The Tigris River in Baghdad is a large sand-bed river, supply-limited because of the implementation of a water flow regulation scheme comprising a series of reservoirs and barrages. The significant reduction in the water discharge has affected the hydraulic performance of the river and turned it into an under-fit river of complicated morphology where many islands and bank deposits have been showed up across an 18 km reach in addition to the essential sinuosity. Measuring sediment load at individual cross-sections in the river gives misleading estimates and the corresponding sediment rating curve has a locally limited using. A spatially sediment rating by investigating sediment loads over the complicated reach is required to overcome the local limitations. Sediment transport rates have been investigated at 16 cross-sections along the study reach by collecting suspended load, bed load and bed material samples. Velocity profiles were measured at the sampling stations using an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The measurement results indicated that the suspended load is the dominant mode of transport (93.5%). However, bedloads were considered in determining the total loads. A spatial total load rating curve in the form of a power function was established and examined against the sediment measurements. Twenty-two previously published total load formulae where applied at the same sections and of these the Colby1964 formula gave the closest fit to the measured loads. Based on the results from this study a recommended procedure is established for using a spatial total load rating curve to estimate sediment transport rates for similar morphologically complicated rivers. Mosul Dam is one of the biggest hydraulic structures in Iraq. Its storage capacity is 11.11 × 109m3at a maximum operation level of 330 m a.s.l. The dam became operational in 1986 and no survey has been conducted to determine its storage capacity and establish new operational curves since this date. A topographic map of scale 1:50 000 dated 1983 was converted into triangulated irregular network (TIN) format using the ArcGIS program to evaluate the operational curves. Then the reservoir was surveyed in 2011 to establish the reduction in its storage capacity and to develop new operational curves. The results indicated that the reduction in the storage capacity of the reservoir was 14.73%. This implies that the rate of sedimentation within the reservoir was 45.72 × 106m3year−1. These results indicate that most of the sediment was deposited within the upper zone of the reservoir where the River Tigris enters the reservoir. EditorD. This work aims to evaluate water scarcity in Thi-Qar governorate, Iraq, based on GIS estimation, environmental data, climate-change effects, and detection of the changes in marshes over the last three decades (1991–2021). The methodology process included collecting and analysing the related data sets such as water quality indicators, surface water quantity, climatic data, and Landsat’s images. GIS-based data and spatial data were acquired from the USGS website. Arc GIS 10.4.1 software was used to create a hydrological analysis. The results showed that generally, in Iraq, the annual volume of water available per person is 1,390.95 m³/cap/year, which is lower than the threshold for water scarcity (1700 m³/cap/year). The average daily potable water per person in Thi-Qar governorate was 284 L/cap/day, lower than the general average daily potable water per person of Iraq (340 L/cap/day). Meanwhile, 6% of the months along 1998–2018 did not meet the water demands. Water quality tests exhibited some high amounts of pollutants in drinking water, e.g., biological pollution was recorded in 55% of the total number of annual samples. Landsat’s images illustrated a high variation in water areas of marshes over the selected period, whereas the highest marshes area was 1548.21 km² in 1991 compared to the lowest area, 65.45 km² found in 1999. To sum up, the research outcomes revealed that the study area faced a serious water scarcity, which had a negative impact on the local people. Ensuring accurate estimation of evaporation is weighty for effective planning and judicious management of available water resources for agricultural practices. Thus, this work enhances the potential of support vector regression (SVR) optimized with a novel nature-inspired algorithm, namely, Slap Swarm Algorithm (SVR-SSA) against Whale Optimization Algorithm (SVR-WOA), Multi-Verse Optimizer (SVR-MVO), Spotted Hyena Optimizer (SVR-SHO), Particle Swarm Optimization (SVR-PSO), and Penman model (PM). Daily EP (pan-evaporation) was estimated in two different agro-climatic zones (ACZ) in northern India. The optimal combination of input parameters was extracted by applying the Gamma test (GT). The outcomes of the hybrid of SVR and PM models were equated with recorded daily EP observations based on goodness-of-fit measures along with graphical scrutiny. The results of the appraisal showed that the novel hybrid SVR-SSA-5 model performed superior (MAE = 0.697, 1.556, 0.858 mm/day; RMSE = 1.116, 2.114, 1.202 mm/day; IOS = 0.250, 0.350, 0.303; NSE = 0.0.861, 0.750, 0.834; PCC = 0.929, 0.868, 0.918; IOA = 0.960, 0.925, 0.956) than other models in testing phase at