Purpose: Incomplete partition type II (IP-II) is characterized by specific histological features and radiological appearance. It may occur in isolation or in association with an enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA). Among those with IP-II and EVA, a subset has a diagnosis of Pendred syndrome. This study aimed to explore the prevalence of isolated IP-II, IP-II with EVA, and cases with a genetic or syndromic basis in our cohort. Methods: From a large, multicentre database of dysplastic cochleae (446 patients, 892 temporal bones), those with imaging features of IP-II were examined in detail, including whether there was a genetic or syndromic association. Results: A total of 78 patients with IP-II were identified. Among these, 55 patients had bilateral IP-II and EVA (only 12 with typical Mondini triad), 8 with bilateral IP-II and normal VA, 2 with bilateral IP-II and unilateral EVA, and 13 with unilateral IP-II (9 with unilateral EVA). Among the group with bilateral IP-II and bilateral EVA in whom genetic analysis was available, 14 out of 29 (48%) had SLC26A4 mutations and a diagnosis of Pendred syndrome, 1 had a FOXI1 mutation, and a few other genetic abnormalities; none had KCNJ10 pathogenic variants. Conclusion: Bilateral IP-II-bilateral EVA may be seen in the context of Pendred syndrome (SLC26A4 or FOXI1 mutations) but, in the majority of our cohort, no genetic abnormalities were found, suggesting the possibility of unknown genetic associations. Climate change is causing major changes in terrestrial ecosystems and biomes around the world. This is particularly concerning in oceanic islands, considered reservoirs of biodiversity, even more in those with a significant altitudinal gradient and high complexity in the vegetation they potentially harbour. Here, in Tenerife (Canary Islands), we have evaluated the changes in potential vegetation belts during the last 20 years by comparing them with a previous study. Considering the intimate linkage between vegetation and climate, we used a methodology based on phytosociological knowledge, ordination techniques and geostatistics, using multivariate spatial interpolations of bioclimatic data. This has allowed us to spatially detect the variations experienced by eight vegetation units during the last 20 years and incorporating a set of vulnerability metrics. New bioclimatic and vegetation cartography are provided according to the current scenario studied (1990–2019). Our results indicate that summit vegetation, humid laurel forest and thermo-sclerophyllous woodland are the habitats that have experienced a very high area loss and mismatch index, strong changes, if we consider that we are only comparing a period of 20 years. Simultaneously, the more xeric vegetation belts, the dry laurel forest and the pine forest would have benefited from this new warmer and drier climate, by gaining area and experiencing strong upward movements. These changes have not been spatially uniform, indicating that the elevational gradient studied not explain completely our results, showing the influence of the complex island topography. Effective landscape management should consider current remnants, transition capacity and movement limitations to better understand current and future vegetation responses in a global change context. Circulating proteins may provide insights into the varying biological mechanisms involved in heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). We aimed to identify specific proteomic patterns for HF, by comparing proteomic profiles across the ejection fraction spectrum. We investigated 4210 circulating proteins in 739 patients with normal (Stage A/Healthy) or elevated (Stage B) filling pressures, HFpEF, or ischemic HFrEF (iHFrEF). We found 2122 differentially expressed proteins between iHFrEF-Stage A/Healthy, 1462 between iHFrEF–HFpEF and 52 between HFpEF-Stage A/Healthy. Of these 52 proteins, 50 were also found in iHFrEF vs. Stage A/Healthy, leaving SLITRK6 and NELL2 expressed in lower levels only in HFpEF. Moreover, 108 proteins, linked to regulation of cell fate commitment, differed only between iHFrEF–HFpEF. Proteomics across the HF spectrum reveals overlap in differentially expressed proteins compared to stage A/Healthy. Multiple proteins are unique for distinguishing iHFrEF from HFpEF, supporting the capacity of proteomics to discern between these conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Lymphopenia is a known side effect of dimethyl fumarate (DMF), a disease-modifying therapy (DMT) for patients with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). A body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2 has been identified as a protective factor; however, no data are available on lymphopenia in pwMS undergoing to weight loss due to bariatric surgery. Methods: We described two pwMS with history of bariatric surgery who started DMF as DMT. Results: The two pwMS experienced persistent lymphopenia during DMF-treatment, which was resolved after its discontinuation. Conclusions: Several mechanisms might modify DMF pharmacokinetic profiles after bariatric surgery and its bioavailability. Adult spine deformity (ASD) is prevalent and leads to a sagittal misalignment in the vertebral column. Computational methods, including Finite Element (FE) Models, have emerged as valuable tools for investigating the causes and treatment of ASD through biomechanical simulations. However, the process of generating personalised FE models is often complex and time-consuming. To address this challenge, we present a dataset of FE models with diverse spine morphologies that statistically represent real geometries from a cohort of patients. These models are generated using EOS images, which are utilized to reconstruct 3D surface spine models. Subsequently, a Statistical Shape Model (SSM) is constructed, enabling the adaptation of a FE hexahedral mesh template for both the bone and soft tissues of the spine through mesh morphing. The SSM deformation fields facilitate the personalization of the mean hexahedral FE model based on sagittal balance measurements. Ultimately, this new hexahedral SSM tool offers a means to generate a virtual cohort of 16807 thoracolumbar FE spine models, which are openly shared in a public repository. