The study focuses on assessing the proficiency levels of higher education students, specifically the physics achievement test (PHY 101) at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). This test, like others, evaluates various aspects of knowledge and skills simultaneously. However, relying on traditional models for such tests can result in inaccurate interpretations of students' abilities. The research highlights the importance of exploring the multidimensional nature of the PHY 101 test to improve its accuracy in measuring student proficiency and enhance education and assessment quality at NOUN. Using an ex-post facto research design, the study analyzed 978 responses from NOUN's Directorate of Examination and Assessment. Through confirmatory and exploratory DETECT techniques, the study found strong evidence supporting the test's multidimensionality. Three distinct dimensions emerged: cognitive processing, reading ability, and problem-solving skills. A parsimonious multidimensional three-parameter logistic model was used to calibrate the test items, providing valuable insights into item difficulty, discrimination, and resistance to chance influences. While the study primarily focuses on the psychometric aspects of the PHY 101 test, it is important to consider its broader impact on the educational community. The research contributes to educational assessment by emphasizing the significance of recognizing and addressing the multidimensional nature of higher education tests. This approach can result in more accurate assessments of students' abilities, ultimately improving education quality and fairness. In 2019, members of the Executive Committee of the International Association for Statistical Computing (IASC) were contacted by members of the IASC from Africa asking whether it would be feasible to establish a new regional IASC section in Africa. The establishment of a new regional section requires several steps that are outlined in the IASC Statutes at https://iasc-isi.org/statutes/. The approval likely depends on whether the proposed new regional section has the potential to conduct typical section activities, such as organizing regional conferences, workshops, and short courses. To establish whether it is feasible to add a regional section in Africa, the IASC must know whether there is currently enough high-level activity within African countries with respect to computational statistics. To answer this question, we looked at author affiliations of articles published in the Springer journal Computational Statistics (COST) and the Elsevier journal Computational Statistics & Data Analysis (CSDA) from 2015 to 2020 and used these data as a proxy to compare author productivity for authors with an affiliation in Africa in 2019 and 2020, compared to authors with an affiliation in Latin America in 2015 and 2016. This article looks at quantitative results to the questions above, provides insight on how students from Utah State University’s STAT 5080/6080 “Data Technologies” course from the Fall 2019 semester used web scraping techniques in a homework assignment to gather author affiliations from COST and CSDA to answer these questions, and includes the evaluation of student feedback obtained after the end of the course. Open Source Software (OSS) is one of the most trusted technologies for implementing industry 4.0 solutions. The study aims to assist a community of OSS developers in quantifying the product's reliability. This research proposes reliability growth models for OSS by incorporating dynamicity in the debugging process. For this, stochastic differential equation-based analytical models are developed to represent the instantaneous rate of error generation. The fault introduction rate is modeled using exponential and Erlang distribution functions. The empirical applications of the proposed methodology are verified using the real-life failure data of the Open Source Software projects, GNU Network Object Model Environment, and Eclipse. A soft computing technique, Genetic Algorithm, is applied to estimate model parameters. Cross-validation is also performed to examine the forecasting efficacy of the model. The predictive power of the developed models is compared with various benchmark studies. The data analysis is conducted using the R statistical computing software. The results demonstrate the proposed models' efficacy in parameter estimation and predictive performance. In addition, the optimal release time policy based on the proposed mathematical models is presented by formulating the optimization model that intends to minimize the total cost of software development under reliability constraints. The numerical illustration and sensitivity analysis exhibit the proposed problem's practical significance. Summary: We propose a client server architecture for statistical computing. The main feature of our approach is the possibility to connect various client programs via a TCP/IP connection to a powerful statistical engine. This offers the opportunity to include the statistical engine into a number of software packages and to empower the user of these packages to access a modern statistical programming environment. It also allows for the development of specialized client programs for particular tasks. TCP/IP permits a client/server connection with the client and server running on different hosts (remote host) as well as running both applications on the same computer (local host). To have a large flexibility we suggest adding a middleware program managing the communication between Server and Client. This avoids the need to implement TCP/IP communication methods on the server side. Background: High-dose-rate brachytherapy (HDR-BT) plays an important role in the treatment of locally recurrent prostate cancer after definitive treatment. The objective of this study is to summarize the efficacy and toxicity of HDR-BT in these patients. Methods: We performed a systematic review of PubMed and EMBASE from inception to July 2023. The primary endpoint was relapse-free survival (RFS) in different subgroups, and the secondary endpoint was gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) toxicity. A semi-automated tool (WebPlotDigitizer) and a new Shiny application combined with R software (R: a language and environment for statistical computing. R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria; https://www.R-project.org/) helped to reconstruct survival curves. Results: Twenty-six studies met the inclusion criteria for quantitative analysis, including 1447 patients. A total of 761 patients from 13 studies were included in survival reconstruction, and the median RFS time was 61.2 months (57.6–72.0 months). The estimated 2‑, 3‑, and 5‑year rates were 75.9% (95% confidence interval [CI] 72.8 ~ 79.2%), 66.7% (95% CI 63.0 ~ 70.5%), and 52.3% (95% CI 47.5 ~ 57.4%), respectively. Whole-gland irradiation with multiple fractions (≥ 2 F) resulted in better RFS compared with focal gland irradiation with fewer fractions (1 F mostly; hazard ratio [HR]: 0.60, 95% CI 0.47–0.77, p < 0.0001). According to the different median time from primary treatment to salvage therapy (TRS) and median age at recurrence, short median TRS (56–67.2 months vs. 70–120 months; HR 0.52, 95% CI 0.68–0.40; p < 0.0001) and younger median age (60–70 years vs. 71–75 years; HR 0.58, 95% CI 0.46–0.74; p < 0.0001) were positive factors for RFS. The cumulative incidences estimated for grade ≥ 3 acute and late GU toxicities were 1% (95% CI 0 ~ 1%) and 5% (95% CI 4 ~ 7%), respectively. Three patients (3/992) experienced grade ≥ 3 late GI toxicity, and no cases of grade ≥ 3 acute GI toxicity were reported. Conclusion: HDR-BT has a high safety profile and good RFS benefit for salvage treatment of radiorecurrent prostate cancer. In terms of RFS, whole-gland irradiation with multiple fractions seems to be better than focal gland irradiation with fewer fractions, while short TRS and younger age are good prognostic factors. In view of the low level of evidence in the included studies and the large heterogeneity of each study, these conclusions still need to be confirmed by randomized controlled trials. Architectures are described which allow a Java-based front-end to run R code on a server. The front-end described here is a Java application called JavaStat (). JavaStat is a highly-interactive program for data analysis and dynamic visualization with data management capabilities. The objective is to bring the high-level functions of R to JavaStat, without excessive duplicative development work. Results returned from R are wrapped and then displayed using linked, dynamic plots in JavaStat. The principal idea is to use Remote Method Invocation to communicate with a Java server program (JRIServer), which in turn communicates with R using Java/R Interface (JRI). Two versions have been implemented. The first (basic) architecture maintains a connection between the client and server in order to return the results from R. This is suitable for small to moderate data sets in which relatively simple models are run. The second (enhanced) architecture queues the requests and uses polling to fetch the results. It is suitable for large data sets and complex models, e.g., those encountered in genomic studies. JavaStat supports the basic architecture out of the box, but a user account is required to enable the enhanced architectures. Background: Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy is commonly used intravitreally for diabetic proliferative retinopathy, but when used systemically for treating cancers, an excess of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events has been noted. The latter is of concern for people with diabetes, who are at higher risk of CVD. This study aims to explore the relationship between incident CVD and intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy in patients with diabetes, compared to other therapies, using a large real-world global federated dataset. Methods: Data were analysed using TriNetX, a global electronic medical real-world ecosystem. The study included adults with diabetes and excluded those with a history of CVD prior to the time window of data extraction. Patients were categorised into two cohorts: anti-VEGF therapy or control cohort (laser or steroid therapies). The cohorts were 1:1 propensity score-matched for age, sex, ethnicity, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, HbA1c, and cardiovascular medications. Outcomes analysed at 1, 6 and 12 months were: (1) mortality; (2) acute myocardial infarction (MI); (3) cerebral infarction; and (4) heart failure. Relative risk analyses were performed using the built-in R statistical computing platform on TriNetX. Results: In patients with diabetes (n = 2205; mean age 58.8 ± 15.8, Std diff 0.05; 56% male), anti-VEGF therapy was associated with a numerical but non-statistically significant increased CVD risk over 1, 6, and 12 months: Mortality over 1 month (RR 1; 95% CI 0.42, 2.40), 6 months (RR 1.46; 95% CI 0.72, 2.95) and 12 months (RR 1.41; 95% CI 0.88, 2.27). There was no excess of acute MI over 1 (RR n/a: not applicable; 0/0: 0 events in the anti-VEGF group/0 events in the control group), 6 and 12 months (RR n/a; 0/10 events); cerebral infarction over 1, 6 months (RR n/a; 0/0 events), and 12 months (RR n/a; 0/10); and heart failure over 1 month (RR n/a; 0/0 events), 6 months (RR 1; 95% CI 0.42, 2.40) and 12 months (RR 1; 95% CI 0.42, 2.34). Conclusions: There was no statistically significant risk of cardiovascular-related events in the short or medium term in patients with diabetes who received intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy, despite a small increase in the number of CVD events. Conversational agents (CAs) have come a long way from their first appearance in the 1960s to today's generative models. Continuous technological advancements such as statistical computing and large language models allow for an increasingly natural and effortless interaction, as well as domain-agnostic deployment opportunities. Ultimately, this evolution begs multiple questions: How have technical capabilities developed? How is the nature of work changed through humans' interaction with conversational agents? How has research framed dominant perceptions and depictions of such agents? And what is the path forward? To address these questions, we conducted a bibliometric study including over 5000 research articles on CAs. Based on a systematic analysis of keywords, topics, and author networks, we derive "five waves of CA research" that describe the past, present, and potential future of research on CAs. Our results highlight fundamental technical evolutions and theoretical paradigms in CA research. Therefore, we discuss the moderating role of big technologies, and novel technological advancements like OpenAI GPT or BLOOM NLU that mark the next frontier of CA research. XploRe (XploRe Systems, 1992) is a 'computing environment for eXploratory Regression and data analysis' more and more used in the statistical community. It is not only a highly specialized up-to-date statistics and graphics system for density and regression smoothing but also a statistical programming environment. Two versions of XploRe, 2.0 and 3.0, addressing different user groups, are available. XploRe 2.0 is menu operated, hence easier in use for exploratory data analysis. Special consideration is given to XploRe 3.0, characterized by a command-line interpreter and a macro language, called the XploRe Language. After a general description of the statistical and graphical operations as well as technical features, the extensibility of XploRe 3.0 is considered. Differences between