This study aimed to investigate the roles of a text-highlighting tool and readers' re-reading behaviour in their integrated understanding of multiple documents. University students (N = 95) read five partly conflicting documents on a health-related issue on a touch display with or without a text-highlighting tool. Integrated understanding of documents was assessed by the number of intertextual connections in essays written after reading and by a source-content mapping task. The provision of the text-highlighting tool resulted in longer initial reading times even when subtracting the time taken for highlighting, but shorter re-reading times, particularly for participants with a high number of re-readings. Further, only for participants with a high number of re-readings, the provision of the text-highlighting tool resulted in more intertextual connections than when no text-highlighting tool was provided. Participants' source-content integration was positively related to the number of re-readings, regardless of whether the text-highlighting tool was provided. Finally, additional exploratory eye-tracking analyses revealed that for two out of the five documents, participants in the with-highlighting condition focused on significantly smaller parts of the documents during re-reading than controls. Four experiments (N = 1,064) examined how primes enhancing the cognitive accessibility of money influence meaning in life (MIL) as a function of socioeconomic status (SES) and current financial self-efficacy. Study 1 demonstrated that financial self-efficacy mediated the association between SES and MIL following a prime of gaining money. In the control condition, SES was unrelated to financial self-efficacy, but following the prime of gaining money, SES was positively linked with financial self-efficacy, which in turn predicted enhanced meaning. Studies 2, 3a, and 3b demonstrated that primes of losing money similarly enhanced MIL as a function of SES and financial self-efficacy. Extending these results, exploratory analyses in Studies 3a and 3b suggested that money priming may influence occupational choices differently as a function of SES via MIL and financial self-efficacy. The promoter of prosocial behavior in fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic needs to be examined. Here, we examined the effect of experienced awe through cross-sectional (Study 1), a 3-wave longitudinal (Study 2) and experimental (Study 3–4) approaches. Study 1 showed that dispositional awe positively predicted one's prosocial behavior in the pandemic (N = 1281). Study 2 (N = 332) observed that experienced awe predicted higher prosociality, and this relationship was serially mediated by connectedness and empathy. Study 3 (N = 153) and 4 (N = 156) confirmed that elicited awe, compared to that of amusement and neutrality, promoted multiple types of prosociality (Study 3) and willingness of blood donation (Study 4) via serial mediation of connectedness and empathy. These findings suggest that the experience of awe increases one's connectedness to the world, which in turn enhances empathic concern and prosociality in pandemic fighting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The efficient total synthesis of anti-tumor natural product pongaflavone (1) was described starting from commercially available 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone (9) via seven steps and in 16% overall yield. Its two natural analogues pongachromene (2) and 7,8-(2",2"-dimethylpyrano)-5,3',4'-trihydroxy-3-methoxyflavone (3) were also synthesized following the similar procedure with the yields of 11% and 18%, respectively. Their preliminary anti-tumor activities were evaluated by the inhibition effect on A549 cells. The result showed that this kind of natural products exhibited different levels of anti-tumor activity. The full-scale escalation of Russia's war against Ukraine in 2022 created a surge of mental health issues, requiring urgent, evidence-based interventions to reduce trauma and mitigate stress. Reflecting recommendations from leading specialists in the field, Ukrainian mental health professionals sought to develop appropriate skills and knowledge for working in wartime through advanced training programs. This study aimed to investigate the experiences of Ukrainian mental health professionals having completed advanced training in mental health topics in wartime. A survey design was adopted, using the purposefully developed, and validated 'Wartime Learning Satisfaction Scale'. Regression analysis assessed the hypothesized contribution of four scales (Education, Educator, Learner, and War) to the perceived value of advanced training and learners' satisfaction. Respondents (n = 271) were trained in up to 30 courses (M = 4.27, SD = 3.03) lasting from two to over 120 h. Regression analysis revealed different predictors for satisfaction and value of the courses. Advanced training resulted in higher satisfaction with learning if it matched professional goals of mental health professionals and perceived higher value when relevant to societal demand, consistently constructed, practically useful, and not solely focusing on war-related issues. Respondents who completed all advanced training courses they were interested demonstrated significantly higher confidence in working in wartime. Background: The Beatalk technique is a speech therapy method, based on human beatboxing, involving intense, rapid repetitions of speech-like sounds. The goals of the current feasibility study were to test its effect in enhancing articulation accuracy and voice measures in a small group of adults with intellectual disability (ID), using a wide range of measures of verbal communication, and to refine the treatment protocol. Methods: A group pre-test–post-test experimental design was used (n = 12). Treatment consisted of ten weekly group sessions of 40 min, each followed by two self-practice sessions. Changes in speech intelligibility, voice, and communication skills were assessed. Results: The findings indicate significant improvements in speech production and intelligibility measures (Percentage of Consonant Correct, and staff-member intelligibility scores), voice measures (vocal loudness, Harmonic-Noise-Ratio, shimmer, and jitter) and staff-member communication scores. Implications: These results extend our understanding of the effects of the Beatalk technique, and suggest that it may have potential as an effective intervention for adults with ID. Persuasive systems motivate behaviour change using persuasive strategies (PS) which are often implemented in various ways. However, whether or not the effectiveness of PS varies depending on implementation choices is yet to be investigated via an empirical study. We conduct a large-scale study of 568 participants to investigate if and how individuals at different Stages of Change (SoC) respond to different implementations of each strategy in the same system. We also explore why the implementations motivate behaviour change using ARCS motivation model. Our results show that people's SoC plays a significant role in the perceived effectiveness of different implementations of the same strategy and that the implementations motivate for different reasons. For instance, people at the precontemplation stage are motivated by reward strategy implemented as badges because it increases their Confidence, while people in the preparation stage prefer reward implemented as points to build their Confidence. Our work links SoC theory with motivation theory and Persuasive Systems