Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia (TRS) represents a main clinical issue, associated with worse psychopathological outcomes, a more disrupted neurobiological substrate, and poorer neurocognitive performance across several domains, especially in verbal abilities. If cognitive impairment is a major determinant of patients' functional outcomes and quality of life, targeting cognitive dysfunction becomes even more crucial in TRS patients in order to minimize cognitive and functional deterioration. However, although Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) represents the best available tool to treat cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia, specific evidence of its efficacy in TRS is lacking. Based on these premises, our study aimed at investigating possible differences in CRT outcomes in a sample of 150 patients with schizophrenia, stratified according to antipsychotic response (TRS vs. non-TRS). Subjects were assessed for neurocognition through Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS) and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) at baseline and after CRT. As expected, we observed greater baseline impairment among TRS patients in BACS-Verbal Memory and WCST-Executive Functions. Repeated measures ANCOVAs showed significant within-group pre-/post-CRT differences in the above-mentioned domains, both among non-TRS and TRS subjects. However, after CRT, no differences were observed between groups. This is the first study to indicate that CRT represents a highly valuable resource for TRS patients, since it may be able to fill the cognitive gap between treatment response groups. Our finding further highlights the importance of early implementation of CRT in addition to pharmacotherapy to reduce the cognitive and functional burden associated with the disease, especially for TRS patients. While Free and Open Source (F/OSS) coding has traditionally been described as a separate commons linked to values of openness and sharing, recent research suggests an increasing integration of private corporations into F/OSS practices, blurring the boundaries between F/OSS and commodified coding. However, there is a dearth of empirical, and especially quantitative studies exploring this phenomenon. To address this gap, we model the power dynamics and infrastructural aspects of software production within GitHub, a central hub for F/OSS development, using a large-scale, directed network. Using various network statistics, we detect the ecosystem's most impactful actors and find a nuanced picture of the influence of individuals, open source organizations, and private corporations in F/OSS practices. We find that the majority of public repositories on GitHub depend on a small core of specialized repositories and users. In accordance with expectations, individuals and open source organizations are more prevalent in this core of elite GitHub users, however, we also find a significant amount of private organizations with an indirect, yet consistent influence within GitHub. In addition, we find that directly influential individuals tend to facilitate sponsorship methods more often than indirectly or non-influential individuals. Our research highlights a hybridization of F/OSS and sheds light on the complex interplay between influence, power, and code production in the multi-language dependency ecosystem of GitHub. Introduction: Management of cystic fibrosis has recently stepped forward with the introduction of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators, although data on potential adverse effects are lacking for many categories of patients, such as pregnant women. Methods: We report one of the first reports on the outcome of pregnancy in a woman treated with Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor during the second and third trimester of pregnancy, showing a significant improvement of respiratory status, compared with the first trimester when the medication was discontinued due to unknown and, therefore, potential teratogenic effects. Also, we performed the review of the existing literature on the topic. Results: The course of pregnancy was uneventful, with reference to major obstetric complications, and the patient delivered a healthy neonate. These results were similar to those coming from other short series of pregnant women affected by cystic fibrosis and treated with CFTR modulators during pregnancy. Conclusions: Thus, despite the lack of evidence on the topic, the use of Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor in pregnancy seems to be apparently not associated with major adverse events, thus opening optimistic scenarios in terms of management of these patients. Schizophrenia is a chronic psychotic disease burdened by cognitive deficits which hamper daily functioning causing disability and costs for society. Biological determinants underlying cognitive impairment are only partially understood and there are no convincing pharmacological targets able to improve cognitive outcome. Mounting evidence has shown the involvement of the kynurenine pathway in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, also concerning cognitive symptoms. Therefore, the action of specific metabolites of kynurenine could affects cognition in schizophrenia. To evaluate the impact of the metabolites of kynurenine pathway on cognitive functions in schizophrenia spectrum disorders, with a focus on the modulating role of gender, to identify predictors of cognitive functioning and hypothetical pharmacological targets able to resize disability by improving cognition, thus functioning and quality of life. A systematic review was performed in PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. All studies measuring the direct impact of kynurenine metabolites on cognitive performances in living individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders were included in the review. Six studies were included. The activation of the kynurenine pathway resulted associated with greater cognitive deficits in patients with schizophrenia and both elevations and reduction of metabolites seemed able to affect cognitive outcome. No modulating role of sex emerged. This systematic review provides evidence that the activation of the kynurenine pathway affects cognition in patients with schizophrenia and highlights this pathway as a possible future target for developing novel drugs toward this still unmet clinical need. Background: Dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO) (i.e., impairment in muscle strength and high waist circumference) is gaining interest, as it is associated with several important adverse health outcomes. However, the association between DAO and multimorbidity is largely unclear. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the association between DAO at baseline and new onset multimorbidity over ten years of follow-up. Methods: People participating in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing were included. DAO was defined as waist circumference > 102 cm in men and > 88 cm in women, and a concomitant presence of dynapenia (handgrip strength defined as < 27 kg for men and < 16 kg for women). Multimorbidity was defined as having two or more chronic conditions. The association between DAO and incident multimorbidity was assessed using a multivariable logistic regression analysis, reporting the data as odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Overall, 3302 participants (mean age: 63.4 years, males: 50.3%) without multimorbidity at baseline were followed-up for ten years. After adjusting for several variables, compared to participants without dynapenia nor abdominal obesity, the presence of abdominal obesity (OR = 1.505; 95%CI: 1.272–1.780; p < 0.0001) and DAO (OR = 1.671; 95%CI: 1.201–2.325; p = 0.002) significantly increased the risk of multimorbidity. Compared to no dynapenia nor abdominal obesity, DAO was associated with significantly higher risk for arthritis and diabetes. Conclusions: DAO was significantly associated with a higher risk of incident multimorbidity, over 10 years of follow-up. We report here the discovery and structure-guided optimization of a novel series of AKT kinase inhibitors. Based on docking studies for the predicted active bound-conformation of 2, a potent series of N-substituted-5-(isoquinolin-6-yl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amines was developed. Compounds in the series achieve AKT pathway inhibition in cancer cells, as measured by inhibition of pathway proteins pGSK and pFKHR. Compound 12 was further evaluated in a single dose PK/PD in vivo study in tumor-bearing mice and demonstrated inhibition of phosphorylation of the direct substrate GSK and pathway biomarker S6. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes more and more pervasive in our everyday life, new questions arise about its ethical and social impacts. Such issues concern all stakeholders involved in or committed to the design, implementation, deployment, and use of the technology. The present document addresses these preoccupations by introducing and discussing a set of practical obligations and recommendations for the development of applications and systems based on AI techniques. With this work we hope to contribute to spreading awareness on the many social challenges posed by AI and encouraging the establishment of good practices throughout the relevant social areas. As points of novelty, the paper elaborates on an integrated view that combines both human rights and ethical concepts to reap the benefits of the two approaches. Moreover, it proposes innovative recommendations, such as those on redress and governance, which add further insight to the debate. Finally, it incorporates a specific focus on the Italian Constitution, thus offering an example of how core legislations of Member States might contribute to further specify and enrich the EU normative framework on AI. Big data and Machine learning Techniques are reshaping the way in which food safety risk assessment is conducted. The ongoing 'datafication' of food safety risk assessment activities and the progressive deployment of probabilistic models in their practices requires a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of these advances. In particular, the low level of trust in EU food safety risk assessment framework highlighted in 2019 by an EU-funded survey could be exacerbated by novel methods of analysis. The variety of processed data raises unique questions regarding the interplay of multiple regulatory systems alongside food safety legislation. Provisions aiming to preserve the confidentiality of data and protect personal information are juxtaposed to norms prescribing the public disclosure of scientific information. This research is intended to provide guidance for data governance and data ownership issues that unfold from the ongoing transformation of the technical and legal domains of food safety risk assessment. Following the reconstruction of technological advances in data collection and analysis and the description of recent amendments to food safety legislation, emerging concerns are discussed in light of the individual, collective and social implications of the deployment of cutting-edge Big Data collection and analysis techniques. Then, a set of principle-based recommendations is proposed by adapting high-level principles enshrined in institutional documents about Artificial Intelligence to the realm of food safety risk assessment. The proposed set of recommendations adopts Safety, Accountability, Fairness, Explainability, Transparency as core principles (SAFETY), whereas Privacy and data protection are used as a meta-principle. Trust in vaccines and in the institutions responsible for their management is a key asset in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic. By means of a structured multi-scales survey based on the socio-cognitive model of trust, this study investigates the interplay of institutional trust, confidence in COVID-19 vaccines, information habits, personal motivations, and background beliefs on the pandemic in determining willingness to vaccinate in a sample of Italian respondents (N = 4096). We observe substantial trust in public institutions and a strong vaccination intention. Theory-driven structural equation analysis revealed what factors act as important predictors of willingness to vaccinate: trust in vaccine manufacturers (which in turn is supported by trust in regulators), collectivist goals, self-perceived knowledgeability, reliance on traditional media for information gathering, and trust in institutional and scientific sources. In contrast, vaccine hesitancy, while confined to a minority, is more prominent in less educated and less affluent respondents. Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is recommended by the European Urology Association guidelines as the standard modality for imaging-guided biopsy. Recently positron emission tomography with prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA PET) has shown promising results as a tool for this purpose. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of positron emission tomography with prostate-specific membrane antigen/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) using the gallium-labeled prostate-specific membrane antigen (68Ga-PSMA-11) and multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) for pre-biopsy tumour localization and interreader agreement for visual and semiquantitative analysis. Semiquantitative parameters included apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and maximum lesion diameter for mpMRI and standardized uptake value (SUVmax) and PSMA-positive volume (PSMAvol) for PSMA PET/MRI. Results: Sensitivity and specificity were 61.4% and 92.9% for mpMRI and 66.7% and 92.9% for PSMA PET/MRI for reader one, respectively. RPE was available in 23 patients and 41 of 47 quadrants with discrepant findings. Based on RPE results, the specificity for both imaging modalities increased to 98% and 99%, and the sensitivity improved to 63.9% and 72.1% for mpMRI and PSMA PET/MRI, respectively. Both modalities yielded a substantial interreader agreement for primary tumour localization (mpMRI kappa = 0.65 (0.52–0.79), PSMA PET/MRI kappa = 0.73 (0.61–0.84)). ICC for SUVmax, PSMAvol and lesion diameter were almost perfect (≥ 0.90) while for ADC it was only moderate (ICC = 0.54 (0.04–0.78)). ADC and lesion diameter did not correlate significantly with Gleason score (ρ = 0.26 and ρ = 0.16) while SUVmax and PSMAvol did (ρ = − 0.474 and ρ = − 0.468). Conclusions: PSMA PET/MRI has similar accuracy and reliability to mpMRI regarding primary prostate cancer (PCa) localization. Purpose: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-targeted PET is increasingly used for staging prostate cancer (PCa) with high accuracy to detect significant PCa (sigPCa). [68 Ga]PSMA-11 PET/MRI-guided biopsy showed promising results but also persisting limitation of sampling error, due to impaired image fusion. We aimed to assess the possibility of intraoperative quantification of [18F]PSMA-1007 PET/CT uptake in core biopsies as an instant confirmation for accurate lesion sampling. Methods: In this IRB-approved, prospective, proof-of-concept study, we included five consecutive patients with suspected PCa. All underwent [18F]PSMA-1007 PET/CT scans followed by immediate PET/CT-guided and saturation template biopsy (3.1 ± 0.3 h after PET). The activity in biopsy cores was measured as counts per minute (cpm) in a gamma spectrometer. Pearson's test was used to correlate counts with histopathology (WHO/ISUP), tumor length, and membranous PSMA expression on immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results: In 43 of 113 needles, PCa was present. The mean cpm was overall significantly higher in needles with PCa (263 ± 396 cpm) compared to needles without PCa (73 ± 44 cpm, p < 0.001). In one patient with moderate PSMA uptake (SUVmax 8.7), 13 out of 24 needles had increased counts (100–200 cpm) but only signs of inflammation and PSMA expression in benign glands on IHC. Excluding this case, ROC analysis resulted in an AUC of 0.81, with an optimal cut-off to confirm PCa at 75 cpm (sens/spec of 65.1%/87%). In all 4 patients with PCa, the first or second PSMA PET-guided needle was positive for sigPCa with high counts (156–2079 cpm). Conclusions: [18F]PSMA-1007 uptake in PCa can be used to confirm accurate lesion sampling of the dominant tumor intraoperatively. Summary: Background: In the last two decades, there has been a Copernican revolution in the decision-making for the treatment of Diverticular Disease. Purpose: This article provides a report on the state-of-the-art of surgery for sigmoid diverticulitis. Conclusion: Acute diverticulitis is the most common reason for colonic resection after cancer; in the last decade, the indication for surgical resection has become more and more infrequent also in emergency. Currently, emergency surgery is seldom indicated, mostly for severe abdominal infective complications. Nowadays, uncomplicated diverticulitis is the most frequent presentation of diverticular disease and it is usually approached with a conservative medical treatment. Non-Operative Management may be considered also for complicated diverticulitis with abdominal abscess. At present, there is consensus among experts that the hemodynamic response to the initial fluid resuscitation should guide the emergency surgical approach to patients with severe sepsis or septic shock. In hemodynamically stable patients, a laparoscopic approach is the first choice, and surgeons with advanced laparoscopic skills report advantages in terms of lower postoperative complication rates. At the moment, the so-called Hartmann's procedure is only indicated in severe generalized peritonitis with metabolic derangement or in severely ill patients. Some authors suggested laparoscopic peritoneal lavage as a bridge to surgery or also as a definitive treatment without colonic resection in selected patients. In case of hemodynamic instability not responding to fluid resuscitation, an initial damage control surgery seems to be more attractive than a Hartmann's procedure, and it is associated with a high rate of primary anastomosis. In this report, the authors provide a contribution of PMCT in assessing the cause of death due to natural disasters. Here, the PMCT findings of 43 subjects who died during both landslide and flood were described. The post-mortem imaging revealed, clearly, traumatic injuries and/or the presence of foreign material