the versions 3.0 and 2.0 are described briefly. XploRe 3.0 is compared to S-Plus 2.0, the only other matrix-oriented system for density and regression smoothing with extensibility and availability under DOS. This work discusses and demonstrates the novel use of multivariate analysis and data dimensionality reduction techniques to handle the variety and complexity of data generated in efficacy trials for the development of a prototype vaccine to protect sheep against the Teladorsagia circumcincta nematode. A curated collection of data dimension reduction and visualisation techniques, in conjunction with sensible statistical modelling and testing which explicitly model key features of the data, offers a synthetic view of the relationships between the multiple biological parameters measured. New biological insight is gained into the patterns and associations involving antigen-specific antibody levels, antibody avidity and parasitological parameters of efficacy that is not achievable by standard statistical practice in the field. This approach can therefore be used to guide vaccine refinement and simplification through identifying the most immunologically relevant antigens, and it can be analogously implemented for similar studies in other areas. Background: Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients represent challenging spinal surgery candidates due to associated frailty and deformity. This study consolidates the literature concerning spinal surgery outcomes in PD versus non-PD patients, to evaluate if PD predisposes patients to worse post-operative outcomes, so that treatment protocols can be optimised. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted of PubMed/Medline, Embase, and Google Scholar databases per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies of interest included comparative (PD versus non-PD) cohorts undergoing spinal instrumented fusions. Post-operative clinical outcomes were collated and compared for significance between cohorts. Further analysis was made on outcomes based on the different surgical procedures performed (Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF), Thoracolumbar or Lumbar fusions, Thoracolumbar or Lumbar fusions without Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression fracture (OVCF) patients). All statistical analysis was performed using The R Project for Statistical Computing (version 4.1.2), with a p-value of < 0.05 deemed statistically significant. Results: In total, 2,323,650 patients were included across 16 studies. Of those, 2,308,949 (99.37%) were patients without PD (non-PD), while 14,701 (0.63%) patients had PD at time of surgery. The collective mean age was 68.23 years (PD: 70.14 years vs non-PD: 64.86 years). Comparatively, there were 844,641 males (PD: 4,574; non-PD: 840,067) and 959,908 females (PD: 3,213; non-PD: 956,695). Overall, there were more post-operative complications in the PD cohort. Specifically, PD patients experienced significantly more surgical site infections (p = 0.01), increased rates of revision surgeries (p = 0.04) and increased venous thromboembolic events (p = 0.02) versus the non-PD cohort. In thoracolumbar/lumbar spinal fusions without OVCF patients, the PD cohort had increased rates of revision surgeries (p < 0.01) in comparison to the non-PD cohort. However, when including OVCF patients in thoracolumbar/lumbar spinal fusions, the PD cohort had significantly higher amounts of postoperative complications (p = 0.01), pneumonia (p = 0.02), and revision surgeries (p < 0.01) when compared to the non-PD cohort. Conclusion: Although more robust prospective studies are needed, the results of this study highlight the need for advanced wound care management in the postoperative period, both in-hospital and in the community, in addition to comprehensive multidisciplinary care from allied health professionals, with potential for the use of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols in PD patients undergoing spinal instrumented fusions. Introduction: There is uncertainty regarding the method of mesh fixation and peritoneal closure during transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) repair for inguinal hernias, with no definitive guidelines to guide surgeon choice. Methods: MEDLINE, Cochrane, Central Register of Clinical Trials, and Web of Science were searched for RCTs published until November 2023. Risk ratios (RRs) and mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled with a random-effects model. Statistical significance was defined as p < 0.05. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochran Q test and I2 statistics, with p values inferior to 0.10 and I2 > 25% considered significant. Statistical analyses were conducted using Review Manager version 5.4 and RStudio version 4.1.2 (R Foundation for Statistical Computing). Results: Eight randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included, comprising 624 patients, of whom 309 (49.5%) patients were submitted to TAPP with the use of tacks, and 315 (50.5%) received suture fixation. The use of tacker fixation was associated with a significant increase in postoperative pain at 24 h (MD 0.79 [VAS score]; 95% CI 0.38 to 1.19; p < 0.0002; I2 = 87%) and one week (MD 0.42 [VAS score]; 95% CI 0.05 to 0.79; p < 0.03, I2 = 84%). The use of tacks was associated with shorter operative time (MD—25.80 [min]; 95% − 34.31– − 17.28; P < 0.00001; I2 = 94%). No significant differences were found in overall complications, chronic pain, seromas, hematomas, and urinary retention rates. The detection of differential item functioning (DIF) is a central topic in psychometrics and educational measurement. In the past few years, a new family of score-based tests of measurement invariance has been proposed, which allows the detection of DIF along arbitrary person covariates in a variety of item response theory (IRT) models. This paper illustrates the application of these tests within the R system for statistical computing, making them accessible to a broad range of users. This presentation also includes IRT models for which these tests have not previously been investigated, such as the generalized partial credit model. The paper has three goals: First, we review the ideas behind score-based tests of measurement invariance. Second, we describe the implementation of these tests within the R system for statistical computing, which is based on the interaction of the R packages mirt, psychotools and strucchange. Third, we illustrate the application of this software and the interpretation of its output in two empirical datasets. The complete R code for reproducing our results is reported in the paper. Background: Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is a global health problem affecting millions of women worldwide. Vaginal childbirth has been reported to be