Seismotectonic and seismoacoustic studies carried out during an expedition onboard the R/V Akademik Boris Petrov in the Pechora Sea revealed a paleoseismic dislocation confined to a fault zone tracing the North Ural seismic lineament. The amplitude of this dislocation (the relative displacement of its sides) makes it possible to estimate the magnitude of the paleoearthquake that occurred within the North Ural lineament. This magnitude was used to estimate the maximum seismic impacts on offshore oil and gas facilities already in operation and those being designed for construction in the northeastern Pechora Sea. These estimates differ significantly from estimates made previously. The method of searching for paleoseismic dislocations using seismoacoustic methods, as well as lineament analysis, can be used for initial assessment seismic impacts in water areas, including the Laptev Sea, as the most seismically active region of the Arctic. This paper reports the obtained analysis data on the focal mechanisms and general distribution of earthquake epicenters in the Laptev Sea region. The principal stress axes directions were calculated by the formal stress inversion method for four groups of event clusters with known focal mechanisms. The distributions of the earthquake epicenters and crust thickness were compared. According to the seismological data, the extension axis of the Gakkel Ridge on the Laptev Sea shelf currently continues in the vicinity of the group of extension detachments located along the eastern boundary of the Anisin, Zarya, and Belkovskii–Svyatonosskii rift chains. The more ancient extension axis located along the group of detachments marking the eastern boundary of the Ust'-Lena and Omoloi rift systems and continuing the Gakkel Ridge axis is currently much less active. It carries residual stresses near its intersection with the Khatanga–Lomonosov fault zone in the northwestern parts of the shelf area and with the Lena–Taimyr zone of boundary uplifts, in the southwestern part. The axes oriented along the Olenyok and Bykovskii channels and the Siberian Platform boundary form extension conditions in the eastern part and strike–slip conditions in the western part of the Lena delta area. The article presents the results of DSS seismic surveys in the Persian Gulf. Bottom analog-type seismographs and seismic airgun sources were used in the studies. The bottom seismographs were moored and shooting was carried out according to three regional profiles with a length from 100 to 250 km. The main result of these studies was a velocity–depth model of the sedimentary cover and Earth's crust up to the Moho boundary, which was revealed at a depth of about 43 km in the water area. Given that the thickness of the upper crust is only 4–5 km and based on the velocity characteristics of the remaining layers, the type of crust can be attributed to the subcontinental Archean type. This situation (complete absence or drowning of the upper layer of the Earth's crust) is typical of the waters closest to the Persian Gulf: the Black, Caspian, Mediterranean, and Red seas. A structure was found in the Earth's crust of the studied area, which may be a brachyanticline with an isometric dome-shaped shape, which corresponds to the platform-type folding in the areas of salt dome tectonics. OBS observations in the Persian Gulf during a short time span have revealed the occurrence of low magnitude (ML = –0.2–2.9) earthquakes with hypocenters in the mantle beneath the Gulf and beneath the Zagros Mountain Massif. A cross-section across the shoreline of the Persian Gulf shows the projections of these hypocenters beneath the Zagros Mountains to make inclined layers that dip northeast at a high angle into the mantle down to depths of 120‒180 km. The 3D distribution of large and moderate magnitude earthquakes based on an improved earthquake catalog as reported by the US Geological Survey and by the International Seismological Centre (ISC) is not at variance with the distribution of microearthquakes and low magnitude earthquakes but seems rather to supplement it, forming a separate seismic dipping layer. According to the data acquired by OBS observations, seismic activity occurs throughout the entire crust and upper mantle of the region rather than in the upper crustal layers only as was asserted in previous publications. It is possible that collision and accompanying phenomena (mantle seismicity and destruction of the granitic layer in the crust) are related to the hypothetical rotation of the Earth around the center of rotation placed at Cyprus Island. Abstract—In 2007–2015, Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IO RAS) carried out seismological observations in the water area and on the coast of the Baltic Sea using autonomous seismic stations. Here, in the area of the Sambia Peninsula, previously considered aseismic, a strong perceptible earthquake with a magnitude of about M = 4.6 occurred in 2004. The most interesting data were obtained by IO RAS in 2008–2009 from seismological monitoring using autonomous bottom and coastal seismic stations. The data obtained in 2010–2015 turned out to be unsuitable for full-scope processing due to several causes (losses of bottom seismographs, high noise level at coastal stations, etc.). Seismological monitoring in the west of the Kaliningrad region and in the adjoining area of the Baltic Sea detected weak earthquakes with magnitudes ML = 2.5–3 whose sources are confined to the development are of the Kravtsovskoe offshore oil field. Some of these earthquakes have been recorded by the stations of the Norwegian seismic array NORSAR and by the seismic stations of Sweden. The Kravtsovskoe oil field is located on the shelf northwest of the unique natural object, the Curonian Spit. The detected weak earthquakes are likely to be anthropogenic, induced by reservoir pressure disturbances as a result of intensive hydrocarbon production, and are probably precursors of a strong man-made earthquake. The results of new local seismic observations in the Laptev Sea obtained using ocean bottom seismographs were compared with actual data from global and regional earthquake catalogs. Most earthquake epicenters on the Laptev Sea shelf are grouped into several clusters located within the East Laptev province of horsts and grabens and enclosed between two extension detachments. The