero aun así la diferencia (GAP) no fue corregida. En un segundo intento, se trató de mejorar el modelo de descarga y se comprendió que había suposiciones de partida incorrectas. Por lo tanto, se optó por crear un modelo de descarga totalmente nuevo. La planta ha de ser automatizada mediante fabricación propia, ya que el fabricante (Feedback Instruments [2]) no da ninguna opción para la compra o ampliación de una planta automatizada. En el diseño de la planta con CAD-3D: se dibuja la planta inicial, se construye un prototipo de válvula automática de control de flujo y se diseña una caja de conexiones eléctricas con ayuda del software CAD. En la fabricación del hardware: se imprimen en 3D piezas plásticas de acople y sujeción para las válvulas automáticas, se ensamblan las piezas plásticas con los servomotores, se fabrica el circuito eléctrico y se construye la caja de conexiones. En el diseño de software, se realizan las funciones básicas de software (abrir, cerrar, medir, etc...) de los sensores existentes, así como de los nuevos. Finalmente, se ensamblan estas funciones en programas finales con diversas funciones. Los programas pueden medir los caudales o pueden realizar experimentos en los que haya diferentes escalones estabilizados, para una identificación de la planta.

Game theoretical approaches have been used in several engineering fields, e.g., drainage wastewater systems, bandwidth allocation, wireless networks, cyber security, congestion games, wind turbines, temperature control, among others. On the other hand, a specific class of games, known as population games, have been mainly used in the design of controllers to manage a limited resource. This game approach is suitable for resource allocation problems since, under the framework of full-potential games, the population games can satisfy a unique coupled constraint while maximizing a potential function. First, this thesis discusses how the classical approach of the population games can contribute and complement the design of optimization-based controllers. Therefore, this dissertation assigns special interest on how the features of the population-game approach can be exploited extending their capabilities in the solution of distributed optimization problems. In addition, density games are studied in order to consider multiple coupled constraints and preserving the non-centralized information requirements. Furthermore, it is established a close relationship between the possible interactions among agents in a population with the constrained information sharing among different local controllers. On the other hand, coalitional games are discussed focusing on the Shapley power index. This power index has been used to assign an appropriate rewarding to players in function of their contributions to all possible coalitions. Even though this power index is quite useful in the engineering context, since it involves notions of fairness and/or relevance (how important players are), the main difficulty of the implementation of the Shapley value in engineering applications is related to the high computational burden. Therefore, this dissertation, Esta tesis doctoral consiste principalmente en el estudio del rol que desempeña la teoría de juegos evolutiva en el diseño de controladores distribuidos basados en optimización. Diversos enfoques de la teoría de juegos han sido usados en múltiples campos de la ingeniera, por ejemplo, en sistemas de drenaje urbano, para la asignación de anchos de banda, en redes inalámbricas, en ciber-seguridad, en juegos de congestión, turbinas eólicas, control de temperatura, entre otros. Por otra parte, una clase especifica de juegos, conocidos como juegos poblacionales, se han usado principalmente en el diseño de controladores encargados de determinar la apropiada asignación de recursos. Esta clase de juegos es apropiada para problemas de distribución dinámica de recursos dado que, en el contexto de juegos poblacionales, los juegos poblacionales pueden ser usados para maximizar una función potencial mientras se satisface una restricción acoplada. The goal of the project is to develop an interactive robotic system that will provide proactive assistance with dressing to disabled users or health-care workers whose physical contact with garments must be limited to avoid contamination. The project will explore gesture and force as modalities of human-robot interaction. A framework that integrates these two modalities will be developed to recognize user's intentions while being dressed by the robot. The framework will be tested on a Barrett WAM robot equipped with a Kinect camera for user tracking and a force sensor.