the most important factor in the etiology of PFD though a prior study also reported a high prevalence of PFD in nulliparous women. Some previous studies had suggested Urinary incontinence before pregnancy as a major risk factor for incontinence later in life, thus prevention of PFD has become a major priority in women's health, and identification of women at risk is a key element in current prevention strategies It is therefore necessary to investigate the prevalence and risk factors for PFD in Nulligravida women who have never been pregnant to enable preventative measures especially as it regards lifestyle modification. Methods: Participants were 160 Nulligravida students aged between 17 and 26 years. They were screened for pelvic floor dysfunction using an Australian pelvic floor questionnaire which assessed their bladder function, bowel function, pelvic organ prolapse, and sexual function. Descriptive statistics of frequency and percentage were used to summarize categorical variables. Univariate analysis of Fisher's exact test and Wilcoxon rank-sum test were conducted to show the association of categorical and continuous variables with pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) respectively. The risk factors of PFD with p values < 0.05 were considered significant. All analyses were performed using R Statistical Computing Programming version 4.2.2. Results: The prevalence of having at least one of any of the PFD was 73.1% while the prevalence of bladder, bowel, prolapse, and sex dysfunction were 25.63% (41/160), 53.75% (86/160), 1.88% (3/160), and 23.13% (37/160) respectively. BMI was not a significant risk factor for any type of PFD while multi-variable logistic regression identified the level of study, height, history of UTI, and non-sport participation as significant (p < 0.05) risk factors for at least one type of PFD with Odd ratio of 4.91, > 100, 8.47, and 2.86 respectively. Conclusion: There is high prevalence of PFD among Nulligravida students, with non-participation in sports and history of urinary tract infections being the main significant risk factors. In many biomechanical analyses, the forces acting on a body during dynamic and static activities are often simplified as point loads. However, it is usually more accurate to characterize these forces as distributed loads, varying in magnitude and direction, over a given contact area. Evaluating these pressure distributions while they are applied to different parts of the body can provide effective insights for clinicians and researchers when studying health and disease conditions, for example when investigating the biomechanical factors that may lead to plantar ulceration in diabetic foot disease. At present, most processing and analysis for pressure data is performed using proprietary software, limiting reproducibility, transparency, and consistency across different studies. This paper describes an open-source software package, 'pressuRe', which is built in the freely available R statistical computing environment and is designed to process, analyze, and visualize pressure data collected on a range of different hardware systems in a standardized manner. We demonstrate the use of the package on pressure dataset from patients with diabetic foot disease, comparing pressure variables between those with longer and shorter durations of the disease. The results matched closely with those from commercially available software, and individuals with longer duration of diabetes were found to have higher forefoot pressures than those with shorter duration. By utilizing R's powerful and openly available tools for statistical analysis and user customization, this package may be a useful tool for researchers and clinicians studying plantar pressures and other pressure sensor array based biomechanical measurements. With regular updates intended, this package allows for continued improvement and we welcome feedback and future contributions to extend its scope. Integration of different kinds of data is an important issue in archaeological prospection. However, the current methodological approaches are underdeveloped and rarely use the data to their maximum potential. Common approaches to integration in the geophysical sciences are mostly just various forms of comparison. We argue that true integration should involve the mathematical manipulation of input data such that the original values of the input data are changed, or that new variables are produced. To address this important research gap, we present an innovative approach to the analysis of geochemical and geophysical datasets in prospection-focused disciplines. Our approach, which we refer to as "multiscalar integration" to differentiate it from simpler methods, involves the application of mathematical methods and tools to process the data in a unified way. To demonstrate our approach, we focus on integrating geophysical data (magnetometry) with geochemical data (elemental content). Our approach comprises three main stages: Quantification of the data deviation from random distributions, linear modelling of geophysical and geochemical data and integration based on weighting of the different elements derived in previous steps. All the steps of the workflow can be also applied separately and independently as needed or preferred. Our approach is implemented in the R environment for statistical computing. All data, functions and scripts used in the work are available from open access repositories (Zenodo.org and Github.com) so that others can test, modify and apply our proposed methods to new cases and problems. Our approach has the following advantages: (1) It allows the rapid exploration of multiple data sources in an unified way; (2) it can increase the utility of geochemical data across diverse prospection disciplines; (3) it facilitates the identification of links between geochemical and geophysical data (or generally, between point-based and raster data); (4) it innovatively integrates various datasets by weighting the information provided by each; (5) it is simple to apply following a step-by-step framework; (6) the code and workflow is fully open to allow for customization, improvements and additions. Purpose: Coloanal anastomosis with loop diverting ileostomy (CAA) is an option for low anterior resection of the rectum, and Turnbull-Cutait coloanal anastomosis (TCA) regained popularity in the effort to offer patients a reconstructive option. In this context, we aimed to compare both techniques. Methods: PubMed, Cochrane, and Scopus were searched for studies published until January 2024. Odds ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled with a random-effects model. Statistical significance was defined as p < 0.05. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochran Q test and I2 statistics, with p-values inferior to 0.10 and I2 >25% considered significant. Statistical analysis was conducted in RStudio version 4.1.2 (R Foundation for Statistical Computing). Registered number CRD42024509963. Results: One randomized controlled trial and nine observational studies were included, comprising 1,743 patients, of whom 899 (51.5%) were submitted to TCA and 844 (48.5%) to CAA. Most patients had rectal cancer (52.2%), followed by megacolon secondary to Chagas disease (32.5%). TCA was associated with increased colon ischemia (OR 3.54; 95% CI 1.13 to 11.14; p < 0.031; I2 = 0%). There were no differences in postoperative complications classified as Clavien-Dindo ≥ IIIb, anastomotic leak, pelvic abscess, intestinal obstruction, bleeding, permanent stoma, or anastomotic stricture. In subgroup analysis of patients with cancer, TCA was associated with a reduction in anastomotic leak (OR 0.55; 95% CI 0.31 to 0.97 p = 0.04; I2 = 34%). Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection is highly heterogeneous, ranging from asymptomatic to severe and fatal cases. COVID-19 has been characterized by an increase of serum pro-inflammatory cytokine levels which seems to be associated with fatal cases. By contrast, the role of pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs), involved in the attenuation of inflammatory responses, has been scarcely investigated, so further studies are needed to understand SPMs metabolism in COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Our aim was to analyse the lipid mediator metabolome, quantifying pro- and anti-inflammatory serum bioactive lipids by LC–MS/MS in 7 non-infected subjects and 24 COVID-19 patients divided into mild, moderate, and severe groups according to the pulmonary involvement, to better understand the disease outcome and the severity of the pulmonary manifestations. Statistical analysis was performed with the R programming language (R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria). All COVID-19 patients had increased levels of Prostaglandin E2. Severe patients showed a significant increase versus controls, mild- and moderate-affected patients, expressed as median (interquartile range), in resolvin E1 [112.6 (502.7) vs 0.0 (0.0) pg/ml in the other groups], as well as in maresin 2 [14.5 (7.0) vs 8.1 (4.2), 5.5 (4.3), and 3.0 (4.0) pg/ml, respectively]. Moreover, 14-hydroxy docosahexaenoic acid (14-HDHA) levels were also increased in severe vs control and mild-affected patients [24.7 (38.2) vs 2.4 (2.2) and 3.7 (6.4) ng/mL, respectively]. Resolvin D5 was also significantly elevated in both moderate [15.0 (22.4) pg/ml] and severe patients [24.0 (24.1) pg/ml] versus controls [0.0 (0.0) pg/ml]. These results were confirmed by sparse partial least squares discriminant analysis which highlighted the contribution of these mediators to the separation between each of the groups. In conclusion, the potent inflammatory response to SARS-CoV-2 infection involves not only pro- but also anti-inflammatory lipid mediators that can be quantified in easily accessible serum samples, suggesting the need to perform future research on their generation pathways that will help us to discover new therapeutic targets. Aim: Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many support programs for tuberculosis (TB) patients have been discontinued and TB mass screening activities decreased worldwide, resulting in a decrease in new case detection and an increase in TB deaths (WHO, WHO global lists of high burden countries for TB, multidrug/rifampicin-resistant TB (MDR/RR-TB) and TB/HIV, 2021–2025, 2021). The study aimed to assess changes in epidemiological indicators of tuberculosis in the Russian Federation and to simulate these indicators in the post-COVID-19 period. Materials and Methods: The main epidemiological indicators of tuberculosis were analyzed with the use of government statistical data for the period from 2009 to 2021. Further mathematical modeling of epidemiological indicators for the coming years was carried out, taking into account the TB screening by chest X-ray. Statistical analysis was carried out using the software environment R (v.3.5.1) for statistical computing and the commercial software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS Statistics for Windows, version 24.0, IBM Corp., 2016). Time series forecasting was performed using the programming language for statistical calculations R, version 4.1.2 and the bsts package, version 0.9.8. Study Results: The study has found that the mean regression coefficient of a single predictor differs in the model for TB incidence and mortality (0.0098 and 0.0002, respectively). Forecast of overall incidence, the incidence of children and the forecast for mortality using the basic scenario (screening 75–78%) for the period from 2022 to 2026 was characterized by a mean decrease rate of 23.1%, 15.6% and 6.0% per year, respectively. A conservative scenario (screening 47–63%) of overall incidence indicates that the incidence of children and the forecast for mortality will continue to decrease with a mean decrease rate of 23.2%, 15.6% and 6.0% per year, respectively. Comparable data were obtained from the forecast of overall incidence, the incidence of children and the forecast for mortality using the optimistic scenario (screening 82–89%) with a mean decrease rate of 22.9%, 15.4% and 6.0% per year, respectively. Conclusions: It has been proven that the significance of screening with chest X-ray as a predictor of mortality is minimal. However, TB screening at least 60% of the population (chest X-ray in adults and immunological tests in children) have provided relationship between the TB screening rate and TB mortality rate (TB mortality rate increases with an increase in the population coverage and, conversely, decreases with a decrease in the population coverage). Venoms are biochemical arsenals that have emerged in numerous animal lineages, where they have co-evolved with morphological and behavioural traits for venom production and delivery. In centipedes, venom evolution is thought to be constrained by the morphological complexity of their venom glands due to physiological limitations on the number of toxins produced by their secretory cells. Here we show that the uneven toxin expression that results from these limitations have enabled Scolopendra morsitans to regulate the composition of their secreted venom despite the lack of gross morphologically complex venom glands. We show that this control is probably achieved by a combination of this heterogenous toxin distribution with a dual mechanism of venom secretion that involves neuromuscular innervation as well as stimulation via neurotransmitters. Our results suggest that behavioural control over venom composition may be an overlooked aspect of venom biology and provide an example of how exaptation can facilitate evolutionary