Immense epidemiological studies have been indicated about adverse effects of the welding fumes on the health of the welders, especially respiratory problems and other physiological disorders. The different types of welding mechanisms produce aerosols/fumes that contain different metals including chromium (Cr) and manganese (Mn). In the present study, the welders of two age groups (adolescents and adults) were selected; simultaneously the age-matched adolescents and adults belong to nonindustrial area as referents/control subjects. Biological samples (scalp hair) were collected from welders and referents, along with analyzed for Cr and Mn by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometer, prior to acid digestion. To evaluate the occupational exposure on the health of the workers, the clinical features and biochemical parameters of selected population (exposed and non-exposed age-matched groups) were also carried out. The resulted data indicated that the concentrations of Mn and Cr were significantly higher in scalp hair samples of welders as compared to referent subjects (p < 0.01), verifying the absorption/exposure of both metals produced in welding fumes. The high prevalence of anemia and stomach disorder was observed in adolescent than adult welding workers. The incidence of asthma and related symptoms was elevated in adult welders than in younger boys. The neurological problems were particularly observed in aged welders > 50 years, might be due to long time exposure of welding fumes contains different toxicant especially Mn in ill ventilation system of workshops. There is some evidence that natural levels of lithium (Li) in drinking water may have a protective effect on neurological health. In present study, we evaluate the Li levels in drinking water of different origin and bottled mineral water. To evaluate the association between lithium levels in drinking water with human health, the scalp hair samples of male subjects (25-45 years) consumed drinking water obtained from ground water (GW), municipal treated water (MTW) and bottled mineral water (BMW) from rural and urban areas of Sindh, Pakistan were selected. The water samples were pre-concentrated five to tenfold at 60 °C using temperature-controlled electric hot plate. While scalp hair samples were oxidized by acid in a microwave oven, prior to determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The Li content in different types of drinking water, GW, MTW and BMW was found in the range of 5.12-22.6, 4.2-16.7 and 0.0-16.3 µg/L, respectively. It was observed that Li concentration in the scalp hair samples of adult males consuming ground water was found to be higher, ranged as 292-393 μg/kg, than those who are drinking municipal treated and bottle mineral water (212-268 and 145-208 μg/kg), respectively. The use of poultry waste (without proper treatment) as a potential fertilizer in agricultural soils have great concern to environment and human health, due to high levels of organic and inorganic toxicants, including heavy metals. Thus, the aim of this study was to monitor and assess bio-accumulation of heavy metals, cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) contained in soil amended with poultry waste (SPW) and compared with controls. The physico-chemical parameters and heavy metal concentration in control soil (CS), poultry waste (PW), and SPW samples was also determined. The comparison study between the test vegetables and controls showed that the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn in edible parts of chili pepper were found to be 0.057, 38.0, 61.9, 1.02, and 51.1 mg kg, respectively, while the levels of Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn were 0.14, 28.7, 138, 3.67, and 64.7 mg kg, respectively, in coriander grown on SPW. The uptakes of heavy metals in test vegetables were found to be 35.7 to 95.6 % higher as compared with control vegetables. Soil-to-vegetable transfer factor values for all heavy metals in test samples were higher than control samples ( p < 0.05). There is compelling evidence in support of interaction between calcium (Ca) and lead (Pb) in thyroid disorders. The aim of present study was to compare the level of Ca and Pb with thyroid hormones such as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), and free thyroxin (FT4) in serum samples of hyperthyroid (HPRT) and hypothyroid (HPOT) patients of both genders. For comparative purpose, age-matched (25-50 years) subjects having no thyroid disorders were selected as referents/controls. The serum samples were acid-digested prior to analysis by atomic absorption spectrometry. The validity and accuracy of the methodology were checked by certified reference materials. The resulted data indicates that the mean values of Ca in serum samples of HPRT patients were significantly higher than those of referent subjects ( p < 0.01), while reverse pattern was observed in the case of HPOT patients. The level of Pb was higher in the serum samples of both types of thyroid patients, but difference was significant in case of HPOT patients as compare to referent subjects ( p < 0.01). A negative correlation was observed between serum Ca levels and TSH of HPRT patients (− r = 0.37-0.39, p < 0.01), while FT3 and FT4 have positive correlation ( r = 0.49-0.52 and r = 0.46-0.47), p values <0.01. The Pb in serum had positive correlation with TSH ( r = 0.48-0.51, p < 0.005), while negative correlation was observed for FT3 and FT4 (− r = 0.55-0.56, 0.5-0.54, p < 0.05) in HPRT patients. The aim of present study was to compare the level of manganese (Mn) with thyroid functions, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), and free thyroxin (FT4) of females having hyper- (HPRT) and hypothyroid (HPOT) disorder. For comparative study, females of the same age group (16-30 years) having no thyroid disorders were selected as referents. The serum samples were acid digested prior to analysis by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. The validity and accuracy of the methodology was checked by a certified sample. The resulted data indicated that the mean values of Mn in serum samples of females have hyperthyroidism was significantly higher than referent subjects ( p < 0.01), while lower values of Mn was observed in serum samples of hypothyroid patients. The mean values of FT3 and FT4 were found to be lower while TSH higher is in HPRT patients than age-matched healthy control females ( p = <0.01).
