Virtual reality (VR) may be useful during rehabilitation of service members with persistent vestibular impairment following concussion. Thirty-eight active duty US military service members with persistent balance impairment resulting from concussion were randomized into three groups [Conventional Vestibular Physical Therapy (CVPT, n = 13), Virtual Reality Vestibular Physical Therapy (VRVPT, n = 12), and Hybrid Virtual Reality and Conventional Vestibular Physical Therapy (HybridVPT, n = 13)] and were treated twice weekly for 6 weeks. Changes in clinical measures such as Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC) Scale, Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), Functional Gait Assessment (FGA), and Sensory Organization Test (SOT) were assessed from pre-, mid-, and post-treatment scores. A significant main time effect was observed demonstrating clinical improvement over time (ABC: p <.001, η2p =.54; DHI: p <.001, η2p =.57; FGA: p <.001, η2p =.74; SOT: p <.001, η2p =.35). Both CVPT and HybridVPT groups demonstrated significant improvements in patient-reported confidence and function earlier in the treatment course (p <.005). FGA significantly and incrementally improved at each assessment time point in all treatment groups. The SOT significantly improved early in treatment in the CVPT group only and pre-to-post-treatment in the CVPT and VRVPT groups only. The HybridVPT group did not demonstrate any significant improvement with time in the instrumented SOT measure. In the comparison of pre-to-post-effects of VRVPT and HybridVPT effects compared to CVPT, there was no clear superiority or inferiority observed in either of the experimental treatments. This preliminary work shows initial efficacy of using VR-based therapy for concussed individuals allowing future work to personalize treatment that may improve adherence and engagement to therapy. Spatial orientation is based on a complex cortical network with input from multiple sensory systems. It is affected by training, sex and age as well as cultural and psychological factors, resulting in different individual skill levels in healthy subjects. Various neurological disorders can lead to different patterns or specific deficits of spatial orientation and navigation. Accordingly, numerous tests have been proposed to assess these abilities. Here, we compare the results of (1) a validated questionnaire-based self-estimate of orientation/navigation ability (Santa Barbara Sense of Direction Scale, SBSODS) and (2) a validated pen-and-paper two-dimensional perspective test (Perspective Taking Spatial Orientation Test, SOT) with (3) a newly developed test of finger-arm pointing performance in a 3D real-world (3D-RWPT) paradigm using a recently established pointing device. A heterogeneous group of 121 participants (mean age 56.5 ± 17.7 years, 52 females), including 16 healthy volunteers and 105 patients with different vestibular, ocular motor and degenerative brain disorders, was included in this study. A high correlation was found between 2D perspective task and 3D pointing along the horizontal (azimuth) but not along the vertical (polar) plane. Self-estimated navigation ability (SBSODS) could not reliably predict actual performance in either 2D- or 3D-tests. Clinical assessment of spatial orientation and memory should therefore include measurements of actual performance, based on a 2D pen-and-paper test or a 3D pointing task, rather than memory-based questionnaires, since solely relying on the patient's history of self-estimated navigation ability results in misjudgments. The 3D finger-arm pointing test (3D-RWPT) reveals additional information on vertical (polar) spatial performance which goes undetected in conventional 2D pen-and-paper tests. Diseases or age-specific changes of spatial orientation in the vertical plane should not be clinically neglected. The major aim of this pilot study was to compare the practicability and capability of the three tests but not yet to prove their use for differential diagnosis. Purpose: To evaluate the vestibulospinal reflex and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in patients with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) using posturography and the video head impulse test (vHIT). Methods: Sixty-five patients with CSOM and 65 healthy participants as controls were included. Patients with CSOM were instructed to complete the dizziness handicap inventory (DHI). All participants underwent otoscopy, pure-tone audiometry, posturography sensory organization test (SOT), and vHIT. Results: Patients with CSOM exhibited a high prevalence of dizziness. The CSOM group had poor SOT vestibular scores compared to the control group. Patients with CSOM had worse sways in the antero-posterior and mediolateral planes. The CSOM group was divided into two subgroups according to the type of hearing loss. SOT vestibular scores were significantly poorer in the mixed hearing loss group than those in the conductive hearing loss group. We found a positive correlation between disease duration and poor SOT vestibular scores. Moreover, poor SOT vestibular scores correlated with high DHI scores. We found abnormalities in the vHIT results in the CSOM group in the form of low VOR gain and corrective saccades. Conclusion: Our study provides clinical evidence of dizziness, poor postural control, and VOR abnormalities in patients with CSOM. Based on the spinor Boltzmann equation (SBE) formalism, we present a theory of temperature-dependent thermal spin–orbit torque for a system in the presence of Rashba spin–orbit interaction. Under the local equilibrium assumption, we can expand the distribution function of spinor Boltzmann equation around local equilibrium distribution; then, the spin diffusion equation can be derived from SBE, where the spin transfer torque, spin orbit torque as well as thermal spin–orbit torque can be naturally obtained. It is shown that this thermal spin–orbit torque originates from the temperature gradient of local equilibrium distribution function, which is explicit and straightforward than previous works. Finally, we illustrate them by an example of spin-polarized transport through a ferromagnet with Rashba spin–orbit coupling, in which those torques driven whatever by temperature gradient or bias are manifested quantitatively. When maintaining postural stability temporally under increased sensory conflict, a more rigid response is used where the available degrees of freedom are essentially frozen. The current study investigated if such a strategy is also utilized during more dynamic situations of postural control as is the case with walking. This study attempted to answer this question by using the Locomotor Sensory Organization Test (LSOT). This apparatus incorporates SOT inspired perturbations of the visual and the somatosensory system. Ten healthy young adults performed the six conditions of the traditional SOT and the corresponding six conditions on the LSOT. The temporal structure of sway variability was evaluated from all conditions. The results showed that in the anterior posterior direction somatosensory input is crucial for postural control for both walking and standing; visual input also had an effect but was not as prominent as the somatosensory input. In the medial lateral direction and with respect to walking, visual input has a much larger effect than somatosensory input. This is possibly due to the added contributions by peripheral vision during walking; in standing such contributions may not be as significant for postural control. In sum, as sensory conflict increases more rigid and regular sway patterns are found during standing confirming the previous results presented in the literature, however the opposite was the case with walking where more exploratory and adaptive movement patterns are present. Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is often required to manage rising intracranial pressure after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Syndrome of the trephine (SoT) is a reversible neurologic condition that often occurs following DC as a result of the unrepaired skull. The purpose of the present study is to characterize neurological impairment following TBI in rats with an unrepaired craniectomy versus rats with a closed cranium. Long Evans male rats received a controlled cortical impact (CCI) over the caudal forelimb area (CFA) of the motor cortex. Immediately after CCI, rats received either a hemi-craniectomy (TBI Open Skull Group) or an immediate acrylic cranioplasty restoring cranial anatomy (TBI Closed Skull Group). Motor performance was assessed on a skilled reaching task on post-CCI weeks 1—4, 8, 12, and 16. Three weeks after the CCI injury, the TBI Closed Skull Group demonstrated improved motor performance compared to TBI Open Skull Group. The TBI Closed Skull Group continued to perform better than the TBI Open Skull Group throughout weeks 4, 8, 12 and 16. The protracted recovery of CFA motor performance demonstrated in rats with unrepaired skulls following TBI suggests this model may be beneficial for testing new therapeutic approaches to prevent SoT. Hematological diseases after solid organ transplant (SOT) are an emerging issue as the number of long-term SOT survivors increases. Expertise in managing patients requiring allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) after SOT from independent donors is needed; however, clinical reports of HSCT after SOT are limited, and the feasibility and risk are not well understood. In particular, HSCT in prior lung transplant recipients is thought to be complicated as the lung is immunologically distinct and is constantly exposed to the surrounding environment. Herein, we describe a case of successful HSCT in a patient with myelodysplastic syndromes who had previously received a lung transplant from a deceased donor for bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome. Reports about cases of HSCT after lung transplant are quite rare; thus, we discuss the mechanisms of immune tolerance through the clinical course of our case. This case suggests that HSCT after SOT can be considered a therapeutic option in cases where the transplanted organ is functionally retained and the hematological disease is in remission. Spin Orbit Torque Magnetic RAM (SOT-MRAM) is emerging as a promising memory technology owing to its high endurance, reliability and speed. A critical factor for its success is the development of materials that exhibit efficient conversion of charge current to spin current, characterized by their spin Hall efficiency. In this work, it is experimentally demonstrated that the spin Hall efficiency of the industrially relevant ultra-thin Ta can be enhanced by more than 25× when a monolayer (ML) WSe2 is inserted as an underlayer. The enhancement is attributed to spin absorption at the Ta/WSe2 interface, suggested by harmonic Hall measurements. The presented hybrid spin Hall stack with a 2D WSe2 underlayer has a total body thickness of less than 2 nm and exhibits greatly enhanced spin Hall efficiency, which makes this hybrid a promising candidate for energy efficient SOT-MRAM. Purpose: The aim of this study is to critically examine the multidisciplinary approach to abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) in the solid organ transplant (SOT) population at our institution, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, using a modified component separation technique (CST).Methods: A retrospective review of AWR utilizing modified open CST with biologic mesh in SOT patients was performed from January 2010 to June 2018. Patient demographics, comorbidities, operative details, complications, and outcomes were recorded. Descriptive statistics, logistic and linear regression analyses were performed to appraise outcomes.Results: Thirty-five patients were included; mean age was 53 years. Patient demographics and comorbidities were: 82.9% male, 45.7% history of tobacco use, and 28.6% diabetes. Fifty-one percent had undergone prior hernia repair. Transplant types were: kidney (9), liver (16), liver/kidney (1), small bowel (7), multivisceral (2). All were on an immunosuppressive regimen at time of surgery; 22.9% included steroids. Average defect size was 361 cm2. Additional soft tissue procedures were performed in 65.7% (n = 23) of patients. Median time to healing was 29.0 days. Complication rate was 31.4% (n = 11); six patients required reoperation within 90 days. Recurrence rate was 5.7% (n = 2) at mean of follow up of 3.0 years. Additional soft tissue procedures were statistically significant for healing time (p = 0.037). Steroid use was statistically significant for reoperation within 90 days (OR = 12.500; 95% CI 1.694-92.250); however, steroid use was not significant after correction for confounders.Conclusion: Modified open CST with biologic mesh is a safe, efficacious approach to complex AWR in the SOT population with recurrence rates comparable to the general population. Bronchiolitis is a common respiratory illness in early childhood, often leading to hospitalization and associated healthcare costs. Low flow 100% oxygen through nasal prongs is the standard therapy for infants with bronchiolitis and hypoxemia. Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) or invasive ventilation is used in case of progressive respiratory failure. High flow heated and humidified oxygen therapy with delivery of an air-oxygen mixture up to 2 L/min/kg body weight via nasal prongs (referred to as high flow nasal cannula or HFNC) is a newer method for respiratory support. Initial data from retrospective studies were promising but should be interpreted with caution. A limited number of prospective randomized controlled trials (RCT) have now compared HFNC with either standard oxygen therapy (SOT) or nCPAP. In this review, we critically summarize the data from these RCTs with the aim to provide advice on how to position HFNC in clinical practice.Conclusion: HFNC is a safe mode of respiratory support that can be positioned between SOT and nCPAP as rescue therapy for children not adequately supported by SOT. It does not seem to shorten the duration of oxygen need nor the duration of hospital admission.What is Known:• HFNC is being used increasingly in the context of infant bronchiolitis. Background: Although patient environment is a factor to consider when planning a vestibular rehabilitation program, there are no studies correlating this factor to outcomes of balance assessment. Aim: To