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Knowing how metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is indicated in different countries is essential information for the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO). Aim: To analyze the indications for MBS recommended by each of the national societies that comprise the IFSO and how MBS is financed in their countries. Methods: All IFSO societies were asked to fill out a survey asking whether they have, and which are their national guidelines, and if MBS is covered by their public health service. Results: Sixty-three out of the 72 IFSO national societies answered the form (87.5%). Among them, 74.6% have some kind of guidelines regarding indications for MBS. Twenty-two percent are still based on the US National Institute of Health (NIH) 1991 recommendations, 43.5% possess guidelines midway the 1991s and ASMBS/IFSO 2022 ones, and 34% have already adopted the latest ASMBS/IFSO 2022 guidelines. MBS was financially covered in 65% of the countries. Conclusions: Most of the IFSO member societies have MBS guidelines. While more than a third of them have already shifted to the most updated ASMBS/IFSO 2022 ones, another significant number of countries are still following the NIH 1991 guidelines or even do not have any at all. Besides, there is a significant number of countries in which surgical treatment is not yet financially covered. Over the last decade, grit and self-regulated strategies have gained growing significance due to their relationship with improvements at both the personal and academic levels. In this line, numerous studies have investigated both constructs as protective factors against academic failure, but none of them have examined the association between both constructs in secondary education students with the purpose of improving their understanding. Therefore, this study fills a knowledge gap by investigating how grit predicts the use of self-regulatory learning strategies with a sample of 965 participants in high school. For this purpose, grit, learning strategies, and motivation were measured. The findings suggest that grit might serve as a significant predictor of the components of self-regulated learning. Thus, gritty learners orient their motivation and efforts toward meaningful goals, potentially enhancing their scholastic achievements​​. Heavy metals are naturally omnipresent in aquatic systems. Excess amounts of heavy metals can accumulate in organisms of pollution impacted systems and transfer across a food web. Analysing the food web structure and metal contents of the organisms can help unravel the pathways of biomagnification or biodilution and gain insight in trophic linkages. We measured heavy metals and other elements in mussel bank detritus and organisms of the Biesbosch reservoirs (the Netherlands) and linked those to stable isotopic signatures. The heavy metal contents (cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc) were often lowest in benthivorous, omnivorous and piscivorous species (mainly fish); whereas, phosphorus contents were lower in the autotrophs. Mussel bank detritus contained the highest amounts of heavy metals. The heavy metals were negatively correlated with δ15N values. For selenium no clear trend was observed. Furthermore, there was a negative correlation between fish length and some heavy metals. Based on all 20 analysed elemental contents, similarities between species became apparent, related to niche or habitat. This study confirms that elemental contents of species can differ between feeding guilds and/or species, which can be attributed to metabolic and physiological processes. The organisms in higher trophic levels have adaptations preventing metal accumulation, resulting in lower contents. Within the fish species biodilution occurs, as most metal contents were lowest in bigger fish. Overall, the metals did not seem to biomagnify, but biodilute in the food web. Metal analyses combined with isotopic signatures could thus provide insights in metal transfer and possible trophic linkages within a system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The European Habitats Directive prescribes Member States to report on trends in abundance and distribution of protected species. One of these species is Graphoderus bilineatus (De Geer, 1774), a middle-sized predaceous aquatic beetle, listed in Annex II and IV of the Habitats Directive. In the Netherlands, a monitoring scheme for this species has been set up to assess the national trend as well as the trend in the national Natura2000 sites. In this scheme, a selection of 1 km2 squares is surveyed in cycles of six years using a standardized field method by professional fieldworkers. In each selected square, five locations were sampled per annum (September–October) by two different observers using hand netting. The data of the first two rounds (2011–2016 and 2017–2022) have been analysed using both an occupancy model and a Poisson GLMM. We found evidence of a declining trend in occupancy as well as in population size. The decreases were stronger outside than within Natura2000 sites and also stronger than those of three other beetle species that are often found together with G. bilineatus. In addition, considerable differences between observers were detected in the data, despite the application of a standardized field method. Implications for insect conservation: Graphoderus bilineatus is declining and the decline is stronger outside Natura2000 sites then within, most likely due to differences in the development of water quality, vegetation structure and water management. Further research is required to identify the exact causes of the decline; however water quality improvement seems essential to turn the tide. The hypothesis was tested that the performance of lactating ewes is affected by the supplementation level and pasture management. Two supplementation levels (0.5 and 1.0% of body weight, BW) and two pasture managements (mowed and non-mowed) were tested. Forty adult ewes (2 years old) with an average weight at lambing of 62.97 ± 7.0 kg (day 0) and an average the body condition score of 2.5 points (day 0) were evaluated. Verminosis was monitored with periodic deworming. The number of eggs per gram of feces (EPG) of ewes at lambing was used as a covariate for performance assessments. Ewes lost an average of 7.5 kg over the 90 days post-partum (12% BW). The weaning rate was 53%. The body condition of the ewes was influenced by the post-partum period. The ewes mobilized their body reserves in the first 30 days of lactation. Mowing management negatively affected the nutritive value of the forage. Supplementation with 0.5% BW was sufficient for nutritional management post-partum. Pasture management (mowed vs. not mowed) cannot prevent post-partum weight loss. Past studies have revealed the benefits of rodent participation in the colonization process of oak species. Certain rodent species (Apodemus sylvaticus and Mus spretus) partially consume acorns, beginning at the basal part and preserving the embryo. Perea et al. (2011) and Yang and Yi (2012) found that during periods of abundance, the remains left after partial consumption continue to be present on the surface and are not transported to caches, given that they are perceived as leftovers. These remains, produced after several visits by the cache owner or by thieving conspecifics, also appear in the caches. If they are perceived as offal, they will not be attacked and may remain in these stores for longer periods, serving as resources for the cache builder. Our objective is to determine whether these remnants are perceived as offal by the rodent generating them or if the remains left by other rodents are considered offal. This is relevant in cases of theft, a common behavior of this species, if the thieving animals reject the remains. The results suggest that foreign remains and the rodents' own remains are not rejected, but rather, they are consumed in preference to intact acorns. The intact acorns remain in the cache for longer periods and have a greater opportunity to germinate and emerge. Rodents prefer to consume foreign remains first. This may be due to the fact that, in case of