Introduction: Cognitive assessments, such as the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (ACE-III) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), have been modified for administration using tablet computers. While this offers important advantages for practice, it may also threaten the test validity. The current study sought to test whether administering visuospatial and writing tests using a tablet (finger or stylus drawing), would demonstrate equivalence to traditional pencil and paper administration on ACEmobile. Method: This study recruited 26 participants with Alzheimer's disease and 23 healthy older adults. Most participants had low familiarity with using a tablet computer. Participants completed ACEmobile in its entirety, after which they repeated the infinity loops, cube, and clock drawing and sentence writing tests by drawing with a stylus and their finger onto an iPad. Performance on the drawing and writing tests using a stylus, finger, and pencil were compared. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed between the finger and pencil administration on the ACEmobile, with participants performing worse on the finger drawing trials. Differences in scores were most apparent on the sentence writing task. In contrast, no statistical differences were observed between the pencil and stylus administration. Discussion: The findings of this pilot study have important implications for clinical neuropsychology and demonstrate that administering ACEmobile drawing tests with finger drawing is invalid. However, due to the small sample size, a lack of counterbalancing and the narrow range of scores of the dependent variable, we are unable to confidently interpret the validity of stylus drawing. Objectives: The clock drawing test (CDT) is a widely used cognitive screening test. However, CDT performance is affected by education. This study examined an alternative, the Papadum test, designed for people with low levels of education/literacy. The association between education and test performance, correlation between CDT and Papadum test, and diagnostic accuracy of both CDT and Papadum tests were examined. Method: 89 healthy literate adults and 59 literate adults (all Bengali speaking) with a diagnosis of mild-moderate dementia from hospitals in Kolkata, India undertook the CDT and the Papadum test. Results: Education had a significant association with the CDT but not with the Papadum test. Across the whole sample there was a significant correlation between CDT and Papadum, but not within separate groups of healthy controls and patients. Diagnostic accuracy for the Papadum test was similar to that for CDT. Conclusions: Results highlight the strong influence that education has on CDT performance indicating that it is not suitable for those with low levels of literacy. The Papadum test could provide a viable alternative as a screening tool to the CDT for use with people who are illiterate or have low levels of education. Further validation studies are required. Caring for a relative with dementia can be extremely challenging especially when someone presents with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). The training provided to informal carers is varied and inconsistent. Group-based training programmes are often prescribed but their impact on care-recipient wellbeing and symptomology is yet to be well established. This review synthesises the literature on consensus, themes and effectiveness of informal-carer, group-based educational training programmes on BPSD symptoms. Ten papers were included of which very few considered BPSD outcomes as their primary aim of investigation. Methodological and theoretical approaches across the empirical papers varied considerably. Generally, studies of higher quality and with some positive results on BPSD outcomes tended to incorporate teaching on structured problem-solving skills. Studies measuring for longer term changes also tended to conclude more beneficial outcomes. The length and duration of groups and the group-sizes appeared inconsequential to BPSD outcomes. The empirical evidence is weak for carer group interventions in the management of BPSD. Practice reasons for this are discussed. The drive towards living well with dementia has resulted in a growing recognition of the value of community-based participatory arts activities. This review aimed to explore their overall impact and holistic benefits for people with early to moderate stages of dementia. Using a scoping review methodology and thematic analysis, this review explored relevant literature published between 2008 and 2019. 26 published papers were identified, comprising visual arts, literary arts, comedy, music and dance. The key themes included person-centred, in-the-moment approaches; participation and communication; attention and cognition; social cohesion and relationships; and the role of space, place and objects. There is strong evidence in support of using participatory arts for dementia, regardless of art form. In-the-moment and person-centred approaches were deemed impactful. Further research is needed to explore the importance of setting, material culture and the methodological or theoretical perspectives in participatory arts and dementia research. This scoping review aims to examine the caregiving experiences of Korean American caregivers of persons with dementia. A comprehensive electronic search was conducted within 5 databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Embase, PsycINFO-ProQuest) for papers published from 01/01/00 −01/24/22. Seventeen articles met the inclusion criteria. Thematic analysis was used to summarize key findings from these papers. Most Korean American dementia caregivers were immigrants and wives/daughters/daughters-in-law. Two themes emerged: 1) how Korean American caregivers perceived their caregiving experiences, and 2) how Korean American caregivers perceived their caregiving support services. Korean American caregivers often experience poor mental health and burden. Social support and familism were found to be two of the most important factors that determine their attitudes toward caregiving. Most reported barriers to utilizing public services. Challenges in finding culturally relevant resources were common. Dementia caregiving is a significant public health problem facing Korean Americans. Recommendations for future research are provided. We aimed to identify assistive technologies that are promising for addressing loneliness in people living with dementia in long-term care. A scoping review was conducted. EBSCO, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and ProQuest were searched from 2000 to 2020. The included studies were selected by three independent researchers and summarised, compared, and categorized according to technology type. Publications were eligible for inclusion when they reported on psychosocial interventions aiming to reduce loneliness and/or social isolation in people with dementia in long-term care settings. Twenty-four papers were included (20 original research papers and four reviews). Most studies were conducted in Australia and Europe. The studies aimed to investigate two different types of assistive technology: social robots, and multimedia computer systems. Most studies focussed on behaviour, engagement, and mood as primary outcomes. Only one study directly aimed to alleviate loneliness. Even though only one study addressed loneliness directly, it became clear that assistive technologies used to apply psychosocial interventions have the potential to impact loneliness in people with dementia in long-term care. However, it remains unclear why loneliness was not included as an outcome and how loneliness could become a key outcome in evaluating assistive technologies. Loneliness among older adults is associated with health risks, such as the development of dementia, depression, and increased mortality. