To assess the potential of a paper diary for strengthening accountability in public agricultural extension services. Therefore a paper diary called 'Diary for Agricultural Extension Officers' was developed and tested in Uganda. A qualitative case study research approach was applied for the development and assessment of the diary. Data were collected using focus group discussions and individual face-to-face interviews. Data analysis was conducted using the content analysis method. Paper diaries can strengthen accountability in public agricultural extension services by enabling alignment of the extension activities of the field agents to the goals of the extension service and to the needs of the beneficiaries, in addition to mitigating information asymmetry about the extension activities. However, the implementation of paper diaries requires sensitization of the beneficiaries on the need for verification and feedback. This study is centred around addressing a practical problem of field agents' accountability and results have the potential to improve management of public services such as agricultural extension. Moreover, the findings could also be relevant for all types of organizations and service delivery methods. This study expanded the boundaries of the principal-agent theory by applying it to the accountability of agricultural extension services using paper diaries, which have hitherto not been widely applied. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating psychiatric disorder that affects a significant number of individuals worldwide. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is among the most common comorbidities reported in people with OCD. The emergence of MDD in individuals with OCD can be attributed to the increased severity of OCD symptoms and their profound impact on daily functioning. Depressive symptoms can also modify the course of OCD. In this review, the authors explore potential shared neurobiological mechanisms that may underlie both OCD and MDD, such as disturbed sleep patterns, immunological dysregulations, and neuroendocrine changes. Furthermore, they address the challenges clinicians face when managing comorbid OCD and MDD. The authors also discuss a range of treatment options for OCD associated with MDD, including augmentation strategies for serotonin reuptake inhibitors (e.g. aripiprazole), psychotherapy (especially CBT/EPR), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and deep brain stimulation (DBS). Although there is no 'rule of thumb' or universally acceptable strategy in the treatment of OCD comorbid with MDD, many clinicians, including the authors, tend to adopt a unique transdiagnostic approach to the treatment of OCD and related disorders, focusing on strategies known to be effective across diagnoses. Up to 39% of women who experience perinatal bereavement proceed to develop Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder (PTSD), with this large proportion meriting treatment. Before setting-up a treatment service for postnatal women who are experiencing psychological trauma, it is important to identify what therapies have been used in-the-past to address this problem. To scope for research that has implemented therapies to treat psychological trauma post perinatal bereavement, for potential inclusion in a flexible treatment package. A scoping review mapped coverage, range, and type of research that has reported on prior therapies used to treat psychological trauma post perinatal bereavement. Due to the dearth of papers that directly addressed perinatal bereavement, we widened the scope of the review to view what treatments had been used to treat psychological trauma post-childbirth. Out of 23 studies that report on effectiveness of therapies used to treat psychological trauma post-childbirth, only 4-focused upon treating PTSD post perinatal bereavement (3 effective/1 ineffective). Successful treatments were reported by Kersting et al. (2013), who found CBT effective at reducing PTSD symptoms post-miscarriage, termination for medical reasons, and stillbirth (n = 33 & n = 115), and Navidian et al. (2s017)) found that 4-sessions of grief-counselling reduced trauma symptoms post-stillbirth in (n = 50) women. One study by Huberty et al. (2020found on-line yoga to be ineffective at reducing PTSD symptoms post-stillbirth. A dearth of research has explored effectiveness of therapies for treating psychological trauma post perinatal bereavement and post-childbirth, with need to develop and test a research informed flexible counselling package. Hypnotherapy has been gaining recognition as an alternative treatment for excess weight problems. This qualitative study aims to explore individuals' experiences of losing weight through hypnotherapy and their perceived barriers and facilitators for healthy lifestyle changes. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 15 participants (11 women and 4 men; mean age of 23 years) who recorded having lost ≥5% weight after undergoing 3 hypnotherapy sessions previously at a public university in Terengganu, Malaysia. Each interview was audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The themes that emerged were the usefulness of hypnotherapy, barriers, and facilitators of healthy lifestyle changes. All participants contended that hypnotherapy played a role in their weight-loss journey through increased mindful eating and enhanced motivation to make lifestyle modifications. Barriers to healthy lifestyle changes included high costs of healthy foods and lack of support for healthy food sources in social and family settings. Evidence supporting the direct therapeutic benefits of neuropsychological assessment (NPA) feedback relies mostly upon post-feedback consumer surveys. This randomized-controlled trial with cross-over investigated the benefits of NPA feedback in multiple sclerosis (MS). Seventy-one participants were randomly allocated to NPA with feedback or a "delayed-treatment" control group. The primary hypotheses were that NPA feedback would lead to improved knowledge of cognitive functioning and improved coping. Outcome instruments were administered by a research assistant blinded to group allocation. At 1-week post-NPA feedback there were no significant group-by-time interaction effects, indicating no improvement. But nor was there any significant deterioration in psychological wellbeing, despite most participants receiving "bad news" confirming cognitive impairment. At 1-month follow-up, within-subjects' analyses not only found no evidence of any delayed deterioration, but showed clinically significant improvement (small-medium effects) in perceived everyday cognitive functioning, MS self-efficacy, stress and depression. Despite lack of improvement in the RCT component at 1-week post-NPA feedback, the absence of deterioration at this time, in addition to significant improvements in perceived cognitive functioning, self-efficacy and mood at follow-up, together with high satisfaction ratings, all support NPA feedback as a safe psycho-educational intervention that is followed by improved psychological wellbeing over time. In 2021, the Arts and Humanities Research Council commissioned a mass-media mental health campaign called "What's up With Everyone?" Here, innovative co-created messages were professionally storied and animated by an internationally recognized production company and focused on improving mental health literacy in five core areas: competition, social media, perfectionism, loneliness and isolation, and independence. This study examines the impact of the "What's up With Everyone?" campaign on young people's mental health awareness. Seventy-one (19 males, 51 females, M age = 19.20 years, SD = 1.66, range = 17–22) young people completed a one-sample, pre-post experiment to measure changes in knowledge, attitudes, confidence, and stigma of mental health struggles, as well as help-seeking for mental ill-health before and following exposure to animations. Paired and one-sample t-tests revealed that knowledge, attitudes, confidence, and willingness to seek support improved at post-test. There were also significant reductions in the stigma towards depression following the animations. Continued long-term investment in campaigns such as "What's up With Everyone?" seems warranted given the impact on mental health awareness, help-seeking, and stigma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic condition linked to a wide range of psychological difficulties. While traditional cognitive behavioural therapy has been studied extensively with people with MS, much less is known about more recent "third wave" approaches. A scoping review was carried out by performing a systematic search across MEDLINE Complete, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Academic Search Ultimate, and Cochrane Library up to January 2022. From an initial return of 8306 citations, 35 studies were included, 20 of which were randomised controlled trials (RCTs). These showed that four third wave approaches have been investigated with people with MS to date: acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). MBSR and MBCT may be helpful to address a range of psychological difficulties up to three months post-intervention. However, MS-specific adaptations may be required, and more evidence is needed on longer-term effectiveness. Limited evidence is also available for DBT and ACT, but additional research is warranted before any recommendation can be made. As third wave approaches keep being refined, further more rigorous investigations are needed to implement them to the benefit of people with MS. Multiple sclerosis is linked to a wide range of psychological difficulties in adults. Little is currently known on third wave psychotherapies for people with MS. Mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy may be helpful to address a wide range of difficulties in MS. Quantifying a significant cognitive change on a neuropsychological battery is essential to assess patients' decline or recovery and offer appropriate care. The reliability of change indices is particularly important in multiple sclerosis (MS), as the course of cognitive impairment is quite unpredictable, due at least in part to substantial interindividual variability. The main objective of this study was to compare six different methods for assessing cognitive change in an MS sample: the SD method, two reliable change indices, two standardized regression-based methods (SRB), and the generalized regression-based method (GSRB). One hundred and twenty-three patients with clinically definite MS and 89 healthy controls underwent a battery of standardized neuropsychological tests assessing cognitive functions that are frequently affected in this disease (i.e., verbal episodic memory, working memory, processing speed and verbal fluency). We observed fairly similar proportions of improvement, decline or stability in the control group whatever the method. By contrast, in the MS sample, regression-based methods with one predictor (i.e., score at T1) and four predictors (i.e., score at T1 and demographic factors: age, sex, education