Hybridisation caused by anthropogenic movements of animals is a conservation concern. Black-faced impala (Aepyceros melampus petersi) are endemic to north-western Namibia and south-western Angola and are geographically isolated from common impala (A. m. melampus). Common impala have been translocated into the black-faced impala range creating a hybridisation risk. We validated 13 microsatellite markers for the detection of recent hybridisation events. We used these markers to assess the genetic variation and differentiation among impala within Etosha National Park (NP), Southern Cross Private Game Reserve (SCPGR), Namibia, and private game ranches across South Africa. We confirmed that "black-nosed" impala in South Africa were A. m. melampus, thus providing more evidence that the black blaze on the face cannot be used to distinguish between the two subspecies. We detected four hybrids and one common impala on SCPGR. These five individuals were removed from SCPGR at time of sampling. We found two potential hybrids in southern Etosha NP. Further sampling of animals within Etosha NP is recommended to determine the extent of hybridisation within the park. Many workers are exposed to health problems arising from molds, fungi, and their toxins during waste processing. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) level in airborne and settled dust, aflatoxin B1-albumin (AFB1-Alb) adduct in serum, liver and kidney biochemical tests, and body redox change of workers in municipal dry waste-processing sites were investigated. The surface, personal, and area air dust and the blood of workers' samples were collected from the plastic and bread waste-sorting sections in three recycling municipal dry waste sites. Digestion (only for serum samples), passed through SPE cartridge, elution, and collection with methanol, immune-affinity column clean-up, and HPLC system equipped with post-column derivatization method and fluorescence detection were performed for determination of AFB1 and AFB1-Alb levels in the samples. The mean level of dust and AFB1 in the personal and area air, and in the settled dust and the AFB1-Alb in the serum of workers in the bread waste sorting, was higher than plastic waste-sorting samples, in all of the sites. The differences in the biochemical profiles of subjects exposed to aflatoxin B1 as compared to the control group especially in liver and kidney function parameters as well as antioxidant factors of the serum were significant. The workers in handling of municipal waste may be exposed to potentially hazardous levels of aflatoxin B1. Working as a refuse collector is a physically strenuous activity. The aim of the investigations in this work was to evaluate the fatigue and subjective complaints of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among refuse collectors. The study involved 27 employees; average age: 32.1 years (SD = 3.15), seniority: 2.67 years (SD = 1.56). To evaluate fatigue a modified 30-piece questionnaire with a Borg scale was used. MSDs were measured by the Nordic Standardized Questionnaire with the Borg scale. After work, the highest rates of fatigue were reported for the symptoms: "feel thirsty," "give a yawn," "want to lie down," "feel strained in the eyes," "feel a pain in the back," "become drowsy," "feel stiff in the shoulders," "feel heavy in the head" and "have a headache." There was a high intensity of MSDs reported for the body segments "shoulders/upper arms," "lower back," "upper back," "hips/upper legs," "head/neck," "elbows/forearms" and "wrists/hands." Complaints regarding limited mobility due to MSDs at work and outside of work have been observed for the "shoulders/upper arms," "lower back" and "upper back." Refuse collectors complained more about "drowsiness and dullness" than the "projection of physical impairment" and "difficulty in concentration." Discomfort occurred primarily in the upper segments of the body and made staff mobility difficult both at work and after work. The test results can be used in the prevention of fatigue and discomfort. It is recommended to conduct training on the correct ways of performing work and resting and the repair or replacement of faulty containers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent outbreak of avian influenza in the poultry sector of Cameroon has raised a concern about the level of implementation of biosecurity measures (BM) on poultry farms. Therefore, a study using a questionnaire on 102 randomly selected poultry farms was undertaken. Some measures with high adoption levels (> 90%) included “protection of airing openings of poultry barns by a wire mesh,” “no external animal allowed to enter the farm,” “respect of all-in all-out principle,” “functional footbath,” “rodent control,” and “feedstuff protection from access to rodents.” The least implemented measures (less than 20%) were “wearing of dedicated clothing (clean coveralls and boots) by workers,” “disinfection of visitors,” and “presence of storage room for dead animals.” Only for “isolation” component of biosecurity, compliance with biosecurity measures was good, with more than 50% of farms having an adoption rate greater than 75%. The mean biosecurity score for the assessed farms was 19.29 ± 1.89 for a maximum score of 38 points. The score was significantly and positively correlated (p < 0.05) with the number of chicken and the geographic location of farms. The other results showed that the mean number of broiler per cycle was 550.82 ± 76 for a stocking density of 27.20 ± 6.64 birds per m2. In conclusion, broiler production in the Western highland is dominated by small-scale units with low level of biosecurity practices positively and significantly (p < 0.05) influenced by some production characteristics. As a counterweight