Cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) have grown rapidly in recent years and are a major part of foreign direct investment (FDI). However, M&A distribution is highly skewed, with most of the activity concentrated in certain countries and even in certain cities. The fact that only a handful of cities account for most M&As raises a research question as to what city attributes attract foreign investment. Unlike many previous studies that have relied on a gravity model approach using the bilateral volume of FDI, this study examines the determinants of cross-border M&As by applying an FDI gravity model to inter-city investment flows. The results based on panel data of M&A flow across 44 major cities in the world from 2010 to 2017, reveal that the gravity model fits well for even the inter-city data, and show that besides the basic attributes used in conventional gravity models, such as market size and distance between origin city and destination city, and urban-specific attributes such as the agglomeration of the world's top-ranked firms and international accessibility are positively associated with cross-border inward M&As. This paper focuses on creative industries and the role played by the existing spatial distribution and agglomeration economies of these activities in relation to their entry decisions. We rely on employment and firm-level data in the creative industries (provided by INSEE) and compare the location of new establishments in the creative and non-creative industries between 2009 and 2013 in French departments (NUTS 3 regions). We use count data models and spatial econometrics to show that location determinants are rather similar in creative and non-creative industries and that specialisation in creative industries positively influences the entry of all other industries. The role of urban forests in carbon capture and sequestration has been reviewed in a global context. An interpretive analysis was carried out using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and allometric relationships in 5 cities of India, viz. Navi Mumbai, Nagpur, Bengaluru, Leh and Delhi, to evaluate the economic importance of urban green spaces in sequestrating carbon emissions and mitigating severe climatic impacts. NDVI maps were prepared using data from Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 satellite sensors. Bengaluru showed highest carbon sequestration (141.83 MT), and carbon sequestration in the city of Leh was comparatively very low (1.51 MT) as it is a cold desert with a very low urban forest cover. The valuation of urban green spaces in the selected cities was done by using market price method (MPM), value transfer method (VTM), and social cost of carbon method (SCC). The carbon sequestration valuation ranged from 55 to 5164 million$ for estimation using MPM and from 69.69 to 6537.15 million $ for SCC, whereas for VTM it ranged from 1575.06 to 147,736.94 million INR. The SCC approach used for valuation showed the highest cost of CO2 sequestered, while the MPM provided with the lowest value for all the five cities. Highest carbon sequestration and valuation values were observed in Bengaluru followed by Delhi. This study also points to the need of developing region-specific allometric relationships for better accuracy in quantifying carbon sequestration potential and associated economic value of urban forests. The sharing economy is established as a new economy in the digital era. Many reviews on the sharing economy avail, but none, to date, has shed enough light to illuminate understanding pertaining to the similar and dissimilar characteristics of consumers and producers in the sharing economy. To address this gap, this paper aims to provide a one-stop, state-of-the-art overview of existing research on the sharing economy through the lens of consumers and producers. To do so, this paper conducts a systematic review of 148 articles on the sharing economy identified through the snowballing technique and organized using the antecedents, decisions, and outcomes (ADO) and theories, contexts, and methods (TCM) frameworks. In doing so, this paper unpacks the trust, personal, economic, social, entrepreneurial, environmental, legal, and technological factors that impact on behavioural performance, loyalty, and impact factors among consumers and producers in the sharing economy. Finally, this paper also reveals the theories, contexts, and methods that avail for sharing economy research, as well as the potentially fruitful directions for future research. This paper employs a two-factor jump-diffusion model to investigate the optimal investment timing and capacity choice of the duopoly firms in the presence of uncertain and asymmetric time-to-build. By assuming that both the market demand and investment cost follow the jump-diffusion process, we show that the impacts of uncertainty of time-to-build on duopoly firms' the optimal investment decisions depend on the directions of jumps in demand and investment cost. Moreover, the asymmetry of time-to-build makes it possible for the dominated firm to preempt the market successfully and becomes the leader. The leader's capacity level increases with the dominated firm's time-to-build and the follower's decreases, even if the dominated firm is the leader. Capital misallocation is a serious threat to economic growth, and digital economy may have the potential to help curb capital misallocation. Based on the provincial panel data from 2006 to 2019, this study calculates digital economy and capital misallocation in 30 provinces of China. The classical econometric model and the spatial panel model are used to test the impact of digital economy on capital misallocation. The moderating effect model is constructed to analyze the moderating effect of innovation environment (financial development and talent agglomeration). The results show that digital economy significantly inhibits capital misallocation, this conclusion still holds after a series of robustness tests. In addition, there is a spatial spillover effect of digital economy on capital misallocation. Digital economy can inhibit not only local capital misallocation, but also neighboring capital misallocation. Financial development and talent agglomeration have a moderating effect in the relationship between digital economy and capital misallocation. China's economy has developed rapidly since the implementation of its reform and opening-up policy. However, the long-term extensive development has also brought serious ecological problems to China. Ecological crises, such as air pollution, water pollution and land desertification occur frequently. Green finance has become a path to promote China's sustainable economic development as an economic activity to deal with climate change, improve the ecological environment and make rational use of resources. This paper will construct a spatial econometric model and coupling coordination degree model to carry out empirical research. Based on the data from 1999 to 2020, this paper constructs an evaluation index system of green finance and an economic ecology system. First, the spatial autocorrelation model is used to analyze the spatial relationship. Second, the coupling coordination degree model is used to measure the evolution of the coupling coordination relationship between green finance and economic ecology. The results show that green finance has a strong spatial agglomeration. Economic and ecological development has maintained a stable spatial positive correlation. The spatial difference of economic ecological development is more obvious than the development of green finance. The development of green finance has a significant positive role in promoting the economic and ecological development of its province. The degree of coupling and coordination of green finance and economic ecology shows an increasing trend, changing from transition type to coupling and coordination type. It shows that China's green finance can effectively promote the overall optimal development of economic ecology to a certain extent. However, no high-quality coordination was