The essay is inspired by the consideration of the essentially ancipient nature of the screen as an image support: on the one hand the screen is something that hides, protects and separates; on the other hand, especially in recent modernity, it becomes the device par excellence of the opening of vision, and therefore the essential frame of the image. Through some famous twentieth-century examples, taken from W. Woolrich (It Had to be Murder), A. Robbe-Grillet (Le voyeur, La Jalousie), Gombrowicz (Pornografia, Cosmo), A. Moravia (L’uomo che guarda), the essay shows the function and evolution of the literary representation of what V. Stoichita called, referring to figurative art and cinema, “Sherlock effect”.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the presence of typically comic narrative elements, especially concerning the characters’ sexual and social life in Houellebecq’s novels. The primary effect of this elements is to make the reader laugh, but also to cause him to distance themselves from the disturbing representations. At a later time, the same elements will trigger identification mechanisms in the reader thorough their pathetic connotations. The method is a close reading of some pages of Houellebecq’s novels Whatever (1998) and Atomised (1998). The key assumption is that the literary text is always ambivalent, multiform and plural, and that these components can brought to light thorough textual analysis.

Since the 19th century, the literary representations of school have been founded on two different perspective: school has been portrayed either as a tyrannical, oppressive institution, or as a means of personal and social redemption and growth. The same alternative applies also to the representation of the teacher, and of her/his relationship with the students: either a merciless war, or a splendid opportunity of mutual enrichment. This dialectic is outlined through a series of exemplary literary works, from Edmondo De Amicis’s Romanzo di un maestro to Sandro Onofri’s Registro di classe.

This short text – a reply to Raffaele Pinto's paper - proposes to reflection on the universality of the concept of desire in relation to literature, starting with the Aristotelian theme of 'orexis' – understood as a link between body and soul – to arrive to the Freudian concepts of Eros and Thanatos. This doubleness, considered constituting human desire, only in literary works can find a possible reconciliation.

A desire that has been hidden for such a long time to the realms of the inexspressible will find alternative ways to begin to speak, even if this means to subject its content to a metamorphosis that could make it unrecognizable. As the dream activity translates thoughts in images, the unspeakable can be representable. This happens even in the Tavola Ritonda, one of the Italian rewritings (beginning of the 14th century) of the Prose Tristan, a 13th Arthurian French compilation. Tristan, became the unhappy husband of Iseult of the White Hands, tries to fill the absence of Iseult the Blond by realizing a statue of his lover. This episode’s model, absent from the Prose Tristan, can be found in the famous scene of the “Salle aux images” coming from Thomas, that the Tavola Ritonda rewrites in a “bourgeois” way by transforming the statue in a proper fetish symbol. This paper, that will turn to the notions of Unheimliche and Witz, will point out how the Tuscan writer canalizes the return of the repressed through ékphrasis, and how he tries to mitigate the uncanny of the inanimate double of Iseult by a comic conclusion.

This study is aimed at investigating the dynamics of desire, also linked to the theme of the gaze, as it can be found in the film Nostalghia (1983) by Andrej Tarkovskij. First of all, the study will analyze the desire of Gorčakov, the main character, to see his remote Russia and its slow focus, thanks to the encounter with the 'crazy' marginalized Domenico, on the will to bring a candlelight from one side to the other of an ancient thermal pool. Through an approach mainly related to thematic criticism (halfway between cinema and literature) we will try to demonstrate the interrelationships, from the point of view of seduction and analysis of fetish objects, between the desire of the protagonist and that of Domenico. Using also some means of social critique offered by Michel Foucault, we shall obtain results never previously analyzed by critical studies on Tarkovskij and Nostalghia.

Casanova, as he himself admits in his undisciplined memoirs, fully committed his life to a disorganized and non-systematic cultivation of pleasure. In such lack of stability, which affects the identity as well as the actions of the narrator, the energy of desire is revealed in its most vital and powerful forms: a desire for recognition, glory and literary immortality, which is a desire for the Other; a desire for transcendence, but also for new secular horizons, which is a desire for the Elsewhere; a desire for the lover’s words, which is the amorous desire that recomposes the bodies fragmented and made into pieces by sexual desire. Nevertheless a deliberate libertine project – the wide-ranging exploration of natural appetites – seems to traverse the whole Histoire de ma vie, and underlie this narrative codification of sexual desire. As Leonardo Sciascia pointed out, Casanova’s quest for absolute liberty culminates in the celebration of the most extreme action of vitalism – incest. While the incestuous intrigue of the memoirs are famous, less known is the representation of incest Casanova gives in the Jcosameron. In this utopian novel, through the story of a young brother and his sister, initiated to the elevated dimension of consanguineous love by the inhabitants of the centre of the earth, the writer thus finds a possibility to speak publicly about something prohibited, unutterable.