Design (PSD) model to offer practical guidelines for tailoring PS implementations to individuals to motivate behaviour change. In this paper we explore the influences of normal ageing and verb transitivity on sentence production. The underlying aim is to provide a foundation for further research on sentence production in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We used a computer-based written sentence production task, designed to elicit intransitive, monotransitive and ditransitive sentences. Data was collected using keystroke logging, a technique to capture the entire typing process. Data of ninety healthy elderly was analysed focusing on the following writing process variables: time on task, production time and pause times. Results show that age influences time on task, pause time before sentences and within words. Verb transitivity influences time on task, production time and pause time between words. For pause time before sentences and between words, an interaction effect between age and verb transitivity was found as well. These results indicate that a follow-up study with AD patients should not attribute a slowdown in one of these variables to the disease in its entirety but should instead be compared with the slowdown in age-matched healthy peers. The aim was to analyse the relationship between isokinetic strength, dynamic stability, muscular extensibility and impacts transmission during fatigued running. Low- and high-frequency impacts—related to body movements and the severity of impacts, respectively—were assessed in 17 male recreational runners, before and after a treadmill running fatigue protocol, using a triaxial accelerometry system. High-frequency impacts in the tibia were negatively correlated to the knee angle at which the quadriceps peak torque was reached (p = 0.014), and also to the extensibility of the hamstrings and soleus (p = 0.001 and p = 0.023, respectively). The increases of high-frequency impacts in tibia caused by fatigue were positively related to the knee angle at which the hamstrings peak torque was reached (p = 0.001) and to stability after landing (p = 0.007). The attenuation of high-frequency impacts was positively related to hamstrings/quadriceps ratio of strength (p = 0.010) and to stability (p = 0.006). Limiting possible deficits in hamstring and soleus range of motion, improving stability after landing, developing hamstring and quadriceps strength in elongated muscle range, and maintaining a balanced ratio of hamstring/quadriceps strength could help to reduce the injury risk in running. The unique features of college experience make it essential to address escalating mental-health challenges beyond college campuses. In 2010, we launched college-student focused (CSF) care nested within an adult day treatment program in a psychiatric hospital. The CSF care consists of student group therapies, individual consultation services for hospital staff and student-patients, and student-focused mental health guides for patients and families. This study preliminarily examined the clinical impact of CSF care on post-treatment symptoms reduction. In 235 college student-patients admitted to the day program between 2011 July to 2013 January, we assessed the targeted outcomes of the CSF care, using a newly developed CSF questionnaire. Higher levels of CSF care-related outcomes predicted reduced post-treatment depression and anxiety, even after controlling for baseline clinical symptoms and post-treatment skills usage. To examine the neural dynamics of interlingual homophone (ILHP) word processing, we created a word list consisting of Turkish control and Turkish/English ILHP words and asked native Turkish speakers to perform one of the following tasks while their prefrontal activity was recorded with fNIRS: passive listening; word recognition; word memorisation. We found that left DLPFC was active during all tasks. The right DLPFC activity was increased during ILHP word recognition task possibly due to domain-general control networks for conflict monitoring, while the left DLPFC activity was increased for ILHP word memorisation task possibly due to the working memory related processes. These findings suggest that ILHP processing induce a competition between languages in the brain, supporting the BIA+ model and that right DLPFC could be part of the task/decision system of BIA+ model. This study investigated morphological decomposition of Tagalog infixed, prefixed, and suffixed words using the masked priming paradigm. We directly compared morphological priming of infixed, ni- prefixed and -in suffixed words to examine whether infixes are processed similarly to other affixes during early and automatic decomposition. We found significant priming effects for infixed, prefixed, and suffixed words, but no semantic or orthographic similarity priming. Magnitudes of priming effects for infixed and prefixed words were not significantly different, suggesting that decomposition of infixed words was not more costly for Tagalog speakers, contrary to phonological readjustment-based accounts of infixation. This is the first psycholinguistic experiment showing that infixed words are decomposed into morphological units during visual word recognition. We provide evidence that the imperfect edge-alignment of the stem within infixed words does not hamper the early morphological decomposition mechanisms, suggesting that edge-alignment might not be critical to trigger activation of morphological units. This study aimed to generate the health state classification system (HCS) of a condition-specific preference-based measure to capture the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) from the 15-item Myasthenia Gravis Quality of Life Scale (MG-QoL15r). An HCS was derived from the MG-QoL15r in a large sample of 1739 patients with MG based on psychometric analysis, including factor analysis, item response theory analysis, and discussions with experts. Reliability, construct and convergent validity, and item fit of the HCS were further assessed using another sample. The HCS has six dimensions: social activity, hobbies and fun activities, meeting family needs, work performance, mobility, and emotion, and it demonstrates good internal consistency reliability. The unidimensionality of the HCS was confirmed using confirmatory factor analysis. Satisfied convergent validity was supported by a significant association with the 12-item Short Form Survey (SF-12). Based on a solid process of development and consultations with clinical professionals and patients, a valid MG-specific preference-based measure, MGQoL-6D, was developed. Further research will estimate the local preference weight to support the MG-related cost–utility analysis. A new condition-specific health state classification system (HCS) named Myasthenia gravis Quality of Life Scale (MGQoL-6D) is proposed. MGQoL-6D classifies MG health states as a combination of six dimensions with three response levels. The dimensions of the HCS are social activity, hobbies and fun activity, family needs, work performance, mobility, and emotion. The QUAlity of Life Assessment in Spina bifida (QUALAS) for adults (QUALAS-A) evaluates the health-related quality of life (HRQOL), reflecting the condition specificity of adults with spina bifida (SB). The study's purpose was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the QUALAS-A into Korean and validate a Korean-modified version of the QUALAS for Young Adults (QUALAS-YA-Km). Face and content validity were evaluated in the pilot study. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were confirmed in the main study. Factor analysis was performed, and convergent and divergent validity was verified using the World Health Organization Quality of Life assessment instrument abbreviated version (WHOQOL-BREF). Forty-seven adults had myelomeningocele. Five items with low communality were deleted through the factor analysis, and the domains were renamed. The QUALAS-YA-Km showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.73–0.83) and excellent test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient 0.84–0.89). The QUALAS-YA-Km showed good convergent and divergent validity, with weak to strong correlations with the WHOQOL-BREF. Developed with consideration of Korea's cultural characteristics, the QUALAS-YA-Km is a convenient and reliable instrument, with good internal consistency, stability, and construct validity. This can be a useful tool in clinical and research settings for HRQOL optimization in young adults with SB. Guided by the fostering relationships function of patient-centered communication (PCC), the present study utilized a 2 (high/low nonverbal immediacy) x 2 (high/low verbal immediacy) between-subjects experimental design to determine whether physician verbal and nonverbal immediacy influenced participant liking for physician, motivation to process a health message, and recall of the health message. An actor physician delivered a 3–4 minute video-recorded message, diagnosing U.S. adult participants, serving as analogue patients, with a health issue. The results indicated main effects for physician verbal immediacy and nonverbal immediacy on participant liking for physician and motivation such that participants had greater liking for the physician and motivation to do what the physician requested when the physician demonstrated greater verbal and nonverbal immediacy. However, physician verbal and nonverbal immediacy did not influence participantsʻ recall. Physicians should consider displaying verbal and nonverbal immediacy to create a positive impression among patients, and to motivate patients to take steps to improve their health. Research on the pandemic-related burnout has focused on work-related burnout especially among healthcare workers, but not in the general population. To develop a valid and reliable instrument scale to measure pandemic-related burnout in the general population. We took several steps to develop the scale items and achieve content and face validity; literature review, panel of experts, calculation of content validity ratio, and cognitive interviews. We assessed structural and construct validity, and reliability of the COVID-19 burnout scale (COVID-19-BS). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis identified three factors for the COVID-19-BS; emotional exhaustion, physical exhaustion, and exhaustion due to measures against the COVID-19. Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the three factors and the COVID-19-BS ranged from 0.860 to 0.921. Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value was 0.945, and p-value for Bartlett test was <0.001. A significant positive correlation between the three factors and anxiety and depression indicated high concurrent validity. Cohen's kappa ranged from 0.848 to 0.957, while intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.888 to 0.997. Our findings indicate that the final 3-factor model with 13 items of COVID-19-BS is a brief, easy to administer, valid and reliable scale for assessing COVID-19-related burnout in the general public. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of health literacy on patient outcomes in pre-dialysis patients. A semi-experimental study. The study was conducted with 45 intervention and 45 control patients with glomerular filtration rates between 15–44ml/min/1.73m2. The adequate health literacy of the patients in the intervention group increased from 2.2% to 31.1%. Increased health literacy led to a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure values and the severity of symptoms. We developed a 54-item inventory to measure counselors' multicultural and social justice counseling competence. We posited a confirmatory factor analysis model using the structure of the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies and found the fit indices to be within acceptable ranges, indicating overall good model fit. Background: While research pertaining to nonbinary microaggressions has become increasingly comprehensive in recent years, a measure specifically assessing this construct does not yet exist.Aims: The purpose of the present research was to develop and validate the Nonbinary Gender Microaggressions (NBGM) scale, which will allow future researchers to quantitatively examine nonbinary individuals' experiences of microaggressions. Methods and Results: In Study 1 (n = 5), interviews with nonbinary individuals were conducted to explore their microaggressive experiences. The results of this study, as well as findings from previous qualitative research, were used to generate an initial pool of 92 items. In Study 2 (n = 158), a principal component analysis, which was used for item reduction, resulted in the retention of 41 items. In Studies 3 (n = 151) and 4 (n = 266), an exploratory factor analysis yielded a 23-item 5-factor solution (i.e., Negation of Identity [6 items], Inauthenticity [6 items], Deadnaming [4 items], Trans Exclusion [3 items], and Misuse of Gendered Terminology [4 items]), and a confirmatory factor analysis found that this solution demonstrates adequate model fit. Evidence of the measure's scale score reliability, convergent validity, and incremental validity also were provided. Discussion: These findings indicate that, overall, the NBGM scale is a psychometrically sound measure of nonbinary individuals' experiences of microaggressions. Mnemonic representations of complex events are multidimensional, incorporating information about objects and characters, their interactions and their spatial–temporal context. The present study investigated the degree to which detailed verbal information (i.e., dialogues), as well as semantic and spatiotemporal (i.e., "what", "where", and "when") elements of episodic memories for movies, are forgotten over the course of a week. Moreover, we tested whether the amount of dimension-specific forgetting differed as a function of the participant's age. In a mixed design, younger and middle-aged participants were asked to watch a ∼90 min movie and provide yes/no answers to detailed questions about different dimensions of the presented material after 1, 3 days, and 1 week. The results indicate that memory decay mainly affects the verbal dimension, both in terms of response accuracy and confidence. Instead, detailed information about objects/characters' features and spatiotemporal context seems to be relatively preserved, despite a general decrease in response confidence. Furthermore, younger adults were in general more accurate and confident than middle-aged participants, although, again, the verbal dimension exhibited a significant age-related difference. Autobiographical reasoning is a process by which an individual creates a coherent life account. The degree of coherence in autobiographical reasoning has been related to psychological health correlates such as depression and self-esteem in previous studies, but with inconsistent findings. Similarly, the basic psychological processes required to achieve coherence have been previously studied with regard to intelligence, but infrequently, and also with mixed findings. In the present study, we first developed and evaluated a German version of the Awareness of Narrative Identity Questionnaire (ANIQ) as an established measure of self-reported coherence. Second, we tested for cognitive dependencies on intelligence and memory indices. Third, we analysed its associations with psychological health correlates. We assessed a sample of 272 participants and thereof 189 participants again two-weeks later. Results supported the assumptions of the German ANIQ's psychometric qualities (factor structure, test-retest reliability, invariance) and validity (with regard to self-consciousness, self-concept clarity, and written accounts of personal turning points). We found coherence to be independent of intelligence and verbal memory, but partially dependent on figural memory. Coherence was related to depression, positivity, self-esteem, and self-esteem stability, but not to anxiety, substantiating its salutogenic effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