This thesis presents and discusses the possibility of the use of online model predictive control as the control strategy, embedded in an educational device from National Instruments. The work considers the use of different optimization solvers and code generators, which have come out in recent years by the academia, to control a four-tank pilot plant located in the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial, CSIC-UPC. The mathematical model of the system, used to implement the optimization-based controllers, includes nonlinear dynamics, whereby two approaches have been discussed and implemented: linearizing the model around an operating point to design a linear predictive controller, and using the original nonlinear dynamics to design a nonlinear predictive controller. The experiments performed for the case studied shown the suitability of the obtained model to be used in the linear case, while less accuracy is obtained in the nonlinear case due to the approximation of the dynamics previously reported in the literature. Moreover, a possible implementation and embedding procedure for the designed controllers are both presented and discussed in detail. For the given implementation, an assessment between the solvers embedded in the real-time device is done, giving an evaluation of the suitability of each solver in the considered scenarios. Finally, this work opens different ways of future work not only in the adaptation of the dynamic model of the case studied, but also in the optimization of the software codes generated to design the real-time controllers.

Urban drainage systems (UDSs) are complex large-scale systems that carry stormwater and wastewater throughout urban areas. During heavy rain scenarios, UDSs are not able to handle the amount of extra water that enters the network and flooding occurs. Usually, this might happen because the network is not being used efficiently, i.e., some structures remain underused while many others are overused. This thesis proposes a control methology based on mean field game theory and model predictive control that aims to efficiently use the existing network elements in order to minimize overflows and properly manage the water resource. The proposed controller is tested on a UDS located in the city of Barcelona, Spain, and is compared with a centralized MPC achieving similar results in terms of flooding minimization and wastewater treatement plant usage, but only using local information on non-centralized controllers and using less computation times.

Este proyecto de fin de carrera tiene como objetivo la creación de una infraestructura tanto física como de software que facilite y economice la investigación robótica sobre el aprendizaje cognitivo. Además, del desarrollo de herramientas de software que simplifiquen el uso de sonido en investigación robótica. Para ello, se ha diseñado y construido un robot. La estructura del mismo ha sido elaborada usando software de diseños 3D para poder ser generada a través de impresoras 3D. El fin de esta decisión recae en poder facilitar su reproducción por todos aquellos que así lo deseen. Por otro lado, el hardware usado es el más económico posible a excepción de aquellos componentes que tienen un especial interés para su investigación como posible hardware dentro del mundo de la robótica. El diseño en general está inspirado en las teorías de robótica social y cognitiva, siguiendo a su vez el principio de economía en el diseño. A nivel de software, se ha desarrollado una serie de herramientas que permiten simular entornos virtuales sonoros y procesar los sonidos generados internamente por una computadora. Además, se ha creado un software para el aprendizaje robótico no supervisado, basándose en modelos matemáticos que se aproximan al funcionamiento cerebral del ser humano. Por último, se ha realizado un experimento a modo de entrenamiento de la estructura de aprendizaje para evaluar si era posible con la infraestructura software creada, y como sistema de evaluación el de la efectividad de las teorías aplicadas, poder reconocer el tono emocional en el que alguien está hablando independientemente del idioma usado. Como resultado, se ha obtenido un robot completo con los elementos esenciales que permiten la investigación en aprendizaje robótico en robots físicos. Siendo además este robot de un precio de fabricación bajo y modular. En este proyecto se pretenden poner en práctica los conocimientos adquiridos durante el transcurso de la carrera. Para ello, se ha diseñado y construido un dispositivo de iluminación, cuyas funcionalidades se controlan desde una aplicación desarrollada para sistemas móviles Android. Este dispositivo toma el nombre