The objective was to identify the best stocking density in the initial grow-out phase of tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) using biofloc technology (BFT) and evaluate the effects of the densities on water quality, zootechnical performance and the metabolic profile of fish and production costs. Juveniles (56.5 ± 1.69 g) were reared in the densities: 15 (BFT15), 30 (BFT30) and 45 (BFT45) fish.m−3, in triplicate, for 80 days. The use of BFT inoculum at the beginning contributed to the maintenance of adequate ammonia and nitrite concentrations at all densities, though with a higher nitrite concentration in BFT45. Electrical conductivity (EC), nitrite, total suspended solids (TSS), pH, alkalinity and hardness were different (p < 0.05) between BFT15 and BFT45. EC and TSS increased according to the increase in density, and were higher in BFT45. The highest final weight and specific growth rate were observed in BFT15, while the apparent feed conversion was lower for BFT15 and BFT30 compared to BFT45 (p < 0.05). Biomass and productivity were higher (p < 0.05) in BFT45. The values of hematocrit, number of erythrocytes and the hemoglobin concentration were higher in BFT45 (p < 0.05). Regarding production costs, the highest average feed expenditure occurred in BFT45; however, expenditure with electricity was lower at this density. The increase in biomass in BFT45 generated the reduction of the partial average cost (ACp). It can therefore be concluded that the best stocking density for initial grow out of tambaqui is 45 fish.m−3, since it presents better productivity and biomass, lower ACp and average expenditure on electricity when using BFT. Biofloc technology (BFT) has been identified as an effective and sustainable aquaculture method, particularly beneficial for warm-water species in tropical areas. This technology is widely used in intensive aquaculture for several aquatic species due to its capacity to significantly reduce water exchange rates, benefiting both production systems and the environment. The efficacy of BFT in farming operations is directly related to a proper management of water quality parameters within the optimal range of the target species, as these parameters directly impact the yield of production units. Essentially, BFT functions as a water quality management system, converting harmful nitrogenous waste such as ammonia and nitrite into less harmful forms such as nitrates through microbial activity, ensuring the health of aquatic organisms. Key environmental factors such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, salinity, alkalinity, TAN, nitrite, nitrate, settleable solids (SS), and total suspended solids (TSS) can affect the growth of aquatic species and the functionality of the microbial community. This review brings (i) a comprehensive bibliometric analysis on biofloc and water quality, (ii) highlights optimal ranges, and (iii) key observations of several water parameters including temperature, salinity, nitrogenous compounds, SS, TSS, DO, phosphate, pH, and alkalinity in BFT rearing conditions for key aquatic species. Elements such as countries, thematic and keywords, and authors were explored, correlated, and discussed. In addition, this manuscript also (iv) discusses the presence of heavy metals and microplastics (MPs) in BFT culture water. A dedicated review on water quality in biofloc technology will contribute to future research and development (R&D) in this topic, support decision-making to improve farming operations, and can help further expansion of BFT-based aquaculture. The reduction of suspended solids is an important aspect of water management, especially in the mining industry. The ecological potential of sedimentation ponds has been identified, but many aspects of the coexistence of ecological and technological functions of these reservoirs are still unresolved. The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of suspended solid reduction in an open pit mine drainage system under the influence of biotic factors, including fish, taking into account the hydrochemical background. The dynamics of biotic factors and the sedimentation process were identified using the normalized total suspended solid reduction index (TE) and the trophic group status (TGS) indices of planktivorous, benthivorous, and carnivorous fish. The hydrochemical background in both ponds provided similar habitat conditions for biota and suspended solid reduction. Although a moderately trophic ecosystem has developed, the typical relationship between water transparency (SDD) and chlorophyll a concentration characteristic of natural waters was not observed. The sedimentation complex was found to be highly effective in reducing total suspended solids by 89–93%. Spatial variation of sedimentation rates was related to the ichthyobiotic factor, mainly to the biomass of bentophages and the status of this trophic group in the fish community. Stable relationships in the structure of the ichthyofauna with a balanced proportion of planktivorous fishes favored the sedimentation process. The results obtained are part of the development of research on the possibility of combining the technological function of artificial ponds with other applications and ecological benefits for industrialized areas. The present study aims to characterize three industrial wastewater samples collected from petrochemical, food and beet sugar industries to determine the pollution potential and select the appropriate pre-treatment approach. According to the biodegradability profile of the multi-sourced mixed (composite) sample, the advanced oxidation process (AOPs) namely, Fenton (F) and Electro-Fenton (EF) were adopted as pre-treatment techniques and the operating parameters such as time, type of electrodes, pH, voltage, iron and H2O2 concentrations were critically examined. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was conducted to compare the performance efficiency of F& EF AOPs for treating the composite samples and the total operating costs for both approaches were assessed. The results revealed that, the initial values of the composite sample were 7.11, 19.2, 32.6, 19.3, 937, 1512, 860, 3.9, 2110 and 2.34 for pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Electrical Conductivity (EC), Salinity, BOD, COD, Oil and grease (O&G), Total Phosphorous (TP), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), respectively. In addition, EF process achieved more removal efficiency for COD, O&G, BOD, TSS, and TKN (84.3%, 69%, 85%, 72% and 71.27%) compared to Fenton which displayed 78.43%, 66%, 69%, 70.1%, and 61%, respectively. Moreover, there are statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) between the initial and final (pretreated) values of the composite industrial wastewater for the addressed parameters and EF was significantly (p < 0.05) more effective than F process. The total operating costs were 3.117 and 2.063$ for F and EF, respectively, which confirmed that EF is more efficient and cost effective than F process. It was concluded that electro-Fenton process is favorable, eco-friendly and cost-effective option for pretreating real complicated multi-sourced industrial wastewater. This research explores the enhancement of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes through the incorporation of chitosan derived from the lignicolous fungus Ganoderma sp. Utilizing wet phase inversion and solution casting techniques, chitosan was successfully integrated into the PES matrix, as confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), which indicated a high deacetylation degree of 75.7%. The incorporation of chitosan significantly increased the membrane hydrophilicity, as evidenced by a reduction in the water contact angle and a substantial improvement in pure water permeability, from 17.9 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 to 27.3 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. The membrane anti-fouling properties were also notably enhanced, with the Flux Recovery Ratio (FRR) increasing from approximately 60–80%. Moreover, the chitosan-modified PES/CS membrane, particularly at a 5% chitosan concentration, demonstrated exceptional efficacy in pollutant removal, achieving over 90% elimination of total suspended solids, cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), alongside a 79% reduction in color during the treatment of textile wastewater. This study interrogates the state of social-ecological landscapes (SEL) in West Africa, focusing on two case studies: the Mankran SEL in Ghana (case study 1) and the Doma–Rutu SEL in Nigeria (case study 2). Using a mix of methods, the assessment was framed by the Drivers Pressure State Impact Response (DPSIR) model tailored for SEL evaluation (DPSIR-SEL). In the Mankran landscape, land use patterns shifted significantly from 2008 to 2018, with cash crop cultivation peaking at 30% in 2015 before declining to 14.5% by 2018. Water quality assessments in the Mankran micro-watershed indicated that several parameters, including Total Suspended Solids (TSS) at 914.41 ± 1974 mg/L, lead at 18.73 ± 17.26 µg/L, and arsenic at 53.41 ± 86.66 µg/L, exceeded World Health Organization (WHO) standards, raising concerns about potential contamination. In contrast, the Doma–Rutu landscape in Nigeria experienced land use and land cover (LULC) changes from 2000 to 2022, characterized by the expansion of residential and agricultural areas alongside modifications to natural water bodies and vegetation. Water quality issues have emerged, with elevated levels of electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, and salinity. Furthermore, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) revealed persistent herder-farmer conflicts