The ability of architects to adapt to diverse identities and effectively manage the paradoxical challenges posed by digital transformation is critical to their role as innovative leaders in the dynamic digital construction landscape. However, existing research has yet to fully explore the complex experiences of paradoxical leadership and identity adaptation among architects in this context. Addressing this gap, the study aims to explore the types of conflicting identities and paradoxical leadership behaviour experienced by architects in response to the paradoxical challenges inherent to this phenomenon. Employing an interpretive phenomenological approach, the study engaged ten individuals practicing in architectural consultancy practices (ACPs) settings in Malaysia for in-depth, semi-structured interviews and a written account exercise to uncover their experiences. Thematic structural analysis yielded five key themes: "designer and technologist," "technical-oriented and social-oriented individuals," "collaborator and independent thinker," "expert and lifelong learner," and "reductionist and holistic thinking." This comprehensive research strategy offers a more in-depth understanding of architects' experiences and provides novel insights for enhancing leadership and identity development. Additionally, the newly developed paradoxical leadership and identity-based framework can serve as a platform for practitioners to nurture future-ready architects, upskill and reskill the existing workforce, and potentially reduce the industry's reliance on foreign talent. Project boundaries force architects to work with resources that are insufficient to meet all possible interests, raising questions of distributive justice. In settler colonial contexts, these mingle with questions of restorative justice, prompted by demands to repatriate Indigenous land and life. To foreground how questions of justice arise and are engaged with in contemporary architectural practice, I explore recent work by LMN Architects, an interdisciplinary studio active in complex scenarios with many different interests. LMN is based in Seattle, an area Native Americans inhabited long before the first European settlers. Focusing on two projects in the area – the Mukilteo Multimodal Ferry Terminal and the Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion – I analyse how LMN seeks ways to involve the Coast Salish tribal communities: from programming and design; over siting, spatial organisation, and integration of public art; to material selection, sourcing, and beyond. This analysis allows understanding the studio's attempts at 'giving back' in relation to their ambition to leverage a project's opportunities beyond the boundaries of its site. Throughout their work, LMN adopts expansive notions of who is affected – by extending whose interests to meet – and what resources to distribute – by reconsidering who is invited to contribute and how invitees may benefit from that contribution. Housing research was introduced in Portugal during the 1960s, at the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil, LNEC), as a prominent scientific area in the international post-war conjuncture. The contributions of the LNEC's research work guided architectural practice and political decisions following the aftermath of the Portuguese dictatorship in 1974. Based on primary sources, including documentation found at the LNEC library and archives, but also on the qualitative analysis of several interviews/oral statements conducted between 2017 and 2019 with the LNEC's former researchers, this paper discloses how the LNEC's legacy on housing research supported the establishment of the Portuguese housing programme in the 1970s, with effects in current times, both on a scientific level as well as for policy guidance. A growing majority of people living in Residential Care Facilities (RCFs) for older people have dementia. Yet the implementation of evidence-based Dementia Design Principles (DDPs), known to reduce symptoms and improve wellbeing, remains limited. This paper reports on the development and application of Plan-EAT, a floorplan-based method of assessing dementia design quality in RCFs. Through the analysis of 34 published architectural exemplars, the method identifies strengths and weaknesses in the layouts of residential care buildings, across 39 assessment criteria organized under 9 DDPs. The paper concludes that the Plan-EAT could benefit architectural practice by providing an evidence-based means of assessing layout planning quality, in both existing cases and emerging RCF design proposals. According to the theory of practice architecture, every practice enacted in classrooms is a result of interaction between social, physical and spatial elements. In relation, from a practice-referenced perspective, it is necessary to know which teaching-learning implementation features could help teachers/coaches/researchers to assemble Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) interventions in relation to the institutional environment. Purpose: This review aimed to explore from a practice-referenced perspective how TGfU researchers reported their interventions based on the teaching-learning implementation features (intervention design as a function of the context, intervention length, lesson content, basic lesson elements, lesson alignment, teacher/coach experience with the approach, and lesson validation and treatment verification) and their association with learners' outcomes. Results: We found 20 studies that included some of the teaching-learning implementation features, but none of the studies included all of these features. We also found that studies of TGfU measured and reported learners' outcomes in a variety of ways. This creates difficulties for drawing conclusions about the relationships between the presence of teaching-learning implementation features and student learning outcomes. Conclusion: Further TGfU interventions should be planned to consider the following: (a) that lessons need to be designed as a function of the context; (b) the number of intervention lessons, their duration and the duration of each lesson task; (c) the