observed in the result of coupling coordination, and thus, there is still some room for progress in the development of the two. The primary problem in achieving carbon emission reduction and carbon peak is to identify the key driving factors and emission reduction potential of the industrial sector, especially in resource-cursed regions like Xinjiang. This study aimed to explore the key driving factors and abatement potential of carbon emissions based on the "energy-environment-economy" hybrid input–output model of Xinjiang during 1997–2017. The result showed that: (1) Industrial carbon emissions have experienced three stages: slow growth-rapid growth-stable growth. (2) Demand change effect and energy intensity effect were the determinants of Xinjiang industrial carbon emission change; Capital formation and domestic trade were the biggest drivers of carbon emissions growth; Especially after entering the "new normal",the driving force of imports in Xinjiang's international trade increased gradually over time. (3) The coal-based energy structure was both the biggest obstacle and the best entry point in carbon emission reduction. (4) Of the 28 key industry sectors, heavy industry including the production and supply of electricity and heat (S22), petroleum processing, coking and nuclear fuel processing (S11), chemical industry (S12), metal smelting and rolling (S14), and energy industries had the greatest potential for carbon reduction. The research findings provide scientific decision-making reference for Xinjiang to accurately grasp the carbon emission reduction potential of the industry and formulate a targeted carbon peak action plan. Provinces (cities and districts) with identifiable boundaries are under intense pressure to reduce emissions as a fundamental unit and research object of carbon peaking and carbon-neutrality goals. Due to the significant variability of regional development, achieving equilibrium between carbon emissions and carbon absorption is challenging, contributing to the difficulty of developing carbon emission reduction and relevant green strategic initiatives in China. Therefore, this paper explored the spatial effect of carbon balance with carbon pressure as the starting point. First, this paper defined the "carbon pressure index" (CPI) of 30 provinces (cities and districts) in China from 2000 to 2019. Second, this paper validated the CPI agglomeration evolutionary characteristics in global and local aspects based on the Moran's index. Third, this paper identified and decomposed the spatial heterogeneity of CPI using the kernel density estimation method and the Theil index, then extracted typical cities to analyze the specific causes. Finally, this paper classified the seven regions in China into four types according to a comprehensive analysis of CPI. The results indicated that China's ecological carbon cycle system was in a serious "carbon overload" state. Thirty provinces (cities and districts) showed significant spatial agglomeration characteristics. The spatial gap of CPI was gradually decreasing nationwide, and the intra-regional differences were the leading cause of CPI levels in China. The population distribution in Canada across subnational jurisdictions exhibits significant inequality. Precipitous growth within concentrated urban agglomerations, culminating in severe rural depopulation, has perpetuated existing subnational population growth disparities. More densely populated metropolitan areas are experiencing an increasing proportion of the aggregate population, while ruralized jurisdictions succumb to a dramatic population exodus. Accordingly, the geographic dispersion of the Canadian population has become increasingly skewed, and thus a substantial proportion of the national populace is concentrated within a handful of metropolitan jurisdictions. The localization of growth within urbanized zones renders the geography of the population distribution increasingly volatile, thereby carving a fault line into the landscape of the national economy. Using census data from 1991 to the most recent (2021), this study formulates a novel quantification of the unequal distribution of population in Canada over time, utilizing an adaptation of the Lorenz curve and the Gini coefficient. The findings exhibit significant and growing inequality in the population distribution with a substantial proportion of the national populace concentrated within a few metropolitan areas. During a time of rapid urban growth and development, it is becoming ever more important to monitor the carbon fluxes of our cities. Unlike Canada's commercially managed forests that have a long history of inventory and modelling tools, there is both a lack of coordinated data and considerable uncertainty on assessment procedures for urban forest carbon. Nonetheless, independent studies have been carried out across Canada. To improve upon Canada's federal government reporting on carbon storage and sequestration by urban forests, this study builds on existing data to develop an updated assessment of carbon storage and sequestration for Canada's urban forests. Using canopy cover estimates derived from ortho-imagery and satellite imagery ranging from 2008 to 2012 and field-based urban forest inventory and assessment data from 16 Canadian cities and one US city, this study found that Canadian urban forests store approximately 27,297.8 kt C (− 37%, + 45%) in above and belowground biomass and sequester approximately 1497.7 kt C year−1 (− 26%, + 28%). In comparison with the previous national assessment of urban forest carbon, this study suggested that in urban areas carbon storage has been overestimated and carbon sequestration has been underestimated. Maximizing urban forest carbon sinks will contribute to Canada's mitigation efforts and, while being a smaller carbon sink compared to commercial forests, will also provide important ecosystem services and co-benefits to approximately 83% of Canadian people. This paper analyzes the emerging performance and early development of new establishments considering the role of agglomerations. It creates distinctions between the most commonly observed types of new businesses, namely startups, spinoffs, and new establishments that result from a change in proprietorship. The empirical analysis reveals that new establishments with higher productivity emerge in regions with higher population density, regardless of the foundation type. While at the end of the time period analyzed, new establishments in more densely populated regions still show higher productivity levels than those in less densely populated regions, an agglomeration's role depends on the foundation type. Indeed, while spinoffs in more densely populated regions tend to reflect the higher productivity levels shown in the first time period, the productivity premium of startups in agglomerations diminishes over time. This analysis emphasizes the relevance of location for the setup and early development of new ventures and, more importantly, the varying role of agglomerations conditioned by the characteristics of new businesses. The environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance is a vital pursuit of firms' strategy and has caused substantial influences on firms' behavior and outcomes. Therefore, exploring how to facilitate the firms' ESG performance is necessary. This paper examines the role of CEOs' hometown identity in facilitating firm's ESG performance. Based on a sample of Chinese listed firms during 2010–2018, we compare the ESG performance of firms with hometown CEO with that of firms without hometown CEO and find that CEOs' hometown identity is associated with significantly higher ESG performance. The benchmark results still hold after instrumental variable regression, placebo test, propensity score matching, lagging, and altering the measurement of CEOs' hometown identity. Additional analysis shows that CEOs' hometown identity exerts a more prominent positive effect on ESG performance among firms with higher financing constraints and SOEs. Our findings reveal a bright side of CEOs' hometown identity: it