Hydrolysable tannins are polyphenolic molecules contained in plant foodstuffs, potentially toxic for animals. Since tannins have been found in some bee products such as bee pollen, propolis, and honey, this work aimed to test the effects of tannins dietary assumption on bees' health. Results showed that supplementation of honey bees diets with 0.05% (w/w), as naturally amount reported in the honey, and 0.5% (w/w) of tannins significantly reduced bees' survival in a dose-dependent manner. In honey bees fed with a 0.5% tannins-enrichment diet a significantly decreased phenoloxidase activity than those fed with a 0.05% tannins-enrichment diet and with only syrup was recorded. Conversely, glucose oxidase activity significantly increased in honey bees fed with 0.5% tannins-enrichment diet than those with a 0.05% tannins-enrichment diet and only syrup. No differences were detected in glutathione S-transferase activity between honey bees fed with tannins-enrichment diets and syrup. Therefore, a naturally amount of hydrolysable tannins in foods can weakly affect bee wellness, whereas high levels of tannins can have a negative impact on honey bees' immunity and metabolism leading to a reduction of lifespan. Tannin rich fraction (TRF) isolated from hydroalcoholic extract of Terminalia chebula characterized by Liquid Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) tested positive for the presence of gallic acid, methyl gallate, corilagin, chebulagic acid, and chebulinic acid. The anti-inflammatory activity of TRF was studied in in vitro models in which TRF showed dose-dependent increase in in vitro anti-inflammatory activities. At 250 µgmL-1, TRF exhibited 84.48, 84.33, 81.98, and 82.3% inhibition of protein denaturation, membrane lysis, proteinase, and hyaluronidase enzyme activities, respectively. The binding efficacy of individual hydrolysable tannins with various therapeutic targets was studied by in silico docking analysis which showed that corilagin possessed higher negative docking score, indicating good interaction for few therapeutic target proteins related to anti-inflammatory action. Castanea sativa Mill(ENC®), containing tannins against 33Chlamydiastrains, was compared to SMAP-29 with inhibitory effect againstC. trachomatisandC. pneumoniae. The ENC® activity againstChlamydiaspp. was evaluated determining the lowest concentration to achieve more than half reduction of intact chlamydial inclusions versus controls. ENC® reduced allChlamydiastrains tested at 1 µg/mL, while SMAP-29 induced reductions ofC. trachomatisandC. pneumoniaeinfectivity at 10 µg/mL. Bergenia crassifolia L., Saxifragaceae, is an evergreen perennial plant known in traditional medicine of Russia, Mongolia and China. Polyphenols are responsible for the number of pharmacological effects of Bergenia. UPLC-DAD-QqQ-MS and LC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-MS were used for the rapid profiling of phenolic compounds, mainly hydrolysable tannins. Green leaves consisted of 55% ellagitannins, 29% gallic acid derivatives and 11% flavonoids, with the remaining gallic acid, arbutin, bergenin and caffeoyl quinic acid. In fermented leaves, 31% of gallic acid was found, followed with 28% ellagitannins, 18% gallic acid derivatives and 18% flavonoids, with the remaining caffeoyl quinic acid, bergenin and arbutin. Tellimagrandin I, pedunculagin, caffeoyl quinic acid, monogalloyl quinic acid, 1-O-galloylglucose and 1,2,6-tri-O-galloylglucose were identified for the very first time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Five mung bean cultivars varying in seed coat color were analyzed for polyphenol content. The effect of soaking and germination on the polyphenol content and polyphenol oxidase activity was investigated. The level of total polyphenols was found to be in the range of 310–340 mg/100 g in whole seeds. Soaking reduced the total polyphenols, whereas germination for 48 h increased total polyphenol content by 41–76%. The hydrolysable tannins, condensed tannins, and hydrolysable tannins/condensed tannins index increased with an increase in period of germination. The total and percent condensed tannins content slightly decreased while hydrolysable tannins increased during germination. Maximum polyphenol oxidase activity of 102–108 units was observed in 24 h germinated seeds. There was no significant correlation found between the polyphenolic content and polyphenol oxidase activity in germinating mung bean seeds. These findings demonstrated that the mung beans are fair sources of polyphenols, thus having great potential as a source of natural antioxidants. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Chestnut hydrolysable tannins are phenolic materials that have been considered too unreactive to compete in the phenolic resin adhesives market for exterior boards for the building industry. However, an article in 1973 describing 3 years industrial application of chestnut hydrolysable tannins during the first oil crisis indicated that this was not the case. We have extended this old work by using superior phenolic resins formulations and producing phenol–formaldehyde–chestnut tannin adhesives where a substitution of up to 80% of the phenol is possible with remarkably good results. Pathogenic bacteria attached to the hide or shed in the feces of cattle at slaughter can contaminate carcasses intended to be processed for human consumption. Therefore, new pre-harvest interventions are needed to prevent the carriage and excretion of foodborne pathogens in cattle presented to the processing plant. The objectives of this study were to examine the antimicrobial effects of