Objective: Facial anthropometric data vary significantly within the Indian population due to the racial, ethnic and geographic diversity. The anthropometric data of a given ethnic community may not match the other due to diverse ethnic variations, and hence, this study is intended to review the facial anthropometric data pertaining to the diverse Indian populace through a systematic literature survey. Materials and Method: An electronic search done on Medline, Embase and Central databases was utilized to conduct a systematic review of literature. The available data were analyzed based on the various esthetic subunits of the face. The following inclusion criteria were considered: (1) studies depicting the anthropometric data of any ethnic group identified as belonging to India, (2) studies originating from Indian subcontinent, (3) studies which included data of male and female subjects separately and (4) articles in English language only. The following exclusion criteria were considered: (1) atudies conducted on participants with severe malocclusion, developmental craniofacial anomalies, post-traumatic facial deformities or with a history of previous craniofacial or cosmetic surgery, (2) studies which did not specify the anthropometric landmarks used to obtain the measurements, (3) studies in which the statistical analysis was not provided, or if data were grouped across genders and (4) editorials, commentaries, case reports, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and articles not available in English language. Results: Twenty-one articles met the inclusion criteria. Majority of the Indians, particularly men, seem to have a mesoproscopic facial phenotype. The vertical and horizontal facial dimensions of the Indian male are comparably larger than the Indian female. There is sexual dimorphism among the Indian population with regard to the upper and lower thirds of the face, with little or no gender difference as regards the middle third of the face. It was observed that the nasal dimensions of the Indian race were not compatible with that of the occidental, oriental or the western race. The overall facial structure and the upper half of the face were critical in determining facial attractiveness in Indian males while the lower half of the face and the mandibular contour were critical in determining facial attractiveness in females. Conclusion: It is observed that there is a paucity of facial anthropometric data for the Indian population considering the ethnic, racial and geographic diversity. Since the prevalence of craniofacial anomalies and dentofacial deformities in India is high and thus the scope for corrective surgery, it is important to compile baseline facial anthropometric data based on the ethnic diversity of the Indian population. Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common in children with syndromic craniosynostosis (SC). However, objective data on the treatment of OSA in children with SC remain inadequate. This study aimed to explore the efficacy of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in the management of OSA in children with SC. Methods: A retrospective study was performed in children with SC and OSA diagnosed by polysomnography (PSG), which was defined as an apnea hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 1. Patients were included if they were treated with CPAP and had baseline PSG and follow-up sleep studies. Clinical and demographic data were collected from all enrolled subjects. Results: A total of 45 children with SC and OSA were identified, with an average age of 6.8 ± 4.7 years. Among them, 36 cases had moderate to severe OSA (22 with severe OSA) and received CPAP therapy followed by post-treatment sleep studies. Notably, there was a significant reduction in the AHI observed after CPAP treatment (3.0 [IQR: 1.7, 4.6] versus 38.6 [IQR: 18.2, 53.3] events/h; P < 0.001). Background: An accurate diagnosis and an appropriate treatment are important parts of successful rhinoplasty. We proposed a new definition for alar flares to guide our clinical work. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on patients with alar flares from July 2017 to July 2021, and the follow-up time ranged from 12 to 27 months, mean of 16 months. We defined the alar flare angle by the formation of two lines: the line that connects the alar to the alar root point and line that connects the alar to the pronasale. The alar flare angle, interalar distance and nasal base width were measured, and alar wedge excision or alar base excision and tip elevation were performed. Scars, complications and satisfaction scales were evaluated after surgery. Through an analysis of the database, we found that the ideal alar flare angle was between 130 degrees and 140 degrees. If it was less than 130 degrees, it represented alar flares, and patients asked for alar surgery. Results: A total of 33 patients were included. All patients underwent tip elevation, 12 patients underwent external alar wedge excision, and 5 patients underwent external alar wedge excision and alar base excision. External alar wedge excision can be used to completely correct alar flares, and in our study, the alar flare angles were more than 130 degrees after surgery. One patient complained of an acceptable scar, and there was no infection or alar deformity. All patients were satisfied. Conclusions: We proposed a new definition in which an alar flare angle less than 130 degrees can be diagnosed as an alar flare. Background: We designed a survey to evaluate preferences of facial appearance in transgender male (TM), transgender female (TF) and gender nonbinary patients to better inform goals of facial gender affirming surgery (FGAS) in gender nonbinary patients. Methods: TM/TF and nonbinary patients > 18 years old were identified via retrospective chart review and distributed an anonymized survey via email from October 3 to December 31, 2022. To assess facial preferences, AI-generated and open-source portraits were edited to create five image sets with a range of features from masculine to feminine for the forehead, mandible/chin and hairline. Data were analyzed using Fisher's exact tests and ANOVA in R-Studio. Results: Survey response rate was 32% (180 patients identified via chart review, 58 respondents; TM = 5, TF = 39, nonbinary = 14). TM and TF patients as well as TF and nonbinary patients had significantly different preferences for all regions (p < 0.005; all series), while TM and nonbinary patients did not (p => 0.05; all series). TF patients consistently selected 4s with neutral or more feminine features. TM and nonbinary patients, however, demonstrated no consistent preference for either male or female features but rather a range of responses spanning extremes of both masculine and feminine options. When stratified by sex assigned at birth, nonbinary patients consistently identified preferences opposite to their assigned gender. Conclusion: Gender nonbinary and TM patients appear to have uniquely individual preferences regarding facial appearance that do not fit into classically masculine or feminine patterns/phenotypes. As a result, we recommend individualized preoperative planning for FGAS to achieve the optimal result in these patient populations. Introduction: Do smaller scars lead to higher patient satisfaction? The aim of this study is to analyze long-term satisfaction of patients who underwent abdominoplasty after massive weight loss. Methods: Patients inclusion criteria: no previous abdominal remodeling procedures, previous bariatric surgery followed by a weight loss of at least 30 kg, weight stability for at least one year, good understanding of the Italian language and standardized pre- and postoperative photographs. We divided the population in 2 groups based on the surgical procedure: group 1, conventional abdominoplasty, and group 2, anchor-line abdominoplasty. All patients presented scars in the epigastric and mesogastric region resulting from previous laparoscopic or laparotomic bariatric surgery and/or other laparoscopic or laparotomic procedures. At least 2 years after surgery, we administered the Italian version of