Sexual Strategies Theory suggests people fall on a continuum between having short-term mating orientation (STMO) and long-term mating orientation. One way STMO individuals signal mating goals is via risky drinking. The current study therefore aims to investigate drinks per week (DPW) as a mediator between STMO and risky sexual behavior (RSB), with gender as a moderator between STMO and DPW. Undergraduate students (N = 300) from a Midwestern university during Fall 2019. Participants completed questionnaires assessing STMO, DPW, and RSB frequency. A moderated-mediation model indicated DPW significantly mediated the relationship between STMO and RSB. Positive associations were found among all three variables. Gender was not a moderator between STMO and DPW. Mating orientation was a correlate of alcohol use and RSB for women and men, contributing to the literature identifying STMO as an indicator of those in need of substance use and RSB intervention. The present study developed a measure assessing the emotional responses, "Displacement Imposition," of cigarette and e-cigarette users on a college campus with a smoking/vaping ban. It also examined the relationship between Displacement Imposition and readiness to quit smoking/vaping, and how this relationship differed between cigarette and e-cigarette users. Participants (N = 297) were from a large, Midwestern university. Participants completed online questionnaires assessing demographics, cigarette and e-cigarette use, Displacement Imposition, and readiness to quit. All six Displacement Imposition items loaded onto a single factor. A significant interaction emerged between Displacement Imposition and product use in predicting readiness to quit. At high levels of Displacement Imposition, cigarette users were less ready to quit than e-cigarette users. Findings suggest restrictions imposed on cigarette and e-cigarette users were associated with reduced readiness to quit. Findings inform tobacco control policies as tobacco denormalization may increase the burden placed on tobacco users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The primary aim of the current study is to determine the incremental efficacy of adding a novel values component to a personalized feedback intervention for young adult drinking. Undergraduate students (N = 254) were randomized to receive either traditional, traditional with values assessment, or values enhanced feedback. Results showed significant decreases in drinks per week (p <.01) and alcohol-related consequences (p <.05) across all feedback conditions. Further research is needed to determine whether using values-based feedback could enhance intervention effects and how best to incorporate feedback in a way that is feasible and acceptable to recipients. This study examines an initial attempt of two literacy and educational technology teacher educators to establish an inter-university partnership among 58 teacher candidates learning to integrate educational technology to support literacy instruction by creating an online professional learning community. This study uses self-study as a form of inquiry to examine teacher candidates' perceptions about the collaborative model and their use of technology integration. Findings focus on teacher educator experiences and teacher candidates' integrating technology into instructional planning. Teacher educator themes centre on the importance of synchronising planning and devising strategies to garner participation between members of an inter-university partnership. Teacher candidate themes illustrate how empathy for others' learning can increase technological self-efficacy and strategies when using an online space to share technology integration experiences. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can cause numerous cognitive deficits. These deficits are associated with disability and reduction in quality of life. Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) provides excitatory or inhibitory stimuli to the cerebral cortex. This review aimed to examine the effectiveness of NIBS (i.e., rTMS and tDCS) on cognitive functions in patients with TBI. PubMed, SCOPUS, PEDro, CINAHL, MEDLINE, REHABDATA, and Web of Science were searched from inception to May 2021. The risk of bias in the randomized controlled trials was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration's instrument. The Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale was applied to evaluate the risk of bias in the non-randomized controlled trials. Ten studies met our inclusion criteria. Six studies used repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), and four used transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) as cognitive rehabilitation interventions. The results showed heterogenous evidence for the effects of rTMS and tDCS on cognitive function outcomes in individuals with TBI. The evidence for the effects of NIBS on cognition following TBI was limited. TDCS and rTMS are safe and well-tolerated interventions post-TBI. The optimal stimulation sites and stimulation parameters remain unknown. Combining NIBS with traditional rehabilitation interventions may contribute to greater enhancements in cognitive functions post-TBI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the presence of three conceptual metaphors for fractions – The measuring stick metaphor, Arithmetic is motion along a path, and Arithmetic is object construction – in four common and popular Swedish mathematics textbook series for years 1–3. I analyse the introduction of fractions and the kinds of tasks students are given in these books. The results show an abundance of labelling exercises related to Arithmetic is object construction, with representations of geometric shapes, in three of the book series. One book series reversely introduces fractions with The measuring stick metaphor and Arithmetic is motion along a path, with a focus on number line representations. At present, the double balloon represented by the COOK Cervix Ripening Balloon and the single balloon represented by the Foley catheter are the commonly used intrauterine balloons. The application of intrauterine balloons in cervical ripening has evolved over 100 years. Although intrauterine balloons have been widely used in cervical ripening, the effect of labor induction in clinical practice does not satisfy all clinicians, especially patients with poor cervical maturity. The research in this review is about intrauterine balloons and cervical ripening. This article reviews the historical evolution and different application methods of intrauterine balloons in cervical ripening, such as application range, placement method and placement duration of intrauterine balloons, volume and temperature of the solution fillings, and whether to apply traction to the catheter. A prospective study was designed to (a) investigate the rate of daily weight gain among kittens less than 9 weeks old presented to an animal shelter, (b) identify factors (e.g., sex, clinical signs of disease, diet, and medical treatment) that affect daily weight gain, and (c) investigate the mortality of study kittens. The study of 203 kittens was conducted at a managed admission, no-kill animal shelter in upstate New York, USA, from April 2014 through October 2014. Body weight was measured daily from day