shortage, it is considered advantageous to finish the reserves of a potential competitor before depleting one's own reserves. Significance statement: Rodents participate in the acorn dissemination process by constructing surface stores (caches). The rodent species studied here partially consumes acorns, beginning with the basal part and preserving the embryo located at the apical end. These partially consumed acorn remains are considered offal and remain in the caches for longer periods, serving as reserves for the rodent. Our objective is to examine whether these acorn remains are viewed as offal by the rodents. We have found that, to the contrary, they are consumed before intact acorns. Intact acorns remain in the caches for longer periods, assuming the role of reserves and taking on a greater capacity to germinate. This species of rodent differentiates between its own remains and those of others, first consuming the foreign offal. Therefore, their own offal remains in the stores for longer periods and may potentially germinate if the embryo is preserved. This behavior has been demonstrated by this rodent species. Introduction: Os odontoideum refers to a rounded ossicle detached from a hypoplastic odontoid process at the body of the axis. The aetiology has been debated and believed to be either congenital or acquired (resulting from trauma). Os odontoideum results in incompetence of the transverse ligament and thus predisposes to atlantoaxial instability and spinal cord injury. Methods/results: Three cases of children with severe dystonic cerebral palsy presenting with myelopathic deterioration secondary to atlantoaxial instability due to os odontoideum are presented. This observation supports the hypothesis of os odontoideum being an acquired phenomenon, secondary to chronic excessive movement with damage to the developing odontoid process. Conclusion: In children with cerebral palsy and dystonia, pre-existing motor deficits may conceal an evolving myelopathy and result in delayed diagnosis of clinically significant atlantoaxial subluxation. Two episodes of bacteremia of cutaneous origin in a female patient were caused by two unrelated Streptococcus canis isolates within 1-year interval between the two infection episodes. The most likelihood transmission route in both episodes was a dog pet that habitually licked patient´s legs. Isolates were characterised by antimicrobial susceptibility test and whole genome sequencing. They belonged to sequence type (ST) 40 and 43, respectively. The ST40 isolate harboured antimicrobial resistance genes aadE, ermB and tetO, displaying resistance to erythromycin, clindamycin and tetracyclines, while ST43 isolate did not presented any known antimicrobial resistance determinant and was susceptible to all antibiotics tested. This letter, published in Clinical Neuroradiology, discusses a case of an 8-year-old girl with Noonan syndrome (NS) who presented with episodes of headache. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed three lesions in the cerebellum that showed changes in size and signal intensity over time. These findings are consistent with focal areas of signal intensity (FASI), which have been previously observed in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Objective: Foramen magnum(FM) stenosis can be responsible for acute and chronic damage to the cervicomedullary junction in children with achondroplasia. The bony anatomy and patterns of suture fusion of the FM in this context are incompletely understood, yet becoming increasingly important in the light of novel medical therapies for achondroplasia. The objective of this study was to describe and quantify bony anatomy and fusion patterns of FM stenosis in patients with achondroplasia using CT scans, comparing them to age-matched controls and other FGFR3 craniosynostosis patients. Methods: Patients with achondroplasia and severe FM stenosis, classified as achondroplasia foramen magnum score(AFMS) grades 3 and 4, were identified from a departmental operative database. All had pre-operative CT scans of the craniocervical junction. Measurements obtained comprised sagittal diameter (SD), transverse diameter (TD), foramen magnum area, and opisthion thickness. Anterior and posterior interoccipital synchondroses (AIOS and PIOS) were graded by the extent of fusion. These measurements were then compared with CT scans from 3 age-matched groups: the normal control group, children with Muenke syndrome, and children with Crouzon syndrome with acanthosis nigricans (CSAN). Results: CT scans were reviewed in 23 cases of patients with achondroplasia, 23 normal controls, 20 Muenke, and 15 CSAN. Children with achondroplasia had significantly smaller sagittal diameter (mean 16.2 ± 2.4 mm) compared to other groups (control 31.7 ± 2.4 mm, p < 0.0001; Muenke 31.7 ± 3.5 mm, p < 0.0001; and CSAN 23.1 ± 3.4 mm, p < 0.0001) and transverse diameters (mean 14.3 ± 1.8 mm) compared with other groups (control 26.5 ± 3.2 mm, p < 0.0001; Muenke 24.1 ± 2.6 mm, p < 0.0001; CSAN 19.1 ± 2.6 mm, p < 0.0001). This translated into a surface area which was 3.4 times smaller in the achondroplasia group compared with the control group. The median grade of the AIOS fusion achondroplasia group was 3.0 (IQR 3.0–5.0), which was significantly higher compared with the control group (1.0, IQR 1.0–1.0, p < 0.0001), Muenke group (1.0, IQR 1.0–1.0, p < 0.0001), and CSAN (2.0, IQR 1.0–2.0, p < 0.0002). Median PIOS fusion grade was also highest in the achondroplasia group (5.0, IQR 4.0–5.0) compared with control (1.0, IQR 1.0–1.0, p < 0.0001), Muenke (2.5, IQR 1.3–3.0, p < 0.0001), and CSAN (4.0, IQR 4.0–4.0, p = 0.2). Distinct bony opisthion spurs projecting into the foramen magnum were seen in achondroplasia patients but not others, resulting in characteristic crescent and cloverleaf shapes. Conclusion: Patients with AFMS stages 3 and 4 have significantly reduced FM diameters, with surface area 3.4 times smaller than age-matched controls. This is associated with premature fusion of the AIOS and PIOS in comparison with controls and other FGFR3-related conditions. The presence of thickened opisthion bony spurs contributes to stenosis in achondroplasia. Climate change is modifying plant communities and ecosystems around the world. Alpine ecosystems are of special concern on oceanic islands, due to their characteristic higher endemicity percentage, small area and undergoing severe climate change impact in the last few decades. During recent decades there has been increasing interest in the effects of climate change on biodiversity and a range of methods have been developed to assess species vulnerability. However, some new insights are necessary to obtain useful information for species management on oceanic islands. Here in the alpine area of two oceanic islands (Tenerife and La Palma) we evaluate the drivers that best explain the vulnerability of 63 endemic species along three scenarios, covering recent past to present and two future projections (2041–2060 and 2061–2080). The selected drivers were: loss of potential area, mismatch index between potential and occupied areas in different scenarios, and adaptive capacity constraints. We assess the influence of potential area size and whether the drivers of risk