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) technologies have been studied to address loneliness for older adults; however people with dementia are often excluded from such studies. This diverse group of technologies is shown to have a promising impact on outcomes, such as social engagement, quality of life, and mood, but loneliness was studied less often. Considerable recent research has focused on loneliness and its effects on mental and physical health at all ages. This paper addresses loneliness among people living with dementia and those who love and care for them. By adopting a new culture of congregational care and becoming "dementia friendly", faith communities can help to overcome the dementia stigma that often results in loss of relationships and increases in loneliness. Understandings of tourists' contemporary information needs that emphasize spontaneous travel decision-making and tourism as an exclusively pleasurable experience do not account for the contexts of people with dementia and their carers, for whom travelling requires unique adaptations. Through netnography in four online fora, this paper investigates the hitherto under-researched travel information needs of informal carers of people living with dementia. The qualitative data highlights the breadth of pre-travel information needs and their strong emotional dimensions both when carers plan to travel with and without the person with dementia for whom they care. Our analysis uncovers the complex, interdependent nature of travel-related information queries which refer not only to narrow tourism themes but also to health, healthcare and social policy. This exploratory paper concludes with recommendations for addressing the travel information needs of this globally growing category of people, wherein collaboration across destinations, tourism and hospitality industries, the healthcare sector and other stakeholders may be required. Aims: To investigate the feasibility and acceptability of a serious mobile-game intervention on older adults' engagement, affect, and cognitive function. Methods: In this single-subject design, twenty older adults, six of whom living with dementia, participated in a 16-session mobile-game intervention. Before and after the intervention, participants had sessions involving traditional paper-based cognitive activities. Engagement and affect were measured in each session. Cognitive measures were administered before and after the intervention. Acceptability was explored through interviews. Results: After the intervention, there was a statistically significant increase in engagement in 37% of participants, and in affect in 21% of participants. Participants preferred the mobile games to the paper-based activities. Cognitive measures showed improvement in four participants with dementia. Conclusions: Although not conclusive, participants experienced higher levels of engagement and positive affect while playing the mobile games compared to paper-based activities. With a lack of existing comprehensive reviews, the aim of this mixed-method systematic review was to synthesise the evidence on the early impacts of the pandemic on unpaid dementia carers across the globe. This review was registered on PROSPERO [CDR42021248050]. PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science were searched from 2020 to July 2021. Studies were included if they reported on the different impacts of the pandemic on unpaid dementia carers aged 18+, with papers published in English, German, Polish, or Spanish. A number of research team members were involved in the selection of studies following PRISMA guidance. Thirty-six studies (43 papers) from 18 countries reported on the early impact of the pandemic on unpaid dementia carers. Impacts were noted on accessing care and support; carer burden; and well-being. Studies found that carers had limited access to care and support services, increased workload, enhanced feelings of social isolation, and reduced wellbeing. Specifically, reductions in access to care and support increased carer's unpaid caring tasks, removing any opportunities for temporary respite, and thus further increasing carer burden and reducing mental well-being in many. The needs of unpaid dementia carers appear to have increased during the pandemic, without adequate support provided. Policy initiatives need to enable better mental health support and formal care provision for unpaid carers and their relatives with dementia, whilst future research needs to explore the long-term implications of carer needs in light of care home restrictions and care delivery. Information and Communication Technologies have transformed our lives in different social areas, facilitating interpersonal relationships thanks to technological tools. In the specific case of people with disabilities, Assistive Technologies (ATs) break down barriers and increase opportunities to become active members of society with equal opportunities. This paper presents a systematic mapping study that analyzes the current state-of-the-art of ATs proposed in the literature to support the empowering of people with disability. Specifically, this paper focuses on (1) describing a global vision of the scientific literature published in the last 20 years about ATs in the computer science field and (2) identifying research needs, gaps, and trends. For this purpose, an in-depth analysis of 389 primary studies is presented. The information obtained from the mapping process is also constrained. Concretely, 35 ATs versus 22 disabilities are compared, obtaining striking peaks for some disabilities described in the discussion. Finally, the findings show that several areas have been covered only lightly, revealing interesting future directions and challenges for junior researchers. • ATs have the potential to break down barriers for people with disabilities, enabling them to participate more fully in society. This implies a need for rehabilitation programs to incorporate ATs into their strategies to enhance social inclusion. • Given the transformative role of ICT, rehabilitation programs should focus on helping people with disabilities develop the necessary technological skills to utilize ATs effectively. • This work highlights the diversity of ATs and disabilities, suggesting a need for personalized rehabilitation plans that match specific ATs to individual disabilities. • Rehabilitation professionals should be trained to assess and recommend appropriate ATs for each case. Communication partner training is a recommended intervention for partners of people with acquired brain injury. In this paper we explore the past, present, and future of communication partner training (CPT) based on our 2023 Speech Pathology Australia national conference address. We focus on our research team's contributions, and highlight research knowledge across stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and dementia. This work is anchored in the voice of people with communication disability. One partner in the CPT journey, Rosey Morrow, co-authors this paper. The CPT evidence base for acquired neurological conditions is growing, including in the areas of technology, co-design, and translation. However, knowledge and implementation gaps remain. AbstractDigital technologies such as virtual reality (VR) are increasingly designed and implemented to support people living with dementia who are at risk of loneliness and/or social isolation. Multi-user VR (MUVR), which involves simultaneous user engagement and a sense of being present together in VR, may promote and maintain social connectedness between people living with dementia and their support persons. This paper focuses on Phase 4 of a larger participatory action research (PAR) project, which aimed to explore the usability, acceptability and feasibility of a MUVR application and its potential to support the social connectedness of people living with dementia and their support persons. The study involved five people living with dementia and their five support persons, who trialed the application in their homes over two PAR cycles. The researcher gathered feedback through individual