However, according to most current accounts of directed forgetting, engaging in survival processing should not have enhanced the directed forgetting effect but rather should not have impacted the directed forgetting effect. In the present study, we further investigated how survival processing impacts directed forgetting using both the list (Experiment 1) and item method of directed forgetting (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, we did not replicate the findings of (Parker, A., Parkin, A., & Dagnall, N. (2021). Effects of survival processing on list method directed forgetting. Memory (Hove, England), 29(5), 645–661) – that the directed forgetting effect is enhanced when engaging in survival processing. Rather, we demonstrated that making survival ratings and moving ratings yielded a similar cost of directed forgetting for List 1 items. In Experiment 2, survival processing provided an overall memory benefit (but not when recalling to-be-remembered and to-be-forgotten items in separate recall tests) but did not differentially impact to-be-remembered and to-be-forgotten words. Most everyday experiences are multisensory, and all senses can trigger the conscious re-experience of unique personal events embedded in their specific spatio-temporal context. Yet, little is known about how a cue's sensory modality influences episodic memory, and which step of this process is impacted. This study investigated recognition and episodic memory across olfactory, auditory and visual sensory modalities in a laboratory-ecological task using a non-immersive virtual reality device. At encoding, participants freely and actively explored unique and rich episodes in a three-room house where boxes delivered odours, musical pieces and pictures of face. At retrieval, participants were presented with modality-specific memory cues and were told to 1) recognise encoded cues among distractors and, 2) go to the room and select the box in which they encountered them at encoding. Memory performance and response times revealed that music and faces outperformed odours in recognition memory, but that odours and faces outperformed music in evoking encoding context. Interestingly, correct recognition of music and faces was accompanied by more profound inspirations than correct rejection. By directly comparing memory performance across sensory modalities, our study demonstrated that despite limited recognition, odours are powerful cues to evoke specific episodic memory retrieval. Negative, ableist discourse challenging the rights of people with Down syndrome to receive support services and even to be born regularly arise on social media. This disability community has retaliated against such hate speech with resistance narratives that promote the value of people with Down syndrome, with few other recourses available. This article explores online free speech versus ableism in Australia through a major case study of 60 Minutes Australia Facebook discussions. Analysis identifies types of ableism expressed, types of harm caused and dimensions of grassroots responses. Using Timothy Garton Ash's 2016 work Free Speech as a basis for contemporary analysis, we discuss: to what extent should harmful and offensive comments directed at vulnerable populations be tolerated in the name of free speech; might negative, ableist discourse contribute to any social good; and what mechanisms beyond grassroots resistance narratives might effectively respond to harmful, online ableist discourses. The article looks at whether the right to free speech is more important than the harmful effects of online hate speech towards people with Down syndrome. We use the ideas in a book on Free Speech by Timothy Garton Ash to think about whether online hate speech should be allowed or silenced. Our analysis is based on a case study of Facebook discussion threads from a 60 Minutes Australia television segment. People in the disability community speaking up to create resistance narratives is the main way that online disability hate speech is challenged. Facial perception involves several brain areas: occipital to process visual stimuli, temporal to regulate emotions, and frontal and parietal to activate attention. Emotional processing relates to theta and delta bands in the temporal and frontal areas. We used a longitudinal design with twelve women to investigate whether the absolute power (AP) of areas involved in face perception changed in response to masculinized and feminized men's faces during the LFP and LP. Results show that the perception of masculinized faces, when compared with feminized faces, modified the AP of delta in the occipital area; the AP of delta, theta, and alpha in the temporal area; and the AP of delta, alpha, and beta in the frontal and parietal areas during the LFP, but not the LP. Furthermore, AP was greater for masculinized faces during the LFP than during the LP. Two studies examine the circumstances in which singletons, defined by unique feature-change rate, guide attention in visual search. Participants searched for a static vertical/horizontal white target bar amidst tilted distractors. Bars were contained inside surround shapes with periodically oscillating features. In Experiment 1, displays consisted of surrounds with abrupt (discrete) or continuous (smooth) changes between two values (red–blue, square–diamond). For discrete displays, target surrounds did not guide attention when uniquely faster-oscillating than distractor surrounds, but did in smooth displays. For unique-slow oscillating target surrounds, the opposite guidance pattern was found across discrete and smooth displays. In Experiment 2, displays had a mixture of discrete and smooth surrounds. Here, only unique slow-oscillating discrete surrounds guided attention. No guidance was found for smooth surrounds. Findings suggest that faster oscillations are masked by higher-frequency harmonic signals from slower changing discrete items, and there is attentional prioritization of discrete over smooth changes. The gaze cuing effect refers to the finding that participants are faster to respond to a stimulus preceded by a face gazing towards the stimulus location compared to when a stimulus is preceded by a face gazing away from the stimulus location. This effect is found even when the gaze direction is not informative of the upcoming stimulus location, suggesting the operation of a fast, reflexive process that draws attention. However, accumulating evidence suggests that this gaze cuing effect is modulated by additional contextual features including characteristics of the face stimulus. In the current set of experiments, we sought to test whether the attractiveness of the face cue is one such factor. Across three experiments, we found no evidence that attractiveness impacts the gaze cuing effect. Objectives: Engagement with music (i.e. listening, moving to the beat, joining in, performance) is documented to enhance cognition, mood, socialization, and a host of other wellness indicators in advancing age. A number of comprehensive scales measure this engagement, but a brief, accessible scale designed for general use with older adults is lacking. This project was undertaken to create and offer preliminary validation of the 7-item Music in Aging Wellness Scale (MAWS). Method: Seven items reflecting aspects of music engagement (ME) were developed by expert opinion (e.g. 