Objectives: Mind–body practices such as meditation are growing in popularity worldwide as effective methods for reducing stress and enhancing well-being. A vast body of literature explores the brain oscillations underlying these practices. However, neuroscientific studies on mind–body practices within Yogic traditions, such as Isha Yoga, remain limited. The present study addresses this gap and aims to provide valuable insights into the impact of Isha Yoga practices on brain oscillations and mental well-being. Method: We conducted a cross-sectional study with advanced meditators (n = 42), novice meditators (n = 33) from the Isha Yoga tradition from India, and meditation-naïve controls (n = 28). We collected high-density (128-channel) EEG recordings during various Isha Yoga practices, including alternate nostril-breathing pranayama, breath-watching, and shoonya meditation (non-dual awareness practice; non-duality refers to an experience that is undivided by dualities, such as self and other). We further examined meditation depth and various psychological outcomes using standard questionnaires. Results: Brain oscillatory dynamics of Isha meditators were significantly different from those of controls. Advanced meditators demonstrated distinctive trait effects, including heightened frontal mid-line theta, alpha, and beta power at rest. During pranayama and breath-watching, both novice and advanced meditators displayed increases in power in all the frequency bands compared to rest, indicative of a state of relaxed alertness. During shoonya, when compared to rest, we observed reduced power in all frequency bands in novice meditators and controls, while advanced meditators showed sustained power in all bands. Further, meditation depth questionnaire findings during breath-watching and shoonya meditation indicated advanced meditators achieved greater meditation depth and non-duality, suggesting experience of deeper states of consciousness. Finally, we found significant associations between the practice of Isha Yoga and better mental-health outcomes such as lower perceived stress and mental distress, and higher well-being. Conclusions: The results highlight a state of relaxed alertness and better psychological outcomes in both novice and advanced meditators compared to controls. Advanced meditators also report experiencing states of non-duality during breath-watching and Shoonya. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the positive impact of Isha Yoga practices on brain function and mental well-being. In the face of rising mental health challenges, mind–body practices such as Isha Yoga could provide substantial benefits to the wider population. Preregistration: This study is not preregistered. Growing demands for cleaner energy sources lead to innovations that require investigations in solar energy harvesting. Though numerous organic and inorganic photovoltaic devices have been explored for the solar power conversion, achieving a high efficiency is still an open challenge for the researchers. In this context, an efficient, self-adjusting solar power panel coupled with low-cost and high reliability is of great significance and demand. In this study, we investigate the potential of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuators for solar tracking applications. Three SMA configurations were considered containing one and up to three SMAs arranged in parallel. The temperature range for the displacement experiments was 40°–60°. Additionally, three levels of mass were used, namely, 500 g, 600 g, and 700 g. The displacement experiments revealed that the addition of more SMAs into the configuration provided a more consistent performance. The force experiment revealed that two-SMA configuration achieved 60% higher force production compared to the one-SMA configuration under the same conditions while the three-SMA configuration was 31% higher than in the two-SMA configuration and 110% compared to the one-SMA configuration. Additionally, the force hysteresis of the two-SMA setup was smaller and closer to that of single-SMA configuration. The two-SMA configuration force hysteresis exhibited a more linear trend as compared to that of the three-SMA configuration. The outcomes of this work highlight the potential of using SMAs as actuators in solar-powered applications and that optimization in terms of the needed number of SMAs is required to meet the displacement and/or force requirements.Article Highlights: SMA actuators show promise for efficient solar tracking, with higher temperatures leading to increased displacement. Aluminium doped zinc oxide (AZO) nanomaterials (AlxZn1-xO) with x fraction varying as 0.02 and 0.04 were synthesized using the auto-combustion method using glycine as a fuel. The synthesized catalysts were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Visible Spectroscopy (UV–Vis), Raman spectroscopy, Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM). XRD results showed that synthesized materials possessed good crystallinity, while UV–VIS was employed to find the band gaps of synthesized materials. Raman was used to determine the vibrational modes in the synthesized nanoparticles, while TEM analysis was performed to study the morphology of the samples. Industrial effluents such as indigo carmine and azo carmine G were used to test the photodegradation ability of synthesised catalysts. Parameters such as the effect of catalyst loading, dye concentration and pH were studied. The reduction in crystallite size, band gap and increased lattice strain for the 4% AZO was the primary reason for the degradation in visible irradiation, degrading 97 and 99% equimolar concentrations of indigo carmine and azo carmine G in 140 