Cyanide and heavy metals pose significant risks as contaminants in certain industrial effluents. This study aims to concurrently eliminate cyanide and specific heavy metals from synthetic wastewater resembling gold processing effluent, employing an improved electrocoagulation method incorporating ozone and UV-LED. The investigation delves into the effects of pH, electrode type, current density, reaction time, and ozonation. The findings revealed notable removal efficiencies: 98% for cyanide, 76% for nickel, 85% for copper, and 84% for zinc when utilizing a stainless steel electrode as the cathode. Optimal removal rates were achieved at 94% for cyanide, 93% for copper, 92% for zinc, and 83% for nickel, employing the UV-LED-ozone technique with an ozonation flow rate of 4 mg/s at pH = 10. Notably, when Al-Gr-SS-Fe electrodes and a current of 15 mA/cm2 were applied, these removal efficiencies were observed. Therefore, the most favorable conditions for the concurrent removal of pollutants from synthetic wastewater involved maintaining a pH of 10, utilizing SS-Fe as anode and Al-Gr as cathode electrodes, and employing a current density of 15 mA/cm2. The addition of ozonation with a flow rate of 4 mg/s, along with UV-LED, further enhanced the removal process. In summary, it can be inferred that the enhanced electrocoagulation method outperformed conventional electrocoagulation, leading to increased elimination of cyanide and selected heavy metals. One of the challenges of the twenty-first century is related to the discharge and disposal of mine effluents and wastewater resulting from mine dewatering, precipitation, and surface runoff in mines, especially acidic effluents that contain a variety of toxic and heavy metals and are the main sources of surface and groundwater pollution. Various physical, chemical, and biological methods have been developed and used to treat mine effluents. All proposed methods have their own disadvantages that make their use challenging. One of the new methods used for wastewater treatment is the electrical coagulation process, which has attracted the attention of researchers in recent years due to its advantages such as simplicity, environmental friendliness, and low cost. The present review focused on the applications of electrocoagulation for mine wastewater treatment as well as metals recovery. Treatment and reuse of water in wetlands are considered as an alternative, cost-effective, economical, and environment-friendly method. In most cases, salinity degree of purified water is increased especially in arid and semiarid regions. Using phytoremediation method can help to solve the said problem to a great extent. In this study, tests with different salinity densities were conducted on three species of saline plants Frankenia thymifolia, Atriplex cinerea cinerea, Festuca ovina within 60 days in order to assess the ability of reducing water salinity. Then, the trend of electrical conductivity reduction, percentage of salinity removal, and behavior of plants in different salinity levels were analyzed statistically. The trend of electrical conductivity reduction was reduced in each three species of plant with the increased salinity level, so that maximum rate of salt intake for Frankenia thymifolia in electrical conductivity stood at 4500 μS/cm (approx. 20%), for Festuca ovina in electrical conductivity at 2600 μS/cm (approx. 17%) and for Atriplex cinerea cinerea plant in electrical conductivity at 5000 μS/cm (approx. 14%). Of course, reducing the ability of salt absorption in each species of the plant had its own specific reason. For example, Atriplex cinerea plant faced fadedness and reduced performance due to the less compatibility with the waterlogging environment. Festuca ovina plant faced paleness and reduced performance due to the outbreak of salinity stress. In addition, Frankenia thymifolia plant faced paleness and reduced performance due to the completion of the capacity of salt accumulation in its tissues. Accordingly, Atriplex cinerea plant showed maximum rate of reduced salinity than the other two species of the plants in the interval of increased salinity. In the same direction, Frankenia thymifolia plant showed maximum rate of reduced salinity in the efficiency of reduced salinity after the stoppage of increased load of salinity due to the more durability of this plant in this efficiency period. Treatment of organic leachate is one the most controversial topics around the world which led this study to assess the efficiency of the combined oxidation and adsorption treatment (COAT) process in the treatment of forest polluting site (FPS) leachate by considering local experiments. The removal of effluent parameters (TDS, COD, BOD) was enhanced by oxidizing the GAC surface as a catalyst with NaOH before the process and by ozone within the procedure as well. comparison between COAT process and ozone-GAC was investigated based on variation in ozone dose, H2O2 and pH. Assessing the interacting effect of operating variables (i.e., ozone concentration, GAC density, reaction time and pH) provides valuable information for optimization. Response surface methodology (RSM) and for better prediction, another modeling tool, artificial neural networks (ANN), were employed. Moreover, the results of both software were compared and ANN showed a higher R2 of 0.908, 0.923, and 0.919 for TDS, COD, and BOD respectively in contrast with RSM (R2: TDS = 0.8538, COD = 0.9105, BOD = 0.8108). The optimized model's circumstances are the reaction time of 30.77 min, ozone dosage of 141.29 mg/l, pH of 7.2, and the GAC density of 1.29 gr/cm3 with the predicted removal percentage of 51.63%, 62.84%, and 56.13% for TDS, COD, and BOD respectively. Meanwhile, in the experimental situation among the various methods, the COAT process by the removal percentage of TDS = 59.47%, COD = 68.37%, and BOD = 67% showed proper efficiency. This study was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of compounds containing iron and manganese to reduce the mobility of arsenic and its effective adsorption and optimize the arsenic adsorption process by CCD. In this study, MnFe2O4 nanoparticles (MFO-n) were