de “Globo LED” debido a su forma y la tecnología usada para su iluminación y su funcionamiento está basado en el fenómeno de la persistencia de la visión (mismo principio usado en el cine o la televisión). La decisión de llevar a cabo este proyecto se ha tomado basándose, no solo en poner en práctica los conocimientos adquiridos, sino también en ampliarlos y obtener algunos nuevos. Además, se considera un proyecto original, a la par que entretenido, que puede ser explotado en diferentes sectores (como la educación o publicidad). En esta memoria, se detalla todo el proceso seguido para el diseño e implementación de este dispositivo, de manera que, cualquier persona, mínimamente cualificada, pueda llevar a cabo un proyecto similar a partir de los pasos e indicaciones explicadas aquí., This project is intended to expose the knowledge acquired during the degree. The decision taken to carry out this project comes, not only to demonstrate the author's knowledge, but also to improve them and acquire new. In addition, this project is considered original and entertained, and also can be exploited in different sectors (such as education or advertising). The pasteurization process is one of the most common treatments in the food industries in order to eliminate harmful pathogenic and spoilage microorganism. The process consists in maintaining a high temperature stablished during a short period of time (HTST). Most of the pasteurization plants are controlled by tradicional PID (ProportionasIntegral-Derivative). Much effort has been made to develop advanced controllers. However, an accurate model that describes the system is required. The main of the present project is to develop a dynamical model for a pasteurization plant for a real-time control. Experimental plant consists in a small-scale pasteurization plant PCT23 MKII completely monitorized owned by the enterprise Armfield. The first task refers to modelling the different elements of the plant. Each one is modelled using the physical principles resulting a nonlinear model. Different parameters of the proposed model are later estimated by experimental data. Finally, the complete model is validated by new experimental data. Linear parameter-varying (LPV) model represents a class of non-linear systems that can be controlled using powerful linear-like techniques. As a nonlinear model is proposed to describe the real system, the second task refers to develop LPV) model. Results shows that the proposed models fit the experimental data with an error lower than a 3 %. Advanced controllers could be designed using these models. As a first approach a PID controller has been designed. The control objective is leading the controlled variables (temperatures) in order to reach the set point rejecting the disturbances.

This project proposes a reliable fault-tolerant MPC applied to DWTNs. The proposed approach the proposed approach allows to carry out a degradation analysis of the system in terms of performance and reliability. As a result of this analysis, the MPC controller design can be modified adapting the constraints such that the best achievable performance with some pre-stablished level of reliability will be achieved. The proposed approach will be tested on the Barcelona Water network.

This thesis designs a method to control a quadrotor equipped with a robotic arm. The arm has been developed in Institut de Rob otica i Inform atica Industrial (CSIC-UPC), namely here IRI. During the project, an algorithm has been made as a rst approximation to control a quadrotor that is working with the robotic arm. In order to compensate the perturbations of the arm's dynamic, a NMPC algorithm has been chosen while others have been discarded as it is discussed in the state of the art (PID, Linear Model Predictive Control or LQR). PID and model predictive control have been discarded because is not possible to handle the nonlinearities of the system studied and reach the desired control objectives. Also there are no possibilites to restrict the system using physical constraints. Finally, three scenarios have been simulated and tested to verify the performances and robustness of the designed method. A takeo maneuver, where the quadrotor reaches a speci c altitude. A hover mode where the system should compensate the dynamics of the arm while it is static or it is in movement. Finally, the quadorotor has to move to a speci c point in the space while the arm it is static or in movement. The goal of the controller is to reject the perturbation due the movement of the arm and stabilize the system. This thesis presents the results obtained after simulating the designed controller with the scenarios considered.