min. Aggression in children is frequent during the early years of childhood. Among children with psychiatric disorders in general, and autism in particular, challenging behaviours and aggression rates are higher. These can take on different forms, such as hitting, kicking, and throwing objects. Social robots that are able to detect undesirable interactions within its surroundings can be used to target such behaviours. In this study, we evaluate the performance of five machine learning techniques in characterizing five possible undesired interactions between a child and a social robot. We examine the effects of adding different combinations of raw data and extracted features acquired from two sensors on the performance and speed of prediction. Additionally, we evaluate the performance of the best developed model with children. Machine learning algorithms experiments showed that XGBoost achieved the best performance across all metrics (e.g., accuracy of 90%) and provided fast predictions (i.e., 0.004 s) for the test samples. Experiments with features showed that acceleration data were the most contributing factor on the prediction compared to gyroscope data and that combined data of raw and extracted features provided a better overall performance. Testing the best model with data acquired from children performing interactions with toys produced a promising performance for the shake and throw behaviours. The Harmonized Diagnostic Assessment of Dementia for the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI-DAD) is a nationally representative in-depth study of cognitive aging and dementia. We present a publicly available dataset of harmonized cognitive measures of 4,096 adults 60 years of age and older in India, collected across 18 states and union territories. Blood samples were obtained to carry out whole blood and serum-based assays. Results are included in a venous blood specimen datafile that can be linked to the Harmonized LASI-DAD dataset. A global screening array of 960 LASI-DAD respondents is also publicly available for download, in addition to neuroimaging data on 137 LASI-DAD participants. Altogether, these datasets provide comprehensive information on older adults in India that allow researchers to further understand risk factors associated with cognitive impairment and dementia. Theoretically, it is more challenging to anticipate the conversion and selectivity of a photochemical experiment compared to thermally generated reactivity. This is due to the interaction of light with a photoreactive substrate. Photochemical reactions do not yet receive the same level of broad analytical study. Here, we close this research gap by presenting a methodology for statistically forecasting the time-dependent progression of photoreactions using widely available LEDs. This study uses NiS/ZnO in perovskite (MAPbI3) solar cells as an additive (5 volume %). The effect of monolithic perovskite solar cells (mPSCs) on forecasting the wavelength of LEDs has been carefully investigated using various characterization methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic activity was analyzed by measuring the voltage produced. Various factors like selectivity, stability and sensitivity were also examined. Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) studies provide important insights into the genetic architecture of serious mental illness (SMI). Genes that are central to the shared biology of SMIs may be identified by WES in families with multiple affected individuals with diverse SMI (F-SMI). We performed WES in 220 individuals from 75 F-SMI families and 60 unrelated controls. Within pedigree prioritization employed criteria of rarity, functional consequence, and sharing by ≥ 3 affected members. Across the sample, gene and gene-set-wide case–control association analysis was performed with Sequence Kernel Association Test (SKAT). In 14/16 families with ≥ 3 sequenced affected individuals, we identified a total of 78 rare predicted deleterious variants in 78 unique genes shared by ≥ 3 members with SMI. Twenty (25%) genes were implicated in monogenic CNS syndromes in OMIM (OMIM-CNS), a fraction that is a significant overrepresentation (Fisher's Exact test OR = 2.47, p = 0.001). In gene-set SKAT, statistically significant association was noted for OMIM-CNS gene-set (SKAT-p = 0.005) but not the synaptic gene-set (SKAT-p = 0.17). In this WES study in F-SMI, we identify private, rare, protein altering variants in genes previously implicated in Mendelian neuropsychiatric syndromes; suggesting pleiotropic influences in neurodevelopment between complex and Mendelian syndromes. In this first cross-sectional MRI study in acute catatonia, we compared the resting state whole-brain, within-network and seed (left precentral gyrus)-to-voxel connectivity, as well as cortical surface complexity between a sample of patients in acute retarded catatonic state (n = 15) diagnosed as per DSM-5 criteria and a demographically matched healthy control sample (n = 15). The patients had comorbid Axis-I psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia spectrum disorders and psychotic mood disorders, but did not have diagnosable neurological disorders. Acute retarded catatonia was characterized by reduced resting state functional connectivity, most robustly within the sensorimotor network; diffuse region of interest (ROI)-ROI hyperconnectivity; and seed-to-voxel hyperconnectivity in the frontoparietal and cerebellar regions. The seed (left precentral gyrus)-to-voxel connectivity was positively correlated to the catatonia motor ratings. The ROI–ROI as well as seed-to-voxel functional hyperconnectivity were noted to be higher in lorazepam responders (n = 9) in comparison