To evaluate the recall rate and performance of free-breathing T1W dynamic imaging in patients who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced liver MRI.We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent free-breathing dynamic T1WI liver MRI using Cartesian (XD-VIBE) or self-gated radial (SG-GRASP) sequences at two institutions. Four radiologists independently reviewed the overall image quality, streak, and motion artifacts for precontrast, arterial, and portal venous phases on a 4-point scale. Hepatic observations were annotated and assessed according to LI-RADS v2018.In total, 360 patients were included (XD-VIBE [n = 253], SG-GRASP [n = 107]). The overall image quality of free-breathing T1WI was 3.4 ± 0.4, 3.2 ± 0.4, and 3.5 ± 0.4 for precontrast, arterial, and portal venous phases, respectively. The actual recall rate was 0.6% (2/360). The SG-GRASP group showed fewer motion artifacts and more streak artifacts than the XD-VIBE group in all phases (p0.001 for all). The overall image quality was not significantly different between the two sequences in arterial (3.2 ± 0.4 in both, p = 0.607) and portal venous phases (3.5 ± 0.4 in XD-VIBE, 3.4 ± 0.4 in SG-GRASP, p = 0.214). Two sequences did not show significant differences in the lesion detection rate (figure of merit, FOM: 0.67 vs. 0.68, p = 0.876) or diagnostic performance for hepatocellular carcinoma (FOM: 0.55 vs. 0.62, p = 0.105).Both XD-VIBE and SG-GRASP provided sufficient image quality for patients at risk of developing motion artifacts, without significant differences in image quality or the lesion detection rate between sequences.• The overall image quality of free-breathing T1-weighted images using Cartesian or radial sequences was 3.4 ± 0.4, 3.2 ± 0.4, and 3.5 ± 0.4 for precontrast, arterial, and portal venous phases, respectively. • Only 0.3% (1/360) had undiagnostic exams and the actual recall rate was 0.6% (2/360) in patients who underwent free-breathing dynamic T1WI. • The overall lesion detection rate was 0.67 without a significant difference between Cartesian and radial sequences (figure of merit: 0.67 vs. 0.68, respectively, p = 0.876).

Vascular calcification is a serious complication of hyperphosphatemia that causes cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Previous studies have reported that plasmalemmal phosphate (Pi) transporters, such as PiT-1/2, mediate depolarization, Ca2+ influx, oxidative stress, and calcific changes in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). However, the pathogenic mechanism of mitochondrial Pi uptake in vascular calcification associated with hyperphosphatemia has not been elucidated. We demonstrated that the phosphate carrier (PiC) is the dominant mitochondrial Pi transporter responsible for high Pi-induced superoxide generation, osteogenic gene upregulation, and calcific changes in primary VSMCs isolated from rat aortas. Notably, acute incubation with high Pi markedly increased the protein abundance of PiC via ERK1/2- and mTOR-dependent translational upregulation. Genetic suppression of PiC prevented Pi-induced ERK1/2 activation, superoxide production, osteogenic differentiation, and vascular calcification of VSMCs in vitro and aortic rings ex vivo. Pharmacological inhibition of mitochondrial Pi transport using butyl malonate (BMA) or mersalyl abolished all pathologic changes involved in high Pi-induced vascular calcification. BMA or mersalyl also effectively prevented osteogenic gene upregulation and calcification of aortas from 5/6 subtotal nephrectomized mice fed a high-Pi diet. Our results suggest that mitochondrial Pi uptake via PiC is a critical molecular mechanism mediating mitochondrial superoxide generation and pathogenic calcific changes, which could be a novel therapeutic target for treating vascular calcification associated with hyperphosphatemia.