facilitates ESG performance. Therefore, this paper's conclusion sheds new light on the bright side of CEOs' hometown identity from the perspective of firms' ESG performance and provides insights into how to improve ESG performance. The carbon emission rights trading pilot (CERTP) policy is an important measure to promote low-carbon economic development. This pilot policy also affects the entry and survival of enterprises and is thus related to local government fiscal pressure. The objective of this paper is to examine whether the CERTP policy increases local government fiscal pressure. Based on the quasi-natural experiment of China's CERTP policy, using a dataset from 314 prefecture-level cities in China over the period 2005 to 2019, this paper applies the staggered difference-in-differences (DID) model to examine the impact of the CERTP policy on local government fiscal pressure, and further tests the spatial spillover effects and potential mediation mechanisms of this pilot policy. The results indicate that the implementation of the CERTP policy significantly increases local government fiscal pressure, especially in the eastern regions and regions with low economic development levels, which provides further evidence of a causal relationship between the CERTP policy and fiscal pressure. The results of the spatial spillover effects confirm that the implementation of the CERTP policy in neighboring prefecture-level cities would increase local government fiscal pressure in the local region. The results of the mediation mechanism effect reveal that the CERTP policy aggravates local government fiscal pressure by inhibiting the progress of green technology by enterprises, hindering the emergence of new enterprises, and increasing the number of closures of high-carbon emissions enterprises. This paper recommends that when implementing the CERTP policy, it is necessary to weigh the overall impact of the policy, not just its effect on carbon emissions reduction. Business groups are sets of firms tied together by a centralized control mechanism, and they represent the most common form of business organization worldwide. Business groups have internal labor and capital markets that help them overcome institutional voids. Despite the abundant literature on the location of business groups across countries, little is known about the factors that explain the choice of a location of firms affiliated with (or controlled by) business groups within a country. Building on business group literature and agglomeration economics, we propose in this study that more firms are affiliated with business groups in regions with limited access to strategic resources, finance, and labor. Empirical results based on a large sample of privately held French firms support the idea that business group affiliation is more common in regions with limited access to the workforce. However, we could not find any evidence in support of the argument that the degree of regional financial development influences the likelihood of a business group affiliation. Overall, the study provides evidence that the way businesses are organized, for instance, as business groups, depends on the degree of resource scarcity of the locations in which firms are created. We present a household and enterprise energy survey dataset collected within the framework of the PeopleSuN project in Nigeria in 2021. Across three Nigerian geopolitical zones, a total of 3,599 households and 1,122 small and medium-sized enterprises were surveyed. The sample is designed to be representative of rural and peri-urban grid-electrified regions of each zone. Our surveys collect data on demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, energy access and supply quality, electrical appliance ownership and usage time, cooking solutions, energy related capabilities, and supply preferences. We encourage academic use of the data presented and suggest three avenues of further research: (1) modelling appliance ownership likelihoods, electricity consumption levels and energy service needs in un-electrified regions; (2) identifying supply-side and demand-side solutions to address high usage of diesel generators; (3) exploring broader issues of multi-dimensional energy access, access to decent living standards and climate vulnerability. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle industry is of great significance for China to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 and enhance the international competitiveness in the new energy vehicle industry. We propose a framework to evaluate the leading position in the innovation network of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and analyze the influential factors of the leading position. First, we construct China's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle innovation network and its two sub-networks through 3528 patents registered in China and applied by 254 Chinese and foreign innovators. Second, the positions of Chinese and foreign innovators in the network are evaluated. Last, the influential factors of the leading position are tested through regression analysis. The main results show that (1) China has formed a hub-and-spoke mode of innovation cluster in hydrogen fuel cell vehicle innovation network, but the inter-provincial innovation cooperation has not been formed in the industrial chain. (2) Universities and research institutes are important innovators in China's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle innovation network. Firms obtain knowledge through collaboration with them, which form an industry-university-research cooperation mode. (3) The number of Chinese leaders in hydrogen fuel cell vehicle network is increasing. Foreign innovators occupy the leading position in fuel cell sub-network, while Chinese innovators are the leaders in hydrogen infrastructure sub-network. (4) The leading position of Chinese innovators in hydrogen infrastructure sub-network is promoted by the patent applications of the universities, the development of equipment manufacturing, the government subsidies, and the competition of electric vehicles, while they are hindered by the scale of traditional automobile industry. Although equity is an important aspect of sustainable development, equity research has mainly focused on income and economics while paying insufficient attention to ecological equity. Therefore, aiming to improve our understanding of equity and promote environmental protection, this study introduced natural capital to measure regional ecological equity and analyze its driving factors. Based on ecological footprint (EF) and ecosystem service value (ESV), we constructed evaluation indexes and drew an "ecological Lorentz curve bundle" to analyze ecological equity in the Jing–Jin–Ji urban agglomeration (JUA) from 2009 to 2020. The results showed that economic development in JUA resulted in the severe depletion of natural capital, especially biological and energy resources, and the supply and demand of natural capital was in a low-level equilibrium state. Based on JUA's population base, natural capital utilization in the region had exceeded ecological equity, and the Gini coefficient of EF based on population was close to the international warning value of 0.4. Although economic development in JUA has promoted economic equity, it has also led to environmental inequity. Large cities such as Beijing and Tianjin, as well as industrial cities such as Tangshan and Handan, have had the greatest effects on ecological equity. The aggregation kinetics of settling particles is studied theoretically and numerically using the advection–diffusion equation. Agglomeration caused by these mechanisms (diffusion and advection) is important for both small particles (e.g., primary ash or soot particles in the atmosphere) and large particles of identical or close size, where the spatial inhomogeneity is less pronounced. Analytical results can be obtained for small and large Péclet numbers, which determine the relative importance of diffusion and advection. For small numbers (spatial inhomogeneity is mainly due to