This thesis is devoted to design Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategies aiming to enhance the management of constrained generalised flow-based networks, with special attention to the economic optimisation and robust performance of such systems. Several control schemes are developed in this thesis to exploit the available economic information of the system operation and the disturbance information obtained from measurements and forecasting models. Dynamic network flows theory is used to develop control-oriented models that serve to design MPC controllers specialised for flow networks with additive disturbances and periodically time-varying dynamics and costs. The control strategies developed in this thesis can be classified in two categories: centralised MPC strategies and non-centralised MPC strategies. Such strategies are assessed through simulations of a real case study: the Barcelona drinking water network (DWN). Regarding the centralised strategies, different economic MPC formulations are first studied to guarantee recursive feasibility and stability under nominal periodic flow demands and possibly time-varying economic parameters and multi-objective cost functions. Additionally, reliability-based MPC, chance-constrained MPC and tree-based MPC strategies are proposed to address the reliability of both the flow storage and the flow transportation tasks in the network. Such strategies allow to satisfy a customer service level under future flow demand uncertainty and to efficiently distribute overall control effort under the presence of actuators degradation. Moreover, soft-control techniques such as artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic are used to incorporate self-tuning capabilities to an economic certainty-equivalent MPC controller. Since there are objections to the use of centralised controllers in large-scale networks, two non-centralised strategies are also proposed. First, a multi-layer distributed economic MPC strategy of low computational complexi, Esta tesis se enfoca en el diseño de estrategias de control predictivo basado en modelos (MPC, por sus siglas en inglés) con la meta de mejorar la gestión de sistemas que pueden ser descritos por redes generalizadas de flujo y que están sujetos a restricciones, enfatizando especialmente en la optimización económica y el desempeño robusto de tales sistemas. De esta manera, varios esquemas de control se desarrollan en esta tesis para explotar tanto la información económica disponible de la operación del sistema como la información de perturbaciones obtenida de datos medibles y de modelos de predicción. La teoría de redes dinámicas de flujo es utilizada en esta tesis para desarrollar modelos orientados a control que sirven para diseñar controladores MPC especializados para la gestión de redes de flujo que presentan tanto perturbaciones aditivas como dinámicas y costos periódicamente variables en el tiempo. Las estrategias de control propuestas en esta tesis se pueden clasificar en dos categorías: estrategias de control MPC centralizado y estrategias de control MPC no-centralizado. Dichas estrategias son evaluadas mediante simulaciones de un caso de estudio real: la red de transporte de agua potable de Barcelona en España. En cuanto a las estrategias de control MPC centralizado, diferentes formulaciones de controladores MPC económicos son primero estudiadas para garantizar factibilidad recursiva y estabilidad del sistema cuya operación responde a demandas nominales de flujo periódico, a parámetros económicos posiblemente variantes en el tiempo y a funciones de costo multi-objetivo. Adicionalmente, estrategias de control MPC basado en fiabilidad, MPC con restricciones probabilísticas y MPC basado en árboles de escenarios son propuestas para garantizar la fiabilidad tanto de tareas de almacenamiento como de transporte de flujo en la red. En el Projecte Final de Carrera (PFC) que es presenta a continuació, s’obté un nou disseny d’un controlador predictiu no lineal (NMPC: Nonlinear Model Predictive Control ) per a un reformador d’Etanol amb Vapor (ESR: Ethanol Steam Reformer ) utilitzat per a la producció d’hidrogen pur per una Pila de Combustible (PEM: Proton Exchange Membrane). Es realitza un model matemàtic del sistema a partir de les equacions de balanç de massa i energia del reactor catalític i la membrana de separació del Reformador d’Etanol amb Vapor. Aquest estudi s’ha basat en models matemàtics per a l’ESR de la biblio- grafia existent, en els que s’hi ha realitzat diverses modificacions. A partir del model, s’analitza la dina`mica i l’estat estacionari del sistema, obtenint un punt d’operació per a la minimitzacio´ del cost de producció de l’hidrogen. El controlador dissenyat és un NMPC degut a les restriccions i a l’alta no linealitat del sistema. El controlador utilitza directament les equacions diferencials cont´ınues i no lineals del model matemàtic com a model de simulació, i conté un model intern realitzat mitjançant la tècnica del mostreig de les dades. A partir de l’anàlisi de resultats del model i del controlador, es conclou amb la viabilitat de l’estratègia i estructura de control proposades i la possibilitat de garantir el funcionament del controlador a temps real.

In this thesis, a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) strategy is proposed to regulate the humidity and pressure in a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) anode. The proposed control strategy uses two controllers in cascade to control the humidity and pressure in the anode, separately. This approach is used in order to overcome the difficulties caused by two dynamics with time-constants orders of magnitude apart. The inner loop, with the fastest dynamics, regulates the pressure in the anode with the set-point provided by the outer loop. The outer loop regulates the relative humidity in the anode using the temperature in the anode humidifier and also the reference pressure in the anode. The controllers developed in this thesis are based on the explicit non-linear equations describing the mass balances in the fuel cell. With this strategy, safety and performance constraints for pressure and humidity can be guaranteed and external disturbances, as changes in stack current demand, are rejected. Simulation results are presented to show the capabilities of the proposed controller under different settings and control laws. The results obtained show satisfactory regulation of the humidity and pressure with promising performance regulating the humidity with the pressure constrained to a single value. The approach followed can be used to extend this design to the anode and cathode of similar PEMFC systems with similar characteristics.