Hisar, Bathinda, and Ludhiana stations, respectively. Recent technological advances have made it possible to produce particles with nanometer dimensions that are uniformly and steadily suspended in traditional solar liquids and have enhanced the impact of thermo-physical parameters. In this research, a three-dimensional flat plate solar collector was built using a thin flat plate and a single working fluid pipe. The physical model was solved computationally under conditions of conjugated laminar forced convection in the range 500 ≤ Re ≤ 1900 and a heat flux of 1000W/m². Distilled water (DW) and different types of hybrid nanofluids (namely, 0.1%-Al2O3@Cu/DW, 0.1%-MWCNTs@Fe3O4/DW, 0.3%-MWCNTs@Fe3O4/DW, 0.5%-Ag@MgO/DW, 1%-Ag@MgO/DW, 1%-S1 and 1%-S2, where MWCNTs are multi-wall carbon nanotubes, S1 means 2CuO--1Cu and S2 means 1CuO--2Cu nanocomposites) were evaluated via a set of parameters. The numerical results revealed that, by increasing the working fluid velocity (the Reynolds number), the average heat transfer coefficient, pressure loss, heat gain and solar collector efficiency were increased. Meanwhile, outlet fluid temperature and flat plate surface temperature were decreased. At Re = 1900, 1%-S2 and 1%-S1 presented higher thermal performance enhancement by 44.28% and 36.72% relative to DW. The flat-plate solar collector (FPSC) three-dimensional (3D) model was used to numerically evaluate the energy and economic estimates. A laminar flow with 500 ≤ Re ≤ 1900, an inlet temperature of 293 K, and a solar flux of 1000W/m² were assumed the operating conditions. Two mono nanofluids, CuO-DW and Cu-DW, were tested with different shapes (Spherical, Cylindrical, Platelets, and Blades) and different volume fractions. Additionally, hybrid nanocomposites from CuO@Cu/DW with different shapes (Spherical, Cylindrical, Platelets and Blades), different mixing ratios (60%+40%, 50%+50% and 40%+60%) and different volume fractions (1 volume%, 2 volume%, 3 volume% and 4 volume%) were compared with mono nanofluids. At 1 volume% and Re = 1900, CuO-Platelets demonstrated the highest pressure drop (33.312 Pa). CuO-Platelets achieved the higher thermal enhancement with (8.761%) at 1 vol.% and Re = 1900. CuO-Platelets reduced the size of the solar collector by 25.60%. Meanwhile, CuO@Cu-Spherical (40:60) needed a larger collector size with 16.69% at 4 vol.% and Re = 1900. CuO-Platelets with 967.61, CuO -- Cylindrical with 976.76, Cu Platelets with 983.84, and Cu-Cylindrical with 992.92 presented the lowest total cost. Saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) is an important soil characteristic that controls water moves through the soil. On the other hand, its measurement is difficult, time-consuming, and expensive; hence Pedotransfer Functions (PTFs) are commonly used for its estimation. Despite significant development over the years, the PTFs showed poor performance in predicting Ks. Using Genetic Algorithm (GA), two hybrid Machine Learning based PTFs (ML-PTF), i.e. a combination of GA with Multilayer Perceptron (MLP-GA) and Support Vector Machine (SVM-GA), were proposed in this study. We compared the performances of four machine learning algorithms for different sets of predictors. The predictor combination containing sand, clay, Field Capacity, and Wilting Point showed the highest accuracy for all the ML-PTFs. Among the ML-PTFs, the SVM-GA algorithm outperformed the rest of the PTFs. It was noticed that the SVM-GA PTF demonstrated higher efficiency than the MLP-GA algorithm. The reference model for hydraulic conductivity prediction was selected as the SVM-GA PTF paired with the K-5 predictor variables. The proposed PTFs were compared with 160 models from past literature. It was found that the algorithms advocated were an improvement over these PTFs. Change is considered a prominent feature of urban areas because of the various services and functions in cities, with complex functional relations. The study aims to build an informational foundation for urban planners and designers on the effects resulting from the imbalance in the organization and proportions of urban land uses, which in turn affects the performance of its functions in the city and its changes, and thus the necessity of using modern technologies to identify and define urban problems in cities, especially those related to land uses. An analytical approach to the research was taken, adopting geographic information systems as a tool for research by studying the reality of the region and determining the changes occurring from the functional side for the periods of 2,003,200,820,132,018. These periods witnessed substantial development and changes at the city and country levels. Through the results of the study, the changes were identified, remedies suggested, positive aspects were strengthened, and negative phenomena were reduced. The conclusions reached by the study indicate that planning for the use of the land is a very important practical aspect of achieving the needs of the population and limiting the noncultural aspects of expansion. The article tried to study the public transport role as one of the means that contribute to sustainable urban development by investigating the effect of the coverage rate for public transport on the number of those who