This paper reviews the history and evolution of Canada-United States transboundary water quantity politics (hydroelectricity, canals, irrigation, etc.) over the last 75 years: megaprojects on the St. Lawrence, Niagara, and Columbia Rivers during the early Cold War, a wide variety of transborder water issues stretching from coast to coast during the latter half of the twentieth century, and then recent hydropolitics concerning diversions from the Great Lakes basin. Utilizing an environmental history approach, and drawing from other fields such as historical geography, water policy, and political ecology, I show that Canada and the United States cooperatively manipulated border water environments on a large scale. Despite this coordination, there was often significant political and diplomatic controversy. I argue that coordinating or dealing with the United States deeply influenced the development of hydroelectricity in Canada, as well as the related hydraulic engineering expertise and technology. Moreover, transborder water politics also influenced many aspects of Canadian economic and political development, including federal-provincial relations. I explore themes such as Canada as a hydro state, the role of the Boundary Waters Treaty and the International Joint Commission, and concepts such as hydraulic nationalism and hydraulic imperialism. Nature based tourism (NBT) is becoming increasingly popular, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic as people began to sought outdoor activities. Accompanying the projected rise in NBT demand in a post COVID-19 era are increasing challenges associated with climate change, particularly in mountain regions. However, there is limited local knowledge documented to date from those who are intricately involved in mountain NBT activities and have experienced the impacts of climate change first hand. Using an online survey (n = 169), this research is the first to present the intimate knowledge of mountain guides in Canada, offering novel insight into climate change risks and opportunities for NBT in mountain regions, including strategies to contend with risk and adaptation. From this survey, 99% of guides indicated that they have experienced change in the mountain environment throughout the course of their career and due to the adaptive nature of guides, many have already implemented strategies to adapt to the impacts of climate change. While findings presented in this paper offer practical knowledge to plan for a future threatened with rapid climatic change, further research is required to explore effectiveness of adaptation strategies, scope of adaptive capacity, changes in natural infrastructure, and guides' roles as educators. Purpose: Employment participation offers benefits including income, sense of accomplishment, social engagement, and meaningful contribution to society. Rates of competitive employment of youth with disabilities are amongst the lowest in society, despite having capacity and motivation to participate in the workplace. The marginalization of young workers with disability presents a lost opportunity for youth, potential employers, and social care systems. In order to engage young people with disabilities in employment, we present an integrated, community-based model for employment participation preparation. Materials and methods: The employment participation pathway model is based on best available evidence and 15 years of program delivery for youth with disabilities preparing to transition out of school and into employment in the Canadian context. It was conceptualized using the Knowledge to Action framework and presented for consideration in the current paper. Results: Starting early, taking a person-directed approach to planning, and considering the individual and our systems contribute to effective and comprehensive transition to employment. Conclusions: The employment participation model provides evidence and examples for service providers to consider integrating into their repertoire and begin to construct similar pathways to equip their clients and families with skills, capacities, and knowledge as they journey towards workplace participation. A growing number of cities around the world have now developed urban digital strategies to speed up the pace of change, and more importantly to move their digital planning and policymaking from ad-hoc to an integrated and strategic approach. The paper provides a cross-national comparative study, based on recently developed urban digital strategies in Brisbane, Australia and Vancouver, Canada. The aim is to understand if and how urban digital strategies align with broader strategic planning in the two cities. To do so, the paper combines policy analysis with interviews of a selection of stakeholders in both cities. Indigenous-led impact assessment (ILIA) is a project review process designed and conducted with meaningful input and an adequate degree of control by Indigenous peoples. Using a case-based approach, this paper examines ILIAs conducted in Canada. The research – tools for ILIA – provides examples of options for the design and implementation of ILIA processes which have been utilized by Indigenous Nations while making their own determinations regarding if and how development should occur according to their unique locations, histories, natural resource issues, and governance. We have identified five tools: framework agreements; customized