The assessment of children's quality of life presents specific methodological aspects. The objective of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Child Quality of Life Systemic Inventory (CQLSI). It is based on an innovative conceptual and methodological approach to quality of life self-assessment. It is interactive and playful, has a psychometry which operates several scores, and allows the analysis of each domain of life. One hundred twenty Portuguese children, from 8 to 12 years old, participated in the study. Results show that internal consistency of the four scores of the CQLSI (State, Goal, Rank and Gap) is satisfactory and all scores have their own specificity. Findings reveal the feasibility of this self-assessment instrument for children's quality of life, demonstrating psychometric adequacy of the Portuguese version. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the journey that the journal Psychosocial Intervention began in 2011, with the aim of increasing its scientific quality and broadening its reach. Founded in 1992, Psychosocial Intervention began a new phase in 2011, with the advent of a new Editor-in-Chief, editorial team, and editorial policy. At that point, strategic decisions were made in the areas of editorial and review practices, language, and dissemination of the journal, which resulted in a publication of higher quality and broader reach. The description of the journey undertaken by Psychosocial Intervention is presented with the hope that this experience may be useful to scholars, scientific organizations, and institutions in the area of psychology that share similar objectives of upgrading the scientific quality of their publications, and broadening their reach. The provision of workplace-based experiences (internship) is an important component of training programs of students attending vocational education courses. Regarding the impact of such experiences in the vocational development, results of the present research are not conclusive enough. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between work experience quality and students vocational development. Using a longitudinal design, we conducted a study that explores the relationship between the perceived qualities of the training experience and the vocational development of Portuguese high school students (N = 196). The results suggest that the work experience quality is relevant for the vocational development of students, mainly, in what concerns the process of career exploration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this study has been to know if the relationship between stress and elderly quality of life can be moderated by the meaning in life. Two hundred and ten participants with mean age of seventy four years old, most of them female (68.58%) took part in the study. The participants answered the following instruments: Mini Mental State Exam, Stressing Events Inventory, Elderly Quality of Life Questionnaire, Purpose in Life Test (PIL) and demographic questions. Principal component analysis, Pearson correlation coefficients and linear regressions were analyzed. The results obtained indicated that the influence of stress on quality of life is significant for the group with low meaning in life, but it was not the same for the group with high meaning in life. This study aimed to evaluate quality of life (QoL) and psychological vulnerability (anxiety, stress and depression) of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) who would undergo Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT). The sample consisted of 13 patients. The following instruments were used: MOS 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) and Lipp's Stress Symptoms Inventory for Adults (ISSL). Data analysis was performed according to specific recommendations for each instrument. The obtained results showed that the physical and mental damage the illness (and/or transplantation) imposed is significantly related with the emergence of depression, anxiety and stress in participants. This study investigated the sleep quality of women with breast cancer and their relationship with quality of life and depression. Fifty women with breast cancer (clinical group) and a control group of other 50 women without the disease answered a clinical-demographic questionnaire and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The clinical group also completed the Quality of Life Cancer-Survivor and the Brief Zung Self- Rating Depression Scale questionnaires. It was found that women with breast cancer had significantly more complaints of nocturia, heat and nighttime awakenings. The clinical group with poor quality of sleep reported impaired quality of life and more symptoms of depression. The KIDSCREEN is a European cross-cultural and standardized instrument that assesses ten quality of life dimensions in children, adolescents and their parents. This instrument is used to validate evidences to support general inferences on quality-of-life measures obtained by the Portuguese version of KIDSCREEN- 10 for children and adolescents, in the context of a survey research carried on in Portugal. The present study focuses only on the KIDSCREEN children and adolescents' versions. A sample of 8072 Portuguese children and adolescents attending the 5th grade (19.3%), 6th grade (19.2%), 7th grade (20.3%), 8th (21.6%) and 10th grade (19.7%) in Portuguese schools were inquired, with a mean age of 13.2; SD 2.06, randomly distributed regarding gender. The Portuguese version of KIDSCREEN-10 instrument showed a good Internal Consistency of .78. Chosen fit indexes indicate good fit to the data. Specifically in the final solution the RMSEA was lower than .03 and the upper limit of 90% confidence interval was lower than .05, and CFI was higher than .95. Results indicated that the current 10-item structure is invariant across age groups, nationality and socio-economic level. The KIDSCREEN-10 questionnaire is a reliable instrument to estimate the perception of quality of life in children and adolescents. This study aimed to analyze the influence of biodemographic and clinical variables on quality of life of HIV-positive people over 50 years old. For that, 43 HIV-positive people over 50 took part in the study (M=55; DP=4.6), being 63% male. The Scale of Quality of Life in Old Age (WHOQOL-OLD) and a biodemographic questionnaire were used as instruments. It was verified the impact of biodemographic and clinical variables in the following factors: "Autonomy", "Past, Present and Future Activities", "Death and Dying" and "Intimacy". The QL presented itself as a dimension of human life which is inseparable