semi-structured interviews and observational field notes. Reflexive thematic analysis guided qualitative data analysis, and the findings suggested that MUVR is a usable, acceptable, and feasible application for this population. The findings also indicated that MUVR shows promise in promoting or maintaining social connectedness among people living with dementia and their support persons. Nonetheless, further refinement is necessary to enhance the usability, acceptability and feasibility of the MUVR application, and these areas of refinement are presented in this paper, through design recommendations for future work. Informal caregivers of dependants with dementia commence their bereavement experience long before the physical death of their dependant, a process referred to as "anticipatory grief". This represents an ambiguous state that has been acknowledged as a measurable variable among informal caregivers. The use of assessment tools for the identification of anticipatory grief is important for timely intervention to promote well-being and positive bereavement experiences. The aim of this systematic review is to identify and examine existing tools for assessing anticipatory grief among caregivers of dependants with dementia MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO, CINAHL and Web of Science were searched to July 2021. Studies focusing on the development/evaluation of instruments for measuring anticipatory grief in dementia caregivers were eligible. The quality of each measurement was graded as positive, fair, poor or no information based on defined criteria. 100 studies were identified. 33 papers were selected for full-text assessment and 12 papers met the eligibility criteria. Seven assessment tools were identified for measurement of pre-death grief caregivers – the Anticipatory Grief Scale (AGS), Marwit-Meuser Caregiver Grief Inventory (MM-CGI), MM-CGI-short-form (MM-CGI-SF), MM-CGI-brief (MM-CGI-BF), Prolonged Grief Scale (PG-12), Caregiver Grief Scale (CGS) and Caregiver Grief Questionnaire (CGQ). Based on content/construct validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability the MM-CGI/MM-CGI-SF scored highest for quality followed by the CGS. Anticipatory grief in dementia has multiple facets that can be measured using self-scoring questionnaires. Our findings provide support for different measures of anticipatory grief. Having a diagnosis of Down syndrome (DS) is associated with intellectual disability (ID), pervasive developmental disorders and Alzheimer's dementia (AD). The association between these conditions has not been well evaluated. This paper looks to examine the current evidence pertaining to the relationship between dementia in people with DS and severity of ID and the presence of pervasive developmental disorders. A scoping review using PRISMA guidance was undertaken. Medline, Cochrane database, NHS evidence, Trial registers and Open Grey were searched in December 2018 and an updated search was completed in July 2020. Three search strategies were used to retrieve articles relating to DS, dementia, pervasive developmental disorders (including autism, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)) and severity of ID. Studies were included if they met the pre-defined inclusion criteria of investigating an association between autism/ASD, ADHD, or severity of ID and the development of dementia in people with DS. Studies were excluded if they did not include primary data, if the population included non-Down causes of ID, or if no specific outcome measure related to comorbid autism/ASD, ADHD, or severity of ID and dementia in people with a diagnosis of DS were reported. There were no exclusions related to study design. Papers were assessed for quality using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). The search identified 15 papers, publishing results from 12 studies, relating to severity of ID, DS and dementia. No papers were identified relating to pervasive developmental disorders, DS and dementia. There is limited evidence on how severity of ID impacts on the presentation, diagnosis, management or prognosis of dementia in people with DS. However, no evidence was found on comorbid pervasive developmental disorders, DS and dementia. This paper has identified multiple areas for future research. There is an urgent need for longitudinal studies into the presentation, development and progression of dementia in people with DS ensuring the severity of ID and comorbid pervasive developmental conditions are captured regularly to understand their influence on the dementia etiology and outcome. : People with dementia are often excluded from research due to ethical concerns and a reliance upon conventional research methods which focus on recall and verbal expression. Creative, sensory and embodied research methods typically involve techniques that conceptually bring individuals "into" the research, thus affording an expressive capacity that traditional methods do not. This paper details a "method story", presenting three interlinked cycles of study used to explore the significance of clothing to people with dementia living in a care home. The studies drew upon arts-based and design led practices. This paper details the methods used and the opportunities that they presented when exploring the lived experience of dementia. Creative, sensory and embodied approaches enabled people with dementia to engage with research, supporting imaginative, spontaneous and flexible participation. This paper presents Dovetails, an intergenerational co-creative participatory design project, and explored ways of working with recipients of care through Craft methods leveraging reciprocity to support wellbeing and Citizenship. Working alongside older adults from Beamish Museum's wellbeing community and a children's charity, researchers supported the two participating groups to design and make ambitious, novel artefacts for one another using woodwork. Each group learned new skills and sought to improve the lives of the other group's members through making. We came to understand the artefacts created as material embodiments of care and we present transferable insight for future study design to encourage reciprocity through Craft. We contribute new nuanced understandings of Personhood and Citizenship in this context. Participants reported pride in their achievements, confounding expectations, raising ambitions, and reframing their understanding of their own wellbeing, for example in the context of dementia diagnosis. Dovetails bore meaningful benefits for individual participants and the groups themselves, beyond the timescale of our engagement, as they formed ongoing allegiances. We discuss framing design research through a 'Craft Lens', as a multi-faceted way to explore creative engagements, which enriched our understanding of making, and gift-giving to support Personhood through Social Citizenship. Time is not sequential only. This essay considers the simultaneousness of times as we experience it in the Eucharist, the re-enacting of the past and the anticipation of our future wholeness in the celebration of the present moment. It shows that this simultaneousness can be linked to the way in which people with dementia relate to time. When people with dementia get mixed up about time this is a symptom of a serious disease. But there may be other aspects to it. Their re-enacting the past may be valid behaviour. Their low future orientation may make it possible to value the present more. Losing cognitive memory does not mean that there is no memory at all. Involuntary memory or implicit memory is still available even after cognitive recall goes. This paper postulates that this is a memory which points to God's grace and shows that people with dementia can help us to see the Eucharist from a different perspective. They remind us of our own fragility and dependence on grace and make us aware that Eucharistic remembrance is involuntary, too. This paper explores the process of gaining consent from the perspectives of people