Indian science academia has a dearth of women researchers at all levels. Not only are they under-represented, but they are also under-highlighted, under-mentored and overlooked for awards, grants and other career-advancing steps. To effectively address this problem and devise a solution for the inequity, we need data on the proportion of women faculty across multiple STEM institutions. Such a database, currently, does not exist. To fill this gap, we formed BiasWatchIndia to (1) document the inequities, and (2) provide real-time actionable data as a basis for future remedial steps. Along with collecting data on women representation at the faculty level in Indian STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) academia, BiasWatchIndia also helps highlight the lack of women representation and gender imbalance in Indian STEM talks, conferences, workshops and panels. Based on our findings, we recommend several measures that need to be implemented by universities and institutes to challenge the status quo changes for women in Indian academia. Documentation of women's inclusion in Indian academia and conferences by BiasWatchIndia reveals the scale of underrepresentation of women across science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held the 3rd International Symposium on Trends in Radiopharmaceuticals, (ISTR-2023) at IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, during the week of 16–21 April 2023. This procedural paper summarizes highlights from symposium presentations, posters, panel discussions and satellite meetings, and provides additional resources that may be useful to researchers working with diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals in the academic, government and industry setting amongst IAEA Member States and beyond. More than 550 participants in person from 88 Member States attended the ISTR-2023. Over 360 abstracts were presented from all over the world by a diverse group of global scientists working with radiopharmaceuticals. Given this group of international radiochemists is unique to ISTR (IAEA funding enabled many to attend), there was an invaluable wealth of knowledge on the global state of the radiopharmaceutical sciences present at the meeting. The intent of this Proceedings paper is to share this snapshot from our international colleagues with the broader radiopharmaceutical sciences community by highlighting presentations from the conference on the following topics: Isotope Production and Radiochemistry, Industrial Insights, Regional Trends, Training and Education, Women in the Radiopharmaceutical Sciences, and Future Perspectives and New Initiatives. The authors of this paper are employees of IAEA, members of the ISTR-2023 Organizing Committee and/or members of the EJNMMI Radiopharmacy and Chemistry Editorial Board who attended ISTR-2023. Overall, ISTR-2023 fostered the successful exchange of scientific ideas around every aspect of the radiopharmaceutical sciences. It was well attended by a diverse mix of radiopharmaceutical scientists from all over the world, and the oral and poster presentations provided a valuable update on the current state-of-the-art of the field amongst IAEA Member States. Presentations as well as networking amongst the attendees resulted in extensive knowledge transfer amongst the various stakeholders representing 88 IAEA Member States. This was considered particularly valuable for attendees from Member States where nuclear medicine and the radiopharmaceutical sciences are still relatively new. EPA's DSSTox chemical structure database: a curated chemistry resource supporting computational toxicology research. As I shifted my focus to cleaning up datasets and chemical structure-identifier associations, I became alarmed at the scope of the problem across public datasets, undermining toxicity modeling efforts. Or consider a chemical-activity HTS result where the chemical was originally misidentified by a major supplier (yes, this happens) or, unbeknownst to the experimenter, the chemical reacted, volatilized, or degraded under the testing conditions. My hope for the near future is that public data resources supporting chemical-toxicity evaluation and regulation not only continue to expand, but that quality chemical curation becomes the norm and is demanded and expected by the scientific and regulatory communities. Phyo Phyo Kyaw Zin, Ph.D (Chemistry), is a Cheminformatics Scientist at Terray Therapeutics, where she develops in-silico techniques to advance drug discovery. My current work at Terray Therapeutics helps with overcoming the data scarcity challenge in the field because we are generating extremely large, precise chemical datasets for biological targets of interest at an unparalleled scale using microarray technology. It is more of a vision because it will require advanced cheminformatics techniques, medicinal chemistry, and biology expertise, as well as substantial amounts of genetic, biological, and chemical data. I also develop rapid, reaction-based enumeration methods for enumerating virtual libraries, analyze large chemical data, and extract SAR (structure-activity relationships) and chemical insights for interactive drug design and optimization. The relationships between gender-based earnings disparity and gendered dimensions of human capital gains and labor market changes are quite complex. Some scholars have argued that gender bias improves the over economy of a country/society. Others, however, have argued otherwise, adding to the narrative that despite an overall positive role of educational/human capital gains by women, the benefits reaped by them is non-linear, often with declining premiums for educational progress. This research investigates gendered earnings disadvantage and (dis)parity across US counties by employing GIS-based maps, descriptive statistics, correlations and regression analyses wherein female earnings and female-versus-male earnings ratios are regressed against select explanatory variables representing educational attainments, gender-based work-status, and their occupational over/under-representation in the labor market. Five-years estimates data (2015–2019) from the NHGIS are used for computing location quotients for major occupation-types by gender and additional statistical analyses. Females with professional, Master's and doctoral degrees have improved earnings, even though gender parity is better for both genders among the less educated. Sadly, gender disparity in earnings is higher when male-versus-female ratio increases for those majoring in science/engineering, science and engineering-related and business degrees. Greater gender parity, however, is noted when more men major in Education—a sub-field largely deemed as feminine. This research calls for focused policy interventions toward encouraging more women in STEM and science/engineering disciplines, along