of intake to adoption or 12 weeks of age. Fecal score, clinical signs of disease, food type, and medical treatments were recorded daily. Lethargy and being female were significantly associated with lower daily weight gain. Despite the challenges of shelter and foster care, the average daily weight gain for study kitten was higher than that reported in other settings such as catteries and laboratories. Five study kittens (2.5%) died or were euthanized. Daily monitoring systems provide opportunities for interventions, increased live outcomes, and improved welfare for kittens in shelter and foster care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research explored drug checking as a market intervention with a potential role in supporting a safer supply within the overdose crisis. We sought the perspectives of potential service users, including those who sell substances. Twenty-six semi-structured interviews were conducted in Victoria, British Columbia (BC), Canada with research guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). We identified five overarching themes for implementation: 'Understanding the role of conflicting policies and market pressures,' 'Increasing relative advantage of drug checking through quality results and written reports,' 'Establishing safe, discrete locations without the risk of arrest or public knowledge,' 'Partnering peers with drug knowledge and skilled technicians,' and 'Engaging peers and word of mouth to ensure trust and reputation.' We heard that criminalization and being responsive to market pressures are the most critical factors in implementing drug checking as a market intervention. To operate within this context, drug checking services need to ensure the provision of high-quality services and products, provided by peers and scientists, with established trust and safety. Promotion of drug checking to facilitate quality products and novel strategies were identified, but pose challenges. Alagille syndrome (ALGS) is an autosomal dominant, multisystem genetic disorder with wide phenotypic variability caused by mutations in the Notch signaling pathway, specifically from mutations in either the Jagged1 (JAG1) or NOTCH2 gene. The range of clinical features in ALGS can involve various organ systems including the liver, heart, eyes, skeleton, kidney, and vasculature. Despite the genetic mutations being well-defined, there is variable expressivity and individuals with the same mutation may have different clinical phenotypes. While no clear genotype-phenotype correlation has been identified in ALGS, this review will summarize what is currently known about the genotype-phenotype relationship and how this relationship influences the treatment of the multisystemic disorder. This review includes discussion of numerous studies which have focused on describing the genotype-phenotype relationship of different organ systems in ALGS as well as relevant basic science and population studies of ALGS. A thorough literature search was completed via the PubMed and National Library of Medicine GeneReviews databases including dates from 1969, when ALGS was first identified, to February 2023. The genetics of ALGS are well defined; however, ongoing investigation to identify genotype-phenotype relationships as well as genetic modifiers as potential therapeutic targets is needed. Evolving therapeutic landscape through combinatorial chemistry and high throughput screening have resulted in an increased number of poorly soluble drugs. Drug delivery strategies quickly adapted to convert these drugs into successful therapies. Amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) technology is widely employed as a drug delivery strategy by pharmaceutical industries to overcome the challenges associated with these poorly soluble drugs. The development of ASD formulation requires an understanding of polymers and manufacturing techniques. A review of US FDA-approved ASD-based products revealed that only a limited number of polymers and manufacturing technologies are employed by pharmaceutical industries. This review provides a comprehensive guide for the selection and overview of polymers and manufacturing technologies adopted by pharmaceutical industries for ASD formulation. The various employed polymers with their underlying mechanisms for solution-state and solid-state stability are discussed. ASD manufacturing techniques, primarily implemented by pharmaceutical industries for commercialization, are presented in Quality by Design (QbD) format. An overview of novel excipients and progress in manufacturing technologies are also discussed. This review provides insights to the researchers on the industrially accepted polymers and manufacturing technology for ASD formulation that has translated these challenging drugs into successful therapies. This is a phenomenological study pivoted in the spiral time theory on the effects of the private burial of 25 attendees on the mortuary rites culture of Ghana during the COVID-19 restriction on the mass gathering. Sixty-one study participants were purposively sampled for the study. Their views were gathered through face-to-face, telephone, and video interviews. The findings revealed that 82% of the study participants objected to the private burial arrangement for cultural reasons such as disrespecting the dead, resulting in social mockery of the bereaved family and its failure in preparing the dead toward the journey to his afterlife amongst others. The remaining 18% who supported the private burial cited health reasons as a result of the mortuary congestion and the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the huge financial costs associated with the extravagant mortuary rites observation. The study concludes that the mortuary rites culture in Ghana exerts a great influence on the decisions of the Ghanaian people toward the private burial arrangement within the period of COVID-19. Culture-driven alternatives to the extravagant mortuary rites that would best compensate for the established cultural protocols must be pursued by the Ghana government after broad consultations with all stakeholders. The COVID-19 pandemic represented a unique information seeking and sharing context for billions of Internet users across the globe. Although previous research has established that people often seek health information on the Internet, including through social media platforms, there was a political element to pandemic responses that is not typical of health issues such as seasonal influenza or heart conditions. This unique context, in conjunction with the public posting of the novel coronavirus DNA by Chinese scientists in January 2020, begs for analysis of how people used social media in the early phase of the pandemic to make sense of the role of genetics in COVID-19. This study represents such an analysis as a qualitative content analysis of Facebook posts concerning genetics and COVID-19. Data were collected from March through August of 2020 to identify how genetics issues were being shared on Facebook and the types of accounts that were sharing that information. Through analysis, four themes emerged representing Facebook posts about genetics and COVID-19: disease risk, testing, vaccines, and virus characteristics. These posts appeared on eight types of accounts, with five of