to genetic erosion, landraces could become important germplasm resources for breeding. In the present study the genetic diversity of 62 Greek and Eastern European oat accessions (seven cultivars and 55 common and red oat landraces collected from 1904 to 1960) was studied using simple sequence repeats and 31 morphological descriptors. High levels of polymorphism were detected and 209 distinctive alleles were identified; on average 14.65 alleles per primer. Both, the principal component analysis derived from the morphological data, and the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean from the molecular analysis clustered the oat genotypes according to their type (common and red oats). In addition, the analysis of molecular variation showed that there were noteworthy differences within designated geographic regions. Moreover, a more discrete subpopulation structure was identified based on allele frequency using a Bayesian clustering approach. Oats are a low input cereal widely grown across the world as both a grain and forage crop. Significant areas of production are in Northern Europe and North America and also in China and Australia. Although a traditional crop in many countries, in the last 50 years there has been a significant shift in oat production as a consequence of changing agricultural production and competition from other cereal crops. Oats are of significant economic importance for human consumption, for livestock feed and increasingly as a source of high value compounds with industrial applications as a consequence of the many unique properties of the oat grain. Traditional use in human diets in many countries has been boosted by the recent recognition of oats as a health food. This is attributed to the presence of β-glucan, the major endospermic cell wall polysaccharide. As a result, there has been an increase in the use of oats and a broadening of oat based products. Increasing knowledge of the composition of the oat grain and its value for the various end-users is leading to new opportunities for the crop. While the value of oats as a break crop in cereal based rotations is widely recognised, maintaining the profitability of the crop whilst meeting the needs of end users is essential for future production. Opportunities exist for plant breeders and agronomists to introduce new oat varieties with tailored agronomic approaches to address this challenge and to ensure the sustainability of oats for the future. Small hospitals are the grassroots for the big hospital structures, so proper waste management practices require to be initiated from there. Small hospitals contribute a lot in the health care facilities, but due to their poor waste management practices, they pose serious biomedical waste pollution. A survey was conducted with 13 focus questions collected from the 100 hospital present in Dehradun. Greater value of per day per bed waste was found among the small hospitals (178 g compared with 114 g in big hospitals), indicating unskilled waste management practices. Small hospitals do not follow the proper way for taking care of segregation of waste generated in the hospital, and most biomedical wastes were collected without segregation into infectious and noninfectious categories. The mountain bongo antelope Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci has rapidly declined in recent decades, due to a combination of hunting, habitat degradation and disease. Endemic to Kenya, mountain bongo populations have shrunk to approximately 100 individuals now mainly confined to the Aberdares mountain ranges. Indirect observation of bongo signs (e.g. tracks, dung) can be misleading, thus methods to ensure reliable species identification, such as DNA-based techniques, are necessary to effectively study and monitor this species. We assessed bongo presence in four mountain habitats in Kenya (Mount Kenya National Park, Aberdare National Park, Eburu and Mau forests) and carried out a preliminary analysis of genetic variation by examining 466 bp of the first domain of the mtDNA control region using DNA extracted from faecal samples. Of the 201 dung samples collected in the field, 102 samples were molecularly identified as bongo, 97 as waterbuck, one as African buffalo and one as Aders' duiker. Overall species-identification accuracy by experienced trackers was 64%, with very high error of commission when identifying bongo sign (37%), and high error of omission for waterbuck sign (82%), suggesting that the two species' signs are easily confused. Despite high variation in the mtDNA control region in most antelope species, our results suggest low genetic variation in mountain bongo as only two haplotypes were detected in 102 samples analyzed. In contrast, the analysis of 63 waterbuck samples from the same sites revealed 21 haplotypes. Nevertheless, further examination using nuclear DNA markers (e.g. microsatellites) in a multi-locus approach is still required, especially because the use of mitochondrial DNA can result in population overestimation as distinct dung samples can potentially be originated from the same individual. Abstract  This study applied two methods to assess intra-collection duplication within 339 Nordic oat (Avena sativa L.) accessions preserved by Plant Gene Resources of Canada (PGRC). Putative duplicates, that is accessions carrying a similar accession name, were grouped into 52 duplication groups and included 230 of the 339 Nordic oat accessions. A field assessment based on visual inspection of field plots was conducted during two growing seasons to detect distinct phenotypes within each duplication group. Simultaneously, a descriptor assessment using seven characters with altogether sixteen character states was used in both years for the same purpose. The