with strategic programs to help attract more women into working full-time—one of the several ways toward bridging the earnings gap. Diversity is a creative force that broadens views and enhances ideas; it increases productivity as well as the impact of our science, making our respective organisations more agile and timely. Equality of opportunity is a key to success for any research organisation. Here we argue that every research organisation, whether in academia or in industry, needs to have better inclusion policies to harness the benefits of diversity in research. Drawing from our personal experiences and perspectives as women in science, we share our suggestions on how to promote inclusion in academia and create a better research culture for all. Our shared experiences highlight the many hurdles women in science face on a daily basis. We stress that rules and regulations, as well as education for awareness, will play critical role in this much needed shift from a male-dominated scientific culture that dates from Victorian times to a modern focus on gender equality in science. Organizations have been founded to build communities by bringing together scientists from diverse backgrounds but with one shared identity and the common goal of strengthening their roles, increasing their visibility, and promoting their representation. We study mentorship in scientific collaborations, where a junior scientist is supported by potentially multiple senior collaborators, without them necessarily having formal supervisory roles. We identify 3 million mentor–protégé pairs and survey a random sample, verifying that their relationship involved some form of mentorship. We find that mentorship quality predicts the scientific impact of the papers written by protégés post mentorship without their mentors. We also find that increasing the proportion of female mentors is associated not only with a reduction in post-mentorship impact of female protégés, but also a reduction in the gain of female mentors. While current diversity policies encourage same-gender mentorships to retain women in academia, our findings raise the possibility that opposite-gender mentorship may actually increase the impact of women who pursue a scientific career. These findings add a new perspective to the policy debate on how to best elevate the status of women in science. Here, the authors study mentorship in scientific collaborations, and find that mentorship quality predicts the scientific impact of protégés post mentorship. October 12th is Ada Lovelace Day. Every year on this day we celebrate the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Although we have made progress in terms of gender equality in STEM, hurdles are still faced and changes are still needed. Background: In response to the landmark report "Beyond Bias and Barriers: Fulfilling the Potential of Women in Academic Science and Engineering," the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health issued a request for applications that funded 14 R01 grants to investigate causal factors to career success for women in STEM. Following completion of the 4-year grants, the grant PIs formed a grassroots collaborative, the Research Partnership on Women in Science Careers.Objective: To summarize the work of the Research Partnership, which resulted in over 100 publications.Methods: We developed six themes to organize the publications, with a "Best Practices" for each theme at the end of each section: Barriers to Career Advancement; Mentoring, Coaching, and Sponsorship; Career Flexibility and Work-Life Balance; Pathways to Leadership; Compensation Equity; and Advocating for Change and Stakeholder Engagement.Results: Women still contend with sexual harassment, stereotype threat, a disproportionate burden of family responsibilities, a lack of parity in compensation and resource allocation, and implicit bias. Strategies to address these barriers using the Bronfenbrenner ecological model at the individual, interpersonal, institutional, academic community, and policy levels include effective mentoring and coaching, having a strong publication record, addressing prescriptive gender norms, positive counter-stereotype imaging, career development training, networking, and external career programs such as the AAMC Early and Mid-Career Programs and Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM).Conclusions: Cultural transformation is needed to address the barriers to career advancement for women. The maligning of science, exacerbated by ignoring evidence-based expert advice during the pandemic, is not conducive to the personal growth of undergraduates and may affect commitment to STEM careers. Kamala Sohonie battled gender-based prejudice to gain entry into India's premier research institution. Born 369 years ago, Maria Sibylla Merian was an exceptional woman for her times. A naturalist and artist par excellence, she studied the relatively ignored area of insect metamorphosis, drawing intensely detailed and accurate portraits of insects feeding on host plants at different stages of their life cycle. In 1699, she travelled fromHolland to Surinam, spending two years there, and returned with material for a large volume on tropical insects and plants. This article focuses upon programs for undergraduate women in science and engineering, which are a strategic research site in the study of gender, science, and higher education. The design involves both quantitative and qualitative approaches, linking theory, method, questions, and analyses in ways not undertaken previously. Using a comprehensive, quantitative, cross-institutional, and longitudinal method, two extreme groups of programs are distinguished: those associated with the “most successful” and “least successful” outcomes in undergraduate degrees awarded to women in science and engineering. Qualitative analyses of interview data with key players in the programs in these two groups point to ways in which definitions of issues, problems, and solutions diverge (as well as converge), and thus to conceptual underpinnings that have important real-life consequences in these organizational settings of higher education. The programs that regard issues, problems, and solutions of women in science and engineering as rooted in “institutional/structural-centered,” as opposed to “individual/student-centered,” perspectives are associated with the most positive outcomes in undergraduate degrees awarded to women in science and engineering. The paper brings to focus people’s perception about female involvement in science, mathematics and technology (SMT). Data for the study were obtained from a survey conducted in March, 2005 in two Local Government Areas of Osun state, Southwest Nigeria. The paper reveals that: (i) about 57% of household heads, 45.6% of mothers and 57.6% of the children are of the opinion that both boys and girls are given