those representing 88% of the data: education, health, lifestyle, news, and political. General practitioners (GPs) are well positioned to support patients during their grieving process. This study investigated patients' experiences and expectations of their GP's role during bereavement care after losing a loved one. Semi-structured interviews (N=14) were conducted to gain a deeper insight with the aim to improve the quality of primary bereavement care. Results showed a role for GPs in the assessment of and response to patients' needs. Patients had limited expectations of their GP but did appreciate it when their GP showed concern about their loss. The article focuses on Teacher Time Outs (TTOs) in rehearsals and co-enactments as part of a practice-based approach to professional development, aiming to support teachers' learning of ambitious mathematics teaching. Ambitious teaching requires teachers to be responsive to students' ideas in-the-moment of instruction. This is complex and places enormous demands on the teacher. We examine how TTOs support teachers' learning of ambitious teaching and their development of pedagogical judgment. The findings reveal that the TTOs provided opportunities for teachers' collective learning of key practices of ambitious teaching, and that the TTOs supported the teachers' collective pedagogical reasoning and decision-making in-the-moment of teaching and with connecting pedagogical reasoning to pedagogical actions and responsibilities. Central to criticisms of teacher professional development is an insufficient focus on its impact including minimal evidence of changes to practice coupled with inadequate emphasis on student outcomes. This year-long study of one case study school investigates the impact of a seven-month professional development initiative designed to support teachers in implementing a reform approach to mathematics teaching. Data sources include teacher interviews, lesson observations, student focus group interviews, and document reviews. Findings suggest initially impoverished mathematics experiences that later begin to show signs of enrichment. Students' insights into changing practice indicate that students want to be challenged more in mathematics and experience this challenge in inclusive learning environments where all students are valued and supported. A key finding is the effectiveness of student insights in increasing teachers' engagement with the professional development initiative and in motivating teachers' engagement in, and commitment to, the reform process. These findings highlight the complexity of the teacher change process, in particular, how cognitive dissonance plays a key role in changing practice. Central to creating this cognitive dissonance were students' insightful perspectives about learning mathematics. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the knowledge and self-efficacy of kindergarten school teachers impact students' learning outcomes namely Arabic language reading skills. The study was a cross-sectional survey and collected data from 120 kindergarten teachers. The study showed that there is a significant positive relationship between knowledge and self-efficacy, both contributing to better learners' experience during early learning periods. The null hypothesis of the study was that there was a difference in the teacher's gender in their ability to create enthusiasm in class. The teacher's gender difference had an insignificant effect. This study examined the associations of change in unmet needs for assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) with the self-rated health and life satisfaction of community-dwelling Chinese older adults. Using national longitudinal data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Study, we examined the associations of change in unmet ADL needs with self-rated health and life satisfaction from baseline (T1) to a 3-year follow-up (T2) among 1,914 ADL-limited older adults. Change in unmet ADL needs was categorized into 'Persistently Unmet,' 'Unmet at T1 Only,' 'Unmet at T2 Only,' and 'Never Unmet.' Self-rated health and life satisfaction were rated by 5-point Likert scales. Linear mixed models were performed to examine the associations, controlling for sociodemographics, health conditions, and social support. Older adults whose ADL needs were 'Persistently Unmet,' 'Unmet at T2 Only,' or 'Never Unmet,' showed a significant decline in self-rated health, but those whose ADL needs were 'Unmet at T1 Only' exhibited a significant rise at follow-up. While life satisfaction was stable among older adults with 'Persistently Unmet' or 'Never Unmet' ADL needs, it significantly decreased among those with 'Unmet at T2 Only' ADL needs and increased among those with 'Unmet at T1 Only' ADL needs. Unmet needs may play an even more significant role in negatively impacting life satisfaction than the ADL limitation itself. Unmet ADL needs' effects on self-rated health and life satisfaction appeared to be short-term rather than long-term. Thus, it is never too late to adequately meet older adults' ADL needs. It is increasingly being recognized that new declarative, consciously accessible information can be learned in anterograde amnesia, but it is not clear whether this learning is supported by episodic or semantic memory. We report a case of a 55-year-old man who experienced severe amnesia after limited damage to the medial temporal lobe following neurosurgical complications. His general cognitive performance and knowledge of new French words and public events that occurred before and after the onset of amnesia were assessed. Performance remained satisfactory on post-morbid vocabulary and public events, with a drop in performance observed for very recent public events only, while knowledge of very recent vocabulary was comparable to that of the control subjects. The implications of these findings for our understanding of the underlying learning mechanisms are discussed. Literature supports the positive effects of psychological well-being (P.W.B.) on health. However, most studies focused on the unitary construct of P.W.B., neglecting the different role played by distinct P.W.B. dimensions on health-related outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine whether unbalanced (i.e. low or high) levels of P.W.B. dimensions could differentially affect cardiac course after acute coronary syndrome (A.C.S.), in terms of participation in secondary prevention (S.P.) and/or survival. The sample included 136 depressed and/or demoralized A.C.S. patients referred for a S.P. program on lifestyle modification, in addition to routine cardiac visits provided by the hospital where they were admitted. Psychological assessment included validated interviews on depression and demoralization, Symptom Questionnaire and Psychological Well-Being scales. 100 patients joined the S.P. program, 36 did not. Logistic regression revealed that older age (B = 0.051; p < 0.05), higher autonomy (B = 0.070; p < 0.05) and lower personal growth (B = −0.073; p < 0.05) levels were associated with non-participation in S.P. Moreover, only among patients who did not join the program, those presenting with an impaired level of P.W.B. 