living with dementia, their relatives/carers, and service providers. This is developed based on new primary qualitative research and addresses a gap in critical reflection on the practice and ethical process of research consent. A qualitative approach was used to conduct this research through the implementation of four focus groups run with people living with dementia (n = 12), two focus groups with family members (n = 6), two focus groups with service staff (n = 5). Data was analysed thematically, to identify two core themes: consent as a journey and the flexible consent approach. These identified concerns with autonomy, decision making and placing people living with dementia at the centre of the consent process. The journey of consent emerged as central to supporting participation and enhancing the consent process. The paper presents new evidence about the lived experience of research consent in the field of dementia, presenting the process of collecting consent in research as a flexible process that is best supported through a growing knowledge of participants and participation sites. A space, where the client feels safe, is necessary for therapeutic process. Its importance seems to be implicitly understood and agreed upon across different schools of psychotherapy. However, what it means and how it appears in therapy has not been clearly described before. This paper presents the findings from the first author's master thesis, which sought to answer the question 'Why is safe space important in dance therapy, and how do dance therapists define and create it in their practice?'. This phenomenological inquiry originated from a need to translate the experiential phenomenon of safe space into words. It is a first attempt to investigate safe space in depth and to provide a definition of its essence in dance movement therapy. Findings from this research describe working methods and interventions for safe space as well as qualities that therapists can embody to help their clients feel safe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To explore the preferences of people with memory complaints (PwMC) and their significant others regarding starting a diagnostic trajectory for dementia. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Embase. Selection of abstracts and papers was performed independently by two researchers. Methodological quality was assessed with the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool. Result sections of the selected papers were thematically synthesized. From 2497 citations, seven qualitative studies and two mixed methods studies published between 2010 and 2020 were included. Overall quality of the studies was high to moderate. A thematic synthesis showed that preferences for starting a diagnostic trajectory arose from the feeling of needing to do something about the symptoms, beliefs on the necessity and expected outcomes of starting a diagnostic trajectory. These views were influenced by normalization or validation of symptoms, the support or wishes of the social network, interactions with health care professionals, the health status of the PwMC, and societal factors such as stigma and socioeconomic status. A variety of considerations with regard to decision-making on starting a diagnostic trajectory for dementia were identified. This review aims to examine the instruments, approaches, scales, or assessment tools used to evaluate technology acceptance, technology adoption, and usability of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for people living with dementia and their care partners. A systematic literature review was conducted. Studies that explored the use of instruments, approaches, scales, or assessment tools to evaluate the technology acceptance and usability of ICTs for people living with dementia and their care partners were identified through five databases: Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Scopus. We included 74 out of 2182 papers. The most common scales used included the System Usability Scale (SUS) (11%), the ISONORM 9241/10 Questionnaire (4%), and the Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ) (4%). Most (59%) of the included approaches, however, were bespoke (i.e., created by the authors for a particular study) and were not named. The approaches or tools used to assess technology acceptance, technology adoption, and usability of ICTs that applied to people living with dementia had an average of 15 items and used an average of 5.23 scale points. There is no clear, standardised approach for assessing the technology acceptance, technology adoption, and usability of ICTs for people living with dementia and their care partners. The findings of this review may be used by academics to design and implement improved and more consistent assessment tools to assess technology acceptance, technology adoption, and usability of ICTs for people living with dementia and their care partners. The number of ICTs for people with dementia and their care partners that can be used for rehabilitation is increasing The most commonly recognized assessment tools used in this study were the SUS, ISONORM 9241/10, and PSSUQ questionnaires. For the custom assessment tools, the average number of items included in this study was 15 with five-point bidirectional labelling. Recent political processes have rendered people with dementia an increasingly surveilled population. Surveillance is a contentious issue within dementia research, spanning technological monitoring, biomarker research and epidemiological data gathering. This paper explores surveillance in the relationships of people affected by dementia, how older relatives both with and without diagnoses are surveilled in everyday interactions, and the importance of expectations in guiding surveillance. This paper presents data from 41 in-depth interviews with people affected by dementia living in the community in the United Kingdom. Agedness was a key contributor to expectations that a person may have dementia, based on previous experiences, media accounts and wider awareness. Expectations provoked surveillance in interactions, with participants looking for signs of dementia when interacting with older relatives. Older people also enacted self-surveillance, monitoring their own behaviour. Various actions could be attributed to dementia because interpretation is malleable, partly vindicating expectations while leaving some uncertainties. Expectant surveillance transformed people's experiences because they organised their own actions, and interpreted those of others, in line with pre-existing meanings. The ability to interpret behaviours to fit expectations can bring coherence to uncertainties of ageing, cognition and dementia, but risks ascribing dementia to many older people who straddle those uncertainties. Objective: To investigate how religion influences care pathways for black and minority ethnic individuals with dementia. We conducted a systematic search of the literature to explore how religion affects later presentation to care services, absence of care-seeking and dissatisfaction with care. Exclusion and Inclusion criteria were applied to the research literature. Qualitative and quantitative papers were included. Included studies were assessed independently by four authors according to quality criteria. Two US studies adhered to the final screening stage. Findings from these papers postulated that religion influences care in two polarised ways: (1) Religion hinders access to the traditional health care pathway. (2) Religion assists in positive coping. Collaboration between religious institutions and health care providers is required to improve care referral, provide information dissemination and relieve care-giver burden. Objectives: The aim of this Part I systematic review was to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the lives of people with dementia living in the community or in residential care. Part II focused on unpaid carers. Methods: This review was registered on PROSPERO [CRD42021248050]. Five