use public transport in the neighbourhoods of Kut city. This article investigates the link between public transportation and supportive urban design trends. The research spatial and tem- poral limits are represented by the municipal boundaries Al-Kut city, which are shown in the master plan of the city for the period 2008–2012. The results showed a positive but weak relationship between public transport (variable factor) and the proportion of public transport coverage and population density (independent fac- tors). These factors do not explain the apparent, which is confirmed by the high Bo value and its great reliability, and this result is inconsistent with the hypothesis that states a positive effect between public transport and the coverage rate. However, this relationship is abnormal and indicates an imbalance in the distribution of land uses and the provision of services in the structure of Kut city. Furthermore, it is a negative indicator of the city’s structure, where a good and efficient structure requires a strong relationship. The community’s well-being and economic livelihoods are heavily influenced by the water level of watersheds. The changes in water levels directly affect the circulation processes of lakes and rivers that control water mixing and bottom sediment resuspension, further affecting water quality and aquatic ecosystems. Thus, these considerations have made the water level monitoring process essential to save the environment. Machine learning hybrid models are emerging robust tools that are successfully applied for water level monitoring. Various models have been developed, and selecting the optimal model would be a lengthy procedure. A timely, detailed, and instructive overview of the models’ concepts and historical uses would be beneficial in preventing researchers from overlooking models’ potential selection and saving significant time on the problem. Thus, recent research on water level prediction using hybrid machines is reviewed in this article to present the “state of the art” on the subject and provide some suggestions on research methodologies and models. This comprehensive study classifies hybrid models into four types algorithm parameter optimisation-based hybrid models (OBH), pre-processing based hybrid models (PBH), the components combination-based hybrid models (CBH), and hybridisation of parameter optimisation-based with preprocessing-based hybrid models (HOPH); furthermore, it explains the pre-processing of data in detail. Salinity is a classic problem in water quality management since it is directly associated with low water quality indices. Debate continues about selecting the best model for water quality forecasting, it remains a major challenge and causes much uncertainty. Accordingly, identifying the optimal modelling that can capture the salinity behaviour is becoming a common trend in recent water quality research. This study applies novel combined techniques, including data pre- processing and artificial neural network (ANN) optimised with constriction coeffi- cient-based particle swarm optimisation and chaotic gravitational search algorithm (CPSOCGSA) to forecast monthly salinity data. Historical monthly total dissolved solids (TDS) and electrical conductivity (EC) data of the Euphrates River at Al- Musayyab, Babylon, and climatic factors from 2010 to 2019 were used to build and validate the methodology. Additionally, for more validation, the CPSOCGSA-ANN was compared with the slime mould algorithm (SMA-ANN), particle swarm optimisation (PSO-ANN) and multi-verse optimiser (MVO-ANN). The results reveal that the pre-processing data approaches improved data quality and selected the best predictors’ scenario. The CPSOCGSA-ANN algorithm is the best based on several statistical criteria. This study compares several advanced machine learning models to obtain the most accurate method for predicting the aeration efficiency (E20) through the Parshall flume. The required dataset is obtained from the laboratory tests using different flumes fabricated in National Institute Technology Kurukshetra, India. Besides, the potential of K Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Random Forest Regression (RFR), and Decision Tree Regression (DTR) models are evaluated to predict the aeration efficiency. In this way, several input combinations (e.g. M1-M15) are provided using the laboratory parameters (e.g. W/L, S/L, Fr, and Re). Different predictive models are obtained based on those input combinations and machine learning models proposed in the present study. The predictive models are assessed based on several performance metrics and visual indicators. Results show that the KNN-M11 model ( R M S E t e s t i n g = 0.002 , R t e s t i n g 2 = 0.929), which includes W/L, S/L, and Fr as predictive variables outperforms the other predictive models. Furthermore, an enhancement is observed in KNN model estimation accuracy compared to the previously developed empirical models. Sediment transport in the ejector is highly stochastic and non-linear in nature, and its accurate estimation is a complex and challenging mission. This study attempts to investigate the sediment removal estimation of sediment ejector using newly developed hybrid data-intelligence models. The proposed models