the post-operative BODY-Q module and the SCAR-Q questionnaire. Results: We enrolled 20 males and 69 females aged between 25 and 55 years, with a mean follow-up of 2 years. Analyzing the questionnaires, it resulted that patients undergoing anchor-line abdominoplasty were significantly more satisfied in the body perception of the result (p = 0.035) and in the satisfaction with abdomen domain (p = 0.0015) compared to the conventional abdominoplasty group. Scars assessment with the SCAR-Q did not show any significant differences between the groups. Conclusion: Despite its long scars, the anchor-line pattern shows an overall higher satisfaction, due to the possibility of reducing the abdomen both cranio-caudally and circumferentially. These findings might be an important guide when approaching abdominoplasty in post-bariatric patients, debunking the myth "shorter is better". Background: Anthropology is a scientific discipline which applies scientific methods to identify and quantitate inter-individual variations in body structure and function. Anthropometry assesses craniofacial dysmorphology in genetic disorders and helps to detect phenotypic differences in diseases with common underlying cause. This study is part of a comprehensive cross-sectional study of craniofacial and oral findings in Egyptian school children. This paper focused on establishing the norms of Egyptian male school children and its utility in determining the differences in facial measurements of a child with Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS). Thirty craniofacial measurements were taken from 55 healthy Egyptian school children aged 12–14 years with mean age 13 ± 0.64 and a PWS child aged 13.6 years. The PWS measurements were compared with healthy children of the same age using computed Z-score. Results: Morphological face height of the PWS child was within the normal range. However, upper face height and nose height were significantly lower with Z-scores of - 3.18 and - 2.7, respectively; right and left mandibular body length and upper lip height were significantly higher than the mean of healthy children with corresponding Z-scores of 2.95, 2.48, and 2.33. Conclusions: By establishing the norms of Egyptian male school children and utilizing these data, we can identify the difference in facial measurements among children with abnormalities like PWS. This information can be used during periodic checkups as a simple, non-invasive, and economical method for the detection of these abnormalities.

Distraction osteogenesis is utilized to increase intracranial volume in the treatment of restrictive pathologies, most commonly syndromic synostosis. Children too young for open calvarial vault expansion or other systemic or local contraindications to a direct reconstructive approach benefit greatly from distraction osteogenesis, typically addressing posterior vault expansion. Wound infection, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, device failure, need for a second surgery for removal, and cost, are issues that can limit the use of this approach. These challenges are more pronounced in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to lack of access to the device, the financial burden of the need for a second surgery, and the severity of the implications of infection and CSF leak. Over the last five decades, there has been an increased acceptance of bioresorbable instrumentation in craniofacial surgery. Poly L-lactic acid, polyglycolic acid, and polydioxanone are the most commonly used polymers. New resorbable fixation tools such as ultrasound-activated pins and heat-activated pins are superior to conventional bioresorbable screws in allowing attachment to thinner bone plates. In this paper, we present a review of the literature on cranial vault distraction and the use of bioresorbable materials and propose a novel design of a fully absorbable cranial distractor system using external magnetic distraction control, eliminating the need for external activation ports and a second surgery to remove the hardware. Purpose: Reconstruction with vascularized bone grafts after ablative surgery and subsequent dental rehabilitation with implants is often challenging; however, it helps improve the patient's quality of life. This retrospective case–control study aimed to determine the implant survival/success rates in different vascularized bone grafts and potential risk factors. Methods: Only patients who received implants in free vascularized bone grafts between 2012 and 2020 were included. The free flap donor sites were the fibula, iliac crest, and scapula. The prosthetic restoration had to be completed, and the observation period had to be over one year after implantation. Implant success was defined according to the Health Scale for Dental Implants criteria. Results: Sixty-two patients with 227 implants were included. The implant survival rate was 86.3% after an average of 48.7 months. The causes of implant loss were peri-implantitis (n = 24), insufficient osseointegration (n = 1), removal due to tumor recurrence (n = 1), and osteoradionecrosis (n = 5). Of all implants, 52.4% were classified as successful, 19.8% as compromised, and 27.8% as failed. Removal of osteosynthesis material prior to or concurrent with implant placement resulted in significantly better implant success than material not removed (p = 0.035). Localization of the graft in the mandibular region was associated with a significantly better implant survival (p = 0.034) and success (p = 0.002), also a higher Karnofsky Performance Status Scale score with better implant survival (p = 0.014). Conclusion: Implants placed in vascularized grafts showed acceptable survival rates despite the potential risk factors often present in these patient groups. Purpose of Review: The purpose of this review is to highlight the evidence of microvascular dysfunction in bone and marrow and its relation to poor skeletal outcomes in diabetes mellitus. Recent Findings: Diabetes mellitus is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, which may lead to microangiopathy and macroangiopathy. Micro- and macroangiopathy have been diagnosed in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, coinciding with osteopenia, osteoporosis, enhanced fracture risk and delayed fracture healing. Microangiopathy has been reported in the skeleton, correlating with reduced blood flow and perfusion, vasomotor dysfunction, microvascular rarefaction, reduced angiogenic capabilities, and augmented vascular permeability. Summary: Microangiopathy within the skeleton may be detrimental to bone and manifest as, among other clinical abnormalities, reduced mass, enhanced fracture risk, and delayed fracture healing. More investigations are required to elucidate the various mechanisms by which diabetic microvascular dysfunction impacts the skeleton. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a necessity to use digital data and tools when developing children's products. The present study was designed to provide digital methods to guide product development and problem-solving when using 3D body scans and face mask simulations for 6-year-olds. First, key facial measurements were evaluated to better understand the variables that might affect face mask sizing for children for the selected age group. Then the findings were used to optimize the size and fit of a cloth face mask design. Next, the fit of the digital, optimized face mask design was tested on 44 head scans from Size North America by using subjective and objective fit assessment techniques. Study findings suggested that width and length-related measurements are critical for children's face masks. Body mass index (BMI) and ethnicity were also found to be the main factors for identifying size ranges in the selected age group. As BMIs increase, face mask sizes should increase. Additionally, the results indicated a need to use a larger database of children of all ethnicities to design an inclusive facemask that would provide a comfortable and protective fit for different facial proportions. Although the results cannot be generalized due to the case study approach of the present