'positive relations' dimension (i.e. below the 25th percentile) showed a worse cardiac prognosis (Log Rank: χ2(1) = 4.654; p = 0.031). Negative health outcomes in depressed cardiac patients, such as non-participation in S.P. and worse cardiac course, are associated with both high and low levels of certain P.W.B. dimensions. This study critically examines the mathematics knowledge of pre-service post-primary mathematics teachers (N = 85) on commencing their Professional Master of Education (Level 9) initial teacher education (ITE) programme across four institutions in Ireland. Given the nature of a consecutive approach to mathematics teacher education, pre-service teachers enter their ITE programme from a variety of undergraduate degree backgrounds and it is largely accepted that their mathematical content knowledge does not change during their teacher qualification programme. This study utilises a paper-and-pencil test to assess participants' cognitive and conceptual proficiency with curriculum-aligned mathematical content. Between group comparisons in relation to participants' undergraduate studies and cognitive and conceptual proficiency are also examined. The data suggest that pre-service teachers demonstrate a strong proficiency with Junior Cycle curriculum-aligned content and poor proficiency with Senior Cycle content, irrespective of the curriculum strand. In addition, significant mean differences exist between participants who had undertaken undergraduate degree studies in physics and mathematics in comparison to other degree programmes. Such investigations are essential given the increased focused on developing highly qualified teachers and policy revisions on ITE programmes. Acrylonitrile (ACN) is a known rodent and possible human carcinogen. There have also been concerns as to it causing adverse reproductive health effects. Numerous genotoxicity studies at the somatic level in a variety of test systems have demonstrated ACN's mutagenicity; its potential to induce mutations in germ cells has also been evaluated. ACN is metabolized to reactive intermediates capable of forming adducts with macromolecules including DNA, a necessary first step in establishing a direct mutagenic mode of action (MOA) for its carcinogenicity. The mutagenicity of ACN has been well demonstrated, however, numerous studies have found no evidence for the capacity of ACN to induce direct DNA lesions that initiate the mutagenic process. Although ACN and its oxidative metabolite (2-cyanoethylene oxide or CNEO) have been shown to bind in vitro with isolated DNA and associated proteins, usually under non-physiological conditions, studies in mammalian cells or in vivo have provided little specification as to an ACN-DNA reaction. Only one early study in rats has shown an ACN/CNEO DNA adduct in liver, a non-target tissue for its carcinogenicity in the rat. By contrast, numerous studies have shown that ACN can act indirectly to induce at least one DNA adduct by forming reactive oxygen species (ROS) in vivo, but it has not been definitively shown that the resulting DNA damage is causative for the induction of mutations. Genotoxicity studies for ACN in somatic and germinal cells are summarized and critically reviewed. To investigate the applicability of carboxymethyl starch (CMS) as a carrier to prepare solid dispersions (SDs) of piperine (PIP) and 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid (β-GA) (PIP-CMS and β-GA-CMS SDs) and to explore the influence of drug properties on carrier selection. The low oral bioavailability of natural therapeutic molecules, including PIP and β-GA, severely restricts their pharmaceutical applications. Moreover, CMS, a natural polymer, is rarely reported as a carrier for SDs. PIP-CMS and β-GA-CMS SDs were prepared using the solvent evaporation method. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used for formulation characterization. Additionally, drug release characteristics were investigated. In vitro dissolution studies showed that the dissolutions of PIP-CMS and β-GA-CMS SDs were 1.90–2.04 and 1.97–2.22 times higher than pure PIP and β-GA, respectively, at a drug:polymer ratio of 1:6. DSC, XRPD, FT-IR, and SEM analyses confirmed the formation of SDs in their amorphous states. Significant improvements in Cmax and AUC0–24 h of PIP-CMS and β-GA-CMS SDs (17.51 ± 8.15 μg/mL and 210.28 ± 117.13 μg·h/mL, respectively) and (32.17 ± 9.45 μg/mL and 165.36 ± 38.75 μg·h/mL, respectively) were observed in the pharmacokinetic study. Compared with weakly acidic β-GA, loading weakly basic PIP seemed to have a profound effect on stability through intermolecular forces. Our findings showed CMS could be a promising carrier for SDs, and loading weakly basic drug may be more suitable, especially in binary SDs system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) is an important regulatory molecule of signal transduction pathways involved in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases such as immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), and the SYK-signaling pathway has emerged as a potential target for the treatment of numerous diseases. The aim of this narrative review is to summarize the biological properties of SYK and its involvement in disease pathways, provide an update on SYK inhibitors in the treatment of ITP, and consider other potential applications. Fostamatinib, the only licensed SYK inhibitor to date, produces clinical response in ITP patients, including those who are refractory to other treatments. It appears to reduce the risk of thrombotic events and may therefore be a drug to consider for patients with an increased thrombotic risk. Encouraging results have also been obtained in the treatment of warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Several other SYK inhibitors have entered clinical trials for a range of indications, reflecting the ability of these drugs to affect multiple signaling pathways. SYK inhibitors have the potential to target several aspects of COVID-19 pathogenesis including thrombosis, without affecting normal hemostasis, and data from the first study of fostamatinib in COVID-19 are encouraging. It is hoped that ongoing trials in autoimmune indications other than ITP, as well as in hematological malignancies and other disorders, confirm the promise of SYK inhibitors. Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disease that usually happens when your immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys platelets, which are cells that help blood to clot. Individuals with ITP can experience easy or excessive bruising and bleeding. Scientists have identified that an enzyme called spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) is involved in numerous biological processes that are associated with the immune system response, inflammation, and some types of cancer in humans. Therefore, it has become a target for new drugs which inhibit the action of SYK. In this review article, the authors provide a summary of the biological properties and actions of SYK and its involvement in various diseases, discuss information about drugs that have been developed as SYK inhibitors for the treatment of ITP, and consider other potential uses for drugs that inhibit SYK. Although several drugs are being developed, the only SYK inhibitor that is currently available for the treatment of ITP is a drug called fostamatinib. In patients with ITP, including those who no longer respond to other treatments, fostamatinib has been shown to improve platelet counts and reduce bleeding events. Researchers are also currently investigating the use of drugs that inhibit SYK, including fostamatinib, for the potential treatment of other diseases associated with inflammation (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, COVID-19), autoimmunity (e.g. warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia), and blood cancers (e.g. lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and acute myeloid leukemia). Objective: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the efficacy and safety of umbilical cord milking (UCM) versus delayed cord clamping (DCC) in term and late-preterm infants. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Clinical trial registries, and Gray literature were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing UCM with DCC in term and late-preterm infants for both short-term and long-term outcomes. Intact and cut UCM were compared separately with DCC using subgroup analysis. We used fixed effect model to pool the data. Random effects model was used when there was significant heterogeneity. Results: Nine studies (1632 infants) were included in the systematic review. Milking was performed on intact cord (i-UCM) in five studies (n = 829) and on cut cord (c-UCM) in four studies (n = 803). Cord milking significantly improved hemoglobin level at 48-72 h of life when compared to DCC (six studies, n = 924, mean difference 0.36 g/dL; 95% CI: 0.19-0.53). In addition, hemoglobin level at six to eight weeks of age was also significantly higher in the studies comparing i-UCM with DCC (two studies, n = 550: mean difference 0.16 g/dL; 95% CI: 0.06-0.27). There was no difference between the UCM group and DCC group for any other outcome. Only one study provided information on growth and hematological parameters at one year of age. Neurodevelopmental outcomes were not reported. None of the studies included non-vigorous infants. The grade of evidence was low to very low for all the outcomes studied. Conclusion: UCM is comparable to DCC in improving short-term hematological outcomes in term and late-preterm vigorous infants. Objective: To evaluate the predictive value of a low early glucose challenge test (GCT) in ruling out a subsequent diagnosis of gestational diabetes in the second trimester. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of women at a single clinic who had a normal early GCT between 2016 and 2020. Patients who did not have repeat screening in the late second trimester were excluded. Demographic data were extracted from the record. The primary outcome was a normal GCT or glucose tolerance test in the late second trimester. Logistic regression and receiver operator curves (ROC) were performed to assess the ability of the early GCT value to predict subsequent normal glucose screening. Results: Of the 532 pregnant persons with normal early GCT, 62 (11.7%) were subsequently diagnosed with gestational diabetes in the second trimester. None of the patients (N = 56), who had a GCT value less than 80 mg/dL were diagnosed with gestational diabetes in the second trimester. The prediction of subsequent normal screening using the early GCT on a ROC plot produced an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.67, 95% CI (0.60–0.74). Adding age, prior history of gestational diabetes and family history of diabetes mellitus to the prediction, only improved the AUC to 0.75, 95% CI (0.66, 0.82). Conclusion: Early GCT value was a fair predictor for normal second trimester glucose testing for gestational diabetes. Background: Risk factors for severe SARS-CoV2 infection in pregnancy have not been extensively studied. This information can help guide the management of pregnant women with COVID-19. Objective: Examine risk factors for severe COVID-19 in pregnant women. Methods: We reviewed the records of all pregnant women with positive SARS-CoV2 tests (qRT-PCR) managed at a single tertiary private maternity in Sao Paulo, Brazil. We categorized women as having non-severe (mild or moderate) or severe (severe or critical) COVID-19. We conducted multivariable analyses to identify differences in sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the two groups as risk factors for severe COVID-19. Results: Between March 13 and June 7 2020, 114 women tested positive for SARS-CoV-2; 80.7% (n = 92) had non-severe disease (69 mild, 23 moderate), 15.7% (n = 18) had severe, and 3.5% (n = 4) had critical COVID-19. Women with severe/critical COVID-19 (n = 22) were significantly older (35.0 ± 5.9 × 31.8 ± 5.1 years, p = 0.011), more likely to have at least one medical comorbidity (81.8% × 52.2%, p = .011) or a history of asthma (18.2% × 3.3%, p = .025), and tended to have a higher median body mass index (30.1 kg/m2, IQR 28.1–33.9 × 28.6, IQR 26.2–32.0, p = .056) than women with non-severe disease. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified four factors as independent predictors of severe/critical COVID-19: asthma (OR 34.469, 95% CI 1.151–78.030, p = .026), non-white ethnicity (OR 7.932, 95% CI 1.311–47.973, p = .024), maternal age with a best cutoff of ≥ 34 years (OR 1.195, 95% CI 1.001–1.427, p = .048) and gestational age at diagnosis with a best cut-off of ≥ 35 weeks (OR 0.876, 95% CI 0.780–0.983, p = .025). The predictive value of the model including all variables was 0.823 (p < .001). Conclusion: A history of asthma, non-white ethnicity, and older maternal age were risk factors for, while higher gestational age was protective against severe/critical COVID-19 in pregnant Brazilian women. We will describe in two articles ("Sense of self and psychosis", 1 and 2) the theoretical basis and the methodology of a new therapeutic group approach called amniotic therapy, which aims to improve the sense of self of psychotic patients. In this first article we explore the role of the surface of the body and its early sensorimotor interactions in the processes of self/other identification and differentiation. We propose that these processes have common origins, the body surface and its interactions, but different destinies, depending on where the body's surface is projected. When it is projected intrapsychically we have differentiation, and when it is projected externally onto the body's surface of the other, we have identification. Identification is a reciprocal process, in which the self's and the other's surfaces mutually contain each other and co-create a shared field. Src tyrosine kinases and spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) have recently been shown to contribute to sustained platelet aggregation on collagen under arterial shear. In the present study, we have investigated whether Src and Syk are required for aggregation under minimal shear following activation of glycoprotein VI (GPVI) and have extended this to C-type lectin-like receptor-2 (CLEC-2) which signals through the same pathway. Aggregation was induced by the GPVI ligand collagen-related peptide (CRP) and the CLEC-2 ligand rhodocytin and monitored by light transmission aggregometry (LTA). Aggregation and tyrosine phosphorylation by both receptors were sustained for up to 50 min. The addition of inhibitors of Src, Syk or Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) at 