En aquest Treball de Fi de Grau es realitza una introducció al llenguatge Modelica amb l'estudi de dos casos: un motor de contínua i el continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). El primer cas es realitza com a introducció al llenguatge de modelització i estarà regulat mitjançant un controlador proporcional-integral (PI). Amb el segon cas es realitza l'estudi de quatre tancs CSTR els quals es regulen mitjançant un controlador òptim per mantenir les respectives concentracions a unes referències desitjades. Aquest segon cas d'estudi està dividit en tres problemes: un problema d'una entrada i una sortida, un problema múltiple entrades única sortida i una distribució dinàmica de recursos. Aquests dos problemes s'implementen mitjançant dues eines que utilitzen Modelica: OpenModelica i JModelica.org per al primer i segon cas d'estudi respectivament. El treball té un objectiu netament introductori en quant es vol demostrar, de manera pràctica, la manera com dos sistemes reals es modelen a partir de les lleis físiques que regeixen el seu comportament el qual implica certa complexitat en l'adecuació i tractament del model dinàmic. Adicionalment, s'implementen controladors òptims senzills que regulen els sistemes per cumplir els objectius de control desitjats.

Combined sewer networks carry wastewater and storm water together. During normal operation all the water is delivered to wastewater treatment plants, where it is treated before being released to surrounding natural water bodies. However, during heavy rain events, the network capacity may become insufficient leading to untreated water discharges to the receiving environments. To mitigate these undesired effects, combined sewer networks are usually provided with detention tanks and flow redirection elements, managed to fully take advantage of the network capacity. In the last few decades automatic control techniques for the regulation of these storage and redirection elements have been developed, with real-time, global, model-based predictive ones being widely regarded as the most efficient ones due to their capacity to take advantage of instantaneous network measurements and rain intensity forecasts. In this thesis a complete methodology to develop a real-time, global, model-based predictive controller to minimize pollution effects in combined sewer networks is proposed. The physically-based model for open-channel flow is based on a set of partial differential equations, which must be solved numerically. Since in a real-time predictive control strategy the model equations must be solved many times to evaluate the effect of different control actions, the time needed to solve the equations limits the use of the physically-based model to small network instances with simple topologies. Therefore, it is a common practice to use simplified control-oriented models for real-time control. The first part of the thesis is focused on the development, calibration and validation of a simplified control-oriented model for water transport in combined sewer networks, taking into account three main features: accuracy, calibration ease and computational speed. The proposed model describes the flows through the most common elements and hydraulic structures present in combined sewer netw, Les xarxes de clavegueram combinades transporten conjuntament aigües residuals i aigües pluvials. En absència de pluges, tota l'aigua és conduïda cap a plantes de tractament on és degudament tractada abans de ser retornada als cossos aquàtics adjacents. En canvi, durant episodis de pluja intensa, la capacitat de la xarxa pot esdevenir insuficient donant lloc a inundacions en zones urbanes i abocaments d'aigua no tractada als medis receptors. Per tal de mitigar aquests efectes, les xarxes de clavegueram combinades acostumen a disposar de dipòsits de retenció i elements de redistribució del cabal, regulats amb la finalitat d'aprofitar al màxim la capacitat de la xarxa. En les últimes dècades s'han desenvolupat tècniques de control automàtic per a la regulació d'aquests elements d'emmagatzematge i redistribució, essent el control a temps real, global i predictiu basat en models la tècnica considerada més eficient, donat que és capaç de tenir en compte mesures instantànies del sistema i prediccions d'intensitat de pluja. En aquesta tesi, es proposa una metodologia completa per al desenvolupament d'un controlador a temps real, global i predictiu basat en model per minimitzar els efectes contaminants en xarxes de clavegueram combinades. El model físic que descriu els fluxos en canals oberts es basa en un sistema d'equacions en derivades parcials que s'ha de resoldre numèricament. Com que en una estratègia de control predictiu a temps real les equacions del model s'han de resoldre moltes vegades per avaluar