Developing nations like Bangladesh are particularly vulnerable to poultry diseases, notably Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. Adopting biosecurity approaches that assist farms in disease control and prevention can decrease the industry-wide dissemination of infectious diseases. In light of these factors, this study was carried out to investigate the implementation of biosecurity practices on layer farms in Bangladesh. Using a stratified random sample method, a total of 315 layer farms from fourteen upazilas (sub-districts) in seven districts were surveyed using a semi-structured interview schedule. The study explored layer farmers' experiences with biosecurity procedures adopted on farms that included equipment, employees, and visitors. The study found that the overall biosecurity score was 72.5 out of 100. It was concluded that internal biosecurity was better than external biosecurity. The study also revealed that layer farms have a larger proportion of partial adopters based on the adoption index. The application of the Tobit model identifies that education, farming experience, attitude towards risk, price of layer sheds, return from layer production, and access to biosecurity knowledge had a substantial influence on adopting biosecurity measures. The findings might be helpful for farmers and policymakers to ensure the required modifications to improve compliance with biosecurity protocols and could assist relevant authorities in implementing particular biosecurity initiatives. Recently, in Italy, consumers are choosing hen eggs from farming systems with higher ethical value, due to their perception of a related higher quality and safety. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the existence of differences in elemental content in Italian eggs from organic, barn, and caged hen farming methods and to determine the related potential consumer exposure risk to inorganic contaminants due to the consumption of eggs. One hundred seventy-six egg samples were collected and analyzed using Q-ICP-MS to investigate the content of 14 elements (Pb, As, Hg, Cd, Tl, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Se, Co, Ni, V, and Cr) and 13 rare earth elements (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb). The scenarios of exposure to rare earth and other elements from eggs were estimated for three age groups of consumers. The daily intake values were always lower than the respective safety reference values. In conclusion, Italian hen eggs contain low levels of rare earth and other elements, and therefore, their consumption does not represent a risk of exposure. There is a growing trend to implement biosecurity measures in small commercial broiler flocks and trying to replace ineffective antimicrobial with alternative materials to interevent a strategy for the control of Campylobacter bacteria in these farms. This study was designed to determine the prevalence rate of Campylobacter spp. in broiler flocks and their environment. Thereafter, assess the efficiency of chitosan, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), and chitosan/ZnO NPs composite against Campylobacter strains to adopt a novel control strategy based on the ability to use those nanocomposites. A total of 220 samples were collected from broiler flocks, their environment, and farm attendants that direct contact with birds. All samples were subjected to microbiological investigation for isolation, then molecular identification of bacteria using PCR. ZnO NPs and chitosan/ZnO NPs composite were synthesized then characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (X-RD). The efficiency of testing compounds was examined against 30 strains of Campylobacter coli (C. coli) to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The highest percentages of C. coli were isolated from the manure storage area, and broiler litter followed by flies, and feeders (66.7, 53.3, 40.0, and 33.3%, respectively). Both chitosan/ZnO NPs and ZnO NPs at a concentration of 0.5 μg/mL and 1.5 μg/mL, respectively showed complete efficiency (100%) against C. coli compared with chitosan compound. In conclusion, manure storage area and broiler litter represented the main reservoir of Campylobacter bacterial contaminant followed by flies in broiler poultry farms. The cross-sectional study of heavy metals and aflatoxins was conducted by studying duck egg, blood, liver, feed, and water samples from 11 free grazing farms. The duck feed, soil, and rice samples were lower than the standard limit for aflatoxins at 20 ng g−1. The highest levels of aflatoxin were detected in the liver, intestine, and egg yolk; these were 3.04, 1.73, and 4.56 ng g−1 respectively, while the average levels were 1.6 ± 0.73, 1.31 ± 0.23, and 1.87 ± 0.99 ng g−1, respectively. Interestingly, aflatoxin was not detected in any of the egg white albumin samples (90/90 samples), whereas aflatoxin contamination was predominantly found in the yolk. Additionally, the means and standard deviations of Pb and Cd found in the duck eggs were 118.61 ± 22.25 and 13.84 ± 9.06 ng g−1 respectively. The maximum levels of Pb and Cd in eggs were 134.34 and 29.72 ng g−1, respectively. Moreover, Pb contamination occurred in the duck liver tissue in 93.61% (88/94) of the samples, whereas Cd contamination was found in 100% (100/100). The maximum levels of Pb and Cd in the duck liver tissues were 606.16 and 22,946.20 ng g−1, which was higher than those in the eggs. Pb contamination in the water from rice paddy fields after grazing was significantly higher than that in water samples taken before grazing. Purpose: Soil erosion is a threat for the sustainability of the grove production all over the world, and olive groves are where the highest erosion is achieved. This study aimed to (1) evaluate soil loss from water erosion in microplots (1 m) under natural rainfall events in an olive grove managed with tillage and three different cover crops; (2) determine the main climatic factors on soil loss and selective transportation; and (3) survey the willingness of local farmers to adopt cover crops. Materials and methods: Over four hydrological years (2010 to 2014), tillage and three cover crop treatments have been assessed in a sloping olive grove in the Mediterranean area, in a semiarid climate and gypsiferous soil. The treatments were tillage (once a year), two annual covers (barley and legumes) and a permanent cover ( Brachypodium distachyon). Soil loss was collected after each rainfall event, dried and weighted. Rainfall data was recorded and soil cover (%) was determined. Organic carbon (% OC) and texture were measured for sediments of tillage