in Nigeria, which have historically constrained crop production due to various environmental and social factors. The intertwined challenges faced by both the Mankran and Doma–Rutu landscapes underscore the urgent need for sustainable and inclusive resource management, adaptive land-use strategies, and proactive measures to safeguard water quality. This study aimed at studying the feasibility of using a sediment model built in HEC – HMS incorporating Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE) in aiding the separation of sediment contribution as point and non-point, an important aspect in sediment pollution control. The model was developed and verified using a representative sub-catchment and a canal reach of a tropical climate. The field observations and model developed had a good agreement and indicated about 16% and 35% of total sediments in the canal may be from nonpoint sources for the dry and wet seasons, respectively. Results suggested that a major fraction of eroded sediment ended up in the main canal through the dense drainage network across the catchment. This meant sediment trapping should focus tributary drainage ditches or at point source inputs to canal rather than the main canal banks. The study recognized that HEC – HMS is also capable of simulating sediment generation with acceptable errors. Fast urbanization can result in significant stormwater runoff pollution due to changes in land use. A 3-year study on the distribution and temporal variations of urban water pollutants in stormwater runoff was conducted, with a specific focus on the influence of land-use patterns in the recharge zone of a regional karst aquifer in Texas (Edwards Aquifer). The presence and concentration of various water pollutants including total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), nutrients (nitrite, nitrate, ammonia and phosphate), total carbon (TC) and total organic carbon (TOC), oil and grease (O&G), and eight heavy metals (Fe, Mg, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd) were measured in stormwater samples collected from three bioswales. Results show that average TSS in site S1 (598.87 mg/L) and S2 (628.69 mg/L), COD in site S1 (103.97 mg/L), phosphate in sites S1 (1.44 mg/L) and S3 (0.65 mg/L), and O&G (ranging from 50.63 to 84.32 mg/L) in all three sites surpassed the national average (NSQD). While residential areas were identified as the main sources of nutrients, roads and parking lots were associated with heavy metals. Temporal variations indicated the effect of antecedent dry days on the concentrations of TSS and phosphate. Growing seasons as well as pet feces were associated with elevated nitrate concentrations in residential areas. Organic carbon was found overall higher during warmer months, while heavy metals during cooler months. The study also identified specific land-use practices that can be enhanced to mitigate stormwater pollution, such as the implementation of permeable pavements, rain gardens, and stricter waste disposal regulations. In shrimp farming, the development of alternative production systems, such as fermented products, can help reduce the high dependence on artificial diets and ensure more sustainable growth. The "synbiotic system" typically uses low stocking densities in traditional earth ponds. To increase profitability, the tendency is to increase stocking densities, especially in small production units. The objective of the following work was to use the "synbiotic system" in different stocking densities, analyzing the water quality, the microorganisms present, the proximal composition of the formed bioflocs and the zootechnical performance. For this, 12 tanks with an area of 35 m2 each were used. Stocking densities were 30, 60, 90 and 120 shrimp/m2. Fertilization was carried out for seven days before the shrimp stocking and then every two days until the end of the experiment. The experiment lasted 45 days, and no water was renewed. Significant differences were observed in several quality parameters, including alkalinity, nitrate, total suspended solids, and turbidity. However, no significant differences were found in the proximal composition of the formed bioflocs. The presence of microorganisms throughout the experimental period indicated the effectiveness of adding fermented rice bran for nutrient assimilation. Furthermore, significant differences were observed in the final weight, feed conversion rate and productivity. The ability of the synbiotic system to provide food supplementation, control water quality and present satisfactory zootechnical performance was demonstrated, proving to be efficient in the cultivation of Litopenaeus vannamei. The objective of this study was to explore the environmental factors having the greatest influence on the distribution and abundance of epipelic diatom species in different wetlands in southern Spain. We previously defined four groups of conductivity categories: fresh (< 0.8 mS cm−1), oligosaline (< 8 mS cm−1), mesosaline (8–30 mS cm−1) and eusaline (> 30 mS cm−1). A dbRDA analysis performed on a subset of 36 of the 53 wetlands, using a total of 25 environmental variables, showed that five environmental variables (conductivity, pH, wetland area, silicates, and total suspended solids) were the best explanatory variables for the diatom assemblage, with conductivity being the main explanatory variable. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) analysis performed on the set of 53 wetlands revealed significant differences in diatom composition among the four conductivity groups. The key species in the eusaline group were Tryblionella pararostrata, Halamphora sp.1 and Cocconeis euglypta, whereas in the mesosaline and oligosaline group, these were Navicula veneta, Tryblionella hungarica and Nitzschia inconspicua. Finally, in the fresh group dominated Achnanthidium minutissimum, Navicula veneta and Gomphonema exilissimum. This study aims to investigate the effect of different seasons (where the temperature would be different) on the performance (phosphorous, nitrogen, and organic matter removal) of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) based wastewater treatment plants. The modified activated sludge model 2D (ASM2d) module, including the microbial kinetics is used to simulate the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) SBR process and the temperature is chosen between 10 and 33°C. Influent data from two distinct wastewater treatment plants located in India and Europe are considered. The investigation of the kinetic variables is performed over a wide temperature range, and significant increases are seen as the temperature rises. The effluent parameters are within the government regulations. It is clear that an increase in temperature results in better effluent quality with reduced values of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonium nitrogen and ammonium ions (NH4), and total nitrogen (TN) and a slight increase in total phosphorus (TP) and total suspended solids (TSS). According to the current findings, as the temperature changes from low to high levels, the values of COD, BOD, TN, and NH4 decreased by 2.50, 14.92, 5.80, and 9.90% respectively, for Indian data. There is a slight increase of 1.07% in the TSS profile. Wastewater generated in dairies has a strong polluting potential and must be treated for disposal into water bodies or reuse. The objective of this work was to analyze the efficiency of removing pollutants through the processes used by a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of a dairy located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. For this purpose, the results of the characterization analyses referring to raw and treated wastewater were interpreted. The results showed that the sequence of processes used in the WWTP (water/oil separation, dissolved air flotation, followed by biodegradation in an upflow anaerobic filter) is efficient in removing on average 99.1% of COD and 98.7% of BOD5. For treated wastewater, data on pH and concentration of total suspended solids, total ammoniacal nitrogen, surfactants, settleable solids, and oils and greases also met the standards for disposal into water bodies. For reuse in agriculture, treated wastewater can be used for irrigation, but it is recommended to additionally evaluate the Escherichia coli parameter. When evaluating the existence of linear correlation between COD and BOD5 data, it was possible to find only a moderate correlation (R2 equal to 0.7) for treated wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The swift pace of industrialization, urbanization, and burgeoning populations propel the surge in demand for manufactured goods and infrastructure. The wastewater produced during leather processing comprises a cocktail of organic and inorganic chemical contaminants that have the potential to affect the environment. This study focuses on conducting a comparative physico-chemical, analytical, in vitro, and in silico toxicity assessment and monitoring of leather effluent discharged from two different areas, namely, Dewas and Ranipet. The physicochemical analysis of collected effluents revealed higher levels of biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, and heavy metals than the permissible limit fixed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The X-ray powder diffraction analysis of both samples identified the existence of crystalline and amorphous phases. The functional composition of compounds was identified through the analysis of Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, which revealed the existence of C-H, O–H, N–H, C = O, C=C, and C≡C stretching vibrations. A variety of compound derivatives, including amines, organic acids, organometallic