This dataset covers national and subnational non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI) to combat the COVID-19 pandemic in the Americas. Prior to the development of a vaccine, NPI were governments' primary tools to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Variation in subnational responses to COVID-19 is high and is salient for health outcomes. This dataset captures governments' dynamic, varied NPI to combat COVID-19 for 80% of Latin America's population from each country's first case through December 2021. These daily data encompass all national and subnational units in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru. The dataset includes individual and aggregate indices of nine NPI: school closures, work suspensions, public event cancellations, public transport suspensions, information campaigns, local travel restrictions, international travel controls, stay-at-home orders, and restrictions on the size of gatherings. We also collected data on mask mandates as a separate indicator. Local country-teams drew from multiple data sources, resulting in high-quality, reliable data. Left ventricular ejection function (LVEF) is not reliable in identifying subtle systolic dysfunction. Speckle Tracking (ST) plays a promising role and hemodynamic forces (HDFs) are emerging as marker of LV function. The role of LV myocardial deformation and HDFs was investigated in a cohort of patients with aortic stenosis (AS) and normal LVEF. Two hundred fifty three patients (median age 79 years, IQR 73 – 83 years) with mild (n = 87), moderate (n =77) and severe AS (n =89) were retrospectively enrolled. 2D echocardiographic global longitudinal strain (GLS), circumferential strain (GCS) and HDFs were determined. The worsening of AS was associated with raising inappropriate LV mass (p < 0.001) and declined LVEF, despite being in the normal range (p < 0.001). ST and HDFs parameters declined as the AS became severe (p<0.0001, for all). When patients were grouped based on the median of LV endocardial GLS value (> -19,9%) and LV systolic longitudinal force (LVsysLF) value (< 12,49), patients with impaired ST and lower HDFs components had increased incidence of aortic valve replacement (AVR) and worse survival (p <0.024 and p <0.037, respectively). Among ST and HDFs parameters, only LVsysLF was independently associated with AVR and all causes mortality on multivariable Cox regression analysis (HR 0.94; 95% CI 0.89-0.99; p= 0.012). Reduced values of LVsysLF were associated with AVR and reduced survival in AS patients. This paper addresses a multi-attribute variant of the vehicle routing problem which encompasses a heterogeneous fixed fleet, flexible time windows and stochastic travel times. The objective is to minimize the sum of the transportation and the service costs. The former comprises the vehicle fixed costs and route variable costs, and the latter corresponds to the penalty costs for violating customer time windows. The problem is formulated as a two-stage stochastic mixed-integer program with recourse and solved by a granular local search matheuristic. The stochastic travel times are approximated by a finite set of scenarios generated by Burr type XII distribution. Extensive computational tests are performed on 216 benchmark instances, and the advantages of both flexible windows and stochastic travel times are stressed. The experiments show that, compared to a state-of-art mathematical programming solver, the developed matheuristic found better solutions in 81% of the instances within shorter computational times. The proposed solution method also far outperformed an alternative decomposition algorithm based on the augmented Lagrangian relaxation. Furthermore, the flexible time windows yielded overall cost savings for 68% of the instances compared to the solutions obtained for hard time window problems. Finally, explicitly modeling the stochastic travel times provided 66% more feasible solutions than the adoption of a deterministic model with the random parameters fixed at their expected values. Background: During the walk along the streets, older adults are exposed to various visual stimuli that can affect their gait in a harmful or beneficial way. Aims: To evaluate gait strategies during different situations with and without visual stimulation in older adults to identify the influence of the visual stimulus on these gait parameters. Methods: A total of 200 older adults were divided into 4 groups according to age range between 60 and 102 years. Gait was evaluated in the