are based on the hybridization of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS) with different metaheuristic algorithms, namely, particle swarm optimization (PSO), genetic algorithm (GA), differential evolution (DE), and ant colony optimization (ACO). The proposed models are constructed with various related input variables such as sediment concentration, flow depth, velocity, sediment size, Froude number, extraction ratio, number of tunnels and sub-tunnels, and flow depth at upstream of the sediment ejector. The estimation capacity of the developed hybrid models is assessed using several statistical evaluation indices. The modeling results obtained for the studied ejector sediment removal estimation demonstrated an optimistic finding. The water shortages facing Jordan are profound and, while the country is presently undertaking extensive reform and investment into the water sector; forecasts indicate that a significant shortfall will still exist. The problem is not only that there is not enough water but this is compounded by the high population growth rate of the country. The rate of population growth in Jordan is 3.6 percent, and with a current population of around 5 million, it is expected to reach 7 million by the year 2010. The increasing population, industrial requirements, and the need for irrigation water puts increased pressure on water industries. Added to that, the living standards have increased in Jordan during the second half of the 20th century, raising the per capita use of water. The present per capita daily water use is 85 liters, which is very small compared to the United Kingdom's average of 225 liters/day. But if living standards continue to rise at the present rate, the water consumption will also increase. Various sources of non-conventional supply have been considered to meet this shortfall and a review of current literature revealed one option to consider: water importation, which presents a justifiable mechanism for alleviating this need. This paper presents a review of the available water resources in Jordan. Then it covers the water demands within the country and where the deficit can be addressed. Most of the hydraulic structures rest on an impervious foundation to reserve water at the upstream side. The water heads difference leads to water movement from the higher to the lower head through the porous soil layer beneath the foundation, generating an uplift pressure under the structure floor. In this study, a new method is presented to estimate the uplift pressures at key points by performing sub-surface flow analysis using the Analysis SYStem (ANSYS) software. Then a statistical analysis to validate the proposed equations is conducted using the SPSS software. The case study for this research is a barrage in Kufa city-Iraq. The used data to implement this study was water levels, soil permeability, and length of imperious foundation. The obtained results show good outcomes from using the proposed method to develop uplift pressure equations. The comparison of the current study results with Khosla's equation showed good agreement where the coefficient of determination (R2) and the standard error of estimation (SEE) for the equations were between (99.9–97.8) and (0.024–0.11), respectively. This study intends to evaluate university students' awareness regarding water pollution in Iraq to show the environmental education contribution in reducing water pollution. The study was conducted in Wasit university, Wasit province, Iraq by field questionnaire survey with 388 students from the civil engineering department and engineering college. The questionnaires were divided according to the pollution causes into industrial, agricultural and sewage water pollutants. The data were analyzed utilizing the thematic analysis to assess environmental knowledge and awareness of water pollution risks. The results show that most students have high interest in environmental conservation, yet, a lack of education in general environmental education, as the educational curriculum focuses on theoretical aspects more than the practical ones. The results also show that the media role is inactive concerning environmental awareness of water pollution. Solid waste is one of the leading environmental problems affecting human lives. Selecting a landfill where waste is disposed of is a complicated issue that related to many factors and regulations. In this study, the optimal sanitary landfill site for An-Najaf city was assessed using the GIS and weight criteria method. Eight appropriate criteria were selected, which are: urban area, rivers, roads, soil types, elevation, wind, slope, and archaeological, historical and religious sites. Moreover, the weighting of the criteria by using experts' opinion and previous similar literature. The "weighted overlay tool" is then applied to get a map of the significance index for selected landfill sites. Seven suitable sites with an area of 177,762,986 m2 and form 0.62% from the total city area can accommodate the solid waste generated for a period, not less than ten years10 years. The present study modifies the sorption isotherm for simulating the influences of initial pH and temperature variations on the cadmium sorption from contaminated water using waste foundry sand