els efectes de diferents accions de control, el temps necessari per resoldre les equacions limita l'ús del model físic a xarxes petites i amb topologies simples. This thesis firstly proposes a new approach of modelling an ethanol steam reformer (ESR) for producing pure hydrogen. Hydrogen has obvious benefits as an alternative for feeding the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) to produce electricity. However, an important drawback is that the hydrogen distribution and storage have high cost. So the ESR is regarded as a way to overcome these difficulties. Ethanol is currently considered as a promising energy source under the research for its renewable and easy-access. The modelled reformer has been divided into two stages in order to miximize the output of pure hydrogen. Specifically, the hydrogen is generated in the first stage by steam reforming (SR) over the Cobalt-based catalysts. The second stage is used to purify the hydrogen from the mixture gas through a Pd-Ag membrane separation. Unlike the conventional way, the two stages are carried out in a same module, since only one heating device is required. The main idea of the modelling approach is to develop a one-dimensional, pseudo-homogeneous and non-steady-state model based on the mass balance. Finite difference method is applied to transform the partial differential equations (PDEs) into ordinary differential equations (ODEs). This thesis is devoted to developing a robust Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy based on Gaussian Processes (GP), especially for Drinking Water Networks (DWN). Nowadays there are many different MPC strategies developed for DWN, such as certain-equivalent MPC (CEMPC) and chance-constrained MPC (CC-MPC). The general control objectives for DWN are economic by managing the water supply to minimise water production and transport costs, all the tanks running in safe ways with their limitations and reducing the undesired abrupt changes by minimising their slew rate and obtaining smooth signals. For the deterministic system model, the control objectives are elementary fulfilled. But the main challenge for DWN is to propagate and incorporate exogenous and endogenous uncertainties to MPC closed loop over the prediction horizon. Considering the control-oriented model of the DWN, the MPC controller design is hereby divided into two parts: system disturbances forecasting and the robust MPC controller design. Case studies based on Barcelona DWN have been executed to verify the performance of proposed methodologies. The first part of this thesis leads to forecast system disturbances by using GP. In a DWN system, system disturbances come mainly water demands associated to consumer sectors. Hence, it is necessary to model each water demand and forecast the water demand in a short term that covers the MPC prediction horizon. GP regression is regarded as one of state-of-the-art regression methods able to select model parameters by using Bayesian Inference theory with a collection of past data. Besides, it is believed that the GP regression method has a difficult for the multiple-step ahead forecasting. Hence, the Double-seasonal Holt-winters method is used for forecasting the expected disturbances while the stochastic disturbances are forecasted by using GP. The fault-tolerant capability is an important performance specification for most of technical systems. The examples showing its importance are some catastrophes in civil aviation. According to some official investigations, some air incidents are technically avoidable if the pilots can take right measures. But, relying on the skill and experience of the pilots, it cannot be guaranteed that reliable flight decisions are always made. Instead, if fault-tolerant strategies can be included in the decision-making procedure, it will be very useful for safer flight. Fault-tolerant control is generally classified into passive and active fault-tolerant control. Passive fault-tolerant control relies on robustness of controller, which can only provide limited fault-tolerant ability, while active fault-tolerant control turns to a fault detection and isolation module to obtain fault information and then actively take actions to tolerate the effect of faults. Thus, active fault-tolerant control generally has stronger fault-tolerant ability. In this dissertation, one focuses on active fault-tolerant control, which for this case considers model predictive control and set-based fault detection and isolation. Model predictive control is a successful advanced control strategy in process industry and has been widely used for processes such as chemistry and water treatment, because of its ability to deal with multivariable constrained systems. However, the performance of model redictive control