Metro station construction in densely built urban areas often faces challenges due to limited space on the ground surface for conventional open-cut methods. In such situations, enlarging the driven shield tunnel proves to be a more viable alternative. This paper assesses the effectiveness of the Pile–Beam–Arch method for constructing metro stations by enlarging shield tunnels in areas where conventional methods are impractical. The process of tunnel enlargement involves the destruction of the existing lining and additional excavation around the tunnel, resulting in alterations to in-situ stresses and ground stability. The induced ground movements during this process can have significant impacts on nearby buildings, particularly in densely populated areas. To address this concern, our research focuses on analyzing the ground movements resulting from tunnel enlargement and evaluating their effects on adjacent buildings. Using a three-dimensional numerical analysis based on finite-difference FLAC 3D, we conducted a comprehensive study to assess the safety of the Pile–Beam–Arch tunnel enlargement method concerning adjacent structures in urban areas. The study revealed that the maximum horizontal displacement on the ground surface occurs at a distance of 1.6 times the diameter of the tunnel. This amount of displacement can potentially cause tension cracks in buildings within this vicinity. This indicates that the primary mode of damage in this location is the lateral displacement of the ground transmitted to the foundation and structure. In accordance with Boscardin and Cording diagrams, this critical distance emerges as a pivotal consideration for the safety and stability of urban buildings during the tunnel enlargement process. This paper presents results obtained using three numerical approaches for the basal heave analysis of a hypothetical circular shaft: the Finite Element Method (FEM), Numerical Limit Analysis (NLA), and the Material Point Method (MPM). The Strength Reduction Factor (SRF) methodology was used in conjunction with the MPM, NLA, and FEM to analyze the stability of this structure under dry and saturated conditions. In this paper, we introduced a methodology for applying the SRF technique within the framework of the MPM in a three-dimensional (3D) context. The paper compares and discusses results from the three analysis methods concerning the factor of safety and failure mechanisms. In particular, the failure surface and the run-out condition were also evaluated for a hypothetical case with large deformations using MPM. The results obtained from the three numerical methods exhibited good consistency. Regarding FEM, NLA required the least computational cost to get the safety factor, being a more appealing tool for its estimation, and the MPM allowed consideration of large deformations in the simulations without any additional numerical treatments like remeshing. The current work demonstrates a potential strategy for combining MPM, NLA, and FEM approaches to determine the failure mechanism and the post-rupture processes with large deformations. The excavation and maintenance of buried natural gas pipelines can lead to deformation and stress redistribution of the pipelines and even cause secondary damage to the pipes with issues. To clarify the impact of excavation unloading on buried pipelines, this study established a finite element three-dimensional pipe-soil model, investigated the mechanical response of pipelines under layered excavation and evaluated various parameters impacting the response. The parameters analyzed include the diameter-thickness ratio of the pipe, excavation length and width, thickness of top covering soil, elastic modulus of soil, specific weight of soil and initial displacement of the pipeline. The study results showed that the pipeline bulges upwards during excavation unloading, the pipe top in the middle is under tension, and the bottom of the pipe is under compression. Therefore, the axial stress and vertical displacement both increase first and then decrease, and they are distributed symmetrically along the pipeline axis; excavating the initially compressed pipeline leads to high strain areas in the pipeline and even local buckling. The response to slope excavation is more pronounced than that to straight trench excavation; the additional response of the pipeline increases with the increase of diameter-thickness ratio, excavation width, thickness of pipe top covering soil and specific weight of soil, but it decreases with the increasing soil elastic modulus. The additional response is closely related to excavation length and the initial displacement. A Compact Heat Exchanger has a large heat transfer area per unit volume, which is achieved by utilizing extremely high-density fins. A pin fin is one of the most frequently used fins because of its advantages such as minimal pressure drop and ease of fabrication by adjusting geometric parameters such as fin height (h), fin spacing (a), fin back pitch (b), and fin diameter (d). A numerical examination was carried out on a pin fin to develop a correlation between the Colburn-j factor and friction f factor. The study was conducted for a large range of Reynolds (Re) values, encompassing both laminar (Re 200–2000) and turbulent regions (Re 2500–15000). ANSYS Fluent was used to conduct the CFD-based numerical analysis, with air at 300 K as the working fluid. The Colburn j factor and friction f factor data were acquired in this numerical study for various Reynolds numbers, as well as non-dimensional geometrical characteristics such as the fin diameter-to-fin spacing ratio (d/a), fin diameter-to-fin back pitch ratio (d/b), and fin diameter-to-fin height ratio (d/h) values. These data were validated using available experimental data from open literature. The correlations of the Colburn j factor and friction f factor were determined over a wide range of Reynolds numbers as well as the geometric characteristics of the pin fins, spanning the complete operational range of Compact Heat Exchangers for Aerospace and other applications. This paper investigates an adapted loss function for the estimation of a linear regression with right censored responses. The adapted loss function could be used in composite quantile regression, which is a good method to handle the responses with high censored rate. Under some regular conditions, we establish the consistency and asymptotic normality of the resulting estimator. For estimation of regression parameters, we propose the MMCD algorithm, which generates satisfactory results for the proposed estimator. In addition, the algorithm can also be extended to the fused adaptive lasso penalized method to identify the interquantile commonality. Pile driving can trigger slope failure, specifically in sensitive soil deposits or marginally stable slopes. Cases of slope failure during pile installation have been reported in countries such as Norway, Sweden and Canada where soft sensitive clay deposits are prevalent. Although a few approaches have been suggested to assess the factor of safety of a slope during pile driving, there is currently no standard method recognized by the geotechnical society to account for the reduction of safety factor of a slope as an effect of pile installation. Some approaches suggest using the excess pore pressure generated during pile driving to account for the reduction in soil strength (by reducing effective stresses), neglecting the change in total stresses. This paper discusses the accuracy of stability analysis methods currently in use for this problem by looking at stress changes in the soil during pile driving as well as using numerical analysis