concrete tactical and technique contents and goals per lesson; (d) the modified games, questions and achievable challenges as basic lesson elements; (e) the alignment between the basic lesson elements and the structure of lessons, based on the goals of each lesson; (f) that teachers/coaches need to have previous experience in TGfU and be trained on the specific study purpose; (g) that lessons should be validated before implementation and verified during intervention; (h) researchers should regulate the ways in which learners' outcomes are measured and reported within TGfU studies. In recent years there has been increased focus on supporting the safety and wellbeing of children and young people with disability. This paper reports on a study that asked children and young people with disability and adults who work with them about practices that support their wellbeing and safety, including barriers and enablers to ethical practice. We used the theory of practice architectures to unpack the practices. Findings point to a range of practices that both young people and adults regarded as important in creating the cultural conditions for young people to feel happy, safe and well, albeit placing different emphases on particular practices. Several tensions within and between these practices and the evolving requirements of disability and safeguarding policy environments were also apparent. While often not well articulated, the inherent tensions have implications when considering what children and young people need, particularly those with higher support needs. Findings suggest closer attention needs to be given to the intersection between individual and systemic factors in shaping ethical practice aimed at supporting the wellbeing and safety of children and young people with disability. Inspired by growing calls for the equitable recognition of other experiences—especially non-white and non-western—in the historiography of the modern era, this paper explores the themes of transnational architectural practice and cosmopolitanism through the lens of cultural heritage—specifically modern heritage—and how values are ascribed, invariably asymmetrically, to the tangible and intangible legacies of our recent past. In deference to the theme of Cosmopolitanism's Others, the paper argues for equitable histories not merely as an intellectual exercise, but as a prerequisite to attaining just and sustainable futures. One small step in this direction is the formulation of The Cape Town Document on Modern Heritage (2022) under the auspices of the global collaborative, MoHoA (Modern Heritage of Africa/Modern Heritage in the Anthropocene), a decentring and restitutive framework for an equitable and sustainable approach to the theory and practice of modern heritage in a planetary age. This study examines video games' depictions of archival architectures in levels and practices of interacting with archival material such as looting. By doing this, the article proposes a processual idea of proper archives and virtual counterparts, both determined by various moments of interplay, such as opening treasure chests, boxes, or cells. Archived artifacts, hidden in games to be discovered, lure players to begin interplay, and are a crucial part of the labyrinthic archival ecosystem. Examining video game archives enhances the perception of archival ecosystems from the interplay with institutional archives, and the archived material in general. The relation of law and art is conventionally understood through a disciplinary divide that presents art as an instrument of legal practice and scholarship or, alternatively, presents law as potential context for artistic engagement. Moving beyond disciplinary definitions, in this article we explore how art and law, as modes of ordering and action in the world, often overlap in their respective desires to engage existing material orders. Whereas law's claim of producing order appears self-evident, we try to highlight, through a concept of legislative arts, the often-overlooked similar function of artistic practices. At the heart of what we refer to as legislative arts are practices that aim to challenge law's claim of authority in ordering social life through tactical combinations of elements of art and law. In examining a set of examples that include the Tamms Year Ten campaign to close a super-max prison in the United States, the work of Forensic Architecture and practices of passport forgery, we aim to highlight the possibility of manifesting social orders beyond an exclusive reliance upon state laws. Pointing to the potentials of such legislative arts practices, this article suggests that the material ordering quality of artistic and legal practices can, and perhaps should, be weaponized for challenging and remaking the world of unjust state laws. In order to succeed in today's disruptive world, architects have to constantly reevaluate their strategies and innovate. Consequently, some architectural offices have started to implement parametric modeling tools to support their ideation work. Architectural studies consider how such technologies impact the design process, cognitive processes or generation of representations. This paper looks at the impact of this approach from another angle, which relates to the organization; it focuses on parametric modeling adoption and on how parametric modeling tools and organizational aspects of small offices impact each other. While parametric modeling is announced to be widely adapted, we give an overview of parametric practices in small and medium Belgian architectural offices, which represent the largest part of the market but are generally left aside in studies. This paper divides into four categories the main barriers and enablers architectural small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are confronted with, when adopting parametric modeling. These lead to a system of constraints in which the architectural practice evolves. The research observes the management of parametric workflows in SMEs and situates the parametric modeling tool within the theoretical framework of organizations. During the last decades, the increasing need to