level) detected a significant worsening more often than the reliable change indices while the GSRB method was more consistent with the RCI methods in tasks associated with ceiling effects. The interpretation of a patient's cognitive changes depends on which method is used. The (G)SRB methods appear to be relevant indicators for assessing cognitive change in MS. The addition of demographic factors does not seem to play an important role in the prediction of significant worsening in the MS sample, regardless of cognitive domain. This article explores the use of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) as an alternative treatment for adults with Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Since the traditional mental health system showed significant limitations in the early identification, diagnosis and treatment of the current new youth psychopathological trajectories, by substantially failing in targeting the needs of the current young generation, there is the demand to redesign and digitally adapt youth mental health care and systems. Indeed, the level of digital literacy and the level of digital competency and knowledge in the field of digital psychiatry is still under-investigated among mental health professionals, particularly in youth mental health. Therefore, we aimed at: (a) carrying out a post-hoc analysis of an international multi-centre study, to investigate the opinions of mental health professionals regarding the feasibility, efficacy and clinical experience in delivering digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) in youths; (b) providing a comprehensive overview on the integrated digitally-based youth mental health care models and innovations. Mental health professionals declared the lack of a formal training in digital psychiatry, particularly in youth mental health. Subjects who received a formal theoretical/practical training on DMHIs displayed a statistical trend towards a positive feasibility of digital psychiatry in youth mental health (p = 0.053) and a perceived increased efficacy of digital psychiatry in youths (p = 0.051). Respondents with higher Digital Psychiatry Opinion (DPO) scores reported a positive perceived feasibility of DMHIs in youths (p < 0.041) and are more prone to deliver DMHIs to young people (p < 0.001). Respondents with higher knowledge scores (KS) declared that DMHIs are more effective in youth mental health (p < 0.001). Overall, the digitalisation indeed allowed young people to keep in touch with a mental health professional, facilitating a more dynamic and fluid mental health care access and monitoring, generally preferred and considered more feasible by post-Millennial youngsters. Accordingly, our findings demonstrated that mental health professionals are more prone to offer DMHIs in youth mental health, particularly whether previously trained and knowledgeable on the topic. Telepsychology and mHealth (TPmH) services for youth and their families have become increasingly prevalent in recent years. However, significant limitations in theory, research, and policy introduce questions about the effectiveness of such interventions, particularly for racial-ethnic minoritized youth and their families, who already contend with inequities in mental health treatment access and outcomes. Although TPmH have the potential to reduce barriers to mental health services in ways that may benefit racial-ethnic minoritized youth and their families, the mental health field must first grapple with limitations in culturally responsive TPmH work to avoid perpetuating existing mental health inequities. As such, this article begins by briefly reviewing extant literature on (1) TPmH for youth, (2) culturally adapted or culturally responsive evidence-based interventions for racial-ethnic minoritized youth and families, and (3) the intersection of TPmH and culturally responsive interventions. Informed by the gaps identified by this review, we provide recommendations for future directions in culturally responsive TPmH for racial-ethnic minoritized youth and families. These recommendations have been organized into four overarching categories: (1) conceptual and theoretical recommendations, (2) research priorities, (3) practice and policy recommendations, and (4) engagement and access recommendations. These recommendations offer novel ideas for researchers, clinicians, funding agencies, policy-makers, and other key stakeholders and are intended to facilitate equity in TPmH for racial-ethnic minoritized youth and their families. This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examined effects of mindfulness- and acceptance-based interventions (MABIs) on quality of life (QoL), coping, cognition, and mindfulness among people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Four electronic databases were searched to 3 July 2020. Data was combined in a random-effects meta-analysis model. Eighteen RCTs met the eligibility criteria. Meta-analyses at the immediate posttest found: moderate effects of MABIs on QoL, coping, and attention; and a large effect on memory. A large effect of MABIs on QoL was found at follow-up. There was no significant effect of MABIs on mindfulness. Relatively fewer studies in outcomes other than QoL were found, and the overall risk of bias across the included 18 RCTs was unclear. Future high-quality studies with follow-up evaluations are needed to support effects of MABIs on QoL, coping, cognition, and mindfulness in people with MS and examine intervention features that increase and maintain effects. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how end-of-life ceremonies are performed, affecting grief processing and bereavement experiences. In this study, caregivers of patients who died with COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic were asked to complete an online survey designed to detect psychosocial factors associated with the presence of complicated grief (CG). The results show CG present in 48.4% of caregivers. The marital and cohabitant status during lockdown, the perceived sense of guilt and depression levels were significantly associated with the presence of CG, whereas attendance at the funeral and social support were found to be significant protective factors. Medical conditions could partly underlie sexual dysfunction among post-menopausal women. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between medical conditions and sexual function in post-menopausal women. This is a cross-sectional study of 405 post-menopausal women. A multistage random sampling was initially carried out. The data was collected through interviews using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire and a self-administered questionnaire, and was analyzed using the chi-square test, the t-test and multiple linear regression. The results showed that sexual dysfunction was more prevalent among the participants with medical conditions (p = 0.037). Scores of arousal (p = 0.000), orgasm (p = 0.018), and satisfaction (p = 0.026), along with the FSFI total scores (p = 0.005), were significantly lower in the participants suffering from cardiovascular disorders. Scores of desire (p = 0.001), arousal (p = 0.006), lubrication (p = 0.010), orgasm (p = 0.004), and satisfaction (p = 0.022), as well as the FSFI total scores (p = 0.017), were significantly lower among the participants with diabetes. Scores in the pain domain were significantly lower among those with musculoskeletal disorders (p = 0.041). We conclude that cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and musculoskeletal disorders could have a negative impact on the sexual function of post-menopausal women. Covid-19 has been sweeping over the world for more than a year. People with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) might be particularly vulnerable either for the disease iteself or for the ongoing immune treatment. The aim of this review is to understand the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown on patients with MS and to provide evidence-based advice to ensure them a high standard of care even during the pandemic. Literature search was conducted in the Scopus, Web of Science, Pubmed electronic databases, and articles reference lists to investigate the effect of Covid-19 on MS patients' treatment, access to health-care services and mental-health.The search terms 'multiple sclerosis' AND 'Covid-19' were combined with each of the following term 'disease modifying treatment,' 'steroids,' 'vaccination,' 'mental health,' 'stress,' 'quality of life,' 'management,' 'impact,' 'recommendations,' To ensure MS control during the pandemic, minimizing the risk of Covid-19 contagion, face-to-face visits may be implemented with televisits. Management of relapses and DMTs schedule should be adapted based on the specific benefit/risk ratio for each patient, considering disease activity, disability, comorbidities. Young adults have the highest rates of substance use of any age group. Although men historically have higher rates of substance use disorders (SUDs) than women, research shows this gender gap is narrowing. Young adults with comorbid psychiatric disorders are at increased risk for developing a SUD. Co-occurring psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, eating and post-traumatic stress disorders are more prevalent in women than men with SUDs, yet mental health treatment often does not adequately address substance use in patients receiving care for a comorbid psychiatric disorder. Tailored gender-responsive interventions for women with psychiatric disorders and co-occurring SUD have gained empirical support. Digital interventions tailored to young adult women with co-occurring disorders have the potential to overcome barriers to addressing substance use for young adult women in a psychiatric treatment setting. This study utilized a user-centered design process to better understand how technology could be used to address substance use in young adult women receiving inpatient and residential psychiatric care. Methods: Women (N = 15; age 18–25 years), recruited from five psychiatric treatment programs, engaged in a qualitative interview and completed self-report surveys on technology use and acceptability. Qualitative interviews were coded for salient themes. Results: Results showed that few participants were currently using mental health web-based applications (i.e., "apps"), but most participants expressed an interest in using apps as part of their mental health treatment. Participants identified several important topics salient to women their age including substance use and sexual assault, stigma and shame, difficulties abstaining from substance use while maintaining social relationships with peers, and negative emotions as a trigger for use. Conclusions: These data provide preliminary evidence that a digital intervention may be a feasible way to address co-occurring substance use problems in young adult women receiving care in a psychiatric setting. Involuntary psychiatric hospitalisation in Italy raises some critical forensic issues. We analysed the sociodemographic, psychopathological, and behavioural