first one marks the eastern boundary of the Ust–Lena and Omoloi rift systems, and the second one is the eastern boundary of the Anisin, Zarya, and Belkovskii-Svyatoi Nos rift chains. At the same time, the linear zone of epicenters confined to the Gakkel Ridge, when moving to the shelf, shifts along the Khatanga–Lomonosov fault zone to the northeast in the direction of the second extension detachment, which probably remains the only active one. The spatial distribution of earthquakes in the Laptev Sea, taking into account the epicenters of micro- and weak seismic events on the shelf, does not have sufficiently clear boundaries that determine the contours of the previously assumed lithospheric microplate. This paper is a review of current concepts concerning the seismotectonics and seismicity in the Laptev Sea region. The chief feature of the region is a rift system extending in the shelf from the continental slope with the adjacent Gakkel Ridge to the mainland coast. There are several models to describe the present-day evolution of the region, but no one of these is preferable because of the lack of local instrumental observations of shelf microseismicity, while such microseismicity is characteristic of rift zones. One alternative approach consists in the installation of ocean bottom seismometers on the shelf itself. During the 73rd cruise of the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh, a temporary network was deployed consisting of 7 broadband bottom seismic stations on the Laptev Sea shelf. Comparative analysis of noise spectra based on records of a hydrophone, a bottom seismograph, and a wavegauge, showed that the noise amplitude strongly depends on wind waves, which is in turn dependent on marine ice cover, so that the recording potential of a local network of bottom seismographs is restricted to the winter period of observation. Seismic hazard assessment is done for oil field areas in the North Caspian region by a method earlier successfully applied to other areas. The method involves general seismic zoning data, available regional databases on recurrence of seismic shaking, known models of ground motion attenuation in seismoactive regions, and data on geological and geophysical surveys in the studied area. The assigned level of seismic hazard of the region is refined using probabilistic analysis; additionally, disaggregation is made and accelerograms are synthesized (the latter are necessary for seismic microzoning of particular sites using the numerical nonlinear analysis of ground seismic response). The amplitude and spectral characteristics of ground motions are obtained which are necessary for seismic resistance design and construction of petroleum industry objects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The data on foreshocks and aftershocks of the strongest earthquakes occurred in the area of Kuril island arc on November 15, 2006 ( M = 8.3) and January 13, 2007 ( M = 8.1) are compared. In 2006, two months before the catastrophic earthquake in November, the detailed seismological investigations were carried out with the use of bottom stations in the area of seismic gap in the Central Kuril arc. The maps of epicenters and vertical cross sections for the equal time intervals are compared. The clear difference between distributions of hypocenters in the periods of foreshocks and aftershocks is revealed. Earthquakes were not distributed within the limits of the seismoactive block in the Kuril arc during the foreshocks period; instead, boundaries of seismoactive zone abruptly narrowed and hypocenters concentrated largely within the Benioff zone. The results of detailed seismological observations with bottom seismographs in the Central Kurile segment in August-September, 2006 are discussed. The system of six bottom seismographs was placed on the island slope of the Kurile deep-sea trench southeast of Urup Island and southwest of the Bussol Strait. Over 230 earthquakes with M LH = 0.5–5.5 were registered in the area with a radius of 150 km around the center of the observation system at depths up to 300 km during 16 days. Records of 80 earthquakes with hypocenters in the earth crust ( h = 0–30 km) beneath the island slope of the Kurile deep-sea trench were first obtained by bottom seismographs. These data are inconsistent with previous concepts of aseismicity of this zone. The discovery of the unique morphological structure of the Benioff zone beneath the central Kurile Arc represents the most important result of detailed seismological observations. The zone consists of an inner seismoactive subzone, which is located beneath the island slope of the arc at depths of 15–210 km, being characterized by an angle of incline of 50° under the latter and crosses the ocean bottom approximately 80 km away from the trench axis, and outer low-activity subzone. The latter is traceable beyond the trench almost parallel to the inner zone beginning from a depth of 50 km below the sea bottom up to a depth of approximately 300 km. Due to the slightly lower incline (∼45°) of the outer subzone, both subzones gradually converge downward. The integral thickness of the Benioff zone varies from 150 km in its upper part to 125 km at depths of 210–260 km. The medium sandwiched between these subzones is practically aseismic. The reality of this defined structure is confirmed by the distribution of aftershocks of the earthquake that occurred on November 15, 2006 ( M = 8.3). These seismic events served as foreshocks for the subsequent strong earthquake of January 13, 2007 ( M = 8.1) with the hypocenter located beyond the trench under the ocean bottom. Such a structure of this zone within the central Kurile Arc segment is unique, having no analogues either in the flanks of the Kurile-Kamchatka Arc or other arcs. The results of detailed seismological observations obtained two months before the first of the catastrophic Central Kurile earthquakes appeared to be typical for the period of foreshocks (the lower seismic activity of the Simushir block, which hosted the hypocenter of the earthquake that occurred on November 15, 2006, particularly at depths of 0–50 km, the gentler incline of the recurrence plot, and other features). During Cruise 20–3 of the R/V Rift (April, 2006), the area that includes the shelf and slope of the Derbent Basin in the northern Middle Caspian was