ensure building performance during architectural design has led to highly interactive relations between architecture and various other disciplines, in which concepts of sustainability and building performance are tightly integrated into the design process. However, the adoption of these concepts in architectural practices and the recent advancements in the field have remained rather slow. This research aims to understand performative design (PD) in the context of existing design practices and investigate integrated design strategies and potentials of computational design throughout the whole design process. In this research, a qualitative study was carried out, focusing on PD processes in architectural practices based on semi-structured interviews and case studies. The collected data from nine selected architectural practices is analyzed through a thematic coding approach. The findings reveal that the widespread use of computational tools and technologies and the increasing awareness of both architects and clients on building performance have changed the design priorities in architectural practices. The results also show that the competence of the design team, the tools used during design processes, the involvement of direct and indirect stakeholders, shifting client demands, and market values are effective in pursuing an integrated PD process. Consequently, this research contributes to the current understanding of performative architectural design practices by investigating the key performance concepts, supporting computational tools, and finally the current practices of PD. This essay discusses the designed nature of ableism and calls for architecture to learn from disability in order to illuminate new paradigms of practice. It explores the architectures of the countercollapse as a challenge to the spatial and political regimes of austerity that shatter the networks of support on which life depends. As an alternative, these architectures make assistance both visible and valuable and enhance interdependence as central to worldly coexistence. They do not seek to legitimize architecture as a lone profession responsible for rehabilitating the disabled body or repairing a broken world but rather promote engaged, networked, and assisted practices, just as disability itself. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, architecture was regularly celebrated as "the mother of the arts." Though most users of the phrase rarely explicated its nuances, a close reading of the contexts and debates in which it was invoked reveals the complexity, nuance, and changing implications of the deceptively simple claim. In a period when the fine and applied arts grew increasingly distinct and the practice of architecture was progressively codified and professionalized, why did architects engage in rhetoric that emphasized architecture's affiliation with and authority over the arts? To answer this question, I examine numerous instantiations of the phrase to trace an arc in which an earlier disciplinary affiliation between architecture and the fine arts transforms into an interpersonal relationship between architects and art-workers. In so doing, I suggest that the maternal metaphor was employed in response to collectively held anxieties to invert and project them as conceptual and historical claims of affiliation, authority, and identity—precisely those characteristics of the profession that were unstable at the time. Architecture, media, and the spatial practices of tourists relate to one another in complex ways. Images of buildings feature in place promotion strategies, and these representations are replicated in tourists' own photographs from their visits. The social practices of people have spatial implications as places develop to allow for opportunities for the performance of practices associated with tourism, including photography. By tracing visual representations of four buildings in the regional mining-cum-tourist town of Beaconsfield, Tasmania, through a cross-section of media, we show how media-oriented practices intersect with architecture and tourism in a regional place. Beaconsfield's historic buildings are mediated and shared by individuals and institutions online as well as in the form of physical objects used as keepsakes and gifts. They are also re-created in situ in the façades of nearby buildings, public artwork, and urban media. By interpreting this socio-spatial phenomenon through a practice-theory lens we theorise the mediatisation of architecture in a peripheral place showing that this process has both social and spatial implications. In this invited commentary for the special issue on 'How built spaces influence practices of educators' work: An examination through practice lens,' I discuss how insights from the theory of practice architecture and the theory of practice ontology are helpful in exploring the complexities of educational practices, particularly with reference to the locations within and through which such practices take place. By focusing on the doings, sayings and relatings that take place in such practices and on their material conditions, the contributions add much nuance and detail to the understanding of educational practices, particularly when such practices are 'in transition' due to forces that are often beyond the influence of the actors in such practices themselves. The main critical point I make concerns the sayings utilised by the authors themselves. I suggest that references to 'learning' are problematic in the study of educational practices. I single out the idea of seeing schools, colleges and universities as 'learning environments.' I provide reasons why this way of engaging with educational practices is problematic – both from a research perspective and from a practice and policy perspective – and suggest that the better designation would be that of seeing them as educational practices. In this article, we unravel the production network of a large acoustic wall in a newly built theatre in Rotterdam. This project can be seen as a deviant case in the sense that it goes against the grain of the often observed long-term trend of erosion of the role of