combined results of both assessments and both years indicated that among the 230 accessions in duplication groups only 118 could be identified as distinct. This would allow for a reduction of 33% of the Nordic oat accessions at PGRC. The field assessment method detected fewer (75%) distinct accessions than the descriptor assessment (84%), when considering all accessions identified as distinct as 100%. Repeatability between years was higher in the field assessment (70%) than in the descriptor assessment (64%). The field assessment requires an experienced germplasm evaluator, but allows for handling large numbers of germplasm accessions and for detecting functional, fitness related, and user-relevant diversity. Combining field assessment with descriptor assessment and more sophisticated methods on selected subgroups may be the most efficient method for determination of internal duplication in genebank collections. Bulking phenotypically similar accessions within duplication groups is preferable to eliminating duplicate accessions when collection rationalization is required, as it reduces the risk of loosing diversity. Abstract  A characterization of 10,105 accessions of hexaploid cultivated oat (Avena sativa L. sensu lato) from 85 countries of the Plant Gene Resources of Canada (PGRC) collection was conducted at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Eight environmentally stable morphological characters (panicle type, panicle erectness, panicle density, lemma colour, dorsal awn of lemma, ligula, major infraspecific group), differentiated into 18 character states, were used to define genetically distinct morphological groups. Comparisons of oat diversity from different countries, among the major infraspecific groups and among Canadian oat cultivars registered between 1886 and 2002 were possible. The 10,105 accessions represented 118 different morphological groups. The number of accessions in each morphological group was unevenly distributed with the 13 most frequent morphological groups including 90% of the accessions. The most frequent morphological groups in the PGRC collection were identical with the most frequent types of Canadian oat cultivars. The greatest richness of diversity was found in oat from countries with temperate climates and intensive oat breeding programmes. The oat accessions comprised 8,754 accessions of common hulled oat, 183 accessions of hull-less oat and 1,168 accessions of red oat. For red oat (A. byzantina C. Koch), West Asia was richest in diversity. The USA could be considered a secondary centre of diversity for red oat and Canada a secondary centre of diversity for hull-less oat. Morphological diversity of oat cultivars released in Canada increased during the twentieth century. The morphological groups were related to formal taxonomical infraspecific classifications of A. sativa. Organic waste workers are exposed to high endotoxin levels that may result in respiratory health effects. This study describes changes in lung function and methacholine airway responsiveness over a workweek in household organic waste loaders. Assessment of lung function and methacholine airway responsiveness before and after a workweek in six organic waste loaders with and ten loaders without regular respiratory symptoms. Methacholine responsiveness was expressed as dose–response slope, i.e. % fall in FEV1 per mg methacholine compared to either the post-saline value (DRSsal), or the highest FEV1 (DRSmax). Monday morning, FEV1 was similar in cases and controls. Over the workweek, FEV1 and MMEF decreased slightly in both cases and controls ( P > 0.10). In contrast, DRS increased in cases and decreased in control subjects ( P < 0.10). The difference in % change of DRS was statistically significant after adjustment for smoking and age. Our results suggest exaggeration of pre-existent airway inflammation during the workweek in organic waste loaders with regular respiratory symptoms. This needs confirmation in larger studies. Preventive workplace regulations are so far not based on an ubiquitously accepted threshold for airborne endotoxin in the bioaerosol. In a cross-sectional study, 150 employees of a cotton spinning mill underwent lung function testing. Furthermore, in a random subset of 75 textile workers cross-shift lung function test and methacholine challenges were performed. Airborne current endotoxin exposure was classified as “low”, “medium”, and “high” (≤100, >100–≤450, and >450 Endotoxin Units (EU)/m3, respectively) based on endotoxin activity. The exposure–response relationship between current endotoxin exposure and prevalence of an obstructive ventilation pattern was significant (test for linear trend: P = 0.019); the adjusted odds ratio for high endotoxin exposure was 11.22 (95% confidence interval 1.03–121.17). Within individuals, FEV1/FVC% was significantly reduced after the shift (paired t test: P = 0.009) but not related to current endotoxin exposure. Twelve workers showed bronchial hyperresponsiveness (8.1% before and 12.2% after the work shift; Fisher’s exact test: P = 0.021). The study among German cotton textile workers suggests an exposure-dependent effect of current endotoxin exposure on lung function impairment with significant effects above 450 EU/m3. To evaluate acute and chronic effects of long-term exposure to organic dust on respiratory disorders and lung function among employees at 41 composting facilities in Germany. A total of 218 compost workers and 66 control subjects were enrolled in the cohort. They were evaluated using a standardized questionnaire, a clinical examination, and spirometric measurements. Changes of symptoms, respiratory disorders, and lung function were determined in a first survey after 5 years of exposure in 123 compost workers and 