compounds, alcohols, hydrocarbons, esters, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic, and organogermanium, were identified by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. An assessment and monitoring of the phytotoxicity of effluent on the germination of Vigna radiata seeds reveals that (100%) of both Dewas and Ranipet leather effluents inhibited seed germination by 33.34% and 100%. The incorporation of Absorption-Distribution-Metabolism-Excretion-Toxicity (ADMET) analysis improved comprehension of the toxicity profiles of the GC–MS-identified compounds. Moreover, the result of docking studies revealed that cytochrome P450 showed the highest binding affinity towards 1,3-benzodioxol-2-one, hexahydro-cis with an affinity score of − 7.1 kcal/mol. The overall research revealed that the leather effluents from Dewas and Ranipet exhibit significant toxicity, highlighting the necessity of better wastewater management. Soil and water characteristics in micro basins with different land uses/land cover (LULC) can influence riparian vegetation diversity, stream water quality, and benthic diatom diversity. We analyzed 18 streams in the upper part of the La Antigua River basin, México, surrounded by cloud forests, livestock pastures, and coffee plantations. Concentrations of P, C, and N were elevated in the humus of forested streams compared to other land uses. In contrast, cations, ammonium, and total suspended solids (TSS) of water streams were higher in pastures and coffee plantations. These results indicate that LULC affects stream chemistry differently across land uses. Vegetation richness was highest (86–133 spp.) in forest streams and lowest in pastures (46–102), whereas pasture streams had the greatest richness of diatoms (9–24), likely due to higher light and temperatures. Some soil and water characteristics correlated with both true diversity and taxonomic diversity; soil carbon exchange capacity (CEC) correlated with vegetation diversity (r = 0.60), while water temperature correlated negatively (r = − 0.68). Diatom diversity was related to soil aluminum (r = − 0.59), magnesium (r = 0.57), water phosphorus (r = 0.88), and chlorophyll (r = 0.75). These findings suggest that land use affects riparian vegetation, while physical and chemical changes influence diatom diversity in stream water and soil. The lack of correlation between vegetation and diatom diversity indicates that one cannot predict the other. This research is an essential first step in understanding how land use changes impact vegetation and diatom diversity in mountain landscapes, providing valuable insights for environmental monitoring and conservation efforts in tropical cloud forests. The escalating challenges posed by municipal landfill leachate (MUNL) necessitate the quest for green and sustainable solutions. This study aims to introduce Parkia biglobosa seed extract (PKSE) as a potential novel eco-friendly flocculant for efficacious removal of total suspended solids (TSS) from MUNL. Real MUNL samples were obtained from an active landfill managed by Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) Nigeria, enabling the optimization of operational parameters. The objectives encompass assessing PKSE applicability in MUNL treatment, extending beyond removal efficiency; optimizing the MUNL remediation process using response surface methodology (RSM); conducting a comprehensive cost–benefit analysis; exploring the coagulation–flocculation kinetics governing the treatment process; and utilizing optimized parameters for designing a type II settling tank. Physiochemical characteristics of PKSE were determined via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methodologies, which revealed its suitability for this purpose. Optimal conditions unveil a remarkable TSS: 95.84% with a 29-min settling time, employing 50 mg/L PKSE dosage at pH 12. Stochastic appraisal endorses cost–benefit viability and sedimentation models, ensuring residuals ≤ 30 mg/L. The proposed tank geometry (aspect ratio of 2/1) aligns with MUNL concentration, offering a pragmatic design implication. The increasing pollution of river systems poses a significant challenge to water quality management and public health. This study was conducted to evaluate the water quality of the Gomati River in India, focusing on the impact of anthropogenic activities on pollution levels across different seasons. The primary objective was to develop a comprehensive assessment model using an effective weighted fuzzy soft expert system (WFSES) to derive a weighted water pollution score (WWP-score) for rating water pollution levels based on various water quality parameters. To achieve this, we employed a fuzzy soft set (FSS) methodology integrated with a weighted fuzzy soft set (WFSS) model to analyze water quality indices at six sampling stations along the Gomati River, the largest river in Tripura, India. Originating from the Raima and Sarma streams, the river flows westward through key regions, providing 249.39 million cubic meters of water annually, essential for drinking, agriculture, fishing, and transportation. The study utilized crisp data summaries of key water quality parameters, including pH, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, electrical conductivity, biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, total hardness, chloride, total alkalinity, and total coliform, across the pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons from May 2022 to April 2023, guided by the distribution of waste discharge points. Fuzzy membership functions were defined for these parameters, and the root mean square (RMSQR) operation was used to combine multiple FSSs. The results revealed that the WWP-scores, a measure of water quality, ranged from 0.744 to 0.872 across the sampling stations, with Srimantapur exhibiting the highest level of pollution and Udaipur showing comparatively better quality. These scores indicate that water quality at all sites falls into the poor category, with Srimantapur experiencing the most severe contamination due to high levels of coliform bacteria and organic pollutants. The analysis highlights the impact of domestic wastewater and agricultural runoff on the river's health. This research offers a novel application of FSS and WFSS theory in environmental management, providing a robust framework for evaluating and ranking water quality across multiple parameters. Vibrio spp. is a group of heterotrophic bacteria that are ubiquitous in marine habitats, with various ecological and clinical importance. This study investigated the environmental factors that regulate Vibrio spp. dynamics in various tropical marine habitats, including nearshore (an estuary and a coastal beach) and offshore transects located northwest and southeast of Peninsular Malaysia, while focusing on the distribution of attached and free-living Vibrio spp., population growth, and community composition. The results showed that > 85% of the Vibrio spp. in nearshore waters occurred in attached form and correlated positively to total suspended solids (TSS) and Chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations. On the other hand, Vibrio spp. growth rates were positively correlated to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, but negatively correlated to total bacterial counts, likely due to resource competition. In addition, high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA V3-V4 region showed that Vibrio spp. in these tropical waters contributed < 1 − 18% of the whole bacterioplankton community, and the six major Vibrio spp. taxa were V. alginolyticus group, V. brasiliensis, V. caribbeanicus, V. hepatarius group, V. splendidus group and V. thalassae. db-RDA (cumulative variance explicated = 93.53%) further revealed the influence of TSS, DOC, and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) to the Vibrio spp. community profiles. This study highlights the importance of managing fishpond effluent to minimize its impact on aquatic environments. Fish effluents are a major concern worldwide in aquatic environments. It also provides information on the impacts of effluents on the water quality index of streams when released into aquatic environments. Streams and fishponds were sampled bimonthly for two annual cycles, covering different sampling stations both upstream and downstream of the fishpond effluents at 50-m intervals. Water quality parameters associated with in situ conditions were determined in the field. In the laboratory, other physicochemical parameters were determined via proper standard protocols. The results of the study revealed that water quality parameters such as turbidity, total suspended solids, total solids, conductivity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand and organic matter recorded in water samples collected from 50 m upstream at the point of effluent discharge were significantly (p < 0.05) different from those recorded at other sampling stations. The WQI value of the discharge point was higher than the WQI recorded in both the upstream and downstream sections of the stream. The findings of this study showed that the point of discharge of fishpond effluents is particularly concerning for the receiving stream compared with other sampling points. This localized area has experienced marked deterioration in water quality, posing significant threats to the health and biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems. The effluent's impact, though slight when dispersed in the receiving waterbody, underscores the necessity for adequate management practices to mitigate its adverse effects. LED spectrophotometry is a robust technique for the indirect characterization of wastewater pollutant load through correlation