architects. This erosion signifies not just a loss for this specific group of professionals, but – given the omnipresence of the built environment in everyday life – also entails risks for society at large. We depart from the Global Network Approach, which can be considered as a heuristic tool to analyse complex production networks, spread out over several interdependent actors and locations. By focusing on the production process, we open up the black box of design in a creative industry based on in-depth interviews with the key players of the production network of the wall. We argue that the prominent role of the architectural practice involved is based on (1) their 'digital workflow' strategy; and (2) the specific network structure and relations which allowed them to be important in both design and realisation of the wall. During the last decades, the sustainable redesign of existing buildings has been gaining importance in both architectural practice and education. While based on the knowledge of the basic principles of bioclimatic design, it also requires a quantitative evaluation of the buildings' energy performance. This article aims at presenting the set-up, methodology and results of an undergraduate architectural technology course, which attempts to educate students on assessing the thermal characteristics and bioclimatic performance of existing buildings, proposing low-tech and low-cost interventions, and quantitatively evaluating their effect using energy simulation software. The applied strategies include thermal insulation, shading combined with natural ventilation for the summer period and their effect on the improvement of diurnal, inter-seasonal and annual thermal performance is evaluated. The results involve the assessment of the course set-up, the evolution during the five-year period that it has been taught, the teaching outcome, as well as the future progress and possible alterations. Immersive technologies are not only gaining popularity in various fields but are also heralded as the obvious next step in architectural practice. Now that almost five years have passed since the release of more accurate and affordable headsets, a review focusing on immersive technology applications in the architectural field is needed to reflect the current fields investigated. This systematic literature review discusses the sample used in the 201 selected studies about immersive technologies published from 2015 to 2019. The study identifies gaps in the current literature. The results highlight that professional architects are almost never queried in searches conducted over the past five years in the selected database. It unveils the necessity to take into consideration the context of studies in order to develop tools truly dedicated to the real practices of professional architects. The appearance of the built environment is an important matter for most people, as it can affect their physical, financial and psychological wellbeing. Many studies have been conducted to understand people's visual preferences for buildings and streetscapes and the majority have used photographic or video representations to stimulate responses. Few have asked people for their preferences as they walk along the street. This research addresses that gap in knowledge, utilising a mixed methods research methodology. People were invited to indicate their preferences while walking along three streets in New Zealand cities. The survey responses were supplemented by two focus group discussions. This research found that people prefer streetscapes where differences in height and architectural composition vary within a narrow band of difference along the length of the street. At the scale of the individual building façade, people were found to prefer traditional cladding materials such as brick and those that could be painted or refinished. Compositionally, people preferred buildings with discrete window openings, a finding that was strongly supported by a dislike for horizontally banded façade treatments. This contribution synthesizes the results of the Kutaisi Archaeological Landscape Project (KALP), focusing on the analysis of the development of settlement patterns in the Colchis lowlands during the 2nd and 1st millennia b.c. The targeted excavations carried out within the urban center of Kutaisi provide new information regarding earthen architectural practices, raw material procurement, and defensive structures that characterized the area in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages. The three sites identified within the Kutaisi urban area, Gabashvili, Dateshidze, and Bagrati, are analyzed in detail to provide fresh insights on settlement structure and typology. They also present distinctive vernacular architectural traditions that make the role of Kutaisi in the region essential to understanding Late Bronze/Early Iron Age building practices, their continuity over time, and their environmental sustainability. In the context of the global financial crisis, remittances have become linked to the global financial inclusion agenda in a phenomenon called the 'financialization of remittances' (FOR). This article conceptualizes the FOR as a dispositif to analyze how heterogeneous ways of linking remittances to finance form an ensemble that governs things and people and legitimizes particular policy interventions. We combine the concept of the dispositif with insights from the literature on emotions to analyze how the FOR governs through an emotional regime to constitute particular objects and subjects—such as the 'remittance market' and the 'remittance family'. Through this emotional regime, the FOR establishes particular narratives regarding migration, remittances, and transnational families to embed remittances in the global financial architecture; and normalizes practices of turning transnational families into financial customers and entrepreneurs, and entrenching financial logics into their lives. Yet, emotions are also mobilized to subvert and resist the FOR and its emotional regime. More broadly, our analysis suggests that analyzing emotional governance is crucial to better understand financialization processes