In 1935, Erdos proved that all natural numbers can be written as a sum of a square of a prime and a square-free number. In 1939, Pillai derived an asymptotic formula for the number of such representations. The mathematical review of Pillai’s paper stated that the proof of the above result contained inaccuracies, thus casting a doubt on the correctness of the paper. In this paper, we re-examine Pillai’s paper and show that his argument was essentially correct. Afterwards, we improve the error term in Pillai’s theorem using the Bombieri–Vinogradov theorem.

It is shown that unbranched proper holomorphic maps between pseudoconvex domains with smooth C∞ boundaries, one of which satisfies subelliptic estimates for the\(\bar \partial\)-Neumann problem on (0,1)-forms, extend to unbranched C∞-coverings between the closures of the domains.

In this short paper I describe special situations where a local ring is normally flat along a divisorial prime ideal.

Special units are a sort of predecessor of Euler systems, and they are mainly used to obtain annihilators for class groups. So one is interested in finding as many special units as possible (actually we use a technical generalization called “semispecial”). In this paper we show that in any abelian field having a real genus field in the narrow sense all Washington units are semispecial, and that a slightly weaker statement holds true for all abelian fields. The group of Washington units is very often larger than Sinnott’s group of cyclotomic units. In a companion paper we will show that in concrete families of abelian fields the group of Washington units is much larger than that of Sinnott units, by giving lower bounds on the index. Combining this with the present paper gives strong annihilation results.

Let X and Y be two Banach spaces. A bounded operator $$T: X \longrightarrow Y$$ is said to be a BS-compact operator whenever T sends Banach-Saks subsets of X onto norm compact sets of Y. In this paper, our central focus is upon introducing the class of almost BS-compact operators. The paper rests essentially on two parts. The first is devoted to the connection of this new class of operators with classical notions of operators, such as BS-compact operators, AM-compact operators, and Dunfort-Pettis operators. The second part is dedicated to the domination problem within the framework of (almost) BS-compact operators.

In this paper, we revisit the performance of theα-synchronizer in distributed systems with probabilistic message loss as introduced in Függer et al. [Perf. Eval. 93(2015)]. In sharp contrast to the infinite-state Markov chain resp. the exponential-size finite-state upper bound presented in the original paper, we introduce a polynomial-size finite-state Markov chain for a new synchronizer variant$\alpha ^{\prime }$α′, which provides a new upper bound on the performance of theα-synchronizer. Both analytic and simulation results show that our new upper bound is strictly better than the existing one. Moreover, we show that a modified version of the$\alpha ^{\prime }$α′-synchronizer provides a lower bound on the performance of theα-synchronizer. By means of elaborate simulation results, we show that our new lower bound is also strictly better than the lower bound presented in the original paper.

In a previous paper by the author, a family of iterations for computing the matrix square root was constructed by exploiting a recursion obeyed by Zolotarev’s rational minimax approximants of the function $$z^{1/2}$$. The present paper generalizes this construction by deriving rational minimax iterations for the matrix pth root, where $$p \ge 2$$ is an integer. The analysis of these iterations is considerably different from the case $$p=2$$, owing to the fact that when $$p>2$$, rational minimax approximants of the function $$z^{1/p}$$ do not obey a recursion. Nevertheless, we show that several of the salient features of the Zolotarev iterations for the matrix square root, including equioscillatory error, order of convergence, and stability, carry over to the case $$p>2$$. A key role in the analysis is played by the asymptotic behavior of rational minimax approximants on short intervals. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the predictions of the theory.

In the direction towards the question when mixed multiplicities are equal to the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of joint reductions, this paper not only generalizes [28, Theorem 3.1] that covers the Rees's theorem [13, Theorem 2.4], but also removes the hypothesis that joint reductions are systems of parameters in [28, Theorem 3.1]. The results of the paper seem to make the problem of expressing mixed multiplicities into the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of joint reductions become closer., 15 pages