following situations: (1) habitual gait (HG); (2) gait with the visual stimulation (GVS) provided by a pedestrian traffic light, and (3) GVS associated with a cognitive task (GVS-C). The GAITRite Platinum equipment was used to assess gait variables. Results: Comparison of GVS and HG revealed that the visual stimulus influences the gait parameters and promotes a gait speed increase. However, to increase their gait speed, older adults aged 60–89 years used strategies of increased step length and cadence, whereas subjects older than 90 years used only strategies of increased cadence. In addition, comparison of GVS and GVS-C revealed a decrease in gait speed in all age ranges when the cognitive task was added, although this reduction was more pronounced in subjects older than 70 years. Conclusion: Visual stimulus influences the gait parameters in older adults and the strategy used is different depending on their age, a fact that shows that traffic light may be an interesting strategy to improve the gait performance during physical therapy. Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a pivotal health problem worldwide. The identification of subjects at increased risk of SCD is crucial for the accurate selection of candidates for implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) therapy. Current strategies for arrhythmic stratification largely rely on left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF), mostly measured by echocardiography, and New York Heart Association functional status for heart failure with reduced EF. For specific diseases, such as hypertrophic and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, some risk scores have been proposed; however, these scores take into account some parameters that are a partial reflection of the global arrhythmic risk and show a suboptimal accuracy. Thanks to a more comprehensive evaluation, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) provides insights into the heart muscle (the so-called tissue characterization) identifying cardiac fibrosis as an arrhythmic substrate. Combining sequences before and after administration of contrast media and mapping techniques, CMR is able to characterize the myocardial tissue composition, shedding light on both intracellular and extracellular alterations. Over time, late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) emerged as solid prognostic marker, strongly associated with major arrhythmic events regardless of LVEF, adding incremental value over current strategy in ischemic heart disease and non-ischemic cardiomyopathies. The evidence on a potential prognostic role of mapping imaging is promising. However, mapping techniques require further investigation and standardization. The association between left ventricular (LV) myocardial deformation and hemodynamic forces is still mostly unexplored. The normative values and the effects of demographic and technical factors on hemodynamic forces are not known. The authors studied the association between LV myocardial deformation and hemodynamic forces in a large cohort of healthy volunteers. One-hundred seventy-six consecutive subjects (age range, 16–82; 51% women), with no cardiovascular risk factors or any relevant diseases, were enrolled. All subjects underwent an echo-Doppler examination. Both 2D global myocardial and endocardial longitudinal strain (GLS), circumferential strain (GCS), and the hemodynamic forces were measured with new software that enabled to calculate all these values and parameters from the three apical views. Higher LV mass index and larger LV volumes were found in males compared to females (85 ± 17 vs 74 ± 15 g/m2 and 127 ± 28 vs 85 ± 18 ml, p < 0.0001 respectively) while no differences of the mean values of endocardial and myocardial GLS and of myocardial GCS were found (p = ns) and higher endocardial GCS in women (− 30.6 ± 4.2 vs − 31.8 ± 3.7; p = 0.05). LV longitudinal force, LV systolic longitudinal force and LV impulse were higher in men (16.2 ± 5.3 vs 13.2 ± 3.6; 25.1 ± 7.9 vs 19.4 ± 5.6 and 20.4 ± 7 vs 16.6 ± 5.2, p < 0.0001, respectively). A weak but statistically significant decline with age (p < 0.0001) was also found for these force parameters. This new integrated approach could differentiate normality from pathology by providing average deformation values and hemodynamic forces parameters, differentiated by age and gender. Adult patients with simple congenital heart disease (sACHD) represent an expanding population vulnerable to atrial arrhythmias (AA). CHA2DS2-VASc score