studied using the continuous seismoacoustic profiling method. In accordance with the previous standpoint, two Pleistocene deltaic complexes formed in the Enotaevian and Mangyshlakian time are defined in this area. The seismoacoustic records obtained for the northern slope of the Derbent Basin demonstrate the development of specific rootless exogenic-gravitational fold structures in the upper (∼150–200 m) Quaternary part of the sedimentary sequence. The Quaternary section encloses angular unconformities indicating the pulsating mode of gravitational processes in the northern slope of the basin. South-dipping gravitational normal faults (and/or normal fault-related flexures) displacing the bottom surface and uppermost sedimentary layers (with vertical amplitudes up to 5–6 m) were defined in the southern part of the study area. Several impulses of the submarine slump structures predated and accompanied the deposition of the upper deltaic sequence (Mangyshlakian), although their most intense formation took place later during the Novocaspian (Holocene) time. Thus, the structural analysis of the seismoacoustic data revealed intense development of different-origin and different-age gravitational structures within the Quaternary sediments in the northern slope of the Derbent Basin. These results should be taken into consideration when designing, building, and operating submarine constructions in order to prevent potential natural hazards and reduce their consequences. The results of detailed seismological observations with bottom recording systems carried out in 2004 and 2006 near the Dagestan coast of the Middle Caspian are considered. The records of more than 550 micro- and weak earthquakes with ML = 0.1–4.7 (MLH = −0.7 to 4.3) were obtained during 165 days of recording; a fifth of these earthquakes occurred in the upper mantle at a depth of 50–200 km. Over the entire period of instrumental recording since the 1930s, only 10 mantle earthquakes with MLH = 3.5−6.3 have been recorded by on-land systems. The highest density of earthquake epicenters with source depths down to 50 km is established on the Middle Caspian coast between Derbent and Izberbash and in the adjacent water area. The mantle earthquakes with hypocenters at a depth of 60–80 km cluster beneath the western wall of the Derbent Basin, whereas deeper hypocenters are located beneath both the wall of this basin and the Middle Caspian coast. The sporadic mantle earthquakes recorded in 2004 (about 30 shocks), determined by a network of systems with a small aperture, depicted a zone plunging beneath the Greater Caucasus with indications of a peculiar “subduction” of the Scythian Plate beneath the Caucasus. Subsequent observations based on a more extensive network were carried out in 2006. They substantially changed the pattern of mantle earthquake hypocenters. According to this evidence, the sources of mantle earthquakes make up a dispersed cloud extended in the vertical direction beneath the Middle Caspian coast and water area, which may be regarded as a relic of tectonic activity of a bygone tectonic epoch. This paper reports the results from a study on earthquake hazard assessment for the northwestern part (until now considered to have been a low seismicity area) of the northern Caspian Sea around Morskoi Ivan-Karaul Island where oil-producing facilities are to be built. This earthquake hazard assessment is based on the traditional approach by analysis and summary of geological and geophysical data (primarily fault tectonics and geophysical fields). Seismic microzonation was carried out by the dynamic method based on the comparison of ground motion spectral amplitudes at a reference site and at other sites in the water area of interest. The basic data were records of aftershocks of teleseismic events made by OBSs. The experiment in dynamic microzonation turned out to be unique, in the sense that it was conducted in very shallow water (1–5 m), where the level of seismic noise is affected, not only by currents, but also by sea waves. We stress the importance of seismic monitoring during the operation period of the oil-gas facilities to provide checks on the technological process and to ensure the ecological safety of the environment. In 2006–2007, researchers of the IO RAS conducted seismological observations in the Baltic Sea and western Kaliningrad region with the use of ocean-bottom and land-based autonomous seismic stations. According to maps of general seismic zoning of the territory of Russia, the Kaliningrad region is aseismic. However, a series of seismic phenomena with magnitudes of about 5 and sources located near the Bay of Gdansk coast occurred here in September 2004. The total duration of the IO RAS seismological observations in five areas of the region under investigation was more than 200 days. The analysis of seismic records of the IO RAS network located sources of two local weak earthquakes with magnitudes M L = 3.4–3.5, which indicates that the seismic process in the western part of the Kaliningrad region continues and the region is far from being seismically stable. The results of gas geochemical and seismoacoustic measurements obtained in the course of the expedition for the studies of gas seepages at the Anapa shelf of the Black Sea are presented. According to the data of the gas survey in the surface waters of the Anapa shelf, a large methane anomaly was discovered and mapped. The correlation of the anomaly with the bottom sources located over the Pionerskaya structure is proved. The geological structure of the area studied is analyzed. The data set allowed us to positively characterize the prospects of the oil-and-gas content of the Anapa shelf interiors and of the Pionerskaya structure proper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Short-term (three months) bottom seismic observations in the area of the Yalam-Samur structure in the Middle Caspian Basin revealed a deep-seated compact zone of mantle-earthquake sources that dips beneath the southeastern Caucasus. To a first approximation, this zone may be interpreted as a seismofocal layer that characterizes thrusting of the Turan Plate under the southeastern Caucasus. However, the obtained spatial distribution of sources of microearthquakes and weak earthquakes is insufficiently reliable owing to the low aperture of the observation network of