diffusion), an expression for the aggregation rate is obtained using an expansion in terms of Péclet numbers. For large Péclet numbers, when advection is the main source of spatial inhomogeneity, the aggregation rate is derived from ballistic coefficients. Combining these results yields a rational approximation for the whole range of Péclet numbers. The aggregation rates are also estimated by numerically solving the advection–diffusion equation. In this study, we use the spatial econometric model with panel data to investigate the mechanism and effect of economic growth on public health in Western China. The research results show that the spatial agglomeration effects are significant on the public health performance in Western China. Economic growth significantly promotes local public health status during the range of our sample data, leading to reduced human mortality. Environmental pollution significantly increases human mortality not only in local province but also in neighboring provinces. As GRP per capita of a province continues to increase, the impact of environmental pollution on increasing human mortality has diminished gradually. Moreover, improving the level of technological progress and healthcare services significantly improve public health. Interestingly, as GRP per capita of a province continues to increase, the impact of technological progress and healthcare services on decreasing human mortality has gradually weakened. Green growth refers to the economic growth strategy, which is less detrimental to natural assets, predominantly the environment. Therefore, the main motive of investment and innovation activities should be to attain economic growth while sustainably utilizing natural assets. In this regard, we aim to explore whether ICT diffusion and financial development matter for attaining green economic growth in BRICS economies. The long-run autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) results show that internet development exerts a positive influence on green growth in four BRICS economies excluding India. However, the long-run estimates of mobile cellular subscriptions are positive only in Russia and China. On the other side, the increase in bank credit and insurance premium also contributes to the long-run green economic growth in almost all BRICS economies. Policymakers should focus on the increased use of ICT in the economy that would replace the physical resources in the economy with information resources. Using fixed, mediating, and moderating effect models, we explored the impact of the digital economy on carbon emission intensity and its mechanisms based on panel data of 100 cities in 6 Chinese urban agglomerations from 2011 to 2019. The results show that (1) the digital economy development in the urban agglomerations can significantly reduce carbon emission intensity. (2) The digital economy in the urban agglomerations can indirectly reduce carbon emission intensity through the channels of green technology innovation and the information communications technology (ICT) industry. Furthermore, a higher degree of marketization in the urban agglomerations leads to a more pronounced effect of the digital economy on reducing carbon emission intensity. (3) The impact of the digital economy on the carbon emission intensity in the urban agglomerations is regionally heterogeneous. When the carbon emission intensity is at different quantiles, the effects of the digital economy on reducing carbon emission intensity are different. (4) The digital economy development has different impacts on carbon emission intensity when different urban agglomerations are approved. The digital economy development in the urban agglomerations can better reduce carbon emission intensity than that in other cities. Currently, China is in a significant period of rapid digital economy development and energy conservation and emission reduction. We revealed some new features of the digital economy and carbon emission intensity in urban agglomerations, providing a reference for promoting the construction of urban agglomerations, developing the digital economy, and reducing carbon emission intensity. This paper considers agglomeration economies. A new firm is planning to open a plant in a country divided into several regions. Each firm receives a positive externality if the new plant is located in its region. In a decentralized mechanism, the plant would be opened in the region where the new firm maximizes its individual benefit. Due to the externalities, it could be the case that the aggregate utility of all firms is maximized in a different region. Thus, the firms in the optimal region could transfer something to the new firm in order to incentivize it to open the plant in that region. We propose two rules that provide two different schemes for transfers between firms already located in the country and the newcomer. The first is based on cooperative game theory. This rule coincides with the τ -value, the nucleolus, and the per capita nucleolus of the associated cooperative game. The second is defined directly. We provide axiomatic characterizations for both rules. We characterize the core of the cooperative game. We prove that both rules belong to the core. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both academics and policymakers regard publicly planned logistics nodes (PPLN) as a potential measure to promote logistics agglomeration and mitigate environmental damage caused by logistics activities. However, such measure may lead to non-linear carbon emission effect from the perspective of agglomeration economy, and empirical evidences are yet to be found to verify this inference. This paper uses DID method and mediating effect models to explore the effects and mechanisms of PPLN on CO2 emissions with panel data from 2000 to 2017 in Chengdu, China. Our findings show that PPLN promotes the agglomeration of both small and large-scale logistics enterprises and increases carbon emissions. In addition, the agglomeration of large-scale logistics enterprises can reduce carbon emissions; the opposite is true for smaller ones. Despite the continuous diminishing of the carbon emission increase, the emission-reduction effect has not been achieved through PPLN operations. Based on the results, the study recommends that the government should appropriately determine the location and scale of PPLN, advocate green construction and industrial upgrading, and adopt differentiated regulatory and incentive measures for enterprises. It is widely known that both geography and institutions determine the location of an investment. However, little is known about the impact of these factors on entrepreneurs' future business plans. Using a questionnaire survey, this paper examines whether the 'first-' and 'second-nature' geography and institutions affect the plans of entrepreneurs to expand or sell their businesses in Greece. The analysis shows that entrepreneurs intend to expand their businesses when the importance of the country's relative geographical location to the international market increases, but that of localisation economies decreases. With the rapid development of urban agglomerations in northwest arid and semiarid regions of China, the scope of the urban heat island (UHI) effect has gradually expanded and gradually connected, and has formed a regional heat island (RHI) with a larger range of impact to the regional environment. However, there are few studies on the heat island effect of urban agglomerations in arid and semiarid regions, so this paper selects the urban agglomeration of Hohhot, Baotou and Ordos (HBO) of Inner Mongolia, China as the study area. Based on the 8-day composite Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) surface temperature data (156 scenes in all) and land use maps for 2005, 2010, and 2015, we analyze the spatiotemporal distributions of regional heat (cool) islands (RH(C)I) and the responses of surface temperatures to land-use changes in the diurnal and interannual surface cities. The results showed that: 1) from 2005 to 2015, urban areas showed the cold island effect during the day, with the area of the cold island showing a shrinking feature; at night, they showed the heat island effect, with the area of the heat island showing a first decrease and then an increase. 