evaluate whether there are differences in objective evaluation of balance in elderly patients at risk of falls according to the environment in which they live (urban or rural) and their lifestyle (considering cardiovascular risk factors). Methods: Cross-sectional study of a sample of 139 elderly patients with high risk of falls assessed with objective outcome measures: Computer Dynamic Posturography (CDP), and the modified Timed Up-and-Go (TUG) test; and subjective outcome measures: Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) and short Falls Efficacy Scale-International (short FES-I). Rural or urban environment was defined according to administrative and legal criteria. Results: Elderly patients at risk of fall living in rural environment show better composite results in SOT with better scores in Condition 6 and fewer falls during the CDP. They also require fewer steps to perform the TUG test. Discussion: The present study provides evidence that patient environment has an influence in balance. The pharmaceuticals bisoprolol (BIS), sotalol (SOT), and ranitidine (RAN) are among the most consumed pharmaceuticals worldwide and are frequently detected in different aquatic ecosystems. However, very few ecotoxicity data are available in the literature for them. To help fill these data gaps, toxicity tests with the algae Raphidocelis subcapitata, the macrophyte Lemna minor, the cnidarian Hydra attenuata, the crustacean Daphnia similis, and the fish Danio rerio were performed for assessing the ecotoxicity of these pharmaceuticals. Standard, as well as non-standard endpoint, was evaluated, including the locomotor behavior of D. rerio larvae. Results obtained for SOT and RAN showed that acute adverse effects are not expected to occur on aquatic organisms at the concentrations at which these pharmaceuticals are usually found in fresh surface waters. On the other hand, BIS was classified as hazardous to the environment in the acute III category. Locomotor behavior of D. rerio larvae was not affected by BIS and RAN. A disturbance on the total swimming distance at the dark cycle was observed only for larvae exposed to the highest test concentration of 500 mg L−1 of SOT. D. similis reproduction was affected by BIS with an EC10 of 3.6 (0.1–34.0) mg L−1. A risk quotient (RQ) of 0.04 was calculated for BIS in fresh surface water, considering a worst-case scenario. Introduction: We investigated a signal of solid organ transplant (SOT) rejection after immunisation with (AS03) A/H1N1 2009 pandemic influenza vaccines.Methods: Potential immunological mechanisms were reviewed and quantitative analyses were conducted. The feasibility of pharmacoepidemiological studies was explored.Results: Overall results, including data from a pharmacoepidemiological study, support the safety of adjuvanted (AS03) pandemic influenza vaccination in SOT recipients. The regulatory commitment to evaluate the signal through a stepwise investigation was closed in 2014.Conclusion: Lessons learned highlight the importance of investigating plausible biological mechanisms between vaccines and potentially associated adverse outcomes, and the importance of selecting appropriate study settings and designs for safety signal investigations. Out-of-plane spin polarization σz has attracted increasing interests of researchers recently, due to its potential in high-density and low-power spintronic devices. Noncollinear antiferromagnet (AFM), which has unique 120° triangular spin configuration, has been discovered to possess σz. However, the physical origin of σz in noncollinear AFM is still not clear, and the external magnetic field-free switching of perpendicular magnetic layer using the corresponding σz has not been reported yet. Here, we use the cluster magnetic octupole in antiperovskite AFM Mn3SnN to demonstrate the generation of σz. σz is induced by the precession of carrier spins when currents flow through the cluster magnetic octupole, which also relies on the direction of the cluster magnetic octupole in conjunction with the applied current. With the aid of σz, current induced spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching of adjacent perpendicular ferromagnet is realized without external magnetic field. Our findings present a new perspective to the generation of out-of-plane spin polarizations via noncollinear AFM spin structure, and provide a potential path to realize ultrafast high-density applications. The electrical control of antiferromagnetic moments is a key technological goal of antiferromagnet-based spintronics, which promises favourable device characteristics such as ultrafast operation and high-density integration as compared to conventional ferromagnet-based devices. To date, the manipulation of antiferromagnetic moments by electric current has been demonstrated in epitaxial antiferromagnets with broken inversion symmetry or antiferromagnets interfaced with a heavy metal, in which spin-orbit torque (SOT) drives the antiferromagnetic domain wall. Here, we report current-induced manipulation of the exchange bias in IrMn/NiFe bilayers without a heavy metal. We show that the direction of the exchange bias is gradually modulated up to ±22 degrees by an in-plane current, which is independent of the NiFe thickness. This suggests that spin currents arising in the IrMn layer exert SOTs on uncompensated antiferromagnetic moments at the interface which then rotate the antiferromagnetic moments. Furthermore, the memristive features are preserved in sub-micron devices, facilitating nanoscale multi-level antiferromagnetic spintronic devices. Antiferromagnets have great promise for spin-based information processing, offering both high operation speed, and an immunity to stray fields. To realize the very objective of spintronics, namely the development of ultra-high frequency and energy-efficient electronic devices, an ultrafast and scalable approach to switch magnetic bits is required. Magnetization switching with spin currents generated by the spin–orbit interaction at ferromagnetic/non-magnetic interfaces is one of such scalable approaches, where the ultimate switching speed is limited by the Larmor precession frequency. Understanding the magnetization precession dynamics induced by spin–orbit torques (SOTs) is therefore of great importance. Here we demonstrate generation of ultrashort SOT pulses that excite Larmor precession at an epitaxial Fe/GaAs interface by converting femtosecond laser pulses into high-amplitude current pulses in an electrically biased p-i-n photodiode. We control the polarity, amplitude, and duration of the current pulses and, most importantly, also their propagation direction with respect to the crystal orientation. This article is a study of risk assessment of trees with hollows, cavities and fruiting bodies for the improvement of the management and protection of urban trees growing along pedestrian routes. 