from objective conditions such as work, leisure, and housing, among others. This paper presents results about the development of a new psychological measure for quality assessment in romantic relationships. The Scale for Quality Assessment in Romantic Relationships (Aquarela-R) follows the parameters of a semantic differential (SD) and it is proposed to directly assess five cognitive, affective and behavioral dimensions of romantic relationships: (a) commitment, (b) intimacy, (c) love, (d) sexual relationship, and (e) communication. Two studies comprised the research: the first was a study of the semantics of descriptors, and the second one was about development of the measure. Three hundred eighty eight people participated in this survey, 211 (54.4%) were males and the average age of the participants was 28.2 years old (SD = 9.1 years). Based on studies relating the impact of foster care organizations on the development of institutionalized children and adolescents, the present paper conducted an investigation of the strategies used by professionals in charge of foster care evaluation in Brazil, as well as the quality indicators used for this task. Nine evaluators and five foster care coordinators took part in the study. Data collection involved interviews, questionnaires and document analysis, using a framework from Developmental Psychopathology, specifically in terms of its contribution on risk and protective factors. Evaluators used the institutional visit as a predominant assessment strategy, conducting it in different ways and frequency. The quality indicators found were also varied. In order to learn how to transform a text, it is important to give children prompts at the level of spelling, sentence cohesion and narrative coherence. Explicit feedback related to the problems of the initial version of a narrative is also important. The participants were 30 children from 4th grade divided in Experimental and Control Groups. It was evaluated the effect of a training program in which children revise their own texts with the help of some grids that were used as guidelines to analyze their spelling and also the cohesion and coherence, explicit feedback was also given. Research on mnemonic distortions has increased among researchers worldwide. However, the relation between the mechanisms responsible for memory distortions and individual differences that influence memory performance is still to be investigated. The present study aims to investigate the influence of personality traits in the susceptibility to false memories. Participants were 200 college students from different majors. The Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) Procedure was used to investigate memory performance and the Personality Traits Inventory was used to identify distinct personality traits. In this study, we attempted to map early attachment security to the development of social competence in preschool years. Participants were 48 mother dyads from two different countries (Portugal and the United States of America). Positive and significant correlations were found between the AQS security score and the social competence. The results suggest that the parent-child attachment relationships contribute to children's adaptation in the preschool peer group by promoting positive engagement with peers and by supporting a range of skills that underlie peer acceptance. The present study aimed at assessing the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) submitted to autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). This study is part of a pioneering research protocol which tests the applicability of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as a new therapeutic approach to DM1. The study was conducted on 14 patients admitted to the ward of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit of a university hospital during the period from October 2006 to December 2007. The patients were evaluated at admission and on the occasion of the ambulatory return visit 100 days after transplantation. They answered the SF-36 quality of life questionnaire and the data were analyzed according to literature recommendations. The results showed that 100 days after transplantation the value of the patients' quality of life was higher compared to the pre-HSCT value, with significant differences in the Physical Domains (Role Limitations due to Physical Problems) (p = .009), Vitality (p = .02) and Mental Health (p = .04), demonstrating significant appreciation of those domains after the procedure. The results indicate an improvement in HRQoL after HSCT. The SF-36 proved to be a useful instrument for the assessment of quality of life in patients with DM1 submitted to HSCT. The present study examines the relation between perceptions of quality of life and of family support among elderly people according to their level of social vulnerability and other sociodemographic characteristics. Interviews were conducted with six groups of 25 elderly people (N = 150), one group for each level of vulnerability, in a medium-sized municipality in São Paulo state, Brazil. The instruments used were: the Family Support Perception Inventory, Quality of Life in Alzheimer's disease and the Brazilian Family Economic Classification Checklist. Statistically significant correlations indicate that levels of social vulnerability are directly related to socioeconomic measures, as expected, but also to perceptions of family support (total, consistent-affective, of adaptation and autonomy) and of quality of life. The study shows evidence of statistical association among psychopathological symptoms (BSI), treatment adherence (CEAT-VIH) and quality of life (WHOQOL-Bref) in 125 HIV-positive/AIDS patients followed at Porto Hospital (Portugal). The psychopathological symptoms present a negative correlation with treatment adherence and quality of life. On the other hand, adherence was positively correlated with quality of life. The model of adherence to the antiretroviral treatment using multiple regression analysis includes absence of psychopathological symptoms, an adherence behavior (i.e. to get the medication at the hospital's pharmacy) and the experience of side effects because of medication (R2 = 0.30). Karst aquifers are particularly vulnerable to bacterial contamination. Especially in developing countries, poor microbial water quality poses a threat to human health. In order to develop effective groundwater protection strategies, a profound understanding of the hydrogeological setting is crucial. The goal of this study was to elucidate the relationships between high spatio-temporal variability in microbial