Purpose: This study examined the contribution of work, non-work and individual factors on workers' symptoms of psychological distress, depression and emotional exhaustion based on the multilevel determinants of workers' mental health model. Methods: Data from the SALVEO Study were collected in 2009-2012 from a sample of 1,954 employees nested in 63 workplaces in the province of Quebec (Canada). Multilevel regression models were used to analyse the data. Results: Altogether, variables explain 32.2 % of psychological distress, 48.4 % of depression and 48.8 % of emotional exhaustion. Mental health outcomes varied slightly between workplaces and skill utilisation, physical and psychological demands, abusive supervision, interpersonal conflicts and job insecurity are related to the outcomes. Living in couple, having young children at home, family-to-work conflict, work-to-family conflict, strained marital and parental relations, and social support outside the workplace associated with the outcomes. Most of the individual characteristics also correlated with the three outcomes. Importantly, non-work and individual factors modulated the number and type of work factors related to the three outcomes. Neuroblastoma cells are undifferentiated cells derived from the neural crest and are commonly used as models for studying neural function. Mouse N1E-115 neuroblastoma cells are derived from cancerous tissue and provide a model for studying the oncogenesis of neural cells. As growth hormone (GH) has been implicated as an autocrine or paracrine involved in neural regulation and in the induction or progression of cancer, the possibility that N1E-115 cells are sites of GH production and GH action was assessed. Using RT-PCR, cultured N1E-115 cells were found to express the mouse GH and GH receptor (GHR) genes. Immunocytochemistry demonstrated that both of the translated proteins (GH and its receptor) were abundantly present in the cytoplasm of these cells and their co-localization was established by confocal cytochemistry. GH action in these cells was determined in cells cultured for 72 h in the presence or absence of 10–6 M or 10–9 M mouse GH, which induced neurite sprouting and increased axon growth. In summary, the expression of GH and its receptor in GH responsive tumor-derived N1E-115 neuroblastoma cells suggests they provide a useful experimental model to assess GH actions in neural function or neural oncogenesis. Roles of pituitary growth hormone (GH) in female reproduction are well established. Autocrine and/or paracrine actions of GH in the mammalian ovary have additionally been proposed, although whether the ovary is an extra-pituitary site of GH expression in the laying hen is uncertain. This possibility has therefore been assessed in the ovaries of Hy-Line hens before (between 10–16 weeks of age) and after (week 17) the onset of egg laying. Reverse transcription/polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis has consistently detected a full-length (690 bp) pituitary GH cDNA in ovarian stroma from 10 weeks of age, although GH expression is far lower than that in the pituitary gland or hypothalamus. GH mRNA is also present in small (>1–4 mm diameter) follicles after their ontogenetic appearance at 14 weeks of age and in all other developing follicles after 16 weeks of age (>4–30 mm diameter). Immunoreactivity for GH is similarly present in the ovarian stroma from 10 weeks of age and in small (<4 mm diameter) and large (>4–30 mm) follicles from 14 and 16 weeks of age, respectively. The relative intensity of GH staining in the ovarian follicles is consistently greater in the granulosa cells than in the thecal cells and is comparable with that in the follicular epithelium. A 321-bp fragment of GH receptor (GHR) cDNA, coding for the intracellular domain of the receptor, has also been detected by RT-PCR in the ovary and is present in stromal tissue by 10 weeks of age, in small follicles (<4 mm diameter) by 14 weeks of age, and in larger follicles (>4–30 mm diameter) from 16 weeks. GHR immunoreactivity has similarly been detected, like GH, in the developing ovary and in all follicles and is more intense in granulosa cells than in the theca interna or externa. The expression and location of the GH gene therefore parallels that of the GHR gene during ovarian development in the laying hen, as does the appearance of GH and GHR immunoreactivity. A novel variant of chicken growth hormone (cGH) that is severely truncated has recently been discovered in the neural retina. It is, however, unknown whether this protein binds to GH receptors (GHRs) and has biological activity. This possibility has therefore been addressed by homology modeling, using human (h)GH as a template because it is the only GH molecule with a crystal structure and because hGH binds to cGH receptors (cGHRs). Most of the residues of the small (s)cGH model fitted the hGH template, apart from two restricted regions from Ser 12 to Gln 20 and from Ser 55 to Val 58. The scGH model differs, however, from hGH in structure: hGH is composed of a four-helix bundle, whereas scGH has three main helices. Helices 2, 3, and 4 of hGH correspond to helices 1, 2, and 3 of scGH, but they are longer by one, four, and one residues, respectively. The secondary structure of the C-terminus of scGH is therefore similar to C-terminal hGH. The N-terminus of scGH