Objectives: To analyze the characteristics of spinal metastasis in CT scans across diverse cancers for effective diagnosis and treatment, using MRI as the gold standard. Methods: A retrospective study of 309 patients from four centers, who underwent concurrent CT and spinal MRI, revealing spinal metastasis, was conducted. Data on metastasis including total number, volume, visibility on CT (visible, indeterminate, or invisible), and type of bone change were collected. Through chi-square and Mann–Whitney U tests, we characterized the metastasis across diverse cancers and investigated the variation in the intra-individual ratio representing the percentage of lesions within each category for each patient. Results: Out of 3333 spinal metastases from 309 patients, 55% were visible, 21% indeterminate, and 24% invisible. Sclerotic and lytic lesions made up 47% and 43% of the visible and indeterminate categories, respectively. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), prostate cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) had the highest visibility at 86%, 73%, and 67% (p < 0.0001, p < 0.0001, and p = 0.003), while pancreatic cancer was lowest at 29% (p < 0.0001). RCC and HCC had significantly high lytic metastasis ratios (interquartile range (IQR) 0.96–1.0 and 0.31–1.0, p < 0.001 and p = 0.005). Prostate cancer exhibited a high sclerotic lesion ratio (IQR 0.52–0.97, p < 0.001). About 39% of individuals had invisible or indeterminate lesions, even with a single visible lesion on CT. The intra-individual ratio for indeterminate and invisible metastases surpassed 18%, regardless of the maximal size of the visible metastasis. Desertification is known to be a major threat to biodiversity, yet our understanding of the consequent decline in biodiversity remains insufficient. Here, we predicted climate change-induced range shifts and genetic diversity losses in three model dung beetles: Colobopterus erraticus, Cheironitis eumenes, and Gymnopleurus mopsus, distributed across the Gobi Desert and Mongolian Steppe, areas known for desertification. Phylogeographic analyses of mitochondrial COI sequences and species distribution modeling, based on extensive field investigations spanning 14 years, were performed. Species confined to a single biome were predicted to contract and shift their distribution in response to climate change, whereas widespread species was predicted to expand even if affected by range shifts. We indicated that all species are expected to experience significant haplotype losses, yet the presence of high singleton frequencies and low genetic divergence across geographic configurations and lineages mitigate loss of genetic diversity. Notably, Cheironitis eumenes, a desert species with low genetic diversity, appears to be the most vulnerable to climate change due to the extensive degradation in the Gobi Desert. This is the first study to predict the response of insects to desertification in the Gobi Desert. Our findings highlight that dung beetles in the Gobi Desert and Mongolian Steppe might experience high rates of occupancy turnover and genetic loss, which could reshuffle the species composition. Observational studies have shown controversial associations between alcohol intake and radiographic osteoarthritis (OA). This study investigated whether this association was causal using a Mendelian randomization (MR) study in a population-based cohort in Korean. The study enrolled 2429 subjects (1058 men, 1371 women) from the Dong-gu Study. X-rays of the hand and knee joints were scored using a semi-quantitative grading system to calculate the total score of the hand and knee joints. ALDH2 rs671 genotyping was performed by high-resolution melting analysis. MR instrumental variable analysis and observational multivariable regression analysis were used to estimate the association between genetically predicted alcohol intake and the radiographic severity of OA. Subjects with the G/G genotype had a higher current alcohol intake than those with the G/A and A/A genotypes in both men and women (all P < 0.001). Men with the G/G genotype had higher total knee (P < 0.001) and hand scores (P = 0.042) compared to those with the G/A and A/A genotypes after adjusting for age and body mass index, but not in women. In the observational multivariable regression analysis, each alcohol drink per day in men was associated with increased knee (P = 0.001) and hand joint scores (P = 0.013) after adjustment, but not in women. In our MR analysis, utilizing ALDH2 rs671 genotypes as instrumental variables for alcohol consumption, has shown a significant link between each additional daily alcohol drink and increased radiographic joint severity in men. Device engineering based on computer-aided simulations is essential to make silicon (Si) quantum bits (qubits) be competitive to commercial platforms based on superconductors and trapped ions. Combining device simulations with the Bayesian optimization (BO), here we propose a systematic design approach that is quite useful to procure fast and precise entangling operations of qubits encoded to electron spins in electrode-driven Si quantum dot (QD) systems. For a target problem of the controlled-X (CNOT) logic operation, we employ BO with the Gaussian process regression to evolve design factors of a Si double QD system to the ones that are optimal in terms of speed and fidelity of a CNOT logic driven by a single microwave pulse. The design framework not only clearly contributes to cost-efficient securing of solutions that enhance performance of the target quantum operation, but can be extended to implement more complicated logics with Si QD structures in experimentally unprecedented ways. Purpose: Patients with STAT1 gain-of-function (GOF) mutations often exhibit autoimmune features. The JAK1/2 inhibitor ruxolitinib can be administered to alleviate autoimmune symptoms; however, it is unclear how immune cells are molecularly changed by ruxolitinib treatment. Then, we aimed to investigate the trnscriptional and epigenetic status of immune cells before and after ruxolitinib treatment in a patient with STAT1 GOF. Methods: A patient with a heterozygous STAT1 GOF variant (p.Ala267Val), exhibiting autoimmune features, was treated with ruxolitinib, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were longitudinally collected. PBMCs were transcriptionally analyzed by single-cell cellular indexing of the transcriptomes and epitopes by sequencing (CITE-seq), and epigenetically analyzed by assay of transposase-accessible chromatin sequencing (ATAC-seq). Results: CITE-seq analysis revealed that before treatment, the patient's PBMCs exhibited aberrantly activated inflammatory features, especially IFN-related features. In particular, monocytes showed high expression levels of a subset of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs). Ruxolitinib treatment substantially downregulated aberrantly overexpressed ISGs, and improved autoimmune features. However, epigenetic analysis demonstrated that genetic regions of ISGs—e.g., STAT1, IRF1, MX1, and OAS1—were highly accessible even after ruxolitinib treatment. When ruxolitinib was temporarily discontinued, the patient's autoimmune features were aggravated, which is in line