review panels; land use and consultation policy; impact and benefit agreements; and land use planning. Each tool is described along with a case study example of how the tool was applied within ILIA. Although our work focuses on Canada, the examples and tools can be valuable for Indigenous peoples and EIA practitioners in jurisdictions elsewhere who are looking to understand how ILIA might be operationalized to reflect their settings, values, and priorities. The results are helpful to Indigenous governments and groups looking to develop their own approaches to assessment, and for understanding the relative strengths and experiences of options they may consider or adapt for their own needs. Using a queer theoretical lens, this conceptual paper explores the complexities of working with queer youth in leisure spaces by using genderplay to explore gender identity. Given the current social and political climate in Canada, researchers in this area face considerable professional road blocks from gatekeepers, despite providing often life-saving access for youth to queer mentors, community, and health resources. This paper, therefore, provides insight into the pervasiveness of the image of the child that informs the anxiety present in current political, social, and cultural discourses about queer children and the danger that image is putting these actual children in by limiting access to the above stated resources. Moreover, we expose how the image of the child is always invested in ideals of middle and upper-class whiteness, able-bodiedness, and imagined straightness from the outset, which further limits access to leisure spaces for queer children who may be otherwise marginalized. The dominance of fossil fuels in electricity generation fuel mix continues to undermine the importance of electricity as a critical factor for sustainable economic development. As with most economies of the world, the Canadian fuel mix for electricity generation is dominated by fossil fuels. This scenario creates both environmental and resource sustainability challenges. There are questions marks over the potentials of nonfossil energy sources to address these challenges and ensure a more sustainable electricity generation. This study aims to examine the potentials of nuclear energy and hydropower to substitute the fossil fuels of coal and natural gas in electricity generation for Canada. A trans-log production function was estimated with the ridge regression method to obtain the parameter estimates. The empirical findings show that, with the exception of coal input, all energy inputs have positive output elasticities, which indicate that an increase in the energy inputs will increase output in Canada. The results further provide evidence of positive elasticity of substitution between the non-fossil energy sources and the fossil fuels which give credence to the hypothesis that clean energy sources such as nuclear energy and hydropower have the potential to substitute for the fossil fuels of coal and natural gas the electricity generation process for Canada. The estimates show that the smallest substitution occurs between coal and gas, which is an additional evidence that clean energy has higher chances of substituting fossil fuels. Both scholarly and popular accounts of Canada's relatively non-conflictual immigration politics have attributed substantial power to the selectivity of the country's immigration policy. In this paper, we use new measures of knowledge of the fiscally selective elements of the immigration system to demonstrate that individuals who know more about the system are, in fact, more supportive of immigration, and that this impact is strongest among those who consider themselves on the left. We argue that this is evidence of the progressive's dilemma, showing in particular that knowledge of welfare state-relevant selection criteria such as the Canadian system's discrimination against those with chronic illnesses or those who are older is much more important in determining the attitudes of respondents on the left than those on the right. This paper presents the conceptual framework of a holistic, intelligent decision-support system (IDSS) to plan, manage and optimize water quality monitoring programs (WQMPs) for surface waters. WQMPs are a crucial component of water management because information on water quality is essential when taking action such as legislative compliance, environmental projects, urban and infrastructure development. Planning, managing and optimizing WQMPs is a complex process and requires multiple variables, rules and subject matter expert knowledge. The specific goals of this paper were to (1) assess to what extent the subject domain (WQMPs) is deemed appropriate for an IDSS; (2) describe the design process of the conceptual framework; (3) present the main elements of the system architecture; (4) present two case studies that served as potential end users; (5) illustrate the applicability of the IDSS and (6) describe subsequent steps to further test the IDSS. The IDSS was developed on the premise that the proposed system could (1) improve quality, (2) capture undocumented expertise that is perishable or in short supply (tacit knowledge), (3) provide accessible expertise to novice users, (4) have a training effect on users, and (5) show that the system, even partially complete, could still be useful. Our initial assumptions regarding these points were