'I always tap my foot or sway my body to good music') for completion on a 1–7, strongly disagree to strongly agree, Likert scale. These were subject to exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (n = 349 cases) along with a set of six experimental items on ageism. It was hypothesized these items would cluster by content, thus showing separation into distinct factors. Results: This was achieved and the resulting measure showed sound internal consistency (0.82), split-half reliability (0.71), and one-year test–retest (0.83). The MAWS total score was found to correlate significantly in expected directions with common gerontological measures. High scorers reported less depression, more mastery, less loneliness, and larger social networks. No association was found for worry-based anxiety and self-reported cognitive decline. Conclusion: This preliminary reliability and validity study suggests that the MAWS may be an appropriate outcome and tracking measure for older adults involved in music-wellness interventions. Purpose: The aims of the present study were twofold: first, to investigate reading and screen time habits in a large clinical sample of caregivers of children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) before and after an 8 week intervention focussed on daily joint book reading and, second, to capture the caregivers' experiences of the activity. Method: Preschool aged children with SLCN and their caregivers were consecutively recruited during their first visit to the department of Speech and Language Pathology, Gävle County Hospital, Sweden. They participated in a survey-based interview before and after receiving an intervention with recommendations of at least 10 minutes of daily book reading with an interactional focus, as an add-on to ordinary speech-language pathology services. The results were analysed using descriptive statistics of the answers to the questions in the interview, as well as a thematic analysis of free-text comments. Result: The 135 families who participated in the pre-intervention interview survey reported variable reading frequency and screen time. The post-intervention interview survey was completed by 107 families. The results demonstrated significant increases in reading frequency and reading time, and a significant decrease in screen time per day. Caregivers also reported positive experiences of the daily interactive book reading. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that a speech-language pathologist-(SLP) managed, caregiver-led book reading intervention is feasible and might have a positive impact on reading, other factors related to reading, and screen time in families of children with SLCN. This study examined how toddler looking to a discourse referent is mediated by the information status of the referent and the pitch contour of the referring expression. Eighteen-month-olds saw a short discourse of three sets of images with the proportion of looking time to a target analyzed during the final image. At test, the information status of the referent was either new or given and the referring expression was presented with one of three pitch contours (flat f0, monotonal (~H*), or bitonal (~L+H*)). In Experiment 1, toddlers looked reliably longer to a target referent when it was either new to the discourse or carried a non-flat pitch contour. In Experiment 2, the referring expression was removed to observe effects of information status alone on looking to a target referent. Toddlers looked significantly longer to a target when it was new versus given. More fine-grained time course analyses of eye movements revealed differences in the speed and duration of fixation to a target. Overall, the experiments show that discourse reference in toddlers is mediated by the presence of newness and pitch contours, even in the case of given information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The clothing fabric and skin interact continuously across the many regions of users′ bodies during wear, which can lead to both physical skin damage and discomfort. Therefore, this investigation aimed to explore the regional differences in skin friction, tactile perception, and sensitivity in both females and males during the skin-textile interaction. The static and dynamic friction coefficient and textile perception (texture, stickiness, pleasantness, and discomfort) were measured across the 36 selected testing body areas by using a friction measurement device. The results revealed there was a significant difference in skin friction, tactile perceptions, and sensitivity across the various body regions. The anterior neck had the highest skin friction in both females and males, and participants generally rated higher texture perception in their anterior aspects compared to posterior and lateral regions. There was no significant difference in skin friction, tactile perception ratings, and sensitivity between females and males. To ensure high qualification standards in medical institutions, a questionnaire has been developed to evaluate the postgraduate medical education in Switzerland. This article describes the development and longitudinal analysis of a questionnaire using eight scales to assess the quality of postgraduate medical education. The questionnaire has been administered to all residents every year since 2003. In 2020, 8,745 residents returned the questionnaire, resulting in a response rate of 70%. In addition, a survey is conducted annually among the directors of medical institutions. We present results of the directors' survey and the resident evaluation from 2020, as well as longitudinal data over 16 years. The mean values of the eight scales remained stable or increased slightly over the years. The decision-making culture scale is generally rated best by the residents, while the evidence-based medicine scale is rated as the least good. The most important drivers of residents' satisfaction with a training site are the work environment and leadership culture scales. The directors perceive the evaluation to be fair and useful. The questionnaire represents a reliable and useful tool for the quality control in postgraduate medical training. In some cultures, giving birth and marriage adds value to women, while being single can cause women to be exposed to social and individual pressures. There are currently no instruments available in the literature for assessing how pressure women feel to be married and have children. This study aimed to develop the Marriage and Fertility Pressure Scale (PSMF) by measuring the marriage and fertility pressure on single women. The study contacted 360 single women via women's health and social groups on social networking sites. Cronbach's alpha values of the