results. Importantly, the paper identifies the shortcomings regarding these approaches, thus allowing geo-engineers to understand the limitations of their analysis and the uncertainties in the models. Particle morphology is a crucial determining factor in the physicochemical properties of geological materials. Currently, there are still substantial challenges with the characterization and reconstruction of the morphology of irregular particles. Most currently used characterization and reconstruction methods were developed separately, and lack cohesive integration of parameters between the two processes. This limitation hinders the comprehensive characterization of the multiscale geometric features and impedes a clear relation between geometrical features and reconstruction parameters. Therefore, a unified 2D and 3D morphological characterization method for irregular particles is developed in this paper, enabling a systematic morphology quantification across three relative scales. Furthermore, a geometric parameters-driven particle reconstruction approach is proposed, which is the reverse of the quantification process, achieving precise and controllable 2D and 3D irregular morphology reconstruction. The proposed methods achieve, for the first time, an integrated quantification and reconstruction framework of irregular particle morphology, as well as a unified 2D and 3D morphology characterization. Notably, the proposed approach exhibits strong robustness and computational efficiency when performing 2D and 3D particle morphology quantification and precisely controllable virtual particle reconstruction, which are the bases for accurate mechanical analyses and numerical simulations. Selectively thickening core wall is an effective approach to improve the birefringence of hollow core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBGF). However, the variation of core wall thickness has a significant influence on the transmission loss and transmission bandwidth. In this paper, the effects of selectively thickening core wall on birefringence and loss performance of the HC-PBGF are systematically investigated. Numerical analysis results indicate that when the core wall thickness in the y-direction is 2.4 to 3.3 times as that in the x-direction, the birefringence of a 19-cell HC-PBGF can be improved to 10− 4, meanwhile the transmission loss can be controlled below 10 dB/km. The high birefringence (≥ 10− 4), low transmission loss (< 10 dB/km) performance can be maintained in a wide waveband from 1460 to 1610 nm, even under a tight bending radius of 6 mm. The applicability of selectively thickening core wall on improving birefringence is also confirmed in the 7-cell HC-PBGF and 37-cell HC-PBGF, where the birefringence of 7-cell HC-PBGF and 37-cell HC-PBGF can be enhanced to 5.5 × 10− 4 and 5.0 × 10− 5, respectively. Moreover, to further reduce the transmission loss, two modified structures (adding nodes or anti-resonant layer) are discussed. The numerical analysis results demonstrate that the structure by adding nodes on the thickened core wall is more advantageous in terms of reducing transmission loss and expanding transmission bandwidth. In soft soil layers, piles are frequently loaded laterally by horizontal soil movements. In many cases, the lateral pressure acting on piles due to horizontal soil movements is calculated with empirically or analytically based approaches, respectively. However, most of these design approaches do not consider possible influences on the resulting pile loads. This paper presents the results of model tests and numerical simulations on single piles and pile groups in cohesive soil subjected to lateral loads which were carried out to overcome limitations of available design approaches. Based on extensive small-scale 1 × g-model tests and numerical investigations with the finite element method, influencing factors on the lateral pressure, such as the roughness of the pile–soil interface, the pile size, the pile shape and the pile spacing were identified. A parametric study with the numerical model quantified the most relevant factors influencing the development of lateral pressure on piles due to adjacent surface loads and lead to the development of a simplified analysis approach. With the development of cloud computing, users are more inclined to outsource complex computing tasks to cloud servers with strong computing capacity, and the cloud returns the final calculation results. However, the cloud is not completely trustworthy, which may leak the data of user and even return incorrect calculations on purpose. Therefore, it is important to verify the results of computing tasks without revealing the privacy of the users. Among all the computing tasks, the polynomial calculation is widely used in information security, linear algebra, signal processing and other fields. Most existing polynomial-based verifiable computation schemes require that the input of the polynomial function must come from a single data source, which means that the data must be signed by a single user. However, the input of the polynomial may come from multiple users in the practical application. In order to solve this problem, the researchers have proposed some schemes for multi-source outsourced data, but these schemes have the common problem of low efficiency. To improve the efficiency, this paper proposes an efficient polynomial-based verifiable computation scheme on multi-source outsourced data. We optimize the polynomials using Horner's method to increase the speed of verification, in which the addition gate and the multiplication gate can be interleaved to represent the polynomial function. In order to adapt to this structure, we design the corresponding homomorphic verification tag, so that the input of the polynomial can come from multiple data sources. We prove the correctness and rationality of the scheme, and carry out numerical analysis and evaluation research to verify the efficiency of the scheme. The experimental indicate that data contributors can sign 1000 new data in merely 2 s, while the verification of a delegated polynomial function with a power of 100 requires only 18 ms. This paper presents a novel approach to analyzing the dynamics of COVID-19 using nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) schemes. Our model incorporates both asymptomatic and symptomatic infected individuals, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of the epidemic's spread. We introduce an unconditionally stable NSFD system that eliminates the need for traditional Runge–Kutta methods, ensuring dynamical consistency and numerical accuracy. Through rigorous numerical analysis, we evaluate the performance of different NSFD strategies and validate our analytical findings. Our work demonstrates the benefits of using NSFD schemes for modeling infectious diseases, offering advantages in terms of stability and efficiency. We further illustrate the dynamic behavior of COVID-19 under various conditions using numerical simulations. Enhancing information security has become increasingly significant in the digital age. This paper investigates the concept of physical layer security (PLS) within a relay-aided power line communication (PLC) system operating over a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel based on MK model. Specifically, we examine the transmission of confidential signals between a source and a distant destination while accounting for the presence of multiple eavesdroppers, both colluding and non-colluding. We propose a two-phase jamming scheme that leverages a full-duplex (FD) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay to address this challenge. Our