bottom seismographs. More reliable data on the position and parameters of the seismofocal layer could be obtained by the observation network with a wider spread of bottom seismographs (up to 50–100 km). If this result is confirmed, the current concept of interaction between the Alpine structures of the southeastern Caucasus, Turan, and South Caspian plates should probably be revised. Vaginitis, a prevalent gynecological condition in women, is mainly caused by an imbalance in the vaginal micro-ecology. The two most common types of vaginitis are vaginal bacteriosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis, triggered by the virulent Gardnerella vaginalis and Candida albicans, respectively. In this study, a strain capable of inhibiting G. vaginalis and C. albicans was screened from vaginal secretions and identified as Lactobacillus gasseri based on 16S rRNA sequences. The strain, named L. gasseri VHProbi E09, could inhibit the growth of G. vaginalis and C. albicans under co-culture conditions by 99.07% ± 0.26% and 99.95% ± 0.01%, respectively. In addition, it could significantly inhibit the adhesion of these pathogens to vaginal epithelial cells. The strain further showed the ability to inhibit the enteropathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli and Salmonella enteritidis, to tolerate artificial gastric and intestinal fluids and to adhere to intestinal Caco-2 cells. These results suggest that L. gasseri VHProbi E09 holds promise for clinical trials and animal studies whether administered orally or directly into the vagina. Whole-genome analysis also revealed a genome consisting of 1752 genes for L. gasseri VHProbi E09, with subsequent analyses identifying seven genes related to adhesion and three genes related to bacteriocins. These adhesion- and bacteriocin-related genes provide a theoretical basis for understanding the mechanism of bacterial inhibition of the strain. The research conducted in this study suggests that L. gasseri VHProbi E09 may be considered as a potential probiotic, and further research can delve deeper into its efficacy as an agent which can restore a healthy vaginal ecosystem. Background: This study aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic anatomical left hemihepatectomy guided by the middle hepatic vein (MHV) for the treatment of patients with hepatolithiasis who had a history of upper abdominal surgery. Methods: Retrospective data analysis was performed on patients who underwent laparoscopic left hepatectomy for hepatolithiasis and with previous upper abdominal surgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from January 2018 to April 2022. According to the different surgical approaches, patients were divided into laparoscopic anatomical left hepatectomy guided by the MHV group (MHV-AH group) and laparoscopic traditional anatomical left hepatectomy not guided by the MHV group (non-MHV-AH group). Results: This study included 81 patients, with 37 and 44 patients in the MHV-AH and non-MHV-AH groups, respectively. There was no significant difference in the basic information between the two groups. Five cases were converted to laparotomy, and the remaining were successfully completed under laparoscopy. Compared to the non-MHV-AH group, the MHV-AH group had a slightly longer operation time (319.30 min vs 273.93 min, P = 0.032), lower bile leakage rate (5.4% vs 20.5%, P = 0.047), stone residual rate (2.7% vs 20.5%, P = 0.015), stone recurrence rate (5.4% vs 22.7%, P = 0.028), and cholangitis recurrence rate (2.7% vs 22.7%, P = 0.008).There were no significant differences in the results of other observation indices between the groups. Conclusions: Laparoscopic anatomical left hepatectomy guided by the MHV is safe and effective in the treatment of left hepatolithiasis with a history of upper abdominal surgery. It does not increase intraoperative bleeding and reduces the risk of postoperative bile leakage, residual stones, stone recurrence, and cholangitis recurrence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present data on the taxonomic diversity and structure of macroinvertebrate communities in small, mostly 1st and 2nd order permanent streams from Struma, Mesta and Vardar watersheds (7th Ecoregion "Eastern Balkans") and analyse similarity in communities between/within studied basins. We reveal the characteristic elements of the macrozoobenthos from representative sites of R3- (mountainous) and R5- (semi-mountainous) river types. In total 69 samples from 38 sites were collected in autumn 2017 and spring 2018. The variation of the number of taxa, total abundance, relative abundance, species diversity and richness, evenness and index of dominance were analysed. A total of 280 taxa were recorded, and insects dominated the macroinvertebrate communities (> 70%). Overall, site similarities reflected the key macroinvertebrate metacommunities in R3- and R5-river type sections that provided higher β-diversity and lower similarities compared to the remainder of the watersheds. MDS- and dbRDA analyses separated the river basins by stream size and substratum heterogeneity. The highest α- and β-diversity were recorded within the Struma River watershed, which contributed to the higher γ-diversity and reflected the typical macroinvertebrate assemblages from the studied rivers of this Ecoregion. Knowledge of the explicit mechanisms of charge transport is preeminent for a fundamental understanding of the metal-to-insulator transition in ABO3-type perovskite rare-earth nickelates and for potential applications of these technologically promising materials. Here we suggest that owing to intrinsic Jahn–Teller-driven carrier localization, small-polaron transport is innate in nickelates. We demonstrate experimental evidence for such transport by investigating AC conductivity over a broad range of temperatures and frequencies in epitaxial SmNiO3 films. We reveal the hopping mechanism of conductivity, Holstein-type activation energy for hopping, nonclassical relaxation behavior, and nonclassical consistency between activation and relaxation. By analyzing these observations, we validate small-polaron transport. We anticipate that our findings can lead to precise tailoring of the DC and AC conductivity in nickelates as requested for fruitful employment of these materials. Purpose of Review: Antibiotic-sparing therapies to treat and prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are needed. Interest surrounds the question of whether bacterial vaginosis (BV) enhances susceptibility to urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women, and, whether, by extension, the vaginal microbiota could serve as a therapeutic target for UTI prevention. In this review, we outline research on the relationship between BV and the vaginal microbiota, associations between BV and UTI risk, plausible mechanisms, future directions, and finally clinical take home messages for providers. Recent Findings: An optimal vaginal microbiota is dominated by protective Lactobacillus spp. BV represents a disorder of the vaginal microbiota marked by decreased lactobacilli and increases in a variety of anaerobic bacteria. Limited epidemiologic data link BV to an increased risk of UTI, whereas vaginal lactobacilli may be protective against UTI. Multiple plausible mechanisms, mainly involving the ability of lactobacilli to inhibit uropathogens' growth, adhesion, and virulence factors, may explain associations between BV, the vaginal microbiota, and UTIs. However, substantial research gaps remain. Summary: Currently there are insufficient data to support treatment of BV (e.g., via antibiotics or live biotherapeutic drugs) to prevent UTI. Purpose: Physical examination, laboratory tests, ultrasound, conventional radiography, multislice computed tomography (MSCT), and diagnostic laparoscopy are used for diagnosing blunt abdominal trauma. In this article, we investigate and evaluate the usefulness and limitations of various diagnostic modalities on the basis of a comprehensive review of the literature. Methods: We searched commonly used databases in order to obtain information about the aforementioned diagnostic modalities. Relevant articles were included in the literature review. On the basis of the results of our comprehensive analysis of the literature and a current case, we offer a diagnostic algorithm. Results: A total of 86 studies were included in the review. Ecchymosis of the abdominal wall (seat belt sign) is a clinical sign that has a high predictive value. Laboratory values such as those for haematocrit, haemoglobin, base excess or deficit, and international normalised ratio (INR) are prognostic parameters that are useful in guiding therapy. Extended focused assessment with sonography for trauma (eFAST) has become a well established component of the trauma room algorithm but is of limited usefulness in the diagnosis of blunt abdominal trauma. Compared with all other diagnostic modalities, MSCT has the highest sensitivity and specificity. Diagnostic laparoscopy is an invasive technique that may also serve as a therapeutic tool and is particularly suited for haemodynamically stable patients with suspected hollow viscus injuries. Conclusions: MSCT is the gold standard diagnostic modality for blunt abdominal trauma because of its high sensitivity and specificity in detecting relevant intra-abdominal injuries. In many cases, however, clinical, laboratory and imaging findings must be interpreted jointly for an adequate evaluation of a patient's injuries and for treatment planning since these data supplement and complement one another. Patients with blunt abdominal trauma should be admitted for clinical observation over a minimum period of 24 h since there is no investigation that can reliably rule out intra-abdominal injuries. The recording of seismic signals at the bottom of water areas is in most cases accompanied by intense noise, whose sources are near-bottom currents. An effective way has still not been found to combat this phenomenon, which significantly impedes the development of a marine seismological network. The main problems are that such interference is generated both on equipment elements, which, according to the operating conditions, should be on the bottom surface, and on the unevenness of the bottom surface. In this study, a number of mechanisms for exciting such interference are considered, including due to the direct impact of stationary and nonstationary flows on the sensitive elements of bottom seismographs and due to the generation of seismoacoustic fields in the aquatic environment during vortex and turbulent flows. The results of recording seismic signals on the bottom, in the sediment layer, and in the bottom borehole in the presence of intense noise from currents are compared. The article compares the results and estimation of the application conditions of seismic microzoning (SMZ) by numerical and instrumental methods for sites characterized by relatively small horizontal heterogeneity of the structure and properties of the soil strata. The results of applying the instrumental method for recording microseisms (Nakamura method) and calculation methods the of seismic stiffness and spectral transfer functions for SMZ of Oktyabrsky Island in Kaliningrad, Kaliningrad oblast were investigated. It is shown that the used SMZ methods yielded consistent results, differing mainly in the degree of detail and completeness of information. The results of the instrumental method for recording microseisms are characterized by the greatest detail and contain the most complete real, rather than model-calculated, frequency response of the expected seismic shaking. It is concluded that for weakly seismic areas with layered soil strata rather similar in structure to a horizontally homogeneous model, the choice of SMZ methods should be substantiated by the degree of importance of structures projected on the territory and, therefore, by the necessary amount of information on the frequency response of the expected vibrations and required site distribution details in seismic intensity increments. Crystal structure, and magnetic and dielectric properties were studied in Ti-doped YFeO3 polycrystalline samples. The crystal structure and chemical state of the Fe/Ti cations were characterized by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is found that a narrow solid-solubility limit is achieved (~ 6%) and the d0–ness of Ti4+ is not favored in the YFeO3 matrix. A change in the valence states of Fe and Ti cations explains not only the low solubility limit but also the anomalous increase of the volume cell. Soft magnetic hysteresis curves in the M vs H curves indicate that the weak ferromagnetic contribution prevails for all the studied samples. Furthermore, by means of differential calorimetry (DSC) it was possible to identify the AFM transition which decreases with increasing Ti content. On the other hand, the change of the step-like anomaly to a broad peak in the permittivity (ε′) and loss tangent (tan δ) as Ti content increases resemble to a relaxor ferroelectric transition. The endothermic peak (DSC) around the magnetic transition and the broad peaks in the ε′(T) data seem to indicate the existence of a local polarization coupled with AFM transition at ~ 650 K. Two types of charge carriers were found in the doped systems, oxygen vacancies at high temperatures, and small polarons at low temperatures, respectively. Besides, it is found that the introduction of those charge carriers in the YFeO3 matrix occurs by the change of oxidation state from Fe3+ to Fe2+ through Ti3+. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lactobacilli are a part of the human microbiome in healthy humans. Studies of their physiological and genetic characteristics are the basis for their use in probiotic preparations. This report is a brief description of the helveticin gene found in two Lactobacillus crispatus strains, which are a part of the human microbiome. Our analysis showed that the two variants of the gene are not solely characteristic of strains isolated from humans. In the phylogenetic analysis, we found that the studied sequence (this gene) showed a significant difference between the species of the genus Lactobacillus and could be used as a phylogenetic marker. The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors and pregnancy outcomes for aerobic vaginitis (AV) in late pregnancy. A total of 624 pregnant women who were treated in the perinatal unit at Tianjin Medical University General Hospital and 365 nonpregnant women who were evaluated at a health management center from January 2015 to June 2016 were recruited for this case-control study. A questionnaire covering personal hygiene habits and sociodemographic factors was administered to pregnant women to analyze risk factors for AV. Bacterial vaginosis, AV, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and Trichomonas vaginitis were scored according to standardized definitions. Pregnancy outcomes were followed up and recorded. The chi-square test and univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used for statistical evaluation. The prevalence of vaginal infection in pregnant and nonpregnant women were 27.9% and 15.3%, respectively (P < 0.05). AV was identified more frequently in pregnant women than in nonpregnant women (4.2% vs. 1.4%; P < 0.05). A history of vaginal infection within 1 year (odds ratio [OR] = 3.219, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.103-9.346) and external hemorrhoids (OR = 11.233, 95% CI 4.647-27.155) were independent risk factors for AV during pregnancy. A higher incidence of premature rupture of membranes (PROM) was significantly associated with AV (P < 0.05). AV is common in late pregnancy. The regularities in the radiation and propagation of seismic waves within the Baikal Rift Zone in Buryatia are studied to estimate the ground motion parameters from the probable future strong earthquakes. The regional parameters of seismic radiation and propagation are estimated by the stochastic simulation (which provides the closest agreement between the calculations and observations) of the acceleration time histories of the earthquakes recorded by the Ulan-Ude seismic station. The acceleration time histories of the strongest earthquakes ( M ~ 3.4-4.8) that occurred in 2006-2011 at the epicentral distances of ~96-125 km and had source depths of ~8-12 km have been modeled. The calculations are conducted with estimates of the Q-factor which were previously obtained for the region. The frequency-dependent attenuation and geometrical spreading are estimated from the data on the deep structure of the crust and upper mantle (velocity sections) in the Ulan-Ude region, and the parameters determining the wave forms and duration of acceleration time histories are found by fitting. These parameters fairly well describe all the considered earthquakes. The Ulan-Ude station can be considered as the reference bedrock station with minimum local effects. The obtained estimates for the parameters of seismic radiation and propagation can be used for forecasting the ground motion from the future strong earthquakes and for constructing the seismic zoning maps for Buryatia. Purpose: Vaginal microecological environment is an important factor of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC). This study was undertaken to investigate dynamic changes of vaginal microecosystem in patients with RVVC.Methods: Four hundred patients with VVC and 400 healthy women of reproductive age who admitted to the hospital from January 2012 to December 2013 were evaluated retrospectively. Vaginal microecological factors were evaluated before and after treatment until no recurrence, including vaginal cleanliness, white blood cells, Lactobacillus, Lactobacillus classification, bacteria density, flora diversity, Nugent scores, etc. The grouping was done according to the recurrence of the disease. Every time after treatment, the relapsing patients were defined as case group and the cured patients without recurrence were defined as control group. The differences in the results between the case and the control groups were analyzed by t test.Results: With the development of RVVC, the ages of all case groups were lower than the corresponding control groups. In different stages of the disease, the bacteria density of the case groups and their corresponding control groups had no significant difference (P > 0.05). Most of the microecological indicators of the first occurring group were significantly different (P < 0.05) from that of the control group. In the recurrence groups, only a few indicators were significantly different from the control groups. The values of all vaginal microecological indicators (except Lactobacillus) of all case groups were higher than that of the control groups. The values of Lactobacillus of all RVVC case groups were lower than that of the RVVC control groups.Conclusions: There were vaginal microecological imbalances in all developing stages of RVVC. As for vaginal flora, diverse sorts changed to normal Lactobacillus