Purpose of Review Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy success rates depend on several stone and patient-related factors, one of which is stone density which is calculated on computed tomography scan in Hounsfield Units. Studies have shown inverse correlation between SWL success and HU; however, there remains considerable variation between studies. We performed a systematic review regarding the use of HU in SWL for renal calculi to consolidate the current evidence and address current knowledge gaps. Recent Findings Database including MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus were searched from inception through August 2022. Studies in English language analysing stone density/attenuation in adult patients undergoing SWL for renal calculi were included for assessment of Shockwave lithotripsy outcomes, use of stone attenuation to predict success, use of mean and peak stone density and Hounsfield unit density, determination of optimum cut-off values, nomograms/scoring systems, and assessment of stone heterogeneity. 28 studies with a total of 4,206 patients were included in this systematic review with sample size ranging from 30 to 385 patients. Male to female ratio was 1.8, with an average age of 46.3 years. Mean overall ESWL success was 66.5%. Stone size ranged from 4 to 30 mm in diameter. Mean stone density was used by two-third of the studies to predict the appropriate cut-off for SWL success, ranging from 750 to 1000 HU. Additional factors such as peak HU and stone heterogeneity index were also evaluated with variable results. Stone heterogeneity index was considered a better indicator for success in larger stones (cut-off value of 213) and predicting SWL stone clearance in one session. Prediction scores had been attempted, with researchers looking into combining stone density with other factors such as skin to stone distance, stone volume, and differing heterogeneity indices with variable results. Summary Numerous studies demonstrate a link between shockwave lithotripsy outcomes and stone density. Among numerous approaches that have been presented for computational contact analysis, the node-to-segment (NTS) approach is widely adopted in industrial applications, particularly with the penalty method. However, the pure penalty-method-based NTS approach fails the patch test even with the area regularization (AR) technique. There have been relatively few solutions for this problem compared to those for Lagrange-multiplier-method-based NTS approaches. This paper presents an improved AR technique and attempts to make the penalty-method-based NTS approach pass the patch test. The proposed approach improves the accuracy without the need to introduce additional geometry to the conventional penalty-method-based NTS approach. The entire competence area of a slave node is not directly utilized as a penalty weighting factor. Instead, a part of the competence area is extracted in accordance with the projection from a master node to a slave segment. In a complementary manner, a two-pass algorithm is used for the selected master nodes to achieve segment-wise force/moment equivalence. The results obtained using the proposed approach are introduced in a two-dimensional frictionless context. It is observed that the proposed approach passes the patch test. Furthermore, a significant improvement in accuracy compared to the conventional NTS and NTS-AR approaches is observed. We aim to extend the approach to three-dimensional applications in the future work.

Objective To identify racial/ethnic disparities in postnatal growth by year and gestational age among very low birth weight infants. Study design Total 37,122 infants, with birth weight 500–1500 g or gestational age 23–34 weeks in the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative in 2008–2016. Postnatal growth failure (PGF) was defined as change in weight Z-score from birth to discharge below −1.28. Multivariable regression analysis with birth hospital as random effect was used to estimate odds ratios (OR). Results Infants born to Hispanic mothers had highest risk of PGF at 30%, compared to white (24%, OR 1.33), Black (22%, OR 1.50), or Asian/Pacific Islander mothers (23%, OR 1.38). PGF incidence decreased from 2008 (27.4%) to 2016 (22.8%) with differences in trends by race. Each increasing gestational age week was associated with decreasing risk for PGF (OR 0.73, 95% confidence interval 0.72–0.74). Conclusion Targeted interventions addressing PGF are needed to address disparities.

Taste receptor cells are taste bud epithelial cells that are dependent upon the innervating nerve for continuous renewal and are maintained by resident tissue stem/progenitor cells. Transection of the innervating nerve causes degeneration of taste buds and taste receptor cells. However, a subset of the taste receptor cells is maintained without nerve contact after glossopharyngeal nerve transection in the circumvallate papilla in adult mice. Here, we revealed that injury caused by glossopharyngeal nerve transection triggers the remaining differentiated K8-positive taste receptor cells to dedifferentiate and acquire transient progenitor cell-like states during regeneration. Dedifferentiated taste receptor cells proliferate, express progenitor cell markers (K14, Sox2, PCNA) and form organoids in vitro. These data indicate that differentiated taste receptor cells can enter the cell cycle, acquire stemness, and participate in taste bud regeneration. We propose that dedifferentiated taste receptor cells in combination with stem/progenitor cells enhance the regeneration of taste buds following nerve injury.