treatment to study their selective transportation. Local farmers were polled regarding their knowledge of the biophysical factors that affect soil conservation, their management practices and their willingness to adopt sustainable land management practices as cover crops. Results and discussion: The tillage treatment exhibited the highest soil loss (6.8 t ha year). Cover crops significantly reduced soil loss: 40 % for legumes, 60 % for barley and permanent cover led to an 80 % decrease (1.4 t ha year). The soil loss depends mainly on the soil cover and kinetic energy of rainfall events. Vegetation cover higher than 40 % in autumn and spring was essential to limiting soil loss, even under heavy events. Mobilised sediments were enriched 2.4 times in OC and 1.6 in the clay fraction. In spite of the well-known benefits of cover crops in soil conservation, local farmers do not use them. A lack of environmental education and awareness has been detected. Conclusions: Tillage in olive groves produced unsustainable rates of soil loss, while permanent cover demonstrated high efficiency. Gypsiferous soils are vulnerable to water erosion processes if they are not protected by vegetation. Farmers should adopt tailored soil cover practices during spring and autumn, when the soil loss is higher. A few farmers use sustainable soil management techniques, and therefore cover crops in olive groves are rare in Central Spain because farmers are reluctant to change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Raising chickens for eggs in urban areas is becoming increasingly common. Urban chickens may be exposed to lead, a common urban soil contaminant. We measured lead concentrations in chicken eggs from New York City (NYC) community gardens and collected information on factors that might affect those concentrations. Lead was detected between 10 and 167 μg/kg in 48 % of NYC eggs. Measures of lead in eggs from a henhouse were significantly associated ( p < 0.005) with lead concentrations in soil. The association between soil and egg lead has been evaluated only once before, by a study of a rural region in Belgium. In our study, the apparent lead soil-to-egg transfer efficiency was considerably lower than that found in Belgium, suggesting that there may be important geographic differences in this transfer. We developed models that suggested that, for sites like ours, lead concentrations in >50 % of eggs from a henhouse would exceed store-bought egg concentrations (<7-13 μg/kg; 3 % above detection limit) at soil lead concentrations >120 mg/kg and that the concentration in one of six eggs from a henhouse would exceed a 100 μg/kg guidance value at soil lead concentrations >410 mg/kg. Our models also suggested that the availability of dietary calcium supplements was another influential factor that reduced egg lead concentrations. Estimates of health risk from consuming eggs with the lead concentrations we measured generally were not significant. However, soil lead concentrations in this study were <600 mg/kg, and considerably higher concentrations are not uncommon. A simple, sensitive and rapid liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method (LC-MS/MS) was developed and validated to monitor the presence of gabapentin as environmental contaminant in albumen and yolk of eggs from grazing flocks exposed to open air stored saline wastes from pharmaceutical industry. The method involved a simple liquid extraction followed by a gradient elution with formic acid 0.2 % and acetonitrile in reverse phase. ESI ionization was performed in positive ion mode. The tandem mass spectrometer was operated in multiple reaction monitoring mode. The calibration curves were linear in the concentration range from 5 to 400 ng/g for the two matrices with correlation coefficients that exceeded 0.990. The limits of quantitation were 12.0 and 14.8 ng/g in albumen and yolk, respectively. Results are discussed in light of the pharmacokinetics of gabapentin in experimentally exposed hens, accounting for the top soil intake in such free grazing animals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In the past, cases of PCDD/F and PCB contamination exceeding limits in food from animal origin (eggs, meat or milk) were mainly caused by industrially produced feed. But in the last decade, exceedances of EU limit values were discovered more frequently for PCDD/Fs or dioxin-like(dl)-PCBs from free range chicken, sheep, and beef, often in the absence of any known contamination source.Results: The German Environment Agency initiated a project to elucidate the entry of PCBs and PCDD/Fs in food related to environmental contamination. This paper summarizes the most important findings. Food products from farm animals sensitive to dioxin/PCB exposure—suckling calves and laying hens housed outdoor—can exceed EU maximum levels at soil concentrations that have previously been considered as safe. Maximum permitted levels can already be exceeded in beef/veal when soil is contaminated around 5 ng PCB-TEQ/kg dry matter (dm). For eggs/broiler, this can occur at a concentration of PCDD/Fs in soil below 5 ng PCDD/F-PCB-TEQ/kg dm. Egg consumers—especially young children—can easily exceed health-based guidance values (TDI). The soil-chicken egg exposure pathway is probably the most sensitive route for human exposure to both dl-PCBs and PCDD/Fs from soil and needs to be considered for soil guidelines. The study also found that calves from suckler cow herds are most prone to the impacts of dl-PCB contamination due to the excretion/accumulation via milk. PCB (and PCDD/F) intake for free-range cattle stems from feed and soil. Daily dl-PCB intake for suckler cow herds must in average be less than 2 ng PCB-TEQ/day. This translates to a maximum concentration in grass of 0.2 ng PCB-TEQ/kg dm which is less than 1/6 of the current EU maximum permitted level. This review compiles sources for PCDD/Fs and PCBs relevant to environmental contamination in respect to food safety. It also includes considerations on assessment of emerging POPs.Conclusions: The major sources of PCDD/F and dl-PCB contamination of food of animal origin in Germany are (1) soils contaminated from past PCB and PCDD/F releases; (2) PCBs emitted from buildings and constructions; (3) PCBs present at farms. Impacted areas need to be assessed with respect to potential contamination of food-producing animals. Livestock management techniques can reduce exposure to PCDD/Fs and PCBs. Further research and regulatory action are needed to overcome gaps. Control and reduction measures are recommended for emission sources and new listed and emerging POPs to ensure food safety.