and expose their (fragile) nature and limits. Australian universities have a remit to produce work-ready graduates and engage students from equity groups. In engineering education, accredited Australian programs commonly respond to Engineers Australia's required engagement with professional practice by mandating completion of a specified number of hours in work-integrated learning (WIL) placements as a graduation requirement. Placements are frequently self-sourced, under/unpaid, full-time and available at set times. These conditions, largely beyond students' control, limit options for students supporting themselves through paid work and for students with family commitments. In an investigation framed by the theory of practice architectures, we addressed the question: What are the institutional preconditions shaping WIL placement practices that enable and constrain particular students' access to, experience in, and leverage of professional learning at work for their future careers? Our analysis of three individual student interviews identified key student practices—applying for, doing, and leveraging placements—that are enabled and constrained by material-economic arrangements in family, university and work life, cultural-discursive arrangements in career development activities and social-political arrangements in personal and engineering networks. This paper discuss problems and results of BIM implementation in medium-size architectural practice upon 10-year time frame. The author analyses the process of BIM implementation from the practical and the theoretical point of view. The case study observations have been confronted with literature of the subject. Findings proved that practical benefits of using BIM technology in architectural practice are undisputed but many clients do not yet recognise the benefits of using BIM in the design/construction/operation process, and so refuse to bear the related costs. Therefore, BIM developmental and operational costs are not equally distributed among interested parties: architectural practices must bear the majority of the costs and risks related to implementing BIM technology. Within the digital era of building information modelling (BIM), the sustainability of architectural business practices and architect's professional values is highly anticipated by the competencies of individual architectural practitioners in performing their day-to-day job activities. However, their lack of competencies remains a significant barrier towards successful implementation of BIM within an organisation and individual architectural project. Previous review studies of BIM competencies have yet to focus on any architectural discipline, and therefore, this study attempts to redefine the expected BIM competence acts expected from the architects serving an architectural institutional environment. Towards this end, the PRISMA Statement (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) was employed to assess the empirical evidence found in the literature. The findings have confirmed that within a BIM-based environment, being competent is no longer viewed as being 'technology savvy' but rather having an ability to demonstrate change management, strategic planning, finance and budgeting, and project delivery sets of competencies in day-to-day job activities. This discovery extends the base knowledge of BIM competencies sets particularly for architectural practitioners and offers valuable and practical insights for architectural institutions to structure a framework of professional pathways for future architectural practitioners. How do architects know whether their design was successful and if the building performs as intended? This is important to improve the standard of the built fabric, to show the value in good design, for the architect to learn whether the spaces achieved the desired aims, and to check sustainability performance. This research investigates the types of feedback received and studied by architects in Victoria to learn from their own built works. A literature search identified possible informal and formal feedback methods and emerging feedback methods. A general pilot study was conducted by interviewing six senior architects in practice regarding their practices' feedback sources and methods of disseminating that knowledge. Additional feedback sources identified included the defects liability period, practice specific commissioning procedures, photography visits, and architectural services interviews. Knowledge dissemination methods included feedback reported directly to design teams, management & staff meetings, staff email, formal presentations, practice intranet software and updates to practice quality assurance procedures. Concerns raised by practitioners included procurement methods that actively discourage post occupancy analysis (POA), client unwillingness to pay for POA, and impacts on building performance of client or builder cost-based decisions. This project explores learning and reflection practices in architecture teams. When architects use reflection-on-action, they learn from experience. When they use reflection-in-action, they learn from experiencing. Such reflective practices help architects build project knowledge and deliver their project. But most architects work in teams, alongside individuals with different ways of learning and knowledge perspectives. This begs the question: how does learning and reflective practices affect architecture teams? This project addresses this question by 1) using reflective practice, team learning and design collaboration literature to frame how architects learn as a team; 2) exploring how team learning influence the competitive performance of architecture teams; 3) measuring how team learning affects architecture team performance; and 4) experimenting a reflective workshop to help architects improve their team learning skills and thus, team performance. Digitization has proliferated in architectural education and practice in the last several decades. Highly intricate and complex geometries are possible due to increasing computational power, yet when built require processes that typically are incompatible