Jasminanthes tuyetanhiae is one of the precious herbs and good for human health, discovered in the Da-Bia Mountain (Phu Yen province, Vietnam). The identification of the CTW species (species believed to be J. tuyetanhiae collected in 2019) by molecular indicators showed that this species belongs to the Apocynaceae family. High similarity (98.2%) in the ITS1-5.8SrRNA-ITS2 gene sequence of CTW when compared on Genbank with J. tuyetanhiae and genetic distance difference (1.3%) - in the limit of difference of the same taxon considered on matK sequence shows that CTW is likely to belong to this species. Surface sterilization of ex vitro explants with HgCl2 (0.1%) for 3 min gave the highest sterilization efficiency compared to the remaining treatments with the induction explant rate of 93.33%. BA (0.5 mg l−1) is the most optimal for effective in vitro shoot multiplication in this species. Adding IBA to culture media at the appropriate concentration (0.5 mg l−1) increased rooting ability, shortened rooting time (13 days) and increased root length (6.53 mm). The ventilation culture system improves rooting efficiency, stimulates growth and induces secondary root formation—which is a suitable system for in vitro propagation of the Jasminanthes tuyetanhiae in this study. Intersphincteric resection (ISR) with hand-sewn coloanal anastomosis (CAA) has been proposed as an alternative to abdominoperineal resection (APR) for low rectal cancer. However, there is still lack of evidence regarding long-term outcomes of this procedure. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and long-term results of this surgery. This is a prospective study conducted from 2009–2019. Patients with low rectal cancer lying in 3–5 cm from the anal verge graded as T1–T3 were included. Laparoscopic ISR and hand-sewn CAA with inverted ileostomy were performed in all patients. Perioperative and long-term functional and oncological outcomes were investigated. There were 39 patients (25 men and 14 women) with the mean age of 54.5 years. The mean operating time and postoperative hospital stay were 196 ± 18 min and 7.1 ± 0.7 days. No complication or mortality occurred within 30 days postoperatively. Three late complications occurred: two anastomotic leakages and one anastomotic stricture. Mean follow-up duration was 45.6 months. There was no recurrence and most patients were satisfied with the preserved anus (mean Wexner incontinence score was 6.4 and 3.1 at 6 and 12 months, respectively). Three individuals (7.7%) had distant metastasis and two died. The disease-free survival and overall survival probabilities were 90.8% and 91.6% at 5 years. Laparoscopic ISR with hand-sewn CAA is feasible, safe and has good long-term outcomes for low rectal cancer and might be a good alternative to APR. More studies are required to better improve long-term outcomes of this surgery.

Background Broad-spectrum antimicrobials are commonly used as empirical therapy for infections of presumed bacterial origin. Increasing resistance to these antimicrobial agents has prompted the need for alternative therapies and more effective surveillance. Better surveillance leads to more informed and improved delivery of therapeutic interventions, potentially leading to better treatment outcomes. Methods We screened 1017 Gram negative bacteria (excluding Pseudomonas spp. and Acinetobacter spp.) isolated between 2011 and 2013 from positive blood cultures for susceptibility against third generation cephalosporins, ESBL and/or AmpC production, and associated ESBL/AmpC genes, at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City. Results Phenotypic screening found that 304/1017 (30%) organisms were resistance to third generation cephalosporins; 172/1017 (16.9%) of isolates exhibited ESBL activity, 6.2% (63/1017) had AmpC activity, and 0.5% (5/1017) had both ESBL and AmpC activity. E. coli and Aeromonas spp. were the most common organisms associated with ESBL and AmpC phenotypes, respectively. Nearly half of the AmpC producers harboured an ESBL gene. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) between the antimicrobial resistance phenotypes of the organisms associated with community and hospital-acquired infections. Conclusion AmpC and ESBL producing organisms were commonly associated with bloodstream infections in this setting, with antimicrobial resistant organisms being equally distributed between infections originating from the community and healthcare settings. Aeromonas spp., which was associated with bloodstream infections in cirrhotic/hepatitis patients, were the most abundant AmpC producing organism. We conclude that empirical monotherapy with third generation cephalosporins may not be optimum in this setting. Let Ω be a pseudoconvex domain in \(\mathbb {C}^{n}\) with smooth boundary bΩ. We define general estimates \((f\text {-}\mathcal {M})^{k}_{\Omega }\) and \((f\text {-}\mathcal {M})^{k}_{b{\Omega }}\) on k-forms for the complex Laplacian □ on Ω and the Kohn–Laplacian □b on bΩ. For 1 ≤ k ≤ n−2, we show that \((f\text {-}\mathcal {M})^{k}_{b{\Omega }}\) holds if and only if \((f\text {-}\mathcal {M})^{k}_{\Omega }\) and \((f\text {-}\mathcal {M})^{n-k-1}_{\Omega }\) hold. Our proof relies on Kohn’s method in Kohn (Ann. Math. 156(2), 213–248, 2002).

Under a potential-theoretical hypothesis named f-property which holds for all pseudoconvex domains of finite type and many examples of infinite type, we give a new method for constructing a family of bumping functions and hence plurisubharmonic peak functions with good estimates. The rate of lower bounds on the Kobayashi metric follows by the estimates of peak functions. The application to the continuous extendibility of proper holomorphic maps is given.

Arsenic contamination of groundwater continues to threaten the health of millions of people in southeast Asia. The oxidation of organic carbon, coupled to the reductive dissolution of arsenic-bearing iron oxides, is thought to control the release of sediment-bound arsenic into groundwater. However, the cause of the high spatial variability in groundwater arsenic concentrations—which can range from 5 to 500 μg l−1 within distances of a few kilometres—has been uncertain. Here, we combine measurements of sediment age, organic-matter reactivity and water chemistry at four locations along a cross-section of the arsenic-contaminated Red River floodplain in Vietnam to determine the origin of variations in groundwater arsenic concentrations. The burial age of the aquifer sediments, determined using optical stimulated luminescence, ranged from 460 years near the course of the present-day river to 5,900 years at the margin of the floodplain. The groundwater arsenic content and the reactivity of sedimentary organic carbon, determined using radiotracer measurements of the rate of methanogenesis, declined with sediment age. The sedimentary pools of both iron and arsenic also declined with the burial age of the sediments. We suggest that the age of aquifer sediments is a key determinant of groundwater arsenic concentrations. Arsenic contamination of groundwater threatens the health of millions of people in southeast Asia. Measurements in an arsenic-contaminated aquifer in Vietnam point to sediment age as a key determinant of groundwater arsenic concentrations.

We discuss in Sect. 1 the property of regularity at the boundary of separately holomorphic functions along families of discs and apply, in Sect. 2, to two situations. First, let \(\mathcal{W}\) be a wedge of ℂn with Cω, generic edge ℰ: a holomorphic function f on \(\mathcal{W}\) has always a generalized (hyperfunction) boundary value bv(f) on ℰ, and this coincides with the collection of the boundary values along the discs which have Cω transversal intersection with ℰ. Thus Sect. 1 can be applied and yields the uniform continuity at ℰ of f when bv(f) is (separately) continuous. When \(\mathcal{W}\) is only smooth, an additional property, the temperateness of f at ℰ, characterizes the existence of boundary value bv(f) as a distribution on ℰ. If bv(f) is continuous, this operation is consistent with taking limits along discs (Theorem 2.8). By Sect. 1, this yields again the uniform continuity at ℰ of tempered holomorphic functions with continuous bv. This is the theorem by Rosay (Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 297(1):63–72, 1986), in whose original proof the method of “slicing” by discs is not used.