validated through interviews with subject matter experts. The conceptual framework was designed based on a literature review, interviews with 44 subject matter experts from Europe, Canada and the United States, interaction with end users from two case studies in the Province of Quebec, Canada, and five information technology experts from Canada and Germany. The IDSS presented in this paper will facilitate the planning, management and optimization of WQMPs. It will be exportable to various watersheds and consider the WQMP planner's need to update the network rapidly if changes occur in human, financial and technical resources. In this paper I discuss how being a student of Northern Bush Cree traditions has revealed some possibilities for understanding how berries listen, and respond to, living in, and on, the edge of areas of extreme extraction. Members of Fort McKay First Nation and Bigstone Cree Nations tend to their relationships with the sentient landscape and its entirety of living beings through respectful speech, behaviour, and harvesting practices. The agency of those living beings is expressed through their decisions as to whether or not humans can encounter, harvest, and share in their substance. By examining relationships of reciprocity between the human and other-than-human animal world from a post-humanist perspective, this paper seeks to expand upon traditional indicators of contamination resulting from the large-scale industrial development of the Athabasca oil sands in First Nations' traditional territories, and to value and share some observations and knowledge of Cree Elders and knowledge holders. Over the past several decades, the use of genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMs, often referred to as Genetically Modified Microorganisms or GMMs) has become widespread in the production of food processing aids and other food ingredients. GEMs are advancing food production by increasing efficiency, reducing waste and resource requirements, and ultimately enabling beneficial innovations such as the cost-effective fortification of food with essential nutrients, vitamins, and amino acids, and delivery of tailored enzymes to achieve unique food processing capabilities. Regulatory agencies, including those in the European Union, United States, and Canada review the safety of GEMs when evaluating food substances produced using GEMs to ensure that both the microorganism and the resulting food substance are safe. This paper provides a summary of historical and current use of GEMs in food manufacture, an overview of frameworks that regulate their use, and a description of the safety assessment of both GEMs and food substances produced with GEMs. The paper encourages regulatory agencies around the globe to take a more aligned approach to the safety evaluation and regulatory oversight of GEM-produced food ingredients and enzymes, a category of food substances that enables more sustainable consumer food choices. To address risks associated with critical dementia-related wandering, three guidelines were developed for use by persons living with dementia, their care partners, and professional staff, to choose wander-management strategies. This evidence-based research incorporates knowledge mobilization approaches that directly involve the three types of stakeholders in using the guidelines in the real world. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the knowledge translation of three guidelines on wander-management strategies, and to further deploy these guidelines to organizations across Canada. Steering committees across Canada were established for consultation. Guidelines were then shared among these organizations via Google slides. Health professionals, caregivers, community organizations and persons living with dementia completed an online survey (via Google) or paper-based survey to provide feedback on the guidelines. The guidelines were then translated from English to French using a forward-translation method. The guidelines were adopted across ten organizations in four Canadian provinces. Adoption included introduction and formal training to staff. It took 22 months from the development of the guidelines to the dissemination and launch of the guidelines to the organizations. Participants (n = 73) were very satisfied with the developed guidelines and agreed they were easy to navigate, easy to understand, and the information provided was useful. A stakeholder-driven approach used for guideline development and dissemination were successful methods for minimizing the time for this work to become practice. This paper examines masculinity, migration and the changing occupational status of nursing through the lens of therapeutic mobilities; health related mobilities of people (nurses) and products (credentials). Indian men have become increasingly interested in nursing as a career, and this interest is strongly associated with the profession's international motility-its mobility potential. The research reported in this paper traces the migration trajectory across time (2008-2016) and over space (India to Canada) and reveals an overrepresentation of male nurses in international migration contexts (Canada), compared to the Indian context. Male nurses also disproportionally benefit from these mobilities in terms of their occupational success post-migration. Mobilities can be therapeutic for the status of nursing in India, which rises