dominantly with the development of RVVC. The results on synthesis, crystal structure determination and calculation of crystallochemical parameters of YCoFeO ( x = 0, 0.33, 0.5, 0.67 and 1) perovskites are presented in this work. The compounds within this series were synthesized by solution combustion method using two different fuels: urea and citric acid. It was found that iron-containing perovskites, obtained by citric acid as a fuel are of better quality and crystallinity. All the compounds crystallize in Pnma space group with Z= 4. According to the structure and the calculated crystallochemical parameters, the coordination number of Y in these perovskites is 8. The unit cell parameter relationship is of O−type suggesting that the main reason for distortion of ideal perovskite structure is the octahedral tilting. The deformation of the octahedrons, as well as the tilting angles, are increasing with the increasing content of Fe but the calculated global instability indices ( GII) show that the stability of the perovskite structure is increasing with increasing of the Fe content. The high rate of vaginal Candida albicans recurrence is attributed to azole resistance rates as high as 15 %. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical and microbiological efficacy of standard azole therapy for treatment of vaginal C. albicans infection alone and in combination with local probiotic as well as the effects on vaginal microbiota. This study included 436 women with vaginal candidiasis randomly assigned to two treatment groups. The first group, with 207 patients (12 dropouts), was administered 150 mg fluconazole and a single vaginal globule of fenticonazole (600 mg) on the same day. The second group of 209 patients (8 dropouts) followed the same treatment schedule; however, ten applications of a vaginal probiotic containing Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, Streptococcus thermophilus, and L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus were also administered beginning the fifth day after azole treatment. Microbiological analysis of the therapy efficacy in the first treatment group showed C. albicans resistance in over 30 % of patients. Clinical complaints persisted after treatment administration in 79.7 % ( n = 165) of women in this group. Clinical complaints in the second group decreased to 31.1 % ( n = 65) and microbiological efficacy also improved among investigated parameters, from 93.7 % ( n = 193) to 95.2 % ( n = 198). The local application of probiotics after administration of combined azoles for treatment of vaginal C. albicans infections increases therapy efficacy and could prevent relapse. Microseismic sounding along the profile in the Ossetian sector of the Greater Caucasus revealed two domains with characteristic properties and morphology deep beneath the mountain system. One subvertical domain is marked with low velocities and the other, also subvertical, has high velocities. The high-velocity zone is largely located beneath the northern limb and axial part of the Greater Caucasus mega-anticlinorium, whereas the low velocity zone projects on the southern limb. Almost throughout the entire structure of the block part of the northern limb of mega-anticlinorium, the top of the high-velocity zone beneath it is consistently horizontal at a depth of ∼10 km. This pattern is violated by the apparent steep rise of the top of the high-velocity zone to the surface in the southern direction, which starts approximately from the main thrust. Beneath the southern limb, the top boundary can also be guessed at a depth of ∼10 km, although less reliably. The roots of the low-velocity zone stretch to a depth of ∼50-60 km and narrow with the depth. The weak regional seismicity quite distinctly maps onto the high-velocity zone. In the depth interval of 10 to 25 km, weak seismicity abruptly drops northwards at the transition to the low-velocity zone. The independent magnetotelluric data show that electric resistivity of the low-velocity zone significantly exceeds the resistivity of the hosting rocks. The model of a medium filled with isolated fractures with mineralized fluid is suggested for the low-velocity zone. According to a series of features, the low-velocity zone tends to float up; in particular, there is a high lateral correlation between the most elevated part of the mountain relief, morphology, and age of the rocks, on one hand, and the position of the low-velocity zone, on the other hand. Accurate knowledge of the composition and ecology of vaginal microbial environment of a healthy woman is necessary for the understanding of normal flora and how to reduce the risk for diseases. Vagina and its microflora form a balanced ecosystem in which dominated bacteria are vaginal lactobacilli. There are dynamic changes in this ecosystem having structure and composition depending on many factors. The term dysbacteriosis defines any movement outside the normal range for the given biotope of obligate and/or facultative microflora. Such a change in the quantity and quality of the respective microbial balance is fraught with danger and requires correction and recovery. The purpose of this overview is to examine obstetric and gynecological diseases that can cause vaginal impaired microbial balance. Vaginal dysbacteriosis is a cause, predecessor, and often also consequence of vaginal infections. In essence, any vaginal infection can be seen as dysbacteriosis, developed to the most severe extent. Here, there is a dominant microorganism other than lactic acid bacteria in the vagina (clinically manifested or not, respectively), depletion of defense mechanisms of the vagina associated with the shift of lactobacilli from their dominant role in the vaginal balance, decrease in their number and species diversity, and a resulting change in the healthy status of the vagina. Vaginal dysbacteriosis can be found in pathogenetic mechanism, whereby many obstetric and gynecological diseases develop. Most of these diseases lead directly to increased maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, so it is important to understand the reasons for them and the arrangements for their prevention. The territory of Lithuania and adjacent areas of the East European Craton have always been considered a region of low seismicity. Two recent earthquakes with magnitudes of more than 5 in the Kaliningrad District (Russian Federation) on 21 September 2004 motivated re-evaluation of the seismic hazard in Lithuania and adjacent territories. A new opportunity to study seismicity in the region is provided by the PASSEQ (Pasive Seismic Experiment) project that aimed to study the lithosphere-asthenosphere structure around the Trans-European Suture Zone. Twenty-six seismic stations of the PASSEQ temporary seismic array were installed in the territory of Lithuania. The stations recorded a number of local and regional seismic events originating from Lithuania and adjacent areas. This data can be used to answer the question of whether there exist seismically active tectonic zones in Lithuania that could be potentially hazardous for critical industrial facilities. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to find any natural tectonic seismic events in Lithuania and to obtain more general view of seismicity in the region. In order to do this, we make a manual review of the continuous data recorded by the PASSEQ seismic stations in Lithuania. From the good quality data, we select and relocate 45 local seismic events using the well-known LocSAT and VELEST location algortithms. In order to discriminate between possible natural events, underwater explosions and on-shore blasts, we analyse spatial distribution of epicenters and temporal distribution of origin times and perform both visual analysis of waveforms and spectral analysis of recordings. We show that the relocated seismic events can be grouped into five clusters (groups) according to their epicenter coordinates and origin and that several seismic events might be of tectonic origin. We also show that several events from the off-shore region in the Baltic Sea (at the coasts of the Kaliningrad District of the Russian Federation) are non-volcanic tremors, although the origin of these tremor-type events is not clear. The thermal decomposition of Y[Fe(CN)]·4HO has been studied in order to investigate the formation of the multi-ferroic oxide YFeO. The starting material (Y[Fe(CN)]·4HO) and the decomposition products were characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD), and scanning electron microscopy. Metastable YFeO with hexagonal structure, space group P6/ mmc, was obtained by thermal decomposition of Y[Fe(CN)]·4HO at 600 °C in air. Orthorhombic YFeO was obtained by the same method at T ≥ 800 °C in air. The crystal structure of orthorhombic YFeO was refined by Rietveld analysis using PXRD data. We found that it was slightly deficient in Y, which is in agreement with the small amount of YO found as impurity in the sample. The formula of the orthorhombic phase is YFeO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Papazachos and Papaioannou (1997) (called PP97 hereinafter) studied the macroseismic field in the Balkan area (Greece, Albania, former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and western Turkey) with the purpose of deriving attenuation and scaling relations useful for seismic hazard assessment and study of historical earthquakes. In his comment, Trifunac suggests that our analysis might exhibit certain bias for all countries except Greece due to problems mainly associated with the database (completeness, etc.), conversion of local intensity scales used in the Balkan countries, as well as to the local variations of the attenuation relation due to the variation of the geotectonic environment in this area. Specifically, his most important comments can be summarized as follows: a) The large participation of Greek data probably biased the scaling relations proposed in the study. b) The conversion relations used between local macroseismic scales are less accurate than their proposed such relations. c) The variation of attenuation (geometrical and anelastic) in different regions of the study area is important and local relations (instead of the proposed single relation) should be determined for seismic hazard assessment. In the following, we study in detail each of these possible bias sources. Additional work on the macroseismic field of the Balkan area shows that none of the previously described factors, suggested by Trifunac, introduces bias in the results presented by PP97. Specifically, it is shown that the database used by PP97 fulfills the basic requirements for a reliable determinations of attenuation and scaling relations proper for seismic hazard assessment in all five countries of this area. Evidence is presented that no strong geographical variation of the attenuation of macroseismic intensities of shallow earthquakes is observed. Relations between local version of intensity scales suggested by Shebalin et al. (1974) are shown to be reliable. Finally, it is demonstrated that national practices for estimation of macroseismic intensities may affect the results of seismic hazard assessment but proper formulation can be applied (PP97) which allows to take into account such differences in national practices. GYNOPHILUS (Lcr REGENERANS) is a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) aimed at restoring the vaginal microbiome and contains the live biotherapeutic microorganism Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lcr35. In this study, the LBP formulation and manufacturing process significantly enhanced the anti-Candida activity of L. rhamnosus Lcr35, with a complete loss of viability of the yeast after 48 h of coincubation. Sodium thiosulfate (STS), one excipient of the product, was used as a potentiator of the anti-Candida spp. activity of Lactobacilli. This contact-independent phenomenon induced fungal cell disturbances, as observed by electron microscopy observations. Nonverbal sensory experiments showed clear odor dissimilarities between cocultures of L. rhamnosus Lcr35 and C. albicans in the presence and absence of STS, suggesting an impact of odor-active metabolites. A volatolomic approach allowed the identification of six odor-active compounds, including one sulfur compound that was identified as S-methyl thioacetate (MTA). MTA was associated with the antifungal effect of Lcr35, and its functional link was established in vitro. We show for the first time that the LBP GYNOPHILUS, which is a highly active product in the reduction of vulvovaginal candidiasis, requires the presence of a sulfur compound to fully achieve its antifungal effect.