marriage pressure and fertility pressure were 0.94 and 0.82, respectively. The factor analysis of the marriage and fertility pressure subscales revealed a six-dimensional structure explaining 59.26 percent and 60.54 percent of the total variance, respectively. In conclusion, this study was important in developing a highly reliable and valid PSMF measurement tool to measure the pressure on women in terms of marriage and fertility. The widespread use of the scale in public health research will increase the sensitivity and awareness of the people about the pressure on single women. Moreover, this scale will contribute to the evaluation of the social and individual pressure differences in the research to be carried out on marriage and childbirth between societies. Language comprehension proceeds at a very fast pace. It is argued that context influences the speed of language comprehension by providing informative cues. How syntactic contextual information influences the processing of incoming words is, however, less known. Here we employed a masked syntactic priming paradigm in four behavioural experiments in the German language to test whether masked primes automatically influence the categorisation of nouns and verbs. We found robust syntactic priming effects with masked primes but only when verbs were morpho-syntactically marked. Furthermore, we found that, compared to baseline, primes slow down target categorisation when the relationship between prime and target is syntactically incorrect, rather than speeding it up when the relationship is syntactically correct. This argues in favour of an inhibitory nature of syntactic priming. Overall, the data indicate that humans automatically extract syntactic features from the context to guide the analysis of incoming words during online language processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To assess the intra- and inter-rater reliability motor and sensory functioning, balance, joint range of motion and joint pain subscales of the Italian Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) Upper Extremity (FMA-UE) and Lower Extremity (FMA-LE) at the item- subtotal- and total-level in patients with sub-acute stroke. The FMA was administered to 60 patients with sub-acute stroke (mean age ± SD = 75.4 ± 10.7 years; 58.3% men) and independently rated by two physiotherapists on two consecutive days. Intra- and inter-reliability was studied by a rank-based statistical method for paired ordinal data to detect any systematic or random disagreement. The item-level intra- and inter-rater reliability was satisfactory (>70%). Reliability level >70% was achieved at subscale and total score level when one- or two-points difference was considered. Systematic disagreements were reported for five items of the FMA-UE, but not for FMA-LE. The Italian version of the FMA showed to be a reliable instrument that can therefore be recommended for clinical and research purposes. The FMA is the gold standard for assessing stroke patients' sensorimotor impairment worldwide. The Italian Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Upper Extremity (FMA-UE) and Lower Extremity (FMA-LE) is substantially reliable within and between two raters at the item, subtotal, and total score level in patients with sub-acute stroke. Massive rural-to-urban migration in China has a significant impact on informal caregiving arrangements among Chinese older adults. To stimulate research on the intersection of migration and caregiving, we conducted an inventory of longitudinal aging survey datasets from mainland China. Large publicly available datasets that included measures related to migration and caregiving were searched and reviewed for eligibility. Key characteristics of each dataset, including study design, sample size, and measures, were extracted. Seven eligible datasets were identified, and five included nationally representative samples. Measures for migration varied across datasets. Some datasets included information on the migration history of older adults, whereas others focused on the migration of adult children. Similarly, caregiving was measured using different questions in each dataset. Caregiving activities were assessed with regard to their type, source, and amount. Health care systems expect primary care clinicians to manage panels of patients and improve population health, yet few have been trained to do so. An interprofessional panel management (PM) curriculum is one possible strategy to address this training gap and supply future primary care practices with clinicians and teams prepared to work together to improve the health of individual patients and populations. This paper describes a Veterans Administration (VA) sponsored multi-site interprofessional PM curriculum development effort. Five VA Centers of Excellence in Primary Care Education collaborated to identify a common set of interprofessionally relevant desired learning outcomes (DLOs) for the PM and to develop assessment instruments for monitoring trainees' PM learning. Authors cataloged teaching and learning activities across sites. Results from pilot testing were systematically discussed leading to iterative revisions of curricular elements. Authors completed a retrospective self-assessment of curriculum implementation for the academic year 2015–16 using a 5-point scale: contemplation (score = 0), pilot (1), action (2), maintenance (3), and embedded (4). Implementation scores were analyzed using descriptive statistics. DLOs were organized into five categories (individual patients, populations, guidelines/measures, teamwork, and improvement) along with a developmental continuum and mapped to program competencies. Instruction and implementation varied across sites based on resources and priorities. Between 2015 and 2016, 159 trainees (internal medicine residents, nurse practitioner students and residents, pharmacy residents, and psychology post-doctoral fellows) participated in the PM curriculum. Curriculum implementation scores for guidelines/measures and improvement DLOs were similar for all trainees; scores for individual patients, populations, and teamwork DLOs were more advanced for nurse practitioner and physician trainees. In conclusion, collaboratively identified DLOs for PM guided development of assessment instruments and instructional approaches for panel management activities in interprofessional teams. In the context of disability, acceptance of disability is acceptance of loss, and it is a process of value changes. Although social support such as family support has been found to be significantly correlated with disability adjustment, observation on the literature related to conceptualisation and scales on self-acceptance of people with disabilities hardly investigated family support in understanding the concept of self-acceptance of people with disabilities. In order to develop the Self-Acceptance Scale for People with Physical Disabilities (SAS-PD), this study was implemented based on the sequential exploratory design. The scale was administered on 247 persons with physical disabilities. It begins with qualitative data collection and analysis, followed up by a quantitative research method. Using exploratory factor analysis, we identified six factors, namely social stigma, enlargement, asset value, containment of disability effect, family support and body acceptance. Fifty-one items represented all these factors. The SAS-PD scale is suggested to be used for counsellor's assessment on people with physical disability, as well as profile building before