modeling. To tackle this issue, a dataset with 1300 samples was collected, from both raw and treated wastewater from 45 wastewater treatment plants in Spain and Chile collected over 4 years. The type of regressor, scaling, and dimensionality reduction technique and nature of the data play crucial roles in the performance of the processing pipeline. Eighty-four pipelines were tested through exhaustive experimentation resulting from the combination of 7 regression techniques, 3 scaling methods, and 4 possible dimensional reductions. Those combinations were tested on the prediction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS). Each pipeline underwent a tenfold cross-validation on 15 sub-datasets derived from the original dataset, accounting for variations in plants and wastewater types. The results point to the normalization of the data followed by a conversion through the PCA to finally apply a Random Forest Regressor as the combination which stood out These results highlight the importance of modeling strategies in wastewater management using techniques such as LED spectrophotometry. Open-cast coal mining operations can produce water with high amounts of total suspended solids (TSS). We tested the use of electrocoagulation for the removal of colloidal clay from mine water. Monopolar batch electrocoagulation was performed at the laboratory scale using Al and Fe electrodes and varying the DC current (0.5, 1, and 2 A) and contact time (15, 30, and 45 min). Aluminum electrode electrocoagulation with a current of 2 A and a contact time of 15 min had the greatest TSS removal efficiency (99%), with concentrations decreasing from 5,400 to 23 mg/L. The greatest removal (98 and 99%, respectively) was obtained using an Al electrode with an electric current of 0.5 and 1 A, with 30 min of contact time. With an Fe electrode, the greatest efficiency was achieved with a current of 2 A and a contact time of 30 min. The goal of this research was to assess the efficiency of the liquid digestate treatment conducted with algal, environmental isolates illuminated entirely with sunlight. The photobioreactor was exposed to natural conditions and evaluated based on the reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen compounds, and soluble phosphates. Microalgal and bacterial communities growing during the treatment process were studied. A high removal rate of soluble COD (= 91%) and nutrients (= 86%) was achieved. The average concentrations of nitrogen, phosphates, and COD in the reactor effluent were 95 mgN/L, 49 mg/L, and 735 mg O2/L, respectively. The overall algae-bacteria biomass productivity of 22 mg/L/d, calculated on the total suspended solids (TSS) basis, was recorded. The microbial analysis revealed the dominance of Tetradesmus obliquus followed by Microglena sp. in the first 14 weeks of the experiment. At the end of the experimental run, Chlorella sorokiniana cells appeared as a result of illumination intensity changes. The dominating bacteria belonged to Firmicutes (26.31%), Patescibacteria (17.38%), and Actinobacteriota (14.86%) and could have been responsible for the transformation of nitrogen and oxidation of organic contaminants. Effluent reuse is a rapidly growing field of research where assessing the quality of effluent is one of the focus areas. This research examines the viability of using wastewater in agriculture by testing an integrated Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor with a trickling filter (TF) system during the dry season. Compliance monitoring was conducted for 30 days from May 11 to June 9 of 2021. Samples were collected, handled, and analyzed following standard wastewater analysis procedures for biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), volatile suspended solids (VSS), cations, anions, heavy metals, E. coli, and helminth egg. The UASB-TF system in Kality wastewater treatment performed well in removing COD, BOD5, and TSS with average removal rates of 80.5%, 82.9%, and 80.9%, respectively, compared well with similar treatment configurations. The effluent quality satisfied the national inland discharge limit with a residual concentration of 125.1 mg/L for COD, 61.7 mg/L for BOD5 and 85.8 mg/L for TSS. On the other hand, high concentrations of chromium, nitrate-nitrogen, and helminth egg count restricted effluent reuse for agricultural purposes due to high health risks and environmental contamination. We found out that discharging industrial sewage into the domestic sewer network could inhibit microbial growth and affect the biological treatment processes. Furthermore, adopting integrated treatment systems in developing countries might face operational challenges and monitoring nitrate, helminth egg, and heavy metals would help provide timely operational feedback. Dams and artificial reservoirs can significantly alter the dynamics of sediment transport in a watercourse. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to assess the influence of the Pandeiros Small Hydroelectric Plant reservoir on sediment transport in the Pandeiros River. The study also aims to characterize the sediment composition and assess the correlation between total and suspended solids with turbidity, flow, and precipitation variables. The study was carried out in the Pandeiros River basin, Brazil, between May 2019 and January 2023. The following variables were analyzed: flow, turbidity, precipitation, total solids (fixed and volatile), and suspended solids (fixed and volatile). The results showed that, under the conditions observed during the study, the reservoir did not affect the concentration and composition of the sediments. It was found that the solids transported by the Pandeiros River are mostly composed of inorganic material. A positive correlation was observed between the variables, which was stronger when correlated with suspended solids. The correlation analysis indicated that precipitation is one of the main factors related to sediment transport in the Pandeiros River. In conclusion, the reservoir did not significantly affect the sediment concentration in the Pandeiros River. The effects of cyclical feeding restriction (3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 days of feeding per week) on the performance of juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in a biofloc technology system (BFT) were evaluated in this study for 77 days. Fifteen experimental units (400L) with temperature control (mean 28.2 °C) randomly distributed 1500 fish (0.42 ± 0.02 g). Fish were fed commercial feed (46.7 g of crude protein and 4475.5 kcal kg−1 of gross energy) up to satiation. Feeding cycles with different restrictions (p < 0.05) influenced animal growth but not survival and final density (p > 0.05), which remained around 94% and 235 fish.m−3, respectively. Juveniles fed 6 days a week showed 1.25 of feeding efficiency, while animals fed 3 days a week (more restricted) showed hyperphagia but did not exhibit compensatory growth. Changes in the morphology of hepatocytes (presence of vacuoles, displacement of the nucleus to the periphery, and fatty degeneration) were observed with an increase in feeding days, and a high degree of hepatic steatosis (p < 0.05). Water quality parameters remained within acceptable limits for the species and system operation. Feeding regimes influenced the characteristics of bioflocs (total suspended solids and porosity) and the abundance of microorganisms (p < 0.05). Nutritionally, less restricted diets (6 and 7 days of feeding per week) produced more protein (38.3 and 40.6% CP) and energy bioflocs (2252.8 and 2313 kcal.kg−1) (p < 0.05), while protein, lipid, and body energy were significantly lower (p < 0.05) with the more restricted diet. The composition of microorganisms was influenced by the feeding regimes (p < 0.05). Results demonstrated that the occurrence of total compensatory growth (6 days of feeding per week) represents an economic advantage with a reduction of 26.8% of feed and greater profitability in the unitary commercialization of tilapia juveniles. Tannery effluents contain high amounts of polluting chemicals, such as salts and heavy metals released often to surface waters. New economic and eco-friendly purification methods are needed. Two adsorbing materials and five salt-tolerant fungal isolates from mangrove habitat were studied. Purification experiments were carried out using the pollutant adsorbents biochar and the biomass of vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) roots and the fungi Cladosporium cladosporioides, Phomopsis glabrae, Aspergillus niger, Emericellopsis sp., and Scopulariopsis sp., which were isolated from mangrove sediment. They efficacy to reduce pollutants was studied in different combinations. Salinity, turbidity, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, phenols, nitrogen, ammonia. Biological and chemical oxygen demand (BOD, COD) and several heavy metals were measured. The adsorbents were efficient reducing the pollutants to 15–50% of the original. The efficiency of the combination of biochar and roots was generally at the same level as the adsorbents alone. Some pollutants such as turbidity, COD and ammonium were reduced slightly more by the combination than the adsorbents alone. From all 14 treatments, Emericellopsis sp. with biochar and roots appeared to be the most efficient reducing pollutants to < 10–30%. BOD and COD were reduced to ca 5% of the original. The treatment was efficient in reducing also heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Mn Pb, Zn). The fungal species originating from the environment instead of the strains present in the tannery effluent reduced pollutants remarkably and the adsorbents improved the reduction efficiency. This study presents the synthesis