Aim of this essay is to show how tonal and harmonic solutions give expression to different desires in some crucial operas like Strauss's Elektra (1905), Schoenberg's Erwartung (1909), Schreker's Die Gezeichneten (1916) and Hindemith's Cardillac (1926).

This work offers a Freudian lecture of Yehoshua’s novel, based on the contrast between ethical project and dynamics of desire. The protagonist is a human resources manager from Jerusalem going to Russia with the corpse of an employee dead in an attack; he has a metamorphosis that seems on one hand functional to the construction of a moral apologue: as in Lévinas’ late thinking, so in Yehoshua the responsibility for the Other is entrenched in our subjective being. The Manager arbitrary inverts his route and brings back to Jerusalem the victim’s coffin, mother and child because this allegoric City belongs to everyone and its sharing is the only achievable reparation. What stays in the background in the ‘ethical’ interpretation of the text is the role of desire. The beginning of the inquiry on Julia’s corpse causes in the text the emerging of symmetrization (as Matte Blanco would say). Julia’s body, desirable althought (or because) closed in a coffin, causes the breaking in a dimension that, potentially, don’t know the distinction between things but, conversely, assimilate and confuse them in a unique reality.

Sublimation is an idea often used to give a psychoanalytic interpretation of artistic creativity. Focusing on the lyric speaker within the poem and considering the text as a mise-en-scène of poetic creation, the paper intends to investigate why sublimation could not be the right key to understanding the phenomenon. The subject’s dynamics, in modern poetry, show themselves as a continuous failure in the repeated attempt to possess the object. The speaker’s affective and cognitive desire is produced and constantly renewed by the impossibility of possessing the object (above all in its representation). But it is only in such a gap that the subject can exists. In order to feel desire, there should be an illusion of possession and representation. Subject and object create each other in lyric poem, and the former comes to coincide with the desire for the latter, it does not exist outside that desire. Since lyric poetry shows itself as the unfolding of a subject that voices itself and is always involved in an object relation, it can be a privileged field of investigation for this kind of phenomena. Two poets will be taken into consideration: Thibaut de Champagne, a late trouvère who summons up the Provençal tradition, and Charles Baudelaire, one of the modern poets that have most deeply investigated the reality lack of sense.

The aim of this study is to analyze the relation between man and animal as an objectual relation and a desire of the former for the latter, highlighting the exceptional and transgressive dynamics that come into play when the object of desire is an animal. The thesis is that, in contemporary literature, the theme of desire towards the animal other, often tightly connected to the topos of metamorphosis, plays a key role in the dissolution of the unitary subject and leads to the multiplicity of being or, to cite Delueze and Guattari's A Thousand Plateaus, the multiplicity of becoming. The analysis is focused on two norwegian novels from the twentieth century: Fuglane (The Birds) by Tarjei Vesaas (1957) and Gepardene (The Cheetahs) by Finn Carling. After a short introduction to the novels, we will move on to explain how desire is the basis of the objectual relation between man and animal, in order to then show how it also represents a dynamic principle and a narrative model in the analyzed literary texts.

If an unbreakable law exists for the Subject, it is the limits that Reality sets for his expansion and for his creativity, unless he alienates himself from reality to enter the realm of folly. Literary creation realizes itself in the space between the direct experience of the world, the event in its pure happening, and the unity of sense as an object of desire. The subject with his understanding abilities, therefore, must react to the stimulus given by the event willingly or unwillingly experienced and he must venture out to the eventful journey of interpretation led by the intentionality of his desire. As Petrarch’s canzone 360 demonstrates, the trial-pattern can be used as a literary form and a cognitive model in order to show the inner reasoning and moral debate, to define the rules of the specific literary genre, to explicate a truth that finally depends on the literary genre. On this journey the desire of sense can suffer limits and frustrations imposed by the law of Reality: obstacles, obligations, censorship and self-censorship (as introjected censorship principles). This law both makes hard and leads the journey, obstructs it but also makes it shareable: facing a Reality similar for all the human beings (even if differently perceived), shareable reactions and interpretations are developed. My article intends to explore these issues in some revealing and foundational texts of modern lyric poetry (mostly from Petrarch’s Canzoniere), having in mind the idea that poetry, as a personal voice of a subject, utters this journey of research more than it reveals some acquired general truths. In European lyric tradition, woman and nature can be considered as functional objects that activate and set a limit to the subject; they embody the law to obey, to which to conform or to rebel. In order to exercise himself in the text-space, to construct himself as a subject, the lyric-I has to create the limits within which to act and the laws of this space.