participation in any training programme. Existing TBI misconception measures are critiqued for failing to measure postinjury social experiences. This study developed a social subscale for the Common Misconceptions about TBI (CM-TBI) questionnaire for use in the general public. Seven experts independently review items drawn from the literature. Shortlisted items were administered online to 158 adults (aged ≥18 years; 51% postschool educated; 60% no TBI experience), the CM-TBI, and a measure of construct validity (a published TBI-adaptation of the Community Attitudes Towards the Mentally Ill; CAMI-TBI). One week later, the new items were redeployed (n = 46). Expert review and iterative correlations identified a 10-item social subscale (internal consistency, test-retest reliability, α's>.80). When added to the CM-TBI (ie. CM-TBI-II), the internal consistency was.71. The social subscale was significantly correlated with CAMI-TBI measures (p's <.05, r's >.3). There was no significant difference on the social subscale for education subgroups (school vs post-school, p = 0.056) or previous TBI experience; but there was a difference for the CM-TBI-II (post-school>school; Cohen's d = 7.83, large effect). This study found strong preliminary psychometric support for a new social subscale, administered as the CM-TBI-II. This subscale shows promise as a measure of misconceptions about social functioning post-TBI. The self-reported perception of bodily sensations is assumed predictive for health and disease. Existing questionnaires mostly focus on aversive sensations, and associated emotions and cognitions, which potentially confounds associations between interoception and illness. Therefore, we developed the Three-domain Interoceptive Sensations Questionnaire (THISQ), assessing self-reported perception of neutral respiratory, cardiac, and gastroesophageal sensations. Using cross-sectional surveys, we developed and validated the THISQ. In Sample 1 (n = 357), a pool of 28 Dutch items was subjected to exploratory factor analysis. Eighteen items with a primary factor loading >.40 were retained for confirmatory factor analysis in Sample 2 (n = 374) and Sample 3 (n = 484) for the validation of the Dutch and English questionnaire, respectively. Analyses supported the 3-factor solution: cardiorespiratory activation, cardiorespiratory deactivation, and gastroesophageal sensations. Scales showed acceptable to good internal consistency. Convergent validity was confirmed by significant medium associations between THISQ scores and other self-report measures of interoception. Divergent validity was supported by non-significant or small associations with measures of negative affectivity and symptom-related anxiety. Our findings suggest that the Dutch and English THISQs are valid and reliable self-report measures of interoception, which could advance our understanding of interoceptive processes in health and disease. Cycling time trial (TT) protocols have been shown to be reliable in trained cyclists, but their reproducibility in lesser-trained individuals is unknown. This study examined the reliability of a self-paced 15-minute cycling TT in recreationally active individuals. Twelve recreationally active males (age 27 ± 3 y; body mass 75.2 ± 8.9 kg; $${\dot{\rm{V}}}$$ V ˙ O2peak = 51.10 ± 7.53 ml∙kg∙min−1) completed a $${\dot{\rm{V}}}$$ V ˙ O2peak test and four experimental trials, separated by > 48 h. Experimental trials consisted of 10 min cycling at 60% Wmax, followed by a self-paced 15-min TT. Heart rate and work done were recorded every 5 min during the TT; and coefficient of variation (CV) was calculated. Work done was not different (P = 0.706) between trials (193.2 ± 45.3 kJ; 193.2 ± 43.5 kJ; 192.0 ± 42.3 kJ; 193.9 ± 42.8 kJ). Within participant CV ranged from 0.5–4.9% for the four TTs, with a mean CV of 2.1%. Mean CV decreased from 2.0% (range 0.1–5.0%) for the first two TTs to 1.7% (range 0.2–5.6%) for the second and third TTs, and further decreased to 1.0% (range 0.2–1.8%) for the third and fourth TTs. In reward-based learning and value-directed remembering, many different value structures for the to-be-remembered information have been used by researchers. I was interested in whether different scoring structures used in a value-directed remembering task impact measures of memory selectivity. Participants studied lists of words paired with point values and some lists included words paired with values ranging from 1 to 20, 1 to 10 (repeating twice), either a high value (10 points) or a low value (1 point), and either a high value (10 points), a medium value (5 points) or a low value (1 point). Results suggest that (1) in tests of free recall, if using a continuous value scale, the range of values matters in terms of selective memory, (2) analysing the selectivity index can yield different results than modelling item-level recall using point values (and the latter may be a preferable approach), (3) measures of selectivity using different value structures may lack construct validity when testing memory via recognition tests, and (4) the effect of value on memory is much larger on recall than recognition tests. Thus, I suggest that researchers carefully consider and justify the value structure used when examining selective memory for valuable information in list learning tasks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on the effect of L-arginine supplementation on exercise performance is still inconsistent and its influence on single-bout swimming performance has not been investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess if one-week L-arginine supplementation would enhance 200-m freestyle swimming performance in trained/developmental (regularly training ∼3 times per week with a purpose to compete) male swimmers. In a randomized, cross-over, double-blind design, 8 trained/developmental male swimmers (age 25 ± 5 years; mean ± SD) completed 200-m freestyle swimming time-trial on 3 separate occasions: a control trial; and after 2 separate 7-d supplementation periods, with a daily dose of either 8 g/d of L-arginine or placebo trials. Blood lactate concentration was measured immediately post time-trial swimming. Completion time of the 200-m freestyle swimming time-trial did not differ significantly (F = 4.55; P = 0.060; ŋp2 = 0.394) between control (149.40 ± 9.88 s), L-arginine (146.02 ± 10.34 s) and placebo trials (147.58 ± 10.86 s). There was no statistically significant difference in post time-trial swimming blood lactate concentration between trials (control: 11.2 ± 2.7; L-arginine: 13.1 ± 1.8; Placebo: 12.2 ± 2.7, F = 3.52; P = 0.058; ŋp2 = 0.335). One-week of supplementation with 8 g/d of L-arginine, had no ergogenic effect on middle-distance (200-m), freestyle swimming performance in trained/developmental male swimmers. We examined how well faces can be recognized despite substantial age-related changes, using three behavioural experiments plus Mileva et al.'s (2020, Facial identity across the lifespan. Cognitive Psychology, 116, 101260) PCA + LDA computational model of face recognition. Participants and the model were trained on a set of faces at one age (with each facial identity depicted in multiple images) and tested on their ability to recognize those individuals in images taken at a different age. The younger images were aged 20–30 years and the older images were either 20 or 40 years older. The computational model showed high accuracy, but it performed better if faces were learnt in their younger versions and testing was with the older images than vice versa. The