and application of MgO@SnO2 nanocomposite (NC), surface-modified with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), to address heavy metal removal and hydrocarbon degradation in petroleum wastewater. The nanocomposites were eco-friendly produced using Pistacia lentiscus leaf extract and underwent thorough characterization through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV–visible spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses, confirming their successful synthesis and modification. Adsorption studies evaluated the nanocomposites' efficiency in eliminating 11 heavy metals from petroleum wastewater. Results revealed impressive adsorption capacities, achieving complete Cr, Mo, and Sb removal within 20 min and nearly 99% removal of all tested metals within 30 min. Additionally, MgO@SnO2@PVP NC exhibited exceptional photocatalytic activity under sunlight irradiation, leading to an 88% hydrocarbon degradation and an 85% reduction in total suspended solids (TSS) in oily industrial water (OIW) after 30 min, outperforming MgO@SnO2 NC. The reaction kinetics followed a pseudo-first-order model, with rate constant (k) values of 0.041 and 0.090 min−1 for OIW and TSS, respectively. Furthermore, the nanocomposites showed excellent recyclability over five cycles. First-principles calculations confirmed robust adsorption between the nanocomposites and heavy metal ions, validating their binding efficacy. This study aimed to derive major pollutants for standard watersheds with relatively high pollution levels and identify their trends. Hence, the water quality index (WQI) and multivariate statistical techniques were used to analyze the water quality evaluation of standard watershed during the total maximum daily load (TMDL) policy period implemented since 2004. The WQI was calculated for 41 standard watersheds, divided into 14 main streams and 27 tributaries. Consequently, in the main stream, WQI decreased as it moved downstream after the MS5 site. In the tributary, WQI values were found to be low at TS11, TS15, TS16, and TS17 sites. However, the Mann–Kendall test results indicated that the overall WQI value was increasing, suggesting that the water quality of the study basin was improving as the TMDL policy phase progressed. Principal component analysis of the group with relatively low WQI among the standard watersheds revealed that water temperature, dissolved oxygen, total phosphorus, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, and electrical conductivity were the main variables in the main stream cluster. In the tributary stream cluster, total phosphorus, dissolved oxygen, total suspended solids, total nitrogen, and electrical conductivity showed high loading values. This study proposed a series of methods to provide the basic data required for watershed management through detailed water quality assessment methods, statistical techniques for deriving major pollutants, and trend analysis of water quality evaluation. Total suspended solids (TSS) are a major contributor of anthropogenic impacts to aquatic systems. TSS exposure have been shown to affect the function of gills, but the mode of action is unclear. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is emerging as an excellent model for mechanistic toxicology, and as there are no baseline studies on TSS effects in zebrafish gills, we tested the hypothesis that environmental concentrations of TSS damages gill structure and function in this species. Adult zebrafish were exposed to either 0, 10, 100, 500, 1000, or 2000 mg/L TSS for 4 days to assess the gill morphology. The minimal concentration that affected the gill structure was further tested for the distribution of key ion transporters, including Na+/K+- ATPase (NKA) and vacuolar-type H+-ATPase (VHA), using confocal microscopy. Our results reveal that TSS concentration as low as 100 mg/L alters the morphology of gills, including greater filament thickness, lamellae thickness, and epithelial lifting. This was also associated with a reduction in NKA immunoreactive (IR) cell count and intensity in the 100 mg/L TSS group, while there was neither a change in the VHA-IR cell count or expression nor the transcript abundance of atp6v1a and atp1a1a4 in the gills. Markers of stress response in these animals, including levels of cortisol, glucose, lactate, and glycogen were not altered after 4 days of TSS exposure. Overall, environmentally relevant concentrations of TSS can damage the gill structure and function in zebrafish and has the potential to enhance the toxicity of contaminants acting via the gills. Urbanization and industrialization in this modern time actually cause less availability of daily based water. In searching of a preferable solution to overcome this critical problem, waste water treatment seems to be considered as a much valuable option for reusing water. For this, sewage water treatment plants (STPs) are widely used. But this solution is actually ironical, as STP treatment causes hazardous damage to the environment in treating waste water. This system needs lots of harmful chemicals, high energy, and high build-up to operate the process. But a newly considered technology has come to counteract all these problems of STPs and the method is 'Vermifiltration'. In this technique, earthworms are used to treat waste water. Earthworm's body acts as biofilter and it can reduce higher percentage of BOD, COD, TSS from the waste water compared to the STPs. Earthworms eat up the sewage, making them treated, neutralized, and non-harmful and finally excrete them with several useful microorganisms. The symbiotic activity between earthworms and microorganisms works to filter the waste water. This method is completely odour less and harmless. No sludge is formed. With having all these characteristics, vermifiltration becomes much better option for the environment. In this review, the method of vermifiltration, its limiting factors, utilization and future developments are properly discussed. Anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) was one of the directions of sludge treatment, but how to effectively improve the production of methane as a resource product of anaerobic digestion of sludge still needs further research. The study examined how the combination of potassium ferrate (PF) and thermal hydrolysis (TH) pretreatment affected methane production from sludge. The results demonstrated a positive synergistic effect on methane production with PF-TH pretreatment. Specifically, by employing a 0.05 g/g TSS (total suspended solids) PF in conjunction with TH at 80 °C for 30 min, the methane yield increased from 170.66 ± 0.92 to 232.73 ± 2.21 mL/g VSS (volatile suspended solids). The co-pretreatment of PF and TH has been substantiated by mechanism studies to effectively enhance the disintegration and biodegradability of sludge. Additionally, the variation of microbial community revealed an enrichment of active microorganisms associated with anaerobic digestion after treated with PF + TH, resulting in a total abundance increase from 11.87 to 20.45% in the PF + TH group. Efficient catalysts play a pivotal role in advancing eco-friendly water treatment strategies, particularly in the removal of diverse organic contaminants found in water-petroleum sources. This study addresses the multifaceted challenges posed by contaminants, encompassing a spectrum of heavy metals such as As, Cd, Cr, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, and Zn alongside pollutants like oily water (OIW), total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dyes, and pharmaceuticals, posing threats to both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Herein, we present the synthesis of biogenically derived Mn@NiO nanocomposite (NC) photocatalysts, a sustainable methodology employing an aqueous Rosmarinus officinalis L. extract, yielding particles with a size of 36.7 nm. The catalyst demonstrates exceptional efficacy in removing heavy metals, achieving rates exceeding 99–100% within 30 min, alongside notable removal efficiencies for OIW (98%), TSS (87%), and COD (98%). Furthermore, our photodegradation experiments showed remarkable efficiencies, with 94% degradation for Rose Bengal (RB) and 96% for methylene blue (MB) within 120 min. The degradation kinetics adhere to pseudo-first-order behavior, with rate constants of 0.0227 min−1 for RB and 0.0370 min−1 for MB. Additionally, the NC exhibits significant antibiotic degradation rates of 97% for cephalexin (CEX) and 96% for amoxicillin (AMOX). The enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the synergistic interplay between the Mn and NiO nanostructures, augmenting responsiveness to sunlight while mitigating electron-hole pair recombination. Rudrasagar Lake, a vital habitat for diverse flora and fauna, supports over 2000 households to sustain their daily livelihoods. The current study attempts to examine the impact of human activities on spatio-temporal variation in the water quality of the study area. The study integrates extensive field surveys, sample processing, and statistical analysis to assess the recent status of wetland health. Latin Square Matrix (LSM) was employed to select the sampling sites while the Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) interpolation technique was used for spatial variation mapping. Modified Weighted Arithmetic Water Quality Index (MWAWQI) and Comprehensive Pollution Index (CPI) were utilized for assessing seasonal variation water quality and pollution loads, respectively. The results showed that dissolved oxygen (DO) was strongly influenced by the tributaries, and recreational activities have substantially influenced the highest concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and total