150 sec, by which time aggregation was maximal, induced rapid loss of tyrosine phosphorylation of their downstream proteins, but only Src kinase inhibition caused a weak (~10%) reversal in light transmission. A similar effect was observed when the inhibitors were combined with apyrase and indomethacin or glycoprotein IIb-IIIa (GPIIb-IIIa) antagonist, eptifibatide. On the other hand, activation of GPIIb-IIIa by GPVI in a diluted platelet suspension, as measured by binding of fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled antibody specific for the activated GPIIb-IIIa (FITC-PAC1), was reversed on the addition of Src and Syk inhibitors showing that integrin activation is rapidly reversible in the absence of outside-in signals. The results demonstrate that Src but not Syk and Btk contribute to sustained aggregation as monitored by LTA, possibly as a result of inhibition of outside-in signaling from GPIIb-IIIa to the cytoskeleton through a Syk-independent pathway. Childhood obesity affects around 7–8% of children in Ireland and is associated with increased risks of health complications. Data on healthcare resource use and the related costs for children with obesity are important for research, future service-planning, efforts to reduce the burden on families, and care pathways. However, there is little or no data available to describe these in Ireland. We undertook a retrospective chart review for 322 children attending a national paediatric weight management service to assess their hospital service utilisation, and the associated costs, over a four-year period. We used a micro-costing approach and estimated unit costs for different types of hospital services. Multivariable negative binomial regression analyses and Cragg hurdle models were used to assess characteristics associated with type, frequency and costs of hospital care. Eighty-two percent of children had severe obesity, and thirty-eight percent had a co-morbid condition. Over the four-year period, children had a mean of 27 (median 24, IQR 16–33) episodes of care at a mean cost of €2590 per child (median €1659, IQR 1026–3103). The presence of a co-morbid condition was associated with more frequent visits. Neither severity of obesity nor socioeconomic status were associated with overall service utilisation. The Cragg hurdle model did not identify statistically significant differences in hospital costs according to participant characteristics. Children with obesity frequently visit a variety of paediatric services and children with co-morbid conditions have greater levels of hospital utilisation. Further research is needed with larger sample sizes to explore variation in healthcare utilisation in this population, and the relationship between common co-morbidities and weight status. This would facilitate assessment of the implications for care pathways and examination of associations between patient outcomes and related healthcare costs and cost-effectiveness. Mining resources have played a leading role in the development of humanity, and the demand for these raw materials is expected to increase in the foreseeable future. In addition, new technologies also require the extraction of new critical materials. These trends pose various challenges as there is a limited supply of natural resources, and standard mining and mineral processing practices are associated with significant environmental impacts, such as waste generation, energy and water consumption, and CO2 emissions. The circular economy (CE) has recently gained attention as a model to address such a complex scenario. This work analyzes the current efforts toward the application of CE in mineral processing. Although advances have been made, this review shows that the most significant material flows and environmental impacts occur near the production sites, which currently limits the closure of loops. Besides, mining industries are conservative regarding the adoption of new technologies or processing strategies, which is another hindrance to the implementation of the CE. Thus, and with few exceptions, while some sectors are already facing advanced stages of CE (namely, CE 3.0), the mineral processing field struggles to advance from the basic CE requirements (i.e, CE 1.0 to CE 2.0). Previous research has demonstrated that retirees tend to report lower levels for sense of purpose compared to working adults. However, it remains unclear whether adults show differences in the extent to which they expect to be purposeful during retirement, and what that may mean for the propensity to plan for retirement. The current study examined this question in a cross-sectional sample of 492 adults (Age: M = 39.28, SD = 8.35) prior to retirement. Participants completed an adapted measure to capture expected purposeful engagement during retirement, along with sense of purpose, retirement planning, and the Big Five personality traits. Factor analyses and zero-order correlations suggested that purposeful retirement perceptions are related yet distinct from sense of purpose in general, and adults on average expect a moderately purposeful retirement. Purposeful retirement scores were associated with multiple retirement planning scales, and remained predictive of retirement preparation even when accounting for the Big Five and demographic factors. Adults differ in how purposeful they expect to be during their future retirement. Moreover, these differences may be a valuable consideration when understanding how to promote retirement planning. This study used a modified mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) framework to compare the common content knowledge (CCK) of two groups of purposively selected pre-service primary mathematics teachers (n = 86) in relation to spatial visualization. Specifically, thirty-five pre-service teachers (n1 = 35) with a pure school mathematics background and fifty-one pre-service teachers (n2 = 51) with a high school mathematical literacy background worked on problems that involved spatial objects, their properties and relationships. The responses of pre-service teachers with a mathematical literacy content background to the Surface Development Test (SDT) were significantly different from their counterparts' which suggested that their CCK in relation to spatial visualization was thin. Analysis of the Probes questionnaire which inquired about the pre-service teachers' views on the concept of spatial visualization showed that misconceptions hindered their performance. Objective: Sense of purpose has been associated with greater health and well-being, even in daily contexts. However, it is unclear whether effects would hold in daily life during COVID-19, when people may have difficulty seeing a path towards their life goals. Design: The current study investigated whether purposefulness predicted daily positive affect, negative affect, and physical symptoms. Participants (n = 831) reported on these variables during the first weeks of the COVID-19 response in North America. Main outcome measures: Participants completed daily surveys asking them for daily positive events, stressors, positive affect, negative affect, physical symptoms, and purposefulness. Results: Purposefulness at between- and within-person levels predicted less negative affect and physical symptoms, but more positive affect at the daily