research and its focus on methods development, they can provide manufacturers, designers, and researchers with guidelines on how to develop proper sizing and use digital data to conduct functional fit analysis for facemasks. Background: Complex pathophysiological changes accompany denervation-induced skeletal muscle atrophy, but no effective treatment strategies exist. Our previous study indicated that extracellular vesicles derived from skin-derived precursors-derived Schwann cells (SKP-SC-EVs) can effectively mitigate denervation-induced muscle atrophy. However, the specific molecular mechanism remains unclear. Methods and results: In this study, we used bioinformatics methods to scrutinize the impact of SKP-SC-EVs on gene expression in denervation-induced skeletal muscle atrophy. We found that SKP-SC-EVs altered the expression of 358 genes in denervated skeletal muscles. The differentially expressed genes were predominantly participated in biological processes, including cell cycle, inflammation, immunity, and adhesion, and signaling pathways, such as FoxO and PI3K.Using the Molecular Complex Detection (MCODE) plugin, we identified the two clusters with the highest score: cluster 1 comprised 37 genes, and Cluster 2 consisted of 24 genes. Then, fifty hub genes were identified using CytoHubba. The intersection of Hub genes and genes obtained by MCODE showed that all 23 genes related to the cell cycle in Cluster 1 were hub genes, and 5 genes in Cluster 2 were hub genes and associated with inflammation. Conclusions: Overall, the differentially expressed genes in denervated skeletal muscle following SKP-SC-EVs treatment are primarily linked to the cell cycle and inflammation. Consequently, promoting proliferation and inhibiting inflammation may be the critical process in which SKP-SC-EVs delay denervation-induced muscle atrophy. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the molecular mechanism of SKP-SC-EVs delaying denervation-induced muscle atrophy, offering a promising new avenue for muscle atrophy treatment. Background: Just like linear nasal parameters, angular nasal parameters form the basis of any rhinoplasty, especially in various ethnic groups to maintain the specific racial characteristics while creating an aesthetic nose. The objective of this study was to measure and study the outcomes of angular nasal parameters in north–east Indians and to contrast them with available literature on Oriental, Caucasian and Indian population in general. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in 150 young adults from north–east region of India. Surface landmarks were marked, and standard photographs were taken. Nine angular parameters were measured from the left lateral and basal view photographs of the face using computer software. Data were analysed by Student's 't'-test for parametric data and Mann–Whitney U-test for non-parametric data using SPSS v.25. Results: All the angular measurements were found to be greater in females except nasofacial angle, columella tip angle and interaxial angle. Differences in nasofrontal angle, columella labial angle, nasofacial angle and columella tip angle between males and females were statistically significant. Nasofrontal and columella labial angles were more acute in the study population compared to Caucasians, Orientals and other Indians while nasofacial, interaxial and interalar angles were larger. Conclusion: The north–east Indian nose is dissimilar to that of rest of the country as well as that of Caucasians and Orientals with respect to angular parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Notoriously characterized by subjectivity and lack of solid scientific validation, reporting aesthetic outcome in plastic surgery is usually based on ill-defined end points and subjective measures very often from the patients' and/or providers' perspective. With the tremendous increase in demand for all types of aesthetic procedures, there is an urgent need for better understanding of aesthetics and beauty in addition to reliable and objective outcome measures to quantitate what is perceived as beautiful and attractive. In an era of evidence-based medicine, recognition of the importance of science with evidence-based approach to aesthetic surgery is long overdue. View the many limitations of conventional outcome evaluation tools of aesthetic interventions, objective outcome analysis provided by tools described to be reliable is being investigated such as advanced artificial intelligence (AI). The current review is intended to analyze available evidence regarding advantages as well as limitations of this technology in objectively documenting outcome of aesthetic interventions. It has shown that some AI applications such as facial emotions recognition systems are capable of objectively measuring and quantitating patients' reported outcomes and defining aesthetic interventions success from the patients' perspective. Though not reported yet, observers' satisfaction with the results and their appreciation of aesthetic attributes may also be measured in the same manner. Perturbations in K+ have long been considered a key factor in skeletal muscle fatigue. However, the exercise-induced changes in K+ intra-to-extracellular gradient is by itself insufficiently large to be a major cause for the force decrease during fatigue unless combined to other ion gradient changes such as for Na+. Whilst several studies described K+-induced force depression at high extracellular [K+] ([K+]e), others reported that small increases in [K+]e induced potentiation during submaximal activation frequencies, a finding that has mostly been ignored. There is evidence for decreased Cl− ClC-1 channel activity at muscle activity onset, which may limit K+-induced force depression, and large increases in ClC-1 channel activity during metabolic stress that may enhance K+ induced force depression. The ATP-sensitive K+ channel (KATP channel) is also activated during metabolic stress to lower sarcolemmal excitability. Taking into account all these findings, we propose a revised concept in which K+ has two physiological roles: (1) K+-induced potentiation and (2) K+-induced force depression. During low-moderate intensity muscle contractions, the K+-induced force depression associated with increased [K+]e is prevented by concomitant decreased ClC-1 channel activity, allowing K+-induced potentiation of sub-maximal tetanic contractions to dominate, thereby optimizing muscle performance. When ATP demand exceeds supply, creating metabolic stress, both KATP and ClC-1 channels are activated. KATP channels contribute to force reductions by lowering sarcolemmal generation of action potentials, whilst ClC-1 channel enhances the force-depressing effects of K+, thereby triggering fatigue. Objective: The present study aims to compare β-thalassemia major patients and healthy individuals in terms of anthropometric characteristics and changes in craniofacial profile. Subjects and method: Craniofacial anthropometric measurements were performed on a total of 422 subjects (199 β-thalassemia major patients and 223 healthy individuals) by using a millimetric caliper and tape measure on 19 anthropometric parameters (8 horizontal, 10 vertical, and 1 head circumference) in cranial, facial, nasal, orolabial, and orbital zones. Results: The difference between the orbital, nasal, and orolabial zone parameters of healthy subjects and β-thalassemia major patients was found to be statistically significant (p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of head circumference in the cranial zone and total facial height in facial zone (n-gn) values (p˃0.05). In intragroup comparison between females and males with β-thalassemia, statistically significant differences were found in forehead width (ft-ft), forehead height (tr-gl), right eye width (R ex-ex), and upper lip height (sn-stm) (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Understanding the craniofacial profile changes in β-thalassemia major patients and increasing our knowledge about the relationship between the course and severity of disease and the level of these changes would contribute to the advancements in diagnoses to be made in facial and jaw zones of these patients and in the treatment plans. Clinical relevance: We believe that the analysis and results of the craniofacial anthropometric data obtained in the study will contribute to the diagnosis and treatment processes of patients with β-thalassemia major in areas of expertise such as craniofacial surgery, orthodontics, and hemato-oncology. Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyse changes in facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT) after corrective surgeries for dental malocclusion. The correlation between body mass index (BMI) and sex of patients and their FSTT before undergoing surgery was analysed. Materials and methods: Cone beam computed tomography of seventeen patients that underwent Le Fort I osteotomy in combination with bilateral sagittal split osteotomy were collected. Hard and soft tissue landmarks were selected basing on the interventions. FSTT were computed, and measurements from pre- to post-operative were compared. The relationship between FSTT, sex, and BMI was investigated. Results: Considering the comparison between pre- and post-operative measurements, any significant difference emerged (p >.05). The Pearson's correlation coefficient computed between BMI and the FSTT (pre-operative) showed a correlation in normal-weight patients; the region-specific analysis highlighted a stronger correlation for specific landmarks. Higher median values emerged for women than for men; the subset-based analysis showed that women presented higher values in the malar region, while men presented higher values in the nasal region. Conclusions: The considered surgeries did not affect the FSTT of the patients; differences related to BMI and sex were found. A collection of FSTT mean values was provided for twenty landmarks of pre- and post-operative of female and male subjects. Clinical relevance: This exploratory analysis gave insights on the behaviour of STT after maxillofacial surgeries that can be applied in the development of predictive methodologies for soft tissue displacements and to study modifications in the facial aspect of the patients. Age estimation is a perceptual task that people perform automatically and effortlessly on a daily basis. Colour has been identified as one of the facial cues that contributes to age perception. To investigate further the role of colour in age perception, we manipulated the chromatic content of facial images holistically. In Experiment 1, images were shown in colour or grey scale; in Experiment 2, images were shown with red–green contrast increased or decreased; in Experiment 3, images were shown with modified yellow–blue contrast. We examined whether the presence of chromatic information biases the perception of age and/or affects inter-observer variability in age judgements, and whether specific chromatic information affects the perception of age. We found that the same face tended to be judged as younger with increased red–green contrast compared to decreased red–green contrast, suggesting that red–green contrast directly affects age perception. Inter-observer variability in age ratings was significantly lower when participants were asked to rate colour compared with grey scale versions of images. Understanding hospital service use among children with a diagnosis of craniosynostosis (CS) is important to improve services and outcomes. This study aimed to describe population-level trends, patterns, and factors influencing hospitalizations for craniosynostosis in Western Australia. Data on live births (1990–2010; n = 554,624) including craniosynostosis, episodes of death, demographic, and perinatal factors were identified from the midwives, birth defects, hospitalizations, and death datasets. Information on craniosynostosis and non-craniosynostosis-related admissions, cumulative length of hospital stay (cLoS), intensive care unit, and emergency department–related admissions were extracted from the hospitalization dataset and linked to other data sources. These associations were examined using negative binomial regression presented as annual percent change and associations of hospitalizations by age groups, demographic, and perinatal factors were expressed as incidence rate ratio (IRR). We found an increasing trend in incident hospitalizations but a marginal decline in cLoS for craniosynostosis over the observed study period. Perinatal conditions, feeding difficulties, nervous system anomalies, respiratory, and other infections contributed to majority of infant non-CS-related admissions.Respiratory infections accounted for about twice the number of admissions for individuals with CS (IRRs 1.94–2.34) across all observed age groups. Higher incidence of non-CS hospitalizations was observed among females, with associated anomalies, to families with highest socioeconomic disadvantage and living in remote areas of the state. Conclusion: Marginal reduction in the cLoS for CS-related admissions observed over the 21-year period are potentially indicative of improved peri-operative care. Eyebrows are the most important facial feature in facial recognition with its shape rated to be more helpful than color or density for facial reconstruction or approximation. However, little extant research has estimated the position and morphological territory of the eyebrow from the orbit. Three-dimensional craniofacial models, produced from CT scans of 180 Koreans autopsied at the National Forensic Service Seoul Institute, were used to conduct metric analyses of subjects (125 males and 55 females) between 19 and 49 (mean 35.1) years. We employed 18 craniofacial landmarks to examine the morphometry of the eyebrow and orbit with 35 pairs of distances per subject measured between landmark and reference planes. Additionally, we used linear regression analyses to predict eyebrow shape from the orbit for every possible combination of variables. The morphology of the orbit has more influence on the position of the superior margin of the eyebrow. In addition, the middle part of the eyebrow was more predictable. The highest point of the eyebrow in female was located more medially than the male. Based on our findings, the equations for estimating the position of the eyebrow from the shape of the orbit is useful information for face reconstruction or approximation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Variables interacting to predict outcomes following spring-mediated cranioplasty (SMC) for non-syndromic craniosynostosis, including spring parameters and calvarial thickness, are poorly understood. This study assessed interactions between spring parameters and calvarial thickness to predict changes in cephalic index (CI) following SMC. Methods: Patients undergoing SMC for non-syndromic sagittal craniosynostosis at our institution between 2014 and 2021 were included. Calvarial thickness was determined from patient preoperative CTs using Materalise Mimics at 27 points in relation to the sagittal suture. Linear mixed effects models were used to determine interactions between anterior, middle, and posterior calvarial thickness with spring force and length. Results: Sixty-nine patients undergoing surgery at mean age 3.7 months were included in this study. Stronger posterior spring force interacted with thinner posterior calvarial thickness to predict greater changes in CI at 3 months postoperatively (p = 0.022). When evaluating spring force and calvarial thickness set distances from the sagittal suture, stronger posterior spring force interacted with thinner posterior calvarial thickness 5 mm (p = 0.043) and 10 mm (p = 0.036) from the sagittal suture to predict changes in CI. Interactions between spring parameters and calvarial thickness in the anterior and middle positions did not significantly predict changes in CI. Conclusions: Stronger posterior spring force interacted with thinner posterior calvaria to predict greater changes in CI 3 months following SMC for non-syndromic sagittal craniosynostosis. The human face is considered the prime entity in recognizing a person's identity in our society. Henceforth, the importance