with sustained epigenetic abnormality. Conclusions: In a patient with STAT1 GOF, ruxolitinib treatment improved autoimmune features and downregulated aberrantly overexpressed ISGs, but did not correct epigenetic abnormality of ISGs. The high risk of neurological disorders in postmenopausal women is an emerging medical issue. Based on the hypothesis of altered estrogen receptors (ERα and β) after the decline of estrogen production, we investigated the changes in ERs expressions across brain regions and depressive/amnesic behaviors. C57BL/6J female mice were ovariectomized (OVX) to establish a menopausal condition. Along with behavior tests (anxiety, depression, and memory), the expression of ERs, microglial activity, and neuronal activity was measured in six brain regions (hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, striatum, raphe nucleus, amygdala, and hypothalamus) from 4 to 12 weeks after OVX. Mice exhibited anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors, as well as memory impairment. These behavioral alterations have been linked to a suppression in the expression of ERβ. The decreased ERβ expression coincided with microglial-derived neuroinflammation, as indicated by notable activations of Ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 and Interleukin-1beta. Additionally, the activity of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), particularly in the hippocampus, decreased in a time-dependent manner from 4 to 12 weeks post-OVX. Our study provides evidence shedding light on the susceptibility to memory impairment and depression in women after menopause. Vaccinating young children against rotavirus (RV) is a promising preventive strategy against rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE). We evaluated the relative risk reduction of RVGE induced by universal vaccination in Vietnam through dynamic model analysis. We developed an age-stratified dynamic Vaccinated-Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered-Susceptible model to analyze RV transmission and assess vaccine effectiveness (VE). We assumed 3 different vaccine efficacies: 55%, 70%, and 85%. For model calibration, we used a database of patients under 5 years of age admitted to Ho Chi Minh No.1 Hospital with RVGE between January 2013 and December 2018. Assuming a vaccination rate of 95%, the number of RVGE hospitalizations after 5 years from universal RV vaccination decreased from 92,502 cases to 45,626 with 85% efficacy, to 54,576 cases with 70% efficacy, and to 63,209 cases with 55% efficacy. Additionally, RVGE hospitalizations after 10 years decreased from 177,950 to 89,517 with 85% efficacy and to 121,832 cases with 55% efficacy. The relative risk reductions of RVGE after 10 years were 49.7% with 85% efficacy, 40.6% with 70% efficacy, and 31.5% with 55% efficacy. The VE was 1.10 times (95% CI, 1.01–1.22) higher in the 4-months to 1-year-old age group than in the other age groups (P = 0.038), when applying 85% efficacy with 95% coverage. In conclusion, despite its relatively lower efficacy compared to high-income countries, RV vaccination remains an effective intervention in Southwestern Vietnam. In particular, implementing universal RV vaccination with higher coverage would result in a decrease in RVGE hospitalizations among Vietnamese children under 5 years of age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents a novel methodology for the fabrication of bioadhesives composed of poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA), which demonstrate superior mechanical properties. Hydrogels based on PHEA were effectively synthesized through a strategy that obviates the need for crosslinkers, utilizing in situ polymerization of high-concentration 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) monomers under persistent agitation. Optimal operational conditions, such as polymerization duration and HEA monomer concentration, were screened through rheological evaluations. In addition, the introduction of glycerol to the PHEA hydrogels yielded improvements in water-retention capacity, thus resolving limitations frequently observed in conventional aqueous-based hydrogels. Tests assessing adhesive properties indicated that the PHEA hydrogels, synthesized without crosslinkers, exhibited exceptional adhesion capabilities that exceeded those of commercially available tissue sealants. This economically viable and readily scalable fabrication technique provides a compelling pathway for the creation of robust, biocompatible bioadhesives well-suited for biomedical utilization. Studies show that mothers with depression are more likely to engage in unsupportive emotion-related socialization behaviors, and mothers' negative emotion socialization can interfere with the development of emotion regulation in children. However, insufficient studies examine the relationship between mothers' depressive symptoms, emotion socialization, and children's emotion regulation. The present study used short-term longitudinal data to investigate the mediating role of maternal emotion socialization on the effect of maternal depressive symptoms on children's emotion regulation. Participants included 180 mothers of six-to-12-year-old children. First, we measured maternal depressive symptoms and mothers' reactions to their children's negative emotions, operationalizing emotion socialization. Then we collected data about the children's emotion regulation reported by mothers six months later. A structured equation modeling analysis indicated that maternal emotion socialization completely mediated the impact of mothers' depressive symptoms on children's emotion regulation with a significant indirect effect. The present study used short-term longitudinal data and highlighted the significant impact of mothers' depressive symptoms on children's emotion regulation mediated by maternal emotion socialization. The results suggest a need for early detection and appropriate intervention of mothers' depressive symptoms. The effects of benzalkonium chloride (BC) as a cationic surfactant on the mechanical, water barrier, microstructural, and thermal properties of adlay millet starch (AS) films were investigated in this study. With increasing BC concentration, tensile strength (from 5.93 to 6.15 MPa) and elongation at break (from 41.39 to 45.48%) of AS-BC films significantly increased, whereas their moisture content, water solubility, and water vapor permeability were reduced, indicating water resistance improvement. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that BC at concentrations below 1% did not cause noticeable changes in the microstructure of AS-BC films. In addition, the thermal stability of AS-BC films was not affected by BC, indicating good miscibility between AS and BC. Therefore, BC could improve the physicochemical properties of starch films, and AS-BC films developed in this study can be applied as novel biodegradable packaging materials in the food packaging industry. Liquid biopsy is a non-invasive diagnostic method that utilizes the detection and analysis of biomarkers in bodily fluids for the diagnosis and prognosis of various diseases. Exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs), which are remarkably stable because of the protection by extracellular vesicles (EVs), in liquid biopsy have gained considerable attention as they can regulate gene expression and serve as crucial biomarkers for the presence and progression of different types of cancer. Especially, urinary exosomal miRNAs have shown promising results as biomarkers for cancer from the urogenital system, such as bladder, renal tubular, and prostate. However, there are still significant challenges hindering the clinical utilization of urinary exosomal miRNA biomarkers, including improper sample handling, and data bias. Therefore, the detection procedure of urinary exosomal miRNAs needs to be standardized and thoroughly reviewed to ensure accurate and reliable clinical results. Background: Denosumab (DMB) is a bone antiresorptive agent used to treat osteoporosis or metastatic cancer of the bones. However, denosumab-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (DRONJ) has become a common complication in cancer patients. The prevalence of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) in cancer patients is estimated to be similar for both bisphosphonate-related cases (1.1 to 1.4%) and denosumab-related cases (0.8 to 2%), with the addition of adjunctive therapy with anti-angiogenic agents reportedly increasing its prevalence to 3%. (Spec Care Dentist 36(4):231–236, 2016). The aim of this study is to report on DRONJ in cancer patients treated with DMB (Xgeva®, 120mg). Case presentation: In this study, we identified four cases of ONJ among 74 patients receiving DMB therapy for metastatic cancer. Of the four patients, three had prostate cancer and one had breast cancer. Preceding tooth extraction within 2 months of the last DMB injection was found to be a risk factor for DRONJ. Pathological examination revealed that three patients had acute and chronic inflammation, including actinomycosis colonies. Among the four patients with DRONJ referred to us, three were successfully treated without complications and had no recurrence following surgical treatment, while one did not follow up. After healing, one patient experienced a recurrence at a different site. Sequestrectomy in conjunction with antibiotic therapy and cessation of DMB use proved to be effective in managing the condition, and the ONJ site healed after an average 5-month follow-up period. Conclusion: Conservative surgery, along with antibiotic therapy and discontinuation of DMB, was found to be effective in managing the condition. Additional studies are needed to investigate the contribution of steroids and anticancer drugs to jaw bone necrosis, the prevalence of multicenter cases, and whether there is any drug interaction with DMB. We investigated the incidence and risk factors of seizures related to progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) in Korean patients infected with HIV. Of the 34 patients, 14 (41.2%) developed epileptic seizures during a median follow-up of 82 months. The median time from PML diagnosis to seizure onset was 44 months, ranging from 0 to 133 months. Patients with PML who developed seizures more commonly had cognitive impairment and multiple or diffuse lesions on brain MRI. These findings highlight the increased seizure risk among HIV-infected patients with PML at any stage of the disease, particularly in cases with extensive involvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Marine microbes, particularly Bacteroidetes, are a rich source of enzymes that can degrade diverse marine polysaccharides. Aquimarina sp. ERC-38, which belongs to the Bacteroidetes phylum, was isolated from seawater in South Korea. It showed agar-degrading activity and required an additional carbon source for growth on marine broth 2216. Here, the genome of the strain was sequenced to understand its agar degradation mechanism, and 3615 protein-coding sequences were predicted, which were assigned putative functions according to their annotated functional feature categories. In silico genome analysis revealed that the ERC-38 strain has several carrageenan-degrading enzymes but could not degrade carrageenan because it lacked genes encoding κ-carrageenanase and S1_19A type sulfatase. Moreover, the strain possesses multiple genes predicted to encode enzymes involved in agarose degradation, which are located in a polysaccharide utilization locus. Among the enzymes, Aq1840, which is closest to ZgAgaC within the glycoside hydrolase 16 family, was characterized using a recombinant enzyme expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) cells. An enzyme assay revealed that recombinant Aq1840 mainly converts agarose to NA4. Moreover, recombinant Aq1840 could weakly hydrolyze A5 into A3 and NA2. These results showed that Aq1840 is involved in at least the initial agar degradation step prior to the metabolic pathway that uses agarose as a carbon source for growth of the strain. Thus, this enzyme can be applied to development and manufacturing industry for prebiotic and antioxidant food additive. Gene-environment (G×E) interaction could partially explain missing heritability in traits; however, the magnitudes of G×E interaction effects remain unclear. Here, we estimate the heritability of G×E interaction for body mass index (BMI) by subjecting genome-wide interaction study data of 331,282 participants in the UK Biobank to linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) and linkage disequilibrium adjusted kinships–software for estimating SNP heritability from summary statistics (LDAK-SumHer) analyses. Among 14 obesity-related lifestyle factors, MET score, pack years of smoking, and alcohol intake frequency significantly interact with genetic factors in both analyses, accounting for the partial variance of BMI. The G×E interaction heritability (%) and standard error of these factors by LDSC and LDAK-SumHer are as follows: MET score, 0.45% (0.12) and 0.65% (0.24); pack years of smoking, 0.52% (0.13) and 0.93% (0.26); and alcohol intake frequency, 0.32% (0.10) and 0.80% (0.17), respectively. Moreover, these three factors are partially validated for their interactions with genetic factors in other obesity-related traits, including waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio adjusted with BMI, and body fat percentage. Our results suggest that G×E interaction may partly explain the missing heritability in BMI, and two G×E interaction loci identified could help in understanding the genetic architecture of obesity. Purpose: This study aimed to systematically determine the inter-reader reliability of the functional liver imaging score (FLIS) and explore the factors affecting it. Methods: Original articles reporting the inter-reader reliability of FLIS derived from gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were systematically searched in the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases from January 2013 to June 2022. Data synthesis was performed to calculate the meta-analytic pooled estimates of the FLIS and its three subcategories, including enhancement quality score (EnQS), excretion quality score (ExQS), and portal vein sign quality score (PVsQS) using the DerSimonian-Laird random-effects model. To explore any cause of study heterogeneity, we conducted a meta-regression