level. Between-person purposefulness interacted with positive events when predicting negative and positive affect, suggesting that purposeful people may be less reactive to positive events. However, between-person purposefulness also interacted with daily stressors, insofar that stressors predicted greater declines in positive affect for purposeful people. Conclusion: Being a purposeful person holds positive implications for daily health and well-being, even during the pandemic context. Objective: We sought to determine whether the diagnostic terms 'mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI)' and 'concussion' result in differences in perceived cognitive, emotional, and post-concussive sequelae.Method: A total of 81 healthy university students (79% female; 69% of Asian descent) were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: mTBI (n = 41), or concussion (n = 40), and were instructed to simulate on a battery of cognitive (Neuropsychological Assessment Battery - Screening Module), emotional (Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory-II), and post-concussive (Rivermead Postconcussive Symptoms Questionnaire) measures.Results: There were no significant group differences between expected cognitive, emotional, or post-concussive consequences. However, both groups received poorer scores than the normative data.Conclusions: These results suggest that diagnostic terminology does not appear to influence anticipated recovery following mild brain injury. However, the presentation of information about the injury itself may impact recovery outcomes. This study provides preliminary support for the potential negative effects that may arise as a result of providing participants with non-evidence based information about mild brain injuries. Family systems theories consider cohesion, flexibility, and communication as distinct but related key dimensions of family functioning. These dimensions are underexplored within adoptive families. We investigated the extent to which family cohesion, flexibility, and adoption communication openness relate to the adjustment of adoptees in adolescence. A self-report questionnaire was completed by 134 family triads, composed of internationally adopted adolescents and their parents, for a total of 402 participants. Adoptees and their parents shared similarities, but also differences in perceptions of cohesion, flexibility, and adoption communication openness, all playing specific roles within the family context. Structural equation model with family-level analyses showed that the association between cohesion and the adjustment of adoptees was mediated by adoption communication openness, whereas flexibility was not associated with either communication openness nor with the adjustment of adoptees. Responding to DSM's call for research on Persistent Complex Bereavement Disorder (PCBD), this study examined to what extent people perceive the criteria as pathological. In total, 385 undergraduate students answered the Continuing Bonds Scale and Persistent Complex Bereavement Inventory as they believe an ideally healthy person of their demographic would respond 12 months post loss. People identifying as women, religious, without past bereavement, and who endorsed continuing bonds as normal tended to perceive PCBD criteria as more normative. Using a matching framework and high-quality administrative longitudinal and survey data, we evaluate the effectiveness of a second-chance education opportunity scheme, the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA), in assisting jobseekers to find employment on completion of their course. The results from two separate datasets indicate that BTEA scheme participation had large negative consequences for subsequent employment transitions. Further analysis revealed the negative impacts are likely to be related to flaws in the BTEA scheme framework rather than deficits in the quality of the education received. While repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has shown efficacy for cognitive difficulties accompanying depression, it is unknown if it can improve cognition in persons with traumatic brain injury. Using a sham-controlled crossover design, we tested the capacity of high frequency rTMS of the prefrontal cortex to improve neuropsychological performance in attention, learning and memory, and executive function. Twenty-six participants with cognitive complaints and a history of mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury were randomly assigned to receive first either active or sham 10 Hz stimulation for 20 minutes (1200 pulses) per session for five consecutive days. After a one-week washout, the other condition (active or sham) was applied. Pre- and post-treatment measures included neuropsychological tests, cognitive and emotional symptoms, and EEG. Results indicated no effect of treatment on cognitive function. Subjective measures of depression, sleep dysfunction, post-concussive symptoms (PCS), and executive function showed significant improvement with stimulation, retaining improved levels at two-week follow-up. EEG delta power exhibited elevation one week after stimulation cessation. While there is no indication that rTMS is beneficial for neuropsychological performance, it may improve PCS and subjective cognitive dysfunction. As COVID-19 spreads across the world, there are concerns that people with asthma are at a higher risk of acquiring the disease, or of poorer outcomes. This systematic review aimed to summarize evidence on the risk of infection, severe illness and death from COVID-19 in people with asthma. A comprehensive search of electronic databases including preprint repositories and WHO COVID-19 database was conducted (until 26 May 2020). Studies reporting COVID-19 in people with asthma were included. For binary outcomes, we performed Sidik-Jonkman random effects meta-analysis. We explored quantitative heterogeneity by subgroup analyses, meta regression and evaluating the I2 statistic. Fifty-seven studies with an overall sample size of 587 280 were included. The prevalence of asthma among those infected with COVID-19 was 7.46% (95% CI = 6.25–8.67). Non-severe asthma was more common than severe asthma (9.61% vs. 4.13%). Pooled analysis showed a 14% risk ratio reduction in acquiring COVID-19 (95% CI = 0.80–0.94; p < 0.0001) and 13% reduction in hospitalization with COVID-19 (95% CI = 0.77–0.99, p = 0.03) for people with asthma compared with those without. There was no significant difference in the combined risk of requiring admission to ICU and/or receiving mechanical ventilation for people with asthma (RR = 0.87 95% CI = 0.94–1.37; p = 0.19) and risk of death from COVID-19 (RR = 0.87; 95% CI = 0.68–1.10; p = 0.25). The findings from this study suggest that the prevalence of people with asthma among COVID-19 patients is similar to the global prevalence of asthma. The overall findings suggest that people with asthma have a lower risk than those without asthma for acquiring COVID-19 and have similar clinical outcomes. Vaccination can be effective defense against many infectious agents and the corresponding diseases. Discoveries elucidating the mechanisms of the immune system have given hopes to developing vaccines against diseases recalcitrant to current treatment/prevention strategies. One such