We prove a new effective Chebotarev density theorem for Galois extensions $L/\mathbb{Q}$ that allows one to count small primes (even as small as an arbitrarily small power of the discriminant of $L$); this theorem holds for the Galois closures of "almost all" number fields that lie in an appropriate family of field extensions. Previously, applying Chebotarev in such small ranges required assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. The error term in this new Chebotarev density theorem also avoids the effect of an exceptional zero of the Dedekind zeta function of $L$, without assuming GRH. We give many different "appropriate families," including families of arbitrarily large degree. To do this, we first prove a new effective Chebotarev density theorem that requires a zero-free region of the Dedekind zeta function. Then we prove that almost all number fields in our families yield such a zero-free region. The innovation that allows us to achieve this is a delicate new method for controlling zeroes of certain families of non-cuspidal $L$-functions. This builds on, and greatly generalizes the applicability of, work of Kowalski and Michel on the average density of zeroes of a family of cuspidal $L$-functions. A surprising feature of this new method, which we expect will have independent interest, is that we control the number of zeroes in the family of $L$-functions by bounding the number of certain associated fields with fixed discriminant. As an application of the new Chebotarev density theorem, we prove the first nontrivial upper bounds for $\ell$-torsion in class groups, for all integers $\ell \geq 1$, applicable to infinite families of fields of arbitrarily large degree., Comment: 52 pages. In this paper we study the set of digit frequencies that are realised by elements of the set of $$\beta $$ -expansions. The main result of this paper demonstrates that as $$\beta $$ approaches 1, the set of digit frequencies that occur amongst the set of $$\beta $$ -expansions fills out the simplex. As an application of our main result, we obtain upper bounds for the local dimension of certain biased Bernoulli convolutions.

The Hermite–Hadamard inequality was extended using iterated integrals by Retkes [Acta Sci Math (Szeged) 74:95–106, 2008]. In this paper we further extend the main results of the above paper for convex and also for s-convex functions in the second sense.

The link between Vandiver’s conjecture and Gauss sums is well known since the papers of Iwasawa (Symposia Mathematica, vol 15, Academic Press, pp 447–459, 1975), Thaine (Mich Math J 42(2):311–344, 1995; Trans Am Math Soc 351(12):4769–4790, 1999) and Angles and Nuccio (Acta Arith 142(3):199–218, 2010). This conjecture is required in many subjects and we shall give such examples of relevant references. In this paper, we recall our interpretation of Vandiver’s conjecture in terms of minus part of the torsion of the Galois group of the maximal abelian p-ramified pro-p-extension of the p-th cyclotomic field (Sur la p-ramification abelienne (1984) vol. 20, pp. 1–26). Then we provide a specific use of Gauss sums of characters of order p of $${\mathbb {F}}_\ell ^\times $$ and prove new criteria for Vandiver’s conjecture to hold (Theorem 2 (a) using both the sets of exponents of p-irregularity and of p-primarity of suitable twists of the Gauss sums, and Theorem 2 (b) which does not need the knowledge of Bernoulli numbers or cyclotomic units). We propose in §5.2 new heuristics showing that any counterexample to the conjecture leads to excessive constraints modulo p on the above twists as $$\ell $$ varies and suggests analytical approaches to evidence. We perform numerical experiments to strengthen our arguments in the direction of the very probable truth of Vandiver’s conjecture and to inspire future research. The calculations with their PARI/GP programs are given in appendices.

This paper is concerned with exact results for the final outcome of stochastic SIR (susceptible $\rightarrow $ infective $\rightarrow $ recovered) epidemics among a closed, finite and homogeneously mixing population. The factorial moments of the number of initial susceptibles who ultimately avoid infection by such an epidemic are shown to be intimately related to the concept of a susceptibility set. This connection leads to simple, probabilistically illuminating proofs of exact results concerning the total size and severity of collective Reed–Frost epidemic processes, in terms of Gontcharoff polynomials, first obtained in a series of papers by Claude Lefevre and Philippe Picard. The proofs extend easily to include general final state random variables defined on SIR epidemics, and also to multitype epidemics.

In this paper our aim is to show some new inequalities of the Redheffer type for Bessel and modified Bessel functions of the first kind. The key tools in our proofs are some classical results on the monotonicity of quotients of differentiable functions as well as on the monotonicity of quotients of two power series. We also use some known results on the quotients of Bessel and modified Bessel functions of the first kind, and by using the monotonicity of the Dirichlet eta function we prove a sharp inequality for the tangent function. At the end of the paper a conjecture is stated, which may be of interest for further research.