suspended solids (TSS). The central portion of the lake is particularly susceptible to pollution from extensive fishing and recreational activities while peripheral sites are strongly influenced by agricultural run-offs, seepages from brick industries, and municipal wastes characterized by high concentrations of pH, total hardness (TH), oxidation–reduction potential (ORP). The findings reveal remarkable spatio-temporal fluctuations and highlight the areas within the lake susceptible to anthropogenic activities. The study proposed a sustainable management model to ameliorate anthropogenic threats. The obsolete efficiencies in conventional centralized wastewater treatment systems call for implementation of source separation and treatment of wastewater. Approximately 60–75% of domestic wastewater is attributed to greywater, which could be reused to combat freshwater crisis. The present study investigates qualitative and quantitative attributes of greywater from different sources in High-Income Countries (HICs) and Low-Income Countries (LICs). The quantity of greywater generation is positively correlated with country's per capita income, but feebly negatively correlated with temperature. Kitchen source is the highest contributor of total suspended solids (134–1300 mg/l), whereas in case of turbidity, laundry is the major contributor (39–444 NTU). Also, kitchen greywater is characterized by comparatively high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of 100–1850 mg/l, low pH of 5.6–8, and elevated total nitrogen (TN) of about 1.5–48 mg/l. The high pH (7.3–10) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels (58–2497 mg/l) in laundry greywater are due to usage of sodium hydroxide-based soaps, while usage of wash detergents containing phosphates like sodium tripolyphosphate contribute to high total phosphorus (TP) (0.062–57 mg/l). The qualitative characteristics of greywater in HICs are perceived to be superior compared to LICs. Furthermore, the most widely used physicochemical, biological, and advanced oxidation treatment technologies for greywater are outlined briefly. It can be observed that economical treatment systems like phytoremediation or biological technologies combined with sand filtration systems can be implemented to treat greywater with high organic content in LICs, whereas in HICs where greywater is generated in large quantities, electro-coagulation combined with advanced oxidation technologies can be used to treat its higher COD levels. The present study was conducted to evaluate the bioflocculant chitosan and its nano-conjugated form in biofloc production and to evaluate the growth performance of genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT) in an insitu biofloc system. A completely randomised design (CRD) was used to evaluate the growth performance of GIFT in insitu biofloc over a 75-day period. The trial was conducted with biofloc control (T1), 30 ppm chitosan (T2) and 30 ppm nano-chitosan (T3) in triplicate. The water quality parameters were maintained in the optimum range for biofloc production. The highest value for flocculation activity, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids and total solids other than floc volume was observed in T3 followed by T2 and T1. The result of this study showed that there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) between treatments in terms of specific growth rate (SGR), weight gain (%WG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed efficiency ratio (FER) and daily increment (DI). Good growth performance of fish was observed in biofloc produced with nano-chitosan in terms of average body weight (g) (24.74 ± 2.58), SGR (%/day) (3.56 ± 0.094), PWG (%) (1546.27 ± 143.42), lowest FCR (1.421 ± 0.029), FER (0.62 ± 0.011), PER (1.68 ± 0.03) and DI (g day−1) (0.21 ± 0.014). The highest levels of amylase, lipase and protease activity and increased activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT) were found in the T3 treatment compared to T2 and T1 treatments. This study demonstrated that biofloc developed with 30 ppm nano-chitosan could shorten the production time of biofloc, maintain the water quality of the biofloc system and improve the growth of GIFT tilapia reared in an insitu biofloc system with inland saline groundwater. Strategies, such as the biological denitrification process, must be adopted to treat rich-nitrate water from biofloc systems, making it suitable for culture or proper disposal. This study evaluated the effect of water reuse from a BFT system after being subjected to a biological anaerobic denitrification process on shrimp performance and water quality in the rearing of Litopenaeus vannamei. A 63-day experiment was carried out at the Marine Station of Aquaculture of the Federal University of Rio Grande. L. vannamei juveniles (1.30 ± 0.48 g) were stocked in 150-L tanks at a density of 500 shrimp/m3. Four treatments (with three replicas each) were tested: natural seawater and denitrified seawater, both with and without biofloc inoculum. Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, alkalinity, and total suspended solids (TSS) in the water were monitored. Ammonia and nitrite levels were higher without biofloc inoculum, while nitrate levels increased with inoculum use. Alkalinity and TSS were significantly higher in denitrified water with inoculum, driven mainly by the initial higher concentrations. A 100% mortality was found in the treatment using denitrified water without inoculum, probably due to the presence of byproducts after the denitrification process, but no differences in survival (>89%) were found in the other treatments. The biofloc inoculum helped with higher productivity (3.03 ± 0.08 kg/m3) and lower FCR (1.48 ± 0.05) in the treatment using seawater compared to the treatment in which no inoculum was used (2.62 ± 0.18 kg/m3 and 1.79 ± 0.16), in addition to serving as a biological treatment in denitrified seawater, readjusting the water for shrimp farming. As the growth performance of shrimp raised in denitrified water showed no differences compared to natural seawater, utilizing denitrified seawater from a biofloc system seems feasible for shrimp cultivation. This paper aims to study dark fermentation (DF) in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor during 20 cycles operating at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 3, 9, and 12 h using substrate wastewater from the food industry and granular inoculum sludge from a treatment plant as codigestion to explore the relationship between substrates, metabolites, and microorganisms to increase the biohydrogen (BioH2) yield. Operation conditions were constant pH 5.50 ± 0.50, T = 35 °C and a carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 30. It is noteworthy that DF with HRT = 9 h obtained the highest yields of organic matter degradation, and BioH2 in biogas (~60%) was attributed to the adjustment of pH and the codigestion buffer capacity. During DF with HRT = 9, the reactor was 11 times more productive with regards to HRT = 3 h, resulting in its performance with a better yield mean (6.22 mmol H2 g COD−1) and productivity (0.35 LH2 L−1 d) than other HRTs with lower records of 0.42 mmol H2 g COD−1 and 0.05 LH2 L−1 d, respectively. The high abundance of native populations (Lactobacillus and Lactococcus) and intrinsic inoculum (Citrobacter) led to the highest BioH2 production. Most of the production of acetic acid ~590 mg L−1 and butyric acid ~450 mg L−1 confirmed that BioH2 is mainly produced by acetic and butyric metabolic routes, and a direct relation with the percentage of retention of total suspended solids was also found, supporting the biodegradation capacity of the process. With rapid urbanization sweeping through emerging nations, such as India, there has been a substantial increase in wastewater production, which poses a significant challenge in terms of its treatment and sustainable use. Conventional wastewater treatment methods, including the moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR), up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB), membrane bioreactor (MBR), activated sludge process (ASP), sequencing batch reactors (SBR), and others, have demonstrated their effectiveness but come at a considerable cost. As these systems age, their operational and maintenance expenses escalate, rendering them less practical and sustainable. Despite the establishment of numerous wastewater treatment plants aimed at adhering to the regulations set forth by the Central Pollution Control Board of India (CPCB), high operating and maintenance costs have resulted in the abandonment of many of these facilities. There is a persistent need for sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly wastewater management technology to address this pressing issue. A solid immobilised biofilter (SIBF) system is currently under research as a potential solution because of its natural, cost-efficient, and sustainable characteristics. This study engages in a compelling comparative case study of two hospitals in Maharashtra, India. This contrasts the conventional wastewater treatment method (MBBR) with the natural treatment approach (SIBF). This study utilizes a 30-year life cycle cost analysis approach, which distinctly reveals that the MBBR system carries a higher life cycle cost. In contrast, the SIBF system has significantly lower costs because of its reduced energy consumption and operational costs. Four laboratory tests, namely biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, and pH, were used to evaluate the quality of the treated wastewater. Major precipitation events from destructive hurricanes can change the hydrodynamics of estuaries. Indeed, water rather than wind was the major