2) From 2005 to 2015, the land development (unutilized land to building land) brings the greatest temperature increase (ΔT = 1.36°C) during the day, while the greatest temperature change at night corresponds to the conversion of cultivated land to building land (ΔT = 0.78°C) exhibited the largest changes at night. From 2010 to 2015, the land development (grassland to building land) bring the greatest temperature increase (ΔT = 0.85°C) during the day, while the great temperature change at night corresponds to the conversion of water areas to building land (ΔT = 1.38°C) exhibited the largest changes at night. Exploring the spatial and temporal evolution of surface urban heat (cool) islands in urban agglomerations in arid and semiarid regions will help to understand the urbanization characteristics of urban agglomerations and provide a reference for the formulation of policies for the coordinated and healthy development of the region and co-governance of regional environmental problems. This study applied a threshold panel data model to test the nonlinear impacts of tourism development and the potential moderating effect of tourism density on urban livability, using observations of 35 large and medium-size cities in China from 2002 to 2016. Findings revealed that the total effect of tourism development on urban livability first increased and then decreased with the growth of tourism density. Thus, tourism development was found to have a critical impact on urban livability, both positively and negatively, with a non-monotonic moderating effect of tourism density. We empirically examine the effects of overseas aggregate aid and energy aid inflows on renewable and non-renewable electricity production in selected BRICS countries (i.e., Brazil, India, China, and South Africa) from 1995 to 2015. Economic growth, foreign direct investment inflows, and trade openness are control variables in electricity production functions. The results from employing fully modified ordinary least square and dynamic OLS techniques indicate that economic growth, inflows of aggregate aid, energy aid, and foreign direct investment promote renewable electricity production, while trade openness reduces it. We also find that aggregate aid and energy aid inflows reduce the non-renewable electricity production, while economic growth, foreign direct investment inflows, and trade openness promote it. Moreover, our study is unique and adopts different panel estimators, ensuring the robustness of the research findings. Our findings suggest that the BRICS economies' march towards a sustainable environment becomes possible if policymakers, in their climate mitigation policy, encourage greater investments of overseas aggregate aid and energy aid inflows toward renewable electricity production. Due to the unique physical properties, graphene and its derivatives are often used as the reinforcements to improve and modulate mechanical performances and dynamic behaviors of composite materials. In this paper, a semi-analytical finite element method is utilized to analyze the wave properties of functionally graded graphene-reinforced piezoelectric nanocomposite cylindrical shells with graphene agglomeration effects. The effective micromechanics model, the first-order shear deformation shell theory, and the Hamiltonian principle are organically intergrated to derive the wave equation to analyze the modulation of wave propagation of functionally graded graphene-reinforced piezoelectric nanocomposite cylindrical shells by regulating agglomeration effects. The results indicate that the decrease in volume fraction of agglomeration phase and the raising of the amount of graphene sheets in agglomeration phase lead to the reduction of phase and group velocities and hinder the transmission of waves and wave energy. The higher the graphene total volume fraction, the more obvious the influence of the agglomeration effects on the structural wave properties. Meanwhile, it is found that the agglomeration effects can inhibit the modulation of the concentration and functional gradient distribution patterns of graphene on the wave properties. It is noted that the center conversion frequency of out-of-plane modes and the group velocity of the conversion intersection point of out-of-plane modes are sensitive to agglomeration effects, the values of the center conversion frequency and the group velocity of the conversion intersection point increase with the weakening of the agglomeration effects. The thermal conditions that prevail in cities pose a number of challenges to urban residents and policy makers related to quality of life, health and welfare as well as to sustainable urban development. However, the changes in thermal stress due to climate change are probably not uniform among cities with different background climates. In this work, a comparative analysis of observed and projected thermal stress (cold stress, heat stress, no thermal stress) across four European cities (Helsinki, Rotterdam, Vienna, and Athens), which are representative of different geographical and climatic regions of the continent, for a recent period (1975 − 2004) and two future periods (2029 − 2058, 2069 − 2098) has been conducted. Applying a rational thermal index (Universal Thermal Climate Index) and considering two models of the EURO-CORDEX experiment (RCA4-MOHC, RCA4-MPI) under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP4.5, RCP8.5), the projected future changes in thermal conditions are inspected. The distribution of thermal stress in the current climate varies greatly between the cities, reflecting their climatic and urban heterogeneity. In the future climate, a reduction in the frequency of cold stress is expected across all cities, ranging between − 2.9% and − 16.2%. The projected increase in the frequency of optimal thermal conditions increases with increasing latitude, while the projected increase in the frequency of heat stress (ranging from + 0.2 to + 14.6%) decreases with increasing latitudes. Asymmetrical changes in cold- and heat-related stress between cities were found to affect the annual percentage of optimal (no thermal stress) conditions in future. Although future projections are expected to partly bridge the gap between the less-privileged cities (with respect to annual frequency of optimal thermal conditions) like Helsinki and Rotterdam and the more privileged ones like Athens, the former will still lag behind on an annual basis. China's urbanization process has entered a period of rapid development, and cities have become key to driving regional economic development. This paper uses data from 286 cities in China in the period 2005–2018 to construct an urban economic growth quality index system and examine the influence of spatial factors on the convergence trend of China's urban economic growth quality. It is found that there is a β absolute convergence trend of economic growth quality in Chinese cities across the whole country. After controlling for the initial conditions of individual economies, spatial factors strengthen the spatial convergence trend of urban economic growth quality and significantly increase the corresponding convergence rate. Among the areas studied, the western region has the fastest convergence rate, followed by the central and eastern regions, and the convergence rates of both the central and western regions are higher than the national average. Agglomeration economies and fiscal policy tools are important for the promotion of the urban economic growth quality. The agglomeration of productive service industries significantly improves the spatial convergence rate of urban economic growth quality. This effect is mainly due to the spatial spillover of industrial agglomeration. The expansion of government fiscal expenditure also contributes to the spatial convergence trend of urban economic growth quality. This paper re-estimates the regional job-matching