Photonic time crystals refer to materials whose dielectric properties are periodic in time, analogous to a photonic crystal whose dielectric properties is periodic in space. Here, we theoretically investigate photonic time-crystalline behaviour initiated by optical excitation above the electronic gap of the excitonic insulator candidate Ta2NiSe5. We show that after electron photoexcitation, electron-phonon coupling leads to an unconventional squeezed phonon state, characterised by periodic oscillations of phonon fluctuations. Squeezing oscillations lead to photonic time crystalline behaviour. The key signature of the photonic time crystalline behaviour is terahertz (THz) amplification of reflectivity in a narrow frequency band. The theory is supported by experimental results on Ta2NiSe5 where photoexcitation with short pulses leads to enhanced THz reflectivity with the predicted features. We explain the key mechanism leading to THz amplification in terms of a simplified electron-phonon Hamiltonian motivated by ab-initio DFT calculations. Our theory suggests that the pumped Ta2NiSe5 is a gain medium, demonstrating that squeezed phonon noise may be used to create THz amplifiers in THz communication applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we address the question of whether high-temperature superconductors have anything in common with BCS-BEC crossover theory. Towards this goal, we present a proposal and related predictions which provide a concrete test for the applicability of this theoretical framework. These predictions characterize the behavior of the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length, ξ 0 coh , near the transition temperature Tc, and across the entire superconducting Tc dome in the phase diagram. That we are lacking a systematic characterization of ξ 0 coh in the entire class of cuprate superconductors is perhaps surprising, as it is one of the most fundamental properties of any superconductor. This paper is written to motivate further experiments and, thus, address this shortcoming. Here we show how measurements of ξ 0 coh contain direct indications for whether or not the cuprates are associated with BCS-BEC crossover and, if so, where within the crossover spectrum a particular superconductor lies. Optical driving of materials has emerged as a versatile tool to control their properties, with photo-induced superconductivity being among the most fascinating examples. In this work, we show that light or lattice vibrations coupled to an electronic interband transition naturally give rise to electron-electron attraction that may be enhanced when the underlying boson is driven into a non-thermal state. We find this phenomenon to be resonantly amplified when tuning the boson’s frequency close to the energy difference between the two electronic bands. This result offers a simple microscopic mechanism for photo-induced superconductivity and provides a recipe for designing new platforms in which light-induced superconductivity can be realized. We discuss two-dimensional heterostructures as a potential test ground for light-induced superconductivity concretely proposing a setup consisting of a graphene-hBN-SrTiO3 heterostructure, for which we estimate a superconducting Tc that may be achieved upon driving the system.The authors theoretically propose a simple microscopic mechanism for light-induced superconductivity based on a boson coupled to an electronic interband transition. The electron-electron attraction needed for the superconductivity can be resonantly amplified when the boson’s frequency is close to the energy difference between the two electronic bands. We examine key aspects of the theory of the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover, focusing on the temperature dependence of the chemical potential, μ. We identify an accurate method of determining the change of μ in the cuprate high temperature superconductors from angle-resolved-photoemission data (along the 'nodal' direction), and show that μ varies by less than a few percent of the Fermi energy over a range of temperatures from far below to several times above the superconducting transition temperature, Tc. This shows, unambiguously, that not only are these materials always on the BCS side of the crossover (which is a phase transition in the d-wave case), but are nowhere near the point of the crossover (where the chemical potential approaches the band bottom). The non-equilibrium dynamics of matter excited by light may produce electronic phases, such as laser-induced high-transition-temperature superconductivity, that do not exist in equilibrium. Here we simulate the dynamics of a metal driven at initial time by a spatially uniform pump that excites dipole-active vibrational modes which couple nonlinearly to electrons. We provide evidence for rapid loss of spatial coherence, leading to emergent effective disorder in the dynamics, which arises in a system unitarily evolving under a translation-invariant Hamiltonian, and dominates the electronic behavior as the system evolves towards a correlated electron-phonon long-time state, possibly explaining why transient superconductivity is not observed. Our framework provides a basis within which to understand correlation dynamics in current pump-probe experiments of vibrationally coupled electrons, highlight the importance of the evolution of phase coherence, and demonstrate that pumped electron-phonon systems provide a means of realizing dynamically induced disorder in translation-invariant systems. Superconductivity reported in metals driven away from equilibrium via optical pumping has been proposed to arise from nonlinear coupling between electrons and optically excited phonons. Recent theoretical research on tensor gauge theories led to the discovery of an exotic type of quasiparticles, dubbed fractons, that obey both charge and dipole conservation. Here we describe physical implementation of dipole conservation laws in realistic systems. We show that fractons find a natural realization in hole-doped antiferromagnets. There, individual holes are largely immobile, while dipolar hole pairs move with ease. First, we demonstrate a broad parametric regime of fracton behavior in hole-doped two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnets viable through five orders in perturbation theory. We then specialize to the case of holes confined to one dimension in an otherwise two-dimensional antiferromagnetic background, which can be realized via the application of external fields in experiments, and prove ideal fracton behavior. We explicitly map the model onto a fracton Hamiltonian featuring conservation of dipole moment. Manifestations of fractonicity in these systems include gravitational clustering of holes. We also discuss diagnostics of fracton behavior, which we argue is borne out in existing experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