In the authors' first paper, Beurling-Rudin-Korenbljum type characterization of the closed ideals in a certain algebra of holomorphic functions was used to describe the lattice of invariant subspaces of the shift plus a complex Volterra operator. Current work is an extension of the previous work and it describes the lattice of invariant subspaces of the shift plus a positive integer multiple of the complex Volterra operator on the Hardy space. Our work was motivated by a paper by Ong who studied the real version of the same operator., We deleted a proposition and a corollary from section 4, and simplified the proof of the main theorem. **The article has been published in Archiv der Mathematik**

This paper studies the relationship between Argumentation Logic (AL), a recently defined logic based on the study of argumentation in AI, and classical Propositional Logic (PL). In particular, it shows that AL and PL are logically equivalent in that they have the same entailment relation from any given classically consistent theory. This equivalence follows from a correspondence between the non-acceptability of (arguments for) sentences in AL and Natural Deduction (ND) proofs of the complement of these sentences. The proof of this equivalence uses a restricted form of ND proofs, where hypotheses in the application of the Reductio of Absurdum inference rule are required to be “relevant” to the absurdity derived in the rule. The paper also discusses how the argumentative re-interpretation of PL could help control the application of ex-falso quodlibet in the presence of inconsistencies. © 2017 The Author(s) 1 43 Article in Press

Let λK m,n be a complete bipartite multigraph with two partite sets having m and n vertices, respectively. A K p,q -factorization of λK m,n is a set of edge-disjoint K p,q -factors of λK m,n which partition the set of edges of λK m,n . When p = 1 and q is a prime number, Wang, in his paper [On K 1,q -factorization of complete bipartite graph, Discrete Math., 126: (1994), 359-364], investigated the K 1,q -factorization of K m,n and gave a sufficient condition for such a factorization to exist. In papers [K 1,k -factorization of complete bipartite graphs, Discrete Math., 259: 301-306 (2002),; K p,q -factorization of complete bipartite graphs, Sci. China Ser. A-Math., 47: (2004), 473-479], Du and Wang extended Wang’s result to the case that p and q are any positive integers. In this paper, we give a sufficient condition for λK m,n to have a K p,q -factorization. As a special case, it is shown that the necessary condition for the K p,q -factorization of λK m,n is always sufficient when p : q = k : (k + 1) for any positive integer k.

The goal of this paper is to point out that the results obtained in the recent papers (Chen and Song in Nonlinear Anal 72:1895–1901, 2010; Chu in J Math Anal Appl 327:1041–1045, 2007; Chu et al. in Nonlinear Anal 59:1001–1011, 2004a, J. Math Anal Appl 289:666–672, 2004b) can be seriously strengthened in the sense that we can significantly relax the assumptions of the main results so that we still get the same conclusions. In order to do this first, we prove that for $$n \ge 3$$ any transformation which preserves the n-norm of any n vectors is automatically plus-minus linear. This will give a re-proof of the well-known Mazur–Ulam-type result that every n-isometry is automatically affine ( $$n \ge 2$$ ) which was proven in several papers, e.g. in Chu et al. (Nonlinear Anal 70:1068–1074, 2009). Second, following the work of Rassias and Semrl (Proc Am Math Soc 118:919–925, 1993), we provide the solution of a natural Aleksandrov-type problem in n-normed spaces, namely, we show that every surjective transformation which preserves the unit n-distance in both directions ( $$n\ge 2$$ ) is automatically an n-isometry.

In this paper, we give a proof of the Gan–Gross–Prasad conjecture for the discrete series of U(p, q). There are three themes in this paper: branching laws of a small $$A_{\mathfrak {q}}(\lambda )$$ , branching laws of discrete series and inductive construction of discrete series. These themes are linked together by a reciprocity law and the notion of invariant tensor product.