In the SoUth Korean study to PrEvent cognitive impaiRment and protect BRAIN health through lifestyle intervention in at-risk elderly people (SUPERBRAIN), we evaluated the impact of a 24-week facility-based multidomain intervention (FMI) and home-based MI (HMI) on cortical thickness, brain volume, and the serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Totally, 152 participants, aged 60–79 years without dementia but with ≥ 1 modifiable dementia risk factor, were randomly assigned to the FMI, HMI, or control groups. Among them, 55 participants (20 FMI, 19 HMI, and 16 controls) underwent brain MRI at baseline and 24 weeks. We compared changes in global/regional mean cortical thickness at the region-of-interest (ROI) between the intervention and control groups. The changes in the total cortical gray matter volume and global mean cortical thickness were compared using analysis of covariance with age, sex, and education as covariates. ComBat site harmonization was applied for cortical thickness values across the scanners. ROI-based analysis was controlled for multiple comparisons, with a false discovery rate threshold of p p = 0.029). Compared with the control group, the mean global cortical thickness increased in the FMI group (0.033 ± 0.070 vs. − 0.003 ± 0.040, p = 0.013); particularly, cortical thickness of the bilateral frontotemporal lobes, cingulate gyri, and insula increased. The increase in cortical thickness and serum BDNF in the FMI group suggests that group preventive strategies at the facility may be beneficial through structural neuroplastic changes in brain areas, which facilitates learning and neurotrophic factors.

Low monoenergetic images obtained using noise-reduction techniques may reduce CT contrast media requirements. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of low-contrast-dose CT using dual-energy CT and deep learning-based denoising (DLD) techniques in patients at high risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).We performed a prospective, randomized controlled noninferiority trial at a tertiary hospital between June 2019 and August 2020 (NCT04027556). Patients at high risk of HCC were randomly assigned (1:1) to the standard-contrast-dose group or low-contrast-dose group, which targeted a 40% reduction in contrast medium dose based on lean body weight. HCC conspicuity on arterial phase images was the primary endpoint with a noninferiority margin of 0.2. Images were independently assessed by three radiologists; model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) images of the standard-contrast-dose group and low monoenergetic (50-keV) DLD images of the low-contrast-dose group were compared using a generalized estimating equation.Ninety participants (age 59 ± 10 years; 68 men) were analyzed. Compared with the standard-contrast-dose group (n = 47), 40% less contrast media was used in the low-contrast-dose group (n = 43) (107.0 ± 17.1 mL vs. 64.5 ± 11.3 mL, p0.001). In the arterial phase, HCC conspicuity on 50-keV DLD images in the low-contrast-dose group was noninferior to that of MBIR images in the standard-contrast-dose group (2.92 vs. 2.56; difference, 0.36; 95% confidence interval, -0.13 to ∞; p = 0.013).The contrast dose in liver CT can be reduced by 40% without impairing HCC conspicuity when using 50-keV and DLD techniques.• In the arterial phase, hepatocellular carcinoma conspicuity on 50-keV deep learning-based denoising images in the low-contrast-dose group was noninferior to that of model-based iterative reconstruction images in the standard-contrast-dose group. • HCC detection was comparable between 50-keV deep learning-based denoising images in the low-contrast-dose group and model-based iterative reconstruction images in the standard-contrast-dose group.

Benzyl benzoate (BB) is widely used in the food, cosmetics, agriculture, and pharmaceutical industries and is discharged into the aquatic environment via various water sources, including wastewater. Research on the bioaccumulation and possible toxicity of BB has been conducted, but the biochemical responses to BB toxicity are not fully understood, and the specific molecular pathways by which BB causes toxicity remain unknown. In this study, label-free quantitative proteomics based on mass spectrometry was applied to investigate protein profiles in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos exposed to BB (1 µg/mL) for 7 days. A total of 83 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified, including 49 up-regulated and 34 down-regulated proteins. The biological functions of proteins regulated by BB were grouped into functional categories and subcategories, including the biosynthesis of organonitrogen compound biosynthetic process, translation, amide biosynthetic process, lipid transport, stress response, and cytoskeletal activity. The results provide novel insight into the molecular basis of the ecotoxicity of BB in aquatic ecosystems.