primary objective is to maximize the secrecy rate, which necessitates the optimization of the jamming precoding and transmitting precoding matrices at both the source and the relay while adhering to transmit power constraints. We present a formulation of this problem and demonstrate that it can be efficiently solved using an effective block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm. Simulation results are conducted to validate the convergence and performance of the proposed algorithm. These findings confirm the effectiveness of our approach. Furthermore, the numerical analysis reveals that our proposed algorithm surpasses traditional schemes that lack jamming to achieve higher secrecy rates. Respiratory sensitivity and pneumonia are possible outcomes of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Surface characteristics like temperature and sunshine affect how long the virus survives. This research article analyzes COVID-19 mathematical model behavior based on symptomatic and non-symptomatic individuals. In the reproductive model, the best result indicates the intensity of the epidemic. Our model remained stable at a certain point under controlled conditions after we evaluated a specific element. This approach is in place of traditional approaches such as Euler's and Runge–Kutta's. An unusual numerical approach known as the non-standard finite difference (NSFD) scheme is used in this article. This numerical approach gives us positivity. A dependable numerical analysis allowed us to evaluate different approaches and verify our theoretical results. Unlike the widely used Euler and RK4 approaches, we investigated the benefits of implementing NSFD schemes. By numerically simulating COVID-19 in a variety of scenarios, we demonstrated how our theoretical concepts work. The simulation findings support the usefulness of both approaches. In this paper, the authors discuss a three-dimensional problem of the semiconductor device type involved its mathematical description, numerical simulation and theoretical analysis. Two important factors, heat and magnetic influences are involved. The mathematical model is formulated by four nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs), determining four major physical variables. The influences of magnetic fields are supposed to be weak, and the strength is parallel to the z-axis. The elliptic equation is treated by a block-centered method, and the law of conservation is preserved. The computational accuracy is improved one order. Other equations are convection-dominated, thus are approximated by upwind block-centered differences. Upwind difference can eliminate numerical dispersion and nonphysical oscillation. The diffusion is approximated by the block-centered difference, while the convection term is treated by upwind approximation. Furthermore, the unknowns and adjoint functions are computed at the same time. These characters play important roles in numerical computations of conductor device problems. Using the theories of priori analysis such as energy estimates, the principle of duality and mathematical inductions, an optimal estimates result is obtained. The occurrence of rockfalls is a prevalent geological hazard, especially in the Three Gorges Reservoir area of the Yangtze River. Analyzing the pre-rockfall evolution process of hazardous rock mass is crucial for stability assessment, risk monitoring, and evaluation. Generally, numerical analysis is conducted to study the rock stability and failure; however, it is primarily based on the two-dimensional calculation of typical cross-sections without considering the shape of the three-dimensional space of the hazardous rock mass, thus leading to distorted results. To address this issue, this paper proposes a methodological approach for the analysis of the stability conditions of a hazardous rock mass. The approach starts with field investigations and an Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetric survey to gather data. These data are then used to construct a three-dimensional (3D) geological model of rock mass. Finally, a 3D numerical simulation is performed to analyse the potential failure processes of hazardous rock mass. In this study, we focused on the hazardous Diaozui rock mass of the Qutang Gorge in the Three Gorges Reservoir area (China). We constructed a 3D geological model of the rock mass based on the data from the field survey and UAV photogrammetric survey. Using this 3D geological model, we established a 3D numerical analysis model to assess the rockfall hazard. By utilizing the Strength reduction method (SRM) and simulating the collapse process of the hazardous rock mass, we analyzed the instability mechanism and failure evolution process of the Hazardous Diaozui rock mass. The results illustrated the potential failure mode, the key-oriented wedges of the rock mass, and the potential critical failure point for the hazardous rock mass. This document is a preface to a special issue of the journal "Computational Optimization & Applications" dedicated to Fredi Tröltzsch on his 70th birthday. Tröltzsch is a mathematician known for his work in optimal control problems for partial differential equations (PDEs). His contributions include analytical and numerical advancements in the field, particularly in the area of bang-bang principles and Lagrange multipliers. Tröltzsch has also collaborated with industry partners on real-world applications of his research. The special issue features six papers written by Tröltzsch's colleagues, friends, and former students, covering various aspects of optimal control of nonlinear differential equations. The main goal of this paper is to investigate the hydrodynamic and vibrational behavior of the 2000 mm diameter Howell Bunger valve that will be installed in the Khodaafrin dam. The existence of a historical bridge downstream of this dam makes it important to investigate the vibration and hydrodynamic behavior of the valve, so that its design and operation should be in such a way that the historical bridge located downstream will not be damaged. In order to achieve this goal, the valves are considered to have submerged discharge, and this has raised the need to investigate the hydrodynamic behavior of the valve and compare it with the non-submerged state. To investigate the behavior of the valve, a 1:20 model of the valve, hood and discharge pool were designed and built. Then, the experimental rig was designed and equipped with measuring equipment, and the model valve was subjected to hydrodynamic and vibration tests with different opening percentages in non-submerged and submerged states with different downstream pool depths. These experiments have been repeated for the valve with hood and without hood and the results have been compared. Then, the finite element model of the 1:20 model valve was developed and hydrodynamically analyzed and the numerical results were compared with the experimental data. After ensuring the correctness of the numerical model, it was used to investigate the behavior of the valve in different conditions. The results show that there is not much change in the flow rate when the valve is submerged, but the range of vibrations decreases significantly. This decrease in the amplitude of vibrations becomes more dominant with increasing the depth of the pool. This article deals with the numerical analysis of a class of singularly perturbed delay Volterra integro-differential equations exhibiting multiple boundary layers. The discretization of the considered problem is done using an implicit difference scheme for the differential term and a composite numerical integration rule for the integral