function using annual panel data covering 47 Japanese prefectures from 1987 to 2013, controlling for spillovers and agglomeration effects across prefectures, in addition to prefecture-level labor market determinants and prefecture and time fixed effects. The estimates reveal that the number of job matches rises together with rising stocks of unemployed and vacancies within and across prefectures suggesting significant spillover effects. A model comparison shows that the spatial spillovers are best captured using a contiguity weight matrix and are restricted to the local labor markets. This study quantifies the impact of financial inclusion and export diversification in attaining the target of green growth for SAARC economies during the period 2000 to 2019. For the analysis purpose, this study employed second-generation econometric techniques that deal with heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence issues. To this end, CUP-FM and CUP-BC are used to investigate the long-run dynamic equilibrium relationship among the variables of interest. The outcomes show that financial inclusion and institutional quality are eco-friendly variables and play a vital role in attaining green growth. In contrast, export diversification and FDI are inversely related with green growth in SAARC economies. Furthermore, a unidirectional causality running from financial inclusion to green growth and financial inclusion to export diversification is observed. This paper uses the Global Malmquist-Luenberger Index (GMLI) based on directional distance function (DDF) super efficiency model to measure the urban green land use efficiency (UGLUE) of 108 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) from 2007 to 2018, and it utilizes the spatial economic model to analyze the impact of land finance on the UGLUE and its mechanism of action. The results show that, firstly, the UGLUE in the YREB shows a steady development trend, the overall efficiency level is high, and there are spatial agglomeration characteristics. Secondly, the impact of land finance on the UGLUE presents "inverted U-shaped." With the continuous expansion of the scale of land finance, the impact of land finance on the UGLUE in the city has changed from positive to negative. Thirdly, land finance has a spatial spillover effect. Land finance will inhibit the improvement of UGLUE in surrounding areas through the "peer effect." This paper analyses the temporal, spatial and structural linkages between the informal economic enterprises (IEEs) that have grown and spread in Bulawayo, the second largest city in Zimbabwe, and their formal economic counterparts, as well as the impact of the IEEs on the shaping and restructuring of the urban economy. To achieve this, the paper deployed a mixed methods approach which utilised survey and phenomenological case studies on the formal and informal economic enterprises in Bulawayo. The results of this study highlight the linkages between the informal and formal economic enterprises and the impact of political and economic ideology on such linkages, illustrating the spatial layering and patterning of both formal economic enterprises and IEEs in Bulawayo. The spatial structure of urban agglomeration reveals the self-organization process of internal factors from the outside. As China ushers into a critical stage with the boosting of urbanization and the booming of the economy, measuring the spatial structure of urban agglomerations is vital to urban planning, regional development, etc. Nighttime stable light data from the National Polar–Orbiting Partnership-Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP-VIIRS) night-time light (NTL) series dataset offers a novel source that potentially simulates spatial variations in socio-economic activities. The present study aimed to scientifically guide wide applications of the NPP-VIIRS data to define and measure the evolution of urban agglomeration from a spatial–temporal perspective. Yangtze River Middle Reaches (YRMR) Urban Agglomeration (UA) in Central China was taken as the case study region to systematically identify and measure its spatial configuration of urban growth. The light index model and the method of the rank clock were performed to quantify the dynamics of rank-order distributions. In the meantime, spatial statistics and location coefficient index were used to identify the nature and heterogeneity of spatial structure. According to our findings, NPP-VIIRS data can offer insights into the applications to analyze urbanization processes and reveal the dynamics of urban expansion. The proposed framework will help understand the nature and unbalance of spatial configurations of urban economic growth within urban agglomeration and lay a theoretical basis for the policy-making of regional spatial planning. Public policies often fail to address the unintended behavior of regulated firms and are therefore inconsistent in their implementation, resulting in ineffectiveness. In the process of environmental policy, policy implementation inconsistencies also exist, which is known as emission leakage. Existing studies on the topic focus more on spatial dimension and less attention to time dimension. The reasons for emission leakage over time are two: regulatory laxness and inefficiencies. In this study, we examine whether emission leakage occurs during enterprises' end-of-life cycles. Based on unique high-frequency facility-level monitoring data, we construct a difference-in-differences (DID) model to investigate differences in environmental performance between hazardous chemical production firms in the process of closing and those in the same industry within 20 kilometers. This study finds no emission leakage problem in the processes of relocation and closure, and the concentration of chemical oxygen demand (COD) discharged declines by 28.53 percent. This result is mainly due to top-down regulatory requirements. Nevertheless, policymakers should remain aware of emission leakage when formulating environmental policies and create more substantial supervision to prevent potential leakage. Despite a large number of studies examining the relationship between corporate social responsibility disclosure (CSRD) and corporate financial performance (CFP), the literature remains inconclusive. Moreover, most of the studies are conducted in the context of American and European firms and remain scarce in the context of developing economies. To bridge this significant gap, this study attempts to investigate the strength of the relationship between CSRD and CFP of Indian firms. The study uses ESG (environmental, social and governance) score as a proxy for CSRD and investigates its relationship with both market-based and accounting-based financial performance measures for Indian companies. Both aggregate and disaggregate analyses based on industry type are carried out. The study includes a sample of 287 companies from the financial year 2014–2015 to 2018–2019 and employs panel data regression using pooled ordinary least squares (OLS), fixed effect and random effect model. The findings indicate that CSR disclosure has varying effects on CFP metrics. For industries—consumer goods, consumer services and heavy engineering, CSRD is positively associated with CFP, while for healthcare and energy and utility firms, the relationship between CSRD and CFP is negative. Overall, the type of industry, as well as the type of financial performance indicator, shows varying CSRD–CFP dynamics. The relevance of this study lies in the increasing importance of social responsibility and the growing contribution of emerging markets in international business. When it comes to evaluating the causal effect of public policies on corporate performance, most studies tend to focus exclusively on targeted firms, as if these firms have no relationship to the rest of the economy. Yet, public policies are highly likely to influence non-targeted firms indirectly due to the relationships they have with targeted firms. This paper aims to fill this gap by evaluating the indirect causal effect of a new French cluster-innovation