and the vulnerability for common, restricted and rare species are significantly different. Our results indicate that management must be widely distributed over the species, and not only focus on restricted species. Evidence for this was that drivers directly deriving from climate change showed no significant differences in their impact on the rarity groups identified. Vulnerability depends partially on the potential area size, showing a more complex picture where constraints on the adaptive capacity of the species have a strong enough influence to modify the effects of the characteristic drivers of climate change. An important task of the LHC is the investigation of the Higgs-boson sector. Of particular interest is the reconstruction of the Higgs potential, i.e. the measurement of the Higgs self-couplings. Based on previous analyses, within the 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) type I, we analyze several two-dimensional benchmark planes that are over large parts in agreement with all theoretical and experimental constraints. For these planes we evaluate di-Higgs production cross sections at the (HL-)LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV at next-to-leading order in the heavy top-quark limit with the code HPAIR. We investigate in particular the process g g → h h , with h being the Higgs boson discovered at the LHC with a mass of about 125 GeV . The top box diagram of the loop-mediated gluon fusion process into Higgs pairs interferes with the s-channel exchange of the two C P -even 2HDM Higgs bosons h and H. The latter two involve the triple Higgs couplings (THCs) λ hhh and λ hhH , respectively, possibly making them accessible at the HL-LHC. Depending on the size of the involved top-Yukawa and THCs as well as on the mass of H, the contribution of the s-channel H diagram can be dominating or be highly suppressed. We find regions of the allowed parameter space in which the di-Higgs production cross section can differ by many standard deviations from its SM prediction, indicating possible access to deviations in λ hhh from the SM value λ SM and/or contributions involving λ hhH . The sensitivity to the beyond-the-SM (BSM) THC λ hhH is further analyzed employing the m hh distributions. We demonstrate how a possible measurement of λ hhH depends on the various experimental uncertainties. Depending on the underlying parameter space, the HL-LHC may have the option not only to detect BSM THCs, but also to provide a first rough measurement of their sizes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Children living with achondroplasia are at an increased risk of developing neurological complications, which may be associated with acute and life-altering events. To remediate this risk, the timely acquisition of effective neuroimaging that can help to guide clinical management is essential. We propose imaging protocols and follow-up strategies for evaluating the neuroanatomy of these children and to effectively identify potential neurological complications, including compression at the cervicomedullary junction secondary to foramen magnum stenosis, spinal deformity and spinal canal stenosis. When compiling these recommendations, emphasis has been placed on reducing scan times and avoiding unnecessary radiation exposure. Standardized imaging protocols are important to ensure that clinically useful neuroimaging is performed in children living with achondroplasia and to ensure reproducibility in future clinical trials. The members of the European Society of Pediatric Radiology (ESPR) Neuroradiology Taskforce and European Society of Neuroradiology pediatric subcommittee, together with clinicians and surgeons with specific expertise in achondroplasia, wrote this opinion paper. Echocardiographic deformation curves provide detailed information on myocardial function. Deep neural networks (DNNs) may enable automated detection of disease features in deformation curves, and improve the clinical assessment of these curves. We aimed to investigate whether an explainable DNN-based pipeline can be used to detect and visualize disease features in echocardiographic deformation curves of phospholamban (PLN) p.Arg14del variant carriers. A DNN was trained to discriminate PLN variant carriers (n = 278) from control subjects (n = 621) using raw deformation curves obtained by 2D-speckle tracking in the longitudinal axis. A visualization technique was used to identify the parts of these curves that were used by the DNN for classification. The PLN variant carriers were clustered according to the output of the visualization technique. The DNN showed excellent discriminatory performance (C-statistic 0.93 [95% CI 0.87–0.97]). We identified four clusters with PLN-associated disease features in the deformation curves. Two clusters showed previously described features: apical post-systolic shortening and reduced systolic strain. The two other clusters revealed novel features, both reflecting delayed relaxation. Additionally, a fifth cluster was identified containing variant carriers without disease features in the deformation curves, who were classified as controls by the DNN. This latter cluster had a very benign disease course regarding development of ventricular arrhythmias. Applying an explainable DNN-based pipeline to myocardial deformation curves enables automated detection and visualization of disease features. In PLN variant carriers, we discovered novel disease features which may improve individual risk stratification. Applying this approach to other diseases will further expand our knowledge on disease-specific deformation patterns. Our objective was to evaluate the productive parameters of ewes and their lambs in relation to ewe age and to develop models for predicting lamb weight at birth and weaning in a tropical warm-climate pasture. Individual data were collected from 273 ewes and 273 lambs, between 2013 and 2021. During this period all animals were kept on pastures of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu All lambs in the experiments were supplemented in creep-feeding. A descriptive statistical analysis was performed using the PROC SUMMARY procedure in SAS (SAS University Edition, SAS Institute Inc. Cary, CA, USA). Pearson correlation coefficients between variables were estimated using the PROC CORR procedure in SAS (SAS University Edition, SAS Institute Inc. Cary, CA, USA). Model adjustments and variable selection were performed using PROC REG in SAS (SAS University Edition, SAS Institute Inc. Cary, CA, USA). The STEPWISE option and Mallow's C(p) were used to select the variables included in the equations. Outliers were identified by evaluating the studentized residuals based on the predicted values from the equations. Residual analysis was predicted by regression minus observed values and those that fell outside the range of -2.5 to 2.5 were removed. Several statistics were used to assess the predictability of the equations, including the coefficients of determination (r2) and mean standard error (RMSE). The average ewe age at lambing was 3.4 ± 1.7 years, with an average weight of 56.9 ± 8,9 kg and average body condition score (BCS) of 2,4 ± 0.8 points. The average ewe age at weaning was 51.1 ± 7.9, with average BCS of 1.8 ± 