To investigate the effects of deep learning-based imaging reconstruction (DLR) on the image quality of MRI of rectal cancer after chemoradiotherapy (CRT), and its accuracy in diagnosing pathological complete responses (pCR).We included 39 patients (men: women, 21:18; mean age ± standard deviation, 59.1 ± 9.7 years) with mid-to-lower rectal cancer who underwent a long-course of CRT and high-resolution rectal MRIs between January 2020 and April 2021. Axial T2WI was reconstructed using the conventional method (MRIThirty-four patients did not have a pCR whereas five (12.8%) had pCR. Compared with the SNR of MRIDLR produced MR images with higher resolution and SNR. The specificity of MRI for identification of pCR was significantly higher with DLR than with conventional MRI.

Screen printing has been adopted for fabricating a wide variety of electronic devices. However, the printing defects and reliability have been an obstacle for industrialization of printed electronics. In this research, the artificial intelligence (AI) model was developed and integrated with the in-house roll-to-roll screen printing system to detect smearing defect, which is one of the main defects of screen printing. The U-Net architecture was adopted, and a total of 19 models were designed with model sizes ranging from 8E + 3 to 3E + 7 number of parameters. Their performances as validation mean Intersection over Union (IoU) were analyzed, and the optimal model was chosen with a validation mean IoU of 95.1% and a number of parameters of 8E + 6. The printed line images were evaluated by the AI model for various printing conditions, such as printed line widths, printing paste premixing, printing speeds, and printed line directions, which showed that the model could effectively detect the smearing defects. Also, the AI model capabilities were investigated for repeated printing, which demonstrated that it can be used for the reliability assessment of the screen printing process.

Since an impaired coronary blood supply following myocardial infarction (MI) negatively affects heart function, therapeutic neovascularization is considered one of the major therapeutic strategies for cell-based cardiac repair. Here, to more effectively achieve therapeutic neovascularization in ischemic hearts, we developed a dual stem cell approach for effective vascular regeneration by utilizing two distinct types of stem cells, CD31+-endothelial cells derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC-ECs) and engineered human mesenchymal stem cells that continuously secrete stromal derived factor-1α (SDF-eMSCs), to simultaneously promote natal vasculogenesis and angiogenesis, two core mechanisms of neovascularization. To induce more comprehensive vascular regeneration, we intramyocardially injected hiPSC-ECs to produce de novo vessels, possibly via vasculogenesis, and a 3D cardiac patch encapsulating SDF-eMSCs (SDF-eMSC-PA) to enhance angiogenesis through prolonged secretion of paracrine factors, including SDF-1α, was implanted into the epicardium of ischemic hearts. We verified that hiPSC-ECs directly contribute to de novo vessel formation in ischemic hearts, resulting in enhanced cardiac function. In addition, the concomitant implantation of SDF1α-eMSC-PAs substantially improved the survival, retention, and vasculogenic potential of hiPSC-ECs, ultimately achieving more comprehensive neovascularization in the MI hearts. Of note, the newly formed vessels through the dual stem cell approach were significantly larger and more functional than those formed by hiPSC-ECs alone. In conclusion, these results provide compelling evidence that our strategy for effective vascular regeneration can be an effective means to treat ischemic heart disease.