characteristics of involuntarily hospitalised psychiatric patients, and the effectiveness of the juridical procedure of guarantee. Case files (n = 2796) related to involuntary psychiatric hospitalisation (IPH) at the Office of the Tutelary Judge of the Ordinary Court of Rome (Italy) between January 2013 and May 2016 were analysed. For each case file sociodemographic, clinical and procedural information were collected. The sample included 53.7% men, patients had a mean age of 41.8 ± 13.9. Most of the IPH proposal certificates reported more than one reason, among which the most frequent were symptoms referring to a psychotic dimension (54.8%), agitation (38.0%), and symptoms of bipolar and related disorders (26.3%) Female patients showed a higher prevalence of symptoms of the bipolar spectrum (F = 29.7%, M = 23.3%; p < 0.05), while male patients showed a higher prevalence of aggressive behaviour (F = 7.7%, M = 12.6%; p < 0.01). Over 85% of the IPH proposal certificates did not explicitly mention issues related to adherence to care, which is the second criterium requested for IH (treatment refusal) and up to 7.3% of the proposals were not properly motivated. However, only 0.8% cases were not validated by the Tutelary Judge. Possible issues in the IPH procedures emerged since a significant number of certifications showed poor concordance with law- criteria for involuntary psychiatric hospitalisation. Despite this evidence, the low rate of unvalidated procedures by the Tutelary Judge, suggests a possible limitation of this form of guarantee. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This pilot study investigated the effectiveness of brief EMDR intervention as compared to treatment-as-usual (TAU) in women with post-partum PTSD symptoms. Design: A pilot randomised controlled trial was conducted to evaluate possible differences between one EMDR session (n = 19) and one TAU session (n = 18) delivered in a maternity ward in the aftermath of childbirth. Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcome measure was the rate of remission of post-partum post-traumatic stress symptoms (i.e. IES-R score <23) in both groups at 6-weeks (T1) and 12-weeks' post-partum (T2). Secondary outcome measures were mother-to-infant bonding, post-partum depressive symptoms, the presence of flashbacks and level of distress. Results: Most of the women improved their post-partum post-traumatic stress symptoms after only one treatment session. EMDR resulted more effective than TAU in reducing the proportion of women with post-partum post-traumatic stress symptoms at 6-weeks' post-partum (78.9% EMDR vs. 39.9% TAU; p =.020). Moreover, women treated with EMDR experienced less flashbacks and distress as compared to TAU. No significant difference was found between treatments on mother-to-infant bonding and post-partum depressive symptoms. Conclusions: These findings, although preliminary, suggest that a brief EMDR intervention could be a viable and promising tool in the early treatment of post-traumatic stress related to traumatic childbirth. This study investigated the use of the Formal Elements Art Therapy Scale (FEATS) with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients. Eighty-eight persons with either relapsing-remitting or progressive type MS drew a Person Picking an Apple from a Tree, and completed a Beck Depression Inventory-Fast Screen (BDI-FS). FEATS scores were compared to BDI-FS scores and across disease type. Statistically significant results were found when comparing FEATS scores in regard to disease type, with overall FEATS scores (p =.014), indicating graphic elements linked to depression present in the drawings of patients with progressive type MS. The relationship between FEATS scores and the BDI-FS was not significant. Further research is needed, as this was the first study of the FEATS with the MS population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study attempted to investigate the association among Type D, medication adherence and peritonitis in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients. Type D personality was assessed by the Chinese 14-item Type D Personality Scale (DS14) in CAPD patients. Patients' medication adherence was assessed by the Medication Adherence Report Scale, retrospectively. Of the 385 CAPD patients who were investigated, 137 (35.6%) patients had a Type D personality. The medication adherence was significantly poorer in the Type Ds compared with that of the non-Type Ds (21.5 ± 2.8 vs. 22.5 ± 2.5 score, p = 0.002). Using multiple linear regression analysis, we found that Type D personality was independently associated with medication adherence (β = 0.56, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the overall peritonitis-free survival rate of non-Type Ds was significantly higher than that of Type Ds (X2 = 4.41, p = 0.025). Using Cox regression, Type D personality (HR 1.67; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.07–2.59; p = 0.022) and adherence to bag exchange procedure (HR 1.54; 95% CI 1.11–2.14; p = 0.009) predicted the development of the first peritonitis, even after adjustment for confounders. When shift nurses change shifts, it is likely to affect the cortisol patterns of their bodies and sleep quality. The objectives of this study was to verify the influence of monthly rotating day, evening and night shifts on the sleep quality of female nurses and determine whether the cortisol awakening response (CAR) mediates this relationship. A total of 132 female shift nurses were recruited, and ultimately 128 complete questionnaires