term. The analysis of the discrete scheme consists of two parts. First, we establish an a priori error estimate that is used to prove robust convergence of the discrete scheme on Shishkin and Bakhvalov type meshes. Next, we establish the maximum norm a posteriori error estimate that involves difference derivatives of the approximate solution. This paper investigates a 2-bit all-optical analog-to-digital converter (AO-ADC) using the photonic crystal (PhC) structure. The proposed structure comprises a 27 × 27 grid of silicon rods in air with a refractive index of 3.6. In the design of this converter, a linear demultiplexer and an optical encoder are used. The optical demultiplexer has one input and three outputs. Optical coding has three inputs and two outputs. In general, this converter consists of one input and two outputs, and according to the output light power from the structure and the threshold level of the converter, two logical 0 and 1 states are created in the output. The footprint of the proposed AO-ADC is as small as 118.5 µm2 making it more suitable for use in the optical integrated circuits (OICs) compared to the previous structures. The proposed AO-ADC works at an operating wavelength of 1550 nm with a response time of about 0.6 ps and also works with lower optical intensity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Layered rock slope exists widely. Because of its special slope structure, it is prone to bending deformation and toppling failure, which is a serious threat to engineering construction and safety operation. At present, the research of layered rock slope still has great innovation potential. During the construction of Wudongde Hydropower Station on Jinsha River, safety and stability problems such as slope geological structure development, face rock unloading and relaxation, and even slip and large deformation were encountered. Through field exploration, it is found that the rock and soil stratification of the slope on both sides of Wudongde Hydropower Station is highly obvious. At present, there is a lack of research on-site long-term displacement monitoring of layered rock high-steep slope, especially for layered slope in complex hydrogeology and construction environment. In order to strengthen the research on the deformation and stability of layered rock slope, this paper analyzes the measured displacement data of Wudongde hydropower station slope, and establishes three-dimensional geological finite element model with the help of numerical simulation software. The stability of the slope is calculated by combining the finite difference method and the strength reduction method. Finally, the evolution mechanism of the deformation of the layered rock slope is explained according to the geological structure characteristics. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows: the layered slope in the dam reservoir area is prone to deformation under the combined action of long-term construction disturbance and fissure water seepage, and the construction disturbance has a strong influence on the artificial excavation area below 1070 m, and the maximum rock mass deformation and surface displacement in the artificial excavation area of the slope reach 92.2 mm and 312.5 mm, respectively. However, the influence of construction disturbance on the natural mountain above 1070 m is limited, the valley deformation of the natural mountain on the left bank of the reservoir area is higher than that on the right bank, and the cumulative deformation is still less than 20 mm. The influence of seepage on the displacement of the area with higher elevation at the top of the slope is more obvious, and the influence of excavation and other disturbances on the displacement of the artificial excavation area with lower elevation is more obvious. The deformation of the river valley in the water cushion pond behind the dam increases slowly, and the change trend of the field deformation data is mostly consistent with that of the numerical calculation. The horizontal shrinkage of the mountains on both sides shows a contraction trend on the whole, and the maximum horizontal shrinkage calculated by numerical simulation is close to 20 mm, which is located at the elevation of 990 m. Loss is a critical performance metric in piezoelectric devices, directly impacting energy conversion efficiency and the overall stability of device operation. However, the complexity arises from the fact that losses in piezoelectric vibrators encompass dielectric, mechanical, and piezoelectric components, making their distinction challenging due to the interplay of various losses on admittance and impedance near the resonant frequency. In this paper, a model employing a mechanically unbounded, electrically open circuit longitudinal piezoelectric oscillator is utilized. We derived impedance and phase expressions for the piezoelectric oscillator, accounting for different types of losses, based on the third order of the piezoelectric equation. Subsequently, we conduct a numerical analysis of the theoretically derived expressions, investigating the impact of the three distinct loss types on impedance and phase values. Our study aims to establish a quantitative relationship between dielectric, mechanical, and piezoelectric losses and the phase characteristic data. In this paper, we discuss properties of the singular value decomposition (SVD-decomposition) within the framework of the analysis of the numerical rank in ill-posed problems for determining frequency properties of discrete sequences consisting of trigonometric binomials. The properties of the numerical rank of the SVD-decomposition are indicated. We propose an algorithm for determining the frequencies of trigonometric binomials involved in the original function that forms a discrete sequence; this algorithm is based on estimates of the numerical rank. We obtain a stable criterion for estimating the numerical rank based on the arithmetic-mean estimators of the pseudo-null-space of the trajectory matrix. Also, we present the results of numerical experiments that demonstrate the consistency of the arithmetic-mean estimator of the pseudo-zero-space for the analysis of the spectrum of noisy sequences. This paper studies the dynamics and integrability of a variable-length coupled pendulum system. The complexity of the model is presented by joining various numerical methods, such as the Poincaré cross sections, phase-parametric diagrams, and Lyapunov exponents spectra. We show that the presented model is hyperchaotic, which ensures its nonintegrability. We gave analytical proof of this fact analyzing properties of the differential Galois group of variational equations along certain particular solutions of the system. We employ the Kovacic algorithm and its extension to dimension four to analyze the differential Galois group. Amazingly enough, in the absence of the gravitational potential and for certain values of the parameters, the system can exhibit chaotic, integrable, as well as superintegrable dynamics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to use the method of Lyapunov exponents in the systematic search for the first integrals of the system. We show how to effectively apply the Lyapunov exponents as an indicator of integrable dynamics. The explicit forms of integrable and superintegrable systems are given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To thoroughly investigate the stress mechanism of clustered group nail connectors in steel–concrete composite structures, this paper conducts a detailed numerical analysis on 100 sets of such connectors. It analyzes the stress mechanism of individual nail connectors and quantitatively calculates the group nail effect under the coupled action of multiple factors (nail spacing between layers, number of nail layers, concrete strength). Based on clarifying the force transmission patterns of nails and concrete in different layers during the loading process, this paper proposes a method for calculating the average bearing capacity reduction coefficient and the load-slip curve of single nails in clustered group nail connectors under the coupled action of multiple factors, which has been validated by experimental data. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we prove L p estimates for a regularized Green's function in three dimensions. We then establish new estimates for the discrete Green's function and obtain some positivity results. In particular, we prove that the discrete Green's functions with singularity in the interior of the domain cannot be bounded uniformly with respect of the mesh parameter h. Actually, we show that at the singularity the discrete Green's function is of order h - 1 , which is consistent with the behavior of the continuous Green's function. In addition, we also show that the discrete Green's function is positive and decays exponentially away from the singularity. We also provide numerically persistent negative values of the discrete Green's function on Delaunay meshes which then implies a discrete Harnack inequality cannot be established for unstructured finite element discretizations. This paper introduces a novel approach for analyzing efficient numerical solution of a class of singularly perturbed parabolic convection-diffusion PDEs having a finite jump discontinuity mostly in the source function at the interior of the spatial domain. These PDEs often appear in mathematical modeling of the semiconductor devices; and solutions of such problems usually exhibit a weak interior layer at one side of the point of discontinuity along with a boundary layer at one side of the spatial domain. The prime objectives of this paper are to overcome the theoretical challenge related to the monotonocity of the finite difference operator which utilizes one-sided second-order difference operators at the interface point; and also to establish higher-order numerical approximation in space, regardless of smaller and larger values of the parameter ε. Proving discrete maximum principle of the proposed difference operator is found to be challenging task on the standard Shishkin mesh adapted to both boundary and weak interior layers. We overcome this difficulty by constructing a special non-uniform mesh, called modified layer-adapted mesh; and hereby establish the stability as well as the parameter-uniform error estimate in the discrete supremum norm. Finally, the theoretical estimate is verified with numerical results for test examples with and without the exact solution. Continuous monitoring of the structural health of strategic structures and transport infrastructures plays a crucial role in providing an effective assessment of the safety conditions and in timely planning of the ordinary and extraordinary maintenance programme. Deformation monitoring and dynamic characteristic identification are some commonly used strategies for this purpose. One of the main challenges of recent years in the field of structural health monitoring is the use of data deriving from satellite interferometry, capable of providing information on structural deformations at a local and territorial scale. Despite the solidity and dependability of satellite-based methods for assessing ground deformation over time, when it comes to structural surveillance, there are certain circumstances under which satellites are incapable of accurately assessing displacements. This is particularly true for structures that are sensitive to temperature variations. The paper uses the "Ponte della Musica–Armando Trovajoli" in Rome as a case study to explore these aspects in more depth. This bridge has a steel arch structure with a prestressed concrete deck below it. It represents an example in which satellite differential interferometry does not allow obtaining useful information on displacement, at least for the most deformable portion of the deck, and therefore also on any pathological movements. This work proposes a 3D digital twin of the bridge, appropriately calibrated through experimental measurements of the environmental vibrations performed on the bridge. This will allow to evaluate the role played by thermal deformations related to air temperature variations and thus better understand the connection between physiological deformations and satellite limits. This paper investigates the impact of various copper (Cu) pillar bump heights on temperature distribution, deformation and thermal stress during reflow. The virtual reflow oven environment was simulated using the fluid domain of the oven model. The accuracy of the fluid analysis was verified by comparing the obtained results with experimental data, which was conducted based on the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) Standard. In addition, a grid independence test was carried out on the fluid mesh to determine the optimal mesh size for the simulations. A thermal fluid–structure interaction (FSI) approach was employed to couple the thermal results from the fluid analysis with the solid assembly. The results of the coupling analysis revealed that Cu pillar bumps with a height of 0.09 mm exhibited the lowest reflow temperature, minimal maximum deformation, and thermal stress, indicating that it is the optimal potential height for forming a good joint. The study also examines the impact of soldering materials, such as tin-bismuth (SnBi) and tin-silver-copper solder alloys (SAC305 and SAC405), on the Cu pillar bump. We have performed a systematical study of the eclectic flavor group ∆(27) ⋊ S3 which is the extension of the traditional flavor symmetry ∆(27) by the finite modular symmetry S3. Consistency between ∆(27) and S3 requires that the eight nontrivial singlet representations of ∆(27) should be arranged into four reducible doublets. The modular transformation matrices are determined for various ∆(27) multiplets, and the CP-like symmetry compatible with ∆(27) ⋊ S3 are discussed. We study the general form of the Kähler potential and superpotential invariant under ∆(27) ⋊ S3, and the corresponding fermion mass matrices are presented. Purpose: This paper is aimed to separate each mode and identify modal damping accurately in multimodal signals. A novel damping identification strategy based on DOA-VMD-EIM (variational mode decomposition optimized by dingo optimization algorithm combined with envelope integral method) for aeroengine mounting pedestals is presented in this work. Methods: Energy difference indicator is firstly constructed by difference between the total vibration energy of each component and vibration energy of original signal. Then, the variational mode decomposition (VMD) parameters combination (K, α, τ) is optimized by the dingo optimization algorithm (DOA) using the minimum energy difference index as optimization objective. Furthermore, combined with envelope integral method (EIM), the damping ratio is deduced. Finally, the proposed DOA-VMD-EIM method is verified numerically and experimentally. Results: Numerical analysis and test results indicate that the presented DOA-VMD-EIM technique can realize correct decomposition of each component of vibration signal, and obtain more accurate damping ratio results compared to classical half power bandwidth method (HPBM). Conclusions: It is experimentally verified that the proposed DOA-VMD-EIM damping method is effective. Crafting a model possessing high-fidelity state