with existing manufacturing and building practices. The argument for building performance evaluation (BPE) has, to date, largely been made by actors focused upon ensuring the achievement of quantitative standards of performance, such as energy performance and carbon emissions. However, it can also be argued that the value of an understanding of quantitative and qualitative performance and its role in evidence-informed design is much broader. Indeed, that the potential provided by the embedding of learning cycles from BPE stretches across both architecturally and sustainability led design paradigms. Thus providing opportunities to inform the significant changes in architectural practice required to achieve architectural and sustainable holistic design excellence. In opposition to the general understanding of animism as an irrational religious set of beliefs, the—secular—modern animism embodied in this practice of built and grown architecture is operative. It conceives of places—ecosystems—as beings with agency that we garden with to nurture and express their resilience. It is a useful ontology for ecological practice; this architectural animism is ontopolitical; it co-creates a common world. At a recent symposium, a number of projects were presented as architectural soils and to give a voice to these earthly beings, the method was to write a letter from them to me. This first letter with the response in this article forms the beginning of an animistic correspondence. The medium places the reader in a pluriverse, in between the multiple voices of various "actants." The text is isomorphic to the embodied dialogue of this earthy practice. It is useful both to nurture societal awareness—empathy and care—towards these fragmentary ecosystemic beings, and as research method to conceive them, and our relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent research relating specifically to Anangu (Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara) schools in South Australia and the Northern Territory assert that Aboriginal people living in remote central Australian communities viewed first languages and cultures as central to a good education for their children. The South Australian ten-year Aboriginal Education Strategy (2019–2029) commits to culturally responsive pedagogies (CRP) and bilingual instruction in Anangu schools by 2029. This translation from research to policy has important implications for practice which the authors, five experienced practitioner-researchers in Anangu education contexts, reflect on through a "practice architectures" lens using a narrative methodology. The article explores the complex space that practitioner researchers negotiate and highlights the shifts required in moving from research-oriented arguments to working collaboratively to enacting research findings in practice. This study presents the environmental life cycle assessment of four low carbon design strategies applied in Danish, architectural practice. The subject of analysis is a set of five buildings erected within the same constrictions in terms of floor area, energy performance and construction costs. The tested design strategies were: use of recycled materials, design for extended durability of components, adaptable design, and design for reduction of operational energy demand. The results of the five buildings are compared with a reference building (i.e. a typical, Danish single-family dwelling). Results show that the recycling/upcycling strategy is the most effective in reducing the embodied carbon. The use of structural wood in the same design furthermore points to the use of wood as a viable low-carbon strategy. In combination, these two strategies result in an approximate 40% saving of life cycle embodied carbon compared to the reference. Using durable materials yields up to 30% lower embodied carbon compared to the reference, whereas a design for adaptability results in 17% lower embodied carbon. However, these results are sensitive to the scenarios made for the service lives of materials and the implemented disassembly solutions. In a life cycle carbon perspective, the emissions from energy use prove to be of importance, although depending on the modelling approaches of the energy mix. With the shrinking, global carbon budgets in mind, there is justified reason to holistically optimize the design of new buildings by integrating various design aspects addressing the whole life cycle of the building. Current debates about building performance evaluation often emphasize the 'performance gap' between how buildings perform in practice and how performance was envisaged during the design stage. While such debates continue to be dominated by energy considerations, increasing attention is directed towards the subjective experiences of building users in terms of thermal comfort and wellbeing. The latter trends are undoubtedly to be welcomed, but buildings continue to be conceptualized as fixed physical objects rather than entities that are enacted in practice. With the aim of challenging current assumptions, research is described which sought to reclaim the concept of building appraisal as practised by the pioneering architectural practice DEGW. The concept of building appraisal differs from current notions of building performance evaluation in that the point of departure is not the supposedly fixed entity of the building, but the essential fluidity of the occupying organization and their aspirations in terms of space. Empirical data are derived from archival sources and through extensive interaction with the DEGW diaspora, many of whom remain active at the leading edge of international practice. Critical reflection is an essential element in the professional teacher's practice. This article investigates vocational teacher education (VTE) students´ ability to reflect when engaged in site-based education and considers how arrangements in vocational teacher education enable or constrain this ability. The study was conducted at one Swedish university, where 78 VTE students' written self-evaluation reports from three practicum courses were analyzed on the basis of the concept of critical reflection