policy on the financial and employment outcomes of non-targeted companies. To do so, it focuses on French Technological Research Institutes, which are science-industry collaborations based on technology platforms that bring together SMEs, large companies, universities, and public research bodies with the goal of accelerating the transfer of knowledge towards firms and generating spillovers (indirect effects) inside and outside the scheme. Based on the literature on spillover effects and agglomeration economies, it can be assumed that industry-specific spillovers tend to be spatially concentrated. By comparing a non-targeted firm located in the NUTS-3 regions within which the policy was implemented (referred to as "treated regions"), to a non-targeted firm outside of these "treated regions", using a difference-in-differences method with fixed effects applied to panel data (2008–2016) combined with a double matching at the NUTS-3 region and firm level, we find that non-targeted firms located in the "treated regions" significantly improve their financial performance (turnover, financial autonomy) compared to control firms located in the NUTS-3 control regions. The dynamics of employment outcomes are ambiguous. A negative significant effect is observed on the proportion of managers at the beginning of the policy and a positive significant effect is noted later, at the end of the period of observation. Actor-level data on large-scale commercial agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa are scarce. The peculiar choice of transnational investing in African land has, therefore, been subject to conjecture. Addressing this gap, we reconstructed the underlying logics of investment location choices in a Bayesian network, using firm- and actor-level interview and spatial data from 37 transnational agriculture and forestry investments across 121 sites in Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. We distinguish four investment locations across gradients of resource frontiers and agglomeration economies to derive the preferred locations of different investors with varied skillsets and market reach (i.e., track record). In contrast to newcomers, investors with extensive track records are more likely to expand the land use frontier, but they are also likely to survive the high transaction costs of the pre-commercial frontier. The act of balancing simultaneous rapid development of urbanization and ecological environmental protection is an increasingly important strategic agenda of national importance. While focusing on the principle of sustainable development, this paper calculates and analyzes the extent of coupling coordination degree (CCD) between the new urbanization quality (NUQ) and eco-environmental carrying capacity (EECC) of 246 prefecture level and above cities in China. The gravity center moving trajectory, Moran's I and LISA are employed to perform exploratory spatial analysis, and the differences among cities are analyzed by variation coefficient (CV) method. Based on simulation by the NUQ and CCD, results obtained show a continuous growth trend at similar rate among the cities. Meanwhile, the mean value of EECC showed a fluctuating growth trend. The coordinated development type cities were largely concentrated in the coastal areas of the east. In comparison, other areas are dominated by disorders recession type cities and the coordination transition type cities. The center of gravity CCD was found moving from the northeast to the southwest. The situation of HH (CDD main city—high, CDD surrounding cities—high) and LL (CDD main city—low, CDD surrounding cities—low) always accounted for more than seventy percent. The cluster locations of HH and LH (CDD main city—low, CDD surrounding cities—high) are largely concentrated around mega-urban agglomerations comprising the following three major urban agglomerations, i.e., (i) the Yangtze River Delta; (ii) the Pearl River Delta; and (iii) the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei. CV of CCD shows that the gap among cities is gradually narrowing. In summary, the results conclude that most of the evaluated cities have not achieved coordinated development. As such, enhancing ecological environment protection awareness, improving the utilization effectiveness of natural resources and gradual elimination of regional differences should be the way forward in facilitating the process of new urban construction. The significance of this research not only helps increase the focus on ecological environmental governance, but also enrich the theoretical system of urbanization, both of which have important theoretical significance and application values in the building of an ecological civilization. With 80% of the world's carbon emissions coming from urban areas and most part of the world still experiencing ever accelerated process of urbanization, China faces huge pressure to achieve the carbon emission peaking in 2030 and realizes the goal of carbon neutrality before 2050. Therefore, this study explored the spatial variability of CO2 emissions from urban construction land among 30 provinces in China, analyzed its driving factors and estimated their potentials for emission reductions from 2000 to 2018. The results demonstrate that: (1) according to the IPCC model, both the carbon emission amounts and carbon emission intensity from urban construction land showed an upward trend from 2000 to 2018. (2) Decomposition analysis of logarithmic mean Divisia index revealed that economic level has positive impact on carbon emissions. Energy efficiency and energy structure are the negative contribution factors to the carbon emissions, and the energy efficiency effect played a more important inhabiting factor. (3) The carbon emission reduction potential indexes was provided to estimate the carbon emission reduction potential of 30 provinces in China; it indicated that 17 provinces have their carbon emission reduction potential indexes less than 1, and they confront with mandatory push to reduce carbon emission under the current national policy. Finally, promoting clean energy and applying internet of things into energy transport corridor system and more low-carbon land planning policies are suggested to facilitate more effective implementation of carbon emissions reduction actions in China. This paper investigates the economy-wide impact of the uptake of circular economy (CE) measures for the small open economy (SOE) of Belgium, in particular the impact of fiscal policies in support of lifetime extension through repair activities of household appliances. The impact assessment is completed by means of a computable general equilibrium model as this allows quantification of both the direct and indirect economic and environmental impact of simulated shocks. The results show that different fiscal policy types can steer an economy into a more circular direction. However, depending on the policy type, the impact on the SOE's macroeconomic structure and level of circularity differs. Furthermore, common claims attributed to a CE (e.g. local job creation or decreased import dependence) can be, but are not always, valid. Hence, policy-makers must prioritize their most important macroeconomic goals and opt for an according fiscal policy. Finally, this paper finds that the CO2 equivalent emissions calculated from a production (or territorial) perspective increase, while they decrease from a consumption perspective. This is explained by the substitution of international activities by local circular activities. This study investigates the impact of economic complexity on carbon emissions for OECD countries over the period 1971–2018. Economic complexity is taken as an indicator of the sophisticated and knowledge-based production process of an economy. The empirical analysis is conducted by using both the first- and second-generation panel unit root tests (URTs) and panel cointegration tests, cross-sectional dependence tests, error correction model (ECM), fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) and fixed effects quantile regression (FE-QR). According to