estimates thromboembolic risk in non-valvular atrial fibrillation patients. We investigated the prognostic role of CHA2DS2-VASc score in a non-selected sACHD population regardless of cardiac rhythm. Between November 2009 and June 2018, 427 sACHD patients (377 in sinus rhythm, 50 in AA) were consecutively referred to our ACHD service. Cardiovascular hospitalization and/or all-cause death were considered as composite primary end-point. Patients were divided into group A with CHA2DS2-VASc score = 0 or 1 point, and group B with a score greater than 1 point. Group B included 197 patients (46%) who were older with larger prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors than group A. During a mean follow-up of 70 months (IQR 40–93), primary end-point occurred in 94 patients (22%): 72 (37%) in group B and 22 (10%, p < 0.001) in group A. Rate of death for all causes was also significantly higher in the group B than A (22% vs 2%, respectively, p < 0.001). Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that CHA2DS2-VASc score was independently related to the primary end-point (HR 1.84 [1.22–2.77], p = 0.004) together with retrospective AA, stroke/TIA/peripheral thromboembolism and diabetes. Furthermore, CHA2DS2-VASc score independently predicted primary end-point in the large subgroup of 377 patients with sinus rhythm (HR 2.79 [1.54–5.07], p = 0.01). This article proposes extensions of exact and heuristic dynamic programming algorithms for the traveling salesman problem with flexible time windows, which are a limited enlargement of the generally referred to as hard time windows. The service of a customer can be started before or after the hard time window at a penalty cost. The addressed problem thus requires the determination of a sequence of customers and their respective service start times in order to minimize the sum of traveling cost with earliness and lateness cost. Due to their renewable and sustainable nature, biodiesel blends boost studies predicting their stability during storage. Besides chemical degradation, biodiesel is more susceptible to biodegradation due to its raw composition. The aim of this work was to evaluate the deteriogenic potential (growth and degradation) of Pseudallescheria boydii and Meyerozyma guilliermondii in degrading pure diesel (B0), pure biodiesel (B100), and a B10 blend in mineral medium during storage. The biodeterioration susceptibility at different fuel ratios and in BH minimal mineral medium were evaluated. The biomass measurements of P. boydii during 45 days indicated higher biomass production in the B10 blend. The growth curve of M. guilliermondii showed similar growth in B10 and B100. Although there was no significant production of biosurfactant, lipase production was detected in the tributyrin agar medium of both microorganisms. The main compounds identified in the aqueous phase by GC-MS were alcohols, esters, acids, sulfur, ketones, and phenols. The results showed that P. boydii grew at the expense of fuels, degrading biodiesel esters, and diesel hydrocarbons. M. guilliermondii grew in B100 and B10; however, degradation was not detected. The CKD-EPI equation is more accurate than the MDRD equation in the general population. We performed this study to establish whether chronic kidney disease (CKD) is commonly recognized by clinicians and whether the CKD-EPI equation improves prognosis estimation in patients with chronic cardiovascular disease (CVD). We analyzed data on 12394 CVD patients consecutively examined at the Cardiovascular Center of Trieste (Italy) between November 2009 and October 2013. The outcomes were all-cause death and a composite outcome of death/hospitalization for CV events (D+cvH). CKD-EPI formula reclassified 1786 (14.4 %) patients between KDIGO categories compared to the MDRD: 2.3 % (n = 280) placed in a lower risk and 12.1 % (n = 1506) into a higher risk group. CKD, defined as eGFR-CKD-EPI formula <60 ml/min, was present in 3083 patients (24.9 %) but not recognized by clinicians in 1946 (63.1 % of patients with CKD). The lack of recognition of CKD was inversely proportional to the KDIGO class for both equations. There were 986 deaths and 2726 D+cvH during 24 months follow-up. The incidence of death and D+cvH was about twice as high in patients with unrecognized CKD than in those with normal renal function (31 % vs. 17.1 %, aHR: 1.35, 95 % CI: 1.15 to 1.60), even in those patients with eGFR-MDRD >60 but eGFR-CKD-EPI formula <60 (31.1 % vs 17.1 %, p < 0.001). CKD-EPI equation provides more accurate risk stratification