data bases (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science) were searched in July 2021. Studies were included if they reported on the impacts of the pandemic on people living with dementia, either in the community or residential settings, and published in English, German, Polish, or Spanish. Risk of bias was assessed using the Standard Quality Assessment QualSyst. Results: Forty papers from 33 studies reported on the effects of COVID-19 on people with dementia. Included studies were conducted across 15 countries, focusing on single-country evaluations except in one study. Three studies focused on care homes, whilst the remainder reported on the community. Studies were categorised into five impacts: Cognition; Independence and physical functioning; Behavioural symptoms; Well-being; and Access to care. All studies evidenced the negative pandemic impacts, including faster cognitive, physical, and behavioural deterioration, limited access to care, and poorer mental and social health. Conclusions: Future restrictions need to consider the need for people with dementia to stay cognitively, physically, and socially stimulated to live well, and this review provides a call for a future pandemic strategy for dementia. This paper explores the Dementia Enquirers approach to dementia research, and the 10 local projects which have been funded in the first wave of the programme. The paper is written by six people with dementia with expertise by experience, supported by a traditional academic with expertise by research. This co-production enables the voices of people with dementia to be heard, and expands the field of disability studies. The authors discuss problems with traditional academic research, and the different ways that people with dementia go about research. Two examples of research projects led by people with dementia are discussed. The paper explores difficulties people with dementia have had with formal research ethics procedures and how they propose to do things differently. In conclusion, the authors challenge mainstream dementia research to do things differently, and to understand the potential contributions of people with dementia. The aging of the population is associated with an increase in the prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia. Our research aim was to determine how technology can help to improve the support for behavioral and psychological challenges of dementia. A systematic review of the literature was performed following PRISMA guidelines. Papers meeting the inclusion criteria and reporting technological devices aimed to the management of these challenges. After screening 1085 papers, 18 studies were eligible for inclusion in the review. Technologies identified in this search (e.g., robots, mobile, apps, computer, software, GPS, wearables, assistive technology) suggest that this non-pharmacological approach may be useful in projects aimed to the management and control of behavioral and psychological manifestations in people living with Alzheimer. This paper examined phonological processing as reflected in Mandarin word and non-word repetition. Issues related to dementia effects, age effects, and linguistic variables are discussed. Forty-five speakers of Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan took part in this study. Fourteen seniors with Alzheimer's disease (AD), 14 healthy adults, and 17 healthy seniors individually completed a task of word repetition. Scores of accurate repetition were calculated, and error types as well as error frequency were analysed. Linguistic variables, including lexicality, frequency, non-word, and syllable length, were discussed. Major findings were indicative of a significant dementia effect, in which participants with AD were significantly impaired in repeating words with more syllables, specifically 5-syllable non-words of low frequency. Purpose: People living with dementia are often at increased risk of becoming socially disconnected due to dementia-related challenges. In recent years, digital technology has been designed to help address the social health of people living with dementia and provide opportunities to promote or maintain their social connectedness. This paper presents the findings from phase two of a participatory action research project, which explored people living with dementia and their caregiver's experiences and perceptions of social connectedness and the potential role of Virtual Reality (VR) in promoting or maintaining same. Materials and Methods: People living with dementia (n = 8) and their informal caregivers (n = 8) participated in an individual, 1:1 online interview. Data analysis was guided by reflexive thematic analysis. Results: The findings presented four themes: social connectedness: lived experiences and insights, facilitating social connectedness, barriers to social connectedness and the potential of multi-user VR for social connectedness. People living with dementia experienced a range of personal, community and societal connectedness. Facilitators of social connectedness included supportive, non-judgemental, and reciprocal relationships, technology adoption, and personal and contextual facilitators. Dementia-related difficulties and periods of disruption or change were considered barriers to social connectedness. Multi-user VR was perceived as useful for promoting and maintaining social connectedness. Conclusions: The perceived usefulness of multi-user VR for social connectedness indicates its potential for use with this population. Understanding the lived experiences, barriers, and facilitators of social connectedness will assist researchers and the human-computer interaction community to inform the design of future multi-user VR for social connectedness outcomes with people living with dementia and their caregivers. Purpose: Creative workshops can promote various positive outcomes for people with dementia, such as reductions in undesirable symptoms and achieving levels of autonomy. Although these are undoubtedly positive outcomes, there is little understanding of the specific processes that can enable such outcomes. To address this issue, our study investigates the interactional processes of "choice-sequences," in which a PlwD makes a choice pertaining to materials (e.g. pens, coloured papers) for a creative activity. Methods: This Conversation Analysis study draws upon around 60 hours of video-recorded creative workshops involving artists, people with dementia, and carers. Drawing upon the notion of "co-creativity," we examine the collaborative work that goes into accomplishing choice- sequences. Results: While these sequences typically begin with an artist presenting a choice to a PlwD, carers routinely enter these interactions and provide various forms of support needed to accomplish each basic action of a choice-sequence. Conclusions: This study shows carers working alongside the artist to pursue the PlwD's choice in a triadic participation framework, and carers supporting the PlwD in a dyadic participation framework with the artist having exited the interaction. Aim: To assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of Registered Nurses working in residential aged care facilities pertaining to pain management for residents living with dementia. Background: Sub-optimal pain management continues for people living with dementia in residential aged care. Registered Nurses are the pivotal staff responsible for complex assessment and management of people residing in residential aged care facilities. Design and methods: :This integrative literature review was informed by Whittemore (2005). Searching and screening followed the PRISMA guidelines. Results: Thirteen papers were identified, the major themes identified were gaps in knowledge and skills, uncertainty of assessment, and delays in treatment. Conclusion: Registered Nurses require education on pain management for people living with dementia in residential aged care. Broader issues in residential aged care contribute to the problem and require