in line with the degree of international motility the profession offers, but gendered distinctions in the outcomes of the migration process illustrate the importance of highlighting uneven mobilities. International mobilities are also deeply implicated in ongoing transformations occurring in the 'moorings' of nursing educational, employment and regulatory structures in India. Many commentators are concerned about automobility's ill-effects and seek a shift away from auto dependence towards more sustainable transport. Little research, however, considers the ways that parent-child mobilities are linked to such a transition. Through the lens of social practice theory, this paper explores how parents travelling with young children preserve and challenge automobility as they enact auto dependency, multimodality and altermobility. The paper argues that it is vital to understand these practices for identifying 'cracks' in automobility and the possibility of more sustainable and equitable daily mobilities. International students have been overlooked in geographies of ‘home’, yet this paper demonstrates how international student mobility offers unique insights that can advance our understanding of ‘home’ and belonging in the city. Drawing on photo-elicitation and mid-point and return interviews with Canadian students, this paper explores the everyday home-making practices of exchange students in urban centres in the Global South. It focuses on the ways in which international students create a sense of ‘home’ and belonging in their host city and how insider knowledge gained through local everyday practices is converted into cultural capital. It contributes to the literature by considering how home-making practices are implicated in spatial and scalar boundary-making processes for distinction. By illustrating through participants’ photographs how students articulate ‘home’ using spatial and scalar markers, I examine how students tighten the spatial boundaries of ‘home’ to focalise and localise symbolic capital within the city. The findings further add to debates on im/mobility by demonstrating that students’ distinguish their relative immobility during the sojourn from the mobility of travellers and tourists to legitimise claims of belonging as ‘insiders’ and of place-specific capital. Drawing from applied performance practice research that examined the experiences of eight queer Desi/South Asian young adults in Toronto, this paper specifically uses micro-encounters to extend the idea that creative methods offer openings that facilitate different kinds of access for different participants. This paper also challenges the assumption that insider knowledge renders more access, and encourages researchers to ‘work the shadows’ and (re)consider the tensions and possibilities of using applied performance practices without reproducing normative visions of bodies and deficit social identity discourses. The proposals submitted by Russia involves the investigation of mining and production facilities and accounting of atomic materials, and the conduct of investigations in case of violation of the weapons ban.

Collaboration among Indigenous Peoples and the Saskatchewan government in Canada has led to Indigenous K-12 education progress concerning First Nations and Métis peoples, the Indigenous populations whose traditional territories exist within Saskatchewan. Acknowledging such advancements, this paper is concerned with how white identified students continue to graduate with higher completion and achievement rates than Métis and First Nations students. Critical race theory (CRT) can assist with understanding how racialised statistics persist in spite of decades of government administered Indigenous education initiatives and mandates. Contributing to anti-racist informed Indigenous education scholarship, this study applies aspects of CRT scholar Cheryl Harris's whiteness as property theory to a qualitative critical race methodological analysis of 13 Métis teachers' K-12. stories of racism. When viewed from a CRT lens, the findings suggest Métis teachers' experiences with racism in K-12 schools can contribute to our understanding of how to ensure democratic and racially just practices. The growing aging population in Canada has multi-faceted psycho-social needs. Social workers are well-positioned to address these needs, despite many challenges. This paper reports findings from the World Café at the Gerontology Symposium in Alberta, Canada, held in 2018. The goal was to learn from social work practitioners, researchers, and educators (N = 49) about current and future needs of gerontological social work in Alberta. There were two research questions: 1) What strategies do social workers need on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels to help better serve the growing older adult population in Alberta? (R1) 2) How can social workers promote the value and contribution of gerontological social work within the interprofessional community? (R2) The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Ten R1-related themes emerged: personal traits of a social worker; professional skills; bio-psycho-social needs of older adults; community connections; access to benefits; gerontological social work education; integrated healthcare; aging policy; ageism; and advocacy to strengthen the voice of older adults. The three R2-related themes include strengthening the status of the