and the theory of practice architectures. The findings emphasize the value of a strong relationship between the learning at university and in the teaching workplace, and the progression of critical reflection throughout the education. These findings support the conclusion that practice architectures that improve VTE students' ability to critical reflection need to include tasks that focuse on both reflection and on bridging the contexts of research-based and experience-based knowledge and practice. This article explores the continuing professional learning of Swedish hairdressing and floristry teachers, based on semi-structured interviews with six experienced female teachers. The research question that guided the work asks what continuing professional learning do experienced floristry and hairdressing teachers undertake in relation to their vocational field and to pedagogy. The analysis applies concepts from the theory of practice architectures, and focuses upon the sayings, doings and relatings that surface in the interview data. The findings indicate that the VET teachers handle their learning relatively independently of the schools at which they are employed. Furthermore, more personal agency was required from the floristry teachers, than from the hairdressing teachers for whom organised business interests provide ample education and training opportunities. Architecture has always embraced innovative ideas, materials, and techniques. Contemporary architecture is no exception. The emerging computation-based design approaches, known as Computational Design (CD), differ significantly from the previous ones since they ground the design representation in its computational logic instead of its geometric aspects. CD is changing both design theory and practice, but most architects are not yet aware of its impact. To promote a more critical view, while further improving its future application, this paper analyses the course of CD from its origin until today by (1) explaining its evolution since the early 60s, (2) discussing the advancements in CD tools during that period, (3) presenting architectural projects and events that explored CD, and (4) providing a chronology of CD literature. It concludes that, as it happened in the past, technological developments continue to shape architectural theory and practice and, simultaneously, are guided by their needs and aspirations. Vocational Education and Training (VET) teachers often begin teaching without teaching qualifications, and much of their learning necessarily takes place in the workplace. VET teaching is recognised as complex and requiring a broad range of skills and capabilities. At the same time, support for VET teacher learning in the workplace has been limited and ad hoc, with little focus on what workbased arrangements might better support teacher learning. Drawing on a study of novice VET teachers, this paper highlights the importance of VET teacher learning in the workplace and considers the site-based arrangements that enable and constrain novice teacher learning. The paper argues that when practices that support learning are interconnected to form a trellis, teacher learning is better supported than when practices that support learning are isolated and do not interconnect with each other. The paper concludes that novice teacher learning in the workplace needs to be supported through a range of site-based arrangements, and that these will be most effective if they form a strong trellis of inter-related practices that support learning in the workplace. What are the limits to sociality in public space? Within architectural and urban discourses, the shared spaces of our cities are often evoked as a democratic right and the place where democracy—the claim and exercise of rights—is enacted, providing a representation of society while being the site for its production. Where does this leave sociality? In the intellectual tradition of Kant, the conditions for sharing public space are provided by a universal right to hospitality mediated by tolerance. Derrida responds that tolerance is merely postponed hostility, whereas true hospitality requires asserted rights to be displaced by opening and recognition as a precondition for sociality. In this contribution, we draw on our work with our Paris-based architecture practice TXKL, and New South, a research platform that focuses on deconstructing and reconfiguring ways of thinking about, designing and representing the metropolises of the global south. These examples are presented in order to make the case for shared spaces conditioned by rules that offer alternatives to Kant's right to hospitality. We argue that such spaces may afford modes of sociality premised upon opening and recognition through forms of hospitality that more closely correspond to the notion elaborated by Derrida. The evolution of Building Information Modelling (BIM) is transforming practice in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. BIM provided revolutionary ways of generating, visualizing, exchanging, predicting and monitoring information. Over the last decade, delivering sustainable projects has become a high priority along with the recognition of the role the BIM plays to improve efficiency. However, BIM-enabled sustainability practices are still relatively immature and inconsistent. Previous research has identified challenges in the delivery of green-rated buildings, that include: dealing with documentation, evidencing requirements, monitoring progress, and decision making. Limited studies focused on linking workflow obstacles of green projects to potential improvements using current BIM capabilities. Through interrogating existing research via a systematic literature review, this paper takes the original approach of constructing an 'analysis map' to 'bridge the gap' and highlight current limitations and successes between BIM and sustainability practices. The findings are formulated through two parallel investigation tracks: the first is design task/BIM capability analysis, and the second is green project delivery problem/BIM enabled sustainability application. This research highlights future potential investigation