In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a dual wavelength fibre laser (DWFL) based on the use of an inhomogeneously-broadened semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) gain medium as well as two arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) together with two optical channel selectors (OCSs) and a broadband fibre Bragg grating (FBG) to generate dual wavelength output at variable channel spacings. The widest spacing obtained from the DWFL is 12.21 nm, while the narrowest spacing is 1.16 nm. The DWFL has good stability with only minor power fluctuations of less than 2 dB and a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of approximately 38.5 dB with fluctuations of less than 0.5 dB. The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of a 40 Gbps Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing system with 32 channels, spaced at 50 GHz. The design has been optimized for a long haul optical link for Modified Duobinary Return-to-Zero modulation format to establish its superiority over the conventional Duobinary Return-to-Zero format using OptiSystem simulator. The proposed system is designed and tested under perfect dispersion compensation for dispersion management and also with some residual dispersion in the link to mitigate the existing non-linearities. This paper also outlines the superiority of duobinary coding over the conventional non-return to zero modulation with the integration of unequal channel spacing to minimize the Four-Wave Mixing effect. In this article, the proposed Distributed Raman Amplifier (DRA) simulator is designed on the MATLAB Simulink platform. 16 channels DWDM in C-band (1544–1559 nm) and 32 channels CWDM system in S-, C- and L band (1460–1625 nm) are executed with data rate of 100 Gb/s. The designed standalone system realizes the various effects that may arise at the receiver output due to reconfiguration of channels in real-time dynamic WDM optical traffic. Gain excursion assessment, and bit error rate (BER) are investigated for 200 km long Fiber cable and 45 km of Raman amplifier in co-pumping, counter pumping and bidirectional pumping propagation. This article presents the architecture of an ASON testbed implemented in the EMPIRICO project, focusing on design and implementation issues of real-time provisioning of bidirectional optical connections supported by a distributed GMPLS-based control plane and triggered by the network management system. Experimental performance is evaluated over a unidirectional and a bidirectional all-optical OADM ring in which neither wavelength converters nor optical resources discovery are employed.