of face recognition systems is growing higher for many applications. Facial recognition systems are in huge demand, next to fingerprint-based systems. Face-biometric has a highly dominant role in various applications such as border surveillance, forensic investigations, crime detection, access management systems, information security, and many more. Facial recognition systems deliver highly meticulous results in every of these application domains. However, the face identity threats are evenly growing at the same rate and posing severe concerns on the use of face-biometrics. This paper significantly explores all types of face recognition techniques, their accountable challenges, and threats to face-biometric-based identity recognition. This survey paper proposes a novel taxonomy to represent potential face identity threats. These threats are described, considering their impact on the facial recognition system. State-of-the-art approaches available in the literature are discussed here to mitigate the impact of the identified threats. This paper provides a comparative analysis of countermeasure techniques focusing on their performance on different face datasets for each identified threat. This paper also highlights the characteristics of the benchmark face datasets representing unconstrained scenarios. A detailed understanding of craniofacial ontogenetic development is important in a variety of scientific disciplines dealing with facial reconstruction, forensic identification, ageing prediction, and monitoring of pathological growth, including the effect of therapy. The main goals of this study were (1) the construction of the facial aging model using local polynomial regression fitting separately for both sexes, (2) evaluation of the aging effect not only on facial form as a whole but also on dimensions important for clinical practice, and (3) monitoring of the development of shape facial sexual dimorphism. Our study was based on the form and shape analysis of three-dimensional facial surface models of 456 individuals aged 14–83 years. The facial models were obtained using a structured light-based optical scanner and divided (for some analyses) into four age categories (juveniles, young adults, middle adults, and elderly adults). The methodology was based on geometric and classic morphometrics including multivariate statistics. Aging in both sexes shared common traits such as more pronounced facial roundness reducing facial convexity, sagging soft tissue, smaller visible areas of the eyes, greater nose, and thinner lips. In contrast to female faces, male faces increase in size until almost 30 years of age. After the age of 70, male facial size not only stagnates, like in females, but actually decreases slightly. Purpose: To investigate oral and dental late effects in survivors of childhood brain tumors medulloblastoma (MB) and central nervous system supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor (CNS-PNET).Methods: This cross-sectional study assessed oral and dental late effects in MB/CNS-PNET survivors treated before 20 years of age, and with a minimum of 2 years since treatment. Participants went through an oral and radiographic examination. We assessed oral status using the decayed-missing-filled index (DMFT), oral dryness, maximum mouth opening (MMO), fungal infection, and registration of dental developmental disturbances (DDD) in the form of hypodontia, microdontia, and enamel hypoplasia.Results: The 46 participants' mean age at enrolment was 27 ± 12.8 years and at treatment 8.5 ± 5.2 years, and the mean time since treatment was 18.9 ± 12 years. Over a third (35%) of survivors had reduced mouth opening (mean 29.3 ± 5.6 mm (range 16-35)). A significantly lower MMO was found in individuals treated ≤ 5 years compared to survivors treated > 5 years (p = 0.021). One or more DDD were registered in 30.4% of the survivors, with a significantly higher prevalence in individuals treated ≤ 5 years (p < 0.001). Hypodontia was the most prevalent type of DDD. There was no difference in DMFT score in relation to age at treatment. Oral dryness was not frequently reported or observed in these survivors.Conclusion: Survivors of childhood MB/CNS-PNET are at risk of oral and dental late effects including reduced mouth opening and DDD. This meta-analysis aims to compare Apert syndrome (AS) patients with non-AS populations (not clinically or genetically diagnosed) on craniofacial cephalometric characteristics (CCC) to combine publicly available scientific information while also improving the validity of primary study findings. A comprehensive search was performed in the following databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Medline, and Web of Science, an article published between 1st January 2000 to October 17th, 2021. PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines were followed to carry out this systematic review. We used the PECO system to classify people with AS based on whether or not they had distinctive CCC compared to the non-AS population. Following are some examples of how PECO has been used: People with AS are labeled P; clinical or genetic diagnosis of AS is labeled E; individuals without AS are labeled C; CCC of AS are labeled O. Using the Newcastle–Ottawa Quality-Assessment-Scale, independent reviewers assessed the articles' methodological quality and extracted data. 13 studies were included in the systematic review. 8 out of 13 studies were score 7–8 in NOS scale, which indicated that most of the studies were medium to high qualities. Six case–control studies were analyzed for meta-analysis. Due to the wide range of variability in CCC, we were only able to include data from at least three previous studies. There was a statistically significant difference in N-S-PP (I2: 76.56%; P = 0.014; CI 1.27 to − 0.28) and Greater wing angle (I2: 79.07%; P = 0.008; CI 3.07–1.17) between AS and control subjects. Cleft palate, anterior open bite, crowding in the upper jaw, and hypodontia occurred more frequently among AS patients. Significant shortening of the mandibular width, height and length is the most reported feature in AS patients. CT scans can help patients with AS decide whether to pursue orthodontic treatment alone or to have their mouth surgically expanded. Background: Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures. The complexity of the nasal structure and the substantial aesthetic and functional impact of the operation make rhinoplasty very challenging. The past few years have witnessed an increasing implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) and simulation systems into plastic surgery practice. This review explores the potential uses of AI and simulation models in rhinoplasty. Methods: Five electronic databases were searched: PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science. We used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis as our basis of organization. Results: Several simulation models were described to predict the nasal shape that aesthetically matches the patient's face, indicate the implant size in augmentation rhinoplasty and construct three-dimensional (3D) facial images from two-dimensional images. Machine learning was used to learn surgeons' rhinoplasty styles and accurately simulate the outcomes. Deep learning was used to predict rhinoplasty status accurately and analyze the factors associated with increased facial attractiveness after rhinoplasty. Finally, a deep learning model was used to predict patients' age before and after rhinoplasty proving that the procedure made the patients look younger. Conclusion: 3D simulation models and AI models can revolutionalize the practice of functional and aesthetic rhinoplasty. Simulation systems can be beneficial in preoperative planning, intra-operative decision making, and postoperative evaluation. In addition, AI models can be trained to carry out tasks that are either challenging or time-consuming for surgeons. Purpose: To establish the content validity of LIMB-Q Kids, a new patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for children with lower limb deformities. This study focused on three