finding is the ability of immunogenic biological nanoparticles to powerfully boost the immunogenicity of poorer antigens conjugated to them with virus-like particle (VLP)-based vaccines as a key example. VLPs take advantage of the well-defined molecular structures associated with sub-unit vaccines and the immunostimulatory nature of conjugate vaccines. In this review, we will discuss how advances in understanding the immune system can inform VLP-based vaccine design and how VLP-based vaccines have uncovered underlying mechanisms in the immune system. As our understanding of mechanisms underlying the immune system increases, that knowledge should inform our vaccine design. Testing of proof-of-concept vaccines in the lab should seek to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of immune responses. Negative marital interaction and purpose in life have been associated with depressive symptoms. Yet, these associations have not been fully explored in a dyadic context. This study examines the actor (intra-individual) and partner (cross-spousal) effects of negative marital interaction on depressive symptoms in couples and the potential mediating role of purpose in life. Data came from 1186 heterosexual married couples who participated in the 2016 (T1) and 2018 (T2) waves of the Health and Retirement Study and completed the psychosocial questionnaire in 2016. Structural equation modeling was used to estimate the direct and indirect associations among T1 negative marital interaction, T1 purpose in life, and T2 depressive symptoms at the actor and partner levels. Models controlled for age, race, educational level, self-rated health, and length of marriage. At the actor level, a greater negative marital interaction was associated with significantly lower levels of purpose in life for husbands and wives. Negative marital interaction was also associated with depressive symptoms for wives. Purpose in life mediated the relationship between negative marital interaction and depressive symptoms. At the partner level, wives' negative marital interaction was negatively associated with husbands' purpose in life, independent of husbands' own effects. The findings support the dominant marital discord model of depression and highlight gender differences in the cross-spousal effects of negative marital interaction on purpose in life. Migraine, which is a highly prevalent headache, is often comorbid with alexithymia. Parental styles contribute to the development of alexithymia. The core psychological mechanisms that connect parenting to alexithymia and can be targeted in psychotherapy are not yet studied. The objective of this study was to explore the role of emotional schemas as a possible mediator between perceived parental styles and alexithymia in migraine patients. Study participants consisted of 208 (67 males and 141 females) Iranians who completed the Farsi version of Toronto Alexithymia Scale (FTAS-20), Leahy Emotional Schema Scale (LESS II), and Measure of Parental Styles (MOPS) online. For mediation analysis, structural equation modeling was used based on Baron and Kenny's mediation model. The results demonstrated that mother overprotection and mother indifference were significantly related to alexithymia in migraine patients. Emotional schemas and alexithymia were also positively and significantly related. Additionally, mother overprotection and father indifference showed positive and significant covariation with emotional schemas. Data analysis with structural equation modeling revealed that emotional schemas partially mediate the relationship between parental styles and alexithymia in migraine patients. The current study expands our knowledge of possible mechanisms that relate childhood experiences of being parented and alexithymia in migraine patients. Much has been discovered about well-being since 1998, when positive psychology entered the lexicon. Among the wide range of areas in positive psychology, in this commentary we discuss recent discoveries on (1) distinctions between meaning in life, a sense of purpose, and happiness, (2) psychological or personality strengths and the benefits of particular combinations, and (3) resilience after exposure to adversity. We propose a series of questions about this literature with the hope that well-being researchers and practitioners continue to update their perspectives based on high-quality scientific findings and revise old views that rely on shaky empirical ground. There is a gap in the use of evidence in bereavement care. Implementation science is a field focused on moving evidence into practice and therefore may help close the gap. Implementation science advances the design, relevance, and dissemination of research and the adoption, implementation, and maintenance of evidence-based practices. We provide an overview of implementation science, describe five implementation frameworks (Knowledge to Action; Behavior Change Wheel; Exploration Preparation Implementation Sustainment; Interactive Systems Framework; and Reach, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance), and illustrate their application in bereavement care. One outcome of DNA damage from hydroxyl radical generated by ionizing radiation (IR) or by the Fenton reaction is oxidation of the nucleobases, especially guanine (G). While 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (OG) is a commonly studied oxidized lesion, several others are formed in high abundance, including 5-carboxamido-5-formamido-2-iminohydantoin (2Ih), a prevalent product in in vitro chemistry that is challenging to study from cellular sources. In this short review, we have a goal of explaining new insights into hydroxyl radical-induced oxidation chemistry of G in DNA and comparing it to endogenous DNA damage, as well as commenting on the biological outcomes of DNA base damage. Pathways of oxidation of G are discussed and a comparison is made between IR (hydroxyl radical chemistry) and endogenous oxidative stress that largely forms carbonate radical anion as a reactive intermediate. These pathways overlap with the formation of OG and 2Ih, but other guanine-derived lesions are more pathway specific. The biological consequences of guanine oxidation include both mutagenesis and epigenetics; a new mechanism of gene regulation via the base excision repair pathway is described for OG, whereas the impact of IR in forming guanine modifications may be to confound this process in addition to introduction of mutagenic sites. The knowledge, attitudes, skills, and training of professionals regarding complicated grief influence their practice. We conducted 30 semi-structured interviews with psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselor/psychotherapists; the preliminary findings were contextualized via interviews with three experts in complicated grief research/practice. Findings suggest that professionals did not substantially rely on research evidence, favoring instead personal and professional knowledge. They expressed concern regarding the possible pathologization of normal grief that might arise from having a diagnosis of complicated grief. Deficits in professional training were evident. A need for an improved culture of collaboration between researchers and practitioners was identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