analysis. Results: Six studies with data from 1419 patients were included. The meta-analytic pooled inter-reader reliability of FLIS was 0.93 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.88–0.98). That of the three FLIS subcategories were 0.93 (95% CI, 0.85–1.00), 0.95 (95% CI, 0.91–1.00), and 0.90 (95% CI, 0.81–0.99) for EnQS, ExQS, and PVsQS, respectively. The pooled FLIS data was moderately heterogenous, but heterogeneity was not associated with the study methodology, MRI-related factors, and reader experience. Conclusion: The FLIS and its three subcategories showed almost perfect inter-reader reliability. Therefore, FLIS may be a reliable imaging parameter that reflects liver function and outcomes in patients with chronic liver disease. Outbreaks of Asynapta groverae, an invasive mycophagous gall midge, in South Korea have been repeatedly reported since the first occurrence in 2008. This species is a nuisance to residents owing to its mass emergence from newly built and furnished apartments. Here, the levels of genetic diversity, divergence, and structure of invasive A. groverae populations were investigated to understand their ability to survive in novel locations. Population genetic analyses were performed on seven invasive populations, including the first outbreak, sporadically emerged, and two laboratory-isolated (quarantined) populations, using the mitochondrial COI sequences and the ten novel microsatellite markers developed in this study. Non-indigenous A. groverae managed to maintain their populations for 12 years despite decreased genetic polymorphisms resulting from multiple incidences of founder effects by a small number of colonists. Additionally, the advantageous sustainability of A. groverae in the particle boards from which they emerge suggests that human-mediated dispersal is plausible, which may allow for the successful spread or invasion of A. groverae to new locations. This study is one of the few examples to demonstrate that an insect species successfully invaded new regions despite exhibiting decreased genetic diversity that was maintained for a decade. These findings indicate that the high genetic diversity of the initial founding population and asexual reproduction would contribute to the successful invasion of A. groverae in novel environments. The friction-assisted solid state lap joining process of dissimilar metal pipes is proposed by joining copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al) pipes. The joining process is designed to have two successive stages. In the first stage, the Cu pipe rotating with a mandrel rotates against the inner surface of the Al pipe. In the first stage, the relative rotation between the Cu and Al pipes breaks the oxide layers on the contacting surfaces and increases the temperature at the interface. In the second stage, as the area of the contact surface between the Cu and Al pipes increases due to the linear motion of the mandrel; as the mandrel begins to rotate alone against the Cu pipe, which now becomes stationary to induce diffusion bonding between the Cu and Al pipes. The results of microstructural analysis and mechanical testing show that solid state lap joining between the Cu and Al pipes for a light-weight heat exchanging component is successfully achieved. The microstructure evolution suggests that grain refinement by recrystallization occurs in the joining region for both the Cu and Al sides. Background: Bilateral cleft lip repair is one of the most difficult surgeries, and many techniques have been modified and developed to improve surgical outcomes. The current trend is toward preserving tissue as much as possible. When the reconstruction is based on the shape of the patient's own tissue, the most natural appearance is produced, and the relaxed remaining tissue can be benefitted from reducing tension and minimizing scarring. Case presentation. In the conventional surgical method, the rest of the prolabium is sacrificed, except for the tissue used to make the philtrum. We used all tissues for surgery and did not discard any. The tubercle of the median vermilion was used in its original form. Conclusions: It is fundamental to restore function in cleft lip surgery. Both patients and surgeons have a desire for esthetic outcomes that go beyond function. In addition, the measure of the success of the surgery is the postoperative resemblance to normal midfacial features. Unlike the conventional method of making tubercles by collecting lateral vermilion flaps, we preserved the tissue of the prolabium. Rather than using an artificial tubercle, we were able to create a more natural shape of the upper lip using the patient's own anatomical structure. In addition, the remaining tissues of the discarded prolabium were used to make the oral mucosa, which may help to reduce tension compared to the conventional method. The modified repair method is expected to gradually become the mainstream method owing to its superior esthetic outcome and less surgical difficulty compared with traditional methods. Objective: To develop an ensemble deep learning model (DLM) predicting anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears from lateral knee radiographs and to evaluate its diagnostic performance.Materials and Methods: In this study, 1433 lateral knee radiographs (661 with ACL tear confirmed on MRI, 772 normal) from two medical centers were split into training (n = 1146) and test sets (n = 287). Three single DLMs respectively classifying radiographs with ACL tears, abnormal lateral femoral notches, and joint effusion were developed. An ensemble DLM predicting ACL tears was developed by combining the three DLMs via stacking method. The sensitivities, specificities, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) of the DLMs and three radiologists were compared using McNemar test and Delong test. Subgroup analysis was performed to identify the radiologic features associated with the sensitivity.Results: The sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of the ensemble DLM were 86.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 79.9-92.0%), 89.4% (95% CI, 83.4-93.8%), and 0.927 (95% CI, 0.891-0.954), achieving diagnostic performance comparable with that of a musculoskeletal radiologist (P = 0.193, McNemar test; P = 0.131, Delong test). The AUC of the ensemble DLM was significantly higher than those of non-musculoskeletal radiologists (P = 0.043, P < 0.001). The sensitivity of the DLM was higher than that of the radiologists in the absence of an abnormal lateral femoral notch or joint effusion.Conclusion: The diagnostic performance of the ensemble DLM in predicting lateral knee radiographs with ACL tears was comparable to that of a musculoskeletal radiologist. Regarding to known association between underweight and non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD), the underweight was simply categorized as body mass index (BMI) less than 18.5 kg/m2, mainly because of its low prevalence. We aimed to better define the impact of BMI severity on NTM-PD development. We analysed health data from 4,332,529 individuals examined in 2009 and followed up until December 2017 to determine the incidence of NTM-PD. Based on the BMI in kg/m2, the population was