social work profession; building trust through demonstrated skills; and interprofessional education and practice. Flood behaviour is likely to alter as a result of the impacts of climate change. This paper investigates the non-stationarity in the flood regime of several Canadian rivers through an analysis of peaks over threshold (POT) data. Identification of thresholds and ensuring the independence of POT events are the two major challenges in the implementation of a POT approach. In the present research, a semi-automatic approach based on the POT package in R – an open-source software environment for statistical computing has been used. A total of 127 hydrometric reference streamflow gauging stations that are reasonably free from human intervention have been considered in the present analysis. This ensured the reliability of the trends identified in the flow and timing measures considered herein. The POT data have been extracted from daily streamflow data for each hydrometric station. Four flow and timing measures, such as (1) duration of POT events, (2) volume of POT events, (3) annual sum of durations in POT events, and (4) annual sum of volumes of POT events, were extracted using the daily flow data. The trends in the flow and timing measures were investigated using the Mann–Kendall nonparametric test, and the significance of trends was evaluated using the bootstrap resampling approach. The results of the analysis clearly indicated a predominance of decreasing trends at a greater number of stations in all the four measures of flow and timings considered. It can be concluded that the present analysis indicates a remarkable change in the flood regime of the Canadian watersheds considered herein. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the phonology of an Akan-speaking child aged 5;3 with Protracted Phonological Development. His phonological system had many strengths, with most consonants accurate at least some of the time and with many long words, but with weaknesses that lead to a very low Whole Word Match. In addition to some difficulty with consonant and vowel sequences (leading to assimilation), there are issues relative to complex consonants that contain vowel features (consonants with secondary articulations, the labiopalatal glide, and /r/) and with syllabic consonants (nasals and /r/) that lead to deletion, epenthesis, and some extensive changes in output. One complex place of articulation (alveolopalatal) is well-established and frequently overgeneralized in the output. This paper discusses the joint-knowledge production that emerged through a community-based research project conducted in partnership with a social service organization. Specifically, we present an unanticipated metaphor ('Canada is clean') that became evident through utilizing an art-based methodology. The methodology had five participants assemble photo-diaries over the span of two weeks. Participants took (unedited) photographs of themselves and their environments using their smartphone. The photo diaries were then presented to two focus groups: (1) a group of consumer-recipients of the social service organization and (2) a group of program workers. The focus groups were analyzed through Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis tailored for assessing groups. We address the meaning of the central metaphor, though place an emphasis on the milieu that promoted its co-construction and thereby upon the conditions that enabled arts-based research to succeed. This paper examines how stock returns and volatility in the Canadian stock market have been affected by both the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated vaccination program. The empirical analysis is based on the generalized autoregressive conditionally heteroskedastic model which explicitly allows the inclusion of information on the COVID-19 pandemic and the vaccination program. The analysis uses daily Canadian equity returns and volatility, spanning the period 27 January 2020, to 31 August 2021. The findings provide evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic exerts a significant negative impact on the mean of Canadian stock returns and a positive impact on their volatility. In contrast, the findings provide novel evidence that the vaccination program in Canada has reversed these detrimental effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we report on a provincial consultation in Canada, of the adoption of the CAPA model, which was designed to improve mental health service delivery to mental health stakeholders. While the delivery of mental health services in Canada is largely the purview of the medical profession, the implementation of an interdisciplinary team approach has included the social work profession as a significant part of that team, but the direction and mode of service continue to be largely determined by the assumptions embedded in the medical model. We interviewed 50 participants, conducted three focus groups, and circulated an online survey with 115 responses. We explored how the CAPA model commodifies mental health care and the impact this has on social workers employed in that system through exploring the McDonaldization categories of efficiency, calculability predictability and control. The participants were critical of the commodification of mental health service delivery and expressed how the expectations for practice were a lack-of-fit for the