to the non-responders (n = 6). The overall Hedges' g effect sizes for these analyses ranged between 0.82 and 3.53, indicating robustness of these results, while the average Dice coefficients from jackknife reliability analyses ranged between 0.6 and 1, indicating fair (inter-regional ROI–ROI connectivity) to perfect (within-sensorimotor network connectivity) reliability of the results. The catatonia sample showed reduced vertex-wise cortical complexity in the right insular cortex and contiguous areas. Thus, we have identified neuroimaging markers of the acute retarded catatonic state that may show an association with treatment response to benzodiazepines. We discuss how these novel findings have important translational implications for understanding the pathophysiology of catatonia as well as for the mechanistic understanding and prediction of treatment response to benzodiazepines. The introduction of a practical solar cell by Bell Laboratory, which had an efficiency of approximately 6%, signified photovoltaic technology as a potentially viable energy source. Continuous efforts have been made to increase power conversion efficiency (PCE). In the present review, the advances made in solar cells (SCs) are summarized. Material and device engineering are described for achieving enhanced light absorption, electrical properties, stability and higher PCE in SCs. The strategies in materials and coating techniques for large area deposition are further elaborated, which is expected to be helpful for realizing high-efficiency SCs. The methods of light-harvesting in SCs via anti-reflecting coatings, surface texturing, patterned growth of nanostructure, and plasmonics are discussed. Moreover, progress in mechanical methods that are used for sun tracking are elaborated. The assistance of the above two protocols in maximizing the power output of SCs are discussed in detail. Finally, further research efforts needed to overcome roadblocks in commercialization were highlighted and perspectives on the future development of this rapidly advancing field are offered. Biodiesel is one among the recent developments in the field of renewable energy research. To enhance the combustion characteristics of compression ignition engine, industry and academicians were working towards clean and renewable energy resource. Algal biodiesel was one of the major research arenas in the recent decade of renewable energy. Bio-oil from marine brown macro algae, Stoechospermum marginatum was used as the test fuel in this study. The purpose of this numerical study was to analyse the combustion behaviour of compression ignition engine when fuelled with Stoechospermum marginatum biodiesel as a fuel. The numerical study was performed using the zero-dimensional combustion model by incorporating the dynamic combustion duration during the heat transfer using the MATLAB Simulink software. The developed model which incorporated the instantaneous combustion duration was a novel approach. Validations of the numerical results on combustion features like in-cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise, rate of heat release, and cumulative heat release were done by comparing it with the experimental data. Important breakthroughs in medical treatments have improved outcomes for patients suffering from several types of cancer. However, many oncological treatments approved by regulatory agencies are of low value and do not contribute significantly to cancer mortality reduction, but lead to unrealistic patient expectations and push even affluent societies to unsustainable health care costs. Several factors that contribute to approvals of low-value oncology treatments are addressed, including issues with clinical trials, bias in reporting, regulatory agency shortcomings and drug pricing. With the COVID-19 pandemic enforcing the elimination of low-value interventions in all fields of medicine, efforts should urgently be made by all involved in cancer care to select only high-value and sustainable interventions. Transformation of medical education, improvement in clinical trial design, quality, conduct and reporting, strict adherence to scientific norms by regulatory agencies and use of value-based scales can all contribute to raising the bar for oncology drug approvals and influence drug pricing and availability. Evolutionary trends may underlie some aspects of the risk for common, non-communicable disorders, including psychiatric disease. We analyzed whole exome sequencing data from 80 unique individuals from India coming from families with two or more individuals with severe mental illness. We used Population Branch Statistics (PBS) to identify variants and genes under positive selection and identified 74 genes as candidates for positive selection. Of these, 20 were previously associated with Schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease and cognitive abilities in genome wide association studies. We then checked whether any of these 74 genes were involved in common biological pathways or related to specific cellular or molecular functions. We found that immune related pathways and functions related to innate immunity such as antigen binding were over-represented. We also evaluated for the presence of Neanderthal introgressed segments in these genes and found Neanderthal introgression in a single gene out of the 74 candidate genes. However, the introgression pattern indicates the region is unlikely to be the source for selection. Our findings hint at how selection pressures in individuals from families with a history of severe mental illness may diverge from the general population. Further, it also provides insights into the genetic architecture of severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia and its link to immune factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low-cost biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (GAgNPs) were used to enhance the properties of Al-carbon nanotube (CNTs) composites. Al-x% CNTs (× =0, 1, 2, 3, 4) and Al-x% CNTs (× =0, 1, 2, 3, 4) with 2%GAgNPs were produced using high intensive ball milling and spark plasma sintering. The densification, electrical conductivity, microstructure, hardness values, and wear rate were determined. The balling milling of the powders and the SPS method used in the production of the nanocomposites help to close the micro-voids in the materials with high values of densification. Higher dislocation density was obtained for the Al-4%CNTs+2%GAgNPs nanocomposites. A 7.8% and 93.11% raise in the electrical conductivity was obtained for Al, Al-4%CNTs, and Al-4%CNTs-2%GAgNPs composites. It can be concluded that the wear behavior of the Al-CNTs-GAgNPs nanocomposites was affected by the good densification of the composites, homogenous distribution of the reinforcement, and hardness values of the nanocomposites. It was established that a lower coefficient of friction and wear rate with higher electrical conductivity can be obtained with the developed Al-CNTs+GAgNPs nanocomposites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Enzalutamide is an orally administered drug that blocks signaling in the androgen receptor with clinical activity in both chemotherapy-naive and post-chemotherapy patients with castrate-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Enzalutamide is generally well-tolerated, but dose reductions are nonetheless needed in case of side effects.Case: An 82-year-old patient with chemotherapy-naive metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer was treated with a very low dose of 40 mg enzalutamide once daily. The trough levels of enzalutamide and the active metabolite N-desmethylenzalutamide were 4.5 mg/L and 3.0 mg/L, respectively. This exposure provided a long-term response without any significant side effects.Conclusion: Low doses of enzalutamide may be efficacious, while also reducing the risk of side effects. Furthermore, employing a lower dose would reduce healthcare costs and increase access to enzalutamide. Studies exploring the efficacy of lower enzalutamide doses are warranted. Aim: Infection after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, though rare, is a potentially devastating complication and the evidence-based recommendation on the various topics in its management is limited. The purpose of this study was to develop recommendations for the prevention and management of infections in ACL reconstruction surgery by performing a structured expert consensus survey using Delphi methodology. Materials and Methods: 22 topics of relevance in the prevention and management of infection following ACL reconstruction were chosen from an extensive literature review. 30 panelists were requested to respond to a three-round survey, with feedback, to develop a consensus statement on the topics. Results: Consensus statements could be prepared in eleven out of twenty-two topics including: the graft is retained at the first arthroscopic debridement, the graft is removed when repeated debridement are needed, and revision ACL reconstruction is needed only if the patient develops instability. Concurrence could be obtained in the topics including: longer duration of antibiotics is needed in immunocompromised patients, soaking graft in antibiotic solution reduces infection risk, and knee swelling without warmth does not suggest infection. Conclusions: A proper skin preparation, a longer course of antibiotics in immunocompromised patients, and soaking the graft in antibiotics reduces the risk of infection. In case of infection, a healthy-looking graft must be retained at the first debridement and if the graft must be removed, revision ACL reconstruction is advised only if the patient develops instability. The quality of a companion robot's reaction is important to make it acceptable to the users and to sustain interactions. Furthermore, the robot's reaction can be used to train socially acceptable behaviors and to develop certain skills in both normally developing children and children with cognitive disabilities. In this study, we investigate the influence of reaction time in the emotional response of a robot when children display aggressive interactions toward it. Different interactions were considered, namely, pickup, shake, drop and throw. The robot produced responses as audible sounds, which were activated at three different reaction times, namely, 0.5 s, 1.0 s, and 1.5 s. The results for one of the tasks that involved shaking the robotic toys produced a significant difference between the timings tested. This could imply that producing a late response to an action (i.e. greater than 1.0 s) could negatively affect the children's comprehension of the intended message. Furthermore, the response should be comprehensible to provide a clear message to the user. Lithium is an effective, well-established treatment for bipolar disorder (BD). However, the mechanisms of its action, and reasons for variations in clinical response, are unclear. We used neural precursor cells (NPCs) and lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs), from BD patients characterized for clinical response to lithium (using the "Alda scale" and "NIMH Retrospective Life chart method"), to interrogate cellular phenotypes related to both disease and clinical lithium response. NPCs from two biologically related BD patients who differed in their clinical response to lithium were compared with healthy controls. RNA-Seq and