categorized into mild (17.00–18.49), moderate (16.00–16.99), and severe underweight (< 16.00) groups. Using Cox proportional-hazards analyses, hazard ratios for NTM-PD were calculated according to the severity of underweight in reference to normal BMI (18.50–22.99). Over a median follow-up of 5.6 ± 1.2 years, 6223 participants developed NTM-PD. Risk of NTM-PD increased significantly with the severity of underweight: multivariate adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for mild, moderate, and severe underweight were 2.34 (2.17–2.52), 3.50 (3.07–3.99), and 4.35 (3.63–5.21), respectively. In subgroup analysis, being younger (< 65 years old) or male exacerbated the effect of severe underweight on the risk of NTM-PD. The quality of quantum bits (qubits) in silicon is highly vulnerable to charge noise that is omnipresent in semiconductor devices and is in principle hard to be suppressed. For a realistically sized quantum dot system based on a silicon-germanium heterostructure whose confinement is manipulated with electrical biases imposed on top electrodes, we computationally explore the noise-robustness of 2-qubit entangling operations with a focus on the controlled-X (CNOT) logic that is essential for designs of gate-based universal quantum logic circuits. With device simulations based on the physics of bulk semiconductors augmented with electronic structure calculations, we not only quantify the degradation in fidelity of single-step CNOT operations with respect to the strength of charge noise, but also discuss a strategy of device engineering that can significantly enhance noise-robustness of CNOT operations with almost no sacrifice of speed compared to the single-step case. Details of device designs and controls that this work presents can establish practical guideline for potential efforts to secure silicon-based quantum processors using an electrode-driven quantum dot platform. Sensors, such as optical, chemical, and electrical sensors, play an important role in our lives. While these sensors already have widespread applications, such as humidity sensors, most are generally incompatible with flexible/inactive substrates and rely on conventional hard materials and complex manufacturing processes. To overcome this, we develop a CNT-based, low-resistance, and flexible humidity sensor. The core–shell structured CNT@CPM is prepared with Chit and PAMAM to achieve reliability, accuracy, consistency, and durability, resulting in a highly sensitive humidity sensor. The average response/recovery time of optimized sensor is only less than 20 s, with high sensitivity, consistent responsiveness, good linearity according to humidity rates, and low hysteresis (− 0.29 to 0.30 %RH). Moreover, it is highly reliable for long-term (at least 1 month), repeated bending (over 15,000 times), and provides accurate humidity measurement results. We apply the sensor to smart-wear, such as masks, that could conduct multi-respiratory monitoring in real-time through automatic ventilation systems. Several multi-respiratory monitoring results demonstrate its high responsiveness (less than 1.2 s) and consistent performance, indicating highly desirable for healthcare monitoring. Finally, these automatic ventilation systems paired with flexible sensors and applied to smart-wear can not only provide comfort but also enable stable and accurate healthcare in all environments. Estimating the time delay and identifying associated factors is essential for effective tuberculosis control. We systemically analysed data obtained from the Korea Tuberculosis Cohort in 2019 by classifying delays as presentation and healthcare delays of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). Of 6593 patients with active PTB, presentation and healthcare delays were recorded in 4151 and 5571 patients, respectively. The median presentation delay was 16.0 (5.0–40.0) days. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that longer presentation delays were associated with neuropsychiatric disease [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 2.098; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.639–2.687; p < 0.001] and heavy alcohol intake (adjusted OR 1.505; 95% CI 1.187–1.907; p < 0.001). The median healthcare delay was 5.0 (1.0–14.0) days. A longer healthcare delay was associated with malignancy (adjusted OR 1.351; 95% CI 1.069–1.709; p = 0.012), autoimmune disease (adjusted OR 2.445; 95% CI 1.295–4.617; p = 0.006), and low bacterial burden manifested as an acid-fast bacillus smear-negative and tuberculosis polymerase chain reaction-negative status (adjusted OR 1.316; 95% CI 1.104–1.569; p = 0.002). Active case-finding programmes need to focus on patients with heavy alcoholism or neuropsychiatric diseases. Tuberculosis (TB) has a heterogeneous phenotype, which makes it challenging to diagnose. Our study aimed to identify TB phenotypes through cluster analysis and compare their initial symptomatic, microbiological and radiographic characteristics. We systemically collected data of notified TB patients notified in Korea and constructed a prospective, observational cohort database. Cluster analysis was performed using K-means clustering, and the variables to be included were determined by correlation network. A total of 4,370 subjects with pulmonary TB were enrolled in the study. Based on the correlation network, age and body mass index (BMI) were selected for the cluster analysis. Five clusters were identified and characterised as follows: (1) middle-aged overweight male dominance, (2) young-aged relatively female dominance without comorbidities, (3) middle-aged underweight male dominance, (4) overweight elderly with comorbidities and (5) underweight elderly with comorbidities. All clusters had distinct demographic and symptomatic characteristics. Initial microbiologic burdens and radiographic features also varied, including the presence of cavities and bilateral infiltration, which reflect TB-related severity. Cluster analysis of age and BMI identified five phenotypes of pulmonary TB with significant differences at initial clinical presentations. Precise and selective removal of silicon nitride (SiNx) over silicon oxide (SiOy) in a oxide/nitride stack is crucial for a current three dimensional NOT-AND type flash memory fabrication process. In this study, fast and selective isotropic etching of SiNx over SiOy has been investigated using a ClF3/H2 remote plasma in an inductively coupled plasma system. The SiNx etch rate over 80 nm/min with the etch selectivity (SiNx over SiOy) of ~ 130 was observed under a ClF3 remote plasma at a room temperature. Furthermore, the addition of H2 to the ClF3 resulted in an increase of etching selectivity over 200 while lowering the etch rate of both oxide and nitride due to the reduction of F radicals in the plasma. The time dependent-etch characteristics of ClF3, ClF3 & H2 remote plasma showed little loading effect during the etching of silicon nitride on oxide/nitride stack wafer with similar etch rate with that of blank nitride wafer. During the recent several decades, lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) constructed with gold nanoparticle (AuNP) has been widely utilized to conveniently detect target analyte. However, AuNP-based