Recently, Bandeira [arXiv:1509.00824] introduced a new type of algorithm (the so-called probably certifiably correct algorithm) that combines fast solvers with the optimality certificates provided by convex relaxations. In this paper, we devise such an algorithm for the problem of k-means clustering. First, we prove that Peng and Wei's semidefinite relaxation of k-means is tight with high probability under a distribution of planted clusters called the stochastic ball model. Our proof follows from a new dual certificate for integral solutions of this semidefinite program. Next, we show how to test the optimality of a proposed k-means solution using this dual certificate in quasilinear time. Finally, we analyze a version of spectral clustering from Peng and Wei that is designed to solve k-means in the case of two clusters. In particular, we show that this quasilinear-time method typically recovers planted clusters under the stochastic ball model., Major revision from previous version. The Farey sequence of order n consists of all reduced fractions a / b between 0 and 1 with positive denominator b less or equal to n. The sums of the inverse denominators 1 / b of the Farey fractions in prescribed intervals with rational bounds have a simple main term, but the deviations are determined by an interesting sequence of polygonal functions \(f_n\). In a former paper we obtained a limit function for \(n \rightarrow \infty \), which describes a scaling behaviour of the functions \(f_n\) in the vicinity of any fixed rational number a / b and which is independent of a / b. In this paper we prove that \(f_n(a/b)\) tends to zero for \(n \rightarrow \infty \) by using elementary representation formulas for \(f_n(a/b)\) as well as a variant of the prime number theorem. An application of this result immediately gives a global version of the scaling behaviour of the functions \(f_n\) around the rational numbers.

In our previous paper, given an integral log smooth morphism $X\to S$ of fine log schemes of characteristic $p>0$, we studied the Azumaya nature of the sheaf of log differential operators of higher level and constructed a splitting module of it under an existence of a certain lifting modulo $p^{2}$. In this paper, under a certain liftability assumption which is stronger than our previous paper, we construct another splitting module of our Azumaya algebra over a scalar extension, which is smaller than our previous paper. As an application, we construct an equivalence, which we call the log local Cartier transform of higher level, between certain $\cal D$-modules and certain Higgs modules. We also discuss about the compatibility of the log Frobenius descent and the log local Cartier transform and the relation between the splitting module constructed in this paper and that constructed in the previous paper. Our result can be considered as a generalization of the result of Ogus-Vologodsky, Gros-Le Stum-Quir��s to the case of log schemes and that of Schepler to the case of higher level.

In [22] (Tong-Viet H P, Simple classical groups of Lie type are determined by their character degrees, J. Algebra, 357 (2012) 61–68), the following question arose: Which groups can be uniquely determined by the structure of their complex group algebras? The authors in [12] (Khosravi B et al., Some extensions of PSL(2,p 2) are uniquely determined by their complex group algebras, Comm. Algebra, 43(8) (2015) 3330–3341) proved that each extension of PSL(2,p 2) of order 2|PSL(2,p 2)| is uniquely determined by its complex group algebra. In this paper we continue this work. Let p be an odd prime number and q = p or q = p 3. Let M be a finite group such that |M| = h|PSL(2,q), where h is a divisor of |Out(PSL(2,q))|. Also suppose that M has an irreducible character of degree q and 2p does not divide the degree of any irreducible character of M. As the main result of this paper we prove that M has a unique nonabelian composition factor which is isomorphic to PSL(2,q). As a consequence of our result we prove that M is uniquely determined by its order and some information on its character degrees which implies that M is uniquely determined by the structure of its complex group algebra.

This paper is concerned with problems in the context of the theoretical foundation of adaptive algorithms for the numerical treatment of operator equations. It is well-known that the analysis of such schemes naturally leads to function spaces of Besov type. But, especially when dealing with equations on non-smooth manifolds, the definition of these spaces is not straightforward. Nevertheless, motivated by applications, recently Besov-type spaces $$B^\alpha _{\Psi ,q}(L_p(\Gamma ))$$ on certain two-dimensional, patchwise smooth surfaces were defined and employed successfully. In the present paper, we extend this definition (based on wavelet expansions) to a quite general class of d-dimensional manifolds and investigate some analytical properties of the resulting quasi-Banach spaces. In particular, we prove that different prominent constructions of biorthogonal wavelet systems $$\Psi $$ on domains or manifolds $$\Gamma $$ which admit a decomposition into smooth patches actually generate the same Besov-type function spaces $$B^\alpha _{\Psi ,q}(L_p(\Gamma ))$$ , provided that their univariate ingredients possess a sufficiently large order of cancellation and regularity. For this purpose, a theory of almost diagonal matrices on related sequence spaces $$b^\alpha _{p,q}(\nabla )$$ of Besov type is developed.