examination. Objectives: Inpatient mental health beds for people with dementia are a limited resource. Practitioners need an understanding of this population to provide high-quality care and design services. This review examines the characteristics, care, and outcomes of people with dementia admitted to inpatient mental health services. Methods: Systematic searches of key databases were undertaken up to November 2021. Findings were grouped into categories and then synthesized into a narrative review. Results: The review identified 36 international papers, the majority of which were retrospective audits. The literature describes significant psychiatric and medical comorbidity and significant risk of change in residence and death associated with admission. Conclusions: We found a limited literature describing the characteristics, care, and outcomes of people with dementia in inpatient mental health services. The lack of research is striking given the complexity and vulnerability of this client group. More research is needed to describe the needs of this group, current and best practice to optimize care. Clinical Implications: Professionals working in inpatient mental health services need to be aware of the evidence base available, consider how they evaluate patient outcomes, review their staffing and skills mix, and seek the views of patients and relatives in improving services. These tools can evaluate the cognitive status of a subject, which can be time-consuming and expensive for interpretation. Therefore, this paper aimed to optimize the systematic NPTs by machine learning and develop new classification models for differentiating healthy controls (HC), mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer’s disease dementia (ADD) among groups of subjects.A total dataset of 14,926 subjects was obtained from the formal 46 NPTs based on the Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery (SNSB). The statistical values of the dataset included an age of 70.18 ± 7.13 with an education level of 8.18 ± 5.50 and a diagnosis group of three; HC, MCI, and ADD. The dataset was preprocessed and classified in two- and three-way machine-learning classification from scikit-learn (www.scikit-learn.org) to differentiate between HC versus MCI, HC versus ADD, HC versus Cognitive Impairment (CI) (MCI + ADD), and HC versus MCI versus ADD. We compared the performance of seven machine learning algorithms, including Naïve Bayes (NB), random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), AdaBoost, and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predicted value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), area under the curve (AUC), confusion matrixes, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) were obtained from each model based on the test dataset.The trained models based on 29 best-selected NPT features were evaluated, the model with the RF algorithm yielded the best accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and AUC in all four models: HC versus MCI was 98%, 98%, 97%, 98%, 97%, and 99%; HC versus ADD was 98%, 99%, 96%, 97%, 98%, and 99%; HC versus CI was 97%, 99%, 92%, 97%, 97%, and 99% and HC versus MCI versus ADD was 97%, 96%, 98%, 97%, 98%, and 99%, respectively, in predicting of cognitive impairment among subjects.According to the results, the RF algorithm was the best classification model for both two- and three-way classification among the seven algorithms trained on an imbalanced NPTs SNSB dataset. The trained models proved useful for diagnosing MCI and ADD in patients with normal NPTs. These models can optimize cognitive evaluation, enhance diagnostic accuracy, and reduce missed diagnoses. AbstractOne factor leading to compromised Quality of Life (QoL) for people with dementia in long-term care settings is the significant barriers they face in accessing experiences beyond their physical premises. Although, in recent years, research within HCI has investigated the use of Virtual Reality (VR) in providing enriched experiences for people with dementia, few studies have looked into the practical issues relating to integrating and deploying VR into care settings and how in-depth understanding of such issues can inspire VR design for dementia care. Considering the perspective of key stakeholders, we demonstrate VR’s potential to create a rich conversation space with family members, preserve the identity and personhood of people with dementia through VR, and consider organisational issues of VR deployment in care settings. Assistive technology (AT) with context-aware computing and artificial intelligence capabilities can be applied to address cognitive and communication impairments experienced by persons with dementia (PwD). This paper aims to provide an overview of current literature regarding some characteristics of intelligent assistive technology devices (IATDs) for cognitive and communicative impairments of PwD. It also aims to identify the areas of impairment addressed by these IATDs. A multi-faceted systematic search strategy yielded records. Predefined criteria were applied for inclusion and data extraction. Thereafter data was thematically analysed and synthesised. This review demonstrates that almost all of the research involving IATDs has focused on cognitive impairments of PwD and has not yet evolved past the conceptual or prototype stages of development. Summaries of commercially available IATDs for PwD and relevant prototypes are provided at the end of this review. This research concluded that IATDs for PwD targeting cognition and communication problems primarily focus on social robots, and that they address cognitive impairments of attention, affect, and social-pragmatic communicative impairments. Future research endeavours concerning AT for PwD should explore collaboration between computer engineering and health practitioners to address the identified gaps. Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) describes a group of language-led dementias. Speech and language therapy is the main available intervention for people with PPA. Despite best practice recommendations for speech and language therapy to include access to group therapies (Volkmer et al, 2023a), research evidence to date has predominantly focused on delivery in individual sessions. The aim of this study was to gather the collective intelligence of expert speech and language therapists/pathologists delivering group therapy for people with PPA to synthesize guidance for clinicians. This paper describes a qualitative study using narrative synthesis methods. Data were collected using the Template for Intervention Description and Replication – TIDiER. Eight respondents described a total of 17 different groups. Respondents worked across healthcare, research clinics and third sector organizations in Australia, Canada, Spain, the USA and the UK. For the purposes of analysis, groups were divided into two main types: (1) groups delivering specific therapy interventions; and (2) groups providing broader opportunities for conversational practice and support. This initial synthesis of the current state of the art in PPA therapy groups highlights several important considerations around candidacy, content and ecological validity of delivering group intervention for people with PPA. Culture change initiatives in older adult and dementia care have called for a new care paradigm informed by a relational ontology and relational theories. Yet translating these humanizing principles into practice has proven difficult; traditional approaches to knowledge translation have not had a sustained impact. One of the most significant impediments to transforming the culture of care has been the lack of understanding of what it means to be and act relational in practice. A growing body of research is demonstrating the potential of critical arts-based inquiry/pedagogy (CABI/P) for translating theory in accessible and relevant ways for diverse audiences and for shifting images, understandings and actions in healthcare in more effective ways. As