based on Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models. Results proved that the Langmuir expression is able to adopt these effects by relating sorption capacity and affinity constants with pH and temperature of aqueous solution through exponential relationships (determination coefficient = 0.9375). The present model is assumed that the sorption process occurs through acidic functional groups and this is consistent with FTIR outputs. The potential of several predictive models including multiple model-artificial neural network (MM-ANN), multivariate adaptive regression spline (MARS), support vector machine (SVM), multi-gene genetic programming (MGGP), and 'M5Tree' were assessed to simulate the pan evaporation in monthly scale (EPm) at two stations (e.g. Ranichauri and Pantnagar) in India. Monthly climatological information were used for simulating the pan evaporation. The utmost effective input-variables for the MM-ANN, MGGP, MARS, SVM, and M5Tree were determined using the Gamma test (GT). The predictive models were compared to each other using several statistical criteria (e.g. mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), Willmott's Index of agreement (WI), root mean squared error (RMSE), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and Legate and McCabe's Index (LM)) and visual inspection. The results showed that the MM-ANN-1 and MGGP-1 models (NSE, WI, LM, RMSE, MAPE are 0.954, 0.988, 0.801, 0.536 mm/month, 9.988% at Pantnagar station, and 0.911, 0.975, 0.724, and 0.364 mm/month, 12.297% at Ranichauri station, respectively) with input variables equal to six were more successful than the other techniques during testing period to simulate the monthly pan evaporation at both Ranichauri and Pantnagar stations. The possible changes in precipitation of Syrian due to climate change are projected in this study. The symmetrical uncertainty (SU) and multi-criteria decision-analysis (MCDA) methods are used to identify the best general circulation models (GCMs) for precipitation projections. The effectiveness of four bias correction methods, linear scaling (LS), power transformation (PT), general quantile mapping (GEQM), and gamma quantile mapping (GAQM) is assessed in downscaling GCM simulated precipitation. A random forest (RF) model is performed to generate the multi model ensemble (MME) of precipitation projections for four representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 2.6, 4.5, 6.0, and 8.5. The results showed that the best suited GCMs for climate projection of Syria are HadGEM2-AO, CSIRO-Mk3-6-0, NorESM1-M, and CESM1-CAM5. The LS demonstrated the highest capability for precipitation downscaling. Annual changes in precipitation is projected to decrease by −30 to −85.2% for RCPs 4.5, 6.0, and 8.5, while by < 0.0 to −30% for RCP 2.6. The precipitation is projected to decrease in the entire country for RCP 6.0, while increase in some parts for other RCPs during wet season. Evaporation, one of the fundamental components of the hydrology cycle, is differently influenced by various meteorological variables in different climatic regions. The accurate prediction of evaporation is essential for multiple water resources engineering applications, particularly in developing countries like Iraq where the meteorological stations are not sustained and operated appropriately for in situ estimations. This is where advanced methodologies such as machine learning (ML) models can make valuable contributions. In this research, evaporation is predicted at two different meteorological stations located in arid and semi-arid regions of Iraq. Four different ML models for the prediction of evaporation – the classification and regression tree (CART), the cascade correlation neural network (CCNNs), gene expression programming (GEP), and the support vector machine (SVM) – were developed and constructed using various input combinations of meteorological variables. The results reveal that the best predictions are achieved by incorporating sunshine hours, wind speed, relative humidity, rainfall, and the minimum, mean, and maximum temperatures. The SVM was found to show the best performance with wind speed, rainfall, and relative humidity as inputs at Station I (R2 =.92), and with all variables as inputs at Station II (R2 =.97). A total of 73 soil samples were initially analyzed for lead (Pb) concentration as an indicator of the environment impact of smelter activity in the Port Pirie, South Australia. Chemometric techniques were used to assess the ability of near-infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy to predict soil Pb using spectrally active soil characteristics such as soil carbon (C). The result indicated a strong linear relationship between log-transformed data of soil Pb and spectral reflectance in the range between 500 and 612 nm with R2 = 0.54 and a low root-mean-square error (RMSEv = 0.38) for the validation mode with an acceptable ratio of performance to deviation and ratio of error range (1.6 and 7.7, respectively). This study suggested that NIR spectroscopy based on auxiliary spectrally active components is a rapid and noninvasive assessment technique and has the ability to determine Pb contamination in urban soil to be useful in environmental health risk assessment.