We investigate the structure of the degrees of provability, which measure the proof-theoretic strength of statements asserting the totality of given computable functions. The degrees of provability can also be seen as an extension of the investigation of relative consistency statements for first-order arithmetic (which can be viewed as Π10 -statements, whereas statements of totality of computable functions are Π20 -statements); and the structure of the degrees of provability can be viewed as the Lindenbaum algebra of true Π20 -statements in first-order arithmetic. Our work continues and greatly expands the second author’s paper on this topic by answering a number of open questions from that paper, comparing three different notions of a jump operator and studying jump inversion as well as the corresponding high/low hierarchies, investigating the structure of true Π10 -statements as a substructure, and connecting the degrees of provability to escape and domination properties of computable functions.

The commuting graph of a finite non-commutative semigroup S, denoted G(S), is a simple graph whose vertices are the non-central elements of S and two distinct vertices x, y are adjacent if xy = yx. Let I(X) be the symmetric inverse semigroup of partial injective transformations on a finite set X. The semigroup I(X) has the symmetric group Sym(X) of permutations on X as its group of units. In 1989, Burns and Goldsmith determined the clique number of the commuting graph of Sym(X). In 2008, Iranmanesh and Jafarzadeh found an upper bound of the diameter of G(Sym(X)), and in 2011, Dolžan and Oblak claimed that this upper bound is in fact the exact value. The goal of this paper is to begin the study of the commuting graph of the symmetric inverse semigroup I(X). We calculate the clique number of G(I(X)), the diameters of the commuting graphs of the proper ideals of I(X), and the diameter of G(I(X)) when |X| is even or a power of an odd prime. We show that when |X| is odd and divisible by at least two primes, then the diameter of G(I(X)) is either 4 or 5. In the process, we obtain several results about semigroups, such as a description of all commutative subsemigroups of I(X) of maximum order, and analogous results for commutative inverse and commutative nilpotent subsemigroups of I(X). The paper closes with a number of problems for experts in combinatorics and in group or semigroup theory.

Let $R$ be a commutative (Noetherian) local ring of prime characteristic $p$ that is $F$-pure. This paper is concerned with comparison of three finite sets of radical ideals of $R$, one of which is only defined in the case when $R$ is $F$-finite (that is, is finitely generated when viewed as a module over itself via the Frobenius homomorphism). Two of the afore-mentioned three sets have links to tight closure, via test ideals. Among the aims of the paper are a proof that two of the sets are equal, and a proposal for a generalization of I. Let X be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension n equipped with a very ample Hermitian line bundle L. In the first part of the paper, we show that if there exists a toric degeneration of X satisfying some natural hypotheses (which are satisfied in many settings), then there exists a completely integrable system on X in the sense of symplectic geometry. More precisely, we construct a collection of real-valued functions H_1, ... H_n on X which are continuous on all of X, smooth on an open dense subset U of X, and pairwise Poisson-commute on U. Moreover, we show that in many cases, we can construct the integrable system so that the functions H_1, ..., H_n generate a Hamiltonian torus action on U. In the second part, we show that the toric degenerations arising in the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies satisfy all the hypotheses of the first part of the paper. In this case the image of the "moment map" \mu = (H_1, ..., H_n): X to R^n is precisely the Okounkov body \Delta = \Delta(R, v) associated to the homogeneous coordinate ring R of X, and an appropriate choice of a valuation v on R. Our main technical tools come from algebraic geometry, differential (Kaehler) geometry, and analysis. Specifically, we use the gradient-Hamiltonian vector field, and a subtle generalization of the famous Lojasiewicz gradient inequality for real-valued analytic functions. Since our construction is valid for a large class of projective varieties X, this manuscript provides a rich source of new examples of integrable systems. We discuss concrete examples, including elliptic curves, flag varieties of arbitrary connected complex reductive groups, spherical varieties, and weight varieties., Comment: 44 pages. Final version. Then Romaguera (Math. Sci. Appl. E-Notes 1: 1-8, 2013) used this contraction to obtain some multivalued fixed point results on partial metric spaces. In the present work, we give a fixed point result on weak partial metric spaces using this new idea. The purpose of this paper is to present a new iteration method based on the hybrid method in mathematical programming, extragradient method, and Mann’s method for finding a common element of the solution set of equilibrium problems, the solution set of variational inequality problems for a monotone, Lipschitz continuous mapping and the set of fixed points for a nonexpansive semigroup in Hilbert spaces. We obtain a strong convergence theorem for the sequences generated by this process. The results in this paper generalize and extend some well-known strong convergence theorems in the literature.