hydrolysable tannin-rich chestnut and condensed tannin-rich mimosa extracts on bacterial indicators of foodborne pathogens when applied as a hide-intervention and as a feed additive to feedlot cattle. Water (control) or solutions (3 % wt/vol) of chestnut- and mimosa-extract treatments were sprayed (25 mL) at the left costal side of each animal to a 1000 cm2 area, divided in four equal quadrants. Hide-swabs samples obtained at pre-, 2-min, 8-h, and 24-h post-spray application were cultured to enumerate Escherichia coli/total coliforms and total aerobic plate counts. In a second experiment, diets supplemented without (controls) or with (1.5 % of diet dry matter) chestnut- or mimosa-extracts were fed during a 42-day experimental feeding period. Weekly fecal samples starting on day 0, and rumen fluid obtained on days 0, 7, 21 or 42 were cultured to enumerate E.coli/total coliforms and Campylobacter. Tannin spray application showed no effect of treatment or post-application-time (P> 0.05) on measured bacterial populations, averaging 1.7/1.8, 1.5/1.6 and 1.5/1.7 (log10 CFU/cm2) for E. coli/total coliforms, and 4.0, 3.4 and 4.2 (log10CFU/cm2) in total aerobes for control, chestnut and mimosa treatments, respectively. Mean (± SEM) ruminal E. coli and total coliform concentrations (log10 CFU/mL) were reduced (P< 0.01) in steers fed chestnut-tannins (3.6 and 3.8 ± 0.1) in comparison with the controls (4.1 and 4.2 ± 0.1). Fecal E. coli concentrations were affected by treatment (P< 0.01), showing the highest values (log10 CFU/g) in fecal contents from mimosa-fed steers compared to controls (5.9 versus 5.6 ± 0.1 SEM, respectively). Total coliforms (log CFU/g) showed the highest values (P< 0.01) in feces from chestnut- and mimosa-fed steers (6.0 and 6.1 ± 0.1 respectively) in comparison with controls (5.7 ± 0.1). Fecal Campylobacter concentrations (log10CFU/g) were affected by treatment (P< 0.05), day (P< 0.001) and their interaction (P< 0.01) with the controls having lower concentrations than chestnut- and mimosa-fed steers (0.4, 1.0, and 0.8 ± 0.3, respectively). It was concluded that under our research conditions, tannins were not effective in decreasing measured bacterial populations on beef cattle hides. Additionally, chestnut tannin reduced E. coli and total coliforms within the rumen but the antimicrobial effect was not maintained in the lower gastrointestinal tract. Further research is necessary to elucidate the possible antimicrobial effects of tannins at site-specific locations of the gastrointestinal tract in beef cattle fed high-grain and high-forage diets. Phyllanthus amarus Linn is a widely distributed tropical medicinal plant highly valued for its therapeutic properties. The antioxidant activity of some of its principal constituents, namely amariin, 1-galloyl-2,3-dehydrohexahydroxydiphenyl (DHHDP)-glucose, repandusinic acid, geraniin, corilagin, phyllanthusiin D, rutin and quercetin 3-O-glucoside were examined for their ability to scavenge free radicals in a range of systems including 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azobis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS)/ferrylmyoglobin, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and pulse radiolysis. In addition, their ability to protect rat liver mitochondria against oxidative damage was determined by measuring the ROO• radical induced damage to proteins and lipids and •OH radical induced damage to plasmid DNA. The compounds showed significant antioxidant activities with differing efficacy depending on the assays employed. Amariin, repandusinic acid and phyllanthusiin D showed higher antioxidant activity among the ellagitannins and were comparable to the flavonoids, rutin and quercetin 3-O-glucoside. Oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of numerous diseases. Nevertheless, no optimal natural antioxidant has been found for therapeutics, therefore polyphenol antioxidants have been looked for in myrtle leaves, a plant that in folk medicine has been used as anti-inflammatory drug. Antioxidant-rich fractions were prepared from myrtle ( Myrtus communis L.) leaves liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) with different solvents. All myrtle extracts were very rich in polyphenols. In particular, hydroalcoholic extracts contain galloyl-glucosides, ellagitannins, galloyl-quinic acids and flavonol glycosides; ethylacetate extract and aqueous residues after LLE are enriched in flavonol glycosides and hydrolysable tannins (galloyl-glucosides, ellagitannins, galloyl-quinic acids), respectively. Qualitative and quantitative analysis for the single unidentified compound was also performed. Human LDL exposed to copper ions was used to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the myrtle extracts. Addition of these extracts did not affect the basal oxidation of LDL but dose-dependently decreased the oxidation induced by copper ions. Moreover, the myrtle extracts reduce the formation of conjugated dienes. The antioxidant effect of three myrtle extracts decreased in the following order: hydroalcoholic extracts, ethylacetate and aqueous residues after LLE. The extracts had the following IC 50 : 0.36, 2.27 and 2.88 μM, when the sum of total phenolic compounds was considered after the correction of molecular weight based on pure compounds. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference among hydroalcoholic extracts vs. the ethylacetate and aqueous residues after LLE. These results suggest that the myrtle extracts have a potent antioxidant activity mainly due to the presence of galloyl derivatives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