innovation and novelty., (© 2024. Bats and birds are defined by their convergent evolution of flight, hypothesized to require the modular decoupling of wing and leg evolution. Although a wealth of evidence supports this interpretation in birds, there has been no systematic attempt to identify modular organization in the bat limb skeleton. Here we present a phylogenetically representative and ecologically diverse collection of limb skeletal measurements from 111 extant bat species. We compare this dataset with a compendium of 149 bird species, known to exhibit modular evolution and anatomically regionalized skeletal adaptation. We demonstrate that, in contrast to birds, morphological diversification across crown bats is associated with strong trait integration both within and between the forelimb and hindlimb. Different regions of the bat limb skeleton adapt to accommodate variation in distinct ecological activities, with flight-style variety accommodated by adaptation of the distal wing, while the thumb and hindlimb play an important role facilitating adaptive responses to variation in roosting habits. We suggest that the wing membrane enforces evolutionary integration across the bat skeleton, highlighting that the evolution of the bat thumb is less correlated with the evolution of other limb bone proportions. We propose that strong limb integration inhibits bat adaptive responses, explaining their lower rates of phenotypic evolution and relatively homogeneous evolutionary dynamics in contrast to birds. Collective behaviour, social interactions and leadership in animal groups are often driven by individual differences. However, most studies focus on same-species groups, in which individual variation is relatively low. Multispecies groups, however, entail interactions among highly divergent phenotypes, ranging from simple exploitative actions to complex coordinated networks. Here we studied hunting groups of otherwise-solitary Octopus cyanea and multiple fish species, to unravel hidden mechanisms of leadership and associated dynamics in functional nature and complexity, when divergence is maximized. Using three-dimensional field-based tracking and field experiments, we found that these groups exhibit complex functional dynamics and composition-dependent properties. Social influence is hierarchically distributed over multiscale dimensions representing role specializations: fish (particularly goatfish) drive environmental exploration, deciding where, while the octopus decides if, and when, the group moves. Thus, 'classical leadership' can be insufficient to describe complex heterogeneous systems, in which leadership instead can be driven by both stimulating and inhibiting movement. Furthermore, group composition altered individual investment and collective action, triggering partner control mechanisms (that is, punching) and benefits for the de facto leader, the octopus. This seemingly non-social invertebrate flexibly adapts to heterospecific actions, showing hallmarks of social competence and cognition. Mycorrhizal fungi are essential to the establishment of the vast majority of plant species but are often conceptualized with contradictory roles in plant community assembly. On the one hand, host-specific mycorrhizal fungi may allow a plant to be competitively dominant by enhancing growth. On the other hand, host-specific mycorrhizal fungi with different functional capabilities may increase nutrient niche partitioning, allowing plant species to coexist. Here, to resolve the balance of these two contradictory forces, we used a controlled greenhouse study to manipulate the presence of two main types of mycorrhizal fungus, ectomycorrhizal fungi and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and used a range of conspecific and heterospecific competitor densities to investigate the role of mycorrhizal fungi in plant competition and coexistence. We find that the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi equalizes fitness differences between plants and stabilizes competition to create conditions for host species coexistence. Our results show how below-ground mutualisms can shift outcomes of plant competition and that a holistic view of plant communities that incorporates their mycorrhizal partners is important in predicting plant community dynamics., (© 2024. The eastern branch of the Eastern African Rift System (EARS) is the source of a large proportion of the early hominin fossil record, but it covers a tiny fraction (ca. 1%) of the continent. Here we investigate how this mismatch between where fossils are preserved and where hominins probably lived may influence our ability to understand early hominin evolution, using extant mammals as analogues. We show that the eastern branch of the EARS is not an environmentally representative sample of the full species range for nearly all extant rift-dwelling mammals. Likewise, when we investigate published morphometric datasets for extant cercopithecine primates, evidence from the eastern branch alone fails to capture major portions of continental-scale cercopithecine cranial morphospace. We suggest that extant rift-dwelling species should be used as analogues to place confidence intervals on hominin habitat reconstructions. Furthermore, given the north-south orientation of the eastern branch of the EARS, morphoclines that are not aligned along this major north-south axis are likely to be poorly sampled by sites in the eastern branch. Objectives: Our Health Counts (OHC) methods are designed to address gaps in urban-based Indigenous health information. In partnership with local Indigenous health service providers, we have successfully implemented OHC in six Ontario cities. The aim of this study is to summarize findings regarding Indigenous population undercount, health inequities, and health service access barriers across study sites., Methods: We estimated Indigenous population size using OHC census participation survey responses and a multiplier approach. Health inequities between Indigenous populations and overall populations in each city were examined using respondent-driven sampling (RDS), adjusted OHC survey results, and existing public data. Measures included health status outcomes; determinants of health; barriers to health service access, including discrimination by health service providers; and unmet health needs., Results: Indigenous social networks were strong and extensive, and the urban populations demonstrate resilience and cultural continuity across multiple measures. Self-reported rates of census participation for Indigenous populations were markedly lower than those for the general population in each city, and OHC Indigenous population size estimates were consistently 2‒4 times higher than reported in the census. Indigenous to general population health inequities cut across measures