LFIA has limitations, such as limited detection sensitivity and quantification capability. Herein, to overcome these constraints, we have developed cerium oxide nanoparticle (nanoceria)-based LFIA for C-reactive protein (CRP) detection in human serum samples. It was fabricated with nanoceria, a notable nanozyme that shows an oxidase activity to quickly oxidize organic substrate, such as 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), to produce colored product without any oxidizing agent (e.g., hydrogen peroxide), which is advantageous for realizing point-of-care testing (POCT) applications. By employing human blood serum spiked with CRP, the nanoceria-based LFIA showed two blue-colored lines on the test and control region within 3 min via TMB oxidation, by the captured nanoceria through antigen–antibody interaction. The produced blue-colored lines were distinguished by naked eyes and quantitated with real images acquired by a conventional smartphone with the ImageJ software. With this strategy, target CRP was specifically determined down to 117 ng mL−1 with high detection precisions yielding coefficient of variation of 9.8–11.3% and recovery of 90.7–103.2% using human blood serum samples. Owing to their excellent durability, tunable physical properties, and biofunctionality, block copolymer-based membranes provide a platform for various biotechnological applications. However, conventional approaches for fabricating block copolymer membranes produce only planar or suspended polymersome structures, which limits their utilization. This study is the first to demonstrate that an electric-field-assisted self-assembly technique can allow controllable and scalable fabrication of 3-dimensional block copolymer artificial cell membranes (3DBCPMs) immobilized on predefined locations. Topographically and chemically structured microwell array templates facilitate uniform patterning of block copolymers and serve as reactors for the effective growth of 3DBCPMs. Modulating the concentration of the block copolymer and the amplitude/frequency of the electric field generates 3DBCPMs with diverse shapes, controlled sizes, and high stability (100% survival over 50 days). In vitro protein–membrane assays and mimicking of human intestinal organs highlight the potential of 3DBCPMs for a variety of biological applications such as artificial cells, cell-mimetic biosensors, and bioreactors. Targeted protein degradation allows targeting undruggable proteins for therapeutic applications as well as eliminating proteins of interest for research purposes. While several degraders that harness the proteasome or the lysosome have been developed, a technology that simultaneously degrades targets and accelerates cellular autophagic flux is still missing. In this study, we develop a general chemical tool and platform technology termed AUTOphagy-TArgeting Chimera (AUTOTAC), which employs bifunctional molecules composed of target-binding ligands linked to autophagy-targeting ligands. AUTOTACs bind the ZZ domain of the otherwise dormant autophagy receptor p62/Sequestosome-1/SQSTM1, which is activated into oligomeric bodies in complex with targets for their sequestration and degradation. We use AUTOTACs to degrade various oncoproteins and degradation-resistant aggregates in neurodegeneration at nanomolar DC50 values in vitro and in vivo. AUTOTAC provides a platform for selective proteolysis in basic research and drug development. Targeted protein degradation is a promising approach for basic research and therapeutic applications. Despite accumulated evidence on the issue of labor market inequalities on health, the literature to date has failed to consider the changing dynamics of work experiences over a full life course in understanding its association with health. This study takes a holistic approach to understanding labor market trajectories in terms of employment security among wage-earners using a multichannel sequence. Five clusters were found: Secured insider, moderate insiders, vulnerable outsider, precarious workers, and secured labor status but limited income. The findings suggest that labor market inequalities are negatively associated with health outcomes, particularly in the health of the disadvantaged group relative to labor market insiders. Vulnerable outsiders report lower odds of optimal health as well as precarious workers relative to secured insiders. However, the different patterns of association between long-term labor market inequalities and depression were emerged. Purpose: There has been a general consensus regarding the varus phenotype of the proximal tibia in osteoarthritic patients with varus knee alignment of the whole limb. However, a valgus phenotype of the distal femur may occur in osteoarthritic patients with varus knee alignment. This study evaluated the distal femur phenotype in varus osteoarthritic knees. Methods: This study included 128 patients who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) by computer-assisted navigation for primary medial osteoarthrosis with varus knee alignment. The hip–knee–ankle (HKA) angle, medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA), and joint line convergence angle (JLCA) were measured on which radiographs preoperatively. The radiographic parameters were compared between groups with HKA angle varus ≥ 10° and < 10°. Results: The MPTA was significantly lower (4°) in the HKA angle varus ≥ 10° group than in the < 10° group (82.13° vs. 86.13° P = 0.001), but the LDFA did not differ significantly between the groups (89.81° vs. 89.19° P = 0.181). Regarding the JLCA, the varus ≥ 10° group showed a 1.3° greater lateral widening than the varus < 10° group (4.87 vs. 3.56, P = 0.002). The MPTA was the only independent predictor of the MA of the lower limb (β = − 0.353, P < 0.001). Conclusion: One-third of varus osteoarthritic knees had a distal femur valgus phenotype. Multigrid methods are efficient and fast algorithms for solving elliptic equations. However, they suffer from the degradation of parallel efficiency on coarser levels: communication costs are much higher than computational costs when the number of computing core becomes massive. This study presents a coarse-grid partial semi-aggregation (CGPSA) method, where coarse grids in each direction are independently aggregated step-by-step across multiple levels. This multilevel aggregation provides a hierarchical communication structure. Thus, communication overheads are distributed into multiple levels and computational workloads are processed by multiple processes on coarser levels. Independent coarse-grid aggregation along each dimension also enhances the flexibility of multigrid method; it can be applied to the problem with a non-cubic geometry and anisotropic sizes of grids and parallel processes. Benchmark results on a large-scale cluster (up to 65k cores) are provided with a detailed performance profiling. The results show the improvement of parallel performance and scalability with the CGPSA method, which focuses on reducing communication overheads at coarser levels. They also show that the changes in the order of semi-aggregation levels can further improve performance, which implies that the proposed CGPSA method presents further