in airways allowing to assess the cause of death of each subject, together with external inspection and the collected circumstantial data. Particularly, the PMCT has been helpful for characterization and localization of the clogging substance in airways providing findings on bronchial branches involvement. Moreover, the investigation offered detailed data on skeletal injuries in all anatomic districts and put in evidence both the precise fracturing site and the characteristics of fracture stubs for each bone fracture. This report supports the recommendation of the virtual autopsy in a case with several victims, as in natural disasters, and its role as an alternative diagnostic investigation when the standard autopsy is not feasible. Single photon emitters in atomically-thin semiconductors can be deterministically positioned using strain induced by underlying nano-structures. Here, we couple monolayer WSe2 to high-refractive-index gallium phosphide dielectric nano-antennas providing both optical enhancement and monolayer deformation. For single photon emitters formed on such nano-antennas, we find very low (femto-Joule) saturation pulse energies and up to 104 times brighter photoluminescence than in WSe2 placed on low-refractive-index SiO2 pillars. We show that the key to these observations is the increase on average by a factor of 5 of the quantum efficiency of the emitters coupled to the nano-antennas. This further allows us to gain new insights into their photoluminescence dynamics, revealing the roles of the dark exciton reservoir and Auger processes. We also find that the coherence time of such emitters is limited by intrinsic dephasing processes. Our work establishes dielectric nano-antennas as a platform for high-efficiency quantum light generation in monolayer semiconductors. Objectives: 18F-NaF is a bone scanning radiotracer that reflects changes in bone metabolism, and it is applied in oncology to scan bone tumors or metastasis. Dentomaxillofacial alterations can lead to 18F-NaF uptake and could lead to false-positive results in PET/CT examinations. Hence, the objective of this research was to verify if the uptake of 18F-NaF in the mandible or maxilla is correlated to the presence of odontogenic alterations, which could lead to false-positive results in positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (PET/CT) examinations. Methods: 42 patients who underwent 18F-NaF PET/CT examinations and panoramic radiographs to detect bone metastasis and to assess oral conditions before oncologic treatment were included. Edentulous patients and patients with neoplasms in the maxillofacial area, and those whose imaging examinations had technical failures were excluded from the study. Results: A total of 252 areas from panoramic radiographs and PET/CT examinations were assessed. It was observed that the presence of periodontal bone loss resulted in a higher number of cases with false negatives. Accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 18F-NaF uptake—regardless of the type of odontogenic origin alteration—were 76.2%, 53.3%, and 89.4%, respectively. Conclusion: 18F-NaF uptake in the maxilla or mandible could be influenced by oral alterations in the alveolar bones. The alterations in the oral cavity that lead to 18F-NaF accumulation should be recognized by medical radiologists to prevent false-positive results in PET/CT examinations using the tracer 18F-NaF. Purpose: Ultrasound-guided biopsy (US biopsy) with 10–12 cores has a suboptimal sensitivity for clinically significant prostate cancer (sigPCa). If US biopsy is negative, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)–guided biopsy is recommended, despite a low specificity for lesions with score 3–5 on Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PIRADS). Screening and biopsy guidance using an imaging modality with high accuracy could reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies, reducing side effects. The aim of this study was to assess the performance of positron emission tomography/MRI with 68Ga-labeled prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA-PET/MRI) to detect and localize primary sigPCa (ISUP grade group 3 and/or cancer core length ≥ 6 mm) and guide biopsy. Methods: Prospective, open-label, single-center, non-randomized, diagnostic accuracy study including patients with suspected PCa by elevation of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level and a suspicious lesion (PIRADS ≥3) on multiparametric MRI (mpMRI). Forty-two patients underwent PSMA-PET/MRI followed by both PSMA-PET/MRI-guided and section-based saturation template biopsy between May 2017 and February 2019. Primary outcome was the accuracy of PSMA-PET/MRI for biopsy guidance using section-based saturation template biopsy as the reference standard. Results: SigPCa was found in 62% of the patients. Patient-based sensitivity, specificity, negative and positive predictive value, and accuracy for sigPCa were 96%, 81%, 93%, 89%, and 90%, respectively. One patient had PSMA-negative sigPCa. Eight of nine false-positive lesions corresponded to cancer on prostatectomy and one in six false-negative lesions was negative on prostatectomy. Conclusion: PSMA-PET/MRI has a high accuracy for detecting sigPCa and is a promising tool to select patients with suspicion of PCa for biopsy. Background: Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) may experience venous thrombosis while data regarding arterial thrombosis are sparse.Methods: Prospective multicenter study in 5 hospitals including 373 patients with Covid-19-related pneumonia. Demographic data, laboratory findings including coagulation tests and comorbidities were reported. During the follow-up any arterial or venous thrombotic events and death were registered.Results: Among 373 patients, 75 (20%) had a thrombotic event and 75 (20%) died. Thrombotic events included 41 venous thromboembolism and 34 arterial thrombosis. Age, cardiovascular disease, intensive care unit treatment, white blood cells, D-dimer, albumin and troponin blood levels were associated with thrombotic events. In a multivariable regression logistic model, intensive care unit treatment (Odds Ratio [OR]: 6.0; 95% Confidence Interval [CI] 2.8-12.6; p < 0.001); coronary artery disease (OR: 2.4; 95% CI 1.4-5.0; p = 0.022); and albumin levels (OR: 0.49; 95% CI 0.28-0.87; p = 0.014) were associated with ischemic events. Age, sex, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, heart failure, coronary heart disease, intensive care unit treatment, in-hospital thrombotic events, D-dimer, C-reactive protein, troponin, and albumin levels were associated with mortality. A multivariable Cox regression analysis showed that in-hospital thrombotic events (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.72; 95% CI 1.59-4.65; p < 0.001), age (HR: 1.035; 95% CI 1.014-1.057; p = 0.001), and albumin (HR: 0.447; 95% CI 0.277-0.723; p = 0.001) predicted morality.Conclusions: Covid-19 patients experience an equipollent rate of venous and arterial thrombotic events, that are associated with poor survival. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder associated with motor and non-motor symptoms. Current treatments primarily focus on managing motor symptom severity such as tremor, bradykinesia, and rigidity. However, as the disease progresses, treatment side-effects can emerge such as on/off periods and dyskinesia. The objective of the Levodopa Response Study was to identify whether wearable sensor data can be used to objectively quantify symptom severity in individuals with PD exhibiting motor fluctuations. Thirty-one subjects with PD were recruited from 2 sites to participate in a 4-day study. Data was collected using 2 wrist-worn accelerometers and a waist-worn smartphone. During Days 1 and 4, a portion of the data was collected in the laboratory while subjects performed a battery of motor tasks as clinicians rated symptom severity. The remaining of the recordings were performed in the home and community settings. To our knowledge, this is the first dataset collected using wearable accelerometers with specific focus on individuals with PD experiencing motor fluctuations that is made available via an open data repository. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. Dyskinesia and motor fluctuations are complications of PD medications. An objective measure of on/off time with/without dyskinesia has been sought for some time because it would facilitate the titration of medications. The objective of the dataset herein presented is to assess if wearable sensor data can be used to generate accurate estimates of limb-specific symptom severity. Nineteen subjects with PD experiencing motor fluctuations were asked to wear a total of five wearable sensors on both forearms and shanks, as well as on the lower back. Accelerometer data was collected for four days, including two laboratory visits lasting 3 to 4 hours each while the remainder of the time was spent at home and in the community. During the laboratory visits, subjects performed a battery of motor tasks while clinicians rated limb-specific symptom severity. At home, subjects were instructed to use a smartphone app that guided the periodic performance of a set of motor tasks. A medico-legal consult is frequently required in a clinical context in order to assess the eventual compatibility of specific wounds with a self- or hetero-infliction. Purpose: To compare the 18F-NaF PET/CT studies (18F-NaF) with other imaging methods in the detection of skeletal metastases (SM) in patients with medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 31 patients with MTC who performed 18F-NaF to assess SM. The results of the 18F-NaF were compared with other imaging methods performed for metastasis detection: 99Tc-MDP bone scan (BS), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), contrast-enhanced CT (CT), and 68Ga-Dotatate and 18F-FDG PET/CT studies. A qualitative analysis comparing the 18F-NaF findings with the ones of the other methods was performed, and the results were classified as superior (>), equal (=), and inferior (<). Results: Eleven patients had no bone metastases detected on any of the imaging methods used. Twenty patients presented SM depicted on 18F-NaF. Of these 20 patients, 12 performed bone scan (in 9 18F-NaF > BS and in 3 18F-NaF = BS), 1 performed 18F-FDG (18F-NaF > 18F-FDG), 4 performed 68Ga-Dotatate (in 2 18F-NaF > 68Ga-Dotatate and in 2 18F-NaF = 68Ga-Dotatate), 20 performed CT of at least one body segment (in 15 18F-NaF = CT and in 5 18F-NaF > CT), and 16 performed MRI of at least one body segment, and in all of them, the 18F-NaF was equal to the MRI. Beside this, the 18F-NaF detected SM in body segments not routinely scanned in MRI and CT. Conclusion: In patients with MTC, the 18F-NaF seems to be equal or superior to other imaging modalities in the detection of SM and allows the analysis of the whole skeletal in a single study. Adsorption-driven heat transfer technology using water as working fluid is a promising eco-friendly strategy to address the exponential increase of global energy demands for cooling and heating purposes. Here we present the water sorption properties of a porous aluminum carboxylate metal-organic framework, [Al(OH)(C6H3NO4)]·nH2O, KMF-1, discovered by a joint computational predictive and experimental approaches, which exhibits step-like sorption isotherms, record volumetric working capacity (0.36 mL mL−1) and specific energy capacity (263 kWh m−3) under cooling working conditions, very high coefficient of performances of 0.75 (cooling) and 1.74 (heating) together with low driving temperature below 70 °C which allows the exploitation of solar heat, high cycling stability and remarkable heat storage capacity (348 kWh m−3). This level of performances makes this porous material as a unique and ideal multi-purpose water adsorbent to tackle the challenges of thermal energy storage and its further efficient exploitation for both cooling and heating applications. Adsorption-based heat transfer devices are attractive for clean energy resources, but those using water as the working fluid require suitable water adsorbents. Background: A systematic review with a meta-analysis was performed to determine the prevalence and risk factors for secondary de novo adenocarcinoma in the colon used as a urinary diversion not exposed to the fecal stream. Methods: The systematic review of the literature identified 47 patients with secondary adenocarcinoma in a colonic urinary diversion not exposed to the fecal stream. Results: The diagnosis of secondary adenocarcinoma was determined due to the presence major local symptoms and because the cancer in half of the patients was detected at an advanced stage. Diagnosis at an earlier stage was associated with long-term cancer-free survival. Conclusions: The authors concluded that cystoscopy-colonoscopy screening as suggested by the American Gastroenterology Society for the general population should be applied to patients who have colon urinary diversion not exposed to the fecal stream. For patients with active high-grade inflammation, difficulty with self-catheterization, or symptoms, cystoscopy should be performed earlier. Background: Dosimetry for diagnostic agents is performed to assess the risk of radiation detriment (e.g., cancer) associated with the imaging agent and the risk is assessed by computing the effective dose coefficient, e. Stylized phantoms created by the MIRD Committee and updated by work performed by Cristy-Eckerman (CE) have been the standard in diagnostic dosimetry. Recently, the ICRP developed voxelized phantoms, which are described in ICRP Publication 110. These voxelized phantoms are more realistic and detailed in describing human anatomy compared with the CE stylized phantoms. Ideally, all tissues should be represented and their pharmacokinetics collected for an as accurate a dosimetric calculation as possible. As the number of source tissues included increases, the calculated e becomes more accurate. There is, however, a trade-off between the number of source tissues considered, and the time and effort required to measure the time-activity curve for each tissue needed for the calculations. In this study, we used a previously published 68Ga-DOTA-TATE data set to examine how the number of source tissues included for both the ICRP voxelized and CE stylized phantoms affected e. Results: Depending upon the number of source tissues included e varied between 14.0–23.5 μSv/MBq for the ICRP voxelized and 12.4–27.7 μSv/MBq for the CE stylized phantoms. Furthermore, stability in e, defined as a < 10% difference between e obtained using all source tissues compared to one using fewer source tissues, was obtained after including 5 (36%) of the 14 source tissues for the ICRP voxelized, and after including 3 (25%) of the 12 source tissues for the CE stylized phantoms. In addition, a 2-fold increase in e was obtained when all source tissues where included in the calculation compared to when the TIAC distribution was lumped into a single reminder-of-body source term. Conclusions: This study shows the importance of including the larger tissues like the muscles and remainder-of-body in the dosimetric calculations. The range of e based on the included tissues were less for the ICRP voxelized phantoms using tissue weighting factors from ICRP Publication 103 compared to CE stylized phantoms using tissue weighting factors from ICRP Publication 60. Estimating early postmortem interval (EPI) is a difficult task in daily forensic activity due to limitations of accurate and reliable methods. The aim of the present work is to describe a novel approach in the estimation of EPI based on quantitative magnetic resonance molecular imaging (qMRMI) using a pig phantom since post-mortem degradation of pig meat is similar to that of human muscles. On a pig phantom maintained at 20° degree, using a 1.5 T MRI scanner we performed 10 scans (every 4 hours) monitoring apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), fractional anisotropy (FA) magnetization transfer ration (MTR), tractography and susceptibility weighted changes in muscles until 36 hours after death. Cooling of the phantom during the experiment was recorded. Histology was also obtained. Pearson's Test was carried out for time correlation between post-mortem interval and MRI data. We found a significative inverse correlation between ADC, FA, MT values and PMI. Colon cancer has a high prevalence worldwide and is a serious public health problem. Early diagnosis greatly improves its prognosis and, among the existing methods, the detection of fecal occult blood is the only noninvasive test recommended for screening of the disease. To promote its massive application as a screening tool for asymptomatic populations in low-resource settings, the availability of a reliable and cost-effective method is imperative. Here, we describe the development and validation of a sensitive nanobody-based immunoassay for the detection of hemoglobin in human fecal samples. The nanobodies were selected from a library generated from a llama immunized with human hemoglobin, using a high-throughput platform that enabled the identification of the best nanobody pair. The assay allowed a sub-ng/mL limit of detection to be reached in phosphate-buffered saline, and was validated with stool samples, showing excellent reproducibility (CV% < 15 inter-day precision) and accuracy at 2 and 4 μg of hemoglobin per gram of feces, which are well below the recommended cutoff for this test (10–20 μg/g). Moreover, no cross-reactivity was observed with a panel of dietary non-human hemoglobins removing the need for pre-test dietary restrictions. Considering that the monodomain nature of nanobodies facilitates their straightforward and low-cost production by bacterial fermentation, with their provided sequences and using synthetic genes, the assay reported here could be replicated in any laboratory to perform thousands of tests for early detection of colorectal cancer at almost no cost. Unique structural and optical properties of atomically thin two-dimensional semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides enable in principle their efficient coupling to photonic cavities having the optical mode volume close to or below the diffraction limit. Recently, it has become possible to make all-dielectric nano-cavities with reduced mode volumes and negligible non-radiative losses. Here, we realise low-loss high-refractive-index dielectric gallium phosphide (GaP) nano-antennas with small mode volumes coupled to atomic mono- and