analysis, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), cell viability, and cell proliferation parameters were assessed, with and without in vitro lithium. These parameters were also examined in LCLs from 25 BD patients (16 lithium responders and 9 non-responders), and 12 controls. MMP was lower in both NPCs and LCLs from BD; but it was reversed with in vitro lithium only in LCLs, and this was unrelated to clinical lithium response. The higher cell proliferation observed in BD was unaffected by in vitro lithium. Cell death was greater in BD. However, LCLs from clinical lithium responders could be rescued by addition of in vitro lithium. In vitro lithium also enhanced BCL2 and GSK3B expression in these cells. Our findings indicate cellular phenotypes related to the disease (MMP, cell proliferation) in both NPCs and LCLs; and those related to clinical lithium response (cell viability, BCL2/GSK3B expression) in LCLs. Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) represents the transition between healthy aging and Alzheimer's dementia (AD) wherein gradual impairment of cognitive abilities, especially memory sets in. Impairment in episodic memory, especially delayed recall, is a hallmark of AD and therefore, patients with aMCI with more severe impairment in episodic memory are considered to be at greater risk of imminent conversion to AD. Brain structural and functional abnormalities were examined by comparing gray matter volumes, white matter micro-structural integrity and resting state functional connectivity (rsFC), between patients with aMCI (n = 46) having lower vs. higher episodic memory delayed recall (EM-DR) performance scores, correcting the influences of age, sex, number of years of formal education and total brain volumes using voxel-based morphometry, whole-brain tract based spatial statistics and dual regression analysis respectively. 'Low' performers (n = 27) when compared to 'high' performers (n = 19) showed significantly increased rsFC in the dorsal attention network (DAN) and central executive network (CEN) in the absence of demonstrable gray matter volumetric or white matter micro-structural integrity differences at family-wise error (FWE) corrected (p < 0.05) significance threshold. Follow-up data available for 38 (low performers = 22; high performers = 16) of the above 46 subjects (82.60% follow-up rate) over a median follow-up period of 24.5 months revealed that 7 subjects (18.42%) had converted to dementia. These converted subjects included 5 of the 22 low performers (22.72%) and 2 of the 16 high performers (12.5%) within the follow-up sample (n = 38). The results of the study indicate that imminent conversion of aMCI to dementia is higher in low performers in comparison to high performers, which may be characterized by increased rsFC in task positive networks, viz., DAN and CEN, as opposed to gray or white matter structural changes. Social robots have gained a lot of attention recently as they have been reported to be effective in supporting therapeutic services for children with autism. However, children with autism may exhibit a multitude of challenging behaviors that could be harmful to themselves and to others around them. Furthermore, social robots are meant to be companions and to elicit certain social behaviors. Hence, the presence of a social robot during the occurrence of challenging behaviors might increase any potential harm. In this paper, we identified harmful scenarios that might emanate between a child and a social robot due to the manifestation of challenging behaviors. We then quantified the harm levels based on severity indices for one of the challenging behaviors (i.e. throwing of objects). Our results showed that the overall harm levels based on the selected severity indices are relatively low compared to their respective thresholds. However, our investigation of harm due to throwing of a small social robot to the head revealed that it could potentially cause tissue injuries, subconcussive or even concussive events in extreme cases. Abstract: We report the synthesis and luminescence properties of the pure and Al-doped photosensitive ZnO films by microwave successive ionic layer adsorption reaction. The grain textured growth along c-axis in pure ZnO thin films and those doped with Al was studied by Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The Al-doped films show high textured grain growth and high green emission intensity. The structural analysis of the thin films by X-ray diffraction along with scanning electron microscopy and its optical properties (photoluminescence) suggest creation of oxygen vacancy during doping which is responsible for the higher grain growth. The resistance measurements on the ZnO thin films reveal its significance in sensing and such films acts as good components of intelligent solar panels in which the electrical properties can be tuned by electron beam irradiation.Graphical abstract: [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of electron beam irradiation of dielectric and conductivity properties of nano ZnO-natural rubber (NR) disks was investigated here. It is revealed that electric properties such as AC conductivity, dielectric constant, and loss tangent of the irradiated samples were improved significantly as compared to the non-irradiated samples, which have been associated with defects in the composites. The total number of dipoles was generated inside the polymer matrix upon irradiation depends on the dislocations formed inside the matrix. From the experiments, we observe that in the amorphous region electron beam irradiation fetches crosslinking and breakdown at the same time. The enhancement of the dielectric and conductivity properties