key components of content validity, i.e., comprehension, comprehensiveness, and relevance. Methods: Cognitive debriefing interviews (CDIs) with children with lower limb deformities were performed, and expert input from parents and clinicians directly involved in the care of children with lower limb deformities was obtained. CDIs were conducted with children from sites in Australia, Canada, and the USA. All interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Analyses were conducted using the reparative approach, which involved close examination of the transcribed interviews and summarising edits after each interview. Results: Forty patients, experts, and parents reviewed LIMB-Q Kids and provided feedback. At the start, LIMB-Q Kids had 10 scales and 124 total items. Five rounds of input was obtained from children, parents, and experts. Overall, 37 new items were added. Thirty-three of the new items were included to measure symptoms experienced in different parts of the legs. Final version of LIMB-Q Kids had 11 scales and 159 items. Conclusion: This study established content validity of the LIMB-Q Kids, a new PROM for children with lower limb deformities. An international field-test study is underway. Translation and cultural adaptation are underway for sites where English is not the first language. Purpose: Saliva distribution over the palatal surface plays an important role in the perception of dry mouth. It is envisaged that non-invasive estimation of the palatal surface area by anthropometric measurements of the head and face can be useful in the assessment of oral dryness. For this purpose, the relationship between the palatal surface area and anthropometric measurements of the head and face was investigated. Methods: The palatal surface was measured in 51 healthy volunteers using an intra-oral scanner. The distances between anthropometric landmarks of the head and face were determined using an anatomical sliding caliper. Correlations between the palatal surface area and the anthropometric landmarks were investigated. Results: The median palatal surface area for the total study population was found to be 2120.6 mm2. Virtually, all anthropometric measurements showed significant differences between females and males. Various head and face measurements had a significant correlation with the palatal surface area. However, these correlations disappeared when the participants were stratified based on their sex, with the exception of mandibular length and palatal width in females. Conclusion: The surface area of the palate correlates with nearly all anthropometric measurements of the head and face included in this study. Objectives: The detrimental effect of tobacco smoking on periodontal health is well known, while the effect of electronic cigarette on periodontal parameters has been less investigated. The aim of the present systematic review was to compare periodontal indices in three categories of patients: traditional cigarette smokers (TS), e-cigarette smokers (ES), and non-smokers (NS). Materials and methods: An electronic search was conducted for studies published until December 2021 on MEDLINE (PubMed), ISI Web of Science, and Scopus. A hand search was additionally conducted. Clinical observational and cross-sectional trials investigating periodontal indices among tobacco smokers (TS), electronic cigarette smokers (ES) and non-smokers (NS) were included and selected by 2 independent reviewers. Data on probing depth (PD), plaque index (PI), and bleeding on probing (BOP) were collected. The risk of bias was evaluated according to the NIH quality assessment tool and a network meta-analysis (NMA) was undertaken. Results: Five relevant studies, from 707 identified, were included. Overall, 512 patients were included, of them 170 were NS, 176 were TS, and 166 were ES. A significant difference in the comparison among TS vs NS: effect size (ES) = 3.297 (95%CI: [2.142–4.454], p = 0.001) and TS and ES ES = 2.507 (95%CI: [1.351–3.663], p = 0.001) was identified for PD. A significant difference in the comparison among TS and NS, ES = 21.34 (95%CI: [13.41–29.27], p = 0.001) and between TS and ES ES = 15.67 (95%CI: [7.73–23.62], p = 0.001) was identified for PI. The analysis of BOP values shows a significant difference in the comparison among ES and NS: ES = − 16.22 (95%CI: [− 22.85 to − 9.59], p < 0.001) and between TS and NS: ES = − 14.47 (95%CI: [− 21.103 to − 7.848], p < 0.001). Based on the SUCRA ranking, NS showed the most favorable outcome for PD and PI, followed by ES. Tobacco smokers were clearly in the last position. Dealing with BoP ES showed the most favorable outcome, followed by TS. NS were in the last position. Conclusions: Periodontal parameters were similar among NS and ES, while TS presented the worst indices. BoP was reduced both in ES and in TS. Clinical relevance: Results of the present review suggest a reduced effect on periodontal tissue of e-cig smoking compared to traditional cigarettes, despite recent studies proved that e-cig smoking increases oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, change in pulmonary cellular behavior, and stimulates DNA injury. Objective: The present study aimed to determine the site and severity of maxillomandibular asymmetry before and after orthognathic surgery in asymmetric patients. Materials and methods: Presurgery and postsurgery cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data of 21 facial asymmetry patients (7 males and 14 females, mean age: 23.0 ± 3.36 years) with soft tissue chin deviation ≥ 3 mm who had undergone bimaxillary surgery were evaluated. Seven midline and twenty bilateral hard tissue landmarks were identified for the evaluation of facial asymmetry and outcomes were assessed against age- and gender-matched control subjects. Results: In the asymmetry group, bilateral landmarks exhibited significant deviation in the mandible and midface regions. Before surgery, asymmetry was more severe at the mandibular midline and sites close to it, in the asymmetry group. Bimaxillary surgery proved to be highly effective, with a significant correction of the menton to a clinically normal value (2.90 mm, p < 0.001). After surgery, significant residual asymmetry was observed at the mental foramen (p = 0.001) in the R-L direction. Moreover, significant asymmetry persisted at the sigmoid notch (p = 0.001) in the S-I direction. Conclusions: Mandibular midline landmarks and chin peripheral regions contribute significantly to overall facial asymmetry characteristics. Despite significant correction after bimaxillary surgery, asymmetry persisted at several sites, thereby requiring secondary correction. Comprehensive 3D presurgical planning is central for asymmetry correction in a single surgery. Objectives: To compare the characteristics of mandibular asymmetry in patients with unilateral craniofacial microsomia (CFM) and class II asymmetry. Materials and methods: Pretreatment cone-beam computed tomography of consecutive adults with Pruzansky-Kaban type I and IIA CFM (CFM group) was analyzed by 3D cephalometry. Fourteen mandibular landmarks and two dental landmarks were identified. The mandibular size and positional asymmetry were calculated by using landmark-based linear and volumetric measurements, in terms of asymmetry ratios (affected/non-affected side) and absolute differences (affected − non-affected side). Results were compared with non-syndromic class II with matched severity of chin deviation (Class II group). Statistical analyses included independent t test, paired t test, chi-square test, and ANOVA. Results: CFM group (n, 21; mean age, 20.4 ± 2.5 years) showed significantly larger size asymmetry in regions of mandibular body, ramus, and condyle compared to Class II group (n, 21; mean age, 27.8 ± 5.9 years) (p < 0.05). The curvature of mandibular body was asymmetric in CFM. Regarding the positional asymmetry of mandibular body, while a comparable transverse shift and a negligible yaw rotation were found among the two groups, the roll rotation in CFM was significantly greater as well as the occlusal (6.06° vs. 4.17°) and mandibular (7.84° vs. 2.80°) plane cants (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Mild CFM showed significantly more severe size asymmetry and roll rotation in mandible than non-CFM class II asymmetry. Clinical relevance: To improve the mandibular size and positional asymmetry in CFM, adjunct hard tissue augmentation or reduction in addition to OGS orthodontics with a meticulous roll and yaw planning is compulsory, which is expected to be distinct from treating non-CFM class II asymmetry. Objectives: Some adults with cleft lip and palate (CLP) require orthognathic surgery due to skeletal deformity. This prospective study aimed to (1) compare skeletal stability following bimaxillary surgery for correction of class III deformity between patients with unilateral CLP (UCLP) and bilateral CLP (BCLP), and (2) identify risk factors of stability. Materials and methods: Adults with CLP and skeletal class III deformities who underwent surgery-first bimaxillary surgery were divided into two groups according to cleft type: UCLP (n = 30) and BCLP (n = 30). Skeletal stability was assessed with measures from cone beam computed tomography images of the maxilla and mandible taken before treatment, 1-week and ≥ 1 year postsurgery for translation (left/right, posterior/anterior, superior/inferior) and rotation (yaw, roll, pitch); multiple regression analysis examined risk factors. Results: At follow-up, the maxilla moved upwards in both groups, and backwards in the UCLP group. The mandible moved forward and upward, shifted to the cleft (deviated) side, and rotated upward in both groups. The amount of surgical advancement was a risk factor for sagittal stability in the maxilla (ß = −0.14, p < 0.05). The mandible had three risk factors for sagittal stability: age (ß = −0.23, p < 0.05), surgical team (ß = −1.83, p < 0.05), and amount of surgical setback (ß = −0.32, p = 0.001). Conclusions: Two years after bimaxillary surgery, patients with UCLP had a higher sagittal relapse of the maxilla compared with patients with BCLP, which was due to a greater surgical advancement in the patients with UCLP. Clinical relevance: Surgery-first bimaxillary surgery results in favorable treatment outcomes for correction of cleft-related class III deformity. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the craniofacial and aesthetic characteristics of adult metopic and sagittal craniosynostosis patients operated on in early childhood compared to controls. The goal was to find objective measurements that would correlate with the patient's subjective self-evaluation of their own cosmetic appearance. Methods: The study population consisted of 49 patients from whom 41 had premature fusion of the sagittal and in 8 of metopic suture. There were 65 age and gender matching controls from The Finish National Register. The 3D photogrammetric models were created from all patients and controls. The images were analysed using Rapidform 2006. Facial landmarks were set by the standard Farkas points. Facial symmetry parameters were calculated by using the landmarks and the mirror shell of the face. Aesthetic evaluation was done from standard photographs using panels. Subjective satisfaction with one's own appearance was evaluated using questionnaires. Results: Patients had the greatest asymmetry in the forehead area when compared to controls (symmetry percentage 59% versus 66%, p = 0.013). In the control group, the gap between the eyes was smaller than in the case group, resulting in an absolute 2 mm difference (p = 0.003). The area of the chin and the landmarks were more located on the left side in the patient group, resulting in up to a 1.1 mm difference between the groups (p = 0.003). Only a weak association was found between craniofacial symmetry and appearance evaluations. Conclusion: Patients operated on because of sagittal and metopic synostoses were found to have facial asymmetry at long follow-up. However, the differences were < 3 mm and not clinically important. The long-term aesthetical outcome of the surgery performed because of sagittal or metopic craniosynostosis based on the 3D image evaluation was good. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high resiliency of bone, pneumatisation of sinuses and other factors lead to entrapment of muscle and/or soft tissue which undergoes ischaemic changes leading to residual diplopia. The timing of intervention in children ranges from 24 h to greater than 2 weeks. Early surgical intervention is particularly indicated in cases of Oculocardiac reflex. Methods: A Prisma guided systematic review of literature was conducted with no filters on language till September 2020. Studies on paediatric orbital fractures with data on timing of intervention and clinical outcomes were considered eligible for the review. The Oxford Level Of Evidence was used to assess the strength of individual studies. Results: A total of 19 studies (18 English, 1 French) were selected; except for one study all were retrospective series. The timing of intervention ranged from 24 h to more than 1 month. Most of the studies agreed that orbital fractures in children should receive early intervention preferably within 2 weeks. In case of white-eyed blowout fracture, oculocardiac reflex and trapdoor fractures with muscle entrapment surgical intervention should be carried out within 24–48 h. Discussion: Children presenting with facial injuries should be thoroughly examined for signs of muscle entrapment, diplopia, nausea, vomiting and bradycardia. If present these should receive early intervention. In cases with no signs of oculocardiac reflex and muscle entrapment a treatment within 2 weeks is recommended. If diplopia is mild or resolving with minimal hypoglobus and enophthalmos a wait and watch policy should be carried out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurate localization of eyes in low-resolution facial images is a challenging problem in computer vision community. The existing techniques provides inaccurate results for eye center localization in an uncontrolled environment, e.g. low resolution, low contrast, scale, pose and illumination variations etc. This study proposes a hybrid method for accurate eye center localization which shows robustness to above-mentioned problems. The proposed hybrid method is a two stage method. In the first stage, a new operator based on gradient and intensity information is proposed to extract the coarse eye candidates. The proposed operator uses the integral image and the dot product operations that make the system computationally efficient. The likelihood of eye centers are further verified in the second stage using a convolutional neural network architecture. In the verification stage, the normalized region of interest is adopted to solve the variations of different scales. The eye pair satisfying the predefined constraints is selected as the true eye pair. The proposed method is extensively tested on various databases to check its accuracy to the uncontrolled environment. The experimental analysis suggests that the proposed hybrid method can localize the eye center more precisely and eventually shows superior performance over some of the competitive state-of-the-art methods. Introduction: Hydrocephalus is variously associated to syndromic craniosynostosis (CS), while it is randomly encountered in monosutural CS. Pathogenesis is still debated and reliable criteria for the diagnosis of overt hydrocephalus are lacking. Additionally, optimal treatment is controversial since it should balance the need to relieve intracranial hypertension and the risk of recurrence favored by lowering intracranial pressure. Methods: A thorough review of the literature has been performed. Accordingly, pathogenic theories, diagnostic issues, and treatment options on hydrocephalus presenting in the context of CS are discussed. Results: The association of hydrocephalus to simple CS is considered a fortuitous event. Its treatment is usually driven by the etiology and clinical relevance of hydrocephalus, favoring treatment before surgical correction to reduce CSF-related complications. On the other side, pathogenesis of hydrocephalus in the context of syndromic CS has been