Among various human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs), the HERV-K (HML-2) group has been reported to be highly related to cancer. In pancreatic cancer cells, shRNA-mediated downregulation of HERV-K env RNA decreases cell proliferation and tumor growth through the RAS-ERK-RSK pathway; in colorectal cancer, CRISPR-Cas9 knockout (KO) of the HERV-K env gene affects tumorigenic characteristics through the nupr-1 gene.The effect of HERV-K env KO has not been studied in ovarian cancer cell lines. In this study, we analyzed the tumorigenic characteristics of ovarian cancer cell lines, including cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, and the expression patterns of related proteins after CRISPR-Cas9 KO of the HERV-K env gene.The HERV-K env gene KO was achieved using the CRISPR-Cas9 system in ovarian cancer cell lines SKOV3 and OVCAR3. Tumorigenic characteristics including cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were analyzed, and related protein expression was investigated by western blot analysis.The expression of the HERV-K env gene in KO cells was significantly reduced at RNA and protein levels, and tumorigenic characteristics including cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were significantly reduced. In HERV-K env KO SKOV3 cells, the expression of the RB protein was significantly up-regulated and the cyclin B1 protein level was significantly reduced. In contrast, in HERV-K env KO OVCAR3 cells, the level of phospho-RB protein was significantly reduced, but other protein levels were not changed.The results of this study showed that HERV-K env gene KO affects cell proliferation, invasion, and migration of ovarian cells through RB and Cyclin B1 proteins, but the specific regulation pattern can differ by cell line.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an understudied cause of myocardial infarction primarily affecting women. It is not known to what extent SCAD is genetically distinct from other cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD). Here we present a genome-wide association meta-analysis (1,917 cases and 9,292 controls) identifying 16 risk loci for SCAD. Integrative functional annotations prioritized genes that are likely to be regulated in vascular smooth muscle cells and artery fibroblasts and implicated in extracellular matrix biology. One locus containing the tissue factor gene F3, which is involved in blood coagulation cascade initiation, appears to be specific for SCAD risk. Several associated variants have diametrically opposite associations with CAD, suggesting that shared biological processes contribute to both diseases, but through different mechanisms. We also infer a causal role for high blood pressure in SCAD. Our findings provide novel pathophysiological insights involving arterial integrity and tissue-mediated coagulation in SCAD and set the stage for future specific therapeutics and preventions.

Vascular aging is well known to be associated with the breakdown of the neurovascular unit (NVU), which is essential for maintaining brain homeostasis and linked to higher cognitive dysfunction. Oxidative stress is believed to be a significant cause of the vascular aging process. Vitamin C is easily oxidized under physiological conditions, so it loses its potent antioxidant activity. We developed a DNA aptamer that enhances the function of vitamin C. NXP032 is the binding form of the aptamer and vitamin C. In this study, we investigated the effect of NXP032 on neurovascular stabilization through the changes of PECAM-1, PDGFR-β, ZO-1, laminin, and glial cells involved in maintaining the integrity of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) in aged mice. NXP032 was orally administered daily for 8 weeks. Compared to young mice and NXP032-treated mice, 20-month-old mice displayed cognitive impairments in Y-maze and passive avoidance tests. NXP032 treatment contributed to reducing the BBB damage by attenuating the fragmentation of microvessels and reducing PDGFR-β, ZO-1, and laminin expression, thereby mitigating astrocytes and microglia activation during normal aging. Based on the results, we suggest that NXP032 reduces vascular aging and may be a novel intervention for aging-induced cognitive impairment.

Background Leaf explants are major materials in plant tissue cultures. Incubation of detached leaves on phytohormone-containing media, which is an important process for producing calli and regenerating plants, change their cell fate. Although hormone signaling pathways related to cell fate transition have been widely studied, other molecular and physiological events occurring in leaf explants during this process remain largely unexplored. Results Here, we identified that ethylene signals modulate expression of pathogen resistance genes and anthocyanin accumulation in leaf explants, affecting their survival during culture. Anthocyanins accumulated in leaf explants, but were not observed near the wound site. Ethylene signaling mutant analysis revealed that ethylene signals are active and block anthocyanin accumulation in the wound site. Moreover, expression of defense-related genes increased, particularly near the wound site, implying that ethylene induces defense responses possibly by blocking pathogenesis via wounding. We also found that anthocyanin accumulation in non-wounded regions is required for drought resistance in leaf explants. Conclusions Our study revealed the key roles of ethylene in the regulation of defense gene expression and anthocyanin biosynthesis in leaf explants. Our results suggest a survival strategy of detached leaves, which can be applied to improve the longevity of explants during tissue culture.