humans did not show this age-direction effect. Although their recognition of faces across either a 20- or 40- year age gap was poor, it was significantly above chance, suggesting that we can extract identity diagnostic information despite substantial changes in outward appearance. Past studies argued that the attentional capture by threats is hard to inhibit. When using threats as task-irrelevant stimuli, this effect can deteriorate performance on the primary task. Whether attentional capture is driven by affective information (threat) or visual features (shape) is still debated. Here we aimed to investigate the role of threat value and shape in modulating attentional resources by conducting two experiments (total N = 87). Participants engaged in a semantic vigilance task responding to masked words appearing at the centre of the screen while ignoring threat-relevant (threatening or visually similar but nonthreatening) and neutral control distractor images placed at different distances from the target word. We found no performance difference between participants exposed to threat-related stimuli via affective or shape features. Moreover, while performance decreased when a neutral distractor appeared close (compared to further away) to the target word, stimulus eccentricity had no effect when the distractor (irrespective of the conveying feature) was threat relevant. Our findings are in line with previous studies showing an initial capture of attention by threat-relevant information but that this negative effect is compensated by an increase in arousal. Executive functions have both direct and indirect effects on reading comprehension. Previous studies have shown that people with hearing loss (HL) perform poorly on executive functions and reading comprehension tasks. This scoping review explored the current state of the literature relating executive function and reading comprehension in children and adolescents with cochlear implants. Searches were carried out in five databases to identify empirical studies related to executive functions, reading comprehension, and children and/or adolescents with cochlear implants. All results were analysed by peer-reviewers. A systematic search only found four studies in the field. We carried out our narrative review of these papers, with a focus on the mediating role of oral language on the relationship between executive functions and reading comprehension. The Stroke Upper Limb Capacity Scale (SULCS) is a clinically useful measure of upper-limb (UL) capacity, which assesses both basic and advanced capacities. To examine the reliability, construct validity, and interpretability of the SULCS-Brazil with community-dwelling individuals with stroke. The SULCS-Brazil and measures of impairment (handgrip strength and motor function of the paretic UL), capacity (manual and digital dexterities), and performance were applied during the first session, to establish construct validity (80 patients). The SULCS-Brazil was applied again during a second session (a sub-set of 30 patients), to investigate test–retest reliability. Test–retest reliability was evaluated using kappa statistics (k) for the individual items, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for the total scores, standard error of measurement (SEM), minimal detectable change (MDC), and Bland-Altman plot. For the evaluation of construct validity, pre-defined hypotheses were created to estimate the strength of the correlations between the SULCS-Brazil scores and established measures of UL function, using Spearman correlation coefficients. Interpretability was investigated by evaluating both ceiling/ floor effects. High level of agreement was found between the SUCLS-Brazil total scores obtained on both applications (ICC = 0.98; 95%CI:0.96–0.99) and 80% of the individual items had almost perfect agreement (k= 0.81–1.0). The SEM (0.46) and the MDC (1.27) showed clinically acceptable values. All pre-defined hypotheses were confirmed, indicating adequate construct validity of the SULCS-Brazil. Objectives. Workplace inspection supports improving the working environment. Changes in workplaces following inspections are construed as the inspection's outcome. This study aimed to develop a tool for inspection performance assessment (TIPA) based on identified inspection prerequisites and evaluate the tool's appropriateness for performance assessment. Methods. Occupational safety and health experts ranked the prerequisites for effective inspection performance, based on their experiences and perception of importance of the prerequisites. The outcome formed the basis for weighting and assignment of values to the prerequisite subgoals. An assessment tool interface, with which inspectors can assess their workplace inspection performance was designed. Inspectors from different national authorities provided feedback on the tool's appropriateness for measuring inspection performance. Results. Results showed much agreement between the inspectors. A five-level performance consideration based on inspection performance index attained was implemented. High average ratings for the test criteria were obtained, with high inter-rater consistency, and reliability. Conclusion. TIPA provides a systematic inspection performance quantification supporting inspectors' self-actualization, improving performance. Furthermore, the tool's generality allows for use irrespective of the inspection area without affecting inspection areas' specificity adjustments. Blunting of the sleep-related dip in blood pressure (BP) has been linked to numerous cardiovascular outcomes including myocardial infarction. Blunting of BP dipping occurs during night shift work and previous research suggest that a 60-min or longer on-shift nap is needed to restore normal/healthy BP dipping. We sought to determine the effect of different durations of napping on BP during and following simulated night shifts. We hypothesized that the greatest benefit in terms of restoration of normal BP dipping during night shift work would be observed during a longer duration nap versus a shorter nap opportunity. We used a randomized crossover laboratory-based study design. Participants consented to complete three separate 72-hr conditions that included a 12-hr simulated night shift. Nap conditions included a 30-min and 2-hr nap compared to a no-nap condition. Ambulatory BP monitoring was assessed hourly and every 10-30 mins during in-lab naps. Blunted BP dipping during in-lab naps was the primary outcome. Goal enrollment of 25 (35 with attrition) provided 80% power to detect a mean difference of 5 mmHg in BP between nap conditions. Of the 58 screened, 28 were consented, and 26 completed all three 72-hr conditions. More than half (53.6%) were female. Mean age was 24.4 years (SD7.2). Most (85.7%) were certified as emergency medical technicians or paramedics. The mean percentage dip in systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) did not differ between the 30-min and 2-hr nap conditions (p > 0.05), yet a greater proportion of participants experienced a 10-20% dip in SBP or DBP during the 2-hr nap versus the 30-min nap (p < 0.05). For every additional minute of total sleep during the 30-min nap, the percentage of SBP dip improved by 0.60%, and the percentage of DBP dip improved by 0.68% (p < 0.05). These improvements approximate to a 6% per minute relative advancement toward normal/healthy BP dipping. Restoration of a normal/healthy dip in BP is achievable during short and long duration nap opportunities during simulated night shift work.