equal right to SMT education (ii) social forces play an important role in determining people’s attitude to SMT (iii) though, parents and stakeholders perceptions about girls’ participation in some professions is changing, however, socio-cultural and economic factors still determine which sex to encourage to read SMT. The article focuses on the organizational arrangements fashioned by geneticist William Bateson and his colleagues to carry out their study on Mendelian inheritance. Often the term “women” is assumed to include women of color in the same way as the terms “African American” and “Hispanic” are assumed to include both women and men. Although women of color and non-Hispanic white women are under represented in the science labor force, the rates of and factors contributing to this under representation differ by race and ethnicity. Consequently, disaggregating data on women in science by race and ethnicity is crucial to capture these differences. This paper presents three indicators of vertical and horizontal occupational segregation to describe trends in women’s participation in eight disciplines and five academic levels in 1973, 1987, and 2001. The most common index, the index of occupational dissimilarity ( D), the new Charles and Grusky [1995, American Journal of Sociology 100, 931–971] Index of Association ( A), and the representation ratio are computed and compared. Although there are limits associated with D, the sparseness of women’s participation in academic science and engineering in 1973 posed computational problems with A. Key findings are: (1) levels of vertical segregation were higher than horizontal segregation and (2) levels of segregation (horizontal and vertical) have not declined substantially over the past 28 years. The same procedures are applied to data available for six of the nine “first round” ADVANCE institutions in an exploratory analysis for data from 2001 to 2003/04. This article considers the situation of women in science in Germany. We argue that scientific organizations play a crucial role in shaping science careers, often with different consequences for men and women. To sustain the argument, we offer a study of the careers of male and female scientists in the Max Planck Society. Women make up about ten per cent of the scientists and engineers in Japan. The aim of this essay is to make clear why, even in the year 2001, there are so few women in these disciplines. I will suggest that the socio-economic structure and gender ideology of Japan since the Second World War is responsible for this shortage which is often erroneously attributed to the cultural traditions of feudal Japan. Science is an intensely social activity. Professional relationships are essential for scientific success and mentors are indispensable for professional growth. Despite the scientific ethos of universalism and inclusion, American women scientists frequently experience isolation and exclusion at some time during their academic career. By contrast, male scientists enjoy informal but crucial social networks. Female scientists develop necessary strategies and defences, but many leave or achieve less success in science when deprived of necessary interpersonal connections. Science and engineering remain male-dominated professions in Canada and elsewhere. This is a disheartening fact for a society dedicated to providing equality of education and opportunity, and protection of the right to physical and psychological security of the person to all its citizens. Canadian women comprise 51% of the populations yet still hold down, on average, less than 10% of all jobs in the basic and applied sciences. Few women are found in the upper strata of the science hierarchy, whether judged by income, by rank within the relevant professions, or by inclusion in the structures of government, industry, education or professional institutions which formulate science policy. Strikingly few Nobel laureates within medicine, natural and social sciences are women. It is obvious that there are fewer women researchers within these fields, but does this still fully account for the low number of female Nobel laureates? We examine whether women are awarded the Nobel Prizes less often than the gender ratio suggests. Based on historical data across four scientific fields and a Bayesian hierarchical model, we quantify any possible bias. The model reveals, with exceedingly large confidence, that indeed women are strongly under-represented among Nobel laureates across all disciplines examined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the role of Massachusetts-based nonprofit advocacy organization the National Association for Women in Science (AWIS) regarding offering opportunity for women in professional development in scientific and technical careers in Massachusetts. The article discusses an April 13, 2015 study which found that faculty members prefer female candidates for tenure-track jobs in science and engineering. Topics discussed include previous findings that a relatively low percentage of female doctorates in the social and biological sciences secure academic positions, signs that science is inching towards gender equality and the chances of women advancing at other points in their scientific career.

The article presents the author's views on gender bias against women in the field of science. She says that she herself is a woman scientist, mentor and advocate for women in science. However, she says that her performance on the Implicit Association Test revealed that unconscious, she associates men with science and career. She says that such tests show that most people are biased against women's abilities. She says that now its time to understand these prejudices and try to overcome them.

The article provides information on the mentoring program offered by the Massachusetts chapter of the Association for Women in Science (MASS-AWIS) in March 2011. It says that MASS-AWIS offers various programs reflecting the increased awareness among women in medical, technical and scientific careers of the need for promotion of equal opportunity in the industrial and academic sectors. This article studies reasons as to why women drop out of research works due to family affairs, monetary problems and responsibilities. The article gives information about the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), which supports scientists who take time to rear family. The EMBO restart grants are just one of a handful of fellowships in Europe and the U.S. intended to kick-start a scientific career after a break. Others include the UK's Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowships, the Swiss National Science Foundation's Marie Heim-Vogtlin grants, and ADVANCE fellowships from the U.S. National Science Foundation. The fellowships aim to patch what was been called the "leaky pipeline" for women in science.