destructive force behind Hurricane Harvey, the category 4 storm that stalled over Texas in August 2017. Herein, we present a unique examination of the phytoplankton community as it responded to the changing hydrodynamic conditions in Galveston Bay. We used traditional (primary productivity, pigments, Fluorescence Induction and Relaxation System, pulse-amplitude modulation fluorometer), and modern (Imagining FlowCytobot [IFCB], 16S rRNA, and 18S rRNA gene sequencing) approaches to characterize the phytoplankton community and their physiological response. Phytoplankton communities transitioned from pre-storm estuarine to freshwater species and then began to transition back to an estuarine community with similar but not identical structure to that present before the storm. Further, phytoplankton communities were initially displaced by the flood waters, which lowered biomass and productivity despite the high nutrient concentrations and dissolved inorganic nitrogen to phosphate ratios of ~ 16. We found for cyanobacteria, factors such as time (i.e., sampling event after the storm), temperature (°C), salinity, NH4+ (µM), NO3− (µM), and turbidity (Secchi disk depths and total suspended solids) were the most critical environmental factors that explained the variation in community composition relative to the major eukaryotic groups. Only factors such as time, followed by salinity, and NO3− played a crucial role for eukaryotes, with time having the most impact on diatoms. The results herein provide a greater understanding of the succession and natural variability of phytoplankton species following large flood events in subtropical estuaries, which are predicted to occur more frequently with increasing effects of climate change. Spirulina is extensively studied among cyanobacteria. It has been used as a source of protein since ancient times. The present investigation addressed the cultivation of Spirulina in kitchen wastewater with the aim of water remediation. Water quality parameters were evaluated by analysing physicochemical parameters both before and after the growth of Spirulina. The microscopic inspection revealed the presence of Spirulina exhibiting spiral and helical shapes. Water quality parameters, including total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, chlorides, sulfates, phosphate, total hardness, and total alkalinity, were found to be high in the wastewater before the cultivation of Spirulina. In addition, it had very acidic conditions with a pH range of 4.5 to 6.0. The cultivation of Spirulina resulted in favourable changes in various chemical parameters. Specifically, the total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, chlorides, sulfates, phosphate, total hardness, and total alkalinity decreased while the sodium level increased. Further, it increased the pH level to the neutral range. According to the findings of this study, it can be inferred that cultivating Spirulina in wastewater positively altered the physicochemical characteristics of the wastewater and resulted in an increased yield of Spirulina. The invasive red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852) can affect freshwater ecosystems, their macrophyte communities in various ways. To examine the effects of red swamp crayfish on clearwater macrophyte-dominated lakes, we performed a 28-day mesocosm experiment, without and with presence of red swamp crayfish, with or without access to sediments using netting. All in the presence of one of the following three different submerged macrophytes: Myriophyllum spicatum L., Vallisneria denseserrulata (Makino) Makino, or Hydrilla verticillate (L.f.) Royle. This experimental design allowed a partial separation of the effects of disturbing the sediment using netting from other factors such as excretion and direct harm of the plants. Nutrients and total suspended solids concentrations were lower in the crayfish-with-net than in the crayfish-without-net treatments but had similar concentrations in the crayfish-with-net and crayfishless-without-net treatments. Compared to the crayfish-with-net treatment, there were more broken leaves in the crayfish-without-net treatments for V. denseserrulata and H. verticillata, while no difference was found for M. spicatum, likely reflecting their different growth forms. Our results suggest that the sediment disturbance by the crayfish was more important than their plant handling/consumption and nutrient excretion for an observed water quality change from clear to turbid. Industrialization and the ever-increasing world population have diminished high-quality water resources for sustainable agriculture. It is imperative to effectively treat industrial effluent to render the treated water available for crop cultivation. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of textile effluent treated with Trametes pubescens MB 89 in supporting maize cultivation. The fungal treatment reduced the amounts of Co, Pb and As in the textile effluent. The biological oxygen demand, total dissolved solids and total suspended solids were within the permissible limits in the treated effluent. The data indicated that the irrigation of maize with fungal-treated textile effluent improved the growth parameters of the plant including root, shoot length, leaf area and chlorophyll content. Moreover, better antioxidant activity, total phenol content and protein content in roots, stems and leaves of maize plants were obtained. Photosynthetic parameters (potential quantum yield, electron transport rate and fluorescence yield of non-photochemical losses other than heat) were also improved in the plants irrigated with treated effluent as compared to the control groups. In conclusion, the treatment of textile effluent with the immobilized T. pubescens presents a sustainable solution to minimize chemical pollution and effectively utilize water resources. Exposed soils associated with active construction sites provide opportunities for erosion and sediment transport during storm events, introducing risks associated with excess sediment to downstream infrastructure and aquatic biota. A better understanding of the drivers of sediment transport in construction site runoff is needed to improve the design and performance of erosion and sediment control measures (ESCMs). Eleven monitoring locations on 3 active road construction sites in central Ohio were established to characterize runoff quality from points of concentrated flow during storm events. Grab samples were analyzed for total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, and particle size distribution (PSD). Median TSS concentrations and turbidity levels across all samples were 626 mg/L (range 25–28,600 mg/L) and 759 NTU (range 22–33,000 NTU), respectively. The median PSD corresponded to a silty clay loam, mirroring the soil texture of much of Ohio's subsoils. TSS concentrations and turbidity were significantly positively correlated with the rainfall intensity 10 min prior to sample collection, suggesting that higher flow rates created greater shear stress on bare soil which resulted in more erosion. Conversely, rainfall duration was negatively correlated with particle size, indicating that prolonged moisture from rainfall promoted the dispersion of soil aggregates which mobilized smaller particles. Multivariable linear regression models revealed that higher rainfall intensities corresponded to higher turbidity values, while higher TSS concentrations were associated with higher rainfall intensities, depths, and durations. Results from this study highlight the importance of reducing raindrop impact and subsequent shear stress applied by concentrated flows through the use of ESCMs to limit sediment export from construction sites. Comprehensive and proper management of fecal sludge (FS) is an ongoing concern in many nations. Decentralized fecal sludge treatment plants (FSTPs) are effective in this regard; however, many have experienced strong public opposition based partly on suspicion of malodor. Fecal sludge and freshly generated fecal matter (FM) samples from various FSTPs were collected, characterized, and investigated for biomethane potential. The homogenized samples were anaerobically digested for 28 days. Digestion successfully reduced total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, and threshold odor number values of 97,350–97,420 mg/l, 43,230–43,260 mg/l, and 130–150 for FM, to 49,500–49,650 mg/l, 23,760–23,850 mg/l, and 3338, respectively, for FS samples. The comprehensive gas yield from Bhongir, Boduppal, and Shadnagar FS samples was 40, 55, and 31 ml, respectively. In contrast, cumulative gas generation from the FM was 26,361 ml. Digestion of FS samples also reduced concentrations of volatile solids and coliforms by 66–72% and 99%, respectively. Characterization of gas samples revealed methane and carbon dioxide concentrations as 56% and 22% for FM, and 0.4% and 61% for FS samples, respectively. Clean water is essential for drinking, household use, and agriculture. Researchers studied 39 sites near Tamla nala and Nunia nala channels in Durgapur and Asansol City (West Bengal) to assess the deterioration level of water due to industrial discharge. During the first phase out of three, the researchers conducted a spatial representation of various physicochemical parameters, such as temperature, pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Total Hardness (TH), Electrical Conductivity (EC), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), significant anions such as chloride (Cl−), nitrate (NO3−), phosphate (PO4−3), sulfate (SO42−), cyanide (CN−1) and fluoride (F−), as well as heavy metals/metalloids such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As). As observed the parameters at various