demonstrates that nano ZnO-NR disks will be a promising candidate for the optoelectronic industry. Microwave-assisted successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction was employed to synthesize Sn-ZnO (tin-doped zinc oxide), and its sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation is compared with zinc oxide (ZnO). The sensing films were made by the dip-coated method on an indium titanium oxide glass substrate, and the sensing performance was monitored using the 300-700 nm wavelength of UV-Vis light. Excellent sensitivity and recovery were observed for the Sn-doped ZnO sensor device, especially at 380 nm wavelength of ultraviolet (UV) light (response and recovery time 2.26 s and 8.63 s, respectively, at 5 V bias voltage). The variation in photocurrent with respect to dark and light illumination atmosphere was well illustrated based on the Schottky and inter-particle network effects. Doping of Sn on ZnO nanoparticles varied the surface roughness and crystallite size as observed from scanning electron microscopic and x-ray diffraction studies. Here, we demonstrate a simple and economical fabrication technique for designing a high-performance UV light sensor. The developed device works at room temperature with high durability and stability. The present study deals with the development of a chemical sensor for the detection of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at a low operating temperature using Zinc ferrite (ZnFeO)/ Bacillus subtilis ( B. subtilis) hybrid nanostructures. The nanostructure ZnFeO and B. subtilis powder, taken in equal proportion was made into films using the spin coating technique. X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to study morphology, structure and crystallite size. The sensing properties of the hybrid structure were studied and excellent response was observed in the temperature range of 50-55°C for 400 ppm LPG, when compared to the individual components of the hybrid. The signal output of the proposed sensor were extremely stable for more than 30 days. Background: Perioperative blood loss and postoperative pain following total knee arthroplasty prevent early mobilisation of patients. The Enhanced Recovery Protocol (ERP) followed for patients in our institute aims at reducing post operative pain, blood loss and length of stay. Materials and Methods: 50 consecutive patients that underwent ERP following total knee arthroplasty with another group of 70 patients that underwent the same surgery without ERP were compared in terms of hidden blood loss and length of hospital stay. Hidden blood loss was calculated according to previously described method. Results: Reduction in blood loss was found in both males (305 ml) and females (150 ml) following ERP. Length of stay reduced by 1.5 days in both genders. Regression analysis showed a significant correlation between body weight and blood loss in females. Conclusion: Enhanced recovery protocol could be a useful tool to reduce patient morbidity and reduce length of inpatient stay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Al-doped polycrystalline nano ZnO (Al-ZnO) thin films with different doping concentrations were successfully prepared by the microwave-assisted successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (mSILAR) technique. The structural analysis along with the orientation of the prepared films was examined by powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns. The deposited film is polycrystalline and the (002) orientation enhanced upon doping. Additional investigations were carried out to study the effect of electron beam irradiation (e-irradiation) on the band gap and photoconductivity of both irradiated and unirradiated samples. Both the Al doping and e-irradiation led to the enhancement of the photoconductivity of prepared materials. This property enables us to tune the properties of materials for various applications by controlling dopant concentrations and e-irradiation. The dependence of photocurrent on e-irradiation of Al-ZnO thin films was not reported previously. Therefore, Al-doped polycrystalline nano-ZnO thin film is a promising material for band gap engineering and for the development of solar cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Prospective memory paradigms are conventionally classified on the basis of event-, time-, or activity-based intention retrieval. In the vast majority of such paradigms, intention retrieval is provoked by some kind of external event. However, prospective memory retrieval cues that prompt intention retrieval in everyday life are commonly endogenous, i.e., linked to a specific imagined retrieval context. We describe herein a novel prospective memory paradigm wherein the endogenous cue is generated by incremental updating of working memory, and investigated the hemodynamic correlates of this task. Methods: Eighteen healthy adult volunteers underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while they performed a prospective memory task where the delayed intention was triggered by an endogenous cue generated by incremental updating of working memory. Working memory and ongoing task control conditions were also administered. Results: The 'endogenous-cue prospective memory condition' with incremental working memory updating was associated with maximum activations in the right rostral prefrontal cortex, and additional activations in the brain regions that constitute the bilateral fronto-parietal network, central and dorsal salience networks as well as cerebellum. In the working memory control condition, maximal activations were noted in the left dorsal anterior insula. Conclusions: Activation of the bilateral dorsal anterior insula, a component of the central salience network, was found to be unique to this 'endogenous-cue prospective memory task' in comparison to previously reported exogenous- and endogenous-cue prospective memory tasks without incremental working memory updating. Thus, the findings of the present study highlight the important role played by the dorsal anterior insula in incremental working memory updating that is integral to our endogenous-cue prospective memory task. For efficient social interactions, humans have developed means to predict and understand others' behavior often with reference to intentions and desires. To infer others' intentions, however, one must assume that the other is an agent with a mind and mental states. With two experiments, this study examined if the human perceptual system is sensitive to detecting human agents, based on only subtle behavioral cues. Participants observed robots, which performed pointing gestures interchangeably to the left or right with one of their two arms. Onset times of the pointing movements could have been pre-programmed, human-controlled (Experiment 1), or modeled after a human behavior (Experiment 2). The task was to determine if the observed behavior was controlled by a human or by a computer program, without any information about what parameters of behavior this judgment should be based on. Results showed that participants were able to detect human behavior above chance in both experiments. Moreover, participants were asked to discriminate a letter (F/T) presented on the left or the right side of a screen. The letter could have been either validly cued by the robot (location that the robot pointed to coincided with the location of the letter) or invalidly cued (the robot pointed to the opposite location than the letter was presented). In this cueing task, target discrimination was better for the valid versus invalid conditions in Experiment 1 where a human face was presented centrally on a screen throughout the experiment. This effect was not significant in Experiment 2 where participants were exposed only to a robotic face. In sum, present results show that the human perceptual system is sensitive to subtleties of human behavior. Earlier theorizing suggested that an (artificial) agent that combines persuasive strategies will be more persuasive. Therefore, the current research investigated whether a robot that uses two persuasive strategies is more persuasive than a robot that uses only one. Two crucial persuasive strategies that humans use in face-to-face persuasion are gazing and gestures, and therefore we studied the combined and individual contribution of these two persuasive strategies (gestures and gazing) on the persuasiveness of a storytelling robot. A robot told a classical persuasive story about the consequences of lying to forty-eight participants, and was programmed to use (persuasive) gestures (or not) and gazing (or not). Next, we asked participants to evaluate the character in the story thereby assessing the robot's persuasiveness. Results presented evidence a robot's persuasiveness is increased when gazing is used. When the robot used gestures, its persuasiveness only increased when it also used gazing. When the robot did not use gazing, using gestures diminished the robot's persuasiveness. Regenerative medicine is an evolving interdisciplinary topic of research involving numerous technological methods that utilize stem cells to repair damaged tissues. Particularly, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a great tool in regenerative medicine because of their lack of tumorogenicity, immunogenicity and ability to perform immunomodulatory as well as anti-inflammatory functions. Numerous studies have investigated the role of MSCs in tissue repair and modulation of allogeneic immune responses. MSCs derived from different sources hold unique regenerative potential as they are self-renewing and can differentiate into chondrocytes, osteoblasts, adipocytes, cardiomyocytes, hepatocytes, endothelial and neuronal cells, among which neuronal-like cells have gained special interest. MSCs also have the ability to secrete multiple bioactive molecules capable of stimulating recovery of injured cells and inhibiting inflammation. In this review we focus on neural differentiation potential of MSCs isolated from different sources and how certain growth factors/small molecules can be used to derive neuronal phenotypes from MSCs. We also discuss the efficacy of MSCs when transplanted in vivo and how they can generate certain neurons and lead to relief or recovery of the diseased condition. Furthermore, we have tried to evaluate the appropriate merits of different sources of MSCs with respect to their propensity towards neurological differentiation as well as their effectiveness in preclinical studies. This paper reviews the use of socially interactive robots to assist in the therapy of children with autism. The extent to which the robots were successful in helping the children in their social, emotional and communication deficits was investigated. Child-robot interactions were scrutinized with respect to the different target behaviors that are to be elicited from a child during therapy. These behaviors were thoroughly examined with respect to a child's development needs. Most importantly, experimental data from the surveyed works were extracted and analysed in terms of the target behaviors and of how each robot was used during a therapy session to achieve these behaviors. The study concludes by categorizing the different therapeutic roles that these robots were observed to play, and highlights the important design features that enable them to achieve high levels of effectiveness in autism therapy.
