Owing to its high production volume and wide range of applications, polyethylene has gained a great deal of attention, but its low surface energy and non-polar nature have limited its application in some important fields. In this study, ethylene/11-iodo-1-undecene copolymers were prepared and used as the intermediates to afford a series of imidazolium-based ionomers bearing methanesulfonate (CH3SO3−), trifluoromethanesulfonate (CF3SO3−), or bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (Tf2N−) counteranions. The tensile test results showed that the stress-at-break (7.8–25.6 MPa) and the elongation-at-break (445%–847%) of the ionomers could be adjusted by changing the counterion species and the ionic group contents. Most importantly, the ionomers exhibited marvelous antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The ionomers bearing Tf2N− exhibited antibacterial activities >99% against both S. aureus and E. coli when ionic content reached 9.1%. The imidazolium-based ionomers prepared in this work demonstrated excellent comprehensive properties, especially high-efficient and broad-spectrum antibacterial ability, exhibiting the potential for the application as the antibacterial materials in packaging, medical, and other fields. The objectives of the study were to systematically evaluate the rehabilitation effect of noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) on upper extremity motor function and activities of daily living in stroke patients and to prioritize various stimulation protocols for reliable evidence-based medical recommendations in patients with upper extremity motor dysfunction after stroke. Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, and CBM were searched to collect all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of NIBS to improve upper extremity motor function in stroke patients. The retrieval time was from the establishment of all databases to May 2023. According to the Cochrane system evaluation manual, the quality of the included studies was evaluated, and the data were extracted. Statistical analysis was carried out by using RevMan 5.3, R 4.3.0, and Stata 17.0 software. Finally, 94 RCTs were included, with a total of 5546 patients. Meta-analysis showed that NIBS improved the Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA) score (mean difference (MD) = 6.51, 95% CI 6.20 ~ 6.82, P < 0.05), MBI score (MD = 7.69, 95% CI 6.57 ~ 8.81, P < 0.05), ARAT score (MD = 5.06, 95% CI 3.85 ~ 6.27, P < 0.05), and motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitude. The modified Ashworth scale score (MD = − 0.37, 95% CI − 0.60 to − 0.14, P < 0.05), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score (MD = − 2.17, 95% CI − 3.32 to − 1.11, P < 0.05), incubation period of MEP (MD = − 0.72, 95% CI − 1.06 to − 0.38, P < 0.05), and central motor conduction time (MD = − 0.90, 95% CI − 1.29 to − 0.50, P < 0.05) were decreased in stroke patients. Network meta-analysis showed that the order of interventions in improving FMA scores from high to low was anodal-transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) (surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) = 83.7%) > cathodal-tDCS (SUCRA = 80.2%) > high-frequency (HF)-repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) (SUCRA = 68.5%) > low-frequency (LF)-rTMS (SUCRA = 66.5%) > continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) (SUCRA = 54.2%) > bilateral-tDCS (SUCRA = 45.2%) > intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) (SUCRA = 34.1%) > sham-NIBS (SUCRA = 16.0%) > CR (SUCRA = 1.6%). In terms of improving MBI scores, the order from high to low was anodal-tDCS (SUCRA = 88.7%) > cathodal-tDCS (SUCRA = 85.4%) > HF-rTMS (SUCRA = 63.4%) > bilateral-tDCS (SUCRA = 56.0%) > LF-rTMS (SUCRA = 54.2%) > iTBS (SUCRA = 32.4%) > sham-NIBS (SUCRA = 13.8%) > CR (SUCRA = 6.1%). NIBS can effectively improve upper extremity motor function and activities of daily living after stroke. The study aimed to investigate the consistency and diversity between metabolic and structural brain networks at individual level constructed with divergence-based method in healthy Chinese population. The 18F-FDG PET and T1-weighted images of brain were collected from 209 healthy participants. The Jensen-Shannon divergence (JSD) was used to calculate metabolic or structural connectivities between any pair of brain regions and then individual brain networks were constructed. The global and regional topological properties of both networks were analyzed with graph theoretical analysis. Regional properties including nodal efficiency, degree, and betweenness centrality were used to define hub regions of networks. Cross-modality similarity of brain connectivity was analyzed with differential power (DP) analysis. The default mode network (DMN) had the largest number of brain connectivities with high DP values. The small-worldness indexes of metabolic and structural networks in all participants were greater than 1. The structural network showed higher assortativity and local efficiency than metabolic network, while hierarchy and global efficiency were greater in the metabolic network (all P < 0.001). Most of hubs in both networks were symmetrically spatial distributed in the regions of the DMN and subcortical nuclei including thalamus and amygdala, etc. The human brain presented small-world architecture both in perspective of individual metabolic and structural networks. There was a structural substrate that supported the brain to globally and efficiently integrate and process metabolic interaction across brain regions. Currently, the treatments for postparalysis facial synkinesis are still inadequate. However, neuroimaging mechanistic studies are very limited and blurred. Instead of mapping activation regions, we were devoted to characterizing the organizational features of brain regions to develop new targets for therapeutic intervention. Eighteen patients with unilateral facial synkinesis and 19 healthy controls were enrolled. They were instructed to perform task functional magnetic resonance imaging (eye blinking and lip pursing) examinations and resting-state scans. Then, we characterized group differences in task-state fMRI to identify three foci, including the contralateral precentral gyrus (PreCG), supramarginal gyrus (SMG), and superior parietal gyrus (SPG). Next, we employed a novel approach (using dynamic causal modeling) to identify directed connectivity differences between groups in different modes. Significant patterns in multiple regions in terms of regionally specific actions following synkinetic movements were demonstrated, although the resting state was not significant. The couplings from the SMG to the PreCG (p = 0.03) was significant in the task of left blinking, whereas the coupling from the SMG to the SPG (p = 0.04) was significant in the task of left smiling. We speculated that facial synkinesis affects disruption among the brain networks, and specific