sites along the stream exceeded threshold limits majorly due to industrial discharge: highest pH, TDS, TH, EC, Cl−, SO42− at site 26; Fe at site 1, TSS, COD, CN− at site 33, 31, 2 respectively; Cd, Ni, Cu at site 19; Hg and Pb at site 3 and As at site 20. Contaminated areas were marked in red and secure areas in green. Additionally, the HMPI (Heavy metal pollution index) was estimated for eight locations to understand the impact of heavy metal pollution in the second phase of the study. An extremely high HMPI indicates heightened toxicity and health risks for both residents and outsiders. The Canadian Water Quality Index (1.0) was calculated for eight sites in the third phase based on seventeen parameters. The resulting WQI value was below 44, indicating poor water quality at the sites. Due to the poor quality and critical heavy metal toxicity, the authors recommended continuous monitoring, strict regulation enforcement, increased treatment capacity, Zero Liquid Discharge implementation, and raising awareness among residents. An electrocoagulation treatment is implemented to eliminate the potential waste hazards derived from excessive amounts of total dissolved solids (TDS) and total suspended solids (TSS) prior to its disposal. The overall objective is to concurrently maximize the removal of TDS and TSS of the wastewater and minimize the total energy cost in the electrochemical process. A fuzzy optimization method is utilized to address this problem. This enables the integration of the two objectives to properly identify the satisfying solution and to determine the optimum variable conditions in terms of the reaction time (10–40 min) and applied current (0.5–2.0 A). This research work aims to develop an optimization model for the electrochemical treatment of oily wastewater. The model incorporates empirical equations to quantify the variables of the removal efficiencies. Additionally, the model considers the total costs associated with energy consumption and addresses the cumulative uncertainty of experimental runs. The ε-constraint method is employed to identify the Pareto front. A fuzzy optimization approach is employed to enable the simultaneous optimization of multiple objectives. By integrating these variables, the research seeks to improve the efficiency and cost of TDS and TSS removal in the electrochemical treatment process. The optimum solution achieved the reaction time and applied current of 40 min and 1.97 A, respectively. The study aims to analyze the effectiveness of wastewater treatment by using Carica papaya seeds as bio coagulants to diminish total suspended solids (TSS) and excess phosphate. This method has some advantages because it does not use chemical materials, is simple to apply, and is safe for the environment and human health. The wastewater samples were taken from an active laundry site in Palembang City, South Sumatra Province of Indonesia. The study found that the best dosage of coagulant was 3 g for the wastewater samples. The pH and BOD parameters showed slight changes after treatment, with pH 7.63–7.19 and 33–27 mg/L values, respectively. The TSS removal efficiency ranged from 9.3 to 15.6%, while the COD and phosphate removals were obtained from 11.7 to 39.3% and 56.3 to 68.4%, respectively. The treated TSS, COD, and phosphate concentrations have met the Indonesian domestic wastewater quality standard and environmental protection organization (EPO) guidelines. In addition, the statistical analysis and t-test showed significant differences (p < 0.05) for before and after treatment data of all parameters. The ANOVA test showed significant differences (p < 0.05) for all parameters among the three treatments. Groundwater is the primary source of water in Ondo state, Nigeria, the study area for the research. However, there has been a rising concern in recent times with regard to the contamination of this important water source as a result of urbanization. This study quantified 13 physicochemical parameters (Turbidity, Conductivity, pH, Mg2+ Hardness, Ca2+ Hardness, Total hardness, Alkalinity, Chloride, Nitrate, Sulphate, Phosphate, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS)) in ten groundwater samples collected from dug wells in urban and rural study areas and compared them with the WHO drinking water standards. The comparison reveals that 30.8% of the parameters had levels above the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard limits in the study areas, while 69.2% were within the recommended limits. Water Quality Index (WQI) computations were also carried out which revealed that 60% of samples from the urban study area were of good quality and 40% were poor, while in the rural, 80% of the samples were good and the remaining 20% were poor. Based on the statistical and WQI results, groundwater in the urban study area is generally of lower quality than that of the rural. Possible factors influencing this include surface sealing, seepage of domestic and industrial effluents into aquifers and over-exploitation of groundwater, which characterize urbanized areas. The study thus recommends regular monitoring of groundwater quality, integration of effective systems for safe sewage disposal and strategic city planning of urbanized zones to maximize runoffs for groundwater recharge to improve groundwater quality. The present study investigated the integration of halophytes in IMTA as extractive species on the water quality, growth, digestive, and antioxidant activity of Penaeus monodon and Chanos chanos in earthen ponds for 120 days. The experimental setup consisted of three treatments: control (C) and two different halophyte-based IMTA treatments, T1 and T2, randomly assigned to nine earthen ponds (200 m−2) in three replicates. All treatments were uniformly stocked with P. monodon (Post larve 12) and C. chanos (13.4–14 g); in addition to these, T1 had Avicennia officinalis and Meretrix casta and T2 had Bruguiera gymnorhiza and Meretrix casta as extractive species. The average final body weights of P. monodon (32.01 ± 0.27 g) and C. chanos (94.18 ± 1 g) were found in the A. officinalis based IMTA treatment (T1). T1 also had shown a significant (p < 0.05) reductions in total ammonia nitrogen (97.5%), nitrite-N (NO2-N) (56.1%), and nitrate (NO3-N) (41.1%). Biological oxygen demand (BOD) (3.17 ± 0.15 ppm), chemical oxygen demand (COD) (25 ± 0.58 mg L−1), and total suspended solids (TSS) (20 ± 1.15 mg L−1) were significantly (P < 0.05) lower in T1. Digestive enzyme activity in shrimp and fish was higher in T1 and T2. A decrease in catalase and SOD enzyme activities was observed in T1 and T2. Halophyte-and M. casta-based IMTA treatments (T1 and T2) showed a decrease in the total Vibrio and heterotrophic bacterial counts. The present research findings elucidated that halophytes as extractive species can be beneficial in brackishwater IMTA systems to maintain water quality, improve the health status of cultivated organisms, and increase aquaculture productivity. Ecosystem processes in rivers are thought to be controlled more by extrinsic than intrinsic factors, that is, the result of processes that occur upstream or within their watersheds. However, large floodplain rivers have a diverse assemblage of aquatic areas spanning gradients of connectivity with the main channel and internal controls may at times regulate long-term dynamics. When and where internal controls are important has not been widely explored in rivers. The Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) provides a unique opportunity to assess regulation of ecosystem processes in a large floodplain river as water clarity has increased in several reaches over the last two decades. To better understand when and where intrinsic variables (for example, aquatic vegetation and common carp) and extrinsic variables (for example, upstream main channel total suspended solids (TSS) concentration and discharge) regulate water clarity, we describe 24-year trends of TSS in six study reaches of the UMRS. We evaluated the degree to which trends were shared across aquatic areas within each study reach and identified potential drivers of long-term TSS dynamics. Results varied across and within UMRS reaches, but common carp abundance was the strongest predictor in nearly all study reaches. Several models indicated associations with both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, and the marginal model r2 values (0.26–0.61) suggest that additional environmental factors may have influenced water clarity. Nile tilapia [Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758)] is a widespread invasive fish, now present in lakes, rivers, and reservoirs around the world, and its dominance has led to serious ecological problems in many freshwater systems. However, little is known about its effect on macrophyte-dominated lake ecosystems. We conducted a 10-week mesocosm experiment to test the impact of tilapia on phytoplankton and water quality in model ecosystems with submerged macrophytes [Vallisneria natans (Lour.) Hara] and the presence and absence of tilapia. Tilapia led to an increase in concentrations of total phosphorus, total nitrogen, total dissolved nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, and total suspended solids and had negative impact on submerged macrophyte and light intensity, thus causing an overall deterioration in water quality. Tilapia increased the abundance of rotifers and changed the zooplankton community structure. Tilapia increased the total biomass of phytoplankton but the effect depended on the phytoplankton size, i.e., the overall proportion of micro-phytoplankton increased, while that of pico-phytoplankton decreased. Thus, tilapia also caused changes in the phytoplankton community structure.