48 controls. Exposure measurements were performed at six composting facilities for respirable dust, cultivable microorganisms, and endotoxins. Exposure measurements revealed high concentrations of thermo-tolerant/thermophilic actinomycetes and filamentous fungi in the bioaerosols at the composting sites. A significantly higher job fluctuation was observed among the compost workers compared to control subjects (95 vs. 18; p < 0.05). Compost workers reported a significantly higher prevalence of mucosal membrane irritation (MMI) of the eyes and upper airways than control subjects. Conjunctivitis was diagnosed significantly more often in compost workers. Forced vital capacity in percent of predicted (FVC%) of the non-smoking compost workers declined significantly (−5.4%) during the observation period compared to control subjects. The decline of FVC% in 16 compost workers exceeded 10% of initial values. A significant increase was observed in the number of compost workers suffering from chronic bronchitis (RR = 1.41; 95% CI = 1.28–1.55). Allergic alveolitis was diagnosed clinically in two compost workers. The exposure to organic dust at workplaces of composting facilities is associated with adverse acute and chronic respiratory health effects, including MMI, chronic bronchitis, and an accelerated decline of FVC%. The pattern of health effects differs from those at other workplaces with exposures to organic dust possibly due to high concentrations of thermo-tolerant/thermophilic actinomycetes and filamentous fungi at composting plants. Objectives:Inhalation of bioaerosols has been hypothesised to cause “toxic pneumonitis” that should increase lung epithelial permeability at the bronchioloalveolar level. Serum Clara cell protein (CC16) and serum surfactant protein B (SPB) have been proposed as sensitive markers of lung epithelial injury. This study was aimed at looking for increased lung epithelial permeability by determining CC16 and SPB in workers exposed to bioaerosols from wastewater or garbage.Methods:Subjects (778 wastewater, garbage and control workers; participation 61%) underwent a medical examination, lung function tests [American Thoracic Society (ATS) criteria], and determination of CC16 and SPB. Symptoms of endotoxin exposure and several potential confounders (age, gender, smoking, kidney function, obesity) were looked for. Results were examined with multiple linear or logistic regression.Results:Exposure to bioaerosols increased CC16 concentration in the wastewater workers. No effect of exposure on SPB was found. No clue to work-related respiratory diseases was found.Conclusions:The increase in CC16 in serum supports the hypothesis that bioaerosols cause subclinical “toxic pneumonitis”, even at low exposure. Objective. To determine the prevalence of respiratory symptoms among workers processing herring and assess ex vivo cytokine release in response to agents at their workplace. Methods. We applied a questionnaire, and performed skin prick testing and pulmonary investigations in 36 workers at two herring factories, using 31 municipal workers as controls. In a whole blood assay (WBA), venous blood from the subjects was incubated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), β(1,3)-glucan or sterile-filtered, fish constituents such as skin and rinsing water. We determined the IL-1β and IL-8 release in the plasma by chemiluminescence ELISA. Results. Among smoking fish-factory workers the forced vital capacity (FVC) was higher (per cent predicted 92.0 vs 85.0; P=0.028) than among municipal workers. Fish rinsing water induced WBA IL-8 release to higher levels than LPS and glucan. Among non-smokers the induced IL-1β release for rinsing water (P=0.007) and the IL-8 release for skin (P=0.001) and meat (P=0.003) were higher in fish-factory workers than in municipal workers. The IL-1β release for rinsing water (P=0.028) and skin (P=0.041) was higher among non-smokers than among smokers, and so was the IL-8 release for rinsing water (P=0.008). Conclusions. Assessing the cytokine release by use of the WBA we identified substances in the occupational environment with a pro-inflammatory potential comparable to that of LPS. The cytokine release for fish constituents was highest among non-smoking fish-factory workers. The results suggest a priming effect of the work exposure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Airborne fungal contaminants are increasingly gaining importance in view of health hazards caused by the spores themselves or by microbial metabolites. In addition to the risk for infection, the allergenic and toxigenic properties, as well as the inflammatory effects are discussed in this review as possible health impacts of bioaerosols. A major problem is the lack of threshold values for pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi, both in the workplace and in outdoor air. While the relevance of mycotoxins has been intensely studied in connection with contamination of food and feed, the possible respiratory uptake of mycotoxins from the air has so far not been sufficiently taken into account. Toxic secondary metabolites are expected to be present in airborne spores, and may thus occur in airborne dust and bioaerosols. Potential health risks cannot be estimated reliably unless exposure to mycotoxins is determined qualitatively and quantitatively. Microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOC) have been suggested to affect human health, causing lethargy, headache, and irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes of the nose and throat. The production of MVOC by fungi has been discussed in connection with domestic indoor microbial pollution, but the relevance of fungal metabolites in working environments remains insufficiently studied.