0.8 points. The average lamb at birthing was 3.9 ± 0.9 kg. The average lamb at weaning was 21.0 ± 4.9, with daily gain of 0.2 ± 0.1 kg/day and total gain of 17.1 ± 4.7 kg birth to weaning. The lamb produced by ewe at lambing was 5.3 ± 1.7 kg/ewe. The lamb weaned by ewe at weaning was 28.7 ± 10.8 kg/ewe. The ratios of lamb produced per ewe at birth and at weaning were 0.1 ± 0.03 and 0.6 ± 0.2, respectively. The lamb’s birth weight showed a positive linear relationship with the age of the ewe, increasing by 115 g per year of age. The regression equations adjusted for ewe age had maximum points ranging from 4.2 to 5.2, occurring at average age of 4,7 years. The other characteristics showed a quadratic tendency. This study evaluates parental grit's covariation with offspring grit and the moderating role of different parenting behaviors using an 11-country study of young adults between the ages of 18 and 35 (n = 20,008) and their parents (n = 5945). Results show that parental grit is associated with offspring's grit with moderation of parenting present across the models presented. The study also highlights the direct association of various parenting dimensions with grit, especially the positive relation of parental control. These results have important implications for understanding young people's grit development and learning mechanisms. Findings can serve as foundations for effective intervention programs and practices in this field designed to improve enthusiasm, interest, capacity for hard work, engagement, and motivation in the long run. Background : The awareness of cancer therapy–related adverse cardiac effects is fueled by recent literature on cardiotoxicity incidence and detection strategies. Although this influences the sense of urgency, in current practice, cardiotoxicity monitoring and treatment is not structurally performed. With this study, we aimed to evaluate current perspectives on cardio-oncology and to assess needs, ultimately to determine an agenda for improvements in current practice. Material and methods: A national multidisciplinary 36-question survey was conducted. The survey was developed by a multidisciplinary team, theoretically based on an implementation checklist and distributed by email, through cardiology and oncology societies as well as social media. Results: One hundred ninety professionals completed the survey, of which 66 were cardiologists, 66 radiation oncologists, and 58 medical oncologists and hematologists. Many professionals were unaware of their specialisms' cardio-oncology guidelines: 62.1% of cardiologists and 29.3% of the hematologists and medical oncologists respectively. Many cardiologists (N = 46; 69.7%), radiation oncologists (N = 45; 68.2%), and hematologists and medical oncologists (N = 38; 65.5%) expressed that they did not have sufficient knowledge to treat cardio-oncology patients and would either refer a patient or aspire to gain more knowledge on the topic. Conclusion: The field of cardio-oncology is advancing rapidly, with progress in stratification and detection strategies leading to the development of new guidelines and consensus statements. However, the application of these guidelines in current practice appears to be lagging. Professionals express a need for additional training and a practical guideline including risk stratification, monitoring, and treatment strategies. Health monitoring, rehabilitation, and fitness are just a few domains where human activity recognition can be applied. In this study, a deep learning approach has been proposed to recognise ambulation and fitness activities from data collected by five participants using smart insoles. Smart insoles, consisting of pressure and inertial sensors, allowed for seamless data collection while minimising user discomfort, laying the baseline for the development of a monitoring and/or rehabilitation system for everyday life. The key objective has been to enhance the deep learning model performance through several techniques, including data segmentation with overlapping technique (2 s with 50% overlap), signal down-sampling by averaging contiguous samples, and a cost-sensitive re-weighting strategy for the loss function for handling the imbalanced dataset. The proposed solution achieved an Accuracy and F1-Score of 98.56% and 98.57%, respectively. The Sitting activities obtained the highest degree of recognition, closely followed by the Spinning Bike class, but fitness activities were recognised at a higher rate than ambulation activities. A comparative analysis was carried out both to determine the impact that pre-processing had on the proposed core architecture and to compare the proposed solution with existing state-of-the-art solutions. The results, in addition to demonstrating how deep learning solutions outperformed those of shallow machine learning, showed that in our solution the use of data pre-processing increased performance by about 2%, optimising the handling of the imbalanced dataset and allowing a relatively simple network to outperform more complex networks, reducing the computational impact required for such applications. Congenital melanocytic naevus (CMN) syndrome, previously termed neurocutaneous melanosis, is a rare disease caused by postzygotic mosaic mutations occurring during embryogenesis in precursors of melanocytes. The severity of neurological manifestations in CMN patients is related to central nervous system abnormalities found at magnetic resonance imaging. The association between CMN and Dandy–Walker malformation (DWM) has been described in the literature, but recent advances in imaging and genetics lead to diagnostic criteria revision. Obligate brood parasites lay their eggs in nests of other species, with host parents bearing the cost of raising their offspring. These costs imposed on hosts select for the evolution of host defenses against parasitism at all stages of the reproductive cycle. The most effective defense is egg rejection at early stages of the breeding cycle, with later-stage defenses (nestling and fledgling discrimination) being less common. In this study, we tested whether the hoopoe (Upupa epops), a potential host of the great spotted cuckoo (Clamator glandarius) without egg rejection ability, presents defenses after the egg stage. We experimentally parasitized hoopoe nests with great spotted cuckoo nestlings creating mixed broods (with hoopoe and cuckoo nestlings) and broods with only cuckoo nestlings and measured parental feeding behavior and survival of nestlings and fledglings of both species. Cuckoo fledglings were fed fewer often than hoopoe fledglings in mixed broods, and adults approached more often to feed hoopoe fledglings than cuckoo fledglings. Consequently, the survival of cuckoo fledglings in both mixed and only-cuckoo-broods, was significantly lower than that of hoopoe fledglings. These results suggest that hoopoes would discriminate great spotted cuckoo fledglings, with or without direct comparison with their own fledglings. However, the survival of some cuckoos suggests that hoopoes have not reached highly efficient defenses so, other life history traits hindering parasitism by cuckoos may explain low parasitism rates and low levels of defenses in this species. Significance statement: Brood parasites lay their eggs in nests of other species, tricking hosts into raising their parasitic offspring. However, hosts may fight back impeding successful parasitism by developing defences at any of the stages of their breeding cycle. We investigated why the hoopoe is not parasitized by the great spotted cuckoo despite this potential host apparently does not show such anti-parasitic defenses. We found that hoopoes have evolved the less common host defense: discrimination of parasite fledglings, even in the absence of their own fledgling for comparison. There is worldwide concern about how climate change —which involves rising temperatures— may increase the risk of contracting and developing diseases, reducing the quality of life. This study provides new research that takes into account parameters such as land surface temperature (LST), surface urban heat island (SUHI), urban hotspot (UHS), air pollution (SO2, NO2, CO, O3 and aerosols), the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the normalized difference building index (NDBI) and the proportion of vegetation (PV) that allows evaluating environmental quality and establishes mitigation measures in future urban developments that could improve the quality of life of a given population. With the help of Sentinel 3 and 5P satellite images, we studied these variables in the context of Granada (Spain) during the year 2021 to assess how they may affect the risk of developing diseases (stomach, colorectal, lung, prostate and bladder cancer, dementia, cerebrovascular disease, liver disease and suicide). The results, corroborated by the statistical analysis using the Data Panel technique, indicate that the variables LST, SUHI and daytime UHS, NO2, SO2 and NDBI have important positive correlations above 99% (p value: 0.000) with an excess risk of developing these diseases. The objective was to evaluate the effect of the supplementation with natural antioxidants from Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil.) on the performance, carcass and meat characteristics, and fatty acid profile in meat and fat of Texel × Ile de France lambs kept in Brachiaria-grass pasture. Twenty lambs with a mean age of 90 days and 26.3 kg of BW were distributed in a completely randomized design in two treatments with 10 replicates/treatment: Control—protein-energy supplement based on corn and soybean meal (150 g/kg DM of crude protein) without the addition of natural antioxidant yerba mate and Yerba Mate – energy protein supplement with the addition of yerba mate (110 g/kg DM). There was no treatment effect on animal performance and carcass characteristics. The subcutaneous fat thickness was significantly higher for lambs treated without yerba mate. There was no effect of nutritional treatments on the oxidative markers of lamb meat. The muscle of the animals treated with yerba mate showed a higher concentration of unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids elaidic, linolenic, thymnodonic, docosadienoic, and ceorvonic. The fat of the animals treated with yerba mate showed a higher concentration of palmitoleic acid, linoelaidic acid, heneicosanoic acid, dihomo-γ-linolenic acid, and arachidonic acid. The concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids was significantly higher in meat and fat of lambs treated with yerba mate. Including yerba mate in the diet of lambs kept on Brachiaria pastures improves the lipid profile of polyunsaturated fatty acids in meat and fat, without altering the performance of the animals. Ecological risk assessment of chemicals focuses on the response of different taxa in isolation not taking ecological and evolutionary interplay in communities into account. Its consideration would, however, allow for an improved assessment by testing for implications within and across trophic levels and changes in the phenotypic and genotypic diversity within populations. We present a simple experimental system that can be used to evaluate the ecological and evolutionary responses to chemical exposure at microbial community levels. We exposed a microbial model system of the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila (predator) and the bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens (prey) to iron released from Magnetic Particles (MP-Fedis), which are Phosphorus (P) adsorbents used in lake restoration. Our results show that while the responses of predator single population size differed across concentrations of MP-Fedis and the responses of prey from communities differed also across concentration of MP-Fedis, the community responses (species ratio) were similar for the different MP-Fedis concentrations. Looking further at an evolutionary change in the bacterial preys' defence, we found that MP-Fedis drove different patterns and dynamics of defence evolution. Overall, our study shows how similar community dynamics mask changes at evolutionary levels that would be overlooked in the design of current risk assessment protocols where evolutionary approaches are not considered. Purpose: We reviewed the genotypes and the imaging appearances of cochleae in CHARGE patients from two large tertiary centres and analysed the observed cochlear anomalies, providing detailed anatomical description and a grading system. The goal was to gain insight into the spectrum of cochlear anomalies in CHARGE syndrome, and thus, in the role of the CHD7 gene in otic vesicle development. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed CT and/or MR imaging of CHARGE patients referred to our institutions between 2005 and 2022. Cochlear morphology was analysed and, when abnormal, divided into 3 groups in order of progressive severity. Other radiological findings in the temporal bone were also recorded. Comparison with the existing classification system of cochlear malformation was also attempted. Results: Cochlear morphology in our CHARGE cohort ranged from normal to extreme hypoplasia. The most common phenotype was cochlear hypoplasia in which the basal turn was relatively preserved, and the upper turns were underdeveloped. All patients in the cohort had absent or markedly hypoplastic semicircular canals and small, misshapen vestibules. Aside from a stenotic cochlear aperture (fossette) being associated with a hypoplastic or absent cochlear nerve, there was no consistent relationship between cochlear nerve status (normal, hypoplasia, or aplasia) and cochlear morphology. Conclusion: Cochlear morphology in CHARGE syndrome is variable. Whenever the cochlea was abnormal, it was almost invariably hypoplastic. This may shed light on the role of CHD7 in cochlear development. Understanding just how the increase in the Earth's Surface Temperature (LST) is related to alterations of the urban climate —Surface Urban Heat Island (SUHI) or Urban Hotspots (UHS)— and with the deterioration of cities´ environmental quality has become a great challenge. Societies worldwide seek actions that might break these trends and improve the quality of life of local inhabitants in the face of climate change. In this research, and with the help of Sentinel 3 satellite images (day and night), the space–time variability of the LST and the SUHI over the metropolitan areas of the capitals of Andalusia (Spain) during