part of a larger longitudinal project, this paper explores the immediate impacts of a research-informed drama called ‘Cracked: new light on dementia,’ and how it might enhance understandings of relational caring for staff working in long-term care (LTC) homes. Data from post-performance focus group/interview discussions with staff working in two different LTC settings point to the effectiveness of Cracked in translating key principles of relational theories into older adult and dementia care and the possibilities of CABI/P in gerontological education more broadly. Although organizational and broader system change is needed to achieve sustained impact of relational caring practices, CABI/P, such as Cracked, has the potential to expose and challenge entrenched assumptions, policies, practices, and to imagine and effect more compassionate, humane, and equitable care. Following the social conception of moral agency, this paper claims that many agents commonly exempted from moral responsibility, like young children, adults with late-stage dementia, and nonhuman animals, may nevertheless qualify as participants in moral responsibility practices. Blame and other moral responsibility responses are understood according to the communicative emotion account of the reactive attitudes. To blame someone means having an emotion episode that acts as a vehicle for conveying a particular moral content. Therefore, moral agency is argued to be manifested in communicative exchanges between a claimant and a defendant. While many human and nonhuman agents are justifiably exempted from ascriptions of moral responsibility, this does not necessarily exclude such agents from the community of moral agents altogether. Toddlers and dogs, for instance, seem capable of other-directed reactive attitudes, like resentment, and could, therefore, qualify as participants in moral responsibility practices with respect to the claimant position. Therefore, we may have reason to adopt a distinct claimant-directed participant stance to some beings, even if they fail to qualify as apt targets of blame. Recent developments in care for people with mental health conditions of working age have been underpinned by the recovery approach. This paper critically reviews the idea of recovery concerning people with dementia and examines its applicability to living well with dementia. The paper critically reviews the literature relating to the use of the recovery approach for people with dementia, particularly in nursing care. A search was conducted of CINAHL, Cochrane, Science Direct, OVID and Wiley Online databases through the Auckland University of Technology library. The search was confined to the last 10 years of research. Using keywords 'recovery', 'nursing', 'dementia', 'older adult', 'hope', 'identity', 'connectedness', 'empowerment', 'CHIME' and 'mental health'. The recovery approach shares many ideas with person-centred approaches to dementia care and themes were evaluated using key themes from CHIME, connectedness, hope, identity, meaning and empowerment. The paper concludes by suggesting that care for people with dementia that draws on ideas taken from the recovery approach would improve well-being for people with dementia and the people who care for them and that the CHIME themes are useful for considering care for people with dementia. To explore alcohol consumption among older Norwegian adults with symptoms of cognitive decline, assess the agreement between the reports of older adults and their next of kin regarding a person's alcohol consumption, and explore clinical and sociodemographic variables associated with agreement. Alcohol consumption was measured among 3608 older adults consulting specialist health care for symptoms of cognitive decline. Agreement between the participant and their next of kin regarding the participant's alcohol consumption was assessed with a weighted kappa (κ). A logistic regression analysis for hierarchical data was used to explore variables associated with agreement. Both the participants and their next of kin reported that more than 20% of the participants consumed alcohol 1–3 times a week, and that approximately 10% consumed alcohol four or more times a week. The agreement between the participant's and their next of kin's report regarding the participant's alcohol consumption was high (κ =.852), and variables associated with agreement were no cognitive decline, not drinking alcohol during the last year or ever as reported by the participant, and low agitation scores on a psychiatric assessment. This paper found alcohol consumption among older adults with symptoms of cognitive decline that was above the national average in Norway. This is also the first paper to demonstrate that a next of kin can be a reliable source of information regarding older adults' alcohol consumption. Despite the rapid proliferation and emphasis on technology, the use of assistive technology among individuals with varying disabilities and age is different. This situation instigates the need for a systematic review to gain a realistic understanding of prominent issues, research trends and assistive technology applications with minimal bias. Subsequently, semantic relation between qualitative and quantitative research literature on assistive technologies was explored to future research directions. A manual search across reputed research databases was done to find out relevant literature from January 2005 to April 2020. In this paper, latent semantic analysis (LSA) was done to develop an information model for achieving defined objectives. A corpus of 367 research papers published during 2005–2020 was processed using LSA. Term frequency, inverse document frequency of high loading terms provided five major topic solutions. Marcia Scherer, Rory Cooper and Stefano Federici are most noticed authors in assistive technology research. "Smart Assistive Technologies" and "Wearable Technologies for Rehabilitation" came out as contemporary research trends within assistive technologies. The manuscript concludes the fact that assistive technologies for rehabilitation are experiencing a transition from standalone mechanical devices towards smart, wearable and connected devices. Background: Alzheimer disease (AD) is a leading cause of global burden with great impact on societies. Although research is working intensively on promising therapy, the problem remains up-to-date. Among the various proposed hypotheses regarding causality and therapy, emerging evidence supports the hypothesis that gastrointestinal microbiota through the so-called 'gut-brain axis' interacts with immune system and brain and shape the balance between homeostasis and disease; the involvement of gastrointestinal microbiota in the pathophysiology of AD is less defined, even though the role of 'gut-brain axis' has been well verified for other neurodegenerative conditions. Methods: We performed a systematic review of PubMed/MEDLINE database from 1st January 1990 to 17th October 2018, to investigate the accessible literature regarding possible association between AD and gastrointestinal microbiota. Inclusion criteria were available full text in English language, original clinical papers implicating AD patients and any sort of gastrointestinal microbiota. Results: Through our query, an initial number of 241 papers has been identified. After removing duplicates and through an additional manual search, twenty-four papers met our inclusion criteria. The great majority of eligible publications supported a possible connection between AD and gastrointestinal microbiota. The most common investigated microorganism was Helicobacter pylori. Conclusion: Our own systematic review, showed a possible association between AD and gastrointestinal microbiota mainly including Helicobacter pylori, and thus further research is required for substantiation of causality as well as for the establishment of promising novel therapies. Background: This paper draws on a longitudinal ethnographic study of music-making with "post-verbal" people: those