practice of social work. We explored the perceived strengths and barriers and our findings suggested that the rise of neoliberalism and managerialism has superimposed a business model approach to mental health services so that fiscal efficiency, parsimonious use of professional time and a focus on individual responsibility are now driving principles. In the 1970s, three Canadian jurisdictions (federal, Quebec, Nova Scotia) introduced statutory unjust dismissal legislation. The objective was to extend 'just cause' protections long enjoyed by unionized workers to eligible non-union employees by permitting employees to file a complaint with a labour tribunal. The presumptive remedy for unjustly terminated employees was to be reinstatement. However, in practice the majority of successful complainants are not reinstated. This paper examines the history and rationale for the introduction of unjust dismissal legislation in Canada, the meaning and scope of 'unjust' as developed by adjudicators, and the approach of tribunals in the three jurisdictions to crafting remedies to compensate unjustly dismissed employees who are not reinstated. This paper used a structural perspective to examine unmet healthcare needs in women at risk for eating disorders in Canada utilizing the Canadian Community Health Survey. The results revealed that body dissatisfied women had reported significantly higher unmet needs compared to body satisfied women (χ 2(1) =29.31, p <.05). Body dissatisfied women were also more likely to identify structural reasons for unmet needs. Considering the high costs associated with eating disorders, barriers creating inequitable health services need to be addressed in clinical practice, organizational structures, policy, and in research to improve treatment pathways. Heritage conservation's modernist underpinnings limit engagement with heritage value, resulting in incompatible additions to historic places. A good example is the controversy surrounding the proposed addition to the Château Laurier National Historic Site in Ottawa, Canada, designed by Peter Clewes and approved by the City of Ottawa in February 2021. The addition's defenders used the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada's modern dictums, particularly legibility and the supremacy of expert knowledge, to justify the Neo-Modernist addition against public outcry. This paper defends the public's cries for a more fanciful, historicist addition. It argues that additions to historic places should be more than visually and physically compatible. Additions to heritage sites should be stylistically and intellectually compatible and engaged in dialogue with a site's heritage values. It asks, what do new additions communicate about the original historic site? How do they help or hinder our understanding of the site's social or historical significance? Designers and evaluators of new additions should ask themselves these questions. They should more closely consider the impact of new additions on historic places' heritage values. This study builds on research that found a significant lack of racial diversity in Canadian university kinesiology programs. We extend previous findings by including the experiences of students who reveal how whiteness structures every aspect of their kinesiology education. We employ Critical Race Theory and theories of whiteness within a case study of eight kinesiology faculties in Canada. The mixed methods data collection included: (a) analysis of website photos and anti-racism documents to determine the perceived racial diversity and anti-racism priority; and (b) semi-structured interviews with five undergraduate students from one kinesiology program to analyze their experiences with whiteness. We found (1) white privilege was evident through an overrepresentation of white bodies among the professoriate, overlooking whiteness in research and teaching, and a dearth of policies targeting anti-racism; and (2) that white social dominance was prevalent but made invisible in student culture, which allowed the needs and experiences of racialized and international students to be ignored. Eurocentric ideologies of meritocracy, individualism, and scientific objectivity that reflect the values of the dominant group create a white racial frame that remains unnamed but centered. The aim of this research paper is to further inform how whiteness operates in kinesiology programs. A social accountability mandate for Canadian medical schools formally emerged in Canada with changes to accreditation standards in 2015. However, how social accountability is defined and operationalized within medical schools has transpired independently. Key enablers of social accountability in Canadian medical schools have been largely unexplored. This paper is the first of a two part series that seeks to explore drivers of social accountability in a sample of Canadian medical schools. Nine key drivers of social accountability emerged from the data including a unified vision, committed leadership, accreditation standards, champions of social accountability, authentic community engagement, community-based learning opportunities, a supportive organizational and governance structure, diversity within medical schools, and measurement of progress and outcomes. This is the first study of its kind to examine what is driving social accountability across Canadian medical schools. An appreciative inquiry approach