In this paper we prove three conjectures on congruences involving central binomial coefficients or Lucas sequences. Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $a$ be a positive integer. We show that if $p\equiv 1\pmod{4}$ or $a>1$ then $$ \sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor\frac34p^a\rfloor}\binom{-1/2}k\equiv\left(\frac{2}{p^a}\right)\pmod{p^2}, $$ where $(-)$ denotes the Jacobi symbol. This confirms a conjecture of the second author. We also confirm a conjecture of R. For $$\lambda \in P_+$$ , let $$L(\lambda )$$ be the integrable, highest weight (irreducible) representation of $$\mathfrak {g}$$ with highest weight $$\lambda $$ . For a positive integer $$s$$ , define the saturated tensor semigroup as $$\begin{aligned} \Gamma _s:= \{(\lambda _1, \dots , \lambda _s,\mu )\in P_+^{s+1}: \exists \, N\ge 1 \,\text {with}\,L(N\mu )\subset L(N\lambda _1)\otimes \dots \otimes L(N\lambda _s)\}. \end{aligned}$$ The aim of this paper is to begin a systematic study of $$\Gamma _s$$ in the infinite dimensional symmetrizable Kac-Moody case. In this paper, we produce a set of necessary inequalities satisfied by $$\Gamma _s$$ . These inequalities are indexed by products in $$H^*(G^{\mathrm{min }}/B; \mathbb {Z})$$ for $$B$$ the standard Borel subgroup, where $$G^{\mathrm{min }}$$ is the ‘minimal’ Kac-Moody group with Lie algebra $$\mathfrak {g}$$ . The proof relies on the Kac-Moody analogue of the Borel-Weil theorem and Geometric Invariant Theory (specifically the Hilbert-Mumford index). In the case that $$\mathfrak {g}$$ is affine of rank 2, we show that these inequalities are necessary and sufficient. We further prove that any integer $$d>0$$ is a saturation factor for $$A^{(1)}_1$$ and 4 is a saturation factor for $$A^{(2)}_2$$ .

In 1964, Golod and Shafarevich found that, provided that the number of relations of each degree satisfy some bounds, there exist infinitely dimensional algebras satisfying the relations. These algebras are called Golod-Shafarevich algebras. This paper provides bounds for the growth function on images of Golod-Shafarevich algebras based upon the number of defining relations. This extends results from [32], [33]. Lower bounds of growth for constructed algebras are also obtained, permitting the construction of algebras with various growth functions of various entropies. In particular, the paper answers a question by Drensky [7] by constructing algebras with subexponential growth satisfying given relations, under mild assumption on the number of generating relations of each degree. Examples of nil algebras with neither polynomial nor exponential growth over uncountable fields are also constructed, answering a question by Zelmanov [40]. Recently, several open questions concerning the commutativity of algebras satisfying a prescribed number of defining relations have arisen from the study of noncommutative singularities. In an earlier paper Buczolich, Elekes and the author introduced a new concept of dimension for metric spaces, the so called topological Hausdorff dimension. They proved that it is precisely the right notion to describe the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets of the generic real-valued continuous function (in the sense of Baire category) defined on a compact metric space \(K\). The goal of this paper is to determine the Hausdorff dimension of the fibers of the generic continuous function from \(K\) to \(\mathbb {R}^n\). In order to do so, we define the \(n\)th inductive topological Hausdorff dimension, \(\dim _{t^nH} K\). Let \(\dim _H K,\,\dim _t K\) and \(C_n(K)\) denote the Hausdorff and topological dimension of \(K\) and the Banach space of the continuous functions from \(K\) to \(\mathbb {R}^n\). We show that \(\sup _{y\in \mathbb {R}^n} \dim _{H}f^{-1}(y) = \dim _{t^nH} K -n\) for the generic \(f \in C_n(K)\), provided that \(\dim _t K\ge n\), otherwise every fiber is finite. In order to prove the above theorem we give some equivalent definitions for the inductive topological Hausdorff dimensions, which can be interesting in their own right. Here we use techniques coming from the theory of topological dimension. We show that the supremum is actually attained on the left hand side of the above equation. We characterize those compact metric spaces \(K\) for which \(\dim _{H} f^{-1}(y)=\dim _{t^nH}K-n\) for the generic \(f\in C_n(K)\) and the generic \(y\in f(K)\). We also generalize a result of Kirchheim by showing that if \(K\) is self-similar and \(\dim _t K\ge n\) then \(\dim _{H} f^{-1}(y)=\dim _{t^nH}K-n\) for the generic \(f\in C_n(K)\) for every \(y\in {{\mathrm{int}}}f(K)\).