panel URTs and panel cointegration tests, all variables are stationary at the first difference and cointegrated, respectively. The FMOLS results reveal that the impact of economic complexity on carbon emissions is positive and statistically significant in the long run. In addition, the environmental Kuznets curve theory is also validated in these economies. The household sector has become the second-largest source of energy consumption and CO2 emissions in China. It is important to understand the trends and changing mechanisms of household energy-related CO2 emissions (HECEs) in different social stages for mitigating the impact of climate change. However, the existing trends in HECEs and whether they are congruent with the expectation that HECEs in later developed areas are lower than those in priority areas under the same economic level are unclear. Here, we compared the per capita HECEs (PHECEs) of urban agglomerations under the same economic standards and analyzed the causes of the comparative results. We find that (1) HECEs increased rapidly from 3.65 × 108 t to 12.42 × 108 t during 1995–2017, with an average annual growth rate of 14.19%; (2) urban agglomerations that developed earlier do not have higher PHECEs. The PHECEs of urban agglomerations with moderate and later development do not decrease under increased social, technological, and cognitive conditions; (3) carbon intensity (CI), energy intensity (EI), and per capita regional gross domestic product (PCG) have a positive impact on PHECEs, and the potential impact of EI on PHECEs reduction is greater; (4) the effects of CI, EI, and PCG on PHECEs in different urban agglomerations are various. However, these effects are similar within urban agglomerations. Our study provides a reference for reducing CO2 emissions in the household sector and for the green development of urban agglomerations and emphasizes that the growth of HECE at a reasonable level is necessary when technology does not meet sufficient constraints. In modern times, enhancing energy efficiency is one of the core agenda items for the economies to progress the world. United Nations general assembly has recommended increasing energy efficiency by considering the SDG-7 guidelines. In the contemporary period, E7 economies are deficient in producing the financial resources to ensure the availability of funds for the acquisition of energy efficiency. COVID-19 crises, lack of resilience in economies, devastating fiscal burdens, and tight monetary conditions of E7 economies are the major barriers. To resolve such issues, some innovative financing techniques, such as green financing, financial inclusion, and FinTech, were suggested to investigate. However, this research tested the empirical role of financial inclusion, green financing, and FinTech on the energy efficiency of E7 economies. Study findings have shown a significant role of such financing techniques on energy efficiency. Comparatively, green financing is found most fitting and highly supportive financing tool for energy efficiency among the three. The differences in attributes, financing mechanism, funds flow system, transection systems, and variation in support by the financial institution are the main reasons that lessen the role of financial inclusion and FinTech for energy efficiency. However, theorists must revisit the transaction system of FinTech and financial inclusion parameters like green bonds for energy efficiency attainment. With the rapid development of China, urbanization has become an important research topic of China's CO2 emissions. To fill the gap in considering the spatial correlation of the comprehensive urbanization that includes multi-dimensional factors on CO2 emissions from urban civil buildings (UBEC), this study constructs a comprehensive evaluation indicator of urbanization from four aspects including population, economy, society, and land urbanization by using the entropy method. The spatial spillover effect of UBEC and the impact of comprehensive urbanization on UBEC are also studied by using the spatial panel model in this paper. This study finds out that UBEC has obvious spatial spillover effects. During the early years of the study period, the eastern coastal areas had greater carbon emissions, while in recent years, they have gradually transitioned to the northwestern regions. Comprehensive urbanization has a significant promotion effect on it. And foreign direct investment and per capita energy consumption also have positive impact on UBEC. This study provides a reference for measuring the effects of urbanization on sector-specific CO2 emissions and may be useful for energy efficiency and emission abatement efforts in China. The Montney Play Trend (MPT) is a 1090 km2 region in northeast British Columbia that produces approximately one-third of western Canada's natural gas output. In response to a proposed expansion of the MPT in 2016, the Government of British Columbia launched a Regional Strategic Environmental Assessment (RSEA) to identify the necessary conditions to achieve sustainable environmental outcomes. In this paper, we describe the methods and scenario planning tools that were developed to estimate how the development of the MPT might affect the subsistence economies of First Nations in the region. To demonstrate the utility of our approach, two impact assessments—Prince Rupert gas transmission pipeline and the Coastal GasLink pipeline—are presented. While no scenario can provide a definitive portrayal of exactly what will happen in the future, the tools that were co-developed are serving as an effective starting point for exploring possibilities that are at least consistent with current knowledge and can serve as a platform for collaborative learning and conflict management. Most of the existing studies on the pollution haven hypothesis focus on the foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow, ignoring the divestment of FDI and the role of competition. Based on Chinese firm-level data, we investigate the relationship between environmental regulation (ER) and the exit of foreign firms from China. The results indicate that ER does not cause foreign firms to leave China, but rather reduces the probability of foreign firms exiting China. This effect is present in eastern China and the medium-polluting industries. We innovatively explore the underlying mechanisms from the perspective of firm competition and market competition environment. Firm competition mechanism finds that ER promotes foreign firms' business performance (market share, profits, and productivity) but undermines the domestic firms' business performance, thus reducing the probability of foreign firms leaving. Furthermore, the market competition environment plays a positive moderating effect. ER has a greater role in reducing the probability of foreign firms' exit when regions have higher market competition. Our findings offer a basis for the Chinese government to formulate environmental protection policies and provide experience for other developing countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to capture characteristic agglomeration patterns in population data in Germany from 1987 to 2011, encompassing pre- and post-unification periods. We utilize a group-theoretic double Fourier spectrum analysis procedure (Ikeda et al. 2018) as a systematic means to capture characteristic agglomeration patterns in population data. Among a plethora of patterns to be self-organized from a uniform state, we focus on a megalopolis pattern, a rhombic pattern, and a core–satellite pattern (a downtown surrounded by hexagonal satellite cities). As the technical contribution of this paper, we newly introduce a principal vector as a superposition of these patterns in order to grasp the multi-scale nature of agglomerations. Benchmark spectra for these patterns are advanced and are found in the population data of Germany in 2011. An incremental population is investigated using this principal vector to successfully detect a shift of predominant population increase/decrease patterns in the pre- and post-unification periods.