of chronic disease, determinants of health, and unmet health needs. Indigenous populations experienced multiple barriers to health services access, including racial discrimination by health service providers., Conclusion: The Canadian census appears to markedly underestimate Indigenous population size in urban areas. During the sixth millennium BCE, the first farmers of Central Europe rapidly expanded across a varied mosaic of forested environments. Such environments would have offered important sources of mineral-rich animal feed and shelter, prompting the question: to what extent did early farmers exploit forests to raise their herds? Here, to resolve this, we have assembled multi-regional datasets, comprising bulk and compound-specific stable isotope values from zooarchaeological remains and pottery, and conducted cross-correlation analyses within a palaeo-environmental framework. Our findings reveal a diversity of pasturing strategies for cattle employed by early farmers, with a notable emphasis on intensive utilization of forests for grazing and seasonal foddering in some regions. This experimentation with forest-based animal feeds by early farmers would have enhanced animal fertility and milk yields for human consumption, concurrently contributing to the expansion of prehistoric farming settlements and the transformation of forest ecosystems. Purpose: Children undergoing either posterior spinal fusion (PSF) or index insertion of growing rods for neuromuscular or genetic/syndromic scoliosis may require post-operative care on the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Demands on this limited resource result in frequent bed shortage related cancellations. In response, an ad-hoc or 'pop-up' ward-based high-dependency unit (POPUP-HDU) was developed. This converts a ward bed to POP-HDU bed for the required time. This study assesses the safety and efficacy of postoperative management that utilises POPUP-HDU as an alternative to a PICU bed., Methods: Retrospective review of 111 consecutive children undergoing posterior surgery for scoliosis between June 2016 and April 2023. The inclusion criteria included a diagnosis of genetic/syndromic or neuromuscular scoliosis; PSF or primary insertion of distraction-based growth rods and requirement for postoperative care in a PICU. We excluded those children that were mandated to go to PICU post-operatively for any reason by the anaesthetic team., Results: 49 patients (mean age 13.0 years) were managed on PICU, and 62 (mean age 11.4 years) on POPUP-HDU. The groups were matched with respect to body weight, curve magnitude, operative duration, type of fusion procedure performed, the presence of cardiac malformations, the use of home breathing support, the number of operated levels, pelvic instrumentation and intraoperative blood loss. 8 patients in the PICU, and 16 in the POP-HDU groups were readmitted back to PICU following step-down to the hospital ward (p = 0.27). The median PICU length of stay was 1 day in the PICU group and less than a day in POPUP-HDU (for those that needed to be subsequently admitted to PICU). The median total length of hospital stay was 10 days in the PICU group, and 8 days in POPUP-HDU (p < 0.05). 14 patients developed medical complications in the PICU group, compared to 19 in POPUP-HDU. There were no bedshortage cancellations in POPUP-HDU, compared to 23 in PICU., Conclusions: For children with neuromuscular, genetic or syndromic scoliosis undergoing PSF or growth rods that are not deemed suitable for immediate ward-level post-operative care, POPUP-HDU provided a safe alternative to PICU for appropriate patients and was associated with shorter hospital stay and fewer cancellations for lack of PICU beds., Level of Evidence: Therapeutic Level III., (© 2024. Under the obstetrical dilemma hypothesis, sexual dimorphism in pelvic shape is a solution to accommodate high fetopelvic constraints. It is therefore unclear why chimpanzees display a human-like pattern of pelvic sexual dimorphism despite having easier births enabled by small neonates and capacious pelvic canals. Here we reassessed chimpanzee fetopelvic fit using three-dimensional simulations, revealing a similarly constricted midpelvis as in humans, with even narrower outlet dimensions. Geometric morphometric analyses confirm that female chimpanzees have larger pelvic canals than males despite a smaller body size and a morphology that maximizes pelvic dimensions favourable for parturition, particularly in smaller-bodied individuals. Together with evidence for increased neurological immaturity at birth relative to monkeys, our findings imply substantial obstetric constraints in chimpanzees and possibly other apes. We therefore propose that difficult birth did not arise abruptly in Homo with increasing encephalization but evolved gradually through a series of obstetric compromises from an already constricted birth canal shared across anthropoid primates. Specifically, we propose that obstetric selection pressures exacerbated incrementally with the stiffening of the symphysis that accompanied body size increase in hominoids, while subsequent adaptations to bipedalism shortened the ilium. Many terrestrial plant communities, especially forests, have been shown to lag in response to rapid climate change. Grassland communities may respond more quickly to novel climates, as they consist mostly of short-lived species, which are directly exposed to macroclimate change. Here we report the rapid response of grassland communities to climate change in the California Floristic Province. We estimated 349 vascular plant species' climatic niches from 829,337 occurrence records, compiled 15 long-term community composition datasets from 12 observational studies and 3 global change experiments, and analysed community compositional shifts in the climate niche space. We show that communities experienced significant shifts towards species associated with warmer and drier locations at rates of 0.0216 ± 0.00592 °C yr - 1 (mean ± s.e.) and -3.04 ± 0.742 mm yr - 1 , and these changes occurred at a pace similar to that of climate warming and drying. These directional shifts were consistent across observations and experiments. Emerging infectious diseases pose a threat to pollinators. Virus transmission among pollinators via flowers may be reinforced by anthropogenic land-use change and concomitant alteration of plant-pollinator interactions. Here, we examine how species' traits and roles in flower-visitation networks and landscape-scale factors drive key honeybee viruses-black queen cell virus (BQCV) and deformed wing virus-in 19 wild bee and hoverfly species, across 12 landscapes varying in pollinator-friendly (flower-rich) habitat. Viral loads were on average more than ten times higher in managed honeybees than in wild pollinators. Viral loads in wild