317 trees were examined using TRAQ risk classes, VTA and ISA BMP methodology, Roloff's vitality classification, and sonic tomography (SoT) during the spring and summer of 2021. The collected data was analysed using the Kruskal–Wallis H-test, the Dunn multiple comparison test, the pairwise comparison of proportions with Holm correction, the U-Manna-Whitney test, and the Fisher exact test. The analysed trees grow alongside public footpaths and footways in central Zakopane, Poland. The study results indicate that tree trunk hollows are judged to have no adverse effects on a tree's vitality when assessed using visual methods and are deemed to have a limited effect on vitality estimated with SoT. Though most high and moderate-risk trees, according to SoT (88% and 80%, respectively), had hollows, such trees were a small fraction of all 171 trees with hollows, cavities and/or fruiting bodies, 2.3% and 8.8%, respectively. Therefore, the decision to remove a tree should be based on advice from a professional arborist, supported by sonic tomography (SoT) or similar objective methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose of the Review: Invasive fungal infections (IFI) produce significant morbidity and mortality in solid organ transplant recipients, although their overall incidence is poorly defined. This review aims to provide insight into recent developments in the epidemiology of IFI in these patients. Recent Findings: Invasive candidiasis is the most common IFI encountered particularly those with intraabdominal transplants. In contrast, invasive aspergillosis is commonly seen in lung transplants. Voriconazole therapy has certainly increased the survival in invasive aspergillosis. The risk of disseminated cryptococcosis occurs more commonly in liver transplant than other organ transplants. Histoplasmosis usually arises from reactivation in the recipient but may also be donor derived. A higher rate of dissemination occurs in solid organ transplants with coccidioidomycosis. Of interest, climate change may enhance the risk of emerging fungal infection in transplant recipients. Summary: A better understanding of the incidence and risk factors for IFI is necessary. Nuclear magnetic resonance has experienced great advances in developing and translating hyperpolarization methods into procedures for fundamental and clinical studies. Here, we propose the use of a wide-bore NMR for large-scale (volume- and concentration-wise) production of hyperpolarized media using parahydrogen-induced polarization. We discuss the benefits of radio frequency-induced parahydrogen spin order transfer, we show that 100% polarization is theoretically expected for homogeneous B0 and B1 magnetic fields for a three-spin system. Moreover, we estimated that the efficiency of spin order transfer is not significantly reduced when the B1 inhomogeneity is below ± 5%; recommendations for the sample size and RF coils are also given. With the latest breakthrough in the high-yield synthesis of 1-13C-vinyl pyruvate and its deuterated isotopologues, the high-field PHIP-SAH will gain increased attention. Microalgae are considered to be efficient bio-resources for biofuels and bio-based chemicals because they generally have high productivity. The filamentous cyanobacterium Arthrospira ( Spirulina) platensis has been widely used for food, feed, and nutrient supplements and is usually cultivated in open ponds. In order to extend the surface area for growing this alga, we designed a pilot-scale floating closed culture system for cultivating A. platensis on open water and compared the growth and quality of the alga harvested at both subtropical and temperate regions. The biomass productivity of A. platensis NIES-39 was ca. 9 g dry biomass m day in summer at Awaji Island (warm temperature region) and ca. 10 and 6 g dry biomass m day in autumn and winter, respectively, at Ishigaki Island, (subtropical region) in Japan. If seawater can be used for culture media, culture cost can be reduced; therefore, we examined the influence of seawater salt concentrations on the growth of A. platensis NIES-39. Growth rates of A. platensis NIES-39 in diluted seawater with enrichment of 2.5 g L NaNO3, 0.01 g L FeSO·7HO, and 0.08 g L NaEDTA were considerably lower than SOT medium, but the biomass productivity (dry weight) was comparable to SOT medium. This is explained by the heavier cell weight of the alga grown in modified seawater media compared to the alga grown in SOT medium. Furthermore, A. platensis grown in modified seawater-based medium exhibited self-flocculation and had more loosely coiled trichomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic insulators (MIs) attract tremendous interest for spintronic applications due to low Gilbert damping and the absence of Ohmic loss. Spin-orbit torques (SOTs) on MIs are more intriguing than magnetic metals since SOTs cannot be transferred to MIs through direct injection of electron spins. Understanding of SOTs on MIs remains elusive, especially how SOTs scale with the MI film thickness. Here, we observe the critical role of dimensionality on the SOT efficiency by studying the MI layer thickness-dependent SOT efficiency in tungsten/ thulium iron garnet (W/TmIG) bilayers. We show that the TmIG thin film evolves from twodimensional to three-dimensional magnetic phase transitions as the thickness increases. We report the significant enhancement of the measured SOT efficiency as the TmIG thickness increases, which is attributed to the increase of the magnetic moment density. We demonstrate the current-induced SOT switching in the W/TmIG bilayers with a TmIG thickness up to 15 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ferromagnetic resonance excited by the ac magnetic field is investigated theoretically in the three-terminal magnetic tunnel junction with a tilted anisotropy. By the linearization method, we obtain the resonance curves adjusted by the microwave frequency and the dc magnetic field. Additionally, we show the dependence of position and linewidth of the resonance peak on the spin-transfer torque and spin-orbit one. It is also found that the height, position, and linewidth of resonance peaks can be controlled by the tilted angle of pinned layer. We have studied current induced magnetization switching in W/CoFeB/MgO based three terminal magnetic tunnel junctions. The switching driven by spin—orbit torque (SOT) is evaluated in the so-called type-Y structure, in which the magnetic easy-axis of the CoFeB layer lies in the film plane and is orthogonal to the current flow. The effective spin Hall angle estimated from the bias field dependence of critical current (Ic) is ~ 0.07. The field and current dependence of the switching probability are studied. The field and DC current induced switching can be described using a model based on thermally assisted magnetization switching. In contrast, the 50 ns long pulse current dependence of the switching probability shows significant deviation from the model, even if contribution from the field-like torque is included. The deviation is particularly evident when the threshold switching current is larger. These results show that conventional thermally assisted magnetization switching model cannot be used to describe SOT induced switching using short current pulses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Whole body vibration (WBV) applications have been used in recent years to increase muscle strength, power, and postural control in healthy and various disease populations. This study aims to investigate the effects of WBV on postural control in patients