is, however, severely truncated, lacking the residues of the full-length molecule derived from exons 1, 2, and 3. The N-terminus of scGH also includes 20 residues derived from intron C of full-length cGH. The predicted structure of its N-terminus has no classical secondary structure (α-helix or β-sheet), whereas the N-terminus of hGH is composed of helix 1 and two mini-helices located between helix 1 and 2. This difference in ribbon structure results in a difference in the overall shape of the scGH model and hGH. The possibility that scGH could bind to a GHR dimer was assessed by examining the primary and hypothetical tertiary structure of scGH. hGH binds the extracellular domain (ECD) of two GHRs sequentially at its binding site 1 (or high affinity site) then at its binding site 2 (or low affinity site). Sequence alignment of scGH with hGH demonstrates that scGH lacks three key residues (of 14) at site 1 and nine residues (of 15) at site 2. It is therefore unlikely that tight binding of ECD1 to the site 1 of scGH could occur. ScGH also lacks most of the site 2 residues, suggesting that it is unlikely that ECD2 would bind to the scGH model. Growth hormone (GH) mRNA and protein have recently been localized in the neural retina, of embryonic chicks, in which exogenous GH promotes cell survival. GH is also expressed in the rat CNS, in which it has neuroprotective roles, although its presence in the rat neural retina is unknown and is the focus of the present study. GH immunoreactivity, to a 22-kDa protein, was present in extracts of fetal (embryonic day [ED]17) eyes and in extracts from the neural retinas of newborn pups, comparable to GH immunoreactivity in pituitary extracts. The GH immunoreactivity in the neural retina was widespread but was most intense in large rounded cells in the retinal ganglion cell (RGC) layer and in the optic fiber layer derived from the axons of the RGCs. A 693-bp cDNA was also generated by the RT-PCR of RNA extracted from the eyes of ED17 rats and from the neural retinas and eyes of newborn rats, when amplified in the presence of oligonucleotide primers for the rat GH cDNA. Expression of the GH gene in the neural retina was also shown by specific in situ hybridization of an antisense GH riboprobe to cells in the neural retina, particularly those in the RGC layers of fetal and adult rat eyes. The lung is well established as being a postnatal target site for growth hormone (GH) action, since pathophysiological states of GH excess and deficiency are both associated with impaired pulmonary function. Pituitary GH is therefore probably involved in normal lung growth or development, although perinatal lung development occurs prior to the differentiation of pituitary somatotrophs and the ontogeny of pituitary GH secretion. The lung itself may, however, be a site of GH production during prenatal development, since a specific GH-response gene (a marker of GH activity) is expressed in the lungs of early chick embryos, in which GH immunoreactivity is widespread in many other peripheral tissues. We have assessed this possibility in embryonic chicks. A 690-bp cDNA, identical in size and nucleotide sequence to the full-length pituitary GH transcript, was amplified by reverse transcription/polymerase chain reaction from total RNA extracted from the lungs of embryos at 11, 13, 15, and 18 days of the 21-day incubation period. This transcript was localized by in situ hybridization to mesenchymal and epithelial cells of the developing lungs, in which specific GH immunoreactivity was similarly located. Intense GH immunoreactivity was also present after embryonic day 15 (ED15) in the smooth muscle surrounding blood vessels in the lung and surrounding the bronchioles. Lung GH immunoreactivity was primarily associated with a 15-kDa protein, rather than the 26-kDa protein in the pituitary gland. After the onset of pituitary GH secretion (at ED17), GH mRNA was barely detectable in the lungs of ED20 embryos, at the start of lung breathing. GH immunoreactivity was, however, still present in some cells in the lungs of ED20 embryos. GH-receptor mRNA and immunoreactivity were also widespread and abundant within the embryonic lung. Lung GH may thus have autocrine or paracrine roles in lung development or in pulmonary function prior to the ontogeny of the pituitary gland and the appearance of GH in peripheral plasma. This study applies organizational justice principles to human resource decisions made during a crisis situation. Three-hundred and sixty-six working individuals of ice storm affected households responded to a telephone survey that included measures of interactional, procedural and distributive justice, organizational commitment and job satisfaction. Confirmatory Factor Analysis suggested collapsing the interactional and procedural justice measures into one measure of procedural treatment. Overall, there was considerable support for the relevance of procedural justice and its interaction with distributive justice in predicting the work attitudes of employee following a disaster. Multiple regression analyses revealed that perceptions of procedural justice most strongly predicted job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Consistent with existing theory, an interaction between distributive and procedural was found to predict job satisfaction. The predicted interaction was not