the year 2021 was studied to evaluate how these variables, together with the Land Use/Land Cover (LULC), may have influenced the variability of the UHS and the level of thermal comfort according to the Thermal Field Variance Index (UTFVI). As results, an important spatial variability of the LST, SUHI, UHS, and the different classes of UTFVI is reported. Biochar is a promising material used for multiple remediation approaches, mainly in polluted soils. Its properties can differ depending on feedstock and pyrolysis temperature. In this context, we tested the capacity of three biochar products made from corncob, pyrolyzed at different temperatures (350, 500, and 650 °C), to remediate a mining soil affected by high levels of Cu and As. We performed an exhaustive characterization of the biochar. We found that biochar showed a higher surface area with increasing pyrolysis temperature, whereas high molecular weight PAHs were detected in biochar produced at the maximum temperature, thus indicating potential ecotoxicological risks. After the application of biochar to the soil, Cu was partially immobilized, especially when using that obtained at 500 °C. This effect is attributed to the structure of this material and an increase in soil pH and organic matter content. Conversely, As was increased in the soluble fraction for all three types of biochar but in a proportion that lacks relevance. On the whole, given its lower PAH content, higher Cu immobilization ratio, and an almost negligible increase in As availability, biochar obtained at 500 °C outperformed the other two products with respect to soil recovery. Of note, data on Cu and As availability were doubled-checked using two extraction methodologies. The hypothesis tested is that the association of soybean grain and yerba mate as an antioxidant source can increase the concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) with lower oxidation of milk from lactating ewes reared in tropical pastures. Sixteen ewes were randomly distributed in a 2x2 factorial scheme (with or without yerba mate at 110 g / kg of dry matter (DM); with or without soybean grain at 210 g/kg of DM). Yerba mate intake reduced DM intake, and concentrations of ether extract (EE), protein, lactose, defatted dry extract, density, omega-3 concentrations, and the ratio between saturated/monounsaturated fatty acids (FA), but increased the concentration of monounsaturated FA and the sequestering power of free radicals by DPPH without altering the concentrations of conjugated dienes and the concentrations of substances reactive to thiobarbituric acid in milk. Supplementation with soybean grain decreased the birth weight of the lambs and increased the concentrations of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), PUFA, omega - 6, omega ratio - 6/omega – 3, and total blood cholesterol. The addition of yerba mate did not influence the oxidative profile of milk. Supplementation with soybean grain improved the FA profile of milk, increasing the concentrations of CLA and PUFA. The results suggest that the association of yerba mate and soybean grain helps to improve the fat quality of milk from ewes raised in tropical pastures, as shown by the enhanced antioxidant activity, although it does not help prevent oxidation of milk rich in PUFA. Biochar has attracted significantly growing attention due to its effectiveness in terms of both cost and environmental safety in removing trace metals from soil and water. Its metal sorption capacity depends on its properties, which are in turn governed by pyrolysis temperature and type of biomass. Therefore, this study examines the role of pyrolysis temperature and biomass in biochars sorption capacity of Pb2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+. Biochars produced by pyrolysis of maize (Zea mays L.) cobs at different temperatures were used to assess the effect of temperature, whereas evergreen oak (Quercus ilex L.) pyrolyzed at 500 °C was used to assess the effect of biomass. Sorption isotherms were constructed by batch method and compared with Langmuir and Freundlich models. Most of the sorption isotherms displayed irregular curves and not all of the isotherms fitted the models. Therefore, sorption distribution coefficients and metal removal percentages were used to determine sorption capacities biochars for studied metals. Accordingly, Quercus ilex L. was most effective in sorbing all studied metals, which indicates the role of biomass. The maize biochar pyrolyzed at 500 °C was most effective among maize cob biochars, which revealed the influence pyrolysis temperature. The concentrations of added sorption solutions also played significant role in sorption, and consequently biochar pyrolyzed 350 °C was least effective. The targeted metals also affected the sorption as they compete for sorption sites. Thus, their selective sequence was in the order of Pb2+ ˃ Cu2+ ˃ Zn2+. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The need to monitor the presence of cyanide (CN−) in water is necessary to minimize the risks to aquatic ecosystems and human health. In this paper, a paper-based analytical device (PAD) was fabricated by immobilizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on filter paper (FP) for the semi-quantitative colorimetric detection of CN− in water. The average diameter of the synthesized AgNPs was estimated to be around 26.23 ± 8.37 nm, with a characteristic optical absorption peak around 420 nm. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results confirmed the successful immobilization of AgNPs on the filter paper via direct immersion technique. The potential of the fabricated FP-AgNPs PAD as a colorimetric sensor for CN− was evaluated using water samples contaminated with various ions and CN− concentration. Here, a color change from yellow to colorless was instantly observed as the FP-AgNPs PAD was exposed to water samples containing CN−. Interestingly, no color change was observed for samples exposed to other analytes suggesting the good selectivity of the FP-AgNPs PAD. Ultraviolet–Visible spectroscopy results and digital image analysis revealed that the fabricated sensor can detect CN− with concentration down to 1.0 ppm. The colorimetric response was also obtained for real water samples spiked with CN−. The results stipulated in this work offer baseline information that can be used in developing highly selective and sensitive digital sensing devices for affordable, accessible, and fast water contaminant monitoring and other related applications. Congenital orbital teratomas are rare entities with few case reports detailing their prenatal and perinatal imaging features. We present the case of a congenital orbital teratoma initially detected as cystic lesion on prenatal ultrasound, with foetal and postnatal imaging showing evolution of characteristic MRI appearances. This study aims to evaluate the economic impact of poisoning by Brachiaria grass in lambs from birth to weaning (suckling) and from weaning to slaughter (finishing) different levels of energy protein supplementation (EPS). In addition, we estimated the economic efficiency of removing lambs from the pasture as a control measure to minimize the losses caused by Brachiaria grass poisoning. Seventy lambs