with stroke, learning difficulties, acquired brain injury, dementias or autism. Methods: Using embedded observation, arts workshops, interviews with families and carers and focus groups with Music Leaders, the project traced how inclusive music-making happens with "post-verbal" people. It used post-human theory to illuminate and explore processes and benefits. Results: This paper fuses the practical and theoretical aspects of making music with post-verbal people, to understand both how it happens, and, what it signifies. It shows how post-verbal people use music to communicate and demonstrate their capacities, and analyses how those working with them use music to foster a sense of inclusion and belonging. The aim of this paper is to raise awareness and provide a frame of analysis to prevent environmental triggers of maladaptive behaviours of people living with dementia (PwD), for which transition to an institutional setting can cause great distress. Institutional settings are one of the main causes of maladaptive beaviours of PwD. We provide a narrative description of an environmental analogue, using thick description methodology of a design fiction situation – a long-haul flight – to illustrate similar behavioural processes taking place in a setting for all comers to understand psycho-environmental mechanisms that lead PwD to distress. Phenomenology of homeostatic value of space is discussed. We identify four main factors to apprehend homeostatic value of space: (1) Survival properties of the environment; (2) Person-Environment fit; (3) Environmental control and (4) Sensoristasis. Residential respite (RR) provides a valuable break for family carers, but little known about its offer, take-up or experiences of carers of people living with dementia. This paper aims to further understandings of factors influencing RR use. RR stakeholder workshop and qualitative interviews. Stakeholder or living in the community in own home. RR stakeholders (13); family carers with experience of RR, or had declined it, or were planning to use it for the first time (n = 36). Stakeholders participated in a workshop to discuss provision, models and funding of RR. Family carer interviews focused on expectations, experiences and outcomes of use of RR. Data were analysed thematically and mapped against Andersen's model of health service use. Identifying need for RR does not necessarily transpire into use. Planning and ease of booking were crucial for carers, but many felt there was little support with this. Systemic factors concerning funding, planning and booking RR act as barriers to its use. Findings highlight how systemic factors influence RR use. Discussing respite need in routine care planning or reviews may support carers and people living with dementia to consider RR, but system changes are needed to address barriers. Behaviour can have an influence on (coping with) chronic conditions such as dementia. Assistive technology can stimulate the daily behaviour of people with dementia, but the mechanisms through which this happens are unclear. This research uses expert interviews with medical experts (n = 9) and a systematic literature review of smart building interventions stimulating health behaviour (n = 12). Results show how facilitation, incentive motivation (i.e., feedback), observational learning and self-efficacy are most promising according to medical experts; if they are appropriately personalised towards needs, preferences as well as abilities. The literature review shows how most of the examined research uses facilitation and incentive motivation to stimulate behaviour. Although positive results are reported in all studies, methodological quality could be improved. For the design of smart building interventions for people with MCI or dementia, facilitation and incentive motivation seem to be promising behaviour change mechanisms. Outcome expectation, observational learning and self-efficacy could reinforcing the aforementioned mechanisms. Future research should focus on how different (environmental, digital) cues can be personalized and can adapt over time, as dementia progresses. Assistive technology for people with dementia can have an effect on (health) behaviour, which may in turn influence coping strategies or quality of life. Behaviour change mechanisms can inform the design of assistive technology such as smart building interventions. Dementia comprises a group of brain disorders characterised by loss of cognitive function. Sensory loss, predominantly vision (the focus of this review) and hearing, is a significant problem for people living with dementia. Eyecare practitioners such as optometrists therefore play an important role in identifying and addressing vision-related care needs. To support provision of high quality "dementia-friendly" eyecare, this scoping review summarises recent primary research findings and available clinical practice guidelines, to identify research gaps relating to vision and dementia, and make recommendations for future research and clinical practice. The review set a priori guidelines for the population, concept and context based on the review questions. Primary research papers (2016–2021) were included via 3-step search strategy: preliminary search to index terms, full search, search reference lists of included articles for further inclusions. Additionally, websites of eyecare professional bodies in English-speaking countries were searched to identify current clinical eyecare practice guidelines relating to dementia. Study characteristics (e.g. country, study design) were reported descriptively. Patterns within findings/recommendations from included sources were identified using thematic analysis and reported as themes. 1651 titles/abstracts and 161 full-text articles were screened for eligibility. Three clinical practice guidelines were also identified. The final review included 21 sources: 18 primary research papers and 3 clinical practice guidelines. The thematic analysis reported five key themes: Diagnosis/Screening, dementia progression, findings on clinical visual testing, tailored approach to care, improving care. This scoping review demonstrated limited information about current practices of optometrists working with people living with dementia. Recent evidence reinforces the continuing need for improved eyecare for people living with dementia, taking into account their specific needs with an individualised approach. Up-to-date practical recommendations are synthesised for eyecare providers before, during and after a consultation with a person living with dementia, to better support their care. Aotearoa New Zealand's population is ageing. Increasing life expectancy is accompanied by increases in prevalence of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and ageing-related disorders. The multicentre Dementia Prevention Research Clinic longitudinal study aims to improve understanding of AD and dementia in Aotearoa, in order to develop interventions that delay or prevent progression to dementia. Comprising research clinics in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin, this multi-disciplinary study involves community participants who undergo biennial investigations informed by international protocols and best practice: clinical, neuropsychological, neuroimaging, lifestyle evaluations, APOE genotyping, blood collection and processing. A key research objective is to identify a 'biomarker signature' that predicts progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD. Candidate biomarkers include: blood proteins and microRNAs, genetic, neuroimaging and neuropsychological markers, health, cultural, lifestyle, sensory and psychosocial factors. We are examining a range of mechanisms underlying the progression of AD pathology (e.g. faulty blood–brain barrier, excess parenchymal iron, vascular dysregulation). This paper will outline key aspects of the Dementia Prevention Research Clinic's research, provide an overview of data collection, and a summary of 266 participants recruited to date.