bilayers of WSe 2 . We observe a photoluminescence enhancement exceeding 10 4 compared with WSe 2 placed on planar GaP, and trace its origin to a combination of enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate, favourable modification of the photoluminescence directionality and enhanced optical excitation efficiency. A further effect of the coupling is observed in the photoluminescence polarisation dependence and in the Raman scattering signal enhancement exceeding 10 3 . Our findings reveal dielectric nano-antennas as a promising platform for engineering light-matter coupling in two-dimensional semiconductors. Dielectric nano-antennas may be used as a platform for boosting light-matter coupling in 2D semiconductors. Herein, we report a case of a 19-year-old man with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B (MEN2B) and medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) diagnosed when he was 12 years of age. The patient had previously undergone total thyroidectomy, cervical radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. He progressed with known bone, pulmonary, and lymph node metastases and was scanned with 18F-fluoride (18F-NaF) and 68Ga-dotatate whole-body positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for metastatic disease monitoring. We found that the MTC bone metastases and soft tissue calcified metastases were better characterized on 18F-NaF PET/CT than on 68Ga-dotatate PET/CT. This case illustrates that the 18F-NaF PET/CT could be helpful not only to the detection of bone metastases but also to the detection of calcified soft tissue metastases in patients with MTC. A phenomenological model based on a linear relationship between the magnetic coercivity field and the reciprocal of the grain diameter is applied to explain the anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) imparted to artificial samples with different concentrations of a very well characterized magnetite powder. By analyses of scanning electron microscopy images, the spherically shaped single domain synthetic magnetite is found to follow a lognormal grain size distribution with ~86 nm of mean diameter. The proposed model, fitted to ARM measurements up to a peak alternating field of 100 mT, yields a very good agreement. The coercivity behaviour predicted by micromagnetism theory disagrees with the experimental results of this work. A likely explanation for the discrepancy is that the magnetite particles, which consist of a mixture of grains in coherent rotation and curling modes, produce similar observations as domain processes. Single-quantum emitters are an important resource for photonic quantum technologies, constituting building blocks for single-photon sources, stationary qubits, and deterministic quantum gates. Robust implementation of such functions is achieved through systems that provide both strong light--matter interactions and a low-loss interface between emitters and optical fields. Existing platforms providing such functionality at the single-node level present steep scalability challenges. Here, we develop a heterogeneous photonic integration platform that provides such capabilities in a scalable on-chip implementation, allowing direct integration of GaAs waveguides and cavities containing self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots--a mature class of solid-state quantum emitter--with low-loss Si3N4 waveguides. We demonstrate a highly efficient optical interface between Si3N4 waveguides and singlequantum dots in GaAs geometries, with performance approaching that of devices optimized for each material individually. This includes quantum dot radiative rate enhancement in microcavities, and a path for reaching the non-perturbative strong-coupling regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cancer cells maintain high rates of glycolysis. Pyruvate dehydrogenase kinases (PDK) contribute to this phenomenon, which favours apoptosis resistance and cellular transformation. We previously reported upregulation of PDK4 in normal mucosa of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients compared with controls and in preneoplastic intestine of our mouse model. Decreased methylation of four consecutive PDK4 CpGs was observed in normal mucosa of patients. Although other members of the PDK family have been investigated for transformation potential, PDK4 has not been extensively studied.Methods: PDK4 methylation in blood of CRC patients and controls was evaluated by pyrosequencing. PDK4 expression in human colon carcinoma cells was down-regulated by RNAi. Cellular migration and invasion, apoptosis and qRT-PCR of key genes were assessed.Results: Pyrosequencing revealed decreased methylation of the same four consecutive CpGs in the blood of patients compared with controls. Cellular migration and invasion were reduced and apoptosis was increased following transient or stable inhibition of PDK4. Expression of vimentin, HIF-1 and VEGFA was reduced.Conclusions: These studies demonstrate the involvement of PDK4 in transformation. Methylation assessment of PDK4 in the blood may be useful for non-invasive CRC detection. PDK4 should be considered as a target for development of anticancer strategies and therapies. Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis for aneuploidy testing (PGD-A) is a tool to identify euploid embryos during IVF. The suggested populations of patients that can benefit from it are infertile women of advanced maternal age, with a history of recurrent miscarriages and/or IVF failures. However, a general consensus has not yet been reached.After the clinical failure of its first version based on cleavage stage biopsy and 9 chromosome-FISH analysis, PGD-A is currently performed by 24 chromosome screening techniques on trophectoderm (TE) biopsies. This approach has been clearly demonstrated to involve a higher clinical efficiency with respect to the standard care, in terms of sustained pregnancy rate per transfer and lower miscarriage rate. However, data about PGD-A efficacy calculated on a per intention-to-treat basis, as well as an analysis of its cost-effectiveness, are still missing.TE biopsy is a safe and extensively validated approach