than MDRD equation in patients with CVD. Patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) have high cardiovascular event rates. The additional effect of MetS on left ventricular (LV) systolic function in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is unknown. We studied the relation between MetS and LV systolic function in T2DM patients without coronary artery disease (CAD). Clinical and echocardiographic data from 331 T2DM patients were analyzed. Prevalence of MetS was assessed based on NCEP ATPIII definition. Stress-corrected midwall shortening (sc-MS) and mitral annular peak systolic velocity (S') were analyzed as indexes of circumferential and longitudinal shortening, respectively. Sc-MS was impaired if <89 %, S' if <8.5 cm/s (10th percentile of healthy controls). MetS was diagnosed in 172 patients. Sc-MS and S' were similar in T2DM patients with and without MetS (91 ± 14 vs 92 ± 15 %; 9.8 ± 2.0 vs 9.5 ± 2.1 cm/s, respectively; p = ns) but significantly reduced comparing to controls (102 ± 11 % and 10.8 cm/s; p < 0.0001). Impairment of sc-MS and S' were detected in 37 vs 40 % and in 29 vs 32 % of T2DM patients with and without MetS ( p = ns), respectively. LV systolic function measured as sc-MS and S' is frequently impaired in T2DM patients without CAD; however, the coexistence of MetS is not associated with more severe LV systolic dysfunction. Abstract  Cryptococcosis is a major opportunistic mycosis which has meningitis as its most frequent clinical presentation and can be fatal in the absence of antifungal therapy. The aetiological agents are Cryptococcus neoformans, which affects mainly immunocompromised subjects, and C. gattii, the aetiologic agent for cryptococcosis in healthy individuals. A recent outbreak of cryptococcosis on Vancouver Island, Canada, raised the level of concern about the epidemiology of this disease. In Brazil, between 1980 and 2002, six per cent of AIDS patients had cryptococcosis in course at the time of diagnosis. To identify the profile of cryptococcal meningitis patients in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil, a retroactive study was realized using data from patients registered at Laboratório Central de Saúde Pública IPB-LACEN/RS from 2000 to 2005. Cryptococcus neoformans, a major pathogen in immunocompromised patients, is a ubiquitous free-living fungus that can be isolated from soils, avian excreta and plant material. To further study potential saprophytic sources of this yeast in the Southern Brazilian State Rio Grande do Sul, we analyzed fecal samples from 59 species of captive birds kept in cages at a local Zoological Garden, belonging to 12 different orders. Thirty-eight environmental isolates of C. neoformans were obtained only from Psittaciformes (Psittacidae, Cacatuidae and Psittacula). Their variety and serotype were determined, and the genetic structure of the isolates was analyzed by use of the simple repetitive microsatellite specific primer M13 and the minisatellite specific primer (GACA)4 as single primers in the PCR. The varieties were confirmed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Thirty-three isolates (87%) were from the var. grubii, serotype A, molecular type VNI and five (13%) were Cryptococcus gattii, serotype B, molecular type VGI. All the isolates were mating type α. Isolates were screened for some potential virulence factors. The river Odra, which rises in the Czech Republic and disgorges into the Baltic, suffered an extreme flood in July 1997 which was responsible for the loss of 55 lives and over a billion dollars worth of damage in southern Poland. The return period of the flood is variously estimated between 250 and 1000 years. The paper describes the hydrological and hydraulic studies undertaken for a flood reservoir (storage capacity is approximately 180,000,000 m3) to be constructed on the River Odra just upstream the ancient town of Raciborz, on the border between Poland and Czech Republic. These studies included the hydrodynamic modelling of a 220 km stretch of the river down to the city of Wroclaw where most of the damage occurred, flood damage analysis with and without the proposed reservoir, sensitivity analysis of operating rules for Nysa reservoirs and improvement of flood control capacity of existing channels and polders. Cost-benefits analysis, environmental impact assessments and resettlement plans, in addition to the engineering studies of the dam itself, were also carried out during the project stage but have not been included in the present paper.