with ataxia. Twenty-four patients were randomly allocated to two groups. In the first group, whole body vibration and exercise therapy (WBV + E) were applied together for the first 8 weeks; after 1 week washout, only exercise program (OE) was applied for the second 8 weeks. In the second group, the OE program was applied first followed by the WBV + E program. Outcome measures were Sensory Organization Test (SOT), Adaptation Test (ADT), Limits of Stability Test (LOS), International Classification Ataxia Ratio Scale (ICARS), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Timed Up and Go Test with cognitive task (TUG-C). Twenty patients (mean age ± SD, 34.00 ± 9.16 years) completed the study. The scores of SOT, ICARS, and BBS improved significantly after both OE and WBV + E program (p < 0.05). Improvements in the WBV + E program were higher (p < 0.05). The scores of ADT, TUG-C, and three parameters of LOS improved significantly after WBV + E (p < 0.05), while there was no significant change after OE (p > 0.05). This study demonstrated that exercise programs supported by WBV can play an important role in the improvement of all components of postural control in patients with ataxia. The Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) onboard Hinode aims to obtain vector magnetic fields on the Sun through precise spectropolarimetry of solar spectral lines with a spatial resolution of 0.2 – 0.3 arcsec. A photometric accuracy of 10−3 is achieved and, after the polarization calibration, any artificial polarization from crosstalk among Stokes parameters is required to be suppressed below the level of the statistical noise over the SOT’s field of view. This goal was achieved by the highly optimized design of the SOT as a polarimeter, extensive analyses and testing of optical elements, and an end-to-end calibration test of the entire system. In this study the effect of a pseudorandom binaural bipolar Galvanic stimulus generated by a sum of nonharmonically related sine waves on postural control was functionally assessed using computerized dynamic posturography (CDP), and the results compared to vestibulopathic patient populations and astronauts exposed to microgravity. The standardized CDP test battery comprised six sensory organization tests (SOTs) that combined three visual conditions (eyes open, eyes closed, and sway-referenced vision) with two proprioceptive conditions (fixed and sway-referenced support surfaces). Subjects (12) performed 18 randomized trials (three trials of each of the six SOTs) as a baseline, repeated the 18 trials with Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS), and then performed a post-GVS baseline. A 10 min rest period was inserted between each test battery. Anterioposterior postural sway increased significantly and was in the abnormal range (fifth percentile) during GVS for SOTs where visual input was compromised (sway-referenced surround) or absent. Postural stability returned to baseline when GVS was removed. An analysis of sensory input scores (somatosensory, visual, and vestibular) demonstrated the specificity of GVS in distorting vestibular input to postural control. The SOT scores observed in astronauts on landing day did not differ significantly to that generated by GVS in our normal subjects. GVS also induced a similar pattern of instability on CDP as profound bilateral vestibular loss, although not as severe. We consider a class of stochastic optimal transport, SOT for short, with given two endpoint marginals in the case where a cost function exhibits at most quadratic growth. We first study the upper and lower estimates, the short-time asymptotics, the zero-noise limits, and the explosion rate as time goes to infinity of SOT. We also show that the value function of SOT is equal to zero or infinity in the case where a cost function exhibits less than linear growth. As a by-product, we characterize the finiteness of the value function of SOT by that of the Monge–Kantorovich problem. As an application, we show the existence of a continuous semimartingale, with given initial and terminal distributions, of which the drift vector is rth integrable for r ∈ [ 1 , 2) . Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) for management of patients with persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD) utilizing subjective and objectives outcome measures and to study the effect of degree of both anxiety and depression in patients on the response of vestibular rehabilitation therapy. Methods: Thirty-three PPPD patients participated in this study. Selection of patients was based on the diagnostic criteria for PPPD stated by Barany society in the International Classification of Vestibular Disorders (2017). Every patient was subjected to history taking, anxiety and depression assessment, Arabic version of Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), and sensory organization test (SOT). All patients received vestibular rehabilitations therapy. Assessment of VRT outcome was conducted after 6 weeks of VRT. Results: The mean patients' age was 40.9 ± 16.3 years, and nearly equal gender distribution. Vestibular migraine was the most precipitating condition (24.2%) in patients with PPPD. (39.4%) of patients had abnormal scores of anxiety and depression tests, all patients had from moderate to severe degrees of handicap caused by dizziness as measured by DHI, most of patients had abnormal findings in all conditions of SOT. After vestibular rehabilitation therapy, DHI and SOT scores showed significant improvement after VRT. More improvement was found among the group with no anxiety and depression. Conclusion: VRT were effective in improving balance abnormalities in patients with PPPD evidenced by subjectively by DHI scores and objectively by SOT results. Inspired by origami shape, two origami tubes are obtained through the arrangement of single-origami-cell structures (SOSs). Under quasi-static compression load, the specific energy absorption (SEA) value of same direction origami tube (SOT) is 13.46% higher than that of reverse origami tube (ROT). ROT shows the deformation mode of compression rotation, and SOT is layer by layer crushing. Various two-, three-, and four-layer origami structures are proposed through the combination of origami tubes and connecting plates, and their energy absorption efficiency is significantly higher than that of origami tubes. These origami structures exhibit stable deformation modes, mainly axial compression, torsion, and mixed deformation modes. The deformation mode of origami structures with four ROTs (4R) is similar to Fried Dough Twists. Regarding two-layer structures, origami structures consisting of reverse SOTs (RSOTs) and SOTs have significantly higher SEA values than those composed of ROTs and SOTs as well as ROTs and RSOTs. In addition, the compression performance of two-layer origami structures is significantly better than that of three- and four-layer origami structures. The SEA value of two-layer origami structure with two RSOTs and two SOTs (2RS2S) is higher than that of three-layer origami structure with four A cells (4A) and four-layer origami structure with one C cell and three D cells (1C3D) 68.05% and 64.48%, respectively. Single object tracking (SOT) is a