highlights areas of progress for future work to focus and build upon. This paper presents the findings from part one of the study – exploring the themes emerging from key informant interviews with senior leaders. Recently, the Canadian government has initiated a wide range of actions and gestures aimed at reconciling historical injustices including the state's relationship with Indigenous peoples and nations. Reforming K-12 education to adequately teach Canada's difficult past has been a key priority in this movement, leading to curriculum change across the country. This article explores the development of a new curriculum in British Columbia that explicitly aims to address historical injustice and reconciliation. Drawing from an analysis of curriculum documents and interviews with six curriculum writers, this paper illustrates how political motivations and social pressures to redress 'historical wrongs' are adapted and translated into curricular content expectations. This article argues that the new social studies curriculum places greater attention on historical injustice and in doing so shifts the larger goals informing social studies education in Canada. At the same time these shifts adopt state discourses of reconciliation and multiculturalism which limit their ability to adequately engage the difficult past. This paper raises questions and makes suggestions about the possible roles and limitations for social studies and history education in pursuit of reconciliation and redress in post-conflict and settler colonial contexts. In 2011 the Consensus Statement on Performance Assessment was published in Medical Teacher. That paper was commissioned by AMEE (Association for Medical Education in Europe) as part of the series of Consensus Statements following the 2010 Ottawa Conference. In 2019, it was recommended that a working group be reconvened to review and consider developments in performance assessment since the 2011 publication. Following review of the original recommendations in the 2011 paper and shifts in the field across the past 10 years, the group identified areas of consensus and yet to be resolved issues for performance assessment. This paper addresses developments in performance assessment since 2011, reiterates relevant aspects of the 2011 paper, and summarises contemporary best practice recommendations for OSCEs and WBAs, fit-for-purpose methods for performance assessment in the health professions. The partial release of Canadian intelligence assessments on Iraq during 2002 and 2003 has made it possible for the first time to examine the role that intelligence played in informing the Chrétien government's decisions in the lead-up to the war in Iraq. Canadian assessments of US policy on Iraq, Baghdad's weapons of mass destruction capabilities, the regional implications of an invasion, and the subsequent internal instability of Iraq proved to be largely accurate, in contrast to much of the analysis on Iraq by other members of the Five Eyes intelligence partnership. At a time when psychoanalytic psychotherapists are struggling worldwide to provide ongoing psychotherapy to children and adolescents during the current pandemic, this paper provides three vignettes, which focus on the impact of the pandemic and of providing psychotherapy online. These vignettes elaborate on contributions made to 'Town Hall' meetings of the Canadian Association of Psychoanalytic Child Therapists. We describe some of what we have learned in our efforts to provide online therapy during this disjointed time. We conclude by reflecting on the crucial importance of peer groups meeting together to contain our own pandemic anxieties, to maintain the therapeutic frame in online treatment, and to be supportive of the internal psychic frames of our patients, all of which have been battered during the pandemic. Assessing student learning in ways that offer students, institutions and systems with sound information is a considerable challenge for higher education. Despite demonstrable progress, a disconnect remains between methods used for assessing learning, improvement and accountability. This muddled situation is illustrated through a review of contemporary practice in the USA, Canada, Australia, the UK and New Zealand. To advance research and practice, this paper contributes a structured set of criteria that practitioners can use to evaluate whether an assessment functions effectively across different levels of practice. These technical and practical criteria touch on issues such as sampling, the viability of aggregation, reporting and cost-benefit considerations. The paper tests these criteria by considering their capacity to drive multi-level improvement in education quality. It is contended that the criteria provide perspective and structure for reconciling the quantitative assessment of higher education quality at different levels of practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diefenbaker Center's origins, as a working archive and public museum, an American inspiration located at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. The center is described to have similarities to the American presidential libraries, which has relation to Prime Minister John Diefenbaker's beliefs. An overview of his understanding of the concept of commemoration is offered.