has deep dependence on system-model accuracy. Realistically, it is impossible to avoid the effect of modelling errors, disturbances, noises and faults, which always result in model mismatch. Comparatively, model mismatch induced by faults is possible to be effectively handled by suitable fault-tolerant strategies. El control pasivo se basa en la robustez del controlador, el cual sólo provee una habilidad limitada de tolerancia a fallos, mientras que el control tolerante a fallos de tipo activo se convierte en un modulo de detección y aislamiento de fallos que permite obtener información de éstos, y luego, activamente, tomar acciones para tolerar el efecto de dichos fallos. This thesis affords the tuning of a multi-objective predictive controller, particularly designed for the Barcelona’s drinking water network. Predictive controller objectives have been established taking into account the minimisation of three criteria; the first one considers economic costs involved in the distribution process; second one takes into account tank’s safety volumes; and the third penalises excessive variations in control actions. Disturbances usually affect the operational conditions in which an automatic control strategy evolves along time. In the drinking water network (DWN) predictive control strategy, consumer demands have been modelled as measured disturbances. It is primordial to ensure an effective rejection of those measured disturbances, respecting to the controller objectives. Through this thesis, functionalities of the DWN system are illustrated as well as the predictive control strategy used to solve the multi-objective optimisation problem; later, methods to explore the space of non-dominated solutions, known as Pareto front, are exposed and a strategy to choose, at every sample time, a solution in line with the problem objectives. Next, a tuning strategy, which avoid the Pareto front calculation in the on-line implementation by using a model that allows to variate the weighting factors of each objective function, in terms of consumer water demands. El present projecte de fi de carrera versa sobre l'aplicació del control òptim-predictiu en xarxes d'aigua potable. Concretament es descriu l'aplicació de la metodologia MPC, basada en un model dinàmic de la xarxa, que prediu el comportament del sistema, i que permet al controlador trobar una estratègia de cotrol òptima, que permeti satisfer de la millor manera possible les necessitats presents i futures de l'operació de la xarxa. Per aquest motiu es discuteix una estratègia de modelat que permeti representar adequadament tots els elements d'una xarxa d'aigua potable, així com la representació dels diferents requeriments d'operació. Aquests requeriments, relacionats amb la gestió del recurs i de la xarxa, han de ser optimitzats per garantir que el servei s'ajusta el màxim possible a les necessitats dels usuaris. Concretament es busca la minimització dels costos econòmics, destinats a l'operació diària de la xarxa, la maximització de la seguretat en la xarxa, que permeti evitar una ruptura del subministre, i per últim la minimització de fluctuacions en el cabal a través de la xarxa, que permeti evitar una disfunció en alguns dels elements. Tot això garantint sempre la satisfacció de la demanda d'aigua per part dels usuaris. Es discuteix també la normalització d'aquests tres requeriments, que permet fitar i igualar la seva evolució, de manera que puguin ser considerats i optimitzats conjuntament. Cal doncs tenir en compte el caràcter lineal o quadràtic dels diferents factors, així com la seva sintonització o importància relativa dins de la funció global a optimitzar. La bondat d'aquest mètode es posa a prova en la xarxa d'aigua potable de l'àrea matropolitana de Barcelona, utilitzant un model que representa amb completesa i precisió la xarxa a nivell de transport. El control en temps real de xarxes de clavegueram (RTC) desenvolupa un paper fonamental dins de la gestió dels recursos hídrics relacionats amb el cicle urbà de l'aigua i, en general, amb el seu cicle natural. Un adequat disseny de control per a xarxes de clavegueram evita impactes mediambientals negatius originats per inundacions i/o alta pol·lució producte de condicions meteorològiques xtremes. No obstant, s'ha de tenir en compte que aquestes xarxes, a més de la seva grandària i quantitat de variables i instrumentació, són sistemes rics en dinàmiques complexes i altament no lineals. Aquest fet, unit a les condicions atmosfèriques extremes, fan necessari utilitzar una estratègia de control capaç¸ de suportar totes aquestes condicions. En aquest sentit, dins del camp del (RTC) de xarxes de clavegueram es destaquen les estratègies de control predictiu basat en model (MPC), les quals són alternatives adequades per al control de