scope for performance optimization. Although the resting heart rate (RHR) predicts the clinical outcomes of cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive lung disease, diabetes mellitus, and the risk of cancer, its role in patients with musculoskeletal diseases, such as osteoarthritis (OA), remains unclear. We explored the association of the RHR with the extents of radiographic changes in the knees and hands of 2369 subjects from the Dong-gu Study. The radiographic hand and knee joint findings were graded semi-quantitatively; we calculated total hand and knee joint scores. Multiple linear regression was performed to examine the associations between the RHR and the radiographic characteristics of these joints. For the knee joints, the RHR was associated positively with the total (p < 0.01), osteophyte (p < 0.01), joint space narrowing (JSN; p < 0.01), and tibial attrition (p = 0.02) scores after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, alcohol consumption, educational and physical activity levels, and comorbidities. For the hand joints, the RHR was associated positively with the JSN (p = 0.01) and subchondral cyst (p < 0.01) scores after such adjustment. The RHR was not associated with the total, osteophyte, sclerosis, erosion, or malalignment score for the hand joints. Thrombotic events (TE), including deep vein thrombosis, stroke, and myocardial infarction, occur in 30–40% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality. We explored the risk factors for TE in SLE patients. We analyzed data obtained during a prospective cohort based on the KORean lupus NETwork (KORNET) registry, and enrolled 259 SLE patients with clinical data available at the onset of SLE. TE was defined as the presence of arterial or venous thrombosis. Multivariate Cox-proportional hazards analysis was performed to investigate risk factors for TE. During a mean follow-up of 103.3 months (SD 53.4), 27 patients (10.4%) had a TE. In multivariate analysis, hypertension (hazard ratio [HR] 7.805, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.929–31.581; P = 0.004), anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS) (HR 12.600, 95% CI: 4.305–36.292; P < 0.001), mean daily prednisolone > 5 mg/day (HR 3.666, 95% CI: 1.318–10.197; P = 0.013), and SLICC/ACR Damage Index (SDI) score (HR 1.992, 95% CI: 1.465–2.709; P < 0.001) were significantly associated with the development of TE in SLE patients. Instead, use of an ACEi or ARB (HR 0.159, 95% CI: 0.043–0.594; P = 0.006) was a protective factor against TE development in these patients. In conclusion, hypertension, higher mean daily dose of prednisolone, diagnosis of APS, and higher SDI were risk factors for TE in patients with SLE. Asthma is a complex disease that is reportedly associated with insomnia. However, the causal directionality of this association is still unclear. We used asthma and insomnia-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics to test the causal directionality between insomnia and asthma via Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. We also performed a cross-trait meta-analysis using UK Biobank GWAS summary statistics and a gene–environment interaction study using data from UK Biobank. The interaction of genetic risk score for asthma (GRSasthma) with insomnia on asthma was tested by logistic regression. Insomnia was a risk factor for the incidence of asthma, as revealed by three different methods of MR analysis. However, asthma did not act as a risk factor for insomnia. The cross-trait meta-analysis identified 28 genetic loci shared between asthma and insomnia. In the gene–environment interaction study, GRSasthma interacted with insomnia to significantly affect the risk of asthma. The results of this study highlight the importance of insomnia as a risk factor of asthma, and warrant further analysis of the mechanism through which insomnia affects the risk of asthma. Digital twins are virtual replicas of real physical entities in computers. They can be considered as abstract digital models of data and behavior for objects of interest. Nevertheless, they are not perfectly consistent with conventional data or simulation models because they achieve prediction and optimization by simulating the abstract digital model of a particular system. To maintain the characteristics of digital twins in the virtual space, digital simulation models that continue to update, change, and evolve according to continuous changes of corresponding physical factors must be used. Owing to the various advantages of digital twin technology, digital twins have gained more attention. However, the method to create digital twins is still unclear. Additionally, the availability and sufficiency of information on physical entities to which digital twins will be applied must be considered, and a model suitable for their application must be designed. Therefore, multimedia knowledge-based bridge health monitoring using digital twins is proposed herein. It synchronizes real and virtual spaces to reflect the reality based on various data collected using sensors of real systems. In this study, various situations of virtual bridge twins in a facility management area are simulated to provide digital services to ensure bridge health. This digital bridge health service analyzes situations based on a small amount of data collected from a bridge, predicts the optimal time point for maintenance, and then applies it to the real world. Purpose: To systematically determine the inter-reader reliability of the contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS), with emphasis on its major features for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and LR-M (LI-RADS category M) features for non-HCC malignancy. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases were searched from January 2016 to March 2021 to identify original articles reporting the inter-reader reliability of CEUS LI-RADS. Meta-analytic pooled kappa values (κ) were calculated for major features [nonrim arterial-phase hyperenhancement (APHE), mild and late washout], LR-M features (rim APHE, early washout), and LI-RADS categorization using the DerSimonian-Laird random-effects model. Meta-regression analysis was performed to explore any causes of study heterogeneity. Results: Twelve studies with a total of 2862 lesions were included. The meta-analytic pooled κ of nonrim APHE, mild and late washout, rim APHE, early washout, and LI-RADS categorization were 0.73 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.67 − 0.79], 0.69 (95% CI, 0.54–0.84), 0.54 (95% CI, 0.37–0.71), 0.62 (95% CI, 0.45–0.79), and 0.75 (95% CI, 0.64–0.87), respectively. Compared with the major features, LR-M features had a lower meta-analytic pooled κ. Substantial study heterogeneity was noted in the LI-RADS categorization, and lesion size (p = 0.03) and the homogeneity in reader experience (p = 0.03) were significantly associated with study heterogeneity. Conclusions: CEUS LI-RADS showed substantial inter-reader reliability for major features and LI-RADS categorization, but relatively lower reliability was found for LR-M features. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent flows have increasing importance because they not only provide fundamental understanding of turbulent flows but also complement and extend experimental results. DNS of high Reynolds numbers, however, require huge computing cost so high-performance computing has been strongly pursued. In this study, we examine the feasibility of cost-efficient DNS on Intel Xeon Phi many-core processors that are currently adopted by 10% of the 100 largest supercomputers in the world as listed in the Top500 site. For this purpose, we port and optimize our in-house turbulent flow solver named as DNS-TBL (direct numerical simulation-turbulent boundary layer) on Xeon Phi Knights Landing (KNL) many-core processors and conduct benchmark tests on KNL and conventional multicore processors. The key architectural features of KNL processors and strategies to exploit them for performance enhancement are discussed. The optimized code is validated by conducting numerical simulations of zero-pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers at high Reynolds numbers and by comparing simulated turbulent statistics to those reported in previous studies. With the details of optimization strategies and validation processes, this work can serve as a practical guideline for acceleration of large-scale and precise DNS with many-core computing. Objectives: To establish inter-reader reliability of CT Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) and explore factors that affect it. Methods: MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched from January 2014 to March 2020 to identify original articles reporting the inter-reader reliability of CT LI-RADS. The imaging analysis methodology of each study was identified, and pooled intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) or kappa values (κ) were calculated for lesion size, major features (arterial-phase hyperenhancement [APHE], nonperipheral washout [WO], and enhancing capsule [EC]), and LI-RADS categorization (LR) using random-effects models. Subgroup analyses of pooled κ were performed for the number of readers, average reader experience, differences in reader experience, and LI-RADS version. Results: In the 12 included studies, the pooled ICC or κ of lesion size, APHE, WO, EC, and LR were 0.99 (0.96−1.00), 0.69 (0.58–0.81), 0.67 (0.53–0.82), 0.65 (0.54–0.76), and 0.70 (0.59–0.82), respectively. The experience and number of readers varied: studies using readers with ≥ 10 years of experience showed significantly higher κ for LR (0.82 vs. 0.45, p = 0.01) than those with < 10 years of reader experience. Studies with multiple readers including inexperienced readers showed significantly lower κ for APHE (0.55 vs. 0.76, p = 0.04) and LR (0.45 vs. 0.79, p = 0.02) than those with all experienced readers. Conclusions: CT LI-RADS showed substantial inter-reader reliability for major features and LR. Inter-reader reliability differed significantly according to average reader experience and differences in reader experience. Reported results for inter-reader reliability of CT LI-RADS should be understood with consideration of the imaging analysis methodology. A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, non-flagellated, rod-shaped bacterium, designated GSB7T, was isolated from seawater collected at the Yellow Sea coast of South Korea. Catalase and oxidase activities were positive. Growth occurred at pH 6.0–9.0 (optimum pH 7.0), 10–40 °C (optimum 30 °C) and with 0–8% NaCl (optimum 1–2%). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain GSB7T belonged to the genus Marivivens, showing the sequence similarities of 96.3, 96.1, and 96.0% with Marivivens niveibacter HSLHS2T, Limimaricola hongkongensis DSM17492T, and Marivivens donghaensis AM-4T, respectively. The respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10 and the major fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18:1ω7c and/or C18:1ω6c), C18:1ω7c 11-methyl, C16:0 and C10:0 3-OH. The polar lipids comprised phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified aminolipid, and five unidentified lipids. The DNA G + C content calculated from the whole-genome sequence was 60.6 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic characteristics presented in this study, strain GSB7T is suggested to represent a novel species of the genus Marivivens, for which the name Marivivens aquimaris sp. nov. is proposed. Impacted mandibular third molars (M3M) are associated with the occurrence of distal caries on the adjacent mandibular second molars (DCM2M). In this study, we aimed to develop and validate five machine learning (ML) models designed to predict the occurrence of DCM2Ms due to the proximity with M3Ms and determine the relative importance of predictive variables for DCM2Ms that are important for clinical decision making. A total of 2642 mandibular second molars adjacent to M3Ms were analyzed and DCM2Ms were identified in 322 cases (12.2%). The models were trained using logistic regression, random forest, support vector machine, artificial neural network, and extreme gradient boosting ML methods and were subsequently validated using testing datasets. The performance of the ML models was significantly superior to that of single predictors. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the machine learning models ranged from 0.88 to 0.89. Six features (sex, age, contact point at the cementoenamel junction, angulation of M3Ms, Winter's classification, and Pell and Gregory classification) were identified as relevant predictors. These prediction models could be used to detect patients at a high risk of developing DCM2M and ultimately contribute to caries prevention and treatment decision-making for impacted M3Ms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Image registration-based local displacement analysis enables evaluation of respiratory motion between two computed tomography-captured lung volumes. The objective of this study was to compare diaphragm movement among emphysema, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and normal subjects. 29 normal, 50 emphysema, and 51 IPF subjects were included. A mass preserving image registration technique was used to compute displacement vectors of local lung regions at an acinar scale. Movement of the diaphragm was assumed to be equivalent to movement of the basal lung within 5 mm from the diaphragm. Magnitudes and directions of displacement vectors were compared between the groups. Three-dimensional (3D) and apico-basal displacements were smaller in emphysema than normal subjects (P = 0.003, P = 0.002). Low lung attenuation area on expiration scan showed significant correlations with decreased 3D and apico-basal displacements (r = − 0.546, P < 0.0001; r = − 0.521, P < 0.0001) in emphysema patients. Dorsal–ventral displacement was smaller in IPF than normal subjects (P < 0.0001). The standard deviation of the displacement angle was greater in both emphysema and IPF patients than normal subjects (P < 0.0001). In conclusion, apico-basal movement of the diaphragm is reduced in emphysema while dorsal–ventral movement is reduced in IPF. Image registration technique to multi-volume CT scans provides insight into the pathophysiology of limited diaphragmatic motion in emphysema and IPF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