contamination and the hydrogeological conditions. Based on extensive field studies, including mapping, tracer tests and hydrochemical analyses, a conceptual hydrogeological model was developed for a remote and geologically complex karst area in Northern Vietnam called Dong Van. Four different physicochemical water types were identified; the most important ones correspond to the karstified Bac Son and the fractured Na Quan aquifer. Alongside comprehensive investigation of the local hydrogeology, water quality was evaluated by analysis for three types of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB): Escherichia coli, enterococci and thermotolerant coliforms. The major findings are: (1) Springs from the Bac Son formation displayed the highest microbial contamination, while (2) springs that are involved in a polje series with connections to sinking streams were distinctly more contaminated than springs with a catchment area characterized by a more diffuse infiltration. (3) FIB concentrations are dependent on the season, with higher values under wet season conditions. Furthermore, (4) the type of spring capture also affects the water quality. Nevertheless, all studied springs were faecally impacted, along with several shallow wells within the confined karst aquifer. The application of statistical classification methods is investigated—in comparison also to spatial interpolation methods—for predicting the acceptability of well-water quality in a situation where an effective quantitative model of the hydrogeological system under consideration cannot be developed. In the example area in northern Italy, in particular, the aquifer is locally affected by saline water and the concentration of chloride is the main indicator of both saltwater occurrence and groundwater quality. The goal is to predict if the chloride concentration in a water well will exceed the allowable concentration so that the water is unfit for the intended use. A statistical classification algorithm achieved the best predictive performances and the results of the study show that statistical classification methods provide further tools for dealing with groundwater quality problems concerning hydrogeological systems that are too difficult to describe analytically or to simulate effectively. An understanding of the hydrogeology of Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) in northern Arizona, USA, is critical for future resource protection. The ~750 springs in GRCA provide both perennial and seasonal flow to numerous desert streams, drinking water to wildlife and visitors in an otherwise arid environment, and habitat for rare, endemic and threatened species. Spring behavior and flow patterns represent local and regional patterns in aquifer recharge, reflect the geologic structure and stratigraphy, and are indicators of the overall biotic health of the canyon. These springs, however, are subject to pressures from water supply development, changes in recharge from forest fires and other land management activities, and potential contamination. Roaring Springs is the sole water supply for residents and visitors (>6 million/year), and all springs support valuable riparian habitats with very high species diversity. Most springs flow from the karstic Redwall-Muav aquifer and show seasonal patterns in flow and water chemistry indicative of variable aquifer porosities, including conduit flow. They have Ca/Mg-HCO3 dominated chemistry and trace elements consistent with nearby deep wells drilled into the Redwall-Muav aquifer. Tracer techniques and water-age dating indicate a wide range of residence times for many springs, supporting the concept of multiple porosities. A perched aquifer produces small springs which issue from the contacts between sandstone and shale units, with variable groundwater residence times. Stable isotope data suggest both an elevational and seasonal difference in recharge between North and South Rim springs. This review highlights the complex nature of the groundwater system. The spatial coverage of hydraulic conductivity (K) values for large-scale groundwater investigations is often poor because of the high costs associated with hydraulic testing and the large areas under investigation. Domestic water wells are ubiquitous and their well logs represent an untapped resource of information that includes mandatory specific-capacity tests, from which K can be estimated. These specific-capacity tests are routinely conducted at such low pumping rates that well losses are normally insignificant. In this study, a simple and practical approach to augmenting high-quality K values with reconnaissance-level K values from water-well specific-capacity tests is assessed. The integration of lesser quality K values from specific-capacity tests with a high-quality K data set is assessed through comparisons at two different scales: study-area-wide (a 600-km2 area in Ontario, Canada) and in a single geological formation within a portion of the broader study area (200 km2). Results of the comparisons demonstrate that reconnaissance-level K estimates from specific-capacity tests approximate the ranges and distributions of the high-quality K values. Sufficient detail about the physical basis and assumptions that are invoked in the development of the approach are presented here so that it can be applied with confidence by practitioners seeking to enhance their spatial coverage of K values with specific-capacity tests. Investigation of surface water and groundwater interaction (SW-GW interaction) provides basic information for regional water-resource protection, management, and development. In this survey of a 10-km-wide area along both sides of the Songhua River, northeast China, the hydrogeochemical responses to different SW-GW interactions were studied. Three types of SW-GW interactions were identified—“recharge”, “discharge”, and “flow-through”—according to the hydraulic connection between the surface water and groundwater. The single factor index, principal component analysis, and hierarchical cluster analysis of the hydrogeochemistry and pollutant data illuminated the hydrogeochemical response to the various SW-GW interactions. Clear SW-GW interactions along the Songhua River were revealed: (1) upstream in the study area, groundwater usually discharges into the surface water, (2) groundwater is recharged by surface water downstream, and (3) discharge and flow-through coexist in between. Statistical analysis indicated that the degree of hydrogeochemical response in different types of hydraulic connection varied, being clear in recharge and flow-through modes, and less obvious in discharge mode.