In this paper we prove that in a Quasi-Dawson’s Chess (a restricted version of Dawson’s Chess) playing on a 3 × d board, the first player is loser if and only if d (mod)5 = 1 or d (mod)5 = 2. Furthermore, we have designed two algorithms that are responsible for storing the results of Quasi-Dawson’s Chess games having less than d + 1 files and finding the strategy that leads to win, if there is a possibility of winning (by a wining position, we mean one from which one can win with best play). Moreover we show that the total complexity of our algorithms is O(d 2). Finally we have implemented our algorithm in C++ which admits the main results of the paper even for large values of d.

In our original paper [4], Theorem 2.1 of [2], that we quoted, was not properly proved. This was done by Lee-Louboutin [3]. The gap doesn’t affect the final result of the paper.

Using the duality theory of sequence spaces, we study in this paper λ-compact operators defined on Banach spaces, corresponding to a sequence space λ. We show that these operators form a quasi-normed operator ideal under suitable restrictions on λ. We also study the relationships of these operators with λ-summing, λ-nuclear and quasi-λ-nuclear operators. The results of this paper generalize the earlier results proved by Sinha and Karn; and also Delgado, Pineiro and Serrano.

Let $$\mathbf{G}$$ be a connected split reductive group over a $$p$$ -adic field. In the first part of the paper we prove, under certain assumptions on $$\mathbf{G}$$ and the prime $$p$$ , a localization theorem of Beilinson–Bernstein type for admissible locally analytic representations of principal congruence subgroups in the rational points of $$\mathbf{G}$$ . In doing so we take up and extend some recent methods and results of Ardakov–Wadsley on completed universal enveloping algebras (Ardakov and Wadsley, Ann. Math., 2013) to a locally analytic setting. As an application we prove, in the second part of the paper, a locally analytic version of Smith’s theorem on the canonical dimension.

In this paper we consider stochastic integration with respect to cylindrical Brownian motion in infinite-dimensional spaces. We study weak characterizations of stochastic integrability and present a natural continuation of results of van Neerven, Weis and the second named author. The limitation of weak characterizations will be demonstrated with a nontrivial counterexample. The second subject treated in the paper addresses representation theory for random variables in terms of stochastic integrals. In particular, we provide an infinite-dimensional version of Dudley’s representation theorem for random variables and an extension of Doob’s representation for martingales.

A cutting-plane procedure for integer programming (IP) problems usually involves invoking a black-box procedure (such as the Gomory–Chvatal procedure) to compute a cutting-plane. In this paper, we describe an alternative paradigm of using the same cutting-plane black-box. This involves two steps. In the first step, we design an inequality $$cx \le d$$ where $$c$$ and $$d$$ are integral, independent of the cutting-plane black-box. In the second step, we verify that the designed inequality is a valid inequality by verifying that the set $$P \cap \{x\in \mathbb R ^n \mid cx \ge d + 1\} \cap \mathbb Z ^n$$ is empty using cutting-planes from the black-box. Here $$P$$ is the feasible region of the linear-programming relaxation of the IP. We refer to the closure of all cutting-planes that can be verified to be valid using a specific cutting-plane black-box as the verification closure of the considered cutting-plane black-box. This paper undertakes a systematic study of properties of verification closures of various cutting-plane black-box procedures.

After the solution of Cousin II problem by Oka III in 1939, he thought an extra-zero problem in 1945 (his posthumous paper) asking if it is possible to solve an arbitrarily given Cousin II problem adding some extra-zeros whose support is disjoint from the given one. By the secondly named author, some special case was affirmatively confirmed in dimension two and a counter-example in dimension three or more was given. The purpose of the present paper is to give a complete solution of this problem with examples and some new questions.