configuracions multivariable i de gran escala, aplicades com estratègies de control global del sistema. A m´es, permeten optimitzar la resposta del sistema tenint en compte diversos índexs de rendiment (control multiobjectiu). Aquesta tesi s'enfoca en el disseny de controladors MPC per a xarxes de clavegueram considerant diverses metodologies de modelat. Addicionalment, analitza les situacions en les quals es presenten fallades als actuadors de la xarxa, proposant estratègies per a mantenir la resposta del sistema amb la menor degradació possible dels objectius de control, malgrat la presència de la fallada. En la primera part s'introdueixen els conceptes principals dels temes a tractar en la tesi: xarxes de clavegueram, MPC i tolerància a fallades. Seguidament, es presenta la tècnica de modelat utilitzada per a definir el model d'una xarxa de clavegueram. Finalment, es presenta i descriu el cas d'aplicació en la tesi: la xarxa de clavegueram de Barcelona (Espanya). La segona part es centra en dissenyar controladors MPC per al cas d'e, El control en tiempo real de redes de alcantarillado (RTC) desempeña un papel fundamental dentro de la gestión de los recursos hídricos relacionados con el ciclo urbano del agua y, en general, con su ciclo natural. Un adecuado diseño de control para de redes de alcantarillado evita impactos medioambientales negativos originados por inundaciones y/o alta polución producto de condiciones meteorológicas extremas. Sin embargo, se debe tener en cuenta que estas redes, además de su gran tamaño y cantidad de variables e instrumentación, son sistemas ricos en dinámicas complejas y altamente no lineales. Este hecho, unido a unas condiciones atmosféricas extremas, hace necesario utilizar una estrategia de control capaz de soportar todas estas condiciones. En este sentido, dentro del campo del RTC de redes de alcantarillado se destacan las estrategias de control predictivo basadas en modelo (MPC), las cuales son alternativas adecuadas para el control de configuraciones multivariable y de gran escala, aplicadas como estrategias de control global del sistema. Además, permiten optimizar el desempeño del sistema teniendo en cuenta diversos índices de rendimiento (control multiobjetivo). Esta tesis se enfoca en el diseño de controladores MPC para redes de alcantarillado considerando diversas metodologías de modelado. Adicionalmente, analiza las situaciones en las cuales se presentan fallos en los actuadores de la red, proponiendo estrategias para mantener el desempeño del sistema y evitando la degradación de los objetivos de control a pesar de la presencia del fallo. En la primera parte se introducen los conceptos principales de los temas a tratar en la tesis: redes de alcantarillado, MPC y tolerancia a fallos. La segunda parte se centra en, Real time control (RTC) of sewer networks plays a fundamental role in the management of hydrological systems, both in the urban water cycle, as well as in the natural water cycle. An adequate design of control systems for sewer networks can prevent the negative impact on the environment that Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) as well as preventing flooding within city limits when extreme weather conditions occur. However, sewer networks are large scale systems with many variables, complex dynamics and strong nonlinear behaviour. Any control strategy applied should be capable of handling these challenging requirements. Within the field of RTC of sewer networks for global network control, the Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy stands out due to its ability to handle large scale, nonlinear and multivariable systems. Furthermore, this strategy allows performance optimization, taking into account several control objectives simultaneously. This thesis is devoted to the design of MPC controllers for sewer networks, as well as the complementary modelling methodologies. Furthermore, scenarios where actuator faults occur are specially considered and strategies to maintain performance or at least minimizing its degradation in presence of faults are proposed. In the first part of this thesis, the basic concepts are introduced: sewer networks, MPC and fault tolerant control. In addition, the modelling methodologies used to describe such systems are presented. Finally the case study of this thesis is described: the sewer network of the city of Barcelona (Spain). The second part of this thesis is centered on the design of MPC controllers for the proposed case study. Two types of models are considered: (i) a linear model whose corresponding MPC strategy is known for its advantages such as convexity of the optimization problem and existing pro of sofstability, and (ii) a hybrid model which allows the inclusion of state dependent hybrid dynamics such as weirs.