and samples were obtained (subject loss rate = 3.0%) from 45 day-shift nurses, 44 evening-shift nurses and 39 night-shift nurses at a teaching hospital in Northern Taiwan. The Pittsburgh sleep quality index served as the research instrument that nurses used to collect saliva samples at home every day after waking and 30 min after waking so as to calculate the net increases in cortisol levels (CARi). Hierarchical multiple regression was employed to examine the influence of shift type on the sleep quality of the female nurses and the mediating effect of CARi. The results of this study indicate that shift type significantly influenced CARi (F = 19.66, p < 0.001) and that the regression coefficients of evening versus day shifts and night versus day shifts are both negative. Shift type also significantly influenced sleep quality (F = 15.13, p < 0.001), and the regression coefficients of evening versus day shifts and night versus day shifts are both positive. After controlling for the influence of shift type, CARi remained significantly correlated with sleep quality (ΔF = 5.17, p = 0.025). The results show that female evening-shift or night-shift nurses display significantly lower CARi and experience significantly poorer sleep quality than day-shift nurses. A greater CARi in the female shift nurses represents better sleep quality. Furthermore, the results prove that CARi is a mediating variable influencing the sleep quality of female shiftwork nurses. The Trail Making Test (TMT) and written version of the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) assess attention, processing speed, and executive functions but their utility is limited in populations with upper limb dysfunction. Oral versions of the TMT and SDMT exist, but a systematic review of their psychometric properties and clinical utility has not been conducted, which was the goal of this study. Searches were conducted in PubMed and PsycINFO, test manuals, and the reference lists of included articles. Four measures were identified: the SDMT-oral, oral TMT-A, oral TMT-B, and the Mental Alternation Test (MAT). Two investigators independently reviewed abstracts to identify peer-reviewed articles that reported on these measures in adult populations. From each article, one investigator extracted information on reliability, validity, responsiveness, minimum detectable change, normative data, and demographic influences. A second investigator verified the accuracy of the data in a random selection of 10% of papers. The quality of the evidence for each psychometric property was rated on a 4-point scale (unknown, poor, adequate, excellent). Results showed excellent evidence for the SDMT-oral, adequate evidence for the oral TMT-B and MAT, and adequate to poor evidence for the oral TMT-A. Research regarding the influence of race on outcomes after trauma has been mixed, and we aimed to identify potential moderators of the relation between race and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)–related outcomes. We conducted a secondary analysis of data from 477 participants in the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys. African American individuals reported a shorter duration of and less frequent PTSD symptoms than Caucasian individuals, and also endorsed a greater number of reexperiencing and avoidance symptoms. Education, socioeconomic status, and social support did not significantly moderate relations between age of worst trauma and PTSD-related outcomes. Clinical and research implications are discussed. The previous studies reported Type D was associated with poor quality of life (QoL), increased psychological distress, and impaired health status in cardiac patients. The aim of this study is to assess the relationships among Type D personality, illness perception, social support, and investigate the impact of Type D personality on QoL in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients. Type D personality was assessed by the Chinese 14-item Type D Personality Scale (DS14). Illness perceptions were assessed using the Chinese version of the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ). Social support status was assessed by the well-validated social support rating scale (SSRS). Patients’ QoL was assessed by using Medical Outcomes Short Form 36 (SF-36), respectively. The Type Ds had significantly lower objective support score (8.18 ± 2.56 vs. 9.67 ± 3.28,p = 0.0001), subjective support score (6.71 ± 2.0 vs. 7.62 ± 1.93,p = 0.0001) and utilization of social support score (6.76 ± 2.0 vs. 7.61 ± 1.94,p = 0.0001) than that of the non-type Ds. Type Ds believed their illness had much more serious consequences (7.67 ± 2.64 vs. 6.27 ± 3.45,p < 0.001), and experience much more symptoms that they attributed to their illness (6.65 ± 2.54 vs. 7.31 ± 2.36,p = 0.023). Significant differences were found between Type Ds and non-Type Ds in PCS (40.53 ± 6.42 vs. 48.54 ± 6.21p < 0.001) and MCS (41.7 1 ± 10.20 vs. 46.35 ± 9.31,p = 0.012). The correlation analysis demonstrated that Type D was negatively associated with physical component score (PCS) (r = –0.29,p < 0.01), mental component score (MCS) (r = –0.31,p < 0.01), and social support (r = –0.24,p < 0.001). Using multiple linear regression analysis, we found that Type D personality was independently associated with PCS (β = –0.32,p < 0.001) and MCS (β = –0.24,p < 0.001). Type D personality was a predictor of poor QoL in CAPD patients. The current study is the first to identify a strong association among Type D, illness perceptions, social support and QoL in CAPD patients.