pollinators were higher when floral resource use overlapped with honeybees, suggesting these as reservoir hosts, and increased with pollinator abundance and viral loads in honeybees. Viral prevalence decreased with the amount of pollinator-friendly habitat in a landscape, which was partly driven by reduced floral resource overlap with honeybees. Black queen cell virus loads decreased with a wild pollinator's centrality in the network and the proportion of visited dish-shaped flowers. Urbanization is creating a new global biome, in which cities and suburbs around the world often resemble each other more than the local natural areas they replaced. But while urbanization can profoundly affect ecology at local scales, we know little about whether it disrupts large-scale ecological patterns. Here we test whether urbanization disrupts a macroecological pattern central to ecological and evolutionary theory: the increase in seed predation intensity from high to low latitudes. Across 14,000 km of latitude spanning the Americas, we compared predation intensity on two species of standardized experimental seeds in urbanized and natural areas. In natural areas, predation on both seed species increased fivefold from high latitudes to the tropics, one of the strongest latitudinal gradients in species interactions documented so far. Surprisingly, latitudinal gradients in predation were equally strong in urbanized areas despite significant habitat modification. Nevertheless, urbanization did affect seed predation. Compared with natural areas, urbanization reduced overall predation and vertebrate predation, did not affect predation by invertebrates in general, and increased predation by ants. Our results show that macroecological patterns in predation intensity can persist in urbanized environments, even as urbanization alters the relative importance of predators and potentially the evolutionary trajectory of urban populations., (© 2024. Shifts in phenology with climate change can lead to asynchrony between interacting species, with cascading impacts on ecosystem services. Previous meta-analyses have produced conflicting results on whether asynchrony has increased in recent decades, but the underlying data have also varied-including in species composition, interaction types and whether studies compared data grouped by trophic level or compared shifts in known interacting species pairs. Here, using updated data from previous studies and a Bayesian phylogenetic model, we found that species have advanced an average of 3.1 days per decade across 1,279 time series across 29 taxonomic classes. We found no evidence that shifts vary by trophic level: shifts were similar when grouped by trophic level, and for species pairs when grouped by their type of interaction-either as paired species known to interact or as randomly paired species. Phenology varied with phylogeny (λ = 0.4), suggesting that uneven sampling of species may affect estimates of phenology and potentially phenological shifts. These results could aid forecasting for well-sampled groups but suggest that climate change has not yet led to widespread increases in phenological asynchrony across interacting species, although substantial biases in current data make forecasting for most groups difficult., (© 2024. The size-complexity hypothesis is a leading explanation for the evolution of complex life on earth. It predicts that in lineages that have undergone a major transition in organismality, larger numbers of lower-level subunits select for increased division of labour. Current data from multicellular organisms and social insects support a positive correlation between the number of cells and number of cell types and between colony size and the number of castes. However, the implication of these results is unclear, because colony size and number of cells are correlated with other variables which may also influence selection for division of labour, and causality could be in either direction. Here, to resolve this problem, we tested multiple causal hypotheses using data from 794 ant species. We found that larger colony sizes favoured the evolution of increased division of labour, resulting in more worker castes and greater variation in worker size. By contrast, our results did not provide consistent support for alternative hypotheses regarding either queen mating frequency or number of queens per colony explaining variation in division of labour. Few described archaeal, and fewer bacterial, lineages thrive under salt-saturating conditions, such as solar saltern crystallizers (salinity above 30% w/v). They accumulate molar K + cytoplasmic concentrations to maintain osmotic balance ('salt-in' strategy) and have proteins adaptively enriched in negatively charged acidic amino acids. Here we analysed metagenomes and metagenome-assembled genomes from geothermally influenced hypersaline ecosystems with increasing chaotropicity in the Danakil Depression. Normalized abundances of universal single-copy genes confirmed that haloarchaea and Nanohaloarchaeota encompass 99% of microbial communities in the near-life-limiting conditions of the Western-Canyon Lakes. Danakil metagenome- and metagenome-assembled-genome-inferred proteomes, compared with those of freshwater, seawater and solar saltern ponds up to saturation (6-14-32% salinity), showed that Western-Canyon Lake archaea encode the most acidic proteomes ever observed (median protein isoelectric points ≤4.4). We identified previously undescribed haloarchaeal families as well as an Aenigmatarchaeota family and a bacterial phylum independently adapted to extreme halophily. Despite phylum-level diversity decreasing with increasing salinity-chaotropicity, and unlike in solar salterns, adapted archaea exceedingly diversified in Danakil ecosystems, challenging the notion of decreasing diversity under extreme conditions. Metabolic flexibility to utilize multiple energy and carbon resources generated by local hydrothermalism along feast-and-famine strategies seemingly shapes microbial diversity in these ecosystems near life limits., (© 2024. Global change is associated with variable shifts in the annual production of aboveground plant biomass, suggesting localized sensitivities with unclear causal origins. Combining remotely sensed normalized difference vegetation index data since the 1980s with contemporary field data from 84 grasslands on 6 continents, we show a widening divergence in site-level biomass ranging from +51% to -34% globally. Biomass generally increased in warmer, wetter and species-rich sites with longer growing seasons and declined in species-poor arid areas. Phenological changes were widespread, revealing substantive transitions in grassland seasonal cycling. Grazing, nitrogen deposition and plant invasion were prevalent in some regions but did not predict overall trends.