This paper is a collaborative effort of one social work professor and ten students from a master's level course concerning practice with individuals and couples in a Canadian university. The strengths perspective was used as the lens through which practice was viewed. The paper details the results of an assignment which asked the students to examine the arts in relation to the people that they work with. The students engaged with the process and learned about themselves and the strengths approach to practice. This paper focuses on the operations of heterosexism and strategies to counter it in a particular service context: the context of psychosocial support services for women with cancer. The paper draws on findings from a participatory, qualitative study set in Ontario, Canada in which 26 lesbians were interviewed about their experiences of cancer diagnosis, treatment, health care and social support, and their feelings and perceptions about shifts in identity, body, sexuality and relationships. This paper focuses on findings related to the changes research participants perceived as necessary in the provision and organization of cancer support services, in order to increase access and ensure equity for lesbians with cancer and their families. This article focuses on anti-homophobia education, a field of social justice. The article comprises various research papers which explore how anti-homophobia education is being approached in some teacher education programs and in the broader field of education in regions of Australia and Canada. It details how teacher educators and educators more generally are trying to counteract, disrupt and challenge the homophobia and heterosexism that prevail in educational contexts and in broader communities. The article focuses on certain theoretical frameworks being utilized by educators doing anti-homophobia education. These include liberal humanism, critical theory, feminist post-structuralism, queer theory, psychology-based theories and psychoanalysis.

This paper analyses two dimensions of 'waiting' in the realm of family reunification: the policy perspective and the immigrants' experience. First, in line with the migration management paradigm, the Canadian government has introduced various measures to reduce 'waiting times'. We discuss changes in the family reunification programme of parents and grandparents implemented since 2011 as emblematic of these measures. Such changes are also situated within global trends that make family reunification policies more restrictive. Second, based on 19 interviews with already established immigrants who are sponsors of a parent, we analyse the experience of 'waiting for care'. For families attempting to reunite to fill care needs, new measures may speed up reunification, but they may also mean that being together is, for many, more difficult to achieve, temporary, and precarious. We argue that the politics of 'waiting times' management has depoliticised the right to family reunification and institutionalised temporariness in this component of immigration policy. These repercussions of state policies significantly alter how immigrant families can provide care to their members and sustain social reproduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acknowledging differences in contexts, the purpose of this paper considers how physical education and sport pedagogy (PESP), while maintaining our collective identity, can most effectively develop a capacity to engage with academic and institutional changes in productive, proactive ways. This, we contend, entails considering extending the groups or communities in which PESP is represented to increase the potential to access substructures with other academic communities. We have chosen a metaphor to frame this work, acknowledging that metaphor can often open-up new ways to view a specific aspect or phenomenon that has been conceived in a common, or perhaps static way. Worked examples of the metaphor are presented from an Irish and Canadian perspective and implications of these examples pose possible ways forward. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current metadata schema, internet search engines and databases of scientific literature have an Anglo-American language and cultural bias. While it is possible to catalogue or index non-English, non-Latin script publications and achieve some degree of success in the retrieval of such information, librarians and researchers are often disappointed by inconsistencies in the accuracy of search results for this type of publication and frustrated by the limitations created by the biases embedded in the technology and schema. This paper is the result of a two-year dialog between a Farsi-speaking medical librarian in Iran and an English-speaking metadata librarian in Canada. They present the argument that a metadata schema which incorporates graphical images such as Emoji along with keyword indexing or a controlled vocabulary and new search engines which can make use of the new schema for Boolean searching is a robust potential solution for the difficulties they discussed. While this new information seeking environment that requires both the edition of a graphical facet to metadata schema and new search engines presents the potential to break down significant intercultural barriers, the authors recognize that this undertaking is more than a simple technological or procedural change but would require significant agreement between and work from librarians, standards bodies and researchers.