fundamental problem in computer vision, with a wide range of applications, including autonomous driving, augmented reality, and robot navigation. The robustness of SOT faces two main challenges: tiny target and fast motion. These challenges are especially manifested in videos captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), where the target is usually far away from the camera and often with significant motion relative to the camera. To evaluate the robustness of SOT methods, we propose BioDrone—the first bionic drone-based visual benchmark for SOT. Unlike existing UAV datasets, BioDrone features videos captured from a flapping-wing UAV system with a major camera shake due to its aerodynamics. BioDrone hence highlights the tracking of tiny targets with drastic changes between consecutive frames, providing a new robust vision benchmark for SOT. To date, BioDrone offers the largest UAV-based SOT benchmark with high-quality fine-grained manual annotations and automatically generates frame-level labels, designed for robust vision analyses. Leveraging our proposed BioDrone, we conduct a systematic evaluation of existing SOT methods, comparing the performance of 20 representative models and studying novel means of optimizing a SOTA method (KeepTrack Mayer et al. in: Proceedings of the IEEE/CVF international conference on computer vision, pp. 13444–13454, 2021) for robust SOT. Our evaluation leads to new baselines and insights for robust SOT. Prediction of river water quality indicators (RWQIs) using artificial intelligence (AI)–based hybrid soft computing modeling techniques could provide essential predictions required for efficient river health planning and management. The study described the development of a novel AI-based relative weighted ensemble (AIRWE) hybrid model for predicting critical RWQIs, i.e., biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total coliform (TC). The study involved comprehensive water quality (WQ) monitoring from 30 locations along the Damodar River to establish the baseline data and delineate the WQ. The representative input features showing a strong association with BOD and TC were identified using Spearman's rank-coupled orthogonal linear transformation (SOT). The relative weighted ensemble (RWE) method was applied to determine the relative weights for base learners in the AIRWE model. The statistical analysis of the developed model revealed that it was most efficient and accurate for predicting BOD (R2, 0.97; RMSE, 0.06; MAE, 0.04) and TC (R2, 0.98; RMSE, 0.06; MAE, 0.05) over the traditional techniques. The tstat (BOD 0.02 and TC 0.47) was lesser than tcrit (1.672), confirming its unbiased predictions. The SOT technique removed the data noise and multicollinearity, whereas RWE curtailed the individual model's limitations and predicted more reliable results. The model resulted 97% accuracy with high precision (96%) in classifying the river water quality for various end uses. Yttrium iron garnet, a material possessing ultralow magnetic damping and extraordinarily long magnon diffusion length, is the most widely studied magnetic insulator in spintronics and magnonics. Field-free electrical control of perpendicular yttrium iron garnet magnetization with considerable efficiency is highly desired for excellent device performance. Here, we demonstrate such an accomplishment with a collinear spin current, whose spin polarization and propagation direction are both perpendicular to the interface. Remarkably, the field-free magnetization switching is achieved not only with a heavy-metal-free material, Permalloy, but also with a higher efficiency as compared with a typical heavy metal, Pt. Combined with the direct and inverse effect measurements, we ascribe the collinear spin current to the anomalous spin Hall effect in Permalloy. Our findings provide a new insight into spin current generation in Permalloy and open an avenue in spintronic devices. Lithium-ion batteries are becoming more popular due to their superior performance like high power density, long lifespan, broad operating range of temperatures, quick charging capabilities, and low self-discharge. The implementation of a Battery Management System (BMS) is crucial in order to guarantee the secure and optimal functioning of electric vehicle batteries. BMS monitors, controls, and maintains the health and performance of rechargeable batteries by monitoring the State of Charge (SoC), State of Health (SoH), and State of Temperature (SoT). SoC quantifies the amount of energy stored in a battery at a certain moment, and it is employed to approximate the remaining distance that may be covered. SoH describe the overall health or state of a rechargeable battery. It reveals how well a battery performs in comparison to its original state. SoT estimation keeps the battery temperature within a safe range, allowing it to reach a higher age and safety, which is critical for battery reliability. In this paper SoC, SoH, SoT estimation models for a lithium-ion battery have been developed using an improved EP-based R110-BLSTM approach. The Emperor Penguin based Residual Network-110 incorporated Bidirectional Long-Short Term Memory (EP-based R110-BLSTM) is ideal for estimating SoC, SoH, and SoT and features great accuracy, a quick estimation speed, and strong generalization capabilities. However, Extreme Learning Machine performance is heavily reliant on proper feature extraction. In order to enhance estimate performance by extracting the best features, Simulated-Annealing-based Golden Eagle optimization is utilized. Electric vehicle drive cycles are used to test the model's resilience to temperature changes. MATLAB 2018b software is used in the execution of this research. The results demonstrate that the proposed model performs better in terms of accuracy and has lower SoC, SoH, and SoT error rates than existing models. When The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique was published in 1959, authors William Russell and Rex Burch had a modest goal: to make researchers think about what they were doing in the laboratory -- and to do it more humanely. Sixty years later, their groundbreaking book was celebrated for inspiring a revolution in science and launching a new field: The 3Rs of alternatives to animal experimentation. On November 22, 2019, some pioneering and leading scientists and researchers in the field gathered at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore for the 60 Years of the 3Rs Symposium: Lessons Learned and the Road Ahead. The event was sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT), the Foundation for Chemistry Research and Initiatives, the Alternative Research & Development Foundation (ARDF), the American Cleaning Institute (ACI), the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), the Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS), John "Jack" R. Fowle III, and the Society of Toxicology (SoT). Fourteen presentations shared the history behind the groundbreaking publication, international efforts to achieve its aims, stumbling blocks to progress, as well as remarkable achievements. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) powder was synthesized through a precipitation method using waste cockle shell as a calcium source. HAp powder had a single phase of Ca5(PO4)3OH with a Ca/P ratio of 1.77. The crystals were rod-like, 80–110 nm long, and 20–30 nm wide. HAp ceramics sintered below 1350 °C in air resulted in ceramics with a stable HAp phase. The formation of β-tricalcium phosphate impaired the flexural strength of the specimen. The microhardness increased with sintering temperature due to the modification of density and porosity. The chemical solubility in acetic acid was related to density, porosity, and grain size. HAp ceramic sintered at 1250 °C provided appropriate properties for medical and dental applications. This ceramic had a grain size of 1.44 ± 0.37 µm, a density of 2.85 ± 0.01 g/cm3, a microhardness of 4.17 ± 2.37 GPa, a porosity of 10.3 ± 0.71%, a flexural strength of 46.13 ± 4.53 MPa, and a chemical solubility of 2.64 ± 0.10%. A long-standing goal of CMOS-based logic devices is to meet the needs of key markets, including ultralow-power operation and high operation speed, along with the continuing miniaturization of the architecture. However, despite significant progress in their development, conventional CMOS-based devices still suffer from drawbacks such as introducing large unintended leakage currents and volatile behavior. Thus, reconfigurable logic gates based on magnetic domain (MD) have emerged as a highly promising option because they offer fast operation speeds, nonvolatility, and diverse logic functions in a single-device configuration. Here, we address multiple reconfigurable MD logic gates in a single two-channel Hall bar device by varying the voltage-driven read-current directions and selecting a non-inverting or inverting comparator in W/CoFeB/MgO/Ta stacks. The non-volatile MD switching behavior induced by spin–orbit torque significantly affects our logic gate functions, which are not necessarily synchronized to a single clock. By adapting MD switching by spin-orbit torque and anomalous Hall effect voltage outputs, we identified eight reconfigurable logic gates, including AND, NAND, NOR, OR, INH, Converse INH, Converse IMP, and IMP, in a single device. We propose two new topic modeling methods for sequential documents based on hybrid inter-document topic dependency. Topic modeling for sequential documents is the basis of many attractive applications such as emerging topic clustering and novel topic detection. For these tasks, most of the existing models introduce inter-document dependencies between topic distributions. However, in a real situation, adjacent emerging topics are often intertwined and mixed with outliers. These single-dependency based models have difficulties in handling the topic evolution in such multi-topic and outlier mixed sequential documents. To solve this problem, our first method considers three kinds of topic dependencies for each document to handle its probabilities of belonging to a fading topic, an emerging topic, or an independent topic. Secondly, we extend our first method by considering fine-grained dependencies in a given context for more complex topic evolution sequences. Our experiments conducted on six standard datasets on topic modeling show that our proposals outperform state-of-the-art models in terms of the accuracy of topic modeling, the quality of topic clustering, and the effectiveness of outlier detection. The separability and the entanglement (that is, inseparability) of the composite quantum states play important roles in quantum information theory. Mathematically, a quantum state is a trace-class positive operator with trace one acting on a complex separable Hilbert space. In this paper, in more general frame, the notion of separability for quantum states is generalized to bounded positive operators acting on tensor product of Hilbert spaces. However, not like the quantum state case, there are different kinds of separability for positive operators with different operator topologies. Four types of such separability are discussed; several criteria such as the finite rank entanglement witness criterion, the positive elementary operator criterion and PPT criterion to detect the separability of the positive operators are established; some methods to construct separable positive operators by operator matrices are provided. Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) occur after solid organ transplantation (SOT) or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) and are frequently associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Because of the complex immune setup in PTLD patients, the tumor microenvironment (TME) is of particular interest to understand PTLD pathogenesis and elucidate predictive factors and possible treatment options. We present a comparative study of clinicopathological features of 48 PTLD after HCT (n = 26) or SOT (n = 22), including non-destructive (n = 6), polymorphic (n = 23), and monomorphic (n = 18) PTLD and classic Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 1). EBV was positive in 35 cases (73%). A detailed examination of the TME with image analysis-based quantification in 22 cases revealed an inflammatory TME despite underlying immunosuppression and significant differences in its density and composition depending on type of transplant, PTLD subtypes, and EBV status. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) expressing CD163 (p = 0.0022) and Mannose (p = 0.0016) were enriched in PTLD after HCT. Double stains also showed differences in macrophage polarization, with more frequent M1 polarization after HCT (p = 0.0321). Higher counts for TAMs (CD163 (p = 0.0008) and cMaf (p = 0.0035)) as well as in the T cell compartment (Granzyme B (p = 0.0028), CD8 (p = 0.01), and for PD-L1 (p = 0.0305)) were observed depending on EBV status. In conclusion, despite the presence of immunosuppression, PTLD predominantly contains an inflammatory TME characterized by mostly M1-polarized macrophages and cytotoxic T cells. Status post HCT, EBV positivity, and polymorphic subtype are associated with an actively inflamed TME, indicating a specific response of the immune system. People living with HIV should be considered candidates for solid-organ transplantation (SOT). However, managing HIV-infected patients undergoing SOT represents a major challenge due to the potential drug-drug interactions between antiretroviral drugs and immunosuppressive agents, particularly when resorting to antiretroviral drugs that require pharmacokinetic enhancers. We report three cases of cobicistat-tacrolimus co-administration, two of which also include the co-administration of mTOR inhibitors, in HIV-positive patients undergoing SOT (2 kidney and 1 liver recipient). Current-induced spin-orbit torques (SOTs) can cause an obvious manipulation of magnetization in a heavy metal/ferromagnetic metal bilayer. We report here the peculiarities of field-like SOT by a planar Hall effect (PHE) measurement for a number of stripe samples with various widths (w), consisting of a thermally oxidized Si sub./NiFe/Pt. The separation of interfacial spin-orbit effective field, bulk spin-orbit effective field, and Oersted field was performed by using the longitudinal and transverse PHE configurations. The interfacial effective field is much larger and plays a dominant role than the bulk