were used in the suckling phase, distributed in two nutritional treatments (control and creep feeding). Hospitalization expenses were US$ 1580.80 for the control treatment and US$ 256.16 for the creep feeding treatment. In the finishing phase, 48 lambs were distributed in four nutritional treatments, which consisted of increasing levels of EPS (mineral salt, 0.8, 1.6 and 2.4% of LW). The largest difference in total revenue (US$) was observed between 2.4% of BW EPS and mineral salt (− 2300.28) treatments. Hospitalization expenses were similar between nutritional treatments, being higher in the treatment 1.6% of BW EPS (US$ 578.15). The biggest difference in gross income (US$) observed was between 2.4% of BW EPS and mineral salt (− 1439.43) treatments. The Brachiaria grass poisoning caused economic losses to the sheep farming system, due to the death of lambs, reduced weight gain and lower weights at weaning and in the finishing phase. Brachiaria grass poisoning caused economic damage to the production system. There were direct losses, with the death of the lambs without supplementation, in the suckling and finishing phases. The supplementation increases the performance and reduces the mortality. The fifth edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Tumours of the Central Nervous System (WHO CNS5) published in 2021 builds on the 2016 edition and incorporates output from the Consortium to Inform Molecular and Practical Approaches to CNS Tumour Taxonomy (cIMPACT-NOW). WHO CNS5 introduces fundamental changes to brain tumour classification through the introduction of new tumour families and types, especially in the paediatric population, and a revision of diagnostic criteria for some of the existing neoplasms. Neuroradiologists are central to brain tumour diagnostics, and it is therefore essential that they become familiar with the key updates. This review aims to summarise the most relevant updates for the neuroradiologist and, where available, discuss the known radiophenotypes of various new tumour types to allow for increased accuracy of language and diagnosis. Of particular importance, WHO CNS5 places greater emphasis on organising tumours by molecular type to reflect biology, as well as to allow for better planning of treatment. The principal updates in adult tumours concern the molecular definition of glioblastoma, restructuring of diffuse gliomas, and the introduction of several new tumour types. The updates to the paediatric classification are protean, ranging from the introduction of new types to establishing separate tumour families for paediatric-type gliomas. From the very beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, one of the very few common opinions was that to control the expansion of the virus as many as the possible test had to be done. Antigen tests, being affordable and easy and fast to use, represented a great opportunity to expand the testing capacities of many healthcare systems. However, in 2021 with the appearance of the new SARS-CoV-2 variants, variant tracking strategies had to be implemented, which often included needing a second test to determine the variant of the patients diagnosed with antigen tests or not taking these samples into consideration at all. Therefore, we proposed recovering the positive antigen test devices to include them in our routine variant tracking strategy. The recovered positive antigen test devices obtained from 1st April 2021 to 15the January 2022 were analysed following the variant tracking protocol in force. The results obtained were compared to the positive samples detected by RT-PCR which were processed for variant tracking during the same period. 21,304 samples were processed, 6297 from the recovered positive antigen devices and 15,007 from the standard nasopharyngeal swabs. Only 773 (3.63%) samples were no conclusive, 104 (1.65%) from the recovered antigen devices and 669 (4.46%) from the RT-PCR positive group. This difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01). In 2012, a new volunteer-based recording scheme for vascular plants was launched in the Netherlands. Its purpose is to track the changes in the number of occupied 1-km grid cells for as many native plant species as possible between survey rounds of 8 years. We did not prescribe a strict field protocol to minimize variation in observer effort, but instead chose to statistically correct for this variation with occupancy models. These models require replicated visits to a grid cell per season, which was implemented by having two independent observers survey grid cells and record all plant species observed. Now that a first survey round has ended (2012–2019), we evaluate our approach, i.e. we tested whether the scheme has the potential to produce proper trend estimates. The number of occupied grid cells in the first round was estimated per species, using an occupancy model with day of year, visit duration and observer experience as covariates for detection. The detection probability, which was 0.43 on average, strongly depended on visit duration and day of year. It was possible to estimate the number of occupied grid cells quite precisely for several hundreds of species, such that the statistical power is expected to be high enough to detect changes of 10% between survey rounds. For rare species, however, the power to detect changes is expected to be quite low. We conclude that the approach works well, but further improvements are suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Guillain-Barrè syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated neuropathy, possibly triggered by a recent infection or vaccination, and driven by an immune attack targeting the peripheral nervous system. GBS typically leads to ascending limb weakness, often with sensory and cranial nerve involvement 1–2 weeks after immune stimulation, but emergency and neurology physicians should be aware of its important clinical heterogeneity. In rare cases, bilateral facial nerve palsy can be the main clinical manifestation, as the case of the variant formerly known as bilateral facial weakness with paresthesias. An increasing number of case reports of GBS in patients receiving COVID-19 vaccination have been reported both during the pre-clinical phase and after large-scale authorities' approval. We report two cases of bifacial palsy with paresthesias, a rare variant of GBS, both occurring after the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine Vaxzevria™ (formerly COVID-19 vaccine AstraZeneca), showing a favorable outcome after high-dose immunoglobulin therapy, and discuss the literature of GBS post-COVID-19 vaccination. In this paper, we focus on Gossamer, a well-known ultralightweight authentication protocol, introduced in 2008. Our contributions are the following: we analyze the structure of the MixBits function, a key component of the protocol, and show that it does not realize a pseudorandom function, not even in a weak form; we show, by employing artificial intelligence techniques, that tags are distinguishable; finally, we study the performance of Gossamer and show that it does not provide a substantial saving, compared to a standard three-round mutual authentication protocol, implemented with lightweight primitives.