Background Birt-Hogg-Dubé (BHD) syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by fibrofolliculomas, renal tumors, pulmonary cysts, and recurrent pneumothorax. Pulmonary cysts are the cause of recurrent pneumothorax, which is one of the most important factors influencing patient quality of life. It is unknown whether pulmonary cysts progress with time or influence pulmonary function in patients with BHD syndrome. This study investigated whether pulmonary cysts progress during long-term follow-up (FU) by using thoracic computed tomography (CT) and whether pulmonary function declines during FU. We also evaluated risk factors for pneumothorax in patients with BHD during FU. Methods Our retrospective cohort included 43 patients with BHD (25 women; mean age, 54.2 ± 11.7 years). We evaluated whether cysts progress by visual assessment and quantitative volume analysis using initial and serial thoracic CT. The visual assessment included the size, location, number, shape, distribution, presence of a visible wall, fissural or subpleural cysts, and air-cuff signs. In CT data obtained from a 1-mm section from 17 patients, the quantitative assessment was performed by measuring the volume of the low attenuation area using in-house software. We evaluated whether the pulmonary function declined with time on serial pulmonary function tests (PFT). Risk factors for pneumothorax were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Results On visual assessment, the largest cyst in the right lung showed a significant interval increase in size (1.0 mm/year, p = 0.0015; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.42–1.64) between the initial and final CT, and the largest cyst in the left lung also showed significant interval increase in size (0.8 mm/year, p p Conclusions The size of pulmonary cysts progressed over time in longitudinal follow-up thoracic CT in patients with BHD, and pulmonary function had slightly deteriorated by longitudinal follow-up PFT.

Background Few trials have compared the results of surgical treatment for peri-implantitis based on severity of peri-implantitis and surgical method. This study investigated the survival rate of implants based on type of surgical method used and initial severity of peri-implantitis. Classification of severity was determined based on bone loss rate relative to fixture length. Methods Medical records of patients who underwent peri-implantitis surgery from July 2003 to April 2021 were identified. Classification of peri-implantitis was divided into 3 groups (stage 1: bone loss 50%) and performance of resective or regenerative surgery was investigated. Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox hazards proportional models were used to analyze the cumulative survival rate of implants. Median survival time, predicted mean survival time, hazard ratio (HR), and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. Results Based on Kaplan-Meier analysis, 89 patients and 227 implants were included, and total median postoperative survival duration was 8.96 years. Cumulative survival rates for stage 1, 2, and 3 were 70.7%, 48.9%, and 21.3%, respectively. The mean survival time for implants in stage 1, 2, and 3 was 9.95 years, 7.96 years, and 5.67 years, respectively, with statistically significant difference (log-rank p-value Conclusions The initial bone loss rate relative to the fixture length significantly correlated with the outcome after peri-implantitis surgery, demonstrating a notable difference in the long-term survival rate. Difference was not found between resective surgery and regenerative surgery in implant survival time. Bone loss rate could be utilized as a reliable diagnostic tool for evaluating prognosis after surgical treatment, regardless of surgical method used. Trial registration Retrospectively registered. Background CT prediction of resectability and prognosis following neoadjuvant treatment (NAT) in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains challenging. This study aims to determine whether addition of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) postiron emission tomography (PET)/MRI and carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19–9 to contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) can improve accuracy of predicting resectability compared to CECT alone and predict prognosis in PDAC patients after NAT. Methods In this retrospective study, 120 PDAC patients (65 women; mean age, 66.7 years [standard deviation, 8.4]) underwent CECT, PET/MRI, and CA 19–9 examinations after NAT between January 2013 and June 2021. Three board-certified radiologists independently rated the overall resectability on a 5-point scale (score 5, definitely resectable) in three sessions (session 1, CECT; 2, CECT plus PET/MRI─no FDG avidity and no diffusion restriction at tumor-vessel contact indicated modification of CECT scores to ≥ 3; 3, CECT plus PET plus CA 19–9─no FDG avidity at tumor-vessel contact and normalized CA 19–9 indicated modification of CECT scores to ≥ 3). Jackknife free-response receiver operating characteristic method and generalized estimating equations were used to compare pooled area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity of three sessions. Predictors for recurrence-free survival (RFS) were assessed using Cox regression analyses. Results Each session showed different pooled AUC (session 1 vs. 2 vs. 3, 0.853 vs. 0.873 vs. 0.874, p = 0.026), sensitivity (66.2% [137/207] vs. 86.0% [178/207] vs. 84.5% [175/207], p p = 0.048). According to pairwise comparison, specificity of CECT plus PET/MRI was lower than that of CECT alone (adjusted p = 0.042), while there was no significant difference in specificity between CECT alone and CECT plus PET plus CA 19–9 (adjusted p = 0.081). Twenty-eight of 69 patients (40.6%) with R0 resection experienced tumor recurrence (mean follow-up, 18.0 months). FDG avidity at tumor-vessel contact on post-NAT PET (HR = 4.37, p = 0.033) and pathologically confirmed vascular invasion (HR = 5.36, p = 0.004) predicted RFS. Conclusion Combination of CECT, PET and CA 19–9 increased area under the curve and sensitivity for determining resectability, compared to CECT alone, without compromising the specificity. Furthermore, 18F-FDG avidity at tumor-vessel contact on post-NAT PET predicted RFS.