with low biological and technical margin of error. Firstly, the prevalence of mosaic diploid/aneuploid blastocysts is estimated to be between 0 and 16 %, thus largely tolerable. Secondly, all the comprehensive chromosome screening (CCS) technologies adapted to, or designed to conduct PGD-A are highly concordant, and qPCR in particular has been proven to show the lowest false positive error rate (0.5 %) and a clinically recognizable error rate per blastocyst of just 0.21 %.In conclusion, there is a sufficient body of evidence to support the clinical application of CCS-based PGD-A on TE biopsies. Cough is important for airway clearance, particularly if penetration/aspiration of foreign material occurs during swallow. Measures of voluntary cough production from ten male participants with stage II-III Parkinson's disease (PD) who showed no videofluorographic evidence of penetration/aspiration (Group 1) were examined and compared with those of ten male participants with stage II-III PD who showed videofluorographic evidence of penetration/aspiration (Group 2). The degree of penetration/aspiration was expertly judged from the videofluorographic examinations of the participants' sequential swallow of a thin, 30-cc bolus. Measured cough parameters included inspiratory phase duration, inspiratory peak flow, compression phase duration, expiratory peak flow, expiratory rise time, and cough volume acceleration. Results indicated significant group differences for the majority of cough measures, except for inspiratory phase duration and inspiratory peak flow. A modest relationship existed between voluntary cough parameters and penetration/aspiration scores. Decreased ability to adequately clear material from the airway with voluntary cough may exacerbate symptoms resulting from penetration/aspiration, particularly for those with neurodegenerative disease. Aspiration pneumonia is the leading cause of death in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. In clinical practice, the videofluoroscopic examination (VFE) is the most common method for evaluation of swallowing disorders. One of the variables manipulated during the VFE is consistency of the bolus. The results of this examination greatly influence the recommendations made by speech-language pathologists regarding swallow therapy and/or intervention. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the effects of bolus consistency on penetration-aspiration (P-A) score and timing of swallow of persons with PD. The videoradiographic images of ten participants with PD swallowing six thin and six pudding-thick boluses were analyzed. Swallow timing and P-A were measured. (i.e., oral transit time, pharyngeal transit time, number of tongue pumps, and P-A score). The results demonstrated various significant differences and relationships among the dependent variables. We focus here on the application of multi critera decision analysis (MCDA) techniques in hardware/software partitioning activities to be used in the design and deployment of embedded systems. Our goal is to identify the best existing methods and tools suitable to support the approach we have taken for the partitioning process. We provide this via a survey of the most well-known MCDA methods and tools (for a specific class of MCDA methods called multi attribute decision making. We identify a set of criteria that need to be addressed, in some way, by the methods, and implemented by related tools. These '11-suitability criteria' help us in deciding the appropriateness of the analysed methods and tools for the envisaged partitioning approach. In brief, we are interested that the MCDA methods are taking into account multiple extra-functional properties, expressed by a variety of types, with possible missing values, should enable dependency handling, decision traceability, etc. The conclusion is that there are criteria that are not fulfilled by any of the methods, and hence there is no method or tool that can directly used for the partitioning. Intercontinental introductions are widespread in the genus Spartina, with important ecological and evolutionary consequences. The native or introduced status of Spartina species is then critical with regard to biodiversity assessment, especially for vulnerable Mediterranean coastline ecosystems. Spartina versicolor was first recorded in southern France in 1849, then successively in various places on the European and North-African Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts. This species is considered to be either a European native or an invasive species introduced from North America which has a high morphological similarity to the Atlantic American species Spartina patens. We performed extensive sampling of S. versicolor in Europe and North Africa (from natural populations and herbarium collections) and compared these samples to other European and American Spartina species (including S. patens). Chromosome counts were reported for the first time and revealed that S. versicolor is tetraploid (2 n = 4 x = 40). Phylogenetic analyses based on chloroplast and nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences did not reveal any molecular variation within S. versicolor. In this species, a single haplotype, that is identical to one haplotype of S. patens, was found in the four chloroplast and the nuclear ribosomal ITS regions investigated. In addition, simple sequence repeat markers were used and revealed a low level of genetic diversity within S. versicolor, suggesting that the introduction of S. versicolor occurred from a narrow genetic pool of S. patens from North America. Furthermore, in our study bowel loop dilation at pre-interventional CT scan was highly predictive of bowel ischemia, and mean time interval between onset of symptoms and surgery was less than six hours (349 min). A total of 17 of the 40 patients (42.5%) presented with bowel necrosis (2/17) or ischemia (15/17) on pre-interventional computed tomography. After stenting, 25 out of 40 patients (62.5%) underwent abdominal laparoscopy or laparotomy; specifically, in 12 patients (48%) the ischemic bowel was resected, and in the remaining 13 patients (52%) no additional surgery was needed or possible.