one in the films. All the effective fields follow the 1/w dependence and obey the linear relationship with the current density. Furthermore, both the interfacial and bulk SOT coefficients remain constant and are independence of Hall-bar-width. The dominant interfacial spin-orbit effective field in the NiFe/Pt bilayers suggests the necessity of further analysis of interfacial effect on the current-induced manipulation of magnetization. Purpose: Solid organ (SOT) and allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell (HSCT) transplant recipients have elevated risks of de novo or secondary cancer. We explored risk factors hereof. Methods: Among SOT and HSCT between January 2004 and December 2014, standardised incidence ratio (SIR) of de novo/secondary cancer compared with the Danish population was determined and risk factors were identified using Poisson regression. Results: During a median of 3.4 (IQR 1.3–6.4) and 2.6 (0.8–5.4) person-years (PY) after SOT and HSCT, a total of 212/1656 (13%) and 75/992 (8%) persons developed cancer; SIR 3.61 (3.0–4.3) and 2.2 (1.6–3.0), resp.). SIR correlated with younger age and was highest for skin and haematological cancers for both types of transplantation. Within the cohort, cancer was associated with older age (adjusted incidence rate ratio > 50 vs ≤ 19 years, among SOT and HSCT: 9.4 (3.4–25.7) and 25.4 (5.1–126.0), resp.) and current elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) (≥ 10 vs < 10 mg/L: 2.5 (1.8–3.4) and 2.3 (1.4–3.9), resp.), but neither with prior cancer nor type of immunosuppressants. Conclusion: Rates of de novo or secondary cancers are elevated in both SOT and HSCT compared with the general population and mainly for skin and haematological cancers. Background: During the last two decades, there has been a worldwide increase in frequency and severity of infections with Clostridium difficile (CDI). Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients receiving immunosuppressing medications are especially at risk. Methods: We collected data from immunocompromised pediatric patients, including kidney and liver transplant recipients, at our tertiary pediatric care center in Germany. For this, we performed a retrospective review of institutional databases and analyzed data from all children who underwent diagnostic tests for CDI in a 3-year study period. Results: A total of 797 diagnostic tests in 343 patients were performed. We found 104 infection episodes in 69 patients (42% female, ages 12 days–20 years). Children after SOT accounted for 20% of all detected CDI patients in our series. Median time of CDI onset after transplantation was 588 days. Overall antibiotic exposure was identified as the major risk factor, particularly in immunocompromised children after SOT (exposure in > 95% of all cases). Conclusions: The occurrence of CDI in the pediatric SOT population contributes to a greater length of stay and higher hospital charges. However, only very few severe complications from CDI were observed in our cohort. Including an avatar in the array in a spatial perspective-taking test improves performance, but it is not clear why. Different aspects of an avatar, including its directional nature, its agency (perceived ability for action), and its interactivity, may all influence perspective-taking performance. Experiment 1 examined how performance was influenced by a social directional cue (an avatar) and an abstract directional cue (an arrow). Participants performed best in the avatar condition and no better in the arrow condition than in a control condition. These results suggest that directionality of the cue alone is not sufficient to facilitate performance on this task. Experiment 2 compared an avatar to a concrete directional cue that was grounded in everyday experience interacting with objects, but was non-agentive (a chair). There was no significant difference between the avatar and the chair conditions, which both outperformed the control condition. Participants in both experiments and all conditions primarily reported utilizing mental simulation strategies that involved imagining themselves in the array of objects. The results suggest that grounding the task in everyday interactions with people or objects facilitates this mental simulation process and more generally enhances performance on perspective-taking tasks. Pediatric kidney transplant (KT) candidates should be fully immunized according to routine childhood schedules using age-appropriate guidelines. Unfortunately, vaccination rates in KT candidates remain suboptimal. With the exception of influenza vaccine, vaccination after transplantation should be delayed 3-6 months to maximize immunogenicity. While most vaccinations in the KT recipient are administered by primary care physicians, there are specific schedule alterations in the cases of influenza, hepatitis B, pneumococcal, and meningococcal vaccinations; consequently, these vaccines are usually administered by transplant physicians. This article will focus on those deviations from the normal vaccine schedule important in the care of pediatric KT recipients. The article will also review human papillomavirus vaccine due to its special importance in cancer prevention. Live vaccines are generally contraindicated in KT recipients. However, we present a brief review of live vaccines in organ transplant recipients, as there is evidence that certain live virus vaccines may be safe and effective in select groups. Purpose: We present the findings of our final prospective study submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for New Drug Application (NDA) approval for the use of 3,4-dihydroxy-6-[18F]fluoro-l-phenylalanine (F-18 FDOPA) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging for Parkinson's disease (PD). The primary aim was to determine the sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of F-18 FDOPA PET in parkinsonian patients with respect to clinical standard-of-truth (SOT). Secondary outcomes included the inter-rater reliability, and correlation of quantitative measures for PET with dopaminergic status. Methods: In 68 parkinsonian subjects, F-18 FDOPA PET scan from 80 to 100 min was acquired following a CT scan. Scan images were presented to one expert in F-18 FDOPA image interpretation and two physicians with prior experience in I-123 FPCIT single-photon emission computed tomography image interpretation. Fifty-six subjects completed the study with a follow-up for SOT determination. Image readers were blind to the clinical/quantitative data; SOT clinician was blind to the image data. Results: For 47 of the 56 patients, SOT was in agreement with the PET scan results. For nine patients, SOT suggested dopaminergic deficit, whereas the imaging showed normal uptake. The specificity and positive predictive values are 91% and 92%, respectively, suggesting high probability that those who test positive by the PET scan truly have dopaminergic degeneration. The sensitivity was 73%. Inter-rater agreement was 0.6–0.8 between the different readers. Conclusion: Our prospective study demonstrates high specificity and moderate sensitivity of F-18 FDOPA PET for PD. We received NDA approval in October 2019. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