Nonthermal irreversible electroporation (NTIRE) is emerging as a promising tissue ablation technique. However, maintaining irreversible electroporation (IRE) electrodes against displacement during strong esophageal spasms remains an obstacle. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of newly designed balloon-type endoscopic IRE catheters. Six pigs were randomly allocated to each catheter group, and each pig was subjected to four ablations at alternating voltages of 1500 V and 2000 V. Esophagogastroscopy was performed during the IRE. The ability of balloon-type catheters to execute complete IRE with 40 pulses was assessed. The success rate was higher for the balloon-type catheter than that for the basket-type (12/12 [100%] vs. 2/12 [16.7%], p 2 vs. 140.8 mm2, p = 0.004) and greater damage depth (476 μm vs. 900 μm, p = 0.02). Histopathology of the ablated tissue revealed separated epithelium, inflamed lamina propria, congested muscularis mucosa, necrotized submucosa, and disorganized muscularis propria. Balloon-type catheters demonstrated efficacy, achieving full electrical pulse sequences under NTIRE conditions, and a safe histological profile below 2000 V (1274 V/cm). Optimal electrical conditions and electrode arrays pose ongoing challenges.

The development of memory devices with functions that simultaneously process and store data is required for efficient computation. To achieve this, artificial synaptic devices have been proposed because they can construct hybrid networks with biological neurons and perform neuromorphic computation. However, irreversible aging of these electrical devices causes unavoidable performance degradation. Although several photonic approaches to controlling currents have been suggested, suppression of current levels and switching of analog conductance in a simple photonic manner remain challenging. Here, we demonstrated a nanograin network memory using reconfigurable percolation paths in a single Si nanowire with solid core/porous shell and pure solid core segments. The electrical and photonic control of current percolation paths enabled the analog and reversible adjustment of the persistent current level, exhibiting memory behavior and current suppression in this single nanowire device. In addition, the synaptic behaviors of memory and erasure were demonstrated through potentiation and habituation processes. Photonic habituation was achieved using laser illumination on the porous nanowire shell, with a linear decrease in the postsynaptic current. Furthermore, synaptic elimination was emulated using two adjacent devices interconnected on a single nanowire. Therefore, electrical and photonic reconfiguration of the conductive paths in Si nanograin networks will pave the way for next-generation nanodevice technologies.