mainly related to factors that are secondary to the synostostic process, such as craniocerebral disproportion and venous hypertension. Hydrocephalus complicates 12–15% of syndromic CS, though its incidence is more relevant in FGFR2-related CS and raises up to 88% in Pfeiffer syndrome. Overt hydrocephalus should be properly differentiated by non-tense ventriculomegaly that is more frequent in Apert syndrome. Since intracranial hypertension is constant in syndromic CS even in the absence of active hydrocephalus, radiological monitoring of ventricular size along with intracranial pressure monitoring is essential. Active hydrocephalus occurs more frequently in infants, though stable ventriculomegaly may evolve into overt hydrocephalus after cranial expansion. If hydrocephalus is not clinically prominent, cranial expansion should be favored as first surgical step. Although posterior cranial expansion may address posterior cranial fossa constriction and stabilize ventricular dilation, effectiveness in long-term control of hydrocephalus is not clear. ETV is an effective treatment option, though success rate is affected by the presence of brain malformations and patient age. Extrathecal CSF shunting should be used as last resource due to the increased risk of complications in this context. Conclusions: The pathogenesis of hydrocephalus complicating syndromic CS should be further investigated. Concomitantly, the definition of reliable diagnostic criteria is advocated in order to promptly and properly identify active hydrocephalus. Finally, treatment algorithm should refine the best timing and treatment options aiming to relieve intracranial hypertension on one side and reduce the risk of restenosis on the other side. Introduction: Brachycephaly and anterior and posterior plagiocephaly appear as an isolated entity or manifest in syndromic conditions. In severe cases, possible treatment options currently comprise either cranioplasty or osteogenetic distraction. The aim of this paper is to retrospectively review the perioperative course of a series of children treated by posterior meander expansion technique at our institution with focus on the course of postoperative intracranial volume and eventual tonsillar descent evolution. Methods: Forty-two children received a posterior cranial vault remodeling by means of a posterior meander technique during a 7-year period. Hospital records were reviewed, and pre- and postoperative MRIs were analyzed for intracranial volume, cephalic and asymmetry index, and tonsillar position over time. Results: Median age at surgery was 11.5 months (range 17 days–10 years). Nineteen children had a symmetrical cranial deformity, twenty-three an asymmetrical synostosis. Half of the cohort showed a syndromic condition. Transfusions were administered in the majority (92.2%) of the cases. A significant postoperative increase of intracranial volume was present from 1188.9 ± 370.4 cm3 to 1324.8 ± 352.9 cm3 (p < 0.001). The asymmetry index showed a significant improvement postoperatively: 0.86 ± 0.06 versus 0.91 ± 0.05 (p < 0.001), while the cephalic index showed a non-statistical change (0.91 ± 0.11 versus 0.88 ± 0.08). Tonsillar herniation, bilateral or homolateral, showed no significant changes at early control, while a nonsignificant amelioration of tonsillar descent was seen among children older than 12 months at late imaging follow-up. Conclusion: Among the osteoplastic techniques, the posterior meander technique offers several advantages, such as early mobilization of the child, less bony defects, absence of implants, and a small complication rate. Background: Different techniques to reshape the posterior skull vault have been developed in the last decades, all sharing the same goals of increasing the skull volume, decreasing the intracranial pressure (ICP), correcting the cranial dysmorphy, and contributing to a better growth of the skull. Though over the last years most refinements in these techniques have focused on the use of hardware as distractors or springs, the fixed posterior vault expansion remains a valuable procedure for cranial remodeling. Methods: We describe in details the technique used for fixed posterior vault expansion in children that is applied at the French Referral center for Craniosynostosis of Lyon, France. Discussion: The fixed posterior vault expansion increases the risk of perioperative complications due to the elevation of the posterior bone flap from the dura but allows an immediate decompression and correction of the shape, simplifying the postoperative course. Posterior cranial vault distraction is an effective technique when a significant increase in the intracranial volume is required in patients with craniosynostoses. This technique has been proven to be safe and time saving and usually is associated with low perioperative morbidity as well as low intraoperative bleeding. Herein a technique is presented starting from the preoperative planning, describing the surgical steps of the operation and the postoperative distraction protocol used by the authors. Purpose: In the current study, the authors attempt to thoroughly investigate the concept of beauty from different perspectives in different historical periods and offer their personal thoughts about it. Methods: The authors performed a comprehensive and across-the-board literature review about 'beauty', including beauty from a philosophical perspective, beauty perception by human mind, beauty from a biopsychological perspective, beauty of the face, body and breast, models of beauty and beauty in cosmetic surgery. Results: From Plato to modern neuro-psychological studies, the concept of beauty has always been a theme for adamant debates and passionate thoughts. Different aspects of beauty, from intellectual to pure physical, have received a tremendous amount of attention. The true definition of the concept of beauty is still ambiguous, and there is not a unanimous explanation for it. It seems that the definition of beauty differs in every individual's mind and over the history of humankind. Conclusion: Although beauty is a very important concept and the seek for achieving it is a very natural behavior, one must remember that the importance of beauty should not overshadow the fact that every human being is made up of similar internal organs. Background: Accurate placement of TMJ implant components may be facilitated by virtual surgical planning (VSP) technologies. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of a typical VSP protocol and describe the pattern of surgical error associated with total alloplastic TMJ replacement. Methods: A retrospective analysis was undertaken on 40 adult patients who were implanted with a fully customised, 3D printed TMJ prosthesis due to end-stage TMJ disease. Planned TMJ implant position based on preoperative CBCT images was compared with final position on postoperative OPGs using a previously validated linear rescaling method. Translational discrepancy was described in the anterior-posterior direction and superior-inferior direction. Rotational discrepancy was described as anterior or posterior. Results: Lin's concordance between preoperative and postoperative position was 0.97, with no significant differences (p > 0.05). The Bland-Altman analysis showed a 95% limit of agreement between planned and final position of − 5.9 to 5.4 mm. Overall, final implant position was more anterior (0.4 mm), superior (0.4 mm) and posteriorly rotated (2.4°) compared with planned position. Conclusion: The use of VSP in TMJ replacement surgery results in accurate implant placement with good agreement between planned and final implant position. Discrepancies in planned and final implant position tended to result in the mandibular component of the implant being translated anterior superiorly and rotated posteriorly, with potential implications for the biomechanical performance of the implant and overall device longevity. These results should be used to assist TMJ surgeons pre- and intraoperatively to facilitating accurate implant positioning and optimal surgical rehabilitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