synthesized using the co-precipitation method to remove arsenic and reduce its toxicity in solution. Several tests including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) tests were used to characterize the synthesized MFO-n. To model and optimize the As adsorption process using the response surface methodology, four independent variables affecting the efficiency of arsenic adsorption were investigated. These variables including pH (3 to 11), concentration of arsenic in solution (1000 to 4000 µg/L), concentration of nanoparticles (1 to 5 g/L), and time (15 to 195 min) were investigated. The central composite design (CCD) approach was used to design the experiments and optimize the model parameters. The variance analysis indicated that the prediction of As adsorption from solution by the synthesized nanoadsorbent using the CCD model was well performed (p < 0.0001) with high accuracy (R2 = 0.97). The results further indicated that the optimum quantity of pH, concentration of nanoparticles, time, and initial concentration of As are 5, 2 g/L, 60 min, and 3250 µg/L, respectively. The highest As elimination from the solution was estimated to be 94.77%. Our results further indicated that MFO-n had high efficiency in eliminating both toxic arsenic species from the solution. Background: Biochars are the new generation of sustainable soil amendments which may be applied both to fertilize and remediate the impacted soils. The aim of current research has been synthesis and characterization of pulp and paper-derived biochars and determination of their mechanisms in simultaneous immobilization of heavy metals (Cu2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+) within contaminated soil. In a novel attempt, three different solid wastes of Mazandaran Wood and Paper Industries (barks and effluent sludge) were utilized to produce biochars. Methods: The thermogravimetric behavior of the three selected biomasses were initially analyzed and the proper pyrolysis condition has been determined, accordingly. Alterations in surface active groups, before and after the pyrolysis process, have been detected by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Elemental analysis and acid digestion procedure have been employed to measure C, H, N, S, O, and P contents of the biochars. Moreover, porosity and morphological characteristics have been monitored by Brauner-Emmet-Teller (BET) porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Batch adsorption tests have been designed and carried out. Finally, a set of soil sequential extraction experiments was performed over both amended/unamended soils which together with a post-sorption FTIR analysis, explained the possible competitive immobilization mechanism. Results: Porosimetry study indicated the nanoporosity of the chars and the distribution pattern of adsorbed metals over the char samples. Batch sorption tests suggested remarkable uptake capacity for each char. The results of post sorption tests suggested that Cu is mainly involved in organic bonds of -NH2, -OH and -COOH groups, Pb forms insoluble hydroxide, phosphate or carbonate precipitates, and Zn is mostly engaged in the residual fraction. An organic-inorganic composite of chitosan, nanoclay, and biochar (named as MTCB) was chosen to develop a bionanocomposite to simultaneously immobilize Cu, Pb, and Zn metal ions within the contaminated soil and water environments. The composite material was structurally and chemically characterized with the XRD, TEM, SEM, BET, and FT-IR techniques. XRD and TEM results revealed that a mixed exfoliated/intercalated morphology was formed upon addition of small amounts of nanoclay (5% by weight). Batch adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption capacity of MTCB for Cu2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+ were much higher than that of the pristine biochar sample (121.5, 336, and 134.6 mg g−1 for Cu2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+, respectively). The adsorption isotherm for Cu2+ and Zn2+ fitted satisfactorily to a Freundlich model while the isotherm of Pb2+ was best represented by a Temkin model. That the adsorption capacity increased with increasing temperature is indicative of the endothermic nature of the adsorption process. According to the FTIR analysis, the main mechanism involved in immobilization of metals is binding with -NH2 groups. Results from this study indicated that modification of biochar by chitosan/clay nanocomposite enhances its potential capacity for immobilization of heavy metals, rendering the bionanocomposite into an efficient heavy metal sorbent in mine-impacted acidic waters and soils. The current study emphasizes on the applicability of combining the electrokinetic (EK) and permeable reactive barriers (PRB) techniques compared to the simple EK technique. For this purpose, a statistical analysis is conducted using the Fractional Factorial Design statistical method. Also, General Linear Model and Two-sample T-Test analyzes are considered to clarify which type of soil remediation technique represents the highest efficiency. Calcium peroxide, an affordable material with easy capability for cultivation, is utilized in the PRB process to eliminate the soil from diesel contamination. The experiments were performed for 3 days and 10 days, according to which the initial contamination rates of 10 and 20% were selected, and the applied voltages were 20 V and 30 V. Using the innovative remediation technique, the experiments were conducted for 10 days with 20% initial pollution content and the applied voltage of 30 V, the initial gasoil content was about 190.5 mg/g, and after applying the proposed technique, the average final pollution content throughout soil reached approximately 37 mg/g. This experiment was also conducted for the approximately initial gasoil content of 185, 206, and 191 mg/g, which led to the removal efficiency of 79.59%, 78.93%, and 79.15%, respectively. The main novelty of this paper is attributed to the use of calcium peroxide in the EK-PRB technique and the statistical analysis conducted in this study that indicates the remarkable efficiency of the proposed approach.