couplings that are modulated simultaneously can compensate for motor deficits. Therefore, behavioral or brain stimulation technique treatment could be applied to alter reorganization within specific couplings in the rehabilitation of facial function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Structural remodeling is a classic manifestation of disease decompensation. Facial synkinesis is the most troubling sequela of peripheral facial neuritis, and its structural remodeling, especially in white matter (WM), is still poorly understood. Therefore, understanding WM microstructure is important for predicting WM pathology and for early intervention in facial synkinesis patients. Methods: A total of 20 facial synkinesis patients (18 men and 2 women; mean age, 33.35 ± 6.97 years old) and 19 healthy controls (17 men and 2 women; mean age, 33.21 ± 6.75 years old) were enrolled in this study. rs-fMRI data, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data, and Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) data were collected, and tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) and voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) values were used to analyze changes in WM microstructure and interhemispheric coordination. Results: Compared with the healthy controls, facial synkinesis patients exhibited significantly lower regional fractional anisotropy (FA) in the genu of the corpus callosum and the body of the corpus callosum, significantly higher regional FA in the retrolenticular part of the internal capsule, and significantly decreased VMHC values bilaterally in the orbital inferior frontal gyri, the fusiform gyri, the superior temporal gyri, the superior frontal gyri, and the supplementary motor areas. Furthermore, a lower regional FA in the genu of the corpus callosum was correlated with higher BDI scores in facial synkinesis patients. Conclusion: Structural remodeling, especially changes in white matter microstructure, may be the central mechanism for severe sequelae of peripheral facial neuritis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate effect of metallic ion activation on different particle sizes of quartz in butyl xanthate solution, six common ions (Pb, Cu, Fe, Fe, Mg and Ca) were introduced as activators. The approaches of micro-flotation, adsorption test and zeta potential measurement were adopted to reveal the mechanism of ion activation. The results show that Pb, Cu and Fe are effective activators for the flotation of quartz in butyl xanthate solution because of their absorption on activated quartz surface. Average recoveries of fine particles (<37 μm) are greater than those of coarser particles (37−74 μm), suggesting that the former is easier to be activated and more likely to be floated and thus entrained in sulphide concentrate. From another perspective, addition of metallic ions (Pb, Cu and Fe) renders zeta potentials move positively, and addition of the same metallic ions and butyl xanthate makes zeta potential drop apparently, which support a mechanism where they adsorb onto quartz surface, resulting in an expected increase in butyl xanthate collector adsorption with a concomitant increase in the flotation recoveries. Erythropoietin (EPO) may become a potential therapeutic candidate for the treatment of the neurodegenerative disorder - Parkinson's disease (PD), since EPO has been found to prevent neuron apoptosis through the activation of cell survival signalling. However, the underlying mechanisms of how EPO exerts its neuroprotective effect are not fully elucidated. Here we investigated the mechanism by which EPO suppressed 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced neuron death in in vitro and in vivo models of PD. EPO knockdown conferred 6-OHDA-induced cytotoxicity. This effect was reversed by EPO administration. Treatment of PC12 cells with EPO greatly diminished the toxicity induced by 6-OHDA in a dose- and time-dependent manner. EPO effectively reduced apoptosis of striatal neurons and induced a significant improvement on the neurological function score in the rat models of PD. Furthermore, EPO increased the expression of phosphorylated Akt and phosphorylated FoxO3a, and abrogated the 6-OHDA-induced dysregulation of Bcl-2, Bax and Caspase-3 in PC12 cells and in striatal neurons. Meanwhile, the EPO-dependent neuroprotection was notably reversed by pretreatment with LY294002, a specific inhibitor of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). Our data suggest that PI3K/Akt/FoxO3a signalling pathway may be a possible mechanism involved in the neuroprotective effect of EPO in PD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is growing recognition in both evolutionary biology and anthropology that dispersal is key to establishing patterns of cooperation. However, some models predict that cooperation is more likely to evolve in low dispersal (viscous) populations, while others predict that local competition for resources inhibits cooperation. Sex-biased dispersal and extra-pair mating may also have an effect. Using economic games in Sino-Tibetan populations with strikingly different dispersal patterns, we measure cooperation in 36 villages in southwestern China; we test whether social structure is associated with cooperative behaviour toward those in the neighbourhood. We find that social organization is associated with levels of cooperation in public goods and dictator games and a resource dilemma; people are less cooperative towards other villagers in communities where dispersal by both sexes is low. Epigenetic regulations including DNA methylation and demethylation play critical roles in neural development. However, whether DNA methylation and demethylation may play a role in neuronal cell death remains largely unclear. Here we report that the blockade of DNA methyltransferase inhibits apoptosis of cerebellar granule cells and cortical neurons in response to oxidative stress. We found that knockdown of ten-eleven translocation methylcytosine dioxygenase (Tet1), a critical enzyme for DNA demethylation, significantly increase apoptosis of cerebellar granule cells induced by hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, cerebellar granule cells from tet1null mice appeared to be more sensitive to oxidative stress, suggesting the critical role of Tet1 in neuronal cell death. We further showed that the expression of Klotho, an antiaging protein, in cerebellar granule cells is tightly regulated by DNA methylation. Finally, we found that knockdown of Klotho diminished the rescue effects of DNA methyltransferase inhibitors and Tet1 on neuronal cell death induced by oxidative stress. Our work revealed the role of Tet1-mediated DNA demethylation on neuronal protection against oxidative stress and provided the molecular mechanisms underlying the epigenetic regulation of neuronal cell death, suggesting the role of Klotho in regulating neuronal cell death in response to oxidative stress.