transfer is one of the important topics discussed in the literature because of its wide applications. In this paper, we study a state transfer problem in a central spin model in the presence of external classical modulations to address some aspects of the Epstein effect. Experimental studies behind the Epstein effect demonstrate that a classical modulation/vibration can cause state transfer in a system that was previously thought to be impossible. This is another demonstration of a nontrivial impact of the classical world on the quantum one to be understood yet and our work is a step toward it. Excavation in Sabkha soils, found in coastal regions of Saudi Arabia, presents complex challenges in construction due to their unique geotechnical characteristics. These soils are known for their high compressibility, collapsibility, and variable sediment deposition, rendition them unsuitable for excavation without adequate support systems. As urbanization and industrial activities continue to expand into these areas, the demand for effective excavation support systems becomes gradually critical. This study investigates the feasibility of employing Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) as an excavation support system in Sabkha soils. Utilizing finite element analysis through PLAXIS 3D software, the behaviour of DSM walls in Sabkha soil under various conditions is rigorously simulated. The findings of this research establish that DSM walls can serve as an efficient excavation support system in Sabkha soils, provided that crucial factors, particularly excavation depth, are considered during the design phase. The study demonstrates that properly designed DSM walls, in combination with appropriate anchoring methods, can substantially reduce horizontal displacement and bending moments, ensuring the stability of excavations in Sabkha soils. The research highlights the need for further investigations into the cost-effectiveness of DSM walls in comparison to other excavation support options to evaluate the economic feasibility of using DSM in Sabkha soil applications. In the process of drilling and blasting construction of large-cross-section tunnels, the layout of wedge-shaped cutting holes has a great influence on the effect of blasting. In this study, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation were used to assess the effect of different forms of cutting hole placement on blasting effectiveness. First, the fissure-inducing angle was proposed, a three-dimensional model of wedge-shaped cutting considering the effect of shear-tensile resistance was established, and theoretical analyses of cutting holes with different cutting angles and fissure-inducing angles were carried out. Second, the parameters of the Riedel–Hiermaier–Thoma model were determined based on the experimental data, and verified. Third, three-dimensional numerical models were established, and analyze the influence of different forms of hole deployment on the blasting effect from the perspective of stress wave propagation and dynamic damage to the surrounding rock. Finally, based on the theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results, the wedge-shaped hollowing holes were re-designed, and 20 tunnel blasting tests were carried out using this deployment method for large-section tunnel blasting, which verified the feasibility of this deployment method. The results of the study show that for level III surrounding rock, the angle of wedge-shaped cutting holes should meet 68° ≤ θ ≤ 70° and 70° ≤ β ≤ 72°. This paper presents a numerical analysis of different rheology models during the encapsulation of moulded underfill (MUF) for flip-chip package. Robust computational fluid dynamics of finite volume analysis software; ANSYS FLUENT Workbench 14.5 was utilised in three-dimensional. A remarkable analysis was carried out by considering three distinctions among rheology models, namely Power Law, Cross, and Castro-Macosko. Nevertheless, a unique function has been written for the Castro–Macosko model since it considers the curing effect using user-defined functions. The volume of fluid technique was utilised to track the flow front of epoxy moulding compound (EMC). Beforehand, the flow visualization for the tray cavity has been verified by both experiment and simulation qualitatively, and it has been found to be in good agreement. It also conformed to the rheological properties, i.e., viscosity and shear rate. For MUF encapsulation, the 3D views of the melt front profile during encapsulation were presented. In addition, the viscosity-shear rate and void formation versus rows of multi-flip chips for all models were plotted and discussed. The numerical results have shown that the best rheology model for EMC during encapsulation was the Castro-Macosko model with consideration of curing effect. It was clearly found that the retardation flow occurred since the conversion of EMC took place, i.e., the curing effect. In this paper, finite element method is used to calculate the static performance of gas journal bearing, in which rotation speed term is introduced into the stiffness matrix of linear triangular element to realize the performance calculation of the bearing with rotation speed. The results indicate that the average gas film thicknesses corresponding to the maximum load capacity and stiffness, and the minimum attitude angle increase with the growth of orifice diameter. Load capacity and stiffness significantly improved with the increase of rotation speed, eccentricity ratio and supply pressure when the bearing has thin average gas film thickness. Attitude angle increases with the growth of rotation speed, while the growth rate slows down or even decreases at high speed. The most effective way of reducing attitude angle is to increase supply pressure. It can be found that rotation speed affects attitude angle through changing gas pressure difference between two orifices, while other parameters have the same effect by changing gas pressure at orifice outlet. Propped cantilever truss is not a common bridge construction technique. The performance of such bridges under operational and extreme loading is not reported in the literature either. In this paper, failure mechanisms in a propped cantilever truss bridge are reported using field investigation. The field observations are supplemented by numerical analysis to identify the causes of failure. A a systematic account of damage mechanisms in bridge components is also reported. The failure of the Lamgadi Bridge over the Seti River in Nepal is used as a case study example. The loading and construction protocols are detailed, and numerical analysis results are juxtaposed with the field observations to explain the failure mechanisms. Field observations and numerical results show that lack in adequate design is the most likely cause of the bridge collapse. Numerical results also indicate that the roller support at the propped end, unlike the hinged pot bearing used in the as constructed bridge would have been a safer choice. Aimed at understanding the pneumatic regenerative braking system, one simulation model was established based on the basic parameters of the regenerative braking system and validated based on an experimental test bed. Then the effects of air compressor displacement and accumulator volume on the braking energy recovery process were analyzed. For the analysis, the accumulator volume is set as 12 L, the maximum pressure is set as 3 MPa, the air compressor displacement is set as 560 cc r–1, and the total mass of the vehicle is 1699 kg. The analysis results show that the vehicle needs more than 100 s to stop while the regeneration efficiency is 