detected for organizational commitment. In this review we consider the evidence that growth hormone (GH) acts in the embryo as a local growth, differentiation, and cell survival factor. Because both GH and its receptors are present in the early embryo before the functional differentiation of pituitary somatotrophs and before the establishment of a functioning circulatory system, the conditions are such that GH may be a member of the large battery of autocrine/paracrine growth factors that control embryonic development. It has been clearly established that GH is able to exert direct effects, independent of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), on the differentiation, proliferation, and survival of cells in a wide variety of tissues in the embryo, fetus, and adult. The signaling pathways behind these effects of GH are now beginning to be determined, establishing early extrapituitary GH as a bona fide developmental growth factor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is well-established that growth hormone (GH) is present in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves of embryonic chicks, prior to the differentiation of pituitary somatotrophs, but its presence and distribution in retinal tissues is controversial. The possible presence of GH and GH mRNA in retinal tissues of early embryos has therefore been further evaluated. A 466-bp fragment of the pituitary GH cDNA, derived from a portion of exon 3 and spanning exons 4 and 5, was amplified by RT-PCR from reverse-transcribed mRNA from the pituitary glands of juvenile chicks and from the whole eye, neural retina, and retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) of embryonic-day (ED) 9 chick embryos. In ED 9 embryos, GH immunoreactivity was demonstrated in the choroid and neural retina, in which it was particularly abundant in a layer of cells with the location and morphological appearance of retinal ganglion cells. GH immunoreactivity was also present in tissue sections of the RPE that were bleached to remove the melanin pigment. The intense GH staining in the RPE of ED 9 embryos was also revealed using a fluorescein-labeled GH antibody and confocal microscopy. At the ultrastructural level, GH detected by immunogold electron microscopy was present in the cytoplasm of RPE and neural retinal cells of ED 9 embryos. Although not associated with secretory granules, GH in the RPE was particularly associated with the membranes of the melanin granules. These results demonstrate that the neural retina and RPE are extrapituitary sites of GH production in early chick embryos, prior to the differentiation of the pituitary gland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is now well established that growth hormone (GH) gene expression is not restricted to the pituitary gland and occurs in many extrapituitary tissues, including the central and peripheral nervous systems. Indeed, GH gene expression occurs in the brain prior to its ontogenic appearance in the pituitary gland, and GH may have evolved phylogenetically as a neuropeptide, rather than as an endocrine. The possible relationship between the circadian rhythm of blood levels of melatonin and corticosterone in ring dove ( Streptopelia risoria) subjected to both immobilization stress and immobilization stress plus dexamethasone treatment were studied. The results show changes in the circadian rhythm of melatonin, with increased day-time levels in situations of stress accompanied by increased corticosterone levels. The highest blood melatonin levels over the 24 h of the study were obtained when the animals were treated with dexamethasone and then subjected to stress. Given the antioxidant role of melatonin, our results support the idea of melatonin-corticosterone coupling with the possibility that melatonin released in situations of stress counteracts the adverse effects of glucocorticoids on the organism. The expression of the thyrotropin (TSH) gene in the pituitary gland is thought to be dependent upon the pituitary-specific transcription factor, Pit-1. TSH immunoreactivity is, however, widespread in extrapituitary tissues, and the possibility that this may reflect a widespread distribution of Pit-1 was therefore investigated in embryonic chicks, prior to the ontogenic differentiation of the pituitary gland. TSH immunoreactivity in chick embryos at the end of the first trimester of the 21d incubation period was present in discrete cells in the developing brain (particularly in ependymal cells lining the diocoele and mesocoele and in cells lining the otic vesicle), spinal cord (ependymal cells), liver (hepatocytes), lungs (in the linings of the bronchi), gut (in the linings of the proventriculus) and limb bud (in skin, muscle, bone and nerve fibers). In some of these tissues (particularly in brain and spinal cord ependymal cells, cells in the otic vesicle and in liver hepatocytes), the distribution of TSH immunoreactivity was overlapped by the distribution of immunoreactive Pit-1, suggesting Pit-1 involvement in TSH expression in these sites. However, in other tissues (e.g., the trigeminal nerve in the head and the marginal mantle layer of the spinal cord), Pit-1 immunoreactivity was intense but TSH immunoreactivity was marginal. Conversely, other tissues (e.g., cells in the skin, blood vessels, limb bud, bronchus, proventriculus, and cardiopleural cavities) had intense TSH staining but little, if any, Pit-1 immunoreactivity. The expression of the TSH gene in these tissues would thus appear to be Pit-1 independent. These results demonstrate the presence of Pit-1 in pituitary and extrapituitary tissues of the domestic fowl and suggest the involvement of Pit-1 in the extrapituitary expression of TSH in chick embryos may be tissue-specific. The presence of growth hormone (GH) binding sites and GH-receptor (GHR)-immunoreactive proteins in the brain suggests it is a target site for GH action. This could, however, reflect the presence of GH-binding proteins (GHBP) that are not linked to intracellular signal-transduction mechanisms, rather than authentic receptors. The possibility that GH has actions in the brain therefore has been examined by determining an intracellular mediator of GH action. The mechanism of GH action involves the induction of a number of specific GH-response genes. In chickens, a novel GH-responsive gene (GHRG-1) has been identified as an intracellular marker of GH action, since this gene is not expressed in GH-resistant dwarfs with dysfunctional GHRs and in normal chickens it is upregulated by exogenous GH. In normal chickens GHRG-1 mRNA is also abundant and widespread in the brain. In the cerebellum it is specifically localized in the cerebellar folia. It is present in most cells in the granular layers of the gray matter but is present in only a small number of scattered cells in the molecular layer and white matter. Intense labeling for GHRG-1 mRNA is also present in the large Purkinje cells and their dendrites at the interface between the molecular and granular layers. Labeling is also seen in the interneuronal basket cells projecting onto the Purkinje cells. In the mid-brain, cells in the ocular nerve complex and the tractus isthmoopticus were strongly stained for GHRG-1 mRNA, with less intense staining in the central gray. In the hypothalamus, numerous small cells in periventricular locations and ependymal cells lining the III ventricle also label for GHRG-1 mRNA. These results clearly show, for the first time, the expression of a GH-responsive gene in neural tissues. Moreover, as GH- and GHR-immunoreactivity previously has been shown to be present in the same tissues expressing GHRG-1, it is possible that GH acts as an autocrine or paracrine within the CNS. Growth hormone (GH), as its name suggests, is obligatory for growth and development. It is, however, also required for sexual differentiation and pubertal maturation and participates in gonadal steroidogenesis and gametogenesis. These roles are likely to reflect the endocrine actions of pituitary GH, directly at gonadal sites and indirectly via hepatic insulin-like growth factor-1. However, because GH is also produced in gonadal tissues, it may act in paracrine or autocrine ways to regulate local processes that are strategically regulated by pituitary GH. Metal halide perovskite semiconductors possess outstanding characteristics for optoelectronic applications including but not limited to photovoltaics. Low-dimensional and nanostructured motifs impart added functionality which can be exploited further. Moreover, wider cation composition tunability and tunable surface ligand properties of colloidal quantum dot (QD) perovskites now enable unprecedented device architectures which differ from thin-film perovskites fabricated from solvated molecular precursors. Here, using layer-by-layer deposition of perovskite QDs, we demonstrate solar cells with abrupt compositional changes throughout the perovskite film. We utilize this ability to abruptly control composition to create an internal heterojunction that facilitates charge separation at the internal interface leading to improved photocarrier harvesting. We show how the photovoltaic performance depends upon the heterojunction position, as well as the composition of each component, and we describe an architecture that greatly improves the performance of perovskite QD photovoltaics. Metal halide perovskites have wide tunability in both material and device structure. Here Zhao et al. fabricate heterojunctions of colloidal perovskite quantum dots with different composition using layer-by-layer deposition and demonstrate improved photovoltaic performance with enhanced photocarrier harvesting. Thin film materials for photovoltaics such as cadmium telluride (CdTe), copper-indium diselenide-based chalcopyrites (CIGS), and lead iodide-based perovskites offer the potential of lower solar module capital costs and improved performance to microcrystalline silicon. However, for decades understanding and controlling hole and electron concentration in these polycrystalline films has been extremely challenging and limiting. Ionic bonding between constituent atoms often leads to tenacious intrinsic compensating defect chemistries that are difficult to control. Device modeling indicates that increasing CdTe hole density while retaining carrier lifetimes of several nanoseconds can increase solar cell efficiency to 25%. This paper describes in-situ Sb, As, and P doping and post-growth annealing that increases hole density from historic 1014 limits to 1016-1017 cm−3 levels without compromising lifetime in thin polycrystalline CdTe films, which opens paths to advance solar performance and achieve costs below conventional electricity sources.