areas, which are categorized into six clusters: representation; performance simulation; transaction and exchange; documentation; automation and standardization and guidance. In Vassanji's non-fictional narrative A Place Within: Rediscovering India, there is place-making through the lens of culture, religion, history, politics and migration. Positioning himself as a tourist to his ancestral homeland, the author makes observations that can be critiqued through the concept of 'palimpsest' – an intriguing 'layering' that gesture at wider circuits of culture. This study is an examination of the diasporic consciousness, religious encounters; heritage narrative features, the tracing of overlapping cultural spheres in Delhi, aesthetic and political tensions, as represented in Vassanji's narrative. The semiotic nature of design and engineering communications has often evaded direct interrogation; specifically the representation of requirements using multiple semiotic modes. This paper explores the semiotic character of requirement representation in the construction project design and engineering process by mobilising a social semiotic analytic framework to reveal how project artefacts (e.g. drawings; digital imagery; physical objects) are multimodal resources that critically affect stakeholder engagement and interpretation. The focused empirical study from a hospital construction project reveals the motivations and effects of multimodal and semiotic communicative choices of different parties (e.g. client; architect; engineer; design consultant) engaged on the same project; the representation (or not) of requirements via various semiotic modes being a social and political process. The contribution of the paper is in revealing the semiotic character of requirement representation and the relevance of semiotic-informed enquiry for an industry continuing to develop new technologies (e.g. virtual reality; BIM – building information modelling) for design and construction work. This was the approach of WORKAROUND: Women, Design, Action, an exhibition at RMIT University's Design Hub Gallery in Melbourne (July 25–August 11, 2018), which demonstrated an emerging movement of women working within an expanded field of architecture and education. The history of the multinational architecture and engineering firm AECOM provides a powerful account of the transformations taking place within architectural practice during the end of the twentieth century. The firm grew from a small profit-sapping partnership named Daniel, Mann, Johnson, and Mendenhall during the mid-1940s, becoming the largest architecture, engineering, and urban planning conglomerate in the world. This paper describes how conglomeration—the acquisition of diverse and existing firms—was predicated on fundamental shifts in the definition and value of architectural labor that broadened the domain of architectural work and enabled architectural practice to take on the shape of entire urban economies. More than simply helping reshape the tools, methods, and sites of architectural practice, computer-aided design software programs have become a prime shaper of the architectural worker's self-imagination through the digital environments and knowledge practices these software programs demand of their users. Architects today still rely heavily on intuition when attempting to handle more emotional, well-being-related design requests of clients. It seems that newly formed design demands present challenges that cannot be fully answered through the current existing design paradigms. Additionally, a 'humanization' trend in architectural design can be noticed of influences that steer architecture on a more 'humane' course, thereby advocating the viability of 'well-being' as a structured design approach in architecture. This paper aims to answer to this current momentum in architecture, by explicating a novel design approach called 'Design for Human Flourishing' (DfHF), based on a literature study of well-being theory through an architectural lens. The article discusses various issues on architectural practices and planning in the Soviet Union in the aftermath of the World War II. Though climatic differences, geographical features, and distinctive cultural legacies significantly contribute to variations in construction of public buildings and housing developments that were destroyed during the war in different parts of the country, the overall architectural policy is directed by the central government. It also reports on centralization of architectural planning in the state to address the design monotomy in industrialized construction. Moreover, it also discusses a series of measures undertaken by the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the Council of Ministers to transform the Soviet construction industry.

The importance of post-occupancy evaluation (POE) is widely acknowledged in the academic literature, industry press and, increasingly, by professional institutes. Learning from previous projects systematically is central to improving building performance, resulting in a built environment that better fits the needs of clients, end users, wider society and the environment. The key role of architects in pushing forward this agenda has been recognized, however evidence suggests that take up of POE is low across the profession. Whilst research has investigated barriers to POE across the construction industry, very little has considered the unique perspective of architects. In-depth interviews with UK-based architects are presented to explore their experiences in relation to POE and their perspectives on its potential to be a standard part of architectural practice. The findings indicate that a considerable amount of practical work is being undertaken, but uncertainty over what constitutes POE means it is often excluded from the POE label - with significant implications for the development of a rigorous evidence base. An appetite is identified for more holistic evaluation measures that move beyond the current preoccupation with energy efficiency to consider other aspects of building performance, and thereby sustainability, in a wider value framework.