5.7% when the initial speed is set as 120 km h–1 and the pneumatic regenerative braking system is applied. Further analysis showed that the air compressor displacement has a great influence on the regenerative braking system. The braking distance increases with the increasing of the accumulator volume while the energy regeneration efficiency reduces with the increasing of the accumulator volume. The paper deals with numerical analysis of the effect of stress state and loading direction with respect to the rolling direction on damage and fracture behavior of anisotropic metals. The continuum damage model has been enhanced to take into account the influence of production-induced anisotropies and loading direction on damage criteria and on evolution equations of damage strains. Constitutive parameters are determined using experimental results taken from tests with uni- and biaxially loaded specimens. The focus of the paper is on three-dimensional micro-mechanical numerical analyses of micro-defect-containing representative volume elements covering a wide range of stress states. These calculations lead to more insight in the different damage and failure processes on the micro-scale and their influence on the macroscopic damage laws. With the obtained numerical results it is possible to detect general trends, to propose governing equations for the damage criteria, to develop evolution equations for the damage strains, and to identify constitutive parameters of the anisotropic material model. It is shown that the anisotropic behavior and the loading direction with respect to the principal axes of anisotropy affect the evolution of damage mechanisms on the micro-level as well as the corresponding damage strains. Splines are piecewise polynomial functions which are continuously differentiable to some order r. For a fixed integer d the space of splines of degree at most d is a finite dimensional vector space, and a largely open problem in numerical analysis is to determine its dimension. While considerable attention has been given to this problem in the bivariate setting, the literature on trivariate splines is less conclusive. In particular, the dimension of generic trivariate splines is not known even in large degree when r > 1 . In this paper we use a bound we previously derived for splines on vertex stars to compute a new lower bound on the dimension of trivariate splines in large enough degree. We illustrate in several examples that our formula gives the exact dimension of the spline space in large enough degree if vertex positions are generic. In contrast, for splines continuously differentiable of order r > 1 , every lower bound in the literature diverges (often significantly) in large degree from the dimension of the spline space in these examples. The planned viaduct in Jining, Shandong is a priority project in the city. However, the 63 working faces of a mine in Jining is only 3 m away from the planned viaduct, posing a serious threat to the safety of the viaduct's construction. Consequently, it is essential to evaluate the stability of the planned viaduct's goaf area under the influence of the 63 working faces. However, the 63 working faces are short faces, and there is a lack of corresponding prediction of surface residual subsidence. To address this issue, this paper employs theoretical analysis and numerical simulation to uncover the foundation deformation mechanism and characteristics of fractured rock and soil mass in the short goaf. Subsequently, a residual subsidence prediction method for the short goaf was proposed for the viaduct mined-out area. This new approach was implemented for the planned viaduct in Jining, and its effectiveness was validated through InSAR and leveling monitoring results. Real-world problems often deal with uncertainties related to imprecision and vagueness, for which fuzzy modeling has provided a successful approach. Ranking fuzzy numbers is a necessary and complex task in multiple processes, such as decision making. To facilitate the task of ranking fuzzy numbers, it has been introduced an approach to construct fuzzy distances from classical interval distances because their α-cuts are continuous intervals. Usually, extant interval distances use interval endpoints or midpoints, leading to results that might not reflect the correct distance because of information loss. This paper introduces a new fuzzy distance based on a novel interval distance that considers all points within the intervals by using the concept of integration to calculate the average distance between all points belonging to two intervals, respectively. Subsequently, a series of distances between fuzzy numbers based on the proposed interval distances are defined and proved. A new method for ranking fuzzy numbers using the new fuzzy distances is then presented. In this study, the impact resistance performance of the steel internal structure, which is fixed with screws between the front and rear plate, has a 90° bent form and is placed to deflect the penetrating bullet, was measured. This article presents the ballistic performance of the designed armor system against 7.62 mm armor-piercing projectiles with a velocity of 630 to 870 ± 10 m/s, coming at an angle of 90° to the front plate. The study was carried out both experimentally and numerically. Experimental results showed that remarkable ballistic results were obtained among the investigated materials examined in 32 mm thick aluminum-steel-aluminum sheet structures. Numerical and experimental results were compared and a significant correlation was found. COVID-19 is undoubtedly the most dangerous and highly contagious disease in 21st century. Intensive researches have and are being done to unearth effective vaccines to deal with future pandemics. In this research, we developed a deterministic model for COVID-19 driven by asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals taking into consideration the indispensable role of vaccination in combating disease transmission. The dissection of the proposed model was conferred in terms of the associated reproduction number R 0 , which is determined by utilizing the next-generation matrix (NGM) approach and forms the basis upon which the model's stability analysis is established. The analysis showed that COVID-19 free equilibrium (CFE) is locally asymptotically stable for R 0 < 1 and unstable if R 0 > 1 . The local stability of endemic equilibrium was explored using center manifold theorem where the method utilized by Castilo-Chavez and Song was implemented and revealed that backward bifurcation was driven by the vaccine efficacy. The results revealed that increased administration levels of vaccine, increased identification and treatment of the asymptomatic and strict adherence to isolation for the symptomatic individuals would curtail COVID-19 infections from burgeoning to catastrophic levels that would overrun the capacity of health care support system. The present work is focused on studying the behavior of unreinforced brick masonry (URBM) structure under the seismic loading. A single story unreinforced brick masonry structure was made on a shake table with a scale of 1:4. Based on the experimental findings, the failure of the URBM structure happened at frequency of 62.5 cycle per second (cps) which means the resonant frequency of the structure was 62.5 cps. Besides, the highest acceleration and displacement occurred at frequency 62.5 cps leading to confirming the resonance at the same frequency. The failure pattern of URBM structure is like a stair step that means in-plane failure has developed in the mortar. In addition, the numerical analysis of the same building was performed using the SAP2000 finite element software. A time history analysis was conducted using elastic properties of the brick masonry building. The numerical and experimental results of peak acceleration and displacement were obtained at the roof level of the structure with respect to the varying base excitation. The gas production of offshore gas well testing is generally large, and sand production is inevitable, which will cause erosion risk of testing pipeline. In this research, surface process structure in deepwater gas well testing has been analyzed and the potential risk points of the process have been pointed out. According to the analysis results of elbow structure characteristics in potential risk points, material properties, natural gas production, solid phase change law, and material sampling of field elbow in testing surface process, combined with modified erosion testing system, the erosion of samples with different erosion times, erosion angles, fluid velocities and particle concentrations were studied. The results showed that the erosion number of particles on pipe samples was larger in the first 2 h. The erosion number of samples was rapidly increased with the increase in fluid velocity and sand concentration. When the angle between particle movement direction and sample wall plane was about 30°, erosion amount reached its maximum value. Impact forces between particles and solid materials change in vertical and horizontal components, affecting the morphology of erosion pits. Based on erosion experiment results and considering fluid flow theory, sand movement theory and OKA erosion model, numerical simulations of elbow erosion under different fluid velocities, particle concentrations and particle sizes were carried out and the erosion law of elbow was further explained. An experimental analysis was conducted to investigate the use of external steel plates as tensile reinforcement in concrete beams with prefabricated cages and its failure pattern. A prefabricated cage with an external steel plate as tensile reinforcement and stirrups welded directly to the steel plate was used as the rebar cage for the reinforced concrete beam. This work aims to explore the feasibility of external steel plates as tension reinforcement in terms of their bending behavior and deformability till the failure stage. Twelve specimens with the same beam geometry and concrete grade were used. The ultimate load, load–deflection characteristics, and crack pattern have been studied with respect to the control beam. There are four sets of specimens, which are control beam, plate-reinforced concrete beam, control beam with bent-up bar, and plate-reinforced concrete beam with bent-up bar. Two approaches have been taken in this study: an in-house experimental investigation incorporating theoretical analysis and a numerical simulation utilizing finite element approach (FEA). The obtained experimental data indicated a firm agreement of around 94.7–100% with that of the reference beam with the reduction of crack width, number of cracks, and compressive strain on the steel plate-reinforced beams. Purpose: This paper investigates a vibration energy harvester with a triangular structure for lowfrequency vibrations, focusing on the analysis of nonlinear stiffness and damping characteristics generated by the structure itself for advantageous harvesting performance. Methods: First, Euler–Lagrange equation of the system is established based on Hamilton's principle. Then, with the mathematical modeling, the dynamic response of the system is derived using Harmonic Balance Method, which is discussed by numerical analysis. Based on the analytical solutions, the effects on harvesting power changed by different assembly angles, connecting rod length and excitation amplitudes are studied particularly. The advantageous harvesting performance of the proposed system is shown by comparing it with a corresponding conventional linear system. Results: The result shows that the triangular structure in the system is beneficial for expanding the power output and energy-harvesting bandwidth. Further, the resonant frequency of the system can be tuned to a desired value by adjusting the assembly angle according to the characteristics of surrounding vibration sources. Conclusions: Therefore, the harvester system in this work is demonstrated to provide an effective method for design to scavenge the low-frequency vibration energy from the ambient environment in engineering. To solve the issues of slippage and dislodging caused by insufficient grout compactness in railway bridge spherical steel bearings, a novel kind of anti-separation spherical steel bearing is presented. Firstly, a comparative test model was meticulously designed and constructed for the bearing-stone assembly, encompassing both the traditional spherical steel bearing and the innovative anti-separation spherical steel bearing. Next, mechanical performance testing and finite element simulation analysis were completed. Finally, an empirical equation for the vertical load-strain fitting of the bearing was established. The results demonstrate that, under the maximum vertical static load, the convex spherical crown anti-separation design of the new anti-dislodging bearing is not sensitive to the bearing performance of the bearing-bedding stone combination. All indexes also meet the specifications. Under the action of cyclic load, the error of each parameter between finite element analysis and test results is less than 7%, which shows that the new anti- separation spherical bearing has higher bearing capacity and better fatigue resistance; the fitted value of the established bearing vertical load-strain calculation formula is in agreement with the test value by more than 0.95, which can predict whether the new anti-separation bearing fails. This paper provides an analytical formula for valuing lease contracts in the most general case, including adjustable leases, with cancellation, purchase, and default options. We then illustrate the numerical implementation of our model. Numerical analysis reveals that the lessor offers a discount on the initial rent for a longer-term lease contract but charges an additional amount for cancelation, purchase, and default risk compared to the contract without any embedded options. This result suggests that ignoring embedded options in valuing a lease contract leads to significant pricing errors. The Double-Yield (D-Y) model is a widely used method for predicting the mechanical properties of caved rock. However, determining the numerical simulation parameters for this model typically requires extensive trial and error. In this paper, a new approach for parameter inversion of the D-Y model is proposed and applied to a real case study involving repeated mining in multiple coal seams. The proposed framework combines FLAC3D, a finite element numerical simulation software, with a new computational tool developed using MATLAB® App Designer. By applying this framework to the case study, the accuracy and efficiency of parameter determination in the mining area are improved. In addition, a 3D finite element model of multiple coal seams is generated based on the geological information of the case study, and the stress evolution is analyzed. The simulation results are then validated through field measurements, providing valuable reference information for safe and efficient production